War supplies collecting dust near Pakistan border

CNN's Reza Sayah reports on U.S.-made NATO supplies bound for Afghanistan that are stuck and unused in Pakistan.

The transit points have been closed for nearly half a year as Pakistan and the U.S. negotiate how to resume relations after a series of incidents, including the secret raid by American forces to kill bin Laden and a border fight with NATO troops that left two dozen Pakistani soldiers killed.  It has been a costly problem for the U.S. and NATO which must use other, more circuitous routes to get supplies into the country.

Gen. John Allen, commander of US and NATO troops was in Rawalpindi this past weekend to hold discussions with the Pakistani military on a range of issues, including the border situation.  A statement released by the Pakistani government said the talks focused mostly on "Talks focused on operations in border areas and coordination mechanisms to avoid untoward incidents."

A U.S. negotiation team went to Pakistan in late April to start intensive talks about resolving the relationship-crippling issues.

It is classic guerrilla warfare, it is simple hit an run tactics they come over the border make contact, then break contract and decamp back into Pakistan, the ISAF pursue them into Pakistan they get close to Pakistan troops or some times they are Pakistan troops in militant clothing they hit by airstrike. Then Pakistan has a reason to close the supply lines. Back in 2010 when the lines were closed. The rule if the enemy does not to follow because are led into ambush. If 3 Australian soldiers make contact then break contact and decamp you never follow them because you are being led into an ambush.

This shows how little the reporter really knows about this subject. 1) HMMV's have not been used operationally for several years in Afghanistan as well as Iraq because of their inability to survive IED's. There is a reason why they are in the yard....they are either being shipped back home or diverted to the Pakistani's or someone else. It is forbidden for US personnel to be "outside the wire" in this type of vehicle. To point out a turret to be used as an offensive weapon's platform shows ignorance on the part of the reporter....we don't use these vehicles any longer because they are death traps to IEDs.... Be knowlegable before you look really stupid.

If it isn't one issue, then it's another, then it's another...get over it already. The U.S. should never have invaded there and it would be better off cutting it's losses and withdrawing before the econony totally tanks, fulfilling bin Laden's prediction that the war of terror would bankrupt the U.S. (it could already be too late). When it's time to pay the piper, who would prefer to see their money squadered in Afghanistan as compared to having it spent here?

The US is handling the situation very well. Pakistan wanted an unconditional apology from the US for euthanizing 24 Pakistani soldiers who fired on the US helicopters to protect Pakistani terrorists. Instead Pakistan will re-open the NATO supply lines unconditionally just to be included in the NATO conference on the May 20th.

Why does India need a 1 1/2 milion + army doing nothing except genocide in Kashmir? What role is it playing in world progress and making it safer? What contributions has it made in fighting this war on terror? India should stop piggybacking on Pakistan's efforts and sacrifices and step to the plate and carry its weight.

@Joe Kapadia – Those are 24 soldiers were trying to protect terrorists. If those 24 low-life soldiers were successful in saving terrorists, then those terrorists would gone on to kill innocent people. That is why not a single country in the world spoke against the loss of lives of those 24 terrorist supporters. It is the duty and responsibility of NATO and the US to get rid of terrorism and its all its supporters. That is why NATO and US stand on higher moral ground than Pakistan.

Pakistan will have no choice but to re-open the NATO supply lines before May 20th. None of their silly demands will be met. (1) Drone strikes will continue by the US, and (2) No apology will be given by the US to Pakistan for stamping out 24 pests in November last year. And their aid has been reduced. Pakistan has been told to stay away from NATO meeting on May 20th unless they re-open the NATO supply lines. Pakistanis have no choice - They have been told to simply suck it up, eat all their pride, and re-open the NATO supply lines before May 20th. Let's see what they do now.

Human lives are precious even if from third world countries. If Countries responsible for the slaughter of these soldiers don't want to apologize, it reflects on their culture and the value they place on human lives. It reflects on how degenerated these societies have become. It is not about apologies but about valuing human lives.

      May 14, 2012 at 3:47 pm | Reply
    • Reasonable1

Yes, it is all about valuing lives of innocent people. Pakistanis value lives of terrorists, not the lives of innocent people. If the Pakistani soldiers ever shoot at NATO again to give cover to Pakistani terrorists, they will get an appropriate and forceful response from NATO, not an apology. Hope Pakistani soldiers learnt their lesson. If so, further lessons can be avoided.

    Reimburse the losses from pakistan!!!

Pakistn has made choice that 'pakistan loves militancy/Taliban and not progressive world' (But Pakistn can't resist donations/aid from west!!!!)

Now Pakistan is finding excuses for opening NATO supply!!!! (There is no give and take !!! there is begging and give up!!!!)

Once they were shown there worth and congress made some bills to block their 'donations' ... they woke up.

But Pakistan has potential to harm usa in many ways and would ensure that they would do it more shreudly

Taliban has already acquired some area of Pakistan and they are content with it!!!

Let Afghanistan come up without any contribution by Pakistan!!!!

Pakistan may play a spoil sport but would fail.

Liberate Blochistan once for all. Once that is done there is permanent route to reach to Afghanistan via balochistan!!!!

You must be my fellow Indian making idiotic comments wreaking of hatred. We are well aware that there can be no solution to Afghanistan without the blessings and involvement of Pakistan. This is just face saving by Obama during election year. USA wants to emerge from Afghanistan looking like a winner when the world knows that they have fought the longest war in history with rag tag talibans and the end is nowhere in sight. What have we Indians contributed? Our armed forces are useless and could not even defend the country when a few teenage talibans dared us in Mumbai. In our own counrty!!
