U.S., Pakistan fail to reach deal on supply routes ahead of NATO summit

The United States and Pakistan will not reach a deal on opening NATO supply routes before coalition leaders meet on Sunday, two senior U.S. officials told CNN.
"There is no deal, and there won't be one until President (Asif Ali) Zardari returns" to Pakistan, one senior official said, "and even that is not assured."
The two sides had hoped to have a deal before Zardari arrived in Chicago this weekend to join NATO allies and other coalition partners for a meeting on Afghanistan.
"The main thing is to get a deal," one senior official said. "It's less important as to when."

Despite the opportunities (and constraints), Pakistani-Canadians have not prospered as much as immigrants from other countries have. In 2005, wages earned by Pakistan-born immigrants were on average 70 per cent of the wages earned by those born in Canada. In comparison, wages earned by the India-born immigrants were 86 per cent of the wages earned by Canadians. At the same time, immigrants born in America earned 20 per cent more in wages than those born in Canada. Similarly, UK-born immigrants also reported on average higher wages than that of Canadian-born.
The difference in wages, home-ownership rates, and employment rates between immigrants from India and Pakistan extend beyond the economic spheres. For instance, Pakistani-born immigrants live in large-sized families. Whereas only 13 per cent of India-born immigrants live in households of five persons or more, 44 per cent of the Pakistan-born immigrants live in households with five or more people. Given the lower wages, high unemployment rates and rental units, Pakistan-born immigrants experience severe crowding at homes where the number of residents per room is perhaps the highest owing to the large family sizes

What are we quibbling about? Pay up or don't use the facilities. That is the American way. We are used to paying $5,000 for a toilet bowl, $100 million for researching how many eggs chickens lay in some senator's state; earmarks galore etc. What Pakistan is asking is pittance. It is my tax money to begin with and I have no problem paying Pakistan for what they are asking. It is a great deal for americnas I believe.

I gotta say the Chicago Summit belongs to our dear friends Pakistan to whom we are eternally gratefully for sacrificing so much for us for so little in return. The free meal ticket has gotta end now and we Americans need to live up to our end of the deal and compensate our friends and dear allies for using their transportation network especially when all they are asking is cost breakeven reimbursement. Now just think of the 200,000 lives they have sacrificed...how do you even compensate for that ? You can't . the least you can do is pay for the use of their transportation network and for wear and tear. Now look at the other side. The recent news about the imminent danger due to floods to the nuclear plant in Nebraska is eye opening. First Japan and now this. If technologically advanced countries cannot handle this surely third world countries would also struggle. Quid pro quo transfer of nuclear technology by USA to third world countries such as India needs to be opposed on moral grounds. Billions of people live in that neighborhood and would be at risk from such catastrophes which I am sure the American people would not like to be a party to. I am hearing that Pakistan is determined not to be muscled anymore. they decided to appear in Chicago Summit to articulate their vision for the new world order in that region, their role and how they will implement their power platform. The message being that Pakistan has suffered the most in every respect and will contribute fully going forward. However, there will ne no more free lunches for USA, NATO or for the neighbors (India, China, Iran etc). The message will clearly be that Pakistan will not foot the bill for this war anymore. Plus Pakistan, as you exactly state in your proposition above, is now the regional power in that region now for which it is attending the Chicago Summit to be acknowledged and coronated. This message has already been conveyed by Hillary Clinton to India and Bangladesh et al when she visited there a few days ago.

Jerry, I am gad you put it all on the table the way you see it. I could not agree with you more. Pakistan is a very progressive nation which is being deliberately kept back by its incompetent leaders, Indian meddling and American and European foreign policy. In the past, Pakistan and Israel have had some very good discussions on how to move forward on addressing the global issues that have been lingering out there including Palestine and Kashmir. there is a meeting of the minds and in very forseeable future you will see a nexus emerge that will shock the current status quo in this world. Now is the time to adjust to the equation that is emerging in the world of which Chicago Summit is but one part. Pakistan will be taking a prominent role in regional affairs not because of USA but because the world is aligned in giving Pakistan a larger role. They have tried India and was a waste of time for over 20 years as it is more of an elephant than a tiger. Pakistan is the tiger we are looking for and it is ready to pounce. The rest of the countries can follow. Please note the recent moves Pakistan has been making. These are well orchestrated and advised by PR consultants and governments who consider Pakistan as the new emerging star. Pakistan is paying price for 65 years long friendship with the USA. In this friendship USA made a secret airport at Badabher near Peshawar and used it in U2 mission, making Pakistan a target for USSR in 60s, then in 70s used Pakistan against USSR, destroying Afghanistan and disintegrated USSR and now in war on terror has put Pakistan in line of fire. Pakistan will continue march to complete annihilation if this friendship continued further. Pakistan is still a sincere friend and has comparatively more contribution then any one in the alliance against terrorism but despite this USA and their puppets blame Pakistan for US failure in Afghanistan without looking into their own blunders, miss judgement, and miss management. Osama Bin Laden was thought by American "intelligence" agencies to be in northern Pakistan and we end up finding him near Abottabad less than 15 miles from a military base. I think everyone agrees that Pakistan is certainly no friend to the US. They are double dealing everyone they can. I suspect as quick as the US wraps up in Afghanistan, they will cut ties with the Pakis in every way but by name. It won't be a formal cut, just a deep freeze. But at some point, they will have to be dealt with simply because of their nuclear capabilities and their low morals which allows them to sell it to the highest bidder. They have already proven themselves to be untrustworthy. Perhaps India will get fed up with them and destroy them? They have been having to deal with their double dealing, lying and cheating from the beginning of their cesspool of a country. And being next door and on the receiving end of of so much of their evilness, I would think it wouldn't take much to set them off.
