CNN Poll: Iran a bigger threat to U.S. than North Korea

Americans see Iran as a bigger threat to the United States than North Korea, according to a new poll.
The CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday showed 81% view Iran as a very serious or moderate threat to the U.S. Three quarters of Americans said North Korea represents a similar threat.
The secretary of defense has said that Iran is viewed as a more significant threat because if it obtained nuclear weapons the country would destabilize the entire region.
“Iran is a country that is – does not behave according to international rules, is engaged in spreading terrorism, in destabilizing countries in that part of the world, and a country that operates on that basis becomes extremely dangerous if it obtains a nuclear weapon,” Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said last March at a press conference.
The new poll found a small majority were hopeful the situation with the Asian country could be resolved with economic and diplomatic efforts. However, if those efforts fail, nearly six in ten would oppose U.S. military action against North Korea.
The isolationist North Korea attempted to launch a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea.
Just over half of respondents thought Syria was a serious or moderate threat to this country. But most Americans did not view Russia the same way, with a majority saying the country is just a slight threat to the U.S. or no threat at all.
The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International between April 13 and April 15, with 1,015 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error was plus or minus three percentage points.

Iran hasn't broken the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. They continue to adhere to the lowest level of the letter of the law, no more, but they do adhere to it strictly. That is a fact. What the USA and Europe want is for Iran to go under a higher monitoring protocol with added oversight and additional people on the ground that isn't mandated in the treaty. Iran had agreed to this previously but stopped because the West keeps ratcheting up sanctions and gives them no reason to go through with the additional steps. The West has tried to play all gunboat diplomacy with their big stick against Iran and these are a very proud, very nationalistic people who told the USA and other Western countries to go screw. This gunboat diplomacy goes back decades, back at least to when the CIA got the Shah back on the throne of Iran after a popular revolution kicked him out in the early 50's. What the USA needs to do is stop treating Iran like a bunch of savages and like a large, technologically advanced nation. Make Iran a fair and reasonable offer that profits both sides like normalization of relations and trade for the highest monitoring level of all their nuclear activities.

The country that's constantly being harassed and interfered with and which doesn't have nuclear weapons is the "threat"?? World considers US, Israel threat not Iran: Chomsky
American scholar Noam Chomsky says the world does not accept the US portrayal of Iran as an “imminent threat” to global peace, and that Washington and Tel Aviv are instead seen as greater evils.
“There is little credible discussion of just what constitutes the Iranian threat, though we do have an authoritative answer, provided by US military and intelligence. Their presentations to Congress make it clear that Iran doesn’t pose a military threat,” Chomsky wrote in his latest article titled “What Are Iran’s Intensions?” published Friday.
Chomsky added that even "the majority of Americans" recognized Iran’s right to its nuclear energy program before Washington officials and media launched a “massive propaganda onslaught” against the Islamic Republic over the past two years.
He added that presently powerful countries like Russia, China, India, and 120 member nations of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) oppose the US policy on Iran.
“Western commentary has made much of how the Arab dictators allegedly support the US position on Iran, while ignoring the fact that the vast majority of the population opposes it-a stance too revealing to require comment,” he said.
Instead, Chomsky said, “Europeans regard Israel as the greatest threat to world peace,” and in the Arab world he added, “Israel and the US are regarded as the pre-eminent threat.”
The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program and have used this pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic and to call for a military strike against Tehran.
Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Israel, which is widely believed to be the sole possessor of a nuclear arsenal in the Middle East with over 200 undeclared nuclear warheads, pursues the policy of "deliberate ambiguity" on its nuclear program.

A new, comprehensive poll illuminates Arabs' opinions on democracy, corruption, Palestine/Israel, and the US.
The first of its kind – a poll conducted in 12 Arab countries, representing 84 per cent of the population of the Arab world, in an attempt to gauge the region's political mood – has arrived at some interesting results.
Organised by the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), face-to-face interviews by Arab surveyors with 16,731 individuals in the first half of 2011 revealed majority support for the goals of the Arab revolutions and notably, for a democratic system of government.

Years and years ago, when I was in a boarding school, I had an Iranian room mate who shall go unnamed. Actually, reports say that China is still 20 years behind in terms of military technology, though yes they do have the largest standing army in the world. With the newly estimated 3,000 miles of tunnels reported to be found after an earthquake which for some reason thousands of radiation inspectors were called upon afterwards, it was estimated that China has possibly up to 3,000 nuclear weapons. Yes, China is developing their own military technology, but they still buy 5th-gen. equipment off Russia, so no, they don't have superior military technology.

The poll either was conducted among a group of people who are very pro-war, or Americans in general are rather clueless. Iran does not possess a nuclear weapon. Its leaders state that possessing nuclear weapons is in violation of the Q'ran. North Korea does have nuclear weapons, its leadership has no religons qualms about having and prrobably using them, and despite the recent faiure of its attempts to launch a satellite it does have long range missiles which presmably could deliver a nuclear strike againstthe U.S.
An Iranian ship delivered North Korean Nukes to Syria last month. They are to be smuggled into Israel.
Apparently critical thinking isn't your forte. N. Korea doenst have long range missles. And a Missle and Rocket is essentially the samething, except that rockets are capable of traveling at a faster velocity. The technology is the same for both platforms. As well as, there isn't any religion in N.Korea and if any particular religion is practice, then it's conducted underground and not in plain view.
As for Iran's nuclear ambitions, they do posses a huge threat to the entire world. Roughly 60% of the world's oil goes threw the Straight of Hormez. And Iran could cause issues there. Iran also, has made more then enough threats to several nations. And probably the biggest is that Iran has already enriched Uranium to just over 20%. And there's no need to go over 18% unless your goal is to enrich up to 93%. Once you hit the 93 mark you have a full weapons grade munition. For medical purpose you only have to enrich from 15% to 18% and for energy purpose only need to enrich from 3% to 5%. Iran will use the bomb as a threat tactic to get what it wants...we have already seen this tactic with N.Korea. Also Iran is so religious that their top 4 mullahs (leaders) believe that once the infidel is eradicated that the 12th Imam (and supposedly missing) will arise to be the last caliphate to rule the world in peace and under sharia/islamic jurisprudence. Then you have the issue of Iran giving the terrorist organizations they support giving them the blueprints in how to make a nuclear weapon. More than likely, would provide the materials and know how in how to build it efficently. Then you'll also have a nuclear arms race in that region. And we don't need an already unstable region being in possesson of these weapons and sitting ontop ot the worlds largest oil reserves to hold the world hostage per se.

The average American can't name the US States bordering their own, doesn't know the names of their Senators, and most couldn't find North Korea or Iran on a map to save their lives.

Seriously? A few months ago Iran talked about sending warships to patrol off the Gulf of Mexico as retaliation for our carriers practicing war drills near them. The US pretty much laughed at them. Iran can't hold a candle against the US in terms of naval or air power. In relationships between the two, it was the US who overthrew their government in 1953. The US supplied weapons to Saddam Hussein when Iran and Iraq were at war. Not to mention I would take what Panetta says with a few thousand grains of salt. This is the guy who basically said that for the US to intervene in Syria, there would have to be international support from the UN and the Arab League and that the administration would "think" about notifying congress.

It's why when people cry fowl and say why doesn't the ICC bring this American citizen to trial for war crimes etc. Because of the aforemention sentence. In the USA constitution it states that No Other Law can supercide Federal Constitutional Law. It's why when something occurs overseas the USA govt will charge and provide a trial at home and not where the subsequent incident occurred. Also, IAEA was denied access to 2 locations. And then why would these 2 locations need to be under ground and why not permit the inspections. In which Iran must allow inspections due to beinig a member of the NPT act of the U.N.

Really, how is either country a real threat? While North Korea has the ability to basically wipe out South Korea, and Iran has the ability to do the same to Israel, neither country has either the ability nor desire to launch any kind of significant attack on the Unites States. Even if you view an attack on an ally (Israel and SK are two of the US' strongest allies), neither country has any real incentive to launch an attack on SK or Israel. The probability for US counterattack would be way too high, and both countries would be easily defeated because of the US's vastly superior military ability. Beyond that, what do either of these countries stand to gain from an attack on either the US, Israel, or South Korea. Whatever benefit that they could receive from such an attack could never justify the risks that such an attack would pose.
actually, to modify my statement, Iran probably doesn't even have the ability to threaten Israel on its own, given Israel's nuclear stockpile (which most experts conclude is probably very formidable) and Israel's highly effective and well proven military

They may or may not launch a direct attack on the US, but if they attack our allies, we will probably have to get involved, and if either country has the ability to launch a nuclear attack against us...
