A U.S. defense official said there are no immediate plans for American military officials to work with the newly created military council in Syria.
"This was just announced a few days ago, so it's probably premature to make decisions on what our role will be," the official said.
Security Clearance: a deep look at military, intelligence and diplomacy
The Syrian National Council chairman said Thursday that the group had formed a military council that would act as a de facto Defense Ministry to oppose President Bashar al Assad's regime.
The American defense official said the State Department remains the primary lead for U.S. contact with Syrian opposition groups. He also cautioned that the fragmented nature of those groups represents a challenge in coordinating strictly with one agent.
"We know the Syrian National Council doesn't speak for the Free Syria movement, for example, and vice versa. So that presents an immediate question of who is and is not represented by this military council."
It's a good step forward, but there has to be a unified front in Syria against the regime, and it has to have popular support, before the US can really do anything. I hope we can reach the point of supporting them a la Libya, if just from a humanitarian standpoint. But we can't shower a collection of unknown and unorganized protesters with money and weapons and expect a positive response. That's wishful thinking and we've seen the approach fail several times in Central America and South America.
The whole world hates israel. Pass it on.
The world hates your facist beliefs pass it on
This is one race in which we don't have a horse running ! There is no reason to aid a revolution that will bring another Islamic sectarian government to power in Syria. Politically, this is a non-starter. The only pressure we need to exert is on Assad to exercise more humanitarian behavior. With Iran sitting on Syria's border we would have to maintain a large presence on the ground forever. And a new regime probably wouldn't want us there long term anyhow
Typo correction : ...Iran...should read Iraq
Vote Ron Paul!
