Does Iran's nuclear announcement spell defiance or desire to talk?

By Elise Labott

Iran's announcement Wednesday about the status of its nuclear program may say more about the defiance of the regime in the face of escalating sanctions than signaling any significant nuclear advances.

Before Wednesday, the question foremost on people's minds was whether the announcement would signal Iran was moving closer toward getting a nuclear weapon, crossing a red line which could force Israel to take a preemptive military strike.

That question got a lot of eye-rolling post-announcement.

"Israel was expecting a major announcement," said Fred Fleitz, managing editor of the intelligence forecasting service and a former nonproliferation official under President George W. Bush. "This is it? Israel is not going to be worried about this. But it does suggest they aren't willing to change and it's certainly not going to encourage anyone to negotiate with them."

But negotiations could be the name of the game. Just as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was placing fuel rods into Tehran's research reactor to great fanfare, the regime was sending a letter to European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton about resuming nuclear talks with world powers. Coincidence? Unlikely.

Ahmadinejad's show may have merely been staged for public consumption, designed to wrap the regime in a nuclear flag and rally them in the face of crippling sanctions. Iran's nuclear program is still an issue of national pride and one rare point of consensus among Iran's fractured regime, which Ahmadinejad could use to his advantage in next month's parliamentary elections.

Or it could, as some experts believe, be meant to suggest that Iran is willing to negotiate with the West about its nuclear program.

Tough sanctions on the regime have begun to trickle down to the Iranian people, and the suffering is sure to intensify once curbs against Iranian oil exports take effect in June. By responding to an invitation for talks from so-called P5 Plus 1 (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany) on the same day it declares nuclear advances, Tehran may be saying it expects to come to the table from a position of strength.

But that might be wishful thinking on the regime's part. The announcement fell flat in Washington, with State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland declared it "not terribly impressive."

Simply put, the nuclear revelations didn't live up to the hype. Tehran's claims that it had inserted its domestically produced fuel rods in its nuclear reactor and that it had a "new generation" of centrifuges at its Natanz facility capable of more rapidly enriching uranium were neither alarming nor surprising, experts say.

Iran had already announced last month it had produced the fuel rods for its Tehran Research Reactor, which is used to make medical isotopes. The reactor, which was running out of fuel, was the subject of a proposed deal between Tehran and the P5 plus 1 powers in which a Western country would provide fuel for the reactor in exchange for Iran giving up a majority of its low-enriched uranium stockpile. Even with the fuel rods, the reactor is not considered to be a significant proliferation risk because it uses a small amount of fuel, making it too difficult and time-consuming to provide weapons-grade uranium.

It's unclear whether Iran even has the technical expertise to produce quality fuel rods capable of operating the research reactor or - more important - its Bushehr reactor, which is far more powerful and has the capability to produce weapons-grade uranium. Currently, Russia makes the fuel rods for Bushehr.

What's more, U.S. officials and nonproliferation experts alike have challenged Iran's claims about the capacity and sophistication of its centrifuges. The 9,000 centrifuges spinning at its Natanz plant since 2009 have given Iran's nuclear experts all sorts of trouble. They haven't worked well or produced great amounts of uranium, but they've eaten up precious raw materials that Tehran is finding in increasingly short supply due to ever stronger sanctions. It's unclear whether the new advanced ones they rolled out Wednesday are operable yet or even capable of working.

"None of this is a big technical accomplishment," says David Albright, a leading nuclear expert with the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS).

Tehran, Albright suggests, chose its accomplishments carefully. That Ahmadinejad did not mention the enrichment at the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility, which is built deep into a mountain near the city of Qom and is considered a major flashpoint for Israel, could actually suggest a willingness to be engage in negotiations.

"They could have announced that they plan to install 1,000 advanced centrifuges at Fordow or further increase production of 20 percent enriched uranium," Albright said, referring to Iran's advanced state of enrichment, which has caused international concern. "The fact they didn't is a positive."

But he notes even Iran's modest accomplishments constitute slow progress that the international community can't ignore.

"Iran continues to make progress on its nuclear program" Albright warns. "So the problem of dealing with Iran hasn't been eased by today."

We should be far more concerned about U.S. agression and U.S. incompetence from within. I could care less about Isreal as long as their domestic policy is basically demanding lebensraum just like the Nazis.

I belong with the "jews" i dont have to believe in that religion in order to have my undevoted loyalty and respect to that group of people. I think youll appreciate this I live in the United States probably where you do too.. I'm really not sure how whether or not Random2012 is Jewish is relevant to challenging his very accurate point that some grammar-challenged kid posting hollow threats in all capital letters is not convincing. Random2012 is right, Iran has nothing; it's a cornered dictatorship crumbling from internal non-compliance and trying desperately to appear threatening to the outside world in an effort to maintain its legitimacy. This didn't even work for the USSR in the 1980s, so with modern technology the Ayatollahs don't stand a chance, and with them will go all their funded propaganda mills that angry, ignorant children like Roberto with their volumes of profanity mistake for accurate sources. If Israel were concerned about Iran as a nuclear threat, they would have blown up that reactor already – they have the capacity, and they don't have the luxury of negotiating. The only people acting "scared" of Iran are war-profiteers and their pet politicians in the US who hope we might invade them before they collapse; but Americans are too concerned about the domestic economy for that to sell.

When did this debate become about Jews and Muslims? Stop regurgitating Iran's propaganda, no one is buying it. This debate is about what government can be reasonably trusted with nuclear weapons; and something about the Iranian government's open declarations of hostility against most of the world and written agenda of global fundamentalist revolution make people apprehensive about its qualifications. Israel's government has its share of crooks and scoundrels, like every government, but until it declares global hostility and Orthodox revolution as its written agenda, I won't be convinced it's unsafe with nuclear weapons. If you want more holes punched in your "world against Muslims" argument, there IS a Muslim majority country in the world that has nuclear weapons – it's called Pakistan, and the only time anyone was concerned with it was when it appeared plausible that psychotic Islamist Fundamentalists might gain control of it. Muslims are totally fine, but murder-inciting fundamentalists of any religion are NOT, and no government run by such people deserves nuclear weapons.

I think United states SHOULDNT be concerned about nuclear war. Regardless of whether iran develops capabability or not they are not dumb enough to engage in nuclear war. Nuclear talks by iran is a distraction. They are luring the world especially the United States at least from what it seems like.

    Situation 1

They are developing nuclear weapons so that they can blackmail other countries (Im not sure which ones speciffically) so that these countries will support Irans attempt to enilate Jews in the middle east and ultimately the jewish state . This will only happen IF they develop full capability

    Situation 2

Iran claims to develop nuclear weapons but doesnt in an attempt to get Israel or the US attacking iran giving iran more power in the fact that it will persuade many Iranians to fight for the country of iran. Also, it will create uproar in middleast if israel attacks first. Iran wants israel to attack first so that other countries will join irans effort.

Military and geographical standpoint prediction as follows: Iran will gain strength and support in middle east especially if israel acts FIRST. Syria will back Irans effort. with all the corruption in syria its possible that syria could work together with iran in a military effort to effect Israel. The combination of many terrorist organizations and anti israel countries in middle east will likely lead to a middleeastern non nuclear full scale war on Israel. I have no idea how the major power nations will react but even the United States as close as it is with israel wont sacrafice its own country for israel especially if United states well being is at state. The only country that will keep Israel from coming off the map is United States. I know Britain would like to but theyre not strong enough. And lets be realistic Russia and china are not going to get involved unless US goes first. I hope a proisrael candidate rises to office in this year. If the united states doesnt take action in this issue Israel will fight till it can fight no longer. They always have. and they always will. I hope this is will all work out. But the truth is it wont. Something will impact israel significantaly very soon. As you can see i have placed my ideas and i know they are considered to be a stretch but thats what i believe and i am thankful that i live in a country that lets me do that.

I don't think it's wrong for a country to have nuclear science research. What I do think is wrong, is the stupid rhetoric that goes on between nations, when they make baseless and useless threats to other nations, and most Middle Eastern countries do this. As long as Iran doesn't pursue war with anyone, they should be allowed to continue their work. There is nothing wrong with nuclear research, it's safe, as long as you know what you're doing.

Any time a autocratic theocracy developes resources to build a WMD it is a big deal to the world, not just the region. You complain about the US taking care of its self, but guess what, it is the 21st century. There is a global economy. If there is a nuclear war in any region, our economy will plummet, let alone in the middle east, in which our oil supply would be shut off completely.

The United States has no authority to police the world or to act as an international court. If the sovereign nation of Iran wishes to pursue nuclear energy, that is their decision. If they choose to pursue a weapons program, then negotiations will obviously ensue. The thing to remember is that constructive talks involve more than one party. If the USA is unwilling to engage in discourse, it cannot expect Iran to make appeals to a wall. In terms of the U.N., this puppet institution should simply dissolve. It fails to perform its function.....On another note, it is important to realize that Iran has expressed no desire to construct nuclear weapons nor to acquire them. They are allied with Russia. Furthermore, all this war mongering, all this international's all quite pathetic and resembling of the economic competition that occurs under capitalism. Put simply, it is not sustainable, it's volatile and destructive. I've read a lot of the comments on this page and frankly I am embarrassed. There are far too many rationally ignorant people in the world.

Iran has nothing to gain from attacking Israel with nuclear weapons. "Iran" has never made claims of wanting to blow Israel off the map. There was a statement that Iran made which stated that Israel should allow for universal democracy within its own country, giving suffrage to all, including Palestinians...This would "blow Israel off the map" so to speak if actual democracy was allowed there. Statements about "blowing Israel off the map" have been grossly exaggerated and taken out of context.

What kind of research went into this inane article? Good grief! For example: no one can MAKE uranium. Plutonium, Ms. Labott. Plutonium is the product of enriching uranium. Labott? Lobott? Almost daily, someone in Iran threatens Israel with total destruction, yet we continue to bury our heads in the sands as to their intentions. Iran is ready to be the martyrs of the world in order to usher in the Islamic Mahdi. Get with the game plan, CNN reporters. Quit parroting. Start reporting.

That’s right, the biggest single holder of U.S. government debt is inside the United States and includes the Federal Reserve system and other intragovernmental holdings. Of this number, The Fed's system of banks owns approximately $1.65 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities (as of January 2012), while other U.S. intragovernmental holdings – which include large funds such as the Medicare Trust Fund and the Social Security Trust Fund – hold the rest.

      By Annalyn Censky @CNNMoney May 24, 2011:
A new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research shows 50% of Americans would struggle to come up with $2,000 in a pinch, for example in the event of an unanticipated car or home repair, a large medical bill or legal expenses. (only 25% say they can have 2000$ at anytime).

The Middle East Islamic nations continue to be governed and populated by backwards little people. It always brings a chuckle to watch the citizens be rounded up by the governments to burn flags, and chant death to this country or that. There always alot of tough talk by the Middle East countries, but of course they always get stomped on in any battle. The thing is the US military is always held back from unleashing hell on these backwards countries, but when they start getting bombed, those countries love to invite the foreign media in and start squealing loud 'woa is us'. These Middle East countries are really pitiful in their backward ways.

It's pretty obvious that Iran is simply following North Korea's nuclear weapons negotiating strategy. What is not obvious is whether the effectiveness of that strategy will be diminished by the fact that an Iran with atom bombs is potentially more disruptive to the geopolitical status quo than a North Korea with atom bombs. Another difference is that North Korea is an a part of the world that is, apart from North Korea, politically stable. The same is not true for Iran, which borders Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iran's leadership knows full well that if there were to be a nuclear war with Israel or the U.S. Iran would be decimated. The Israeli-U.S.-E.U. agendas are about much more than any nuclear intentions Iran might have – for Obama and Sarkozy, they may have much to do with their re-electon campaigns and inciting people to vote for them by depicting Iran as a monster which could imperil theri national security which can only be defeated by decided presidential leadership.. Also, for nearly a century there has been the matter of controlling Iran's oil reserves. For Israel and its foreign policy surrogate Washington, D.C. and the U.S. as a whole, the agenda has to do with regional supremacy.

As the article indicates, sanctions being imposed upon Iran likely are causing suffereing for the general public. It is Iraq all over again, where sanctions greatly increased infant mortality and lowered the average age at death considerably. Western politics again involve the end justiifes the means, regardless of the consequences for human beings who are situated in the path of Western/Israeli ambitions and agendas.

Realy don't care about the intentions or desires of Iran. Time the U.S. tells them that they will not have atomic weapons and they can either give up what they have developed so far or it will be taken away from them. If Iran has to be destroyed to do so – so be it. We have "talked" for years – time to draw the line.

There is just one option for a full fledged war. Iran would not let a surgical attack works. So you have to send your troops, in that case the cost of war for you would be 100 times more than Iraq and Afghanistan combined. In short after this war, US will not be a superpower any more and china will replaced it.

It's not that we can't do these things... it's that America is tired of fighting wars, we're tired of fighting... we do not want war with Iran... we just want you morons to get a clue and stop threatening our allies in the middle east and stop building a nuclear weapon when you've already proven you work with Terrorists that want to kill Americans... and you've already threatened to destroy Isreal.... what do you think we're going to do... sit by and watch you obtain a power you could use to kill 100's of thousands of people when you've already proven you're okay with killing yourselves to kill others?

One thing Americans are very good at is very quickly destroying standing armies, navies, air forces, and infrastructure. All you have to do is consider the decades long war between Iran and Iraq (effectively a draw) and compare that to the several weeks it took for the U.S. Forces to crush the same Iraqi forces that Iran could barely dent after several futile years of pitched battle. It's the post nation building and intra-tribal insurgent quagmire that we're not so good at and frankly shouldn't engage to begin with. But crippling the Iranian regime and decimating their forces is a simple as shooting fish in a barrel.

Also I think that Iran's political leadership needs a swift a$s-kicking but not at the expense of Iran's people. And no one say the US can't do it. Remember the Iran Iraq War? You spent 10 years I think fighting to a stalemate and we beat Iran in less than a year.

We did topple the Iraqi regime like it was nothing, i believe that is what the lad was referring to. Afterwards an insurgency formed, one that was supported by jihadists throughout the middle East... that's what we were doing there, eliminating that threat so the Iraqi people could install a Government, that takes time and it isn't always a given that it's going to succeed. We did what we could and allowed them to form a Government, it's up to Iraqis where to go now... In the case of Iran... we'd probably just wipe out the Iranian army.... destroy the Nuclear plants... and probably not even step foot in the country... instead probably just wipe it out from 30,000 feet.

The Kingdom of Israel under Jewish rule was destroyed around 900 BCE. Just how long does a society's "right" to claim a piece of land last after they've lost it due to war? Two thousand years or more? If so, I think all of North and South America, Australia and northern Europe need to be prepared to dismantle their political systems to make way for the peoples they defeated. Countries don't have "rights" ... people do.

Joe, Joe, crazy kid. Here's the thing...if you pick a fight with Israel, you're going to lose. You know it and I know it...we all know it. Their army is better, their air force is better, and their weapons are better. The best you can do is hate from afar. But here's the thing, Joe...Israel has never said Iran should be wiped from the map...the Iranian President has exactly that about Israel, as are you. That' just not done, and to do so when EVERYBODY (well, except maybe you and some delusional Iranian leaders) knows that Israel would wipe the floor with you is just...well...silly.

As for Iran getting nuclear weapons, it just comes down to this...the rest of the world doesn't think you guys are smart enough or wise enough to have them. It's that simple. Israel already has them, and if THEY thought as stupidly as you do, they'd have already wiped YOU off the map. Iran can chant its chants and play its little game, but in the end the rest of the world simply doesn't think you're grown up enough to have nuclear weapons. Maybe down the road when you're a bit more civilized.

I think this announcement was a cover for what they were planning on announcing. Turns of events in syria, Irans giving out large amounts of cash and calling out their gihadist to attack israel (and getting caught red handed) left them in a poor situation to deal with what would have happened if their experiment had been successful , and if they had made the announcement that was planned. Due to pressure and ridicule over making the announcement late and instead denial of an attack they said they would make the day before the actual announcement was replaced with things of little to no value to head off a reaction we all know is inevitable. Iran works hard to bolster image and this made them look like tools. Clearly their strategy is changing and adapting to world opinion and how close they baby step to , and over, the red line.

Sometimes I wonder the possibility of Chinese role over Iranian nuclear research (hitherto ignored by mainstream media) as the Chinese have a record of both gross violation nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) guidelines.

Do remember the revelations made public by Washington Post on basis of notes made by disgraced Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan that China provided Pakistan with a "do-it-yourself" kit and weapons grade uranium for making two nuclear bombs in 1982.

Time and time again Iran has played the rest of the world, and especially the U.S. for fools with talk of negotiation. Anyone who believes this latest development is indication of Iran's willingness to resume talks is falling into that same trap. Iran has no intention of giving up its goal of nuclear weapons. They are too ego driven. All of these announcements and the world's falling for them only further inflates Iran's self importance.

You honestly believe that don't you? The do have the right to peaceful nuclear energy, such as isotopes for treating cancer. That is a given. However, since those research reactors use such a low amount of uranium as fuel, why do you suggest that they are enriching to 20%? In case you haven't done your homework, 20% is the fine red line. It's the most that anyone could ever need for peaceful purposes. If they pass that level, they are definitely working toward building a weapon. This is a very bad thing when the country in question has an active hate toward another country and will do anything to "wipe them off the map." Iran has proven in the past that they support and finance terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Do you honestly think that if they do build a weapon they will not use it? If you believe that, I have some swampland for sale.

How long will the US and Israel use the "wipe Israel off the map" statement. Israel should be wiped off the map because it is occupied land. He did not mean that all Jews should be exterminated but the Israeli state should be un-done. If he wanted to exterminate Jews then he would have started with the Jews residing in Iran.

Why do you believe we envy Iran? Or are impressed with the Atomic research you've accomplished? This is a technology our scientists mastered in the 40's and 50's.... This would be like expecting us to be impressed when you mastered the internal combustion engine while we were putting men on the Moon... it's not impressive... it's just dangerous, because your country is ran but a religious tyrant that strapped bombs to little kids chests and told them to run at armed men and blow themselves up, yet he was too much of a coward to do it himself... seriously... don't you understand? The reason the rest of the world doesn't want you to have a Bomb... is because you've proven in your past that you are willing to kill yourselves to harm others. Nobody who currently owns this technology is willing to use it on someone else because they know they would be retalliated against. Your kind seem to have a death wish.

Unlike your country who start a new war each three years since WWII Iran has not start a war since 1800. Your are just a brain washed ignorant person and I really don't have time to prove to you how much you are wrong in all your judgments. In fact it does not matter what you and your other fellow Americans thinks. Iran has suffered a lot during the last 1000 years (Mongolian invasion, ....) if any of those things was happening to your civilization you were a history by now but we survived and we have started to rebuild our nation and soon we catch up . We have the fastest grow in scientific publication despite all sanctions and I am sure in less than 20 years Iran will be a very advanced country.

Really!? Iran hasn't started a War since 1800... Lets go on a fact check here....
        1816 – Persia invades Afghanistan
        1821 – Persia invades Turkey
1836 – Persia invades afghanistan... AGAIN
1855 – Persia invades afghanistan... AGAIN AGAIN
        More recent conflicts?
1969 – 1970 – disputes over shatt al arab waterway led to Iran arming and supporting a Kurdish uprising in Iraq
1970-1980 – Kurdish rebellion – Lead to the Killing of 10,000 Kurds by Iranian Army and revolutionary guard
1970-1980 – Iran occupied several persian gulf islands claimed by the UAE
1980-present – Iran's proxy war with Israel – Iran openly supports and provides arms to Hamas and Hezbollah to assist them in their guerilla war against Israel
1980's – present – Pejak Kurdish rebellion – Iran is still trying to annihilate the Kurds that want freedom from your oppressive regime
Present – Proxy war with the United states – Iran is providing training, Arms, and cross border bases to anti-American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, that one i saw myself in Iraq, providing insurgents with EFP's to try and take out our heavily armored vehicles.

So much for a Peaceful Iran there Amir!

Clinton: It shows your level of ignorance very well. First of all, Afghanistan was not a country until the late 19th century (1round 1900) it was ruled partly by Iran and partly by Britain. To make its territory secure Iran has done and will do what ever measure it takes. Iran never invaded Iraq (it was Iraqis who invade and Iran defend itself.) Iran fought terrorist groups inside its country which is not counted as a war. UAE is a new country just formed during 70s , those islands were a part of Iran before that country actually be existed.
Iran has never invaded Turkey, again it was a defensive war against Ottoman Turks who killed thousands of people in Iranian Caucasian region. Proxy war is not a war at all, and in fact it is a defensive strategy to make enemy involved in their own boarders.

Revisionist history is not your strong suit.

Turkish-persian war of 1821 was a result of Turk (Ottoman) support of Azerbaijani rebels in Persia.

The latter two Afghan incursions were due to British meddling in the region and Britain actually declared war on them in 1856.

Anything that happened between 1953 and 1979 were with the blessing of the USA since the CIA coup to overthrow the elected government and install the Shah (this was about OIL, after all!)

        Amir –
So let me get this straight, every time you sent armed forces into another country or provided arms in support of rebellion in another country, or in the instance of right now where you're arming Hezbollah and Hamas to attack Israel... or when you're supplying arms and providing bases for insurgents to attack and kill US forces in Iraq and afghanistan..... Those are all just in defense of your country and you're not attacking people? So what you're trying to say is... The reason you have the higher ground here is, in many instances, you don't send your army, you simply support resistance movements and hold proxy wars instead of open conflict? So you think you have a high ground because we invaded iraq instead of paying and supplying someone else to do it like you do? Really? And it's funny that you ignore the UAE's sovereignty and get so mad at us saying we ignore everyone elses sovereignty... and so what if the British were occupying nearby land in Afghanistan, how does that change a thing about sending an Army to attack them? That's a WAR and you said you haven't started one since 1800. You're bending every conflict and saying you didn't start it. And Just because Aghanistan wasn't the country it is today doesn't mean there weren't people living there when you invaded.

Paul – Revisionist History!? lmfao! seriously? Turkey did indeed aid the Azerbaijani rebels in Persia then fled from Persia, Persia then invaded Turkey opening the war in the Lake Van Region – Persia Invaded Turkey!! ..... Seriously how am i being a revisionist
Also Paul... What about the Iranians running a proxy war with Israel and the United states.... what about that? what's the excuse there? Also the Invasions in Afghanistan in 1816 it was the Afghnis that fought back against the Iranians.. not the British.. local Afghanis rebels forced the Persians to exit afghanistan. Who's revising history Paul, why are you making excuses for Iran's history?

If Iran creates a bomb and uses it, It will be the end of Iran, I know you live in a country that appears to worship death, But you need to understand. If you had a nuke you wouldn't use it on Israel, If you did you would destroy the holy areas your trying to protect, So you have only one target in mind with your nuke, If one of your little nukes is set off in America, America could fire one missile and that one missile will have enough nuclear warhead inside to hit every major city in Iran and Our Nuke will flatten and render those cities unlivable for a 1000 years, So there will no longer be a Iran. The men who run your country are under the belief that if they put Islam in a serious enough situation your 12th Inman will come. It wont matter if he comes or not because Iran will no longer be a place on the map, Instead, on a map of the world will be a red zone where Iran used to be that says contaminated. This is a possible future for Iran.

First there is NO proof that Iran is involved in any of those things. Are you saying Bush chicken out to confront us? If there was a proof he should do something right? But even if Iran help other nations to get ride of foreign invaders (you) it is not an act of war; it is just helping other people to get rid of invaders.
As I said UAE is a new country and is younger than my dad. Iran has all those area before that country become a country. It is that simple
About Afghanestan: what Britain doing in our backyard? It is like Iran make a base in Ireland. Iran did not attacked them, Iran defend itself from those Imperialists.

        Amir –
What proof did we have that Iran was/is supplying Arms to insurgent groups that are attacking US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan? How about the bomb materials have been traced to Iran. How about captured Iranians in Iraq. We have plenty of proof that Iran has been involved in supporting insurgent forces. You're asking why we didn't invade you because of it? Just because we know you're doing that doesn't mean we're going to launch a war against you. We also know you plotted to assassinate a Saudi diplomat on our soil, we didn't go to war over it. War is not our ultimate objective, we don't want to be fighting. It's just idiots like yourself that think that.
As for the UAE, it doesn't matter how old that country is it had legitimate claims to those islands and you took them by force.
As for afghanistan, Afghanistan is not your backyard. there are people there, it's not yours, so the british and you had no right there, attacking afghanistan was not defending Iran. You're just trying to justify the wars your country has been in. In the end it doesn't matter you know as well as i do Iran supports Hezzbolah and Hamas and are basically providing terrorists with weapons to kill people.

Iran did not use force against UAE. our forces were in those Islands when that country start to be existed, if they want those Islands they have to fight for it and in that case they will be the invader. it is like a new country start to be existed in your border and claim Florida, will you give that state to them?
Some part of Afghanistan was historically a part of Iran so at the time that you are referring it was Iran territory. We lost those areas under Britain pressure (To be exact they invaded Iran's Bushehr port and forced Iran- which was very weak- to give those area to Britain later those area become a country named Afghanistan. As you see, It was Britan that make all problems that existed in the region today.)

The history of your nation is recorded by the world and i know it might not be the same in an Iranian textbook but facts are facts... you invaded Afghanistan, you invaded Turkey, you support terrorist groups like Hammas and Hezzbolah and you did indeed supply arms to insurgents in Iraq and afghanistan to kill US forces. You also tried to assassinate a Saudi Diplomat on our soil. You are a bunch of cowards that try to strike at people from the darkness because you know if you pushed it to war you would get beat. We were the first to use it to show our resolve to the Japanese. If they had not seen the enormous power of these bombs, we would have needed to invade the Japanese mainland at the cost os many times the lives lost to the bombs and possibly adding years more to WWII. If we had not used those bombs, the rest of the world would never have known their potential and adopted the assured mutual destruction doctrines.

Besides, using the atom bombs in Japan paled in comparison to the fire bombing of Tokyo. Many times more civilians were killed in those attacks. It is just the fact that we could cause so much destruction with one bomb rather than a squadron of bombers.

In third grade they'll teach you about something called "WW II" which was the reason for the building and use of the Bomb.

Germany was actively doing heavy water experiments and seeking the A-bomb during WWII. We beat them to it. As Germany had a bond with Japan during that war, Japan would have clearlyreceived one from Germany and used it on our west coast coinciding with Germany on our east coast. So he who won the race striked first.

That is typical of us americans to just sit and point and say they just blow themselves up blah blah. A fact that the majority of people don't know is that Iran elected Mohammad Mosaddegh as prime minister and had a plan in place to shift the government and take control of THEIR oil which was controlled by what is now BP. The US and the Brits didn't take kind to this and overthrew the democratic leader. S

Don't sit here and give the US superiority and entitlement crap...we created this monster because we greedily wanted money from oil that was not ours. We prevented Iran from becoming a democracy then condemn them when they build a gov't with ppl put in place by the west AND building resentment for us.

        February 16, 2012 at 2:36 pm |
      • A

ok not completely our fault but for a lot of these countries, Iran included, a) we assume they want the american lifestyle when they don't (because we say it's better) b) built resentment because of countries like the US constantly budding in.

If you were born/grew up in a country where you had countries half way across the world telling you how to govern your own people and telling you how you should act...wouldn't you fight back? From a political stand point it makes sense why Iran is doing this. They come from a completely different part of the world, practice a different religion, and have other ways/ideas of living a 'fulfilled' life other than building a multimillion/billion corporation and building profit.

We broke free when we were being bullied but condemn others when they try and do the same. And again, although not entirely the US fault, if Mossadegh instills the democratic government, we most likely are not having this conversation and are not enemies with Iran.

You want me to sit here and defend the use of an Atom bomb (which by the way is nothing compared to the Nuclear weapons we have today)? First if you had read a book, you'd know the US land invasion of Japan would have inflicted far more casualties on both sides than using the bomb to end the war. Second, Any Nation in WW2 if they had developed the bomb first, would have used it. 3rd, since those bombs were dropped, the United States has decided that is NOT a way to wage war and have not used it since. If you're such an American hater why do you live here? Why don't you go out in the world and find another home.

        My Dearest Clinton:

Targeting civilians to manipulate their governments is terrorism. Unless of course you're on the winning side. I, too, for many years believed the canard about "saving 500,000 American lives". In retrospect, this was nothing more than a PR pitch. By August 1945, the Japanese were completely beaten, blockaded, starving......and desperate to surrender. All they wanted was to keep their Emperor (which was eventually granted), Truman insisted on unconditional surrender – a despotic demand considering the fate which had befallen Germany (and their allies) which capitulated to similar demands after WW1. As such, it shouldn't have come as a surprise that the Japanese rejected "unconditional surrender". Furthermore, a 1946 US Strategic Bombing survey indicated that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nukings were not decisive in ending the war. Most of the military and political brass agreed. (Ike, MacArthur, Adm. Leahy, Herbert Hoover – and many others.) In a 1963 interview with Newsweek, Eisenhower stated: "The Japanese were ready to surrender, and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing."
As for the Nazis; Germany was already defeated, and it was revealed that their nuclear program was no where near that of The Manhattan Project (and it's 180,000 participants). As such the few Nazi scientists who were working to develop the bomb were quite surprised when the bombs were dropped – they doubted it would even be possible. (I have no doubt, though, that if they HAD developed it first – they would've used it without hesitation.)
If anything, it did show the rest of the world the awful power which could be achieved with a solitary bomb, which I would like to believe has served as a deterrent from future use.
Anyhow, Clinton, it's been a hoot – I've enjoyed our little pissing contest. Look forward to trading insults with you later, but right now – It's liquor time!

        Dook! Dook! Dook!

Iran's offer to go back to the negotiating table is just a delay tactic to buy more time to complete development of their nuclear capability and to delay a possible military strike against their nuclear facilities. My belief is they fully intend on developing and deploying nculear weapons to be able to wipe Israel off the face of the earth as they have previously promised. These are dangerous times. The West (Neville Chamberlin) tried to appease Hitler to maintain peace in the 1930's, and we know where that ended up.

Well lets see Israel isnt threatening to blow everyone up, Israel kills those who attack them first, usually to about a 20 to 1 ratio, If Israel didn't have the bomb there wouldn't be a Israel today, It is the fear of Israels nukes that Keep the Arabs at bay, Iran isnt going to use a Nuke on little bitty Israel, Because they dont really care about Israel, They dont really care about palatine, But they want to dominate the Middle East and so they care about the country's standing in there way and that is the US. Once they have a Nuke they will feel secure enough to move forward with there aggression towards there neighbors like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran wants to rule and we are in there way, Its as simple as that.

The Jap Nuke plant survived the quake just fine, it was that 40 meter wave that caused them problems when it whipped out the equipment used to cool the reactors.

I am not typically answer these kind of stupid comments (that actually show you don't have any logic and so try to belittle other people.) but since I have tried both methods let me give you some opinion:
As a matter of fact, the old Iranian way is by far more nature friendly and less wasteful. Each time you go to bath you destroy a lot of trees. Moreover, many of these papers that you are using are a product of China and are produced in very unclean condition (just do a search on the net) and finally, if after doing the job, you wash your hands with soap there would be no problem and in fact you can clean your anus area far better by water than by paper.

So is just leaving crap on your A##... but i'm not going to do that... seriously just be honest, you can't afford toilet paper and your society hasn't really evolved in over a thousand years.... also... you take bath's? that suprises me, why then do you smell so bad?

I have never seen any Iranian who smells; as a matter of fact unlike most American most Iranian use soap after going to bathroom., take the shower on daily bases and do not let animals pee on their carpet and floor. Iranian are by far more cleaner than your fellow American. I have been visited both countries but I guess you never get out of US so live with your fantasy

Actually it makes more sense to use the water in cleaning one's butt than in flushing the waste. We need to get away from flush toilets as there is not enough water. Now India is requiring one flush toilet per house – this is unsustainable – that water should go for drinking and household hygiene. People are working to get around these problems, but just wiping butts with paper is less clean than water, and as pointed out, the use of paper makes a double waste. The French bidet get over to problem drying the butt after water in a cold climate.

All of Iran's neighbors want Iran to stop with the Nuky weapons program...Pakistan and India do not want another Nuky power in the area...and are in range of Iran's missiles..Iraq fought Iran from 1980-1988 and does not want a nuky Iran next door telling them what to do...Neither does Afghanistan..

Saudi Arabia and Iran are not friends and are in range of Iran's missiles...Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, many others do not want Iran with nuky weapons controlling the straits...

Israel's neighbors do not want a nuky attack on Israel and the radiation fallout killing more Arabs then Jews..destroying the Golden Domed Temple..a holly site to Islam...making large areas of they countries unlivable for decades due to radiation...

Just look at Japan Cesium-137 30 year half life found 200 miles from reactors at 11 times safe limits...Cesium-137 attacks the bones, lung, stomach...causing cancer...just look at John of 93 of 247 cast and crew of 1956 movie "The Conqueror" filmed near an above ground nuky test site in Utah...John Wayne survived lung cancer, but died of stomach cancer....

Neighbors of Iran do not want that radiation fallout all over their oil fields after a counter attack on Iran...

China has large investments in Iraq and Afghanistan does not want them covered in radiation..
Russia is owed money still...and does not want to be blamed by the world after Iran attacks Israel or Saudi Arabia....Yes Saudi Arabia is under bigger threat then Israel from a nuky Iran...

true ,the reactor fuel was a test fuel, if you watch the youtube video of the helo going over the reactor you can see the iodine 131 and 137 . rumor has it that the oxygen around the reactor turned into radioactive radon gas and hydrogen that was spuing out with a open core, that video gives me chills just watching it because i know all about radioactive materials the first time i saw it was in a class on safety of hazardess materials, then i went on to chemistry thats the kind of crap that iran would go through x100, i dont wish that on anybody . the middle east would be a no go zone for anybody

So if Iran does go Nuky...Then Maybe the U.S. will sell weapons to Saudi Arabia...or put them at a U.S. base in Saudi Arabia. and Kuwait..

With Iran moving ahead..Saudi Arabia is looking at buying Nuky weapons from the U.S, or developing it's own program...

So if Iran gets Nuky Weapons...maybe so will 5 or 6 of it's neighbors...Qatar, U.E.M. Bahrain... The U.S. could do the same thing with North Korea...arm South Korea, Japan, Taiwan...all in a few days or weeks..what great Idea..the U.S. could use the arms pay down our debt..I'm sure the GOP would go for it too.. Russia and China could joint in and all three could make some big bucks...and Britain and France too...

Wee a new Nuclear arms sales bonanza..good for the worlds economy...and really dangerous for the Middle East and Asia..

Iran will get what's coming too them and soon. And for all those who actually believe Iran would dare launch a nuclear warhead against Israel or the U.S.A., you really need to put away your crack pipe !! The Tehran, Iranian Islamo-Fascist Dictatorship knows all too well they will be wiped off the face of the globe should they even consider something so ludicrous. Also, a nuclear warhead launched against Israel would, in turn, wipe out the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Iran's ambition is to protect their beloved Fatah movement and Hamas terrorist organization. Nuclear fallout would also reach Lebanon and affect the Iranian-sponsored Hezbollah terrorist group. Iran would not dare look at wiping out the Fascist terrorist organizations they are so humbly aligned too.

Kind of funny that your arguing over which magical theory is the correct one don't you think? Also, you can't have it both ways. You can't scream that your beliefs are under attack and then go on a profanity laced response which attacks other people's beliefs. Finally, shouldn't the fact that you have faith in what believe be enough? Do you really need others to believe it to and somehow by doing so give it credibility? I think the fact that you are protesting so vehemently may mean that you don't really put a lot of stock in your faith. Shhh, I think your slip is showing.

Maybe you should read a history book before you start spouting off... the crusades, the inquisition, the conflicts in the new world, don't even scrape the surface of what those 2 tyrants i listed (both anti-religion) did as far as killing people, and that's not even including the Chinese, basically any Communist country is anti-religion. Nick – So let me get this straight, so defending profeta mexico (the original poster who was insulted for posting something about his belief in God) and showing people who were insulting him what it's like to have their beliefs challenged means that i lack belief in my faith? Seriously? come on dude, when someone says something about my faith and challenges someone else for believing what they do and insults them for no reason, i'm going to say something, It has nothing to do with whether or not i believe, it has everything to do with telling people they're wrong when they're wrong. I didn't jump on the forum and start posting that Atheists are idiots... I posted that in response to someone attacking my faith and someone elses, because i want them to know what it feels like to have someone challenge their beliefs just like what they're doing to this profito guy. And by hopping in here to attack me and say i have no faith when you have no stock in the argument, what does that say about you?

Thank you for proving my point. I too have faith in something but notice the difference between what you did and what did. I did not say your beliefs were wrong nor did I attack your religion. What I said was that your attack (or counter attack – call it what you want) speaks volumes about you as an individual. Like many others who want to "defend" their faith or feel the need to engage in a discussion to help "defend" others what you're really doing is pushing your beliefs, forcefully I might add, on others. This is what religion has always done. It is the way it expands itself. It is the reason so many atrocities are committed in its name. Notice you're defending someone who has not said anything to those who have attacked him. Don't confuse loud and angry with firm conviction in faith. Protefo Mexico, now he has his beliefs and doesn't care what anyone thinks.

And those that stand by and watch people be insulted for believing a certain way without the courage to say something about are cowards. I have many questions about my beliefs of course, everybody should, the bible even says we should question. However, That doesn't mean i lack faith, and if me defending someone who's beliefs are being attacked and showing those people how it feels to be attacked themselves on their beliefs means i don't believe in your head then whatever, what business of it is yours. Personally i could give 2 !@#$'s about you or how you feel about how strongly i believe, i'm not pushing my religion on anybody, i don't care if you find salvation or not, it's not my job to force anybody to believe what i believe, but i also am not going to sit by and watch people degrade someone elses beliefs because i'm not a coward like you.

first off it's spelled racist... second, I didn't harm a single woman or child in Iraq, quite the opposite, i spent the majority of my time in Iraq protecting women and children from Armed thugs that cut off people's heads because they didn't agree with their political point of view. I have nothing against the people of Iraq, I in fact saved a number of Iraqi's and provided medical aid to many of them.
You have no idea who i am, or what i've done, don't try and judge me like you have a clue. Were you in Iraq? do you have a clue what happened there? Do you even know why there was so much violence in that country? It was because once Saddam was gone, Armed Thugs from all over the Middle East poured into Iraq, many from Syria and Iran and decided to try and turn Iraq into a jihadist warzone... right in these poor people's backyard... And the only reason it stopped was because Brave Iraqi's finally said enough was enough and stood up to those foreign fighters and took back control of their country. I have a ton of respect for them. I cared a lot for the people i met there... Seriously don't go judging me, and God can Judge me indeed for what i did for those women and children. I came to their aid and saved some of their lives.

Coward really? The problem with you is that you somehow believe that through name calling and intimidation from behind a computer screen that you are brave and those that have the ability to respond to your stupid dumb @ss @$!?ing (oh yeah I know those words too) arguments are cowards. When all else fails subject your opponent to name calling. Maybe Jesus will wash your mouth out with soap when you get to see him. As between the two of us I think our discussion has shown that I have the ability to engage in a discussion free from name calling (before you decided to drag us into the gutter) and am content in my beliefs. You on the other hand, will lets see how would you put it, you can go $&!k yourself.

        Nick –
So you basically tried to say that I was wrong because I shouldn't have defended someone else who's beliefs were being insulted, because i used name calling and profanity... and you basically said your position is better than mine because you argue without namecalling... then you end your rebuttal to my statements by telling me to F@#% off? lmfao... Well done... maybe in the end you just need to realize that some people are passionate about certain topics... and one of the things that i abhor is bullying... and when i see 2 or 3 idiots blasting a guy for believing in God... yeh i'm going to ridicule them and make them feel attacked... that's how i am... and apparently despite you thinking i'm wrong because i use name-calling and that automatically means i'm just ignorant and my argument is weakened because of it... you just used the same words i did... ... hrmm.. maybe you should come down from the high horse you're sitting on?

Maybe you should not spend so much time telling others to read books and instead read the responses to your mindless drivel. I only used profanity when you decided to engage in profanity and name calling towards me. As for your argument it' has no merit. Passion is fine but I hardly call what was done by the comments as bullying. Looks like from the posts here that you're the only bully to be found. As for the name calling again when we stopped debating and started name calling, well lets just say I felt bullied and needed to respond in kind. Intelligent discourse can be passionate without the need to be profane. But when you made it profane towards me you should be happy to get the same medicine. Sorry buddy no more time for you. Me and my horse are outa here. It looks like there's nothing but jack @sses around.

    1. It's ok for the US and Israel to have nukes but not others? Thats BS. 2. It hasn't been established that Iran is building nukes and it has never claimed to. Nuclear plants would boost the Iranian economy and acheivements, which is what Israel doesn't want. And if they did want nukes and got them, they'd be a deterrent to attacks by Israel. Iran isn't dumb enough to use them in a first strike. The fact is Israel has nukes and there needs to be a balancing factor. If Israel doesn't want nukes in the region then get rid of yours. The real reason here is Israel wants to maintain superiority so it can do whatever it wants when it wants, including any fight for resources in the future, i.e. water. Nuclear material, without making nukes, can also be used in conventional weapons like depleted uranium tank shells, bombs, and missiles which can penetrate armor. The US has it and Israel doesn't anyone else to have it.

I disagree with the last part of your post. It's not that we are describing them as ready "to race at Daytona." More likely, that they are ready to cause a huge CRASH at Daytona. Their goal isn't to win, it's for us to LOSE.

Yes but if that is they goal now, or becomes the goal of the Iranian leadership if they fell they will lose power, they can attack the huge oil refineries in range of their current missiles right now without nuky weapons....

.Iran could strike the huge oil refineries in Saudi Arabia..and send the Whole World into chaos right now...Just think what it would do to hit several refineries in the middle east...Russia's oil prices would skyrocket, as would every other oil producer price...

So Iran has worked so hard at enrichment and now has 3 to 5% enriched of U-235 pulled from natural Iranian Uranium which is normally 99.3 % U-238...but to make a weapon they need 90%plus of U-235....and they need 15-20 kg of 90% U-238 for one weapon...they have just made their first rod of 3 to 5% U-235, how many rods have they made, and just how many do they need to get the reactor even running...They still have a ways to go...

The article also mentions a facility near Israel in Fordow that is capable of creating 20% enriched uranium, so their technology is jumping from 3-5% to 15-20%. At that rate, the next leap puts them at 60-70% enriched... that 90% threshold is getting closer and closer... but, lucky for you, there's plenty of sand out here for you to bury your head in.

but with all the money spent on these reactors, Iran could have some huge wind farms, and solar farms, and be using renewable energy instead...

@melvinslizard Oh and you would know because you are a nuclear scientist, or you are a secret US spy planted in Tehran, oh wait, may be you are just a plain Nostradumbass....

Iran has not attacked anyone outside of their own borders since the 1980s when they had to defend themselves against an Iraqi invasion of the Khoozestan province. There are many leaders in many countries that constantly threaten other countries (doesnt mean its right, and doesnt mean they're going to do it). A LOT of countries hate Israel in that region (for their own reasons) and vice versa. Just because Ahmedinejad stupidly threatens Israel, doesnt mean he's going to attack it or even has the capability or the power to. There is absolutely no evidence that they're building a bomb. They have not said it, the IAEA inspectors have not and the US and Israeli intelligence have not said it. They speculate that they might "want" to. That is not reason enough for sanctions not is it reason enough to really react in any way whatsoever.

Asner told Alex and his nationally syndicated radio show audience that the Seals are attempting to alert the American people about the prospect of a false flag operation and “more foreign escapades” before the establishment media “starts brainwashing us.”

Asner said it is up to the American people to recognize and prevent an imminent false flag operation and stop another disastrous war before it gets started. He said the Navy Seals are now coming forward because they are worried that an Iran false flag attack “runs the danger” of creating a “world-wide conflict if it gets out of hand.”

The only reason anyone should worry about another country building a nuclear bomb, which keep in mind Iran is still within the confines of IAEA's NPT, is if they want to have a regional monopoly. So, here we have Israeli elements within US who are writing to ALL national, regional, and local newspapers scaring the you know what out of many folks telling them that if Iran develops the nuke bomb, gas prices will sky rocket. This is a self preservation issue that little Israeli aparatchiks have been trained to scare others into believing. I say look at the historic aggression of different countries in the Middle East region. And, for better or for worse, the one country that has never been an aggressor... boys and girls, any guesses? Yup, Iran! Israel go home. Leave us alone. Stop scaring us. Fight your own wars.

How about shutting your fool persian mouth about igorance, your country blindly follows a religious tyrant that sent boys out to commit suicide against armed men in the name of "allah" when he wasn't willing to do it himself.... i'm suprised you even have internet... go back to subjugating your women and stoning people for challenging your Government.

Another stupid comment. If you think Iranian are backward and riding their camels then why you are so paranoid? The whole civilization is existed because of us. If we did not start agriculture and city building several thousands years ago you were still living in caves

That's what a pathetic Iranian would believe huh? Well tell me this... why is it if you've been around the longest, your country hasn't even mastered the fine art of Plumbing... How come in the cradle of civilization you don't even use toilet paper to wipe your as#? how about, why is it you're still so pathetically weak we could destroy your entire civilization without using a bomb that you so eagerly seek? .... you had thousands of years of civilization to get a head start on the rest of the world and your only true income comes from sucking black sludge out of the ground.... congrats...

If IRan doesn't want to impress anyone, why did it make this a worldwide event, announced every day for a week leading up to it, with TV cameras and reporters invited?

Why are countries spending sooo much money on making weapons? Why can't people use the funds for that horrible idea which will eventually only lead to violence to help their citizens out instead? Health care, education, cleaning the environment, charity that helps find cures for cancer and diseases, charity that helps save wildlife in danger, charities that help the hungry and homeless and those affected by natural disasters, economy, etc....these are the issues the entire world really needs to focus on, NOT ways to hurt one another.

Why should I care. There are a lot of countries that have it. The fact they have it prove they have intelligence. Israel had it before them so now I guess its fair.

James, you should care because once they have a bomb, that nut job they have running the country will likely use it. I mean both nut jobs. This isolationist attitudes you folks have is really disconcerting too say the least.

If Iran had nuclear weapons it wouldnt even be able to keep them safe and away from itself. Iran is a terrorist state. Its only a matter of one corrupt official doing something to hand a nuke over.

Iran cannot even make a gallon of gasoline. They are inept and no they do not have the bomb and won't have it.

It is surprising about all these stereo type comments. There are just as many nut case religious pious people here and we had slavery for 100 years after creating a Democratic society and not till the 100 years after that did we actually correct it. We are the only country to have used the bomb on a civilian city. We could have picked something much smaller to make a point.
Now some other facts; Iran already has the nuke and had it for years. They acquired it from the soviet meltdown bought I beleive 5 or 6 and China bought the others. That was 20 years ago its not much to reverse engineer.
They are not stupid people as for a country so sanctioned for 40 years they have progressed. So when a country backs a dictator the people eventually rise up, is it any surprise they would hate the dictators backer? We could have appologised but no continue that we did no wrong.

Not even close. We do indeed have lots of religious people here but most just pay lip service. The ‘true believers’ are rather few. (relatively speaking) You need only see the direction that equal rights for woman and minoritys (including gays) is going. Ab.ortion rights and so on. You won’t find that kind of equality in Iran bud.

And, Iran mostly a Shiite country. Do you know what they're philosophy is? To them, there must be CHAOS before their awaited 12th Imam returns. That's why you should be worried. If they do create a nuke, they WILL NOT hesitate to use it/them. I think most Americans take our military power for granted. Greedy empires DO NOT last forever. Don't expect this one to either.

Folks, Israel ALREADY has nukes. Period. Israel has threatened to use its nukes even it weren't nuked. Period. Israel hasn't signed the non-proliferation treaty but Iran has. Period. If Israel doesn't want nukes in the region it needs to get rid of its own nukes. Period. Iran never claimed it wants nukes and the IAEA hasn't concluded that it does, or else they wouldn't keep doing inspections in Iran. Period.

I tried to reason with Ahmadi about this final solution crap, I spoke to Putin about it and to his credit he told them stop publicly, but Ahmadi spoke out again soon after about it in defiance. Which showed me that Putin has no control over them and Russian influence is limited.

Dimona is located 8.5 miles from the town of the same name. Given that about four kilograms of weapons grade plutonium are used in each nuclear weapon, Israel has produced enough plutonium at Dimona to construct between 100 and 200 nuclear weapons. It has also produced about 170 kilograms of Lithium-6, which would produce about 220 kilograms of lithium-6 deuteride. Roughly 6 kilograms are needed to construct a thermo-nuclear weapon. Israel could, therefore, have as many as 35 thermo-nuclear weapons.
Once described as a "textiles factory" by David Ben-Gurion, Dimona is made up of separate blocks. Currently, there are nine of these blocks, called machons. Machons 1, 2, 8 and 9 are directly involved in producing materials for nuclear or thermo-nuclear weapons; the others provide services for these four. If you want some more information about the Israeli Nuclear program just let me know and I will provide you with some more info. This is just the tip of the ice.
