Ten-year-old suicide bombers arrested

By Barbara Starr at the Pentagon and Masoud Popalzai in Afghanistan

Two children have been rearrested in southern Afghanistan for being prospective suicide bombers, the International Security Assistance Force said.

The two "young male" would-be bombers were detained in the past week, the ISAF said in a written statement.

The two kids, both ten years old, were arrested along with three adults, according to the Afghanistan National Directorate of Security (NDS).

Last summer, Afghan President Hamid Karzai pardoned a group of would-be child suicide attackers ranging in age from 8 to 17. Some of the 20 youngsters told Karzai they had been recruited by the Taliban, strapped with vests and ordered to detonate them near foreigners, the president's office said in a statement last August. Militants told the youngsters that the blasts would spare them but kill the foreigners, it said.

The two arrested in Kandahar recently were from that group of pardoned children, according to the NDS statement, and had gone to Quetta, Pakistan to get more training before being sent back to Afghanistan for suicide attacks.

One of the children, from southeastern Afghanistan, said he was told by Mullahs at a madrasa in Pakistan that he would survice the suicide attack and it would not harm him, the NDS statement said.  The other child, originally from Pakistan, said he was cheated by armed men and he asked to be pardoned again.

"The cold tactic of using any human being - especially children - to conduct suicide attacks is utterly despicable, and I denounce these tactics," Gen. John Allen, commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in the ISAF statement.

The children are "instructed" in suicide bomb vests and indoctrinated, according to a senior ISAF official.

Depending on "how impressionable they are based on their age, they are told they will survive the attack" and "they are told they will be fine," the official explained.

The advantage is no one suspects them, noted the official, and "that plays a big role. The Taliban will do anything to get through the outer perimeter of security."

The official said the Kandahar group tends to target local or provincial officials, sometimes Afghan or coalition forces. The source did not know of any incident in which a child suicide bomber had been used against U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Cold stories like these relating those bastard Mullahs of Taliban make my blood boil, to join the pak army and blast these morons out of existence. Using children to create blasts....scumbags. Mullah Umar and the like should be waged war against by all humanity. Theses scum bags used suicide attacks even implicating the great Musharraf to be the belligerant infact they themselves were the killers. Bravo to Pak Army, and LONG Live the Army.

Stuck in the Middle, I think you got my post wrong. Well, maybe I didn't explain it right. Either way, I was saying that he wants acceptance and seems to have zero tolorance for anyone who disagrees with him. That to me is wrong. I will defend his right to love whomever he wants, but I won't stand behind him if he can't accept that some people will never agree with him.

And as to the my "Joking" comment, Does that person really think the kids are going to go to some kind of counseling. What part of the world do they think this happened in, Detroit? This is Afghanistan, there are no social programs like that. These kids can't be removed from the situation, or we'd be removing every child in almost every middle eastern country. Where are we going to put them...Detroit?

Im not saying to lock them up, but they are not as innocent as us westerners think.

I hope that clears up a few things, have a great day.

Call me whatever you want but as with all people I draw the line somewhere. Just because you were born that way doesn't mean you have to stay that way. I',m gald you ranout of money. My mom said you had the smallest dick she had ever seen and she just laughed and laughed. Some people are funny with wit. You are crass with a stupidity born of insult and prejudice. What makes you so affraid of homosexuality?
Is it your backwoods childhood. Someone told you they were bad people and you this hate in your heart.

And, yes, I have a smaller then normal member. But if I stick it in your ass, you will still enjoy it. It will remind you of your prison days.
I bet you're kind of guy who thinks if you rape a guy in jail, he's the one who is gay. Admit it, you're so affraid of people thinking you might be soft, you over compansate for it with anger.

and if you want to come over, I'm in Afghanistan at the moment. Stationed in Kabul. I'll meet you at the airport. What time is your flight.

You must be a real strong man, can you bend metal bars with your bare hands.

      Tolorance is something you need.

I am talking about the two youths who were used by the taliban. I personally think that these boys should be used for nothing. Let them develop into fine young men. Fine! So for all of you weirdos out there, stay away from the downtown areas, because that is where I rule, where me andmy friends rule, where the "real men" are.

This has been the most interesting, disturbing, amusing, bias (some of the comments) posts I've read period. Definitely kept my attention-100%! By the end though, the responses were getting so outrageous, the intelligent posts that actually invoked meaning to what the article was about was 'lost in translation.' My only question what is going on with all these Orders-New alien order and membership etc? Regardless of what you believe in or lack of, thats definitely your opinion, no foul there. But for real people to take you seriously in this world and your comments carry the weight you feel they deserve, you lost most of your creditability when you go telling others about your membership and new order mess! You sound like you are trying to start your own religion. Then i'm guessing you are going to some set of rules but since you dont believe in the bible, you are going make up some sort of 'e-bible' for us to download to view! LOL GEEZ

You say we're mean. Well, why do you feel the need to keep reminding everyone you like men. Nobody on this post would have known had you not said so. You ask for tolorance, but give none in return when you don't like what is said.

You sleep with wohmever you want, but don't get upset when you are told by someone they think your life style is wrong.

Try tolorating the fact that every time you scream and put in the face of all your life style, you're going to get a negative reaction. If this is what your going for, then you are getting exactly what you want. Honestly, no one cares. What we care about is you telling us we have to accept it. Why don't you accept the fact we don't want to.

Wow, what a collection of ignorant, stupid and just plain vicious folks.

    Where to start?

Phearis: those killings were in Norway. I assume by "Sweetish" you meant "Swedish"? What, no maps or globes in your trailer? Sorry that the 7th grade was so rough, but maybe you should give it another try?

GaryB: spare us the whining about the Crusades. The Crusades were in response to hundreds of years of Muslim aggression against the Christian populations of the middle east, north Africa, Anatolia and Iberia. All of those lands were Christian until they were invaded and their people forcibly converted by Muslims. And let's be honest: the Crusades ended centuries ago. Muslim aggression against non-Muslims is occurring today, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, the Philippines, Ossetia, Egypt...

Maria: the Taliban are responsible for over 90% of the civilian deaths in Afghanistan. They aren't "defending" anyone; their attacks on Afghan schoolchildren make it clear that they are more concerned with imposing their islam on Afghans than they are in "defending" Afghan children.

Thannak: name a single "Christian suicide bombing" in Ireland. Just one, m'kay? Here's a hint from an Irishman: the Troubles in the north of Ireland weren't about religion, they were about ethnicity and political power. No one in the IRA ever strapped a bomb on their body and blew up a school or grocery in the name of the Pope.

Lord Haw-Haw: just shut the fuck up. You're a contemptible vile person.

Religious wars are always about power and never about religion. Religion is just the most effective tool that the powerful use to convince the weak minded to die for a cause that isn't theirs. And yes, the IRA were no better than the Taliban. Christians murdered others for centuries in the name of god and only stopped recently because secular governmentns denied tham the power to do so. Just check out Real Catholic TV and you'll see a guy who would just love to bring back the inquisition.

Thank goodness being a Christian has nothing to do with that corrupted, manipulative HUMAN invention called religion...Christ if you read in the Gospels was angered by the hypocritical "religious" leaders duing his ministry and vehmently spoke out against them more that the most vile "sinner"...in addition, this "religion" has nothing to with what Christ intended for the "Church"...unfortunately HUMANS with all their faults have on many occasions, made THEIR church into a "religious" institution...fortunately not all churches are like that and those churches keep true to Christ's teachings and attitude and these churches are the TRUE representation and definition of Christianity. You had us worried there that this whole Christian or being "Christlike" thing was garbage...

Having been in the jaws of the tiger more than once, I can tell you the boys are not being completely honest. They are taught to "deceive thy enemies" and they consider anyone not a follower as an enemy. I know they knew they would be blown up. However, in most, but not all, of the cases I’ve been privy to, the young ones were either paying off a debt for the family, or being forced to martyr themselves.
Most of them do not do this willingly, but out of a demented sense of loyalty to the family, tribe or worse, the faith. They are trained and told they will be honoring their family name and their family will enjoy a path of prosperity, both financial and spiritually.
They are taught that the non followers are weak and will believe the words of a child. If discovered and caught, they are instructed on what to say and how to make the non believer feel pity and sorrow for them. The first thing they are told to say is they were forced to do it.
I spent 5 years working in this field. I lived in their villages, I ate at the homes of true believers thinking all the time, if they knew what my missions were, I would never see the U.S. and my family again. I have listened to their teachings and seen the requests made of the children. I have slept in the jaws of the tiger and awoke to find myself still alive.

For those of you about to bash my post and lump me in with some of the nut jobs, remember, I am a US Soldier, I am a non believer.

Having actually been in Afghanistan, unlike "Joe," I'm well aware that the vast overwhelming majority of children killed in Afghanistan have died at the hands of the Taliban and their campaign of bombing markets, setting off IEDs to destroy buses and trucks carrying civilians, murder of clan and village elders-and their families-who refuse to support the Taliban.

Joe wants us to believe that the same Taliban that throws acid in the faces of pre-teen schoolgirls and straps bombs to their pre-teen brothers is somehow the victim here and that they care about the children of Afghanistan.

Joe is a fool or a traitor. More likely, both.

These people are not muslims they shouldn't even be considered as human beings.Animals at best, to get an innocent child to become a suicide bomber..... What annoys me most is people like you who come from supposedly civilized and educated countries believe the first word coming out of the mouth of any madman on the street. It is probably a good thing to make this public knowledge. I think most people are just ignorant to the methods these scum use. Ignorance in this case is not their fault but yours for not making more noise about this stuff so people can understand the tactics when they see dead kids in syria and abroad. They need to be able to comprehend that it is reasonable to think they would do such things intentionally.

Religion is NOT the issue. It's people that kill in the name of religion. Religion doesn't support murder by suicide bombers, ied's, beheadings, etc. Yet somehow because someone says they are doing it in the name of such and such religion everyone believes that's the way it is. If a mass murderer goes through DC and claims he is doing it in the name of Christianity, or Islam does it make any difference than it happening over in the Middle East? Those that claim they are doing it for religion truly are not. They are doing it for profit or for their own interests.

That all being said, I hate religion as a concept. I do believe that Jesus died on the cross to save us from eternal suffering. This doesn't mean I'm religious, it just means I have beliefs and things that I stand for in life.

I understand why religion gets a bad name. It's all man made and there is no perfect man on earth. Everyone is a hypocrite (yes even myself) a number of times throughout their life. You can pick apart ANY religion based on how it's people act at their worst possible time.

    Beliefs work, religion doesn't...

What is the role of established religions in the arising of the new consciousness? Many people are already aware of the difference between spirituality and religion. They realize that having a belief system—a set of thoughts that you regard as the absolute truth—does not make you spiritual no matter what the nature of those beliefs is. In fact, the more you make your thoughts (beliefs) into an identity, the more cut off you are from the spiritual dimension within yourself. Many “religious” people are stuck at that level. The equate truth with thought, and as they are completely identified with their thoughts (their mind), they claim to be in sole possession of the truth in an unconscious attempt to protect their identity. They don’t realize the limitations of thought. Unless you believe (think) exactly as they do, you are wrong in their eyes, and in the not-too-distant past, they would have felt justified in killing you for that. And some still do, even now. — Eckhart Tolle

Believing in things that do not exist is dangerous, in and of itself. Religion would not exist if people like you stopped believing in the Invisible Sky Jew. You cannot seperate the religion from the god. In for a penny, in for a pound...

And you have every right to believe this if you like. I fight every day (literally fight) so that Americans (and I do not speak for others) have the rights to believe what they want and say whatever they want without repercussion. I don't push my beliefs (notice I didn't say religion, and I don't believe they have to be the same) on anyone (though many do) and I certainly don't agree with anyone trying to push their beliefs or religion on me. If you want to belittle my beliefs that is your right, and I will defend it with my life (literally) each and every day I am here. By you doing so, however it shows ignorance and spite which is far more dangerous than any of my beliefs.

I am not a gullible person, and I have not been duped or brainwashed into my beliefs. I have them by choice and nobody is making me think the way I do. Any belief or religion that tells people to kill in the name of this or that is leading people in the wrong direction of that I am certain.

I don't persecute people of different beliefs than myself, and the ones that do the persecution are far more dangerous than I ever am.

Anyone that fools themselves into thinking that freedom comes at no cost is simply a fool. The cost of freedom (and I speak for those in America) has NEVER been free. People die daily for those freedoms that people trample and take advantage of.

Don't kid yourself. You're no more intelligent than anyone else who believes in fairy tales. Get this through your head: YOUR god, like everyone else's, IS A MYTH! It's NOT REAL! Your "god" only exists in your head! ALL believers have the potential to be dangerous, as they have already proven that they can be easily manipulated. THINK FOR YOURSELF!!!

        February 15, 2012 at 1:23 am |
      • Buzzer

Colt: Why are you so concerned with what others "believe"? To just bring them down into your "reality" that offers NOTHING once you pass from this earth and to give validation to yourself so you can get through the day? Put it this way, if I as a believer turn out to be wrong and you're right and you believe we (not your physical body, but YOU) just cease to "exist" (when our physical body ceases to function) then neither you or I will be able to say "I told you so" and "prove the other wrong". In this case, you whole argument of trying to validate your own belief (you do believe, because you don't know) is pointless because ultimately who are you going to be able to say "I'm right and you're wrong" to? On the other hand if I'm right and you're wrong, your rejection of an entity that I and BILLIONS of others believe exists and created us, what would you have HIM do with you and your "choice" to reject HIS existence? Yes, all of us believe in what we think is the "truth"...if you're definition of this truth is "knowing" defined by "physical proof" (ie: we have witnessed with our own eyes what happens after our physical bodies cease to function; which is impossible correct?) that is absolutely impossible...that is why people have faith...which goes beyond our physical capabilities (see, hear etc)... Bottom line, is that you have no reason to argue because you have nothing to argue for that is of any lasting eternal value...your belief in unbelief does nothing but destroy someone else's hope.

Why lie to them? There has never been...and never will be any proof that there is or was a god at any point in time.

And yeah, I was a Catholic. I was baptized. I received communion and went to confession. But as I got older, I started to see religion for what it really was. A crock.

Shall we outlaw Atheism, due to such acts ? Will you Atheists rejoice when people of religion are hurt by such attacks ? ( You might say, such will never happen, but what if a group of psychotics decided to do such an act in the name of atheism ? Your point of outlawing religion due to psychotic extremists are not valid, nor are they line with peace. I mean when are people going to wake up? Organized religion was invented to keep the uneducated masses sedated and from all out anarchy. I think we have moved past that now havent we? I mean, you CAN read right? Why do you need a religious organization to influence what in the long run is a personal decision and nothing else. No two people see religion exactly the same so why do you need someone to tell you what they think about it? We dont want pious people to die, we just want to stop hearing about it,. OKAY?

You're missing the point. People, especially atheists, are simply sick of the turmoil in the world caused by religion. You indicate these are extremists and they certainly fit the description. But these extreme actions are becoming the norm and those of us who don't share your faith share your misery. Here in the U.S. Evangelicals are openly campaigning for their view of the "most Christian" candidate. Atheists have no evidence to indicate these people won't attack the rights of those of different beliefs. Look around the world and you'll see far more examples of religious zeolots trying to impose their will on others. Here in Texas Evangelicals have changed textbooks are revised science to include religious dogma. You claim persecution but in reality you are the persecutors.

Such groups have already "arisen". Both Communists and Nazis were virulently anti-religious. Church attendance i Communist Russia resulted in an arrest, followed either by excecution, or hard labor in Siberia. Nazies were pagans, followers of pre-Christian Nordic paganism. To both, human life and dignity had no value – only the benefit of the GROUP or society was important. Atheism begins with disregard of a human life. Judeo-Christian religion treats human life as Holy – given by the Creator.

Are these kids shielded from the news in their country when people around them a blowing up themselves? Don't these kids wonder what happened to the people? This is such a shame that grown people are using children like this. Maybe Afghan should put the mothers in jail of any kid who is caught doing this. Maybe then these mothers would keep a closer eye on their kids and the grown men they are hanging around. And throw the fathers in jail also.

Atheism – Fighting or Standing Peaceful
( Both Love, Both Kill ) No difference.
Both are of the human race.
So, if we outlaw or destroy anything-
It will be the human race.
There's the answer to fighting Religious & fighting Atheists.

You have murder in your heart for gathering up ALL religious people as being the very same unfit terrorists that this article describes. You are angry, vile and are seeking out any form of news that involves Abrahamic cults, religions, or organizations that use these religious labels for propaganda or psychotic association. Hate is never the answer. So if you do not believe in a deity or force of life beyond the external that is your choice, until you violate and tread upon the peace of people who do not conform to the same activities described in this article. UNITY will be the Law someday. And you will conform to unification, because it will be the law. If you do not, you will not be tolerated as a pleasant peaceful citizen of planet Earth. We the people of this nation of Earth, love, cherish, respect, honor all those religious or not and will do our best to get along with our fellow man and woman. There is no other way of living.

thankfully a few of you are actually smart enough to know the difference between muslims and the taliban. there's a reason why taliban and al qaeda are called EXTREMISTS. they take their religion to the EXTREME. no difference between them or hitler (who justified mass killings of jews or jewish "looking" people or homosexuals). what about what's been goin on in places like the congo? those men that rape and kill actually label themselves "christian." does that mean all christians are that way? no. these certain people are just brainwashed. taliban i basically a cult claiming to be real muslims. how is that different from the idiots that drank poison kool aid? they identified themselves as christians. what about westborough baptist idiots that joyously claim our soldiers died cuz we allow homosexuality and are so happy these people have died? so because a small group get brainwashed that speaks for an entire religion right? get out of here. my brother stood along muslim afghans when he was deployed and guess what? he's been back in the states completely safe for a year.

  72. why we need tough security at the airport and the borders

This is why we have air port security even for kids. So people stop whining that your kids had to be searched at the air port security. Unfortunately, because of evil people in the world, we all have to be inconvenienced with passing through security. If someone were to slip through security and blow a plane up everyone would complain that the government should have been more strict with screening. Elderly people, children, and women are not exempt from being exploited by terrorists. They don't care who they blow up and they don't play by the rules.

Merely because they don't play by the rules doens't mean we have to give up our rights. If we do they they have already won because they have removed our freedom. I have less problem with the airport gestapo looking for weapons and explosives than I do with them looking for drugs which to a very large extent is what they are looking for, hence drug sniffing dogs and equipment. Weapons and explosives are explainable in terms of "security" but drugs are not.

You know if we just left we could ignore stories about how messed up Afghanistan was. We should ban trade and travel to the entire Pakistan Afghanistan region.

So now the Taliban is in real trouble with President Hamid Karzai for violating the Afghanistan Child Labor Laws. Bring our troops home because as soon as one of our trroops kills one of these "INNOCENT CHILDREN" in self defense, people here in the US and people in Afghanistan will be screaming to put them on trial for killing a child. They are not going to be the least bit concerned in the fact that the child was trying to blow them all up so bring them home now.

This already happened with Russia when the Russian soldiers fired at a child carrying a vest towards their tank. I don't remember the whole story but remember the noise that story made.

The Taliban throws sulfuric acid in the faces of pre-teen schoolgirls to discourage them from going to elementary school. They poisoned dozens of schoolgirls with insecticide bombs; kidnapped, tortured and murdered female schoolteachers, kidnapped and murdered unarmed civilian medical-aid workers who were in Afghanistan to provide free medical care to women and children, murdered all the non-muslim members of a volunteer eye-surgery mission...

Yeah, they're pussies. They run from Americans and Afghan Army and allied forces because we can fight them. They prefer to murder unarmed civilians, and let their sympathizers and dupes in the US and Europe do their fighting for them with demands for the US and NATO to leave Afghanistan to the mercies of the Taliban.

This expressive how distorted peoples values have become. Children at this age barely know what it means to be alive and now they are opting to end it for a cause that they don't even understand. Some sadly do it to get money for there family( not that I condone this reason) but others don't it because it's become the norm for kids growing up.It's so sad.

    • Honestly?

Way to stereotype an entire third of the world on the actions of a small group. By your logic, the KKK is Christian, so all Christians are racist, bigoted whites with ego problems.

Any absolute is absolutely dangerous. Know what you are talking about before expressing an opinion. Better be silent and thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

You're the enemy of progress. Was this kid BORN Muslim? I don't think so. Not anymore than you were BORN as a member of your faith. It's something taught and learned. This kid isn't screwed up b/c he's Muslim. He's screwed up b/c of his family. Now, you can (and you probably would) argue that "yea, it's b/c his family follows Islam, this is what they teach". To answer this all you need to do is go to the cities around this country and around the world with a high Muslim population, and ask yourself: are those people THAT DONT do these acts the norm, or the exception? You'd be ridiculous to suggest they are the exception

Bob, I have to agree 100%... For those who differ or who take the liberal approach to defend Islam, check this out... How many suicide bombers (of any age in any land) have been identified/caught and/or taught by their religious leaders and religious doctrines to do so by any of the following world-religions:

      1- Christianity
      2- Judaism
      3- Hinduism
      4- Sikhism
      5- Buddhism
      6- Paganism
      7- Wicca
      8- Satanism
      9- Westboro Baptist Church

Answer, NONE! Kissing Islams ass for fear of Islamic retribution just enables them to become more militant and violent. I do not prescribe or follow any religion which makes it pretty clear to who the "bully" is here...

Have you ever met a Muslim?

Believe it or not, they're people too. And almost every religion you have on there has had some subculture that does horrific things. Being Atheist does not give you some grand, unbiased point of view (coming from one)

Yeah, Christians don't Suicide Bomb, they just get a gun and commit genocide on children at a Sweetish Camp Ground, then demand a metal. Or start 2 Oil Wars in the name of Freedom.

I take it you've never heard of the Children's Crusade in the 13th century? Christianity has its own dark past in regards to the manipulation of children. Islam is about the same age now as Christianity was then, so perhaps this is part of the growing pains that all religions go through.

I have met Muslims, funny thing about them, they say they don't care if you are christian or american or not, but at their first opportunity they try to kill you.

Make no mistake about it, there are only 3 kinds of muslims, terrorists, terrorists in training, and terrorist supporters. The majority of Islam falls under the last one, but they do also end up being trained as terrorists as well. If not there would be none alive today with all the suicide bombs and deaths from other causes (ie war on terror, Israeli Mossad, etc)

Despite being anti-Moslem, I know why moslems are doing what they are, these self blowing people are only defending their people and country, they have no military that can destroy the US, and so this is their way of defending themselves.

There's a lot of Christian suicide bombers, they're all just mostly in Ireland.
In that conflict in fact, it's Christian flavor A VS Christian flavor B.
