U.S. investigators visit Afghan shooting site

By Barbara Starr

Army criminal investigators have now completed their first visit to the outpost where Staff Sgt. Robert Bales served and the two villages where he is alleged to have killed 17 Afghan civilians, according to a US official.

The official declined to be identified or discuss what evidence had been gathered due to the sensitivity of the investigation. The Army will also not say when investigators were there or if they are going back, due to concerns over their safety in the vicinity of the villages.

It was the first visit by U.S. investigators, who had been staying away out of respect to angry villagers.  CNN's Nic Paton Walsh reported last week that the American investigators had not been able to return to the crime scene.

Until now the Army has been relying on evidence collected by Afghan officials at the two villages. American investigators hoped to dig out of walls whatever bullets are left and examine the trajectories of bullets fired, CNN reported earlier this week.

The attorney for Bales has questioned how solid the evidence against his client is.

"There's no forensic evidence. There's no confessions," attorney John Henry Browne said on March 23.

There are now more than two dozen Army criminal investigation agents working on the case in the United States, Afghanistan and other locations "globally," according to Chris Grey, chief of public affairs for the Army's Criminal Investigation Command (CID).  Grey said if leads indicate a need to talk to other service members who may have known Bales or who came in contact with him, and pursuing those leads requires travel to other countries, then that is being done.

All evidence gathered by the U.S. in the case is being processed at the Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory at Fort Gillem, Georgia, according to Grey. The Georgia facility is the only full-service forensic laboratory in the U.S. military. Grey would not say whether evidence collected by Afghan authorities has been turned over to U.S. officials.

Letting Bales take all the responsibility for the killing of these innocents would be like having all the members of the Nazi hierarchy in your hands and allowing them to go free while making some insignificant Sargent in one of the concentration camps face capitol murder charges for killing 17 inmates in one of those camps. If there is any real blame, and there is certainly more than enough of it to go around, it goes to the International Military Industrial Complex which profits from and feeds upon all the carnage of one endless war after another. For all intents and purposes our Armed Forces are filled with the same population of disenfranchised poor youth as AlQueda and the Taliban are. Each believing, in their own way, they are fighting a war guided by some nebulous God who is greater than the God of Evil incarnate which they believe is the enemy of all that is Holy.

I remember far worse acts than Bales is accused of which were committed during the Vietnamese War and which resulted in nothing but House Arrest and a discharge for the soldiers who were involved. Meanwhile, those politicians and corporate heads of weapons industries who were really responsible for the actual War taking place were never held accountable. And as callous as it may sound, the death of 17 innocents including 9 children, is hardly a drop in the sea of devastation this country has inflicted upon Iraq and Afghanistan with the use of depleted uranium. A weapon whose victims lives are destined to be destroyed till virtually the end of time because that is how long the effects of that Weapon of Mass Destruction will lasts.

So before you go washing your hands of and throwing Bales under the train as being fully culpable of committing what are obvious atrocities so YOU can feel righteous and exonerated while just watching war footage on TV and after he had what appears to be 3 relatively uneventful tours killing who he was ordered to kill before he was destined to simply go psychotic; take a look at this link below and then ask yourself if Bales, whose life is for all intents and purposes now over, wasn't fighting all along on the wrong side...just like ALL the Armed Forces of the World are. Just so each of us can all feel free to not ask ourselves all that we are doing and not doing...to allow it to go on and on and...

CNN wont allow the link to be posted so just do a Google for "depleted uranium baby images". WARNING THE RESULTS OF OUR WEAPONRY IS GRAFFIC AND NOT FOR THOSE WITH THE SENSITIVITIES OF A GROSSLY HYPOCRITICAL BARBRA WALTERS WHO TOLD CHENEY WHEN HE WAS ON "THE VIEW", "THANK YOU FOR YOUR COURAGE TO COME ON THE SHOW."

I can't believe what I'm reading here and you wonder why other countries don't respect us. You walk around complaining about the miniscule amount of foreign aid we provide and complain about other countries not bowing to our every demand as if they are obligated to us. Has it ever dawned on you that other peoples don't respect us because we have taken advantage of them and then they read the kind of ignorant comments you've written. Praising killers and accusing everyone of being Taliban is just outright ignorance, This same kind of ignorance has been demonstrated in comments on the recent Florida case where a young man was killed walking home and the sentencing of the New Orleans cops. How can you defend murder of innocent people? I get it–they're not like you but, all people have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness regardless of how different they are from you. The kind of thinking I see in many of the comments is the same kind of thinking you find in neo-nazi groups and the KKK. It's not what the United States claims to stand for but it's all too common. The soldiers who carried out these murders, the cops in New Orleans who shot down innocent citizens and the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed the young man walking home have all done irreparable damage to the causes and missions they claim to defend. I thought we were better than this but, it appears senseless killing has a lot of support among the lesser of us. Beware, your kid with the crazy hair, tattoos, baggy pants or junker first car could be next.

When i see post like this, it really shows the mentality of the majority of the Americans. After post like this don't even think that the world will believe that there's only a few Americans like this killer. You are shooting yourself in the foot, but it's a good thing, it's always best that we found out about the real side of you people right from the start instead of later. I feel sorry for you people because one day when time will come that you will need a hand, you will find no one the lend that hand to you.

Really? How do you know all those posting here are Americans? People like to post here claiming to be American and are from another country. Has that thought ever crossed your mind?

Your answer are typical to Americans, always into denying. I happened to being born right next to US boarders and i know the mentality. It's very easy to pick up a post made by Americans. There are no other places in the world in which people respond in the same manners you people do. The quick denying thing are like a trademark for you, just like an ID recognition system you have on yourselves.

Your comment slanders all the decent and honorable men and women who put on the uniform of their country's armed forces for relatively little pay and often lousy working conditions just so they can defend, to the death if need be, your right to make such asinine statements.

Boo-fucking-hoo for them. They chose, of their own free will, to join their respective nations armed forces, despite the fact that it could put them in harms way. They weren't drafted against their will, or forced. They volunteered. Nobody owes them shit.

Not sure what the the Army CID is investigating. There were no bodies found. What evidence do the people from the village have? The dead they are talking about are the taliban wimps!! They are looking for money and it worked because the leader of this great country paid the villagers thousands of $$$$!! There goes more of my money out the window!!!

Make sure you go to church on Sunday , so that you can be the Hypocrite that you are.. If you don't think this is the greatest country and people that care in the world , then stay in Kansas Dorothy , and remember the constitution protects everyone , even the ignorant.

Alive they are Taliban & Insurgents – dead they are innocents.

Bovine Feces. This is the same BS we faced in Viet Nam. By day 'innocent civilians' by night attacking Viet Cong.

Afghanistan is a country of imbeciles. Unfortunately those imbeciles have weapons and love to die. The US and NATO should leave and allow Afghan's to continue their tradition of oppressing women and killing one another....

The afghan tribes were old before civilitation even existed.

They are industrious, and the only country to fore Russia to withdraw from a land war.

Alexander couldn't conquer them. What chance did we have??

I suggest we pull out NOW, We need to secure the atomic weapons in the region or destroy where they are. We want to do that with Iran. It is time to let the Criminal Governments in the region defend themselves, without shedding any more American Blood. Have we forgotten that over 2/3's of the 911 hijackers were Saudi nationals, did we bomb Saudi Arabia, of course not they own us. Pakistan hid Bin Laden, why to we protect this people, and pay them to let us to do it. Maybe a couple of well placed Nuke strikes after we get out will calm their delusions.

And Sam if 8 counties were trying to destroy you would you want to fight back. I wish the CIA was as efficient as the Mosad. All we have are the Seals and they have done a tremendous Job.
