Clinton issues warnings on Afghanistan, Syria

Criticism of President Barack Obama's apology for the burning of Qurans in Afghanistanis not helpful, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday in a wide-ranging interview with CNN.
"I find it somewhat troubling that our politics would enflame such a dangerous situation in Afghanistan," Clinton said of the complaints by Republican presidential candidates and some experts about Obama's apology.
Obama apologized Thursday in a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Qurans, which he called "inadvertent" and an "error."
"It was the right thing to do to have our president on record as saying this was not intentional, we deeply regret it," Clinton said.
At least four American troops have been killed in apparent revenge attacks in the past week, and dozens of Afghans have been killed or wounded in protests about the incident.
"We are hoping that voices inside Afghanistan will join that of President Karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation," Clinton said. "It is out of hand and it needs to stop."
Clinton also said diplomatic efforts were under way to peel away support from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
"We have a lot of contacts, as do other countries - a lot of sources within the Syrian government and the business community and minority communities - and our message is the same to all of them: 'You cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it is going to fall,'" she said.
But she said the Syrian National Council was not yet the kind of united opposition movement that toppled Moammar Gadhafi with international help in Libya last year.
The Libyan opposition base in the city of Benghazi gave the international community "an address" to deal with.
"We don't have that in Syria," she said. "The Syrian National Council is doing the best it can but obviously it is not yet a united opposition."
Clinton also defended telling an audience in Tunisia Saturday that Obama would be re-elected.
"I was asked whether the comments in the primary campaign, some of which have been quite inflammatory, represented America," she said, adding that they did not necessarily. "I represent America."
As America's top diplomat, Clinton would not normally make political statements to a foreign audience.
"Probably my enthusiasm for the president got a little out of hand," Clinton said with a laugh.
But she said her comments were appropriate.
"I know what happens in campaigns. I've been there, done that, and I know that things are said that are not going to be put into practice or policy," she said. "I did think I needed to point that out to the audience."
Clinton ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, losing out to Obama.

Pakistan would be supporting both sides and paying the price for the games they are playing too. The message was simple and addressed to the other potential presidents: "We pissed off people in Afghanistan inadvertently, and the president apologized because it was not intentional." What's wrong with apologizing for something you did not mean to do? Most people who live in polite society do this everyday.
On the other hand, she has asked the other candidates running for president to shut up. Their rhetoric and hate speech against the country we are trying to stabilize will only enflame radical elements throughout Afghanistan and keep our service members there, risking their lives. This whole apology is pure politics between countries, so American politicians (who are supposed to represent the American people) are entitled to weigh in on the apology. Perhaps if the Afghan people had registered a strong indignation through their politicians and Mr. Obama then apologized, the apology might have been more acceptable to the American public. But when Afghans take to the streets rioting, killing people (including American's) and destroying property, then I get angry with Obama and the Afghan people. Pardon me for my indignation.

So, given the choice between uttering a few words to attempt to diffuse a dangerous situation, or sending American men and women into more combat situations and increased danger, what is the best way to proceed?

Bush's policies should have been criticized. They resulted in 2 wars and an unprecedented unified hatred of this country by other nations and a disastrous financial crisis. What of Obama's policies or actions can you point to that is doing harm like that? The financial picture is improving, and he has shown diplomacy and poise in handling very sticky situations (like Libya) without getting us drawn into another expensive war. I'm not saying he's perfect, because he isn't, and you can second-guess his diplomatic approach all you want, but it's hard to argue with success.
Good post. All wars happened during republicans holding the office, they first drive the country into Mess and leave it for democrats to improve. And when a change is being seen, you start blaming success. For every little steps Obama takes, you have numerous opponents, how anyone can show you right direction. You cannot set right yor own personal life in 4 years, how do you expect to turn around the world single handed....come on you republicans, be realistic !

I voted for Bush twice and that is where my stupidity ends. He was the worst President of our lifetime. Being a diplomat is not the same as being a politician. She is THE top diplomat we have and making potentially inflammatory statements such as these will put the US in even greater danger. The language of diplomacy is far more "genteel" and muted than what you and I can say. Hillary cannot afford to be a politician in the position she is in in times such as these. She's had to work her arse off to gain the respect that she has from the international community – especially in countries such as Afghanistan where the position of women is still lower than dirt. Coming into a country stating the equivalent of 'a woman needs to burn her bra to gain respect' will do nothing to make America safer and to keep the respect that she has worked so hard to attain. For those of you who think she's hypocritical let me state this: Hillary has a higher public opinion rating than her boss. Bush's secretary of state did not have anywhere near the respect that Hillary has right now.

YouBetcha, to answer your question: you likely were not reading the news. Israel had a brief and destructive war with Lebannon over the death of 2 israeli soldiers. There was another major war that happened sometime around 2003 in the middle east. It involved something about WMD's, then liberation of an oppressed people who had not risen up for themselves, then just became an occupation. I do not remember what that one was called. There was also a huge increase in suicide bombings in Israel to which GW's proposal was to create 2 separate states: Israel and an aggressive Palestine on its border. This turned out to be a complete deal-breaker in the peace talks that dd not happen.
A better question to ask would be "why do people of the middle east feel they can attempt an overthrow of some of these tyrannical regimes?" The answer to that is simple: High speed internet and the increase in mobile phones with cameras has allowed small groups of dissenters to band together and share information to organize into these revolutionary movements for freedom. I applaud this administration for its timing in choosing which revolutions will succeed and who to help as this long due march to world-wide democracy unfolds.
News flash for Hillary. While she is 'peeling support away from the illigitimate Syrian regime', she should consider what would happen to the, by her terms, legitimate Karzai government, if the US support propping him up is withdrawn. For Obama to apologise [AFTER the General had already done so] was -to the Afghans , a sign of weakness. That weakness empowered them to give full rein to their anger.

Any American calling Obama weak will have NO impact on the Afghans because the way they have reacted to his apology shows that they KNOW he is weak.
There are some comments here indicating that demo's did the same sort of things during the Bush admin. True that Bush and his admin were recipients of withering criticism, though I can't recall any instance in which American combat troops were murdered because of that. The glaring divide betwixt criticism from the right and left consists of the sheer number of lies and distortions from the right about Obama. The left had no need to lie or distort with Bush. He and his admin created daily fodder for that consisting of actual facts. Sad thing about this is that our country remains seriously damaged by the actions of the Bush administration.
