Clinton issues warnings on Afghanistan, Syria

Criticism of President Barack Obama's apology for the burning of Qurans in Afghanistanis not helpful, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday in a wide-ranging interview with CNN.
"I find it somewhat troubling that our politics would enflame such a dangerous situation in Afghanistan," Clinton said of the complaints by Republican presidential candidates and some experts about Obama's apology.
Obama apologized Thursday in a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Qurans, which he called "inadvertent" and an "error."
"It was the right thing to do to have our president on record as saying this was not intentional, we deeply regret it," Clinton said.
At least four American troops have been killed in apparent revenge attacks in the past week, and dozens of Afghans have been killed or wounded in protests about the incident.
"We are hoping that voices inside Afghanistan will join that of President Karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation," Clinton said. "It is out of hand and it needs to stop."
Clinton also said diplomatic efforts were under way to peel away support from Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
"We have a lot of contacts, as do other countries - a lot of sources within the Syrian government and the business community and minority communities - and our message is the same to all of them: 'You cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it is going to fall,'" she said.
But she said the Syrian National Council was not yet the kind of united opposition movement that toppled Moammar Gadhafi with international help in Libya last year.
The Libyan opposition base in the city of Benghazi gave the international community "an address" to deal with.
"We don't have that in Syria," she said. "The Syrian National Council is doing the best it can but obviously it is not yet a united opposition."
Clinton also defended telling an audience in Tunisia Saturday that Obama would be re-elected.
"I was asked whether the comments in the primary campaign, some of which have been quite inflammatory, represented America," she said, adding that they did not necessarily. "I represent America."
As America's top diplomat, Clinton would not normally make political statements to a foreign audience.
"Probably my enthusiasm for the president got a little out of hand," Clinton said with a laugh.
But she said her comments were appropriate.
"I know what happens in campaigns. I've been there, done that, and I know that things are said that are not going to be put into practice or policy," she said. "I did think I needed to point that out to the audience."
Clinton ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, losing out to Obama.

One cannot equate the flag of the United States with a holy religious book. The troops may have made a big mistake that caused anger and and the President was correct to apologize for that action. Sometimes apologies are not accepted but nevertheless, the correct response to any wrongful action is an apology.

The timeline of events shows that it was Obama's apology, not the original burning, nor criticism of the apology that got the attention of the mobs and built up the protests.
Those books were burned because they had been defaced by the detainees with extremist messages and apparently also coded communication. Burning them was not an accident, not a mistake, and nothing to apologist for. Those who pretend burning those books is the reason they hate us actually hated us anyway. The question was only whether violently demonstrating that hatred would help or hurt their cause. Obama made it clear that the violence against us would help them.

Its one thing to love this country and the freedoms it protects for its citizens, it's another to worship it. The USA, like any other human-created institution, is fallible. It makes mistakes. And when it does, it is appropriate to apologize for them. This incident with the burning of Qurans is one such mistake. Yes, the extremists reaction has been inhuman (the recent killing of several of our soldiers in response), but we should not lower ourselves to their level by refusing to take responsibility for what was a mistake on our part. For all of its flaws, the USA still represents a force of good in the world, and we should not tarnish our own reputation and our cause by refusing to apologize for our mistakes.

I find it troubling when I hear the statement that the President should demand an apology first. This is like little kids (or adult morons) when confronted, rebutting "well you did so and so). Adam and Eve did the same thing, each blaming the other. Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent. It didn't help any of them and neither does not being adult enough to issue an apology when wrong...no matter if the other party responds in kind or not. Wrong is wrong no matter what the other person did. If you or a country can't say something was wrong without receiving in kind yours will be a bitter path.
There was no reason to give an apology nor to demand one. But it would be silly to ask them to apologize. The US has gone to extremes to respect Islam in all its actions in Islamic countries. But that has to have limits. Trying to clean up the mess in a country whose own people won't support that is a foolish pursuit. When the Afghan people allowed the Taliban to rule them and the Taliban supported the use of their country as a base against us, Bush very correctly efficiently and inexpensively overthrew the Taliban. Trying to clean up the mess afterward was a big mistake by Bush and has grown into a bigger mistake by Obama. In Iraq there was a real need to clean up the mess left by overthrowing the government (Bush tried and now Obama failed). But in Afghanistan the initial overthrow of the government served the whole purpose. The Afghan people should have been left to clean up their own mess. If they failed to keep the Taliban from returning to power and the Taliban had not learned their lesson about exporting terrorism, the US could have overthrown them again at low cost to us and great cost to the Taliban's supporters. If we did that every few years forever it still wouldn't come close to the cost of trying to clean up the mess for a population that won't try to do that for themselves.

When you were in the military you were taught to respect those the laws and customs where you where stationed and to set an example. The actions of a few soldiers over the past 10 years in an age of camera phones has made that even more important. The Comande rand Chief, like the General that apologized, were doing so on onbehalf of the troops and this country to avoid this sort of thing. You can't be too proud a veteran if you forgot forgot your oath.
As for Hillary- she done a damn good job of keeping us from getting inot another war, and from the U.S. being hit by terrorists in the past 3 years. This is the only President in over 30 years that can say no attack has taken place on his wathch, so back off!
My sons have served in the miltary and one is going to be headed to Afghanistan this year. They are proud service members, too. They understand that the President's apoglogy was correct, in that, that the burning was done without intention to do so. He is trying to save lives and dampen hostilites.

No US interest is served by cleaning up the mess in Afghanistan. We went far beyond our moral obligations by trying to do so.
In Libya, the US liberals were happy to bomb and kill thousands of civilians in order to destroy a popular but oppressive dictatorship and replace it with a less popular and more violently oppressive theocracy. We made a mess overthrowing a stable government and we left the people far worse off than they were before. That was a terrible thing to do for no reason to Libya. But it was the correct thing to do for good reason to the Taliban.
We should leave Afghanistan now. If the Afghan people are foolish enough to let the Taliban or similar group regain power and that group is foolish enough to once again export terrorism, we should do to them what we did to Libya, not what we tried and failed this time to do for Afghanistan.

One thing amongst many that his administration has done that is definitely good: By Jan. 2014 I will be able to bypass the vampire like insurance companies and the overburdened VA health-care system to get actual medical attention, just like millions of others. Also, the GI Bill is great, but it does not come close to helping a person not born into wealth, complete a four year degree program without incurring unimaginable debt. His administrations education initiatives are really a step in the right direction towards allowing people from all socio economic backgrounds to participate in the secondary education system that may help pull us from low ranks of the recognized international education system. A healthy and well educated population is key to a successful society. These are two initiatives that are designed to help with that. How in the world can we, from the middle classes to the low end of the spectrum not understand this? Please, research the policies and guidelines of any system before you draw conclusions on a very complicated situation. Basing your opinions on the typical mindsets of others or misinformation of whatever "news" you listen to is not enough. This was not an insult; I give the spill everyday to at least a few individuals. However, in person it is easier to get them to see the point. Just an observational point, it is becoming less of an occurrence because people are starting to see as a whole what is happening, what has happened, and who is doing what. It takes effort my friend to see. Do not settle on whats being spoon fed to you. Detailed explanations are always needed for simplistic expressions. Just think all that fun and enlightenment for free.

"Weak" is the perception that comes from incompetence. Obama's incompetence spreads from a lack of an international policy, lack of an energy policy, lack of understanding of basic economics, and the constant movement on his "principled" stands.

I just returned from a trip to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong and I can tell you they are big fans of President Obama in those countries. In fact, we had several meetings with companies in those countries and just about everyone we met made comments along the lines of, 'We are just glad, there is a President with a world view and perspective in America'.
Last year, I travelled to several Eastern European nations, Northern Africa and the middle east and the sentiment was very similar – so I am not sure where your perception of the world laughing at us is stemming from. It is inconsistent with my experience.
He does have an international policy – the policy is to engage America in wars, it should not be in to begin with.
He does have an energy policy focused on alternative energy sources (not just gasoline) – part of making the American car industry stronger and helping them build energy efficient cars and electric cars is part of the energy policy. If you are referring to the Keystone Pipeline, in our graduate program, we studied the issue of Keystone and the company in the RFP has several environmental issues / problems, look them up.
He does have a good understanding of economics, his policies have succeeded in getting this country on a path of recovery – ask any economist we've had several quarters of positive GDP growth.

1) The GOP is Pro-Life and is against abortion but is against the healthcare law that gives live and affordable care to millions that previously did not have it.

Not really the same situation. It took almost two years into Iraq before people started to question the operation. Many of Bush's critics during that misplaced conflict were Republicans. One of the greatest republican senators of all time and a war hero, Chuck Hagel from Nebraska, routinely criticized the Bush administration and it's lying about WMD to get us into Iraq. Remember, we were attacked on 9-11-2001 by 19 hijackers, 15 of which were from one country alone, Saudi Arabia. Not one from Iraq. On top of that, removing Saddam, a Sunni dictator in a Shiite majority country made Iran stronger. It liberated the Shia from Iraq who now control the country and are hooking up with their Iranian Shia brothers. The "liberal" press, most democratic politicians and a majority of Americans (including liberals), put their support behind our commander in chief during the entrance into Afghanistan and then in the run-up to the Iraq war and for 2-3 years into (just until Americans learned that there were no WMDs in Iraq – the whole made-up justification for the war). Here are some facts: al Qaeda has been decimated. During the current administration, there has not been one significant attack on U.S. soil or U.S. interests (outside the war zones.) You can't make this claim about the Bush admin. nor the Clinton admin. Obama has done dozens upon dozens of things for this country (if you're a woman, it is now illegal to pay you less than your equally qualified male counterpart.), his bad-arse handling of all things terror is just one of them. So, even if you disagree with his successful healthcare law, you are not being honest if you can't see that his war on terror has been successful.

Any American who cares about the lives of our service men and women should be smart enough not to inflame the citizens of the country we are occupying, whether by burning their sacred texts or by criticizing a leader who apologizes for those who do. The GOP are not patriots, they are opportunists who care more that their donors' defense contracts keep coming in than that our service men and women come home alive.
They're terrified of Israel because they fear it. They're poor and mystical people who easily bow to the suggestion that these world-class equipped super soldiers that occupy their lands with superior technology are functionaries of an evil civilization. It's a mixed bag however. They also bow to a suggestion that this isn't true and welcome their presence because they realize, to some extent, that their generous benefactors of aid funds are not all bad, their tribal militancy has huge flaws too and we do good in their communities by outing terrorists.
Burning Qu'rans enhances the suggestion that we're the bad guys. That does no good for anybody.

The reactions of the people of Afghanistan is a result of systemic indoctrination by their religious leaders. They hold their holy book above all else. Their reactions to the burning of copies of it, whether accidental or not, is comprehensible to most Americans. The fact that an apology was not sufficient and that any loss of life occurred as a result is unacceptable in my opinion.

I do remember who put our troops in Afghanistan. First it was 19 Saudi nationals that perpetrated a horrible act of terrorism on American soil that claimed the lives of a few thousand people, not all of the victims were American though. Then Congress gave the President the power to commit American military power to invade Afghanistan after the Taliban refused to turn over Osama Bin Ladden. So yeah lets not forget that the vote by Congress was what sent US troops into harms way in Afghanistan, because with out that consent the President could have only legally sent Marines in and for no more than ninety days.
You do realize that several of the 19 you speak of are still alive and Afghanistan is the only viale route for Unocol to get the oil and gas pipelines from the Caspian sea to the world markets. fyi
