Clinton issues warnings on Afghanistan, Syria

By Elise Labott, reporting from Rabat, Morocco

Criticism of President Barack Obama's apology for the burning of Qurans in Afghanistanis not helpful, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday in a wide-ranging interview with CNN.

"I find it somewhat troubling that our politics would enflame such a dangerous situation in Afghanistan," Clinton said of the complaints by Republican presidential candidates and some experts about Obama's apology.

Obama apologized Thursday in a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Qurans, which he called "inadvertent" and an "error."

"It was the right thing to do to have our president on record as saying this was not intentional, we deeply regret it," Clinton said.

At least four American troops have been killed in apparent revenge attacks in the past week, and dozens of Afghans have been killed or wounded in protests about the incident.

"We are hoping that voices inside Afghanistan will join that of President Karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation," Clinton said. "It is out of hand and it needs to stop."

Clinton also said diplomatic efforts were under way to peel away support from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.

"We have a lot of contacts, as do other countries - a lot of sources within the Syrian government and the business community and minority communities - and our message is the same to all of them: 'You cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it is going to fall,'" she said.

But she said the Syrian National Council was not yet the kind of united opposition movement that toppled Moammar Gadhafi with international help in Libya last year.

The Libyan opposition base in the city of Benghazi gave the international community "an address" to deal with.

"We don't have that in Syria," she said. "The Syrian National Council is doing the best it can but obviously it is not yet a united opposition."

Clinton also defended telling an audience in Tunisia Saturday that Obama would be re-elected.

"I was asked whether the comments in the primary campaign, some of which have been quite inflammatory, represented America," she said, adding that they did not necessarily. "I represent America."

As America's top diplomat, Clinton would not normally make political statements to a foreign audience.

"Probably my enthusiasm for the president got a little out of hand," Clinton said with a laugh.

But she said her comments were appropriate.

"I know what happens in campaigns. I've been there, done that, and I know that things are said that are not going to be put into practice or policy," she said. "I did think I needed to point that out to the audience."

Clinton ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, losing out to Obama.

I couldn't help but notice someone is reposting large portions of previously quoted text but changing the key descriptions from Democrat to Republican???? What on earth has the world came now? We have people that cannot express themselves but cling to an agenda so hard they fake comments supporting it???? Weird, but more so I noticed their all attempting to make Republicans look superior to Democrats morally if that says anything.

It's a darned good thing that people in the U.S. State Dept. are capable of nuanced thought and don't read the comments on CNN. Most of us, if given the opportunity to do what we think should be done in international diplomacy would make a royal mess of it all.

I'm a Republican and I work on wall street. I make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. My life is real easy and real fun. Feels good man. Wasn't easy though. Studied in college for 6 years in something that isn't woman studies or political science. Had crappy jobs initially. Worked hard and didn't blame anyone else when things are tough. Thanks to that I'm happy and living life. In conclusion, f**k off you childish far left liberals. Not all Democrats though, just the far left hippies. A lot of you are actually good people but your hippie and lazy minority gives you a bad rap.

I agree that the far left (liberals) are ignorant and want too much, and are exactly what Rahm Emmanuel called them "f***in re***ds". I also do not like the far right extremist (radicals/tea party) because they are a bunch of racist, white power, nazi skinhead numbnutz. I don't believe President Obama is a liberal, just as much as President Bush (either one) were radicals. They are Democrat and Republican, all three were very good presidents. No they were not perfect, but they cared for the people more than they cared for money.
I hope President Obama gets re-elected, than President Jeb Bush, than President Rahm Emmanuel. That would be awesome the first Jewish President, and I am sure the younger Bush brother would be just as good as his older brother and father. They would be a heck of a lot better than the GOP numbnutz running now. But Santorum has the biggest chance at winning the nomination. Though I don't think him smart enough to be President, I do agree with him on many issues: woman in combat (#1), abortion (but birth control and condoms are not the same), there might be something else, just can't remember at this moment.

ok last lesson for today my fellow misinformed Republican "HITLER YOUTH" Party members, that is assuming half of you are really Republicans or you just like claiming such to feel like a big boy. Anyway, all governments that control currency and commerce within a region become a system of "REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH" once the currency went past the purpose of an exchange and most importantly was government issued!!!!!!!!!

So quit pretending anyone's version of free market is a free market, any policy the US Government implements is a closed system market that is controlled thereby allowing licensed franchises & monopoly's to exist as so determined!!!!!!! This is all backed by only one thing, and paid for by only one thing. The labor & products produced by these various sectors, not by "CORPORATIONS" but the labor groups and products produced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So there are no taxes paid if there is no labor to produce products that can be exchanged on a market that essentially trades "LABOR" currency is only the proxy item that is traded!!!!!

SO FOR ALL THE REALLY SIMPLETONS, corporations do not pay any taxes at all it's simply a commodity traded that represents the labor or workers!!!!!!!!!!!!! Therein the corporations are allowed to operate as an exchange for the goverment to fund it acitivities but it all comes down to workers production!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO CALLED "JOB CREATORS" are nothing more than a result of economic policy that was orchestrated by government policy that included currency & land originally but that is another story.

SO QUIT ALL THIS TALK AMERICA IS A FREE MARKET, ITS NOT IT IS CAREFULLY REGULATED AND BOTH PARTIES WANT THIS OR WE DON'T HAVE A COUNTRY!!!!!!! SO QUIT PRETENDING ITS JUST THE DEMOCRATS THAT REGULATE!!!! THAT IS STUPID

ANOTHER THING CORPORATIONS ARE A FICTION CREATED BY THE WEALTHY TO CONTROL COMMERCE, THE GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED THIS IDEA FROM THE START BUT IT WASNT A FREE MARKET WHEREBY CERTAIN PEOPLE JUST CREATED THIS SYSTEM IT WAS DESIGNED BY THE WEALTHY FROM THE START.

SO ALL YOU FREE MARKET FLAKES NEED TO LAY OFF THIS POINT OF FREE MARKET, IT DOESNT EXIST NOR HAS IT EVER EXISTED IN HISTORY

The taliban are the ones provoking these riots and attacks – they want this violence. And the republicans want to play into their hands? The GOP would rather use their fists for this argument, or just pull out which may as well be the same thing, since it would increase the Taliban's power.

Diplomacy is all about using your big boy words.

They do everything in their power, including crap like yours, because they are racist and ignorant. I think you are projecting to Dems what is always known about Republicans – they world is having big problems to they attack women's rights. They start illegal and immoral wars so their buddies like Halliburton make obscene profits and then try to lay blame for a budget that their guy never added the trillions that he spent on useless wars to – get real. Nobody believes you anyway. Pres. Obama has been the best national security president for a very long time and he got Osama while still maintaining to the world a deep respect for diversity. The Republicans cannot even accept the diversity of people in America but hate everyone who is not just like them – white, old and ignorant without a clue as how to think for themselves.

Hillary is carrying Obama's water for him. Rhetoric is a two way tsreet and she knows it. She make me sick to my stomach. I won't listen to one more word from her. She lost my respect. I have no problem with the president apologizing for the burning of the Qurans. It was an accident and he acknowledged it and it showed due diligence on the part of the USA.
The line however stops there! If any Afghanies feel that they have to kill an American because of it then I don't care if we kill them and burn their bodies.
Of course the American military burns bibles all the time and no one seems to be upset about that!

And you can start to understand their just like the Germans that went to Hitlers rallys back in 1930 to 1940 their true believers but don't see the whole picture or don't care!!!!!!!

For instance Hitler would never apologize for anything, imagine it???? Because his whole German superiority persona, he would never apologize for Germany, just like these Republicans make issue about Obama apologizing for an international incident in order to calm local people that have alot of suffering.. THEY SAY IT SHOWS WEAKNESS, HOW ON EARTH DOES APOLOGIZING FOR AN ACCIDENTAL INSULT SHOW WEAKNESS???????????? IT SHOWS STRENGTH, DIGNITY, AND RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I call them as I see them. Democrats attacked Bush on Iraq because he lied. He made up the parts where Iraq was working with Al Queda. He fabricated the evidence to go to war. He blew off a UN vote that apposed the war. Hundreds of thousands of people died for no reason. We lost 5000 of our own. We spent $1,000,000,000,000 for no reason. Those aren't childish attacks. So ebody should have stood up to Hitler in Germany, but they didn't.

At least I have the guts to post as myself unlike you that take on the identity of other people in order to post things that other people would never say thinking you make them look bad. You just come off as a coward.

Yet, in terms of our government and what's legal our war in Iraq was 100% more valid then Mr Nobel Peace Prize winner's attack on Libya. Did you oppose that? Will you oppose us going to war with Iran which seems inevitable at this point? Of course you won't. You'll sit there and cheerlead like a good hypocritical partisan hack. You are a complete idiot thinking there is a clear "good guy" and a clear "bad guy" when both sides waste our taxes and send our youth to die in useless wars (wars that Senator Obama vote in favor of). I should know I've been one for 45 years of my life, but recently I've made it past the point the indoctrination intends and have woke up!!!!!!! lol it's kinda funny to look back and know I was being manipulated by a political system..... If one can imagine Hitler's Germany whereby HItler constantly spoke of German superiority to all the inferior races as justification to implement his policies that were clearly as history has shown unfair for his "privileged" class at the time the "GERMAN PEOPLE" NOW TAKE THAT ONE STEP FORWARD WHEREBY WE'VE HAD A PARTY INSTITUTE THE SAME POLITICAL PARTY IN AMERICA UNDER DEMOCRACY!!!!!!! NOW YOUR GETTING CLOSE TO UNDERSTANDING REPUBLICANS!!!!!!!!!

BUT KEEP IN MIND MOST OF THE REPUBICANS ARE JUST LIKE THE GERMANS OF HITLERS ERA, THEY DON'T REALLY SEE BEHIND THE POLICY'S AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON!!!!!! BUT THEY CLING TO THEIR SUPREME FUROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!!!!!!

Republicans are indoctrinated into a system of control from a young age, as they grow they learn that supporting that policy will continue to their lifestyle so they continue supporting it. More complicated really, but in the end it's a combination of indoctrination, greed, selfishness, and worst of all a false sense of superiority to all others.

Joe, I have been an Independent since the 1970s. The real names are not Den and Rep but progressive and conservative, but baggage gets attached over time. Because population grows there is constant pressure leftward, and science also pushes leftward in that it changes things. For example, science extends life expectancy, meaning even more demand. And it improves instant communication for those who will use it. I would say it is good there is a 'conservative' element to always ride the brakes, so no-one gets giddy; but in the end our grand experiment on earth must move left, or wither.

Democrats are indoctrinated into a system of control from a young age, as they grow they learn that supporting that policy will continue to their lifestyle so they continue supporting it. More complicated really, but in the end it's a combination of indoctrination, greed, selfishness, and worst of all a false sense of superiority to all others.

But once they locket ALL the facts and decide they want to take responsibility for their own actions, the become Republicans or Libertarians.

Thanks for the lesson in Foreign Governmental Affairs policy, simpleton.... America has a huge State Department along with all types of think tanks that determine based on situation what is best. WE DON'T NEED LIMBAUGH THE "PILL HEAD" telling everyone what a patriot is, or who should do what when it comes to international affairs!!!!!!!!!

If we made a mistake it is standard diplomatic policy for a statement to be issued, it's call Foreign Affairs. President Bush apologized for many many issues in Iraq & Afghanistan while in office!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just no one was stupid enough to complain about it until now!!!!!

I wish I was as creative and articulate as H.L. Mencken, but I'm not. Nevertheless, I will add to your assessment by quoting him:

"For every complex problem, there's a simple solution. And it's wrong."

The problem is that far too many Americans either can not or will not do their own thinking. They reach a simple(minded) conclusion about something and don't deviate from it. They just repeat it ad nauseum. But there's really no such thing as a conclusion. It's just the place where a person decides to stop thinking.

Are Republicans idiots or were they just born stupid? When Bush was president and did a host of tangibly harmful things to our country, complaints from liberals always elicited the same response from Republicans: We were unpatriotic to criticize our president. It's "just a little" hypocritical for those same people to now be criticizing Obama for doing what is the right thing by any decent measure. Our actions are our responsibilities and we absolutely need to own up to them if we are to be respected around the world. I'm proud of our president for having the courage to do the right thing. Only the weak believe that having the courage to own up to your responsibilities is a sign of weakness.

America has become the tyrants through our broken "DOMESTIC & FOREIGN POLICY'S" that call for wars by proxy to dominate regions. HAS ANYONE REALIZED CHINA HAS DONE IT ALL BY THEIR SELF WITHOUT ANY WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHILE WE ARE CONSTANTLY FIGHTING SOMMEONE FOR NOTHING!!!!!

America has 1000% more crime, murders, rape, child molestations, assaults, and robbery's than the entire world combined!!!!!!!! What on earth is your minds??? America has 4 million people in prison today with countless millions on probation or serving some type of parole, how on earth do American's talk about acting civilized???????

All the troops in Afghanistan are there under a United Nations mandate and control. If anoyone wants to apologize it should be the President of the United Nations – not Obama. Obama should say nothing since whatever he states is not going to change or stop anything anyway. As not being helpful to the war effort and troop safety – well Obama giving pull-out dates and announcing military cuts during a war seem like a much bigger problem to me.

The whole premise of trickle down was nothing new, it was just given a new name with controls put into the institutions ton control lending fiscal policy while providing a free market to those with land or fiscal advantage but one key point. It predetermined ones opportunity based on one's position in society in accordance with one's family political dynasty!!!!!!!!!!!

Why on earth do you think America keeps developing these political families that everyone related seems to dominate a sector??????????????? Look at any sector in America and you will find a series of families dominating the particular business sector!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Actors all in the family
Movie production all in the family
Politics very much all in the family (Mayors, Council members, Govenors, President. Attorney General)
Oil workers All in the family
    Policemen All in the family
    Dentists All in the family
    Doctors All in the family

what we are forgetting here is that that quran Bibles were altered and things were written in them that misrepresented what Muhammad stated. If a Bible has been altered and in the message on the pages state Jesus tells us to kill Muslim in order to be saved, then that Bible should be burned. THe Qurans were altered by Extremist and they were altered that is why they were burned. The President only apologized to extend a friendship hand to the President of Afghanistan. I don't think the Qurans were burned to send Muslims a message.

What kind of idiot would write this remark? Obama has taken out more terrorist in three years than Bush did in eight years. If was Bush and not Obama who lied like the dog he was to get us into the war in Iraq. It was Reagan who had the CIA train the Taliban. Obama got our troops out of harm's way in Iraq. This vet doesn't have the intelligence to know this? Man, you are an complete embarrassment to all vets who ever wore a uniform. Do you understand me? Am I making myself perfectly clear?

Calling Bush a criminal was a national issue. Criticizing the President for an apology designed to decrease tensions that puts American soldiers lives at risk is an international matter. I have come to expect a certain amount of hypocrisy from both sides of the aisle, but to deliberately defend statements made for political gain that are reasonably calculated to continue violence against American troops is beyond shameful.

The signals being sent by the republican candidates are being watched all over the world. The only signal that has any real meaning will be the election results. We don't have to all hate each other. I'd be shocked and disappointed if any of the current republican wannabees were elected, but I would learn to live with it, just like we all learned to live with GW Bush for eight years of incredible blundering.

The major problem is that the primaries will not be settled until the GOP convention in August and then the General election will not be settled until 11/2012. Before then, these GOP candidates can do a lot of harm by encouraging folks in other countries to think that if they wait until 1/2013, our foreign policy will change.

If we stop voting to support the Republicans they will all be replaced in hopes new faces will bring about new leadership!!!!!!!! If Republicans continue to support a party that has disintegrated into such corruption then we deserve what we get!!!!!!! WE HAVE THE POWER, BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO STOP SUPPORTING THEM OVER MINOR DIFFERENCES WITH DEMOCRATS!!!!!

THAT IS THE PROBLEM, THE REPUBLICAN PARTY STATES BILL CLINTON WILL DESTROY AMERICA, YET AMERICA DOES BETTER DURING CLINTON THAN ANYTIME IN 40 YEARS. STILL WE VOTE REPUBLICAN, NOW THEY POSTURE AGAINST EVERYTHING PRES OBAMA DOES EVEN IF IT DIVIDES AMERICA AND HURTS OUR TROOPS IN THE FIELD......

SUPPORT AMERICA REPUBLICANS VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE, THEY'VE NEVER ONCE ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING, IT'S ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT!!!!!
QUIT THROWING YOUR VOTE AWAY BY VOTING FOR A PARTY YOU'VE BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH JUST BECAUSE OF FEAR TACTICS!!!!!!!!!

IT'S RIDICULOUS, REGARDLESS OF PRES OBAMA'S POLICY'S AMERICA WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE GROWTH SO WHAT IF WE FUND HEALTH CARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY IT ALL GOES BACK INTO THE ECONOMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since they realized the power that they have – (write laws and exclude themselves)(give themselves unearned raises and perks)(ignore the 23rd Amendment where it says they CANNOT make laws for the people that they themselves are immune from) – 'We the people" have become subjects to THE CONGRESS. We need someone who has the guts to CHANGE (sound familiar) that and we have not found him anywhere. Short of a peaceful takeover which you know THE CONGRESS would never let happen (they would send the army we pay for after us) I see no HOPE (sound familiar) in the near future. Sorry.

Does this sound familiar to you?

Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was an ardent nationalist and prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last 7 years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -
Because I was not a Jew.

If you change Jews for liberals conservatives are three for three. Conservatives, like most cowards, see civility as a weakness. They see liberals as weak because we have let them lie and attacks with out accountability. What did appeasement do? Did the Nazis become nicer? You ad better stand up to these freaks before they have a final solution to the liberal problem.

George Soros grow up under Nazi rule. He can see what conservatives are. He has used his wealthy to count the lies in the conservative media. This is why the liars in the conservative media fear him. They need more to fear.

Instead say to Afghanistan "oops, oh well, we'll print up a box load of Qurans and send them to you. Deal with it" then hear that about five or six troops got killed and unknown number of civilians? Would you then feel the need to go send in some cruise missiles. Then what? "nuculars"?

Actually he required that insurance companies provide reproductive health care to women that work for religious institutions (hospitals, universities, etc.). Did it occur to any of you that contraception is still not 100% guaranteed. If it is meant for you to get pregnant, you will in spite of. Come out of the middle ages people. In this economy, who but the very wealthy can afford a house full of children? All you are going to do by fighting this issue is make the welfare rolls grow. SURE there were some bitches and gripes along the way, but minor. Today its not that way at all. Now that the corporations have taken over the congress there's UNUSUALLY widespread disorder. I absolutely mostly blame the conservatives for this public insult. I watched with bewilderment as Bob Barr(Repub) attached a sign on his car BEFORE the new President even took office- it read "IMPEACH OBAMA". Now I ask you- "is this not an insult to our political system and the majority of the electorate".....BUT not to the Repub. Abe Lincoln described Burnside as reminding him of a goose that had been banged over the head and was staggering around in crazy circles. I am generally supportive of Secretary Clinton, precisely because I think she presents a strong and resolute posture for the U.S. However, on this point she is missing the point. Apologizing to the Afghan's at the precise moment they are killing our personnel comes across as weakness. Weakness ALWAYS invites attack. This is basic human nature, not politics.

We understand. Conservatives hate American values and they lack the two attributes to understand that it takes a real man to apologize. I feel sorry that you were a victim of poor parenting and of schools, churches and communities that failed miserably at instilling basic values in you. It's a shame our nation will suffer for these transgressions.

I love America. As a foreign observe of American politics and culture,, I'm appalled by some of the comments I read. Your president, Barack Obama, is perhaps, as history will judge, a sane and smart president considering the state of the world, and the America he inherited. I have no reason to believe that the sane majority portion of America will re-elect him. What seems to jolt me especially in this current election primary season, in fact shock me, is how previously I over-rated the intelligence of American politicians. When I listen to the mixed salad of republican "politicians" viewing for your presidency, I only hear–to put in blantantly-stupid politics or stupid poltiicians. Even among us the so-called "uncivilized world", once you have grieved another (as Afghans feel they have been), the moral man inside us calls for a swift apology. This in no way means kow-towing to an "opponent" or acquiescing to "radiscal Islam". If anything, your Christian president is being true to the bible scriptural teaching of seeking forgiveness from those one inadvertently offends. But again, one often appriciates the normal (such as Obama's genuine apology) by observing the completely abnormal posturing of those bent on exiting him from the White House. Or from those republican politicians parading "Christianity" in public yet when arraigned against your president, seem divorced from scriptural teachings for the sake of closet racism, corporate interests, and the so-called moral right wing. The stock price of Ignorance seems to be at its highest, and the republicans are pushing it, and the parochial so-called "right wing" is shoving for shares. We all must weep for this segment of America!

There is no cooperation. It's my way otr the highway. While I mostly blame the GOP for this, the dems are not blameless. It's sad. We don't discuss issues anymore. It's all extremeism and hyperbole.

Let me take time to apologize for a nation with so many uneducated ignorant conservatives whose parents, schools, churches and communities fail to teach values or moral to. This conservative culture as restored American exceptionism by replacing "can do" with "we are doomed" and "it will never work." These people are an embarrassment to this nation, our ancestors and all this nation was built upon. I never though I would witness idiots conned into believing Obama was born in Kenya, followed Islam Where once Americans revered and valued education, conservatives worship being ignorant. Learn this lesson: Just because you are nice to someone does not mean they will not turn around and shoot you in the face because you do not believe what they believe. Beware of irrational people...they will kill you. Annialation is the only remedy to fanaticism, but who has the guts to do it. You've got to be kidding. And what exactly did she think the apology was...not political? Ms. Clinton and Mr. Obama best listen to what America has to say about apologizing to a country that we have given billions of dollars to in aid, provided soldiers in an effort to help stabilize their country and oust the Taliban. American's have given their lives in this effort, yet Afghans go to pieces over the burning of books. Ms. Clinton, you certainly do not represent me or my opinions. Get over yourself.

I think that many of the "conservatives" posting here are misunderstanding the message Ms Clinton presented. The message was simple and addressed to the other potential presidents: "We pissed off people in Afghanistan inadvertently, and the president apologized because it was not intentional." What's wrong with apologizing for something you did not mean to do? Most people who live in polite society do this everyday.

On the other hand, she has asked the other candidates running for president to shut up. Their rhetoric and hate speech against the country we are trying to stabilize will only enflame radical elements throughout Afghanistan and keep our service members there, risking their lives. She did not ask us, the common American citizen,to keep our mouths shut, just those who, by the presumption of the position they for which they run, should be showing a modicum of understanding of foreign policy. If it was a Bible that had ACCIDENTALLY been burned on a base in the middle of Kansas, do you still think an apology would be unnecessary?

Bibles were burned by American troops and I haven't found an article yet where Obama apologized. I certainly could be wrong, so if you have a link, I'd appreciate it. This whole apology is pure politics between countries, so American politicians (who are supposed to represent the American people) are entitled to weigh in on the apology. Perhaps if the Afghan people had registered a strong indignation through their politicians and Mr. Obama then apologized, the apology might have been more acceptable to the American public. But when Afghans take to the streets rioting, killing people (including American's) and destroying property, then I get angry with Obama and the Afghan people. Pardon me for my indignation.

      February 26, 2012 at 1:17 pm | Reply
      • Boscoe

You are right, this apology is pure politics. . .or to use a synonym, pure DIPLOMACY. Ms. Clinton is trying to get the Afghan people to calm down and listen to the voice of reason, or, to put this simply, she is trying to protect our troops by using the skill she has. . .DIPLOMACY. Meanwhile, our servicemembers on the ground will continue to do what they do best: fight to defend our interests; however, this means exposing them to danger. These brave men and women are already living in a dangerous situation, a situation that was made more dangerous with a simple inadvertent incineration, that may or may not get better through words, but words after actions have ended every war in the common era. So, given the choice between uttering a few words to attempt to diffuse a dangerous situation, or sending American men and women into more combat situations and increased danger, what is the best way to proceed?

        February 26, 2012 at 1:52 pm |

Sometimes, when you apologize to insane people you inadvertently give them a ticket for revenge.
In regard to Bibles: most Christians, while they would be disappointed, would understand accidents happen and would not kill innocent people in retaliation. HUGE difference between Al lah followers and followers of the One True GOD.

Sir, sometimes when people watch Faux news constantly they begin to actually believe their re-write of history. Bush was the first US President in the history of our republic to attack another country without warning and with no provocation. Think this over a minute – that is what we demonized about the Japanese. Prior to Bush this would have been unthinkable. His 'part D' Medicare prescription program put Medicare over the edge and it absolutely was NOT funded in any way (read DEBT). His wars were not just unfunded, they were DE-FUNDED with tax cuts directed to the wealthy – so that everyone else could pay for it. His deregulation, in the name of Conservative free market almost bankrupted the Country and destroyed our currency. Bush was they guy that stated that 'everyone' should own a home. And you think he was unfairly criticized. People with this misguided view need help.

      • Why Use Facts

        dt –

What country did we attack without warning? We can debate the provocation part of the question until we are both blue in the face and you still won't admit that you are wrong, but there is NO debating that both Iraq and Afghanistan had plenty of warning. Both countries were also told what they could do to prevent attacks.

The KKK in Virginia made it known not to vote for Hillary in 2008. They said, vote for anybody but her, even a dog, but not her. They did not want a woman to be president. Go figure! Don't understand the mentality.

Should Obama have apologized? Yes, it was the right thing to do, did you democrats give Bush a hard time any and every time he did something? YES YOU DID. Your all a bunch of hypocrites, you say one thing and do another. The next time a Republican is elected I hope all you PC people remember your words from the past, which I know you won't...

Bush's policies should have been criticized. They resulted in 2 wars and an unprecedented unified hatred of this country by other nations and a disastrous financial crisis. What of Obama's policies or actions can you point to that is doing harm like that? The financial picture is improving, and he has shown diplomacy and poise in handling very sticky situations (like Libya) without getting us drawn into another expensive war. I'm not saying he's perfect, because he isn't, and you can second-guess his diplomatic approach all you want, but it's hard to argue with success.

Good post. All wars happened during republicans holding the office, they first drive the country into Mess and leave it for democrats to improve. And when a change is being seen, you start blaming success. For every little steps Obama takes, you have numerous opponents, how anyone can show you right direction. You cannot set right yor own personal life in 4 years, how do you expect to turn around the world single handed....come on you republicans, be realistic !

I voted for Bush twice and that is where my stupidity ends. He was the worst President of our lifetime. Just because he is a Republican and Obama is a Democrat doesn't mean that you can't see the truth. I am disgusted with this far right turn that our party has taken. Pretty sad when the closest thing we have to a Reagan Republican is a Democrat.

And no, Bush was not the worst in our lifetime.

Great post – DNCPARTYOFHYPOCRITES, I love it!

      Democrats suffer from selective amnesia.
They FORGOT to present a budget for 4 years
They FORGOT to pass one single Republican Bill from 2005 – 2010 [then said the [R] did NOTHING!
Reid FORGOT to preset the ELEVEN Bills [Rep] that never saw daylight
They FORGOT to do anything during the debt ceiling fiasco
They FORGOT to tell the truth about the Republicans being FAR from the party of NO.

Being a diplomat is not the same as being a politician. She is THE top diplomat we have and making potentially inflammatory statements such as these will put the US in even greater danger. The language of diplomacy is far more "genteel" and muted than what you and I can say. Hillary cannot afford to be a politician in the position she is in in times such as these. She's had to work her arse off to gain the respect that she has from the international community – especially in countries such as Afghanistan where the position of women is still lower than dirt. Coming into a country stating the equivalent of 'a woman needs to burn her bra to gain respect' will do nothing to make America safer and to keep the respect that she has worked so hard to attain. For those of you who think she's hypocritical let me state this: Hillary has a higher public opinion rating than her boss. Bush's secretary of state did not have anywhere near the respect that Hillary has right now.

And of course she's very consistent in her views??????? A year ago she was telling Assad on world TV to get the hell out. NOW she's apparently trying to undermine the rebels???????

How come there were only 2 or 3 problems in the Middle East before Obama and Clinton got involved and caused several more decades of bloodshed and hate with their criminally insane foreign policies and totaal lack of historical or political know-how.

YouBetcha, to answer your question: you likely were not reading the news. Israel had a brief and destructive war with Lebannon over the death of 2 israeli soldiers. There was another major war that happened sometime around 2003 in the middle east. It involved something about WMD's, then liberation of an oppressed people who had not risen up for themselves, then just became an occupation. I do not remember what that one was called. There was also a huge increase in suicide bombings in Israel to which GW's proposal was to create 2 separate states: Israel and an aggressive Palestine on its border. This turned out to be a complete deal-breaker in the peace talks that dd not happen.

A better question to ask would be "why do people of the middle east feel they can attempt an overthrow of some of these tyrannical regimes?" The answer to that is simple: High speed internet and the increase in mobile phones with cameras has allowed small groups of dissenters to band together and share information to organize into these revolutionary movements for freedom. I applaud this administration for its timing in choosing which revolutions will succeed and who to help as this long due march to world-wide democracy unfolds.

News flash for Hillary. While she is 'peeling support away from the illigitimate Syrian regime', she should consider what would happen to the, by her terms, legitimate Karzai government, if the US support propping him up is withdrawn. Makes you wonder who is she deceiving in regards general principles and interpretation – as this dicotomy would suggest.

More have died since Obama apologized so clearly his apology was not helpful and only served to make matters worse. Clinton's concern is that people are actually speaking out about the pathetic response of the Obama administration to Muslim fanatics.I suspect that polling by the Obama campaign shows that many Americans both inside and outside of the military agree with Newt Gingrich not Barack Obama.Obama apologizes over a few burned books, yet there has still been no apology from President Karzai for the murders of US troops by Afghan soldiers.Disgusting and disgraceful.

Anyone running for president should have enough sense to realize what they say in today's world is heard around the world. Underminding the President with cheap rhetoric gets Americans killed in Afghanistan. The two officers shot in an area of safety is a prime example. If these Republican candidates are so ignorant as to not be able to appreciate that then the White House is the last place they need to be. From that seat, Diplomacy rules.

The people of Afghanistan [and the other Arab countries] can only function with Dictators telling them what to do. It's been that way for centuries.

For Obama to apologise [AFTER the General had already done so] was -to the Afghans , a sign of weakness. That weakness empowered them to give full rein to their anger.

After his apology – the Afghans responded by calling him "The Black Dog" – Dog being a really huge Muslim insult.

Any American calling Obama weak will have NO impact on the Afghans because the way they have reacted to his apology shows that they KNOW he is weak.

There are some comments here indicating that demo's did the same sort of things during the Bush admin. True that Bush and his admin were recipients of withering criticism, though I can't recall any instance in which American combat troops were murdered because of that. The glaring divide betwixt criticism from the right and left consists of the sheer number of lies and distortions from the right about Obama. The left had no need to lie or distort with Bush. He and his admin created daily fodder for that consisting of actual facts. Sad thing about this is that our country remains seriously damaged by the actions of the Bush administration.
