Clinton issues warnings on Afghanistan, Syria

By Elise Labott, reporting from Rabat, Morocco

Criticism of President Barack Obama's apology for the burning of Qurans in Afghanistanis not helpful, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday in a wide-ranging interview with CNN.

"I find it somewhat troubling that our politics would enflame such a dangerous situation in Afghanistan," Clinton said of the complaints by Republican presidential candidates and some experts about Obama's apology.

Obama apologized Thursday in a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Qurans, which he called "inadvertent" and an "error."

"It was the right thing to do to have our president on record as saying this was not intentional, we deeply regret it," Clinton said.

At least four American troops have been killed in apparent revenge attacks in the past week, and dozens of Afghans have been killed or wounded in protests about the incident.

"We are hoping that voices inside Afghanistan will join that of President Karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation," Clinton said. "It is out of hand and it needs to stop."

Clinton also said diplomatic efforts were under way to peel away support from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.

"We have a lot of contacts, as do other countries - a lot of sources within the Syrian government and the business community and minority communities - and our message is the same to all of them: 'You cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it is going to fall,'" she said.

But she said the Syrian National Council was not yet the kind of united opposition movement that toppled Moammar Gadhafi with international help in Libya last year.

The Libyan opposition base in the city of Benghazi gave the international community "an address" to deal with.

"We don't have that in Syria," she said. "The Syrian National Council is doing the best it can but obviously it is not yet a united opposition."

Clinton also defended telling an audience in Tunisia Saturday that Obama would be re-elected.

"I was asked whether the comments in the primary campaign, some of which have been quite inflammatory, represented America," she said, adding that they did not necessarily. "I represent America."

As America's top diplomat, Clinton would not normally make political statements to a foreign audience.

"Probably my enthusiasm for the president got a little out of hand," Clinton said with a laugh.

But she said her comments were appropriate.

"I know what happens in campaigns. I've been there, done that, and I know that things are said that are not going to be put into practice or policy," she said. "I did think I needed to point that out to the audience."

Clinton ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, losing out to Obama.

    ;Note to Barak Obama:

When you're dealing with Arabs and Muslims you NEVER apologize for ANYTHING! I'm disappointed that you don't have sense enough to know that already. Those guys look on anyone who appologises as being weak – and to be ridiculed and used.

Back in the '90s I was doing contract work for some of those towel heads. Out of about 1000 documents we lost 1. When we realized we didn't have it we appologized. Oh man! The s***t hit the fan! The crap we took after we appologized was ten times worse than what they said when they discovered we hadn't sent it back with the rest. We would have been a whole lot better off to do as they would do – roll our eyes and look up in the sky and say "Gee, I dunno what happened to it. You must be mistaken."

NEVER appologize to an towel head!

Wow. After the first sentence I was like "This guy kind of sounds racist, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because maybe he's just very knowledgeable about the people of the area." Thanks for clearing up any confusion I had with the second part!

You sir, are a racist bigot. Why do you compare all muslims ad arabs with the barbaric mobs of the middle east and Asia. There are 6 million law-abiding tax-paying muslims in the US who contribute to this society. Comments like yours incite hatred and place our own citizens in danger. Why exactly are our troops still in Pipelinistan. Did you know that Karzai was a consultant to Unocol. Did you know that Unocol presented their pipeline plan to the US congress over 10 years ago and it is currently in the final stages of planning. How else do the oil-barons get the oil and gas from the Caspian sea to the world except through Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey. Trillions of $$$$$$$ involved. And more people die every day from this insanity

All my uncles were pipe liners through the 1950s to the 1990s. Everyone of them would tell stories about the Arabs and how they were homosexuals. They must have reread the Quaran or made new policy bc now they murder their homosexuals. They could never get over how their camels, dogs, chickens meant more to them than their or wives and daughters. When a religion teaches it's followers to kill out a race of people (Jews) and if non-believers do not convert, kill them. This is not being racist. I am a minority myself and I believe in the freedom of religion (a loving and forgiving). Most religions do have these attributes. Islam is a hateful religion. The west and east cannot get along because we will never have sharia law as long as we have our US Constitution. Believe it and deal with it..it is what it is!!!

Obama's apology is one more of his efforts at appeasing Muslims. Chamberlain thought appeasing Germany was brilliant strategy in the 1930s and look what happened to England and the rest of Europe. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Hilary, shut up. Had he kept his mouth shut and not apologized, there would be no problem. A national leader and its senior military commander in the field and some pussy in the pentagon have no business APOLOGIZING TO THE ENEMY. I will vote for you in 2016, but for now, shut the hell up. He was wrong, and he should know that. Millions of Americans know he was wrong.

I'm getting tired of our president apologizing all the time. The president has little power yet he REPRESENTS us in the world. Most americans would NOT apologize for something like that. Maybe he should be getting our opinions more often. There needs to be more voting in this country. Maybe a weekly vote on various matters. Those who care about the country would show up.

It would be very helpful if we Americans can get behind this President for once and support what is the right thing to do. It just may save some American son or daughter serving over there.

Obama's apology was dumb. He should have said that if the Afghans don't appreciate our presence and understand that dumb things happen in war, we are leaving immediately ir not sooner.

Obama doesn't want to leave, at least until after election day, because its his war and it is not going well.

Listen to all of you fighting between yourselves. We cannot even agree that hillary is a complete fool and barack is a cry baby together without fighting. Why serve? I mean really? are we really fighting for freedom or are we just blind to the illusion of patriotism. All we are doing is making it possible to be controlled by our so called leaders. None of them do right by us they are supposed to represent us but when did this happen last. We just sit back like good little sheeple and bicker about who is better repubs or dems. Every one of them sell us down the river. It is time we stand and reestablish a gov that represents us not special interests or the banking industry or wall street and yes they all do it both parties. This has got to change or we will seperate as a nation eventually yes even we will split into too nations or three, maybe this is best or maybe it is inevitable I am not sure but I do know that we are divided I do know that we hate each other at times. This is not working we must change and if that means totally retooling our gov then so be it. I mean relly fellas and ladies everyone is always talking about our founding fathers and their plan for the country. Well that was 234 years ago I am sure they cound not have imagined the US being the power it is today or the problems and cowards that run our country and have found ways to destroy the plan. What is the quote united we stand divided we fall well guess what we are quite divided.

I was just trying to make the point that our country is not going well, we are being taken advantage of and most of us most of the time do not even know it. All we care to do is fight about repub or dem policies one being better than the other. In reality neither is different they are both leading us to the same place.

AND, it is our Patriotic DUTY 9not just a right) to stand up and speak out against and ineffectual government. What you said about the troops was spot on as I said about a dozen posts below yours.

It's comments like yours that illustrate why liberals have a hard time willing themselves to listen to conservatives, it's because most of the time it takes this form. Maybe when you can step back and realize how delusional you are with these various straw man arguments and misconceptions, we might actually have some progress. In the mean time we're here waiting for a better response to this than "You're too naive to understand why we should have gone to war and lost thousands of lives on the false premise of WMD's and initiated a civil war which cost hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives and tarnished America's reputation across the world. Lets send a beacon to the world that if you have oil we will attack and destabilize you for it." When you learn to drop the weight of pride you find you can reach heights that were previously impossible.

As usual, the truth escapes the public. Fact #1 the Qurans in question were burned intentionally, not accidentally. They were reclaimed from a detention center and had been used by detainees who had written notes in them – information that could possibly have jeopardized the security of our troops there and in other countries abroad. Fact #2 Islam itself says that the "retirement" of a Quran by burning is acceptable. Anyone who trusts the media or government to give them the whole truth (or usually any of it) is simply naive ... do your own research people, don't let the corporate/government controlled media spoon feed you their version of events.

Show me someplace where it says it's OK to burn the Koran under any circumstances in the Muslim world. Whether those books had incriminating info in them is irrelevant. If you want to destroy the books because they were being used for bad things is one thing, but for Americans to burn them in front of Muslims is a huge blunder that they should have known was a bad idea.

Hey Noduck....they had impeded messages on how to take out our troops....it DESERVED to be burned, BURN baby BURN. Funny, and they never have a reason to do this and do...burn OUR flags, our bibles, disrespect our people and our way of living....do you see us crying, 'don't burn those!' No, we don't live in deserts and throw rocks at people we disagree with. I would be more then happy to join those troops. Been there, seen it all.....and, their reaction of this, is expected....we need to just nuke that place, and come home and take care of our own...you're obviously someone who loves our Muzzy in office, not a clue on reality, just a sales pitch/show, for 3 years now.

Koran burning to get rid of it is a last resort. One should wrap it in a clean cloth or sink it in deep waters. If these two options are not possibles then it is permitted to burn it and dispose the ashes in a river or barry them. I am a moslem, has never supported radicalism of any kind. I consider myself a model muslim and in islamic standards, the reaction in Afganistant is way off the islamic beliefs. The burning of the Kuran does not justify the killing of innocent individuals. In islamic standards, that is worse the act of burning the Kuran. This reaction is based on hatred against America, and religion is being used as an escuse (a false escuse I should say). What is sad about the whole story is that these extremists tarnish the image of islam and people in the west think that this is what islam is about. the word islam itself means peace and these people are way off the core beliefs of the religion.

Ok FLASH BACK TO HITLER'S GERMANY!!!!!! What group of people today best fit Hitler's German supremacist facist movement?????? Which party??? Most Germans of the day believed it was an innocuous party platform that supported a strong German Nationalist movement, most went along until the very end. Yet no one today would condone Hitler's movement??? or do we????

As a life long Republican let me state the Republicans can pretend to keep their head in the sand all they want but it is our party that sews the seeds of division through a platform that assimiliates everyone's greed into a tool to enslave them. The Reagan trickle down economics will not work unless America constantly expands its "IMPERIALISTIC BASE" meaning America has to have smaller countries that will support it long term goals. THIS IS A FAILED POLICY, WHY ON EARTH DO YOU THINK MOST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD LOVES AMERICANS BUT CANNOT STAND OUR ARROGANCE!!!!!!!! Where you find American hatred, you will find a hatred of US Government expansionist policy that never delivers what is promised. The foreigners don't hate American people but they resent our government pretending to be policemen while placing friendly governments into so our corporations benefit!!!!!!!!!

Wake up Republicans, our party is behind the curve so far we look like Southern Slaves states must have before the civil war!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is our platform that is not aligned with the rest of the world, not the other way around. The entire world has been developing at an incredible rate, yet were not happy unless we dominate everyone. American policy since Ronald Reagan's supporting global covert operations have caused most of the modern day wars were are facing today!!!!!! That along with the mess England Spain & France left over from their colonies!!!!!!! But the point is America needs to build its own economy and stay out of meddling with foreign governments!!!!!!!!!!

Let's face it, we are still fighting and dying in Afghanistan more than a decade later simply because GWB, Dick Cheyney, Donald Rumsfeld and the GOP deliberately and recklessly abandoned and prolonged the Afghan war to invade Iraq. And all this sh*it that's happening in Afghanistan today would have been avoided because this war would have ended at least five years ago had the GOP scu*mbags hadn't abandoned this war to go into Iraq. Therefore I just pray to God that all these stinking Republican scu*mbags all die soon along with their stinking loves ones.

The people in Afghanistans reaction is ridiculous, however this is not about, "We are stronger than you so we do what we want." Kind of attitude, and that "bush" attitude will do nothing but create more hatred for us. Ok so, Obama takes your advise and thumbs his nose at the people for this, it will only cause more anger and Americans will be in greater danger. I cannot stand this American attitude that we are so much greater than anyone else that we dont need to show respect. They (GOP) went after Obama for bowing to the Chinese President showing respect in that culture and they will of course go at him for this. Hes a great leader and President.

The president did the most respectful thing by apologizing. I just returned from Afghanistan in July of last year which marked my fifth combat tour. Their religion is everything to them there way of life, who they are, and how they live. When I read some of these remarks the presidential hopefuls had said during the debate about the letter. It only proves that we have a problem in the Republicans party which keeps springing up at he worst times in this country history. We finally have some peace where are men and women at arms are not getting killed on the regular daily basis .Then you get some rich politician who never seen combat making an tasteless remark during a debate . I hope and pray that the letter is taking as a gesture of respect for the country leadership and they will end this unnecessary bloodshed. Let god be with those you are still serving over there.

You trolls are beyond belief. It doesn't matter who is in the White House, Democrat or Republican or other. Burning those Korans was stupid and insensitive. An apology was required. Not to apologize would have angered them infinitely more, and with good reason. It would have indicated that it was sanctioned by the highest levels of our government when it was just the act of some small-minded idiot on the ground there in Afghanistan. I have the greatest respect and admiration for those who have answered their country's call but I don't kid myself that they are all angels. There are racists in all walks of life, including the military. Burning those Korans was a hideous act and an apology isn't enough. The perpetrators need to be dealt with severely; then maybe that action will help ease tensions a bit.

No is wasn't it was an accident. Thoughtless maybe. You are talking about paper you idiot. Not flesh and blood. The book is a book it represents hysteria, hate, ignorance and superstition. Just like the bible that book has been responsible for more horror and inhumanity than anything ever published in the world.

      February 26, 2012 at 6:53 pm | Reply
      • Nodack

The book is what their entire culture is built around. We are on their soil and we are disrespecting them over and over. The first Koran burning, torturing their people and taking pictures of it, waterboarding against the Geneva Conventions, killing their people and peeing on them for the camera, the pastor in the US wanting to burn the Koran, the latest burning of the Koran.

I believe the Koran and the Bible are both man made cults, but I choose to respect people's beliefs. I certainly wouldn't condone invading a country and desecrating everything they hold dear as a way to win their hearts and minds.

        February 26, 2012 at 7:03 pm |
      • Rick

You don't honestly believe it was an accident do you? How can you possibly be that naive? That's the one thing about the apology that I don't like: President Obama apologized for the wrong thing. The right thing to have said was "On behalf of the people of the United States I apologize for the senseless and racist burning of the Korans. It is not the policy of our government to insult the religious beliefs of anybody. This was a hateful and insensitive act by a disturbed individual or group of individuals and in no way reflects upon our nation's respect for you or your views. An immediate investigation has already been ordered and those responsible will face dire consequences".

Claiming that it was an accident made the apology insincere, and was rightly scorned by the Afghan people. Anybody who claims otherwise is kidding himself.

Well Nodack, ya let the cat outta the bag. Think the Bible is a cult. Wrong again; it's the book of Truth. Our laws were based on Judeo/Christian law. Sure beats the Koran or any thing you or anyone else could come up with. History PROVES when people follow the law their nation prospers; when they fall away they suffer. Sorry Bud but the facts support this. Actually, I'm not sorry for that but sorry, you along with the multitude of other non-believers, don't get it.
Yeah, I know it's just my opinion but I'm sticking with it and time will prove me right.

It is about time for us to stop being the traffic cop for all the world. Let the United Nations deal with it and we will be part of that entity. Bring the troops home – let the natural order of things happen around the world and focus all that money we waste on people who don't want us around anyway on jobs for Americans.

I am sick and tired hearing about the things we should and shouldn't do abroad. Time to let the world feel that loss our financial support. If you want to live like a tribesman – go for it. If you want democracy then do like we did go for it.

It's not the book per se that's important, it is what the Quran represents to these people. It represents something sacred to them and should be treated as such.

What if someone took photographs of your mother and/or children, dropped their pants and took a big "dump" on them? What if the whole thing was videotaped and placed on YouTube? Feel good does it?

It's the same with the Quran. It's always disrespectful to insult someone's sense of the sacred.

Obama did the right thing by apologizing . . . citizens of our country ought to unite and buy new Qurans to send to the people of Afghanistan as a token of recompense . . .

If apologizing helps to defuse this situation, so be it. American soldiers are being killed! This is no time for political posturing or arrogance. If we use the logic of the negative attacks from the GOP candidates, if you step on someone's foot by mistake, you should not apologize because it was a mistake? We need to ease this dangerous situation in whatever was possible, not inflame it.

Lets not forget the most basic of the Pashtun tribal laws; Vengence BADAL: (Eye for an Eye) Self-respect and sensitivity to insult is another essential trait of Pashtun character. The poorest among them has his own sense of dignity and honor and he vehemently refuses to submit to any insult. In fact every Pashtun considers himself equal if not better than his fellow tribesmen and an insult is, therefore, taken as scurrilous reflection on his character. An insult is sure to evoke insult and murder is likely to lead to a murder.

Customs? Occupy? We are there to try to protect this country from extremists. Problem is: any religion that encourages the kind of revenge we have seen after apologizing for "the mistake" is an extreme religion. This is exactly what Obama and Clinton AND Bush don't understand.

So you say we are in Afghanistan to protect their people from extremists? Who said that? Bush never said that. We went there out of revenge for 9/11. We went there to get Al Queda and the Taliban refused to give him up so as Bush said, "You are either with is or against us". I don't blame Bush for going into Afghanistan. Even Obama voted for that, but the reason wasn't to protect their people. It was to kill terrorists that attacked America.

All this overly aggressive talk about disrespecting others or spitting in the face of angry mobs of men who severely out-number our brave men and women in harms way, troubles me deeply.

There are numerous well known religious taboos you don't intentionally engage (unclean meats to a Jew or Adventist; offer roast beef sandwiches to Hindus, offering lies as truths in Christian worship) in. Only the truly un-learned individual would do so at their own peril – just don't involve others. Truly be brave and do it by yourself.

I have no problem for the President of our country to offer an apology to the people of Afghanistan and Muslims everywhere for the unintentional wrong committed when copies of the Muslim Holy Book were mistakenly burned.
The acceptance of any apology is in direct proportion to the sincerity of one offering it. Leaders know a fake when they see one. And although some deny him at home, Obama is respected elsewhere. His apology holds weight.

I know what it is like to have a loved one in that environment, night and day. My only prayer is they return home, safe and sound. The mindless, media transported, mouthing off of a spineless few from a great distance away, who have NEVER served in our Armed Forces, or even had a one-on-one schoolyard fight, puts those we love in danger.

These kind of presidential candidates showing that kind of ignorance of the situation and the consequences of their verbal actions are truly unworthy of our consideration for the office of President. Their character is as flimsy as paper and just as likely to blow away when even stronger political winds blow our way.

In more stronger words, STFU, until the situation subsides or until all the troops are home.

I am sorry for this Administration – Apologizing for this was perhaps one of the dumbest decisions Obama has every made; by doing so he gave credibility to the silly 'outrage' that some Afghans are currently inciting. Extremist Muslims use any of this as dry timber to ignite the flames of hatred. The Middle East has become a powderkeg just like the Balkans in WWI – and Obama and Clinton have paved the avenue for some bad kick-back.

Muslims burn human beings, churches and buildings, without any apology. Holy quran is what they call it, agreed. Which means that allah the owner of the book can fight for his own book, but extremist are doing the fight for their allah that shows how weak their allah is. Worst of it all a whole U.S president is apologising for burning a book, funny. And that has given those extremists the right to kill.

    K, one more time:
"U.S. officials, including President Barack Obama, have apologized for the burning and called it inadvertent. A military official - speaking on condition of anonymity, given the sensitivity of the issue - said the materials were from a detainee center's library and had "inscriptions" that appeared to be used to "facilitate extremist communications."

How many soldiers will be worth a few inadvertendly supposedly improperly burned Qurans...that would've gotten burned anyway sometime because of their defacement. That may be your choice but not the choice that our military personnel has sacrificed for and continue to defend nor the choice of the majority of Americans. THAT is precisely why we need a new POTUS.

I suppose it's possible that the military had NO IDEA that burning the Koran in front of Muslims would upset them, but they would have to be complete morons living in a cave not to know that. We already burned one before and set off a riot. Then the pastor in the US was going to do it and set off a riot. We tortured their prisoners, piled them naked in pyramid and took pictures of them with US military posing smiling at the great fun they were having and posted it on the Internet and set off a riot. Just a few weeks ago we found the pictures of US servicemen peeing on dead Afghanistans they killed posing for more fun pictures of their trophy kills and that made the locals even more happy about being occupied. Now we burn the Koran AGAIN I from of Muslims setting off yet another riot and Republicans are upset at Obama for oppologizing saying none is needed.

Probably just a couple privates burning sensitive materials. Happens every day. We had a burn barrel in Korea where we incinerated all paper materials every night. It is a standard S2 (intelligence) duty/function. Probably some new Lieutenant in charge with a week in country and no clue as to the ramifications. The burning of copies of Quran should never have happened, the west is not in a war against Islamic people but against terrorists who happen to be or claim to be muslim. Protocol dictates that President Obama had no other choice than apologise for the actions of some stupid American soldiers. For GOP/Tea bag presidential candidates to make the comments they have shows they have no idea about how they should act if (God forbid) one of them got an extremely lucky break and got into the White House: None of them that made such comments is fit to be a politician let alone president.

Do the people of America want to fight terrorists or fight Islam because what these soldiers did and the support given to them by GOP/Tea bag candidates will spread this war from being against terrorists to being a warn against Islam and with all America's might and power you might find a war against Islam is one that you cannot win.

I hope for the sake of all the sane Americans that this war does not esculate because some dumb people called GOP/Tea Bags have no idea about being a politician and diplomacy.

"Judith" writes: "Do the people of America want to fight terrorists or fight Islam?" What she FAILS to understand is that Islam, far from being "just another religion" is (on another level) a theo-political, expanisionist ideology, anti-democratic and both totalitarian and fascist. Fascism is defined by the use of violence/threats to achieve political ends. The aim of Islam is the ultimate subjugation eventually of ALL OTHER RELIGIONS. The Koran is EXPLICIT IN THIS and clearly states: "Islam must rule over all other religions, EVEN if violence is necessary." The Koran, in part (as Princeton scholar Bernard Lewis once stated), "reads like a war tract." There are hundreds of vicious incitements to mercilessly execute virtually all other groups who refuse to be subjugated. Historically, it was a clear choice: Either CONVERT to Islam or be slaughtered. We are still seeing this being played out in the world. Personally, my take on the Islamic world is that the term "radical Muslim" is almost a redundancy. Many of the braver Muslims in the world (those who seek to change Islam from within) have had to face the threat of assassination virtually every day they wake up. Years and years later, both world class author Salman Rushdie and the elderly cartoonist Westergaard STILL have to face either death threats or actual attack. Five years after publishing his cartoon, Westergaard was attacked in his own home in Denmark by an Islamic fanatic with an axe. The attempted assassin was captured and given a very long sentence. Islam will NEVER compromise–by nature it seeks domination. It is no ACCIDENT that the entire Islamic world has little use for the respect of individual conscience and even less respect for "democracy." The Koran is explicit–Islam is THEOCRATIC with power vested in a handful of so-called "clerics." Muslim clerics are sanctioned to call for the death of ANYONE who they deem to be "A Threat to Islam." Which translates as virtually ANYONE too critical of this cult. Like the Mafia, huge, huge sums of money are often offered to have these assassinations carried out. Had it come on the planet just a year ago, I suspect Islam would be banned in the West as a totalitarian and fascist ideology, one that runs DIRECTLY in conflict with the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

What if all the Muslim countries stopped exporting oil West? Well, I'll tell you what would happen ... the Muslim countries would screw themselves over just as much (if not more) than the countries they would be trying to punish. You see all the major oil producing states that are Muslim countries produce what is called crude oil ... to get what we call gasoline, jet fuel, etc ... it has to be refined. And guess which countries are the major oil refiners? Yup ... Western countries. So actually, even those oil producing states controlled by Muslim have to import REFINED oil. They sell the crude to the West, the West refines, it and then sell back what they don't need to the producer state.

Plus, while countries like America import a good portion of their oil they're actually sitting on untapped crude oil reserves that exceed that of even countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Dubai. That's because the United States has a "use their oil first policy." If the United States wanted to it could produce and refine all it's own oil for over 100 years without having to import one drop. They don't do it because 1) they don't want the negative environmental impact such a policy would have, and 2) it's easier to use other people's oil at this point.

I suggest next time you know what you're talking about before you start making idle (and incredibly ignorant) comments.

You're high. What bar did you hear that in? The US is completely tapped when it comes to high quality, easy flowing crude. We plucked all the low hanging fruit decades ago. The fact that we now drill miles into the crust in waters a mile or more deep tells you we have no easy crude left. The reason we import is because Saudi Arabia can still pump a barrel of crude for $5 while it takes $60 to get a barrel from tar sands. Even the Bakkan formation with its 7 billion or so barrels of producible oil is only enough to cover one year of US demand and it will take decades to get that shale-locked, ultra slow flowing crude out of the ground.

Blursd you are 100% correct. No oil sold means instant and total internal civil war for ALL oil exporting Muslim countries. It is the same reason why our "leadership" will not repatriate the 30 million illegal Mexicans in the US. It would also lead to total and complete civil war in Mexico. Have a stable neighbor to the south is deemed the better alternative. I say let the Muslims fight each other when their leaderships money dries up from lack of oil sales. I say let Mexico fall into civil war. It is time for the US to stop supporting the world. That goes for YOU TOO China! Let's see what happens to your restless citizens if the US stops buying your cheap garbage. You TOO will fall into civil war.

However, your comment about shutting oil off is a little over the top. The United States has plenty of oil and natural gas to fuel our nation. It is unfortunate that Muslim countries believe they are in control of our destiny. They are not. In fact I venture to say that if we have a new President committed to energy Independence. Then Muslim countries can go their own way.

Mrs. Clinton is the original sycophant, she's elevated toadyism to a fine art. While Obama grovels to the Muslims, she grovels to Obama when what she actually wants is to replace him in the WH. Does she really expect the public to sit back and not critique the President's blunders? Isn't that what totalitarian governments demand of their citizens?

In true liberal fashion, be sure to resort to name-calling when you have no argument.

Definition of grovel: "to humble oneself or act in an abject manner, as in great fear or utter servility", an apt description of Obama's action.

        February 26, 2012 at 6:04 pm |
      • LithiumZero

I didn't resort to name calling for lack of a point to argue. Your post was simply that.... moronic. There is no point in trying to argue against such nonsense but I'll give it a shot. Anyone who thinks that burning the holy book of another's faith is not a blunder worthy of an apology has questionable morals and terrible judgement. Riddle me this...are people dying because the books were burned or because the president apologized? Is it ridiculous to kill over a book? YES. Was it stupid to do it knowing the repercussions could be tragic? ABSOLUTELY!!!! Grow up or go sit at the kids table.

    • Ray

Obviously you are biased, and did not spell check your post. More importantly, the president took a proactive approach to the situation in Afghanistan. Whether you are motivated by politics or not, it is logical to assume that there would be substantial fall out and or possible loss of life due to this incident. The act it self (burning the texts) may have been simply an error, but the significant (dangerous) part is how it could be interpreted (manipulated) to further disrupt progress in the region.

This is pointless to apply logic to the comment you posted on this link or any others because of underlying bias, however I feel better.

Just ask any of the two former President Bushs' and President Reagan. This is the same philosophy that Bush had – never apologize, no matter if you are right or wrong – that got us such a bad rap in the world. You insist on sticking to false "might", thinking any sort of self-reflection is weakness. You want to be number one and think the only way to be that is to shove your way through. You fail to see where true strength comes from. TG Obama gets it.

This is no different than, say, if Afghani soldiers burned American flags. The Afghani president/government would apologize for it. It's out of respect, not a sign of weakness like some fools would make it to be. The president did what any president would do to try and diffuse a situation that has put our troops in more danger. The Repubs can talk all they want in their primary about it, but if any of them was president, they would have done the same exact thing.

Bigger hearts bring about bigger rewards. Why the allies got a bigger share of Germany after WWII... because the Allied treated the Germans better than the Russians. We shouldn't be involved in the region anyway, but we did... they didn't come to us, we go to them. We had Osama Bin Laden... but we started the conflict... we should have consulted with the regional countries but we didn't... the world doesn't belong to the United States.

Exactly, but then again politics in the US keeps getting uglier every day. Now we have news stations dedicated to spreading the propaganda of their party 24/7. They have made half of America the enemy of the other half. We are now a divided nation. If a Republican is elected President I am pretty sure that Democrats will do the same thing the Republicans are doing and will appose any and everything that President does. Democrats will demonize the government and Republicans will preach that it is unAmerican to disrespect the President and Government.

Everywhere Clinton has spent much time in the Middle East there is now trouble of some kind. deposing the people who keep that bunch of morons in line is not working to anyones benefit. I believe her and Obamas mission is to create chaos wherever they can. We are looking at the fall out from their actions, even in Mexico with them giving the cartels weapons, chaos. Can anyone explain that action? Obama and Clinton represent Fascism. compare this country now with Germany 1933 and you will see we are on the same path. I will not leave out Bush, he is a idiot. We now have more separation than ever yet we fail to see that the wealthy want only two divisions in the world, the poor and the rich. 1. Give me some examples of where Clinton has spent time in the Middle East that there is now trouble, and explain how she instigated that trouble.

      2. Define the word "Fascism" without looking it up. (Let's see if you even know what it means.) Explain how Hillary and Obama "are fascists."

      3. Explain how we're in any way similar to Germany in 1933, economically, politically, and socially. What events in our recent history correlate to anything that happened within a similar range of years in Germany prior to 1933?

If you can't answer any of these without citing verifiable facts (not opinions), I'm going to assume that you're just another amateur hack acting on misinformed gut feeling.

The most telling thing about incidents like this and the inevitable apologies and pandering to the "sensitivities" of Muslims that follow is how low the world's expectations evidently are regarding Islam.

If any other group on the planet responded in such a juvenile and barbaric manner to so trivial a provocation they would be rightly condemned as savages and lunatics. It's just par for the course for Islam, though, and nobody expects any better from them at this point. If it's not the burning of a koran (whether in Afghanistan or Florida) providing an excuse to riot and murder in the name of their supremacist, intolerant religious doctrine, it's always something else.

So, as usual, the civilized world must once again sigh like exasperated parents and soothe and coddle the Islamic world like irrational little babies who are incapable of controlling themselves like adults. It's pathetic, really, and any Muslim with an ounce of maturity and education ought to be ashamed of their juvenile, primitive, backward culture.

They just had our troops urinating on their soldiers dead corpses, they asked us to leave, and now we burn their holy books. Do I find it strange that they get the most upset over the last one? Yes. Do I think we have overstayed our welcome? Hell yes.

If we had an unwelcome army within our borders "liberating us" and they urinated on our dead, stayed after being asked to leave, and then shot a few bald eagles – I'd be rioting too, and I imagine so would you.

Well, maybe a sense of perspective would help.

The US could have turned Al Qaeda's operational home base of Afghanistan into a nuclear wasteland by the evening of September 11th back in 2001 and called it a day, which is undoubtedly what would have happened to us at the mercy of Islam had the roles been reversed on that day. But, because we're nice, we went in there and did our best to only blow up the people that were most directly responsible, and then we actually tried to do something proactive and help them rebuild their country into something that was not quite so much of a medieval hellhole to prevent it from happening again, which any sane person would look at as a mutually beneficial arrangement.

A trillion dollars and a decade later, this is what good will we've bought for our efforts. So, lesson learned, I guess, regarding the fruits of dealing reasonably with religious supremacist savages.

You can lead a horse to water, and all that...

What was he supposed to do? Cheer, laugh? In fact the burning of the Koran is an established method to destroy the books. Much like the the proper burial of the American flag is to burn it. These books contained hidden messages and other writings. I have no problem with Muslims killing Muslims, the less of them the safer the world is. But let us get out and let them kill each other.

An established proper way? Says who? In Islamic countries burning of the Koran is punishable by death. Not that I agree, but when occupying an Islamic country which you are trying to win the hearts and minds of the people, burning their most sacred book in front of Muslims isn't the smartest thing to do. If you want to burn the book to get rid of it at least do it in private so you don't cause the country that you are trying to win the hearts and minds of to riot against you.

It seems like simple logic to me.

Maybe so, but what we are accepting is that burning a book is something that makes killing innocent people okay? I don't buy that printed pages, no matter what they contain, are more valuable than human life. Any religion that makes burning their holy book punishable by death is one the world should not tolerate. We allow others to burn our flag, kill our soldiers, and we apologize? There was a time that anyone taking an American citizen hostage was in danger of swift and vicious retaliation. Now they kill our soldiers and we simply turn our backs. The liberals have turned this country into the United States of Pansies.

Whatever. We screwed up. We don't have to agree with Islam to respect its beliefs while occupying their country. Anybody with a half a brain knows that burning their book is one of the worst things you could do over there.

Obama opologizing for it is the right thing to do. Not even a month ago we for into trouble for peeing on their dead people for fun and now this. We are showing their people zero respect and Obama and Clinton are trying to put out the fires we keep starting and you guys think we shouldn't apologize because they are animals that don't deserve respect and you wonder why they don't like us.

Obama and Clinton are both clueless and gutless. Apologizing for insulting muslims is insanity. We should be sending in the Marines to protect Americans who are being attacked by muslim fanatics. For God's sake, they are killing Americans in revenge for damaging a few books. When we fail to defend or avenge groundless attacks on Americans, we put all Americans at greater risk.

The Iraq war was planned before Bush was in office by the GOP. Rumsfelds think tank petitioned Clinton to invade Iraq before Bush was elected. bush hired Rumsfelf as Secretary of Defence. Cheney the VP had to quit his job at Haliburton just to become VP. bush and CO. Lied about the ties to Al Quaeda. They fabricated the WMD evidence. They demanded a UN vote to go to war. The UN voted NO. Hundreds of thousands of people died as a result. Our credibility in the world was crushed. We spent $1,000,000,000,000 on the war for no reason. After everybody found out it was all a lie Republicans re-elected Bush to another term.

You think there is no reason to criticize Bush for murdering 200,000 people and spending $1,000,000,000,000 for no reason?

If you recall anyone ridiculing any of Bush's correspondence with foreign heads of state then you are having what is known as false memories. And in the past criticism during elections stayed within our country's borders. It's just more of the unprecedented contempt that Republicans exhibit towards our President.

Democratic president in charge. Democrats control the senate. Past presidents have been able to push out anything they've wanted with this kind of majority. Even when they don't control the senate. Bush passed bills his final two years in office and the Republicans had control of nothing. Yet, Democrats still come here. They still whine about the big republican boogeyman. They will probably spam filibuster (the talking points they were armed with) even though as I said, past presidents got what they wanted with less. I take bits and pieces from both parties and really don't have an allegiance to either. However, it is troubling the amount of whining and name calling Democrats do and only Democrats do. Makes me feel like I'm in kindergarten again. Why do you guys enjoy and wallow at the fact that you are the weak party? The victim party? That is so sad and shows nothing but weakness. I want my president to succeed whoever he is but our current president does nothing but demonizes rich people and conservatives. It isn't right because we are all AMERICANS first. Please, just stop with the name calling. Also, please stop watching MSNBC/FOX News. Try to get your news from somewhere that won't say what you want to hear. Thank you.

Furthermore, the racist vitriol leveled at this president is beyond the pale... and if you are denying that the racism is there, your are simply being ignorant of the obvious or intellectually dishonest.

You say Bush got things passed even though Democrats had the majority? How is that not possible unless he got Democrats to work with him? Now that Obama is President the Republicans said NO to everything he has proposed from day one.
You say that Democrats have shown no respect and have demonized Republicans and that NO Republican has ever said anything derogatory about Obama. Really, not one Republican has ever said anything derogatory about Democrats or Obama? I can go down this list right here and list a hundred anti Obama derogatory comments. Are you blind?

"We are hoping that voices inside Afghanistan will join that of President Karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation," Clinton said. "It is out of hand and it needs to stop."

So she wants to calm the situation in Afghanistan but fuel it in Syria by keep arming the rebels those Muslim extremist that just by this incident killed many Americans?? Doesn't she learn from her mistake you CANNOT arm Muslims. It's a trouble to the world. Then she goes on saying Clinton also said diplomatic efforts were under way to peel away support from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad. That is exactly what Israelis are doing now to peel away support from Obama where Netanyahu has reportedly recently urged America’s eighth-wealthiest person, his close friend Las Vegas casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson to pour millions directly into the campaigns of Republicans, including Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. This would represent an unprecedented direct Israeli intervention into US presidential candidates’ campaigns, in order to try to avert a second Obama term. Reat RT news and Asia news...so what goes around comes around. The whole Obama administration should be careful how far and how big they dig.

Have you no understanding of the situation? This was an accident. The books were slated for removal to an Afghan site, for various reasons. Somehow they were placed in the wrong bag, or box. The box was sealed, and nobody at the burning site saw inside the boxes - so they didn't do it on purpose.

It may indeed be a horrible sacrilege. But so is war of any kind, and this is NOT the worst thing that has happened in this war. This was not an atrocity perpetrated by the United States - it was an accident, perhaps an awful one - with absolutely no malice intended. Direct your hatred towards the Taliban, who still commit PURPOSEFUL atrocities.

Mrs. Clinton the Secretary General made it clear three months ago when she said that the insurgents in Syria are well-equipped and well-trained. Who did provide weapons to those people? Therefore, now she is saying out in the open that the regime is going to fall...what else she has under her sleeve?? and it's really ironic how she is saying it: We have a lot of contacts, as do other countries – a lot of sources within the Syrian government and the business community and minority communities – and our message is the same to all of them: 'You cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it is going to fall,'" she said.....
It's not her call..if these people want to keep supporting their government it's their choice. You cannot impose it on them. It's like saying you can no longer support president Obama because he is going to fall next election.

As Obama, follower of Reverend Wright, continues to take taxpayer paid vacations, plays golf and takes endless corrupt fund raising trips American heroes die because of his idiotic Vietnam type rules of engagement. His politically correct war is doomed to failure because he worships Raghead values and hate American values. He brings his soiled dirty laundry into the White-house, perpetuates the largest cover up in American history and brings Chicago Style Corruption to America. When will the Obamacrits in the press admit the truth? The teleprompter in chief's administration is a complete and utter failure.

I suppose you also can't admit to yourself that Obama has made significant progress on many fronts in the past 3 years despite near-unanimous opposition from the other party.
