U.S., Pakistan fail to reach deal on supply routes ahead of NATO summit

By Mike Mount and Elise Labott reporting from Chicago

The United States and Pakistan will not reach a deal on opening NATO supply routes before coalition leaders meet on Sunday, two senior U.S. officials told CNN.

"There is no deal, and there won't be one until President (Asif Ali) Zardari returns" to Pakistan, one senior official said, "and even that is not assured."

The two sides had hoped to have a deal before Zardari arrived in Chicago this weekend to join NATO allies and other coalition partners for a meeting on Afghanistan.

"The main thing is to get a deal," one senior official said. "It's less important as to when."

A successful woman with so many achievements would always be considered a threat by Islamists like yourself. Are you thinking of throwing acid in her face or cutting off her nose like the Time magazine cover?

      • Pakistani-Canadians: Falling below the poverty line

        Dawn article by Murtaza haider
        16 may 2012

Despite the opportunities (and constraints), Pakistani-Canadians have not prospered as much as immigrants from other countries have. In 2005, wages earned by Pakistan-born immigrants were on average 70 per cent of the wages earned by those born in Canada. In comparison, wages earned by the India-born immigrants were 86 per cent of the wages earned by Canadians. At the same time, immigrants born in America earned 20 per cent more in wages than those born in Canada. Similarly, UK-born immigrants also reported on average higher wages than that of Canadian-born.

The difference in wages, home-ownership rates, and employment rates between immigrants from India and Pakistan extend beyond the economic spheres. For instance, Pakistani-born immigrants live in large-sized families. Whereas only 13 per cent of India-born immigrants live in households of five persons or more, 44 per cent of the Pakistan-born immigrants live in households with five or more people. Given the lower wages, high unemployment rates and rental units, Pakistan-born immigrants experience severe crowding at homes where the number of residents per room is perhaps the highest owing to the large family sizes

The Multidimensional Poverty Index developed by Oxford University shows that India is far poorer than Africa not just in number but also in intensity.
The new poverty measure shows that 8 states out of the 29 states in India have more poor people than 26 poorest African countries combined. The Multidimensional poverty index views poverty from several different angles instead of just GDP figures. India is crippled by so many problems. For example, India's population growth rate is increasing by the day putting pressure on the limited resources and leaving many Indians in absolute poverty. India is very poor in terms of education, in terms of economic improvement, infrastructure, heath care, etc.

    • Pakistani-Canadians: Falling below the poverty line

      Dawn article by Murtaza haider
      16 may 2012

Pakistan-born immigrants are the new face of poverty in urban Canada. The Canadian census revealed that 44 per cent of Pakistan-born immigrants fell below the poverty line making them the second most poverty prone group of immigrants in Canada.

While they may project an aura of opulence during their visits back home, their life in Canada, however, is often full of struggle and frustration. Thousands of Pakistani trained engineers, doctors, and PhDs are driving taxis or are working as security guards in large cities

The latest Census data for income for 2005 revealed that Pakistan-born immigrants reported the second highest incidence for the low-income cut-off, a proxy for poverty line in Canada. In comparison, only 18 per cent of India-born immigrants in Canada reported being a low-income person or belonging to a low-income economic family. Immigrants born in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy and Germany reported the lowest incidence of poverty in Canada

What are we quibbling about? Pay up or don't use the facilities. That is the American way. We are used to paying $5,000 for a toilet bowl, $100 million for researching how many eggs chickens lay in some senator's state; earmarks galore etc. What Pakistan is asking is pittance. It is my tax money to begin with and I have no problem paying Pakistan for what they are asking. It is a great deal for americnas I believe.

Nah. Can't flush $5000 down in that toilet bowl of an Islamist country for every single truck everyday. This welfare needs to end now. Tax payers need to see some results from these ingrate Islamists living off the dole.

Then again we are so scared of fighting the talibans we have no choice but to depend on others. Since we can't afford to pay as we are broke, perhaps Pakistan can extend credit to us. Unfortunately, we don't have AAA rating anymore so we will have to pay more on interest. Goes to say that even American rating agencies don't think we are credit worthy and everything costs us more.....Quoth the Raven....Nevermore.....'tis the American way....Quoth the Raven....Evermore.

I gotta say the Chicago Summit belongs to our dear friends Pakistan to whom we are eternally gratefully for sacrificing so much for us for so little in return. The free meal ticket has gotta end now and we Americans need to live up to our end of the deal and compensate our friends and dear allies for using their transportation network especially when all they are asking is cost breakeven reimbursement. Now just think of the 200,000 lives they have sacrificed...how do you even compensate for that ? You can't . the least you can do is pay for the use of their transportation network and for wear and tear. Now look at the other side. Our newly found firends India has raped us for doing our clean up work in Afghanistan and for ratting to us about Pakistan. They have an army of 1.5 million; what have they done for us? They are hiding in trenches scared of talibans. Do we reallly need friends like indians. The answer is absolutely NO.

Earlier the Pakistanis were getting $250 for every truck that crossed over into Afghanistan from Pak. That also accounted for the 100's of trucks burnt along with the supplies!

Now they want $5,000 per truck and no guarantees that the trucks are not burnt.

THIS IS NOTHING BUT A BLACKMAIL BY THE PAKISTANIS!

$250 was subsidized cost; $ 5,000 is breakeven cost; $10,000 should have been the actual cost that Americans should have been asked to pay. Free lunch is over. Pay up or scoot. This is just break even cost. No tickee no washee. Kapiche?

The recent news about the imminent danger due to floods to the nuclear plant in Nebraska is eye opening. First Japan and now this. If technologically advanced countries cannot handle this surely third world countries would also struggle. Quid pro quo transfer of nuclear technology by USA to third world countries such as India needs to be opposed on moral grounds. Billions of people live in that neighborhood and would be at risk from such catastrophes which I am sure the American people would not like to be a party to. We are all well aware that that region is prone to floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and of course terrorism placing such nuclear installations at tremendous risks. US Congress is urged to reconsider and cancel all the agreements for the transfer of such technologies due “Force Majeure

A few hours ago Pakistan set the agenda for the Chicago Summit and laid down the conditions for resumption of ties with USA. There are five conditions which are very short and simple. They have done so on american soil. They said take it or leave it. Next move is USA and Nato's. Let the summit begin.

Pardon the pun, at this point it appears per CNN, that USA cannot afford to pay transit fees. Apparently, Pakistan has offered credit. Moreover, as someone has rightly pontificated.....

PAKISTAN.....The New Gateway to Central Asia and Europe.
With a population of over 180 million most of whom are well educated, English speaking, entrepreneurial and a cultural and social fit with Central Asians...Pakistan will now become the new face and gateway to Central Asia and Europe. Pakistan will thus span this region and provide the impetus for growth, prosperity and unity among these countries. These are new and exciting times for Pakistanis who should now look forward to their new leadership role aligned with Central Asia and Europe rather than the Subcontinent. We wish them much success as they have sacrificed the most during the past 30 + years creating a new world order.

      • Timmy Tenderloin

Zardari came to the summit to tell the US and Nato to their faces that Pakistan is the new regional power. That they need to fight their own wars. That they need to pay for their wars. That they need to take the blame for the failures in the 10 year long war fighting a ragtag army of talibans who just have AK47s and that too 20 years old. That the days of muscling Pakistan are over. That the result of the next US Presidential elections depend on Pakistan.

I agree with @krm1007 analysis that I read a few days ago (reprinted below) and am also of the mindset that the Afganistan solution without Pakistan is impossible. This is now all about negotiations and Pakistan needs to hold steadfast to its position as it was short changed in the past by americans and western allies. It is pay back time for them now and should be in "TRILLIONS" not "Billons" !

"PAKISTAN.....The New Gateway to Central Asia and Europe.
With a population of over 180 million most of whom are well educated, English speaking, entrepreneurial and a cultural and social fit with Central Asians...Pakistan will now become the new face and gateway to Central Asia and Europe. Certainly, you make a good point Jerry. I am hearing that Pakistan is determined not to be muscled anymore. they decided to appear in Chicago Summit to articulate their vision for the new world order in that region, their role and how they will implement their power platform. The message being that Pakistan has suffered the most in every respect and will contribute fully going forward. However, there will ne no more free lunches for USA, NATO or for the neighbors (India, China, Iran etc). The message will clearly be that Pakistan will not foot the bill for this war anymore. Plus Pakistan, as you exactly state in your proposition above, is now the regional power in that region now for which it is attending the Chicago Summit to be acknowledged and coronated. This message has already been conveyed by Hillary Clinton to India and Bangladesh et al when she visited there a few days ago.

Jerry, I am gad you put it all on the table the way you see it. I could not agree with you more. Pakistan is a very progressive nation which is being deliberately kept back by its incompetent leaders, Indian meddling and American and European foreign policy. In the past, Pakistan and Israel have had some very good discussions on how to move forward on addressing the global issues that have been lingering out there including Palestine and Kashmir. there is a meeting of the minds and in very forseeable future you will see a nexus emerge that will shock the current status quo in this world. Now is the time to adjust to the equation that is emerging in the world of which Chicago Summit is but one part. Pakistan will be taking a prominent role in regional affairs not because of USA but because the world is aligned in giving Pakistan a larger role. They have tried India and was a waste of time for over 20 years as it is more of an elephant than a tiger. Pakistan is the tiger we are looking for and it is ready to pounce. The rest of the countries can follow. Please note the recent moves Pakistan has been making. These are well orchestrated and advised by PR consultants and governments who consider Pakistan as the new emerging star. Don't forget South Korea is based on the industrila model of Pakistan of the 1960s. That says it all. We in Israel look forward to the new paradigm. It bodes well for the Jews.

I guess when the economy actually starts to come out of the 2009 hole by any meaningful metrics then you'll actually let this administration take responsibility? Pakistan is paying price for 65 years long friendship with the USA. In this friendship USA made a secret airport at Badabher near Peshawar and used it in U2 mission, making Pakistan a target for USSR in 60s, then in 70s used Pakistan against USSR, destroying Afghanistan and disintegrated USSR and now in war on terror has put Pakistan in line of fire. Pakistan will continue march to complete annihilation if this friendship continued further. Pakistan is still a sincere friend and has comparatively more contribution then any one in the alliance against terrorism but despite this USA and their puppets blame Pakistan for US failure in Afghanistan without looking into their own blunders, miss judgement, and miss management. Pakistan has to think over this 65 years long friendship with the USA if wish to survive as a nation or a state in this world.

Since the birth of your nation you have been sucking at the teats of the United States for your survival. Everything you have listed above you did not because of any "friendship" but because you wanted to be PAID for it in dollars to buy military equipment. You guys will sell yourself to anyone for money like you are doing to China right now. You are nobody's friend.

Bullshit! America is and has been putting pressure even on its allies to upgrade defence munitions and systems. reason: they will purchase american arms. If I ask you to guard my interest, would it not be fair for you to pay for the security expenses. This was paid to pakistan and many other countries, these are not handouts as you may think. The handout had been coming from other countries for many decades to america in the form of goodwill. Now that goodwill is fading and the leaders of countries are now working towards a better world without american influence. Now that Putin is in power, the world will see a change in attitude towards this american "handshake and screw" attitude that has been going on for decades.

News flash, the kyber pass for as long as anyone can remember was called the lawless zone, with drugs and guns sold on the street. Saying the US is responsible for tribal acts and decisions, is more than a bit off. Its a little unfair to say we Americans confuse Pakistanis with Indians. Especially considering the rocky relationship between the two of you. I am not offended by what you said but I know the Pakistani government has a hard time with the extremist Taliban terrorizing Pakistan from the north. It was very likely the Taliban that killed Zardaris' wife. Osama Bin Laden was thought by American "intelligence" agencies to be in northern Pakistan and we end up finding him near Abottabad less than 15 miles from a military base. You have problems with liberal elected politicians being murdered by their own security agents. I'm very glad your government sees nuclear war as a last resort. We need to help you get rid of the terrorists in your country and we are willing to do that since we share the same enemy. Peace bro. With a little war can come a lot of freedom.

@Khan : Few points that will serve as food for thought for people like you
-> Most of the Pakistanis in US pose themselves as Indians and confuse US people. I have found this phenomenon even with the people who are sitting at good job positions. So, its not US people who get confused but it is the lie's that Pakistani people have to play because of obvious reasons.
-> You talked about slavish mentality from Indian..Somehow Pakistani people are used to of spitting in the pot where they drink their water from, it not new but have been same since like ages so I won't blame you. Indians stay faithful and respect the country where they are or eat their food from. Not like Pakistani's who stay in the US but curse America for each and everything while happily living there and exhausting countries resources. This is called as betrayal...nothing else..
-> Pakistan doesn't have guts to continue closing the NATO routes, that is just a drama being played by Pakistani army to put dust into its country people that yes they do have some spine to challenge and tackle US. Truth is they have to yield sooner or later and YES they did it, 3 trucks have already reached Afghanistan via the same route and rest will soon.....so CHEERS.
      Best of luck .....

United States can not be a friend of any country. US only wants to safe guard its own benefits. As I'm Canadian, I've only fear of US who can destroy a peace loving country. America is sending illegal guns, drugs etc into Canada. Although people in both of US & Canada share the same values but the monsters in the white house & pantagon are the followers of Hitler thats why they want to kill everybody.

Now come to Pakistan, US & Pakistan cant be friends because 99.99% of Pakistanis believe that US is their enemy. US is not giving aid to help Pakistan, its in the favour of US to give aid for their own vicious interests otherwise americans even damn care of their mothers, they dont even give them a piece of shit. US has lost the Afghan war, they are begging Taliban & Pakistan to give them safe passage. US is a super power, so it must behave with dignity but these days US believes in might is right. This approach will ruin US one day just like former Soviat Union.

This is their business and way of earning livelihood. Killing poor, weak nations in Asia, Africa, Middle East and even in American continent, like a big fish survive on eating the small one. You are very much right in saying about US fall in the trap which has already decided the fate of ex USSR, just a decade back. No doubt very few in USA like to live like Dracula/ vampire as today 70 % Americans are against this death merchandise in world politics and have urged Govt to end wars but again Paneta CIA chief has termed this public opinion poll useless and has vowed to continue killing like Hitlor Nazi. I think everyone agrees that Pakistan is certainly no friend to the US. They are double dealing everyone they can. I suspect as quick as the US wraps up in Afghanistan, they will cut ties with the Pakis in every way but by name. It won't be a formal cut, just a deep freeze. But at some point, they will have to be dealt with simply because of their nuclear capabilities and their low morals which allows them to sell it to the highest bidder. They have already proven themselves to be untrustworthy. Perhaps India will get fed up with them and destroy them? They have been having to deal with their double dealing, lying and cheating from the beginning of their cesspool of a country. And being next door and on the receiving end of of so much of their evilness, I would think it wouldn't take much to set them off.

INDIA: On a Goat and a Stick:

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. You can only take it so far based on symbolisms of a goat and a stick with a skinny little man aka gandhi banging boys at night and spinning wheels during daytime.

Pakistan and US can never be friends. Their interests are different and the way they think is different. People here that are saying bomb Pakistan or Pakistan is US enemy and all that are wrong. Pakistan has sacrificed more than any Western country. And why Pakistan has to suffer? because US supported and funded these terrorists to fight soviet union. You made these terrorists into heroes of 1980s. So technically everyone should be calling America a terrorist country because they supported these terrorist. the event of 9/11 should also be blamed on US because they gave terrorists the power and training to carry out such attacks. Now lets talk about the US Aid to Pakistan. Pakistan have received about $24 billion from the US to support their cause in Afghanistan but this war that America started has cost Pakistan $60 billion. This $24 billion that US gives to Pakistan is not to the people of Pakistan, it is the cost of hiring puppets to run a fake government to do America's dirty work in the country, so all the blame goes to the puppets but not America. Now people argue that people of Pakistan voted for this government. This is absolutely rubbish. 40% of the votes were fake. Everyone in Pakistan knows it but people in western countries does not want to hear the truth. Please don't give aid to Pakistan, it will benefit the country. NATO should also leave Afghanistan. Live and let other live in peace.

Everytime emotions are stirred when people of the poor country see the change from the dictator to the corrupt rulers brokered by Condeleza Rice and the govt...Like all of us, people in Pakistan want peace and prosperity and it seems like the our govt in US is giving more aid to make the corrupt rulers richer with their swiss account and money being looted..

Pakistanis have been working against the US by hiding and nurturing the worst terrorists inside Pakistan. Now, they want to make it difficult for the US to fight terrorism by demanding 30 times more transit fee for NATO supply routes. This is in addition to the billions given to them as US aid. Pakistanis have always been working against the US and fighting on the side of the terrorists rather than the US.

They are working against us because they don't reinvent their entire security structure to 100% surveillance over their citizens in even their most remote outreaches specifically so that interests of the United States are safe? Maybe you should consider if the roles were reversed, and the US government yielded to Pakistan on American soil, jeopardizing the wellbeing of American citizens.

Pakistan will thus span this region and provide the impetus for growth, prosperity and unity among these countries. These are new and exciting times for Pakistanis who should now look forward to their new leadership role aligned with Central Asia and Europe rather than the Subcontinent. We wish them much success as they have sacrificed the most during the past 30 + years creating a new world order."

The fact that Pakistan will not help the USA defeat terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan tells us that they should be isolated and all aid to both discontinued. Get out of Dodge and let them kill each other. They should not be getting our tax dollars.

We should start a war with Pakistan and carve out a little strip of land along the Iranian boarder for Afghanistan..a strip 5 or 10 miles wide to the ocean....

They are double agents anyway: receiving US aids and helping Al Queda/Taliban for drug trafficking out of Afghanistan.

Get hell out of there and we save trillion a year. Yemen is the US interest to protect open sea...

We should go back to the various Empires of the last century, re-draw the maps, and get a do-over. Nearly every war torn country is the result of colonialism by the British, French, Spanish, and Dutch. Why does America have to clean up their messes, pay for it, and get the blame?

For Pete's sake cut the assistance money/aid off and keep it off. Pakistan is a terrorist nation and NOT an ally.

Can we please move on without each other? USA and Pakistan's paths are separate and different. Their goals are different. The twains shall never meet. What does it take for people to understand this? For over 60 years we have tried to be friends but we can't. Next......
