U.S. continues support for Israel's Iron Dome

By Jennifer Rizzo

The United States will provide an additional $70 million to support Israel's short-range missile defense system, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Thursday.

Panetta issued a statement saying he was directed by President Barack Obama to fill Israel's request for the cash needed to run the Iron Dome system.

The United States has already provided Israel with $205 million for the system, in addition to the roughly $3 billion given to Israel annually for security assistance. The Defense Department plans to request extra funding for Iron Dome over the next three years. An exact figure of additional assistance was not given.

Israel's Iron Dome is a portable anti-rocket system built to take down short-range missiles. First deployed in April 2011, the system targets incoming rockets it identifies as possible threats to city centers and fires an interceptor missile to destroy them in the air.

In March, Iron Dome was responsible for taking down 80% of the several hundred rockets directed toward Israel, Pentagon spokesman George Little said at a Thursday news conference.

"It's a proven system," Little said. "Missile defense is important to Israel and we're committed to supporting the Israelis."

The announcement came after a meeting at the Pentagon between Panetta and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Israelites, always outnumbered, always kicked bootie. Star of David on their flag, he was undefeated, slew the phillistine goliath. Samson ripped the egyptian gates off bar and all and carried them 20 or more miles away to the top of a mountain. God was with them. He will always be with Israel. They will never be utterly destroyed, impossible. Remember the plagues on egypt. LET MY PEOPLE GO, said Moses. The parting of the red sea, of course it happened. Wise up

      Speaking of "Samson" .

You do know that Israel has stated that they intend to become the ultimate suicide terrorist bomber and destroy the world with their nukes before Israel falls? No country will be immune from their attack including the USA. You need to read about the Samson Option. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson_Option

Why is Israel not facing massive worldwide sanctions and having their nuclear weapons confiscated for stating such a reckless anti-humanity policy? Secondly why is the USA supporting with money we don't have what Israel itself has stated could be the murderer of millions of Americans.

One can find incredibly bizarre stories on the Internet and other places... Some of them include the horrible
Zio nist of Khartoum" tale about an Israeli agent who was walking at the Khartoum market shaing hands with the merchants. The next day all those merchants lost their penises... Another story tells us about the murderous Israeli army girls showing their bodies to Palestinians and then pulling machine guns out of their mini bikinis and shooting those who came too close. Still another story tells us about Israelis who decided to sink an American ship USS Liberty in June, 1967 for no apparent reason and conspired with the President, the Secretary of Defense and the top US military brass to do it... One can find a lot on the Internet but not every story there is true.

US should use the much needed money at home rather than spending for Israel. Several states are facing 50 billion dollar budget short fall.

The US aid to the Arab countries is FIVE TIMES greater than the aid to Israel. Don't you have a problem with that? By the way, it seems that NOT supporting Israel may cost the US much more than supporting it and the leaders of the country realize it. Otherwise WHY would they support the Jewish State?

      • Thinker23

Cuz... The US BUYS OIL from the Arab states. Most Americans (and the rest of the world) pay FOUR TIMES MORE for the gas today than they've paid five years ago... and five years ago the Arab and Iranian producers of oil did not lose money either. Somehow I do not see Arab and Iranian oil as a "benefit" given to the West. It is rather a rip off.

Straping your kids with explosives to kill civilians is not a diplomatic solution. If you keep using the same formula for 64 years without result, you are your enemy, not the Jews! lol

BS Robert.....when your country is occupied by zio nist invaders who get blank checks from America to spend on weapons .... you do what ever you can to defend yourself. POOR ISRAEL!!!

ALWAYS kills 10x more innocent civilians, women and children....always....
      Your lies are transparent.

BuzzK... You, continue complaining about "your country occupied by zio nist invaders" but you're unable to NAME this non-existing "country" and you can not explain the reasons that "occupied" country is YOURS. Further, as long as the Palestinians are wiling the war to continue it will continue and more Palestinians will be killed. When the number of dead Palestinians will satisfy those still alive they will ask for peace.

You are an idiot. If people get killed by rockets, the Israelis may just erase the settlements and start world war three right over there. At least the jews actually share intelligence and technology as well as training with us, what about every Arab countyr that gets "aid" but only send out bombs in return. 3 billion a year is chump change to what the Arabs get

Asad... If the Palestinians did not like the current arrangement they would NEGOTIATE A BETTER DEAL long ago. As a result they would have peace, a sovereign state of their own and more aid than they could ever dream about. It's unfortunate that killing as many of those "damn jews" as possible is more important for them than having peace, a state and aid.

The Jews will defend themselves and their country even witohut US aid. Of course, if there was no US aid Israel would have to use less expensive and less precise but no less effective ways to fight their enemies. For example, instead of using attack helicopters and laser guided missiles to destroy the room where a group of terrorists is hiding they would use tanks and artillery to destroy the city block where that room is located. Are you sure tha THIS is what you want?

15 People in over 14 years have been killed in Israel to date from Palestinian rockets. Israel killed over 1500 people 800 civilians in 23 days in the last Gaza massacre in "response" to rocket attacks. Israel is hardly a victim here. Who is occupying who? Do the Palestinians not have a right to live in peace away from the illegal Israeli occupation?

      • Thinker23

Nambi... If the Palestinians wanted to live in peace they would do just that. It's unfortunate that they prefer a war instead... and as long as the Palestinians are willing the war to continue it will continue and more Palestinians will be killed. When the number of dead Palestinians will satisfy those still alive they will ask for peace. Then Israel and the Palestinians will NEGOTIATE a peace agreement, the war will end and with it will end the (PERFECTLY LEGAL during a war) the occupation.
