U.S. moving minesweepers to waters near Iran

Four Navy minesweepers will be on their way to the Persian Gulf within weeks as part of an effort to boost American military capability in the region amid rising tensions with Iran, a Navy official says.
The minesweepers will be loaded onto cargo ships leaving the United States in late April, according to the Navy official.
The deployments were publicly confirmed by Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, earlier this month in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
"We are moving four more mine sweeps to the theater," he said. "That'll make eight. We are moving airborne mine countermeasure helicopters. That'll take us to eight in theater. And ... those, working with the British mine sweeps there, which we exercise with frequently, sets us up a little bit there."
Each of the ships - the USS Sentry (MCM 3), USS Devastator (MCM 6), USS Pioneer (MCM 9) and USS Warrior (MCM 10) - carries a crew of about 60. All are equipped to detect and neutralize mines.
The Navy this month also sent to the region four additional MH-53 Sea Dragon helicopters, which also have the capability to locate and destroy mines.
The additional deployments are part of an effort by Gen. James Mattis, head of the U.S. Central Command, to beef up the American military presence in the region in the face of Iranian threats to shut down the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States has long believed that if Iran tried to shut the strait down it would begin by seeding the waters with mines, which would keep both commercial and military shipping from operating. The Navy is increasingly concerned about Iran's use of undersea mines, which may be tethered to the sea floor and are difficult to detect.
New detection and destruction technologies including lasers are being developed but have yet to be deployed.
So far, Mattis has not requested additional aircraft carrier deployments, but several military officials say the effort is to keep two carrier groups in the region as much as possible. None of the officials would speak on the record due the sensitivity of discussing military deployments to the region.
The Navy is also finishing up refitting the USS Ponce (LPD-15) as a floating staging base. It's expected to also be sent to the region in the next few months, manned by a military and civilian crew. It will provide refueling, resupply and maintenance operations for minesweepers, aircraft and patrol craft at sea in the region.

Lee, the United States doesn't currently use conscription (the draft)... it's been a volunteer military since after Vietnam. "Draft-dodging" simply isn't an issue in contemporary American politics.

Granted, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the seapower of the United States, but you're seriously underestimating the reality of the situation. Tehran has been aquiring new weapons systems from China, Russia, and Iran. In fact, the Iranian Navy allegedly possesses 3 Russian-built Kilo-class submarines, in addition to producing their own (of which they allegedly have dozens, although this may include small underwater vessels). They also have several frigates and corvettes, as well as a significant number oif aircraft. The Revolutionary Guard fleet is composed of over 40 offensive ships, not counting smaller patrol boats and zodiacs. They also have a number of coastal anti-ship missile batteries in place. They won't be contending with major naval powers any time soon, but your assessment of the situation doesn't reflect the facts...

So you see, an effective attack would last days or perhaps weeks and that would result is a wide spread war. Iran would lose in the long run fighting against the US, but it would be a deadly and costly war! So let's hope a compromise is struck through peaceful means!

I don't necessarily agree. However, I think we can fight this way sensibly. The way we do it is by introducing the Iranians to thermonuclear weapons on their own soil. If they are so hell-bent on acquiring such weapons, then lets just give it to them now. Lets turn Tehran radioactive. I say launch enough missiles to effectively make Iran as a country glow in the dark. Do it! It makes perfect sense in this day and age when our government is attempting to reduce costs. We have a huge arsenal... might as well use it. What is there to lose? A bunch of muslims running around chanting "death to america" and "death to israel?" This is not about conquest. If we wanted to conquer Iran we'd have done it already. The Iranian government keeps threatening to shut the waterway, so various other Navies are putting assets in place to ensure that the waterway remains open. If there is confrontation, it will be because the Iranian government wants confrontation. If that happens, the Iranian military will be defeated and its government replaced.

Stupid... IRAN has medium range missles that should they want to disrupt oil supply they could lob a few into the terminal in Saudi and Kuwait and there is very little to stop them from doing such. Iran has mined those waters several times in the past. We worried about them when I was in the Navy. Back in the 80's and early 90's, the Navy was sweeping Iranian mines, many left over from the Iran-Iraq war, but others seemed to have been deployed long after that conflict.
The US is very good at sweeping mines, and Iran knows it.
Since Iran spends around 1% of what Uncle Sam spends on weapons every year I guess we should be a bit more capable than they are...on the other hand, we've had our butts handed to us in Afghanistan over the last 11 years or so.

Today CNN reported that the US government sanctioned American firms doing business with Iran! Now we see these ships heading into the Gulf with mine sweepers! Well, if you have been paying close attention to President Obama's foreign policy doctrine, then you could come to the conclusion that all this heightened activity is not a sign of an impeding war but a way to up the pressure on Iran to relinquish its nuiclear program! I applaud President Obama's foreign policy because as was the case in Libya, he followed all the necessary stept to bring about peace without more bloodshed. During the Libyan crisis, President Obama pleaded with Colonel Ghadaffi to listen to the wishes of his people and step down but he refused and he caused his own demise.
While I fully support Iran's right to seek and develop a nuclear program for peaceful means, the West has already came to the conclusion that Iran cannot be trusted and it will not allow Iran to have its way! And even if Iran is not lying about its nuclear ambitions, this is a campaign it will never win! Therefore, just I hope for the sake of peace and for the sake of the Iranian people, the Iranian government would realize this and make a decision on their nuclear ambitions. And if Iran was to give up its nuclear ambitions, I would suppose it would get alot of respect and accomodation from the international community, especially after being labeled as a major supplier and supporter of global terrorism! Furthermore, what the earthquake/Sunami desaster in Japan has shown is there is no safe haven when you have nuclear plants in your country and natural desasters strike! And I believe Japan would have been better off if it has no nuclear plants!

The constitution said if you're going to commit ground troops to support a major war campaign, you have to seek the War Powers Act to do so! What is said is you have to notify congress in writing two (2) weeks in advance of such campaign.! And President Obama did so three times to congress but as usual, the GOP playing political hardball, accused the President of rushing to war! And what is even more outrageous about the GOP's behavior is that for two months into the Libyan crisis they and their rightwing media attacked and accused the President of "dragging his feet and doing nothing to help the people of Libya who were being attacked by the Ghadaffi regime," only to flip flop and then accuse the President of rushing to war! And that is after supporting a legitimate UN mandated mission to protect the people of Libya! here is what is going on. you are a little off. Iran has not DECIDED to build a bomb. They are, in fact, NOT going to stop enriching uranium. You need to understand one VERY important key to make a nuke, almost anyone with a mechanic background could build a nuke, the URANIUM is the hard part. The bomb is a pretty simple device, you create a barrel (like a tanks barrel) then pack a charge in one side. you explode that charge shooting one piece of Uranium into the other and boom, a city is GONE. yes, there are specifics that my example is missing, but all that can be found on the darn web. What Iran is doing is preparing to be able to make the uranium needed to make a nuke. As far an i am concerned, and hopefully you and everyone else should be too, is that they do not have a shoot at enriching uranium to that level OR EVEN CLOSE TO IT. Sorry, but they cannot have a nuke, and anyone who thinks "just let them be" is stupid and lost.

I happen to speak fluently Farsi (or Persian), Arabic, and French. I have been to Iran (I was right in front of the US Embassy while the US hostages were lingering there). I have been to Egypt, Israel, Palestine, and Turkey. And I know what the heck I am talking about. You have been brain washed by the media, which cites only America's intervention in Iran's internal affairs while supporting the Shah in the 50's, 60', and 70's. The Carter administration dumped the Shah when it feared a possible communist infiltration in Iran. It has only paid lip service to the Iran people's desire for freedom and individual liberties. Once he announced we were leaving Iraq and then Afghanistan, the attacks stepped up against our soldiers. I thought he promised in all those campaign speeches he was ending war, yet we're still in Afghanistan with less soldiers, so it's more dangerous. Soldiers are doing four and more tours, and then he announces he's making the military smaller, with less money given to them, so how is this going to play out? If we're going to keep going to war, we need someone in the admin that knows what they're doing.

Israel will strike the Iranian nuclear sites some time this year (sooner rather than later) with or without the help of the United States. The U.S. military is preparing for the Iranian's to react to the crippling sanctions in June that will severly affect their economy. Iran will not quietly sit by and let the sanctions create civil unrest within its country. They will provoke Israel or the United States to a confrontation to try and unite their people and allies. The Iranian regime will not have the support of their people if the sanctions result in higher unemployment and a depressing economy. The Iranian regime will either have to comply or confront. They will have to make that decision within 6 months or sooner. My guess is that Israel will not wait 6 months to strike Iran.
I think thats a fairly accurate assessment. Israel has historically suprise attacked quite a few countries without warning and without U.S. cooperation due to fears over nuclear proliferation. This time they will have it. I just wish the whole world could live in peace. This all comes down to religious differences.

I was born in 1948. Israel was attacked by the Arabs with the intent to kill the new nation carved from the Ottoman empire after WW2 when the United Nations created the state. Attacked again in 1967, again in 1973. Your are right that the USA has supported Israel since it was created in 1948. Why? Israel is the only democratic state in the Middle East. It is an unsinkable aircraft carrier just like the UK in WW2. A strategic geographic location that will support the USA at times of need.
