Americans see Iran as a bigger threat to the United States than North Korea, according to a new poll.
The CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday showed 81% view Iran as a very serious or moderate threat to the U.S. Three quarters of Americans said North Korea represents a similar threat.
The secretary of defense has said that Iran is viewed as a more significant threat because if it obtained nuclear weapons the country would destabilize the entire region.
“Iran is a country that is – does not behave according to international rules, is engaged in spreading terrorism, in destabilizing countries in that part of the world, and a country that operates on that basis becomes extremely dangerous if it obtains a nuclear weapon,” Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said last March at a press conference.
The new poll found a small majority were hopeful the situation with the Asian country could be resolved with economic and diplomatic efforts. However, if those efforts fail, nearly six in ten would oppose U.S. military action against North Korea.
The isolationist North Korea attempted to launch a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea.
Just over half of respondents thought Syria was a serious or moderate threat to this country. But most Americans did not view Russia the same way, with a majority saying the country is just a slight threat to the U.S. or no threat at all.
The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International between April 13 and April 15, with 1,015 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error was plus or minus three percentage points.
OK..now cue the anti-Israel and anti-USA nutbags.
Why? You need competition?
North Korea should be offered a deal --done very discreetyly such as financial compensation to all its political and military elite --in order to have it permanently abandon its Weapons program and it should also be offered a plan for it to either re unite peacefully with the South or remain an autonomous country with reforms? No rhetoric or threats! If it chooses not to comply then unite all ally's against it-more political pressure and knowing that all country's are against it will make it unbearable 4 it!!!! As for Iran-same thing with a twist- If it don't comply a fund should be established in order to make OIL obsolete- Non fossil fuel vehicles are and should be made possible!! This includes aircraft!! I know its possible!!
Iran hasn't broken the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. They continue to adhere to the lowest level of the letter of the law, no more, but they do adhere to it strictly. That is a fact. What the USA and Europe want is for Iran to go under a higher monitoring protocol with added oversight and additional people on the ground that isn't mandated in the treaty. Iran had agreed to this previously but stopped because the West keeps ratcheting up sanctions and gives them no reason to go through with the additional steps. The West has tried to play all gunboat diplomacy with their big stick against Iran and these are a very proud, very nationalistic people who told the USA and other Western countries to go screw. This gunboat diplomacy goes back decades, back at least to when the CIA got the Shah back on the throne of Iran after a popular revolution kicked him out in the early 50's. What the USA needs to do is stop treating Iran like a bunch of savages and like a large, technologically advanced nation. Make Iran a fair and reasonable offer that profits both sides like normalization of relations and trade for the highest monitoring level of all their nuclear activities.
The Jewish Media – POLL – CNN > wants you to believe Iran is more dangerous – amazing how CNN spins the FACTS.
Jerry? Ya right. How about Mustafa or Abdul?
Willard, half the people don't see Russia as the number one geopolitical threat.
Time to shake your etch-a-sketch, and rework GOP foreign policy.
Rick Perry, you need a new etch-a-sketch, so we can move on about the country of Turkey being a terrorist nation, it is actually a NATO ally.
Does this suprise anyone? Does this even need be published? North Korea is that fly buzzing in your ear that no one wants to put the effort into squashing.
I think both countries are an equal threat when you consider that cash starved NK is more likely to sell nukes to the black market which could result in a terrorist group getting their hands on one.
Just more proof of how dumbed down Americans are.
actually the us public is right on..........iran is the biggest threat, you know why? because it acts very irrationally.
tell me one country in the woRld where its leaders favor or sacrifice the interest of their people for other people.
iranian leaders sacrificed iran's interests for palestnians. i hope the palsetinians can now buy the oil that no body is buying.
let the sanctions hurt soooo bad , so iranians learn to respect international law and get to know their real power and limits in the world.........they have been acting like a punk kid in a classroom for way too long............let things get so bad khamenie dies from depression and his son gets the boot
I don't know how YOU define irrationally, but for a country that hasn't attacked any other country in an unprovoked first strike in centuries – "irrational" is the last word I'd use for them.
I think the Iranian regime is just becoming big headed 'leting them acquire their nuclear ambitions in the name of "thier rights " is the craziest thing the world could ever allow, coz even the other countries that have been fearing to developing nuclear weapons will also start giving an excuse of nuclear energy.Another thing that disturbs ma mind is these baised media the likes of R.TV most of its interview is about the U.S
Iran is a bigger threat than North Korea and Israel is a bigger treat that both of them together.
No...but you're stupid anyway!
Why do you say that? Who has Israel threatened? I don't remember Israel, the lone Democratic nation in that whole part of the world, threatening to wipe any nation off the map. Or I haven't seen Israelis strapping bombs to themselves and blowing people up. Have you?
They don't threaten – they just do......
Maybe it's because you don't see Fat Chin Lee talking trash about the US at UN meetings every other Friday.
Iran a bigger threat to the US than N Korea?
Kinda like saying which Kardasian sister will be the first to get an advanced degree in themo-dynamics.
You mean a GED.
Looks like fatboy Kim tried to get The Situation's haircut....he better GTL.
I wonder if Fat boy Kim tells the women who 'service' him that they should be happy, they get to sleep with a God tonight!
Why don't you suck his dick and find out.
What specifically was the question asked to the respondents? That's what I want to know. The country that's constantly being harassed and interfered with and which doesn't have nuclear weapons is the "threat"?? I would have to know what SPECIFICALLY was asked and who conducted the poll to know whether or not it has an iota of credibility.
i work for orc and did this survey it wasnt biased at all ...
That didn't answer my question. I don't know you and your word or your vouching for something is worthless to me.
I took a poll and it turns out that most people believe that polls are full of crap.
TEHRAN – The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations has said that Tehran will not negotiate with the major powers over its inalienable rights.
Ambassador Mohammad Khazaii made the remarks during an interview with the Washington-based radio network NPR on February 9.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to engage in negotiations with the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany), but it will not negotiate over its inalienable rights, Khazaii stated.
Furthermore, Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran is not after acquiring military atomic technology but resolute to continue with its nuclear energy program.
We “will never, ever suspend our activities, including [uranium] enrichment,” he added.
IT IS THE INALIENABLE RIGHT OF EVERY SOVEREIGN STATE IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING IRAN AS STATED IN NPT TO ENRICH URANIUM.
Iran is determined to continue nuclear energy program, US sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities have been ineffective.
He also said that Tehran will send a letter to European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represents the six major powers in nuclear negotiations with Iran.
Iran is ready to hold serious talks without preconditions, he added.
IRAN WILL REFUSE A BILETERAL MEETING WITH US DUE TO NO-DIPLOMATIC-RELATIONSHIP, SANCTIONS, US RHETORICS TO BOMB IRAN AND FLORIDA, AFGHANISTAN QURAN BURNINGS.
But those who think that Iran will change its logical and principled policy under the pressure of sanctions, threats are mistaken, Khazaii said, adding that the Islamic Republic has never made concessions on its absolute rights.
May God and Allah help us all.
It is no longer a "who is right or who is wrong game."
It is simply who will blow up who first, and how bad the fallout will be.
I pray to my God that I am wrong. Please pray with me to your God that I am wrong as well.
Uhhh....then maybe their President shouldn't be threatening to "Wipe Countries off the Map."
And maybe you should stop LYING about presidents threatening to "wipe countries off the map"
Article IV of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)

2. All the Parties to the Treaty undertake to facilitate, and have the right to participate in, the fullest possible exchange of equipment, materials and scientific and technological information for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Parties to the Treaty in a position to do so shall also co-operate in contributing alone or together with other States or international organizations to the further development of the applications of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, especially in the territories of non-nuclear-weapon States Party to the Treaty, with due consideration for the needs of the developing areas of the world.
Article X. Establishes the right to withdraw from the Treaty giving 3 months' notice. It also establishes the duration of the Treaty (25 years before 1995 Extension Initiative).
UN CHARTER VII ARTICLE 51:
Provides for the right of countries to engage in military action in self-defense, including collective self-defense (i.e. under an alliance) FOR IRAN TO RETALIATE WITH EQUAL FORCE IF ATTACKED.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST ANTI IRAN, ANTI MUSLIM BS CREATED BY US ON BEHALF OF UNBREAKABLE BOND ISRAEL.
WELL SAID SIR!
Well Abdul, I give you props for using your real name. Not using Jerry, Bill, Dave, Sam like the other Muslim bloggers.
World considers US, Israel threat not Iran: Chomsky
American scholar Noam Chomsky says the world does not accept the US portrayal of Iran as an “imminent threat” to global peace, and that Washington and Tel Aviv are instead seen as greater evils.
“There is little credible discussion of just what constitutes the Iranian threat, though we do have an authoritative answer, provided by US military and intelligence. Their presentations to Congress make it clear that Iran doesn’t pose a military threat,” Chomsky wrote in his latest article titled “What Are Iran’s Intensions?” published Friday.
Chomsky added that even "the majority of Americans" recognized Iran’s right to its nuclear energy program before Washington officials and media launched a “massive propaganda onslaught” against the Islamic Republic over the past two years.
He added that presently powerful countries like Russia, China, India, and 120 member nations of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) oppose the US policy on Iran.
“Western commentary has made much of how the Arab dictators allegedly support the US position on Iran, while ignoring the fact that the vast majority of the population opposes it-a stance too revealing to require comment,” he said.
Instead, Chomsky said, “Europeans regard Israel as the greatest threat to world peace,” and in the Arab world he added, “Israel and the US are regarded as the pre-eminent threat.”
The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program and have used this pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic and to call for a military strike against Tehran.
Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Israel, which is widely believed to be the sole possessor of a nuclear arsenal in the Middle East with over 200 undeclared nuclear warheads, pursues the policy of "deliberate ambiguity" on its nuclear program.
Tel Aviv has rejected global demands to join the NPT and does not allow IAEA inspectors to observe its controversial nuclear program.
Iran has always pursued the policy of nuclear transparency and has granted IAEA inspectors access to its nuclear facilities to conduct snap inspections.
Israel and The US are seen as more threatening than Iran.
Gauging Arab public opinion
A new, comprehensive poll illuminates Arabs' opinions on democracy, corruption, Palestine/Israel, and the US.
The first of its kind – a poll conducted in 12 Arab countries, representing 84 per cent of the population of the Arab world, in an attempt to gauge the region's political mood – has arrived at some interesting results.
Organised by the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), face-to-face interviews by Arab surveyors with 16,731 individuals in the first half of 2011 revealed majority support for the goals of the Arab revolutions and notably, for a democratic system of government.
The countries surveyed included Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania, with the help of local institutions and research centres.
While people seem generally split on the question of separation of state and religion, a majority supports the non-interference of religious authorities in politics.
And by a 15-1 ratio, Israel and the US are seen as more threatening than Iran. However, this ratio is lower among those living in proximity to Iran.
Opinions differ on certain issues from country to country and region to region, but there's clearly a trans-national, trans-border public consensus when it comes to questions of identity and national priorities.
The data generated by the poll, the largest conducted so far in the region, is a treasure trove for those looking to better understand the political environment in the Arab world.
Years and years ago, when I was in a boarding school, I had an Iranian room mate who shall go unnamed. He was a cheerful delightful guy who spoke reallly good English and had a passion for ice hocky matches in NYC. At some point, he explained to me that Iran was Persia. At the age of 17, I said that, that was nice, not reallly giving it much consideration. Fifty years later, I wonder what has happened with Ebrahim. He had the skillls to thrive in the US.., I had no skills to survive in Persia.
I 'd like to believe that governments are concerned with me and the Ebrahims. Government consistantly trys to insist they represent the people, when, in fact, they represent their own, distorted, self fulfilling interests. Persians are wonderful people.., governments have a talent to distort and screw things up beyond repair.
Must be polling the one percent of the population that is all Jewish.
Sooner or later some idiot has to blame it on the jews. Guess it was just your turn, right ?
What would you do when he comes for you??????????
What would you do when he comes for you?
All the problems of the world is the fault of the Jews
How did he "blame" anything on the Jews. His statement didn't assign blame. He just said they must be polling Jews (probably Israel Firster), and it seems correct since Iran is not a threat to the US...well not unless we attack them unprovokedly.
Sooner or later some fool has to blame it on the jews. Guess it was just your turn, right ?
I take that back. I just did a great disservice to Spanky. But this Korean military puppet should be called "Dear Eater" before anything else. Millions of starving N. Koreans and this little butterball keeps pokin new holes in his belt.
Ahh who we kiddin? They both kinda suck! Ahmanutjob on one side and the Korean version of Spanky on the other!
"81% view Iran as a very serious or moderate threat to the U.S." I call BS on that. You guys aren't THAT stupid. NO way.
Kim Jong Jr. so ronery!!!
SANDEEP!! WE GOT SANDEEP!!
durka jihad muhammad allah!!! baka laka daka!!! sherpa sherpa durka!!!
Maybe NK and Iran can join forces for a successful rocket launch. NK will provide the gun powder to fuel the engine and Iran can provide 300 camels to pull back a giant slingshot and----–off it goes.
You really are a load your mother should've swallowed.
But its funny, so you look the fool.....
Why can't the media attempt to educate people rather than conduct polls that have no meaning or value?
All this hype is for power, money, oil, sell weapons to prevent democracy in the middle east so the axis of evil (US, UK, Israel) can rip off the people of middle, depriving them of their democracy, human rights, and wealth under the cover of fake human rights, democracy, and freedom claim!? Axis of evil supports the most dictatorship regimes in the Middle East (i.e. Saudi, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Mubarak Egypt, Yemen, etc). Iran is the only democracy for all not like Israel for Zionist Jews only!?
YOU ARE NUTZ!
Speaka dee Engrish man! Herrrrroooooo!
Christian Americans are truly stupid. A Moslem rules your country. Jews run your Government and your Foreign Policy is set by Israel. Indians have taken away your jobs. China has taken away you industries and manufacturing. Israel-Firsters keep you sacrificing your blood and money for their Eratz Israel. Japan has taken away your steel industry. Clothing industry is snatched away by Pakistan, Bangladesh, Guam, Guatemala. You owe billions to Saudi and China. The wars have dragged you into debts of trillions. Your unemployment has risen 10 folds and all you guys care about is trashy reality shows about Kardashians. even that, Bollywood is about to surpass Hollywood.so keep guzzling beer and watch US decline into a 4th rate country slowly but surely.
Right on!, baby.
Man u must be smoking some strong rock
Not really, cuz crackheads rarely spout the truth, as this person has.
Yeah, buddy... stick it where the sun don't shine!!
Hate to say it, but he's right, for the moment. Several years ago the Japanese prime minister said Americans were lazy, and for years we were back to work. It's worn off now and 20% of the country wants someone else to work and support them so they don't have to.
This is BS. Israel is a bigger threat than Iran and N Korea put together. What are you doing CNN? Softening the people so they accept your zionist war?
The real axis of evil (US,UK, Israel) is being kicked out of the middle east eventually starting with the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued with the Arab spring to free the people of middle. Wars in the middle started with the creation of the Zionist regime of Israel with the support of the axis of evil to market their weapons of mass destruction and gain more profit by raising the oil prices!? In the process impose dictators to help deprive them from their natural resources. Iran opposes that!?
That's EXACTLY what they're doing.
SPINACH DIP!!! AWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!! EAT MY SPINACH DIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
North Korea is indeed a big threat... But I feel bad for its citizens though, considering they are simply human beings caught in a terrible regime. http://WeAreNorthKorea.org is a good way to help innocent North Koreans.
CNN should conduct a poll to see if Americans understand what caused the 1978 "Iranian Revolution."
“Blowback" is a CIA term first used in March 1954 in a recently declassified report on the 1953 operation to overthrow the government of Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran. It is a metaphor for the unintended consequences of the US government's international activities that have been kept secret from the American people. The CIA's fears that there might ultimately be some blowback from its egregious interference in the affairs of Iran were well founded. Installing the Shah in power brought twenty-five years of tyranny and repression to the Iranian people and elicited the Ayatollah Khomeini's revolution.”
–'Blowback' by Chalmers Johnson
this little monkey is the real threat to the humanity
Israels aggression is dangerous, more so than Irans fairytale nuclear bomb.
More PR hype. Neither is a threat to America itself and NK is no threat at all. Iran COULD be considered a threat to American CORPORATE interests in the mid east. No sword ratling because that benefits the oil companies who are behind the PR companies that put this idle garbage out there.
I don't know how Americans see Iran as a threat.. You really think they'll attack you..? Well, I can certainly say we have attacked them. The terrorist group in Iran, the MEK, has been directly, then indirectly been supported by the United States. So why doesn't Iran attack us for that? Well, as far as they're concerned, its not a country, and it doesn't have much support, though still a terrorist organization and treated as such. So still why do Americans think Iran is such a big threat? All foreigners probably know the answer to that question.. Lol?
“Americans see Iran as a bigger threat to the United States than North Korea”
If Americans didn’t see it, they missed what the main stream media has been telling them about Iran for years.
Axis of dEvil
Iran a threat? hardly. If you want to know the real threat to the US, it isnt Iran, Iraq, Israel, or North Korea. The real threat is China, they are the only country with superior military might than the US. Also they too have nuclear weapons. quit saying a country with 0 nuclear weapons is a threat.
China barely has a navy when compared to the US. They can invade Taiwan but they arent a military threat to the US.
China is a bigger threat economically than militarily for the moment.
Actually, reports say that China is still 20 years behind in terms of military technology, though yes they do have the largest standing army in the world. With the newly estimated 3,000 miles of tunnels reported to be found after an earthquake which for some reason thousands of radiation inspectors were called upon afterwards, it was estimated that China has possibly up to 3,000 nuclear weapons. Yes, China is developing their own military technology, but they still buy 5th-gen. equipment off Russia, so no, they don't have superior military technology.
Typical zi0nist jews trying to ratchet up another war for their puny little Israhell. Better not fall for it this time
Oh, this will anger the Chubby Leader.
North Korea has the bomb already dont they? Iran just can keep a secret better, yeah they have it, they are both trouble, but we have known that for 20+ years. The solution for Iran is to come up with alternative fuel and tell all the arab nations to choke on their oil, why haven.t we done that? Oh thats right, all our politicians are blowing the oil companies, someday, hopefully someone will step in and do the right thing, but I think we will be wiped out before that happens.
N Korea's army and military might are orders of magnitude higher than Iran's, and despite both countries having a totalitarian regime, Iran's is less so (hmmm, so I guess it can't be "totalitarian" by definition), and its population is CERTAINLY less brainwashed. N Korea is, in my mind, much more of a threat to not only the US but to world stability. These koo ks not only HAVE a nuclear weapon, they're ready to use it.
I have only one opinion, and I really dont care what my Government thinks. I am afraid of one nuke, be it a ICBM or a suitcase dirty bomb, and someone willing to use it. N Korea or Iran, the world would land on them like a ton of bricks. The bad news is so much nuclear materials have disappeared over the last 60+ years that anyone could have them. Its only a matter of time before it happens, and the global response will be united.
Does anyone one really think that either one of these countries is truly a threat to the US?
How delusional if they do.
Its funny that none of the people I know in Missouri have ever taken a poll on who is a threat to America. The biggest threat in America is the ignorance of the American people and the lack of Americans that are willing to stand against governments like ours. America has no need for threats when Romney and Obama are the heads of the political agenda. Its white America, and the lack of knowledgeable minorities, and the distances between races of all Statures that have this country more divided then any law or decision made by Obama or congress. We should blame ourselves for this and all the years before now, all the older people bitching about medicare should look back to the stupid shit they allowed to happen in the 1930's through to the 1990's, because white America will never admit they are wrong in the choices they made in those earlier days of America, and in that, it will be the reason our children and Grandchildren will have now future with out war. To many White decision makers for the many races of America. Represent all races then make the decisions on Americas coming days. Kuck Romney and Obama, We dont need dems or reps, we need unity of common peoples before we can worry about the fake threats coming from a country that cant ever pipe clean water to its most deserving people.
did they forget that both these countries are working together on rocket designs? On of htese days these clowns are going get it right just by accident.
The US owns the combination of the world's nuclear weapon, are we the threat to others?
You should check out what the US did with its nukes to the people of Marshall Island.
Dont drink the koolaid folkss, zi0nists trying to get another war going.
Dont drink the koolaid folks, zi0nists trying to get another war going.
Only Sarah Palin, Barbara Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Dick Cheney are capable of solving our problems.
You forgot Michele Bachmann.
aMD nEWT gINGRICH TOO.
HaHa! It has the same percentage of truth like Iraq's WMD accusations. Shame! We lost trillions on which hunt.
Got our hands soaked with blood of 200,000 Iraqis lives. Lost 4,000 US soldiers. All blame goes on the hands of Bush and Blair plus war mongering US media.
It is called Propaganda – and you folks are the target.
The troops (rather privatized these days) are not even home from the WMD hunt in Iraq yet.
Cost Trillions – but you got a tax cut – right? Connected any dots – yet?
Now we have a new enemy – same as the old one – not terrorists – but disinformation – and it is everywhere.
Learn enough to pass a 5th grade quiz about the modern history of Iran and the US!
“AIPAC is currently lobbying for a lower and more ambiguous threshold of "nuclear capability" as the trigger for a U.S. attack on Iran.”
The propaganda is relentless. From declassified FBI Files, see page 76.
CNN keep promoting these none sense articles. Israel lobbies in US as well as narrow minded leaders in Israel keep making lots of noise and investing lots of money in broadcase services in US to promote Iran as biggest threat.
The poll either was conducted among a group of people who are very pro-war, or Americans in general are rather clueless. Iran does not possess a nuclear weapon. Its leaders state that possessing nuclear weapons is in violation of the Q'ran. North Korea does have nuclear weapons, its leadership has no religons qualms about having and prrobably using them, and despite the recent faiure of its attempts to launch a satellite it does have long range missiles which presmably could deliver a nuclear strike againstthe U.S.
An Iranian ship delivered North Korean Nukes to Syria last month. They are to be smuggled into Israel.
Apparently critical thinking isn't your forte. N. Korea doenst have long range missles. And a Missle and Rocket is essentially the samething, except that rockets are capable of traveling at a faster velocity. The technology is the same for both platforms. As well as, there isn't any religion in N.Korea and if any particular religion is practice, then it's conducted underground and not in plain view.
As for Iran's nuclear ambitions, they do posses a huge threat to the entire world. Roughly 60% of the world's oil goes threw the Straight of Hormez. And Iran could cause issues there. Also, Iran sponsors and supports two international terrorist organizations. And as far as the intelligence community, N.Korea doesnt support terrorist groups. Iran also, has made more then enough threats to several nations. And probably the biggest is that Iran has already enriched Uranium to just over 20%. And there's no need to go over 18% unless your goal is to enrich up to 93%. Once you hit the 93 mark you have a full weapons grade munition. For medical purpose you only have to enrich from 15% to 18% and for energy purpose only need to enrich from 3% to 5%. Iran will use the bomb as a threat tactic to get what it wants...we have already seen this tactic with N.Korea. Also Iran is so religious that their top 4 mullahs (leaders) believe that once the infidel is eradicated that the 12th Imam (and supposedly missing) will arise to be the last caliphate to rule the world in peace and under sharia/islamic jurisprudence. Then you have the issue of Iran giving the terrorist organizations they support giving them the blueprints in how to make a nuclear weapon. More than likely, would provide the materials and know how in how to build it efficently. Then you'll also have a nuclear arms race in that region. And we don't need an already unstable region being in possesson of these weapons and sitting ontop ot the worlds largest oil reserves to hold the world hostage per se.
I hope the aforementioned information (which is factual) explains enough for you to understand that your comment wasn't well thought. Iran is essentially using the same strategy and the same play book that N.Korea used. When K.korea clandestinely created their weapons grade nuclear program.
IT doesn't matter what you may try to rationalize. e are not going to WAR with anyone else... Got is slick??
As long as the propaganda machine Israel wants to get rid of an enemy, it will always come up far ahead in polls. Jews make the results come out that way. Nobody buys it, everybody knows that Israel is far more violent than any other world nation and is a bigger threat to world peace. Israel already created religious hatred and polarization among the world in the last decade, that country alone is the worst enemy of the United States.. yet the clueless Americans that fall for it all think that it's their ally. Wake up America!
The big differences between Israel and Iran are:
Israel is 7,200 square miles, and Iran is 88 times as big.
Iran has 30,000 rockets stationed within 100 miles of all Israeli cities (in Southern Lebanon, controlled
by their proxy Hezbollah), and Israel does not (being 1,000 miles away from Teheran).
Israel has been attacked by 5 Arab armies in 1948 with the goal of destroying it, and that war was never
formally ended with an instrument of surrender by the attacking Arab armies, thus Israel is formally still at war,
while Iran is not.
Dianne says Israel is "violent". Well, so were the US and Britain during WWII.
If you don't want Israel to be "violent", best refrain from attacking it multiple times with armies, sending terrorists in to blow up her pizzerias, busses and discotheques.
In short, Dianne, get a life. Israel is three one-hundreths of one percent of the land mass in the Middle East. It has not engaged in belligerent activities with any country which has not threatened it. And for those of you who fritter away your lives crying the blues whenever someone who tries to harm themselves get harmed, pity you cannot find something more useful to do with your life. You only live once.
Maybe they are just pissed, because the CIA ovderthrew their goverment 63 years ago? Maybe they ahve long memories, unlike you who only see today and not history.
Neither are a threat to the US. If either ever attacked the US, we could wipe them off the planet in less than 24 hours. If we simply wanted to toppled their governments and destroy every city, would could do so in a few weeks with conventional bombs.
The media and politicians are playing you.
Hardly surprising given the propaganda from Likud and the MIC.
The biggest threat to the American people is the American people. Being too forgiving to the wealthy corporations and their tax breaks and outsourcing. Stuck on Facebook and unaware of the issues. Supporting disasterous wars and electing (and reelecting) those who send troops to be killed in them.
Regretfully, what choices do we have? Republicans or Democrats, dumb or dumber, not trying to be funny just frustrated we have no one that truly represents the common man any more. Any realistic, possible suggestions out there?
well , u tout democracy. so do something about it! at least we Europeans go out to streets and protest our heads off.
People need to calm the F*^@ down!
It's odd that we value a poll of the American public regarding the relative threat of states in the international community. The average American can't name the US States bordering their own, doesn't know the names of their Senators, and most couldn't find North Korea or Iran on a map to save their lives.
Because it just matters if you are Democrat or Republican, (spit in a can), now what can you say about that? Hmmm?
And that is exactly why they see North Korea and Iran as threats, because they are rather ignorant of their geographic and strategic position in the world. Sure, N. Korea's missiles might be able to hit Alaska, or Japan at best, but that's if they worked. They couldn't even get their last space-rocket to work...
Iran, on the other hand, could hit Israel, or Turkey, or Saudi Arabia, but they wont. They're completely surrounded by hostile nations, and it would mean the end of their regime. Not to mention the fact that the Ayatollah is pretty anti-war and anti-nuke.
No single nation is a threat to the U.S., not even China. Its everyone teaming up against us that we should be on guard for. Luckily, we're pretty good at destabilizing entire regions and preventing that sort of thing from happening XD
Sounds like you should give up your citizenship. Your saying that the ayatollah is peaceful is ludicrous. Who do you think sponsors Hamas. Iran wants to spread its theocracy but realizes it can only do so in destabilized areas. If you wish to support their activities then go to their camps but quit spreading your bull.
Well said @ pozin. You hit the nail right on the head. As far as the idiot making the comment you responded to. Well apparently when it comes to critical thinking, it's not their forte. And that's what scares me and plenty of others. Is that so many people in America and other western nations seem to be so lackadasical about world/current events.
Interesting that we all accept the world's worst kept secret – that Israel has nukes. Where was the outrage when that happened? We've caught them spying on us but somehow that's okay? How about the new settlements on the West Bank? The US has a fairly large, patriotic and affluent Jewish population, but they shouldn't be supported without some level of fairness applied to their behavior in the region. It's very difficult to put the genie back in the bottle...
"The average American can't name the US States bordering their own, doesn't know the names of their Senators, and most couldn't find North Korea or Iran on a map to save their lives."
You are wrong, the average American knows these important matters! There are many who don't, can't or simple don't care!
You severely underestimate the America people; not everyone is as ignorant as you think! We are not the blame for everything that is happening in the middle east and Afghanistan. We have not started everything. The Middle East has been at war long before America was even thought of! They (until the end of time) will always be! Yes, America should not be so aggressive and really needs to draw back while still paying attention to possible threats. The people who want to end us are here and still coming...not if...WHEN! We will fight, we may not win but they will know the Average American will stand our ground and go down with the ship!
Neither of these countries is a threat to America. Typical Neocon schemes involve creating enemies when there are none in order to solidify a country. The top threats to America are the Royal families of Europe, World Government seekers such as members of Bilderberg, and the banking families who control the private Federal Reserve.
They are both true threats but are being held in check. You do realize that NK has been getting nuclear information to those we do not wish to have it do you not? Did you know that NK while accepting our food aid has been counterfeiting our money to generate income? That Iran has been fueling the fire that is the mideast? Israel is no help there either. To say they are no enemy of the USA is at best ignorant.
It isn't families that own and run the Federal Reserve you moron. Try researching and looking things up to get the facts before spewing worng information. In fact, it's other large banks that own the Federal Reserve, i.e., Bank of America, Citigroup Bank, Wells Fargo et. al. Wow, are people really this stupid? If so, then America won't have to worry about external enemies. It will be to the upcoming generation that dooms America, due to the lack of education they seem to not have.
Who the hell is ORC International? And why should I trust their poll results?
just wondering what people know about Iran, or N. Korea except for the cnn propaganda, or fox, dunno the difference, same rubbish. So the poll is ok for sure. The next poll will be about ET threat.
I don't know who's a bigger threat our stupid media or this gutless mainstream media that follows Congress (and AIPAC) right off a cliff. Iran is a third-rate power, absolutely no threat. The peoples of the region prefer them to us and our Saudia Arabian allies. Maybe CNN and other media here should do a little homework, before sounding the drums for war. Sounds like 2003 all over again!
Seriously? A few months ago Iran talked about sending warships to patrol off the Gulf of Mexico as retaliation for our carriers practicing war drills near them. The US pretty much laughed at them. Iran can't hold a candle against the US in terms of naval or air power. In relationships between the two, it was the US who overthrew their government in 1953. The US supplied weapons to Saddam Hussein when Iran and Iraq were at war. Not to mention I would take what Panetta says with a few thousand grains of salt. This is the guy who basically said that for the US to intervene in Syria, there would have to be international support from the UN and the Arab League and that the administration would "think" about notifying congress.
The real threat to the US are the fools that we elect to Congress and the White House.
iran is the real satan....... i dont understand how the rest of the civilized world is afraid to confront this....
Perhaps because not everyone's not quite as dumb as you?
Nice! What a bloody embarrassing typo.
Iran is Israel's problem and the Saudi's problem. North Korea is China's problem if they want their bond money back.
The Islamic regime needed to be erased from the pages of history back in 1979. The problem has only gotten worse since then.
Yawohl, mein douchebag!
Well they may not have had a revolution if the US hadn't overthrown their government in 1953 and installed a brutal dictator. We still haven't learned the term "blowback."
None of this country are threat to us,that is the media they tell us we people listen.
The US is the biggest threat to Iran.
Consistent War Mongering and propaganda over a long period of time influences general popular opinion of propaganda target!!!
We are our own worst enemy. Partisan politics is the most dangerous threat to the world.
What a stupid stupid poll. Why do we even bother paying the CIA? We can just use CNN to poll the American public what they think the threats to our nation are. Last time I checked, American's perceptions of who is a threat has nothing to do with who actually is a threat.
Breaking CNN poll! 53% of Americans fear the upcoming zombie apocalypse more than North Korea, therefore zombies are a bigger threat to America than North Korea!
The only threat to America is Chuck Norris ... He could single handedly take on any country.. Wake up people..
"does not behave according to international rules, is engaged in spreading terrorism, in destabilizing countries in that part of the world"
So two Wars (Iraq and Afghanistan), countless CIA covert operations and Installing dictators has nothing to do with this. CNN is becoming a terrible "news" agency that just repeats what ever the government tells them
Who is the "government"? I doubt anyone would say the current administration are warmongers.
the secretary of defense of United States of America is the who said the phrase that i quoted
Of course, what the American public feels about this matter has no bearing on reality (myself included). We read the news about Iran and North Korea, but that doesn't make a qualified to make an educated guess. We "know" what we are told.
iran is the only threat that will come to fruition if not stoped in the near future.
the biggest threat is the united states and Israel to the world
There I fixed this sentence from the article:
The CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday showed 81% view their lack of foreign policy knowledge a very serious or moderate threat to the U.S. Three quarters of Americans said their childlike fears of economically unstable governments represent a similar threat and often hide under their beds at night sucking their thumbs while wetting themselves.
yeah, let's poll people, that's a good way to figure out how to handle international relations.
holy hell, why do so many of my fellow countrymen fail to realize that NO ONE is really threatening you. It's all spin.
when they come to take your freedoms, they'll be wearing 5,000 dollar suits and uniforms. and they won't be foreigners. WAKE UP
You have a point about some of the real threats to our freedom. However, Iran has spoken belligerently about the US for 30 years now and has defied numerous well-respected international conventions, including twice threatening embassies (US embassy occupation in 1979 and Britain last year.) They don't have respect for internationally accepted norms and that's where they are really scary.
No powerful countries respects so called "international norms", the US still hasn't paid the compensation required of them by the ICC for planting mines in Nicaragua
White Law makers dont need to be in everyones business. thats the problem White Law Makers force this on the American People and We suffer the Losses of brothers and sons and daughters father and mothers, 30 years of not wanting america in there land Im with that come in my yard and I will blast u as well fuck this Government and the previous ones. We stand back and leave them alone, watch our own lands better.
Hey Hans,....the USA isn't a signatory of the ICC and not even a member of it. It's why when people cry fowl and say why doesn't the ICC bring this American citizen to trial for war crimes etc. Because of the aforemention sentence. In the USA constitution it states that No Other Law can supercide Federal Constitutional Law. It's why when something occurs overseas the USA govt will charge and provide a trial at home and not where the subsequent incident occurred. Therefore, the USA doesnt recognize the ICC, Interpol or any other law or courts.
Certainly it should be no surprise that the people in the US believe that Iran is a threat. This simply points out how effective the Main media has done it's job in twisting peoples minds. For example: The main media has repeated over and over again that "the west suspects Iran is building a bomb". Despite the fact that the best US intelligence has stated that it believes Iran stopped it's nuclear bomb program several years ago. Even Obama has said that he believes that Iran is not building a bomb and yet the main media keeps repeating the same mistakes it made with Iraq and it's weapons of mass destruction.
Why was everyone surprised that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction? Madeline Albright had said on Sixty Minutes ....."before" the last gulf war that "it wasn;t so much that she believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction but that they might wish to build them" . And so why was everyone surprised when none were found.?
It is because the main media had not asked the right questions and instead kept pronouncing that Iraq had them.
And so the same twisted version of reality is being played out again with Iran and inflicting huge damage to the Iranian people and to their livelihood. This will cause nothing but revenge and hate and lead to blow back of some sort or another down the line.
The IAEA just visited Iran for inspections, since Iran is a signatory of the NPT. And per the IAEA report it stipulated that there;s strong enough evidence that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program. As well as the other concerns were the concentrate of enrichment since it's a bit above 20% enriched and no need to higher than 18%. Anything high is for weapons grade purposes. Also, IAEA was denied access to 2 locations. And then why would these 2 locations need to be under ground and why not permit the inspections. In which Iran must allow inspections due to beinig a member of the NPT act of the U.N.
You might want to be better informed and more updated. The comments you used where said over a year ago and you neglected to reveal the entire comment. Not disclosing all of the comment isn't right. Whereas, the last IAEA inspection in Iran was less than 4 months ago.
Biggest threat in region is USA and Israel, they are one that have been destabilizing governments for past 60 years.
The American public has been pounded with the false mantra that Iran is only "few months away" from having the bomb for the past ten years.
None of the US's 17 different intelligence agencies have any evidence that corroborates that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon.
WAKE UP PEOPLE.
How do you know? What am I saying ... of course you don't know. You don't know anything. You just talk.
no, that's what you are doing. The information the above poster stated can be found and corroborated on wikileaks, among other sources. .
Well, we know because we haven't been hiding under a rock, like you apparently have been doing.
For sheer sartorial splendor, Kim is heads above the disheveled Mahmoud. Gotta be Hugo Boss – nobody does dictators and repression quite like them. Just ask the Nazis.
yeah, i'll give you that... but ghadafi on the other hand... that guy had pinache'
i mean, who wears a cape to a cnn interview? or anywhere, for that matter?
If romney becomes POTUS and get's us into another war somewhere, let him and his sons lead the charge!
Maybe the Americans shouldn't have overthrown Iran's democratically elected government in the first place.
Um ... what democratically elected government?
The democratically elected government Iran had before 1953 when the US agreed to help Britain overthrow the Iranian government. The British decided that the Iranian government had to be overthrown because they decided to nationalize their oil, and the US agreed.
Are the fools who believe that Iran is a nuclear threat the same fools who believed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction?
They never learn. Or send their own kids into battle.
The most dangerous country in the world is the United States of America...we are the ones instigating and provoking the world since the the early 1950's. We killed more innocent civillians than anyone else had in history ...yet Americans are too oblivious to realize that we are to blame for everything that is happening in the middle east and Afghanistan. We started everything.
By the way, don't reply to my post with ignorance and denial. Educate yourselves first before making comments and forming an opinion.
Killed more innocent civilians than any one else in history? How about a "" on that.
Seriously. Not saying the government hasn't had its share of "evil deeds" through our 200+ years as a country, but that's a mighty big claim in the face of things like, say, the genocides of the early to mid 20th century.
Like the genocide of Native Americans?
I counted that in the evils, Wharfrat. I'm quite well aware of our history in that (and no, I don't excuse it in the least), but I think the sheer numbers are still greater during the mid 20th in Europe and Asia than they were during the Western Expansion period.
Like the genocide of one million Vietnamese and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi & Afghani civilians?
Hey Bert, I think you've demonstrated the ignorance thing fairly well.
Bleat, sheep, bleat.
Perhaps you are the one who is in need of education if you believe we interact with the international community in the same way as we did in 1950-1993. Once we finally leave the hell-hole of Afghanistan we will be too busy dealing with our own financial ruin. If you are so sick of America, don't worry, we will soon be too poor to do much of anything. Just look at the 20-30 population. We have no future.
I am aleady starving and on the brink of financial collapse!!! No one to help.. worked over 30 years.. good lord, what happend to my middle class existence? Did it dry up like the creeeks in the summer?? Was it an illusion? I sahll the consider the answer, but no where does it look bright.
Yes, USA also is starving the North Koreans!!
No, North Korea is starving the North Koreans.
wE ARE DANGEROUS, but not in the way that you may realize. We determine other countries future through manipulations of economies and offering military defense of those countries that serve and align with our national businesses and political interests. Our corporations are Us, and we are them. Our interests are mostly business related and political. We want oil and we want democracy. Our corporations exploit the oil and our government promotes democracy. I think our corporate interests from private companies are often not our best public relations. Thye tarnish our imagine overseas by devastating other countries environment and waging war and killing people, Innocent people. We need tor realize that our corporations are not serving our countries interests by damaging our reputation abroad. They ahdve too much power and by damaging growing democracies abroad, they threaten our future by angering those whom we want to be friends with. I think that we need to look at the corporations as a Threat to our Democracy!!
I don't believe Iran is a greater threat than north korea. The Iranians are smarter then the north koreans to do anything stupid! North korea is ruled by a very unstable leadership trying to spread it's wings. I feel they are the greater danger. Think about how many times north korea has threatened war with the U.S.
if they cant even get a rocket up, they are not a threat.
NO rocket = No threat!!
The results of this poll demonstrates one plain and simple fact: The #1 threat to America is AIPAC.
Who is AIPAC?
Religion of Peace.. How could Iran possibly be a threat? *rolls eyes*
Really, how is either country a real threat? While North Korea has the ability to basically wipe out South Korea, and Iran has the ability to do the same to Israel, neither country has either the ability nor desire to launch any kind of significant attack on the Unites States. Even if you view an attack on an ally (Israel and SK are two of the US' strongest allies), neither country has any real incentive to launch an attack on SK or Israel. The probability for US counterattack would be way too high, and both countries would be easily defeated because of the US's vastly superior military ability. Beyond that, what do either of these countries stand to gain from an attack on either the US, Israel, or South Korea. Whatever benefit that they could receive from such an attack could never justify the risks that such an attack would pose.
actually, to modify my statement, Iran probably doesn't even have the ability to threaten Israel on its own, given Israel's nuclear stockpile (which most experts conclude is probably very formidable) and Israel's highly effective and well proven military
The threat is that both Iran and North Korea are run by lunatics, and lunatics are capable of anything. They may or may not launch a direct attack on the US, but if they attack our allies, we will probably have to get involved, and if either country has the ability to launch a nuclear attack against us...
but if they were such lunatics capable of doing anything, wouldn't they have done something crazy by now? Both Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-Il were smart enough to keep themselves in power of large, unruly countries, and made sure to not do anything that would compromise their power. They are/were much smarter and more rational than we give them credit for, and it is very unlikely that a strike on Iran or South Korea would have happened unless these leaders believed that such an attack was absolutely vital for maintaining the sovereignty of their own countries and keeping themselves in power.
BINGO!!! CORRECT! Billyboy is right... it is soo obvious.
OK... billy... But we have to cut our military budget RIGHT Now...
In 2001, military budget = $270 billion.....
IN 2011, military budget = $738 billion:
Over 250% in 11 years. Totally Unacceptable. Like Drunk sailors spending all their money at a game of cards and women. WE don't want it.... Hear Me, boy!
It's just like Iraq under Sadaam only with way more attitude. Should have been dealt with (ie...regime change) during the Gulf War when they were weak from 8 years of war with Iraq ..but no...that would have been too easy and pissed off the coalition. Now....they will be dealt with but it will be very messy and costly. Start buying oil futures so that you can profit along with the Bilderberg shills and their proxies.
Buy Greene Energy Futures so that we don't have to pay them for any more Oil... Gott it, slick??
In 1953, America overthrow Iran's democratic government and installed a brutal dictator Shah. During Iran-Iraq war America supported Saddam and killed over million of Iranian people.
Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian jet airliner shot down by U.S. missiles on July 3, 1988, over the Strait of Hormuz, , it was destroyed by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49) killing all of its 290 passengers and crew.
In 2003, America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and displaced 4,000,000+ Iraqi.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 24 trillion by 2015.
Do you have to remind us of what our terribel leaders ahve done in the past 3 yearss? And I'm not taling about Obama here. It's the Republican obstructionists, Stupid!
And now North Korea is threatening to wage a "holy war" against South Korea. Since when have the Commies in the North ever believed in anything "holy?"
The Kims ARE gods, dummy!
Actually it's Iran that fears the USA. In 1941 England invaded Iran (said they were to chummy with the Nazi's) and both USA and England occupied Iran during World war 2. In 1953 Iran took back their oil from England and the USA launched operation "Ajax". This was the first time the USA overthrew a democratically elected government. The USA put the Shah in power and after he was overthrown by the people, the USA imposed sanctions. After Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in 1980 the Iranians started winning so the USA jumped in and provided Iraq with Arms, intel, and advisors. Due to the harsh sanctions, Iran is a 3rd world military. The USA meanwhile is not only the largest, most potent military in the world, they also export the most arms of any country. No wonder Iran wants Nukes!
BRAVO!! AND B INGO!! You hit the nail on the head..
The biggest question is, which country has an uglier leader?
I say Iran....
who cares? i'm one of the ugliest people in the world. but i'm still a good guy. i'm a midget and have elephantiasis.
"Americans see Iran as a bigger threat to the United States than North Korea, according to a new poll." Of course they do. The jewish controlled media has been saturating us with propaganda for years now. What else would Americans believe?
You severely underestimate the America people; not everyone is as ignorant and conspiracy-prone as you.
Yup... exceelent point!! You a re correct.
Oh swell, now that you've labled someone else a bigger threat than NK, what is NK doing to do to get back to #1?
Starve even more of its populace?
Morbidly obese half-wits and their insatiable appetites for meds and HFCS are a far bigger threat to America than those 2 shit holes combined.
Iran is a bigger threat to the US than North Korea.
Obama is a bigger threat to the US than Iran.
Tell that to Bin laden's widows.
Bin laden is laughing at u stupid if he was real would we have seen more then film on this dude
Are you crazy?
you republican criminal's are the biggest threat to our country that we have ever had!!!!! just look at the record 100,000 Iraqi's dead 7000 Americans dead and 20,000 wounded for the war that was a lie!!!!!!+trillions of dollars wasted DEREGULATION OF WALL ST. DEREGULATION OF BANKS SHALL I GO ON?????
Funny how you fail to mention that all of that happened with a congress and senate controlled by the demoncrats, i.e., nazi pelosi and her puppets reid and frank. Those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Good point. But I don't agree because I am a Dem ...
And the US is a bigger threat than both of those combined.
And Israel is an even bigger threat than the U.S.
And Extra Terrestrials are a bigger threat than Israel.
North Korea sits on a rock. Iran sits on or is surrounded by nations with most of the world 's oil reserves. Polls mean nothing...Half of Americans think God wrote the Bible. The other half don't speak English so well!
Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?
I love it.
The FBI had found that a former Mossad chief illegally collaborated with AIPAC, to influnce American politics on israels behalf.
Israel is much more dangerous to world stability, than is Iran.
We need to take a firm stance against Israeli manuevering.
You know the drill.. Israel's lobbyists don't lobby and even if they did they don't have any effect whatsoever, though Israel keeps paying for them.
Yup... thousands of them get paid. Kinda like being on welfare, if ya ask. me.
