Women sue for right to combat jobs
Two Army reservists launched a lawsuit against the Defense Department for excluding women from combat roles. They say the combat ban can hurt a woman's career in the military, CNN's Chris Lawrence reports.

Should these women win their lawsuit then all females should be required to register for the selective service when they turn 18. In the past we have been told that the only reason men have to is because they are combat eligible. This would then make women combat eligible therefore selective service eligible.
If women can meet the standards in place, then let them in, but to lower the requirements to let women in would be a mistake

As a female in the military, I agree if we want to be part of the BIG BOYS world then we should be at there level. Not the current level being dropped to fit us in. As someone that has been to combat and completed the same amount of training and work-ups as the men, I can say when it came down to it, I was there for my boys. Yes I was the only female in my plt. For a female officer of your rank, it seems that it has not hindered you. And suing the government is not the way to get your point across, you are not out to help anyone else or give a crap about other females in the military that have showed themselves worthy.

There are two sides to every coin... on the one hand you want to make sure you're not excluding women from having the opportunities men have in the military, and on the other hand, the undeniable proof is there are VERY few women that can perform physically on par with men. I was in the Army and i know this to be true. Women just aren't built like we are, Are there some women that can keep up with some men, sure, but i'm being honest when i say... that percentage is very small.... We're not built the same... we're just not... Most women couldn't keep up with the men in my unit when i was in... That was just the truth... and it wouldn't be fair to put women along side men in a combat situation where those men rely heavily on that woman to be as equally capable as they are... so i guess what i'm saying is... if you ARE going to allow women into combat roles... you better damn well not pull any punches... it better be a REQUIREMENT that they are as physically fit as the men... don't bend ANY physical requirements for fitness to allow them to join. They MUST be the equal of their male counterparts on the battlefield. Otherwise you're only endangering more soldiers.
@Clinton, at the micro level, you're right. This is radical egalitarianism run amok, where we pretend everyone is equal despite glaring evidence to the contrary. I weigh 200 pounds without equipment. When I'm nonambulatory wounded, who is carrying me to the pickup zone for extraction? To pretend women are capable is silly.
Then I disagree that even if a woman is personally physically capable of meeting a standard that automatically warrants admission. At the macro level, you're destroying group dynamics. A Ranger rifle squad or SF A Team is so effective because it has a synergism in esprit de corps or morale partly borne of whatever you want to call it – machismo, testosterone, type A. Introducing females destroys that.
The armed forces fight and win our nation's wars. Anything that detrats from that should be avoided. It isn't a job opportunity for females. I'll never be a hooters waitress or Miss Virginia and I'm not suing. National defense is too important to be trifled with social experimentation.

Agreed! When I was a lowly Private first class in 1979 I went to Air Assault School at Ft Campbell Ky. There was a girl that went through with our class. It was a 15 day course in mental and psysical toughness. There were no special restrictions put on this girl. She toughed it out with all of us, Most of us were Infantry Soldiers with the 101st Airborne division. Heart breakers and life takers This Gal made it through everthing we did and the last day of the 15 day course there was a 15 mile force march fully combat loaded if you didn't make it in the allotted time you had to start over from day one. They now have cut the course down to 10 days and a ten mile march. (Pansies). This gal barely made it and we all cheered her on and made sure she made it. I am proud to say that this gal was the very first Air Assault qualified woman ever. after the force march once on air assault grounds you had to do an allotted amount of pullups and situps then go back to your barracks put on your dress uniform and graduate on the same day. Tough lil gal she was and proud of her we were. Now after 31 plus years Green Beret Operations Master Sergeant I know that most women couldnt make it through what we go through but I remember to this day like it was yesterday that this tough lil gal that worked her ass off and forged the way for more women to go thru this course. Damn straight if they can do the job and be held to the same tough standards as men are that they should be allowed to do whatever job they want to do. And just thinking about this gal, I would be proud to fight alongside her.
