Dead, captured and wanted

[Update Tuesday, June 5, 2012] Abu Yahya al-Libi, the No. 2 man in al Qaeda and a longtime public face of the terror network, has been killed by a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan, a U.S. official said Tuesday. He appeared in this list of Most Wanted terrorists earlier this year.

[Original post]As the one-year anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death approaches, CNN has updated this list, originally published in September 2011, taking a look at some of the dead, captured and the remaining most wanted terrorists from the last 10 years.

While progress has been made, there are still terrorists being sought by the U.S. government. CNN spoke with a number of intelligence agencies to come up with this list of "dirty dozens." Here are the 12 most significant terrorists who are now dead, have been captured and those who are still being hunted. The lists are obviously subjective–there are many more candidates–but these are some of the top combatants in the war on terror.

Drone strikes distroy and terrorize the terrorist without killing thousands of people. Seems like poetic justice to me.

not thousands, just 50 or 60 completely innocent villagers who just happen to be in the vicinity. I guess their lives don't matter to you huh? By the way, destroy is spelled with an e, maybe you should spend some of the time you spend reading CIA propaganda learning some grammar.

CNN should also list all the MILLIONS of people the muslims have killed since islamic fundamentalism started in the 1930s with the islamic murders of british and jews in Palestine Mandate. that way the world can REALLY see how many people have died at the hands of islam.

All these terrorist are either Islamic clerics or devout Muslims. The "good" Muslims are the "Non-Practicing" Muslims which are the great majority. As opposed to any other religion, the followers of the Prophet Mohammed's are the worst kind because they imitate Mohammed's extremely immoral conduct, merciless and cruel behavior and violent actions.

F*** off! What the hell do you know about Islam?? Islam is a religion of Peace, Mercy and Light and Guidance for all of Mankind. The "terrorists", while they're wrong, but they're confused. This is the result of the corruption that the dictators have created in the Muslim lands, and the conspiracies of the West. Right and Wrong, Good and Evil got mixed up in one bowl, and it became hard for some to sort out. Islam condemns terrorism, and Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and also the Glorious Quran COMMAND THE MUSLIMS TO NOT KILL A SINGLE INNOCENT SOUL!

If this is true, then what is going on with all the Muslims killing other Muslims? Tribal and sectarian (Shia/Sunni) violence kills thousands of Muslims on a regular basis. Free speech often ends in jail or death. Women are second class citizens. Why don't we see Muslims, en mass, protesting against what is happening to their "peaceful" religion? Could it be that they agree with all the strict tenants and that they believe that anything said or done against Islam or Muhammad should result in death. I just don't get how any Muslim can say it is a religion of peace.

      • Osama Abdallah

"is the word non-violence ever mentioned therein?"

Islam is all about non-violence! This is why Muslims are ordered to be kind and loving even to those THEY CAPTURE AT WAR AFTER FIGHT:

"They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day Whose evil flies far and wide. And they feed, *****FOR THE LOVE OF ALLAH, the indigent, the orphan, AND THE CAPTIVE - (Saying), 'We feed you For the sake of Allah alone: No reward do we desire from you, nor thanks.' (The Noble Quran, 76:7-9)"

INCLINATION TOWARDS PEACE AND PURSUING PEACE:

"But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in God: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things). (The Noble Quran, 8:61)"

"God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers. (The Noble Quran, 60:8)"

"And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for God. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers. (The Noble Quran 2:193)"
Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors. (The Noble Quran, 2:190)"

"On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. (The Noble Quran, 5:32)"

What bothers me is that everyone thinks he/she is an expert in Islam when they know nearly NOTHING about Islam! It's very deeply offensive and annoying.

Obviously you follow the path of idiocy also – religion of peace my a**. So far, within recent memory Islam has given nothing to the peace of this world. Its followers are either killing innocent people or not supporting human liberty, peace or even coming to the aid of others in a natural disaster. You offer nothing as evidence of this religion of peace except your contempt for anyone who disagrees with you. Just where is your religion of Peace, where are your peace keepers. They either wear the cloaks of destruction or the combat fatigues – looks manly on those unkempt, unwashed 14th century warriors. Skip the rhetoric about peace, the world knows differently and I suspect you are just another weak minded follower.

It matters little what's in the Quran as nobody, particularly Muslims appear to not have read the gospel or have any intentions of following the written word. Verse 4:34 of the Quran as translated by Ali Quli Qara'i reads:

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], STRIKE THEM.

9/11 is not a lie of course. We all saw the towers come down. Questions? Yes. The FBI and CIA are embarrassed as hell because they knew it was coming and did nothing. The Pentagon "airplane" looked an awful lot like something else since there were no bodies and no wings/engines etc. No – W did not do it but who did and who covered up the truth are open questions. Remember Bin Laden denied having done it at first – then jumped on to take credit. Like JFK the truth won't be known for years if ever.

I suppose that what happened at the Pentagon just coincidentally happened at the same time the rest of the 9/11 events were occurring, huh? Yeah, right! The reason there were no pieces of a plane found is because the speed of the aircaraft was so fast, and the impact to the building so strong that nothing was left to find; and you can't slow film down slow enough to show the plane clearly hitting the Pentagon. I am so tired of all the claims of 9/11 not happening, whether it is the entire thing, or partial, and anyone who thinks the US would deliberately bring down their own buildings, killing their own people and fabricate all these acts is just really stupid and naive; and knows NOTHING at all about the citizens or Government of the US.

There are also plenty of condo buildings with cameras on them, and there are LOCKEED MARTIN AND NORTHRUP GRUMAN headquarters only few blocks away! There are cameras all over the area. Why did the FBI confescate all of them if this wasn't a sick inside zionist and jewish lie done to the USA?

I'm personally agnostic and was raised Protestant, but I teach English to pre-matriculated international university students, the fastest growing group of which is from Saudi Arabia. I can assure you, I have taught a class with six Mohammeds, two Sultans, and two Abdullahs, and every one of them was immensely frustrated and disgusted with terrorists masquerading around as Muslims. Travel to Dearborn, Michigan, or interact with the growing number of Arabic immigrants in the US. That blanket statement "probably 99%" is racist and hateful, yes, but I'm unlikely to change your opinion about them. What I would like to see, however, is some respect for the truth. You have made no effort to find out what the facts are, and whether you end up hating Muslims in the end or not, you would be better off by respecting yourself enough to seek half-way decent answers.

Does it also include the 9/11 hoax and BS that was done by the zionists and jews? What terrorists are you talking about, kid? Without 9/11 what Muslim terrorists do you have? And we all know that 9/11 was a non-Muslim inside job done by jews and zionists.

We all DO NOT know that 9/11 was done by non-muslims and Jews. Only a very small fringe group of delusional liars believes that. There are mountains of evidence that this was a muslim operation, including many confessions, video, photographs (Muhammad Atta was a Jew?). The entire specter of Islam need to turn 180 degrees and take a long look at itself. The world is sick of your message and killing Islamists will become easier with each coming day. Yourf-ing dumb – guess what you are F-ing dumb. Obama personally approves (and takes responsibility) for every drone strike. Clearly if he is going to take the crap he wants to be certain only terrorists are hunted. And it was his personal mission and constant pushing that got OBL. Bush basically said "I don't know ether he is and I don't care". O made it a priority and you know the result.

Give me a break. Any, I repeat, any president would have ordered the strike. Drones were not as sophisticated when Bush was using them. I think its fair to say Bush a a bit more concerned with Pakistani sovreignty than Obama....

@jrzydvl Stop being a Bush apologist. The difference is Bush refused to focus on the primary job at hand. Obama focused on what America and the rest of the world wanted.....OBL's head. You can grade a President by his track record. Obama wins hands down.

Islam is the root of the problem. Muslim clerics, devout Muslims and Islamists are responsible for the violence, terrorism, hatred and discrimination around the world. These devil' worshipers transform ordinary people into irrational beasts capable of committing the worse atrocities without experiencing remorse or guilt. These guys are colluded with Muslim monarchs and leaders, thanks to their satanic Islamic religion, monarchs/leaders seized their countries wealth and natural resources (oil) entirely for themselves, they can have hundreds of concubines and all the sexual pleasures and exert absolute power over their people. In retribution to their allegiance , monarchs grant Islamic clerics well paid jobs such as judges, police, administrators, inquisitors, executioners, etc where they can impose and extend their diabolic Islamic system on their citizens and eventually around the world otherwise Satan can take away their privileges.

I'm beginning to think that the only non-voilent Muslim is one who is an apostate.

  18. Justic for all

Fellows, Check all these Al-Qaeda operatives and leaders who have been killed or captured- more than 90 per cent of them were in Pakistani territory. This Pakistan is supposed to be a partner to fight terrorism. The Pakistan military and its ISI operatives have been using chaos and terrorism as means to gain financial and political advantage for the most part of its existence since it was artificially became a nation in 1947. Why we are waiting? Don't you think it is time to place Pakistan the so called phoney Pakistan state fighting terrorism on the top of the list of nations that is promoting, facilitating terror pays for its crimes supporting these terrorists? Pakistan and its Intelligence Wing (ISI) by protecting the militants and terrorists have caused more death and destruction than any other nation in the past ten years for the Western allied forces in Afghanistan. Unless Pakistan is taken care of to become a non-terrorist nation, the world will not be a peaceful place. Let not kid ourselves focusing on Afghanistan. All planning of war against the Afghanistan people and allied forces are hatched in Pakistan and carried out by people who come from Pakistan side into Afghanistan with immunity and full protection of Pakistan security forces. (the former US Joint Chief of Staff clearly and loudly expressed its opinion that Pakistan was involved in such activities using militants such Haqqani network to attack Afghans and the allied forces.)

Root cause of all the problem is illiteracy. Throwing bomb and bullets is what Al-Qaeda want because it make it easy for them to recruit new blood which they desperately need. We have spend billions if not trillion since 9/11 already but we are far from reaching our desired goal. All we are doing is eliminating the front face and as soon as we get rid of that someone else takes over. If we really want to eliminate the problem we have to open the school in troubled area of the world and use education as our tool to confront Al-Qaeda. Education increase the tolerance level (for most ) and make people think logically.I wish we try this option as our first choice. Peace to all.

Israel's lies and propaganda pumped into US public in an ongoing basis will not work for them anymore, Americans had no business in the middle east, 9-11 was either done by Israelis or otherwise it was a reaction to American involvement in middle east because of Israelis. Without Israel as an "ally", US would be in far better place today. It's a one way relationship in which United States and its people lose and Israelis win. Americans get involved in wars, lose thousands of soldiers and enormous amount of money, gain enemies, lose credibility throughout the world, and suffer a bad economy. On top, Israel gains sympathy with the lies and propaganda and receive billions of US taxpayers' dollars as aid every year in addition to military and other aid. Israeli leaders and politicians disrespect Americans all the time, Jewish lobbies bully US politicians on a daily basis and threaten them with their votes. Israelis couldn't care less about welfare of US and its people, it's a one way relationship. With a "friend" like Israel, Americans never need any enemies, yet they have a lot now again thanks to Israel. Americans need to wake up, it's not Arabs that are your enemy like Israel brainwashes you through your government and the media controlled by them, it's the Jews.

Look, I'm no terrorist sympathizer, i just believe that our foreign policies are not working. I don't understand why we are over there for so long especially now that Bin Laden is dead. Iraq and Afghanistan was a huge foreign policy mistake and has only tarnished our relationships with other countries. I believe we could of killed Bin Laden without going all out and instead using covert tactics to dismantle his operation. Iraq was simply a bad call.

    • Let's think this one through

Well I don't know if people are actually saying that, more often I think people refer to Bin Ladin. However, in regards to your statement: Bush's numbers are over 7-8 years RIGHT AFTER the attacks, while Obama hasn't even reached the four year mark. Not to mention the fact that a lot of these people have had time to disappear.

Well Bush had a little over seven years in office after 9/11 and got 16 total (7 killed, 9 captured) and Obama has had about 3.5 years and has gotten 8 total. So the ratio is about the same. And I often hear Democrat commentators say that Obama has gotten more terrorists than Bush. They say that during practically every discussion on terrorism I see.

Go back to the top and read! It says this is a list of some of the dead. Not all of the dead. Bush killed alot, Obama killed alot. It's not a political game. This is a list of the MOST significant people, not ALL of the people.

      • Dolemite

It's only a political game because Democrat commentators continually attempt to disparage what Bush did after 9/11. President Obama is doing that right now trying to say what Romney would or wouldn't have done even though there's no way to tell what Romney would have done if he had all of the info Obama had.

Just to play devils advocate (because I do not think that the President has a tremendous impact on the day-to-day operations of the military and relies heavily on advisors that span administrations):

      1. Bush had 8 years, Obama's only had 4; and
      2. Bush got a lot of these people at the beginning of the war when they were more centrally located; and
      3. Obama got Osama. I know a couple other names on this list, but I guarantee you that most Americans do not.

Let's think about that for a minute. If Bin Laden was killed in 2002, don't you think Bush and Cheney would have taken credit for it then? You're making no sense. I suppose you also think Elvis is still alive. And he let Michael Jackson marry his daughter.

Al-Qaeda leaders are mostly Muslim clerics. Islamic clerics are colluded with Muslim monarchs and leaders to perpetuate their satanic Islamic religion, in exchange, Islamic clerics exert power over their people as judges, police, jurors, inquisitors, administrators, etc. Islam grants "divine rights" to monarchs, leaders and powerful people, they can seize their countries natural resources (oil) entirely for themselves, they can have hundreds of concubines and all the sexual pleasures, they can free or incarcerate anyone and always have the last word on any civil, military or religious matter. No wonder they must impose their diabolic Islamic religion otherwise Satan will take away their privileges.

Pretty disgusting that the publish button is appearing in Spanish. In no other country on earth, would you travel to and expect them to speak your language. I guess that is just arrogant Americans, right.

Pritch is right. Where on earth is second language appreciated or encouraged like here in the USA? Go to Mehico and try to get education in English. Good luck. Beut here we spend tons of dough to publish books in Spanish. Why? Some are taking advantage on this by making their kids learn Spanish at schools at our expense.

Bigot! If you can speak Spanish and English, then you can speak to at least 60% of the population on the Americas side of the globe. Not to mention, in Europe most people can speak two or three languages. Further, America is an imperialist country, colonists. The Spanish, Native-Americans and Mexicans were already in what you (Pritch!) know to be America today. Wake up! English is only one of five to seven thousand languages still left in this world – so in actuality such a complaint hardly has an audience.

The war against terrorism is far from over. What we are seeing now is a media that is making a conscious decision to not report on the war any longer. I would like to see an honest article that polled college kids to see if they even realize that we are still fighting 2 wars. My guess is that most of them would say the wars are both over. Of course that might expose the left for something, so don't count on that.

No. I remember the outrage and protesting of the anti-war left under Bush, and I applauded it. However hypocrisy has been shown since 2008 when a democrat was elected. After that the anti-war left has been mostly silent, and thugs like Pelosi and Reid who railed against the war so hard under Bush shut their mouths and fell in line. Where was the outrage when Obama's promise of all troops out of Iraq within 10 months of being elected was broken? Where was the outrage when he expanded the war in Afghanistan?

KSM was captured in Pakistan in March 2003 and has been held at Guantanamo since 2006. He is one of five 9-11 planners currently held there. Of course, the 9-11 attacks killed 2,976 people, plus KSM confessed to chopping journalist Daniel Pearl’s head off with a rusty pocketknife because Pearl was a jew. At his inaugural address in 2009 Obama promised to close Guantanamo with no alternate long term detention plan. Remember, the legal regime surrounding criminal accused and their due process in federal jurisprudence is apples and oranges with the regime surrounding unlawful combatants and the law of war. While the military has long wanted to prosecute KSM before a military commission, Obama’s attorney General Eric Holder sought in 2009 to try him in New York City, but reversed that decision after intense NYC opposition. KSM will be prosecuted by military commission at Guantanamo at a date to be determined.

    (1) who do you want to live under? A bunch of zealots from the stone age who, if you do not follow tjheir rules, will shoot you in the back of the head or throw acid in your daughters face if she contridicts them OR (2) Live in a free society (with it's faults) where you do not have to worry about a group of turban wearing relgious whackos knocking on your door and dragging you off to prison (or worse)?

Thanks for thanking the troops instead of saying other hateful and ignorant things. Every religion has extremists, causing harm to others. The only exception is Buddists, who, rarely protest, and if they do, only harm themselves. This is about capturing terrorists, not attacking religions. Very few people in the military hate Muslims, its only terrorists. Erik Rudolf was a perfect example of a Christian terrorist. All Christians don't hate themselves because of him. There are extremests everywhere. Hate hate, not other peoples faith.

Good to see more Americans are finally waking up! Americans need to wake up, it's not Arabs that are your enemy like Israel brainwashes you through your government and the media controlled by them, it's the Jews.

papysox: Conspiracy – I like that word. Anyay, there are three types of people that predominate when this word is used. Those who disbelieve the evidence given to us by those who seek to control what we believe about the world- conspiracy nuts: those who believe the evidence given to us by those who seek to control what we believe about the world- gullible nuts; those who have access to the information and determine which parts they will report or hide as they seek to control how we view the world around us (call them what you will). Whuile there may be other categories, I think this generally allows each of us to fall in one. You pick and choose.

Sharon – I agree there are 3 kinds of people, the conspiracy nuts, the gullible, and those who research the information before coming to a conclusion. I, for one, used to be a conspiracy nut and believed that 9/11 was an inside job, because I watched the movie that "exposed" it, but within the last several years I have cooled down a little, and I decided to research the issue and see what the other information points towards, and at the time I did this research I was undecided. I did a lot of research before coming to a conclusion. There are so many issues that the people who think it was a conspiracy of the US government raise, so many of those issues are beyond the scope of my reply. But, basically, the main foundation of the argument that those who think it was the US govt was that the buildings would not have collapsed the way they did if there was not a bomb in the building that was detonated from a lower level. The fact is that those who came up with this hypothesis were not engineers and thus their motivation for thinking this was based on their speculation of how the building would collapse.
But I have talked to engineers and it is well known among structural engineers that the explosion from the fuel would cause the metal to bend, the floors would collapse, creating the billowing of smoke and this repeating in a chain reaction. Any well educated structural engineer knows this, and such people cannot be fooled by these arguments by people who know nothing about structural engineering. Furthermore, why would Bush kill a bunch of rich American Republican businessmen? There was a video (with a British accent woman speaking), can't remember the name, that went through many of the main points, and it was very honest and mentioned even those points which made it seem like a conspiracy and were left unanswered by those saying it's not a conspiracy. But on most of the points, the conspiracy was disproven. If it were a coverup, this video would probably have presented 1-side propaganda and left out vital information that the other side raised as points. Yes, there have been US government conspiracies. But 9/11 is not one of them.

Against the tenets of Islam? Do quote, please. Because I can pull out quite a few quotes from the Quran and Hadiths that point to terrorism being at the heart of Islam.

American Soldier. Remember civilians will not under stand, the thing you must grasp Is that you must Not go John Wayne there are good in with the bad and you must be able to distinguish between the 2. It is all about the religion. I'll tell you this, all of them are christians all the religions branched off from christianity. Here in the United States we have a bigger war you know the religious especially the church Know that JESUS is in the Unitd States in the flesh they do not and will not acknowledge this, they Think if they continue there terrorism and futile goal of trying to kill me then all will be in there good. So this is for the religions GOD THE FATHER will NEVER let me die, it would be the same as HIM being killed and HE cannot be killed, the crucifixion is a BIG FAT LIE. GOD loves HIS military.

American Soldier, this is the exact mentality "not givnig f about morals and ethics", which is going to be the downfall of our country. You are not better than these so-called Muslim Jihadists. I wish less and less emotionally unstable pricks like you are recruited in our military.

Well if their objective was to create terror they suceeded. After 2 multi-trillion dollar wars that have caused massive inflation average people are now dealing with food-insecurity.

We have a dictatorial government that refuses to allow peaceful protests in our own country now (Occupy Wall Street Eviction).

Iraq now belongs to the fundamentalists for the first time since saddam took control Iraq has also nationalized their oil supply so we got nothing from there. The country that all of the 9/11 hijackers but 1 (Saudi Arabia) is still standing because we didn't go to war with them.

So if their Objective was to create "Terror" Then they won if it was to create the biggest mess in the past 30+ years then year they did a good job.

The terrorists are savages. They murder innocents. However, us being paranoid by them only makes us act just as savagely. Considering how we're a country in trouble, I think it's time to take our attention to the dynamics of this country and not foreign terrorism.

All twelve killed without due process.
All twelve captured and held indefinitely without due process.
It sounds like there are some really big moral and ethical problems surrounding this report. It makes me sick.

Those who were murdered on 9-11 was there a due process?
"It is he right of a government to do what it takes to secure its people, and that includes chasing foreign and domestic terrorists. No one is forced to live in the U.S. If you find its system immoral, you have a chose since the US is democratic, and its government chasing terrorists guarantees you the right to criticize and don't have to worry about getting decapitated by savages.

Freedom Supporter- You said the 9/11 victims didn't have a due process. However, the people who didn't give them one and murdered them cowardly were savages. Are you implying that the USA is just as savage as them? So you're willing to lose our moral and ethical standpoint from which we were founded from to catch a few terrorists? If that's your thinking, we've already lost. You're no freedom supporter, good sir, you're quite the opposite.

Look both of you, who think its wrong to kill these people with out "due process." I am currently deployed to afghanistan fighting for your sorry asses to make comments like this. I would gladly shoot these people with out hesitation. The reason being, is not because my mother didnt raise me to have good morals, its because i have watched countless buddies of mine die because of these people. That what all of you forget is that we are still over here, fighting for your right to criticize. Just remember who these people are hurting, who they have hurt, and who gives a f*** about morals and ethics.

Due process???? When a SWAT team kills a man holding a gun to another person's head saying they are going to kill said person, are they wrong because "due process" wasn't followed? A government agency has the right and responsibility to protect its citizens when a person or group advocates violence AND has the means to follow through on it threats. These people both advocated and had means, so the government is using its resources to carry out its responsibility.
