Iran gobbles up U.S. wheat

Iran is buying American wheat for the first time in three years as it seeks to hedge against the growing impact of sanctions and weather-related crop shortages. Some 120,000 tonnes of hard red winter wheat grown in the Plains is on its way to the Islamic Republic, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The sale of another 60,000 tonnes has been finalized, according to trade sources, and Iran may ultimately buy some 400,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat this year.
The purchases are part of a massive effort by the Islamic Republic to build up its grain stockpiles amid growing difficulties in financing imports of everything from steel to palm oil. At the same time, Iranian companies are devising elaborate workarounds to find new markets for crude oil exports.
Exports of U.S. wheat to Iran are legal. U.S. and European sanctions against Iran exempt agricultural products. The major U.S. commodity traders - Bunge, Archer Daniels Midland and Cargill - won't comment on whether they were involved in the deals, but Cargill told CNN that it "does sell agricultural commodities to Iran as food is specifically excluded from the sanctions" implemented because of Iran's nuclear program.
"We take great care to ensure that these sales respect both the spirit and the letter of the law while trying to make sure that ordinary people are not deprived of basic foodstuffs," a Cargill spokeswoman said.
According to USDA figures, 1,564,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat were exported to Iran in 2008, when the country was suffering a drought, and 312,000 tonnes the following year. Iran has also bought smaller amounts of U.S. soybeans and corn.
Once again, analysts say dry weather is in part driving the sales.
"Iran's appetite is driven by drought, a desire to build up grain inventories and hedging against the future impact of sanctions," says Shelley Goldberg, director of global resources and commodities strategy at Roubini Global Economics. "Inventories were getting quite low last year."
State-owned and private Iranian companies are devising ways to overcome the shortage of hard currency, using barter, gold and currencies such as the Indian rupee and Russian rouble. Traders say it also appears that Iran's Central Bank has stepped in, making foreign exchange available to facilitate imports.
Iranian importers are also looking to Pakistan for several hundred thousand tonnes of rice and wheat this year as part of a complex barter deal. Pakistan has a wheat surplus.
A spokesman at Pakistan's Ministry of Water & Power, Tanveer Alam, told CNN Monday that Pakistan was planning to export one million tonnes of wheat in exchange for iron ore and fertilizer.
Such elaborate deals are making up for difficulties with more conventional trade relationships. "Even though wheat and agricultural products are not targeted by sanctions, there is a growing reluctance to do business with Iran. It's a case of bad karma,' says Goldberg.
In recent weeks, several cargoes of grain destined for Iranian ports have been diverted to other countries because of payment problems, according to commodity traders. U.S. and European sanctions against some 30 Iranian banks have produced what financial sources call a "chilling effect" - with banks and currency dealers less willing to provide letters of credit for Iranian imports and exports.
Over the weekend, Iran was further isolated from the global financial system when many of its banks designated by European sanctions were blocked from using SWIFT, the messaging system that supports international bank transfers. Those banks include Mellat, Post, Saderat and Sepah as well as the Iranian Central Bank.
Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz was quoted in Israeli media over the weekend as saying that cutting off SWIFT was a "dramatic step that is liable to bring about the collapse of Iran's economy."
Trading and banking sources contest that view, saying Iran has proved ingenious at circumventing sanctions and mitigating their effect. They said it is by regional standards a diversified and self-reliant economy.
The Islamic Republic is also finding new destinations for its crude oil, although analysts speculate that it often has to sell at a discount to market rates. Shipping sources say Iran is increasing deliveries to Asian customers - especially in China, South Korea and India - as the European Union prepares to ban all imports and Japan diversifies its sources of crude.
The European Union ban comes into effect from July 1. But that ban, agreed in January, might yet be revised to provide Iran a significant loophole.
Originally it covered Iranian crude carried on any ship insured in the European Union. More than 90% of the world's oil tankers are covered through insurance "clubs" in London. But one reinsurance source in London says he expects the proposed sanctions to be diluted when EU foreign ministers meet later this week to exempt ships that are owned outside the European Union even if insured there. This would make it easier to move Iranian crude.
India has lobbied for a revision of the sanctions regime and made it clear that it will only abide by U.N.-mandated measures.
Chinese shippers have already made it clear that they will continue to take Iranian crude and if necessary seek other sources of insurance. About one-fifth of Iran's crude exports go to China. Hong Kong media quoted a senior official of the China Shipping Development Co. as saying Friday that the Chinese government would take measures to ensure the volume of oil imports from Iran would not drop.
Even so, financial sanctions against Iran continue to complicate the country's trade.
In Gulf trading houses, the unofficial value of Iran's rial has declined by half over the past year. Currency exchange firms in the Gulf emirates are reluctant to trade in the rial for fear of being tainted by association with banks sanctioned by the United States and European Union.

Yet another thing to mention is that the majority of digital cameras arrive equipped with a new zoom lens so that more or less of that scene to be included simply by 'zooming' in and out. Life is fragile and uncertain at the best of times. You could easily just drop dead as you are reading this sentence. So you need to figure out what the consequences are if you do die.
If you don't believe in an afterlife, then you have no worries because in your belief system you will simply cease to exist. However, you could be wrong and there actually is an afterlife.
So if you believe in an afterlife, you have to determine what you actually believe about that. Is it just another "phase" or "spiritual plane" or "other world" or "alternate universe"? Does your belief system indicate that everyone just moves to another place after they die?
If you believe this, then what do you believe about that other place? Does EVERYONE end up there? No difference from here and now except in a different place? Then why worry - it's no different that what you are now experiencing - same people, same thoughts, etc.?
However, if you believe in a heaven and hell type of afterlife, you have to decide where you fit in. Does everyone go to heaven? (then why is there a hell?) How good do you have to be to go to heaven? Who decides?
Do you believe in a God of punishment? or a God of forgiveness? or a God of Grace? How do you reconcile all of these aspects?

I think we are speaking of Iran. An extremely wealthy oil nation which has a budget surplus. I don't think they want anything from us except to leave them alone. The steps that have been taken on behalf of the american taxpayer are to bring it's "self reliant and diversified economy" to it's knees, with very little success.Trading wheat with Iran is a positive thing and should be encouraged. The solution to the problem lies in part in ending Chinese and Russian support for Iran and it's nuclear program. How you ask? With the Congressional leadership from both parties behind you, tell both the Russians and the Chinese that any use of nuclear weapons by Iran will be considered a nuclear attack by Russia and China, and dealt with as such. The Chinese and Russians are playing a triangular game. Make them aware that if Iran does something foolish, then Russia and China loose everything. I would also make it clear that continued cordial relations depended on constraining Iran, and the US could restrict Chinese imports if they didn't care to cooperate.
Of course they will howl in protest at first, but in time everyone will come to the bargaining table in earnest because the Russians and Chinese do not want to go up in smoke because some Iranian zealot lit the world on fire.
Threatening other nuclear weapon rich countries if they don't do what we want is insane.

It's all coming to a point where there will be many changes in world customs.
The Eu will suffer more than Iran.
Some big companies in the EU and in the US will find loopholes and sometimes push the envelope to make that big dollar while other law=abiding ones suffer.
Alternative sources will be discovered
Alternative monetary exchange will be found and that includes weaning the world away from the us petro and trading dollars..this has already started. For Iran, Bartering is just the interlude before the change.
All impediments thrown at the Iranian regime are also impediments for the rest of the world that want to do business and improve their lot.
New insurance companies will be born, ripe for China to go into it. Will Britain suffer a little?
A new system of international banking will emerge starting with non-aligned countries.
Some countries, although working with the US and Europe still are thinking that this could happen to them and what then? Time will gradually wean them away from the mighty usa and europe.
These sanctions hurt all countries. South Korean businesses went through hell in the last years. 2 years ago, it is alleged, Japan was scouring all empty barrels for LNG after the Iranian embargo. How long can they support the decaying european and american politicians and economy? The breaking point will be when Iran survives in grand style, and it will, and they will be left without 2 or 3 years of progress. But this is what the us wants. Keep back the progress of emerging economies since their's is in the dolldrums, they will be comparatively always better off.

I could agree with us doing that from a bully point. I sometimes wonder if the former USSR baled the cold war with the intent of re-emerging as an economic power. It was virtually a stand-off. They are far away economically but they have a pretty potent next door neighbor and seem to be pretty well aligned with Iran. By proxy we seem to be still fighting a cold war. The balance of powers very well could be shifting as you describe. Id almost guarantee it. We'd be doing ourselves a great favor cutting the defense budget and paying for healthcare and other RnD like Stem Cells and Energies. Make those type things our "currency"!!

You are correct that in terms of Dogma there is only one interpretation in Islam however leaving aside the 5 tenets of Islam, in practices there are many schools of practice and culturally nuanced differences among muslims, apart from the Shia & Sunni divide. You have the separation of church and state all wrong (for one, it's not mentioned in the Constitution as such). Also, it has never been interpreted as strict (in either direction). The 1st Amendment provides that the government will not establish a state religion and that it will not give preference to any one religion. That does not mean that morality cannot be the basis for laws and the belief in a creator the basis for rights. In fact these elements of religion can be deduced from philosophy – as was done commonly up to the mid 19th century (and even till today – as the validity of the arguments has not changed).
The test for the applicability of moral norms is whether they correspond to right reason. It is universally agreed that murder is wrong. Right thinking individuals view drug use as wrong. Morality is all around us; to argue it cannot be a basis for public policy is foolish.
With regard to rights...if they are not given by a creator, then one must come up with some other basis for them. Ultimately, these other attempts all boil down to rights being something given by man (either a king, a government, a dictator, what have you). As such, these are not true rights in that the grantor can rescind them. Rights, as something pertaining to the essence of a being, cannot belong to something that evolves. It doesn't make sense to argue that at some point in evolution that rights started to flow, without cause, from the essence of the being. (This is not to say evolution did not happen, just that certain aspects of the essence of humanity cannot be generated by evolution).

I'd like to remind (or inform you if the shoe fits) that it was for religious purposes (the freedom to practice in peace) that our country founded. You need to be more tolerant. Often reading most people's comments in these sections are amusing than the article itself. However, I wanted to comment some the obvious ignorance and uneducated comments thrown around by some of the individuals above.
First and foremost; A countries political party and regime most often is not the best representation of that nations culture, people, traditions and way of life. Clearly this is evident of some of the less than intelligent comments above which does not represent majority of the well informed american citizens.
Secondly for those of you who have not lived through a war, embraced your family during an air strike to run for shelters or first hand seen foreign boots march down your streets, stop, reflect on those realities before advocating war. The best impression of majority of above comments is that most seem to think WAR is what you see and experience on video games in your living room. Perhaps those who little about war should talk to their fellow immigrants from some of those countries or soldiers who come back from Iraq and Afghanistan who still have fresh images in their minds.
Any kind of war and any kind of invasion is often dreamt up by the few who have personal and political interest at stake- sadly it is then paid for and fought by many who have very little to do with actual interest that started the conflict- often chasing an ideological myth. Muslim or Jew, Christian or Buddhist are people just like the next person. Non deserve to be threatened or feel in danger because of the other who has more or lives in a wealthier country or so on...
