No evidence North Korean leader is dead

The U.S. intelligence community has found no evidence to suggest North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is dead, a senior U.S. official said Friday following posts on China's version of Twitter that claimed Kim had been assassinated while in Beijing.
U.S. intelligence officials have been looking into such rumors for more than a week, according to the official, who has direct knowledge of the latest U.S. analysis.
"With that society you can never be 100% sure, but we just don't see any evidence of it," the official told CNN. "It's a closed society, but at this point we do not believe it's true."The preliminary analysis of the rumor suggests it is part of a "calculated effort to disrupt the economy of South Korea at a fragile time by suggesting things are going haywire up north," the official said.
Meanwhile, the official added, "there is no evidence of movement of North Korean forces or activity that you would associated with the turmoil of a calculated assassination."
Kim, who is believed to be in his late 20s, assumed the title of "supreme leader" after his father Kim Jong Il's death in December at the age of 69. Kim Jong Il had ruled the reclusive nation since 1994.
The official pointed out that even during the recent peaceful transition of power, there were signs of troops being put on a higher state of alert.
Neither Chinese state media nor South Korea's Yonhap news agency addressed the rumor in their reporting.

Can't say that I find anything about news out of N. Korea credible. Look how bad they have a strangle hold over their meda and such. By their reports, you'd think that N. Korea was the most advanced nation on the planet.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but here's what I think irks people of that persuasion: What do we have to go on that OBL is dead? The President's word is all. One man's word is offered to be the whole yardstick. No testimonials, no DNA, no physical evidence, no photos. Plus there are some blatant contradictions in Washington over how OBL was killed. I think it's very, very likely the raid happened and he was killed, though I'm less sure what the final altercation actualy was like since there are conflicting accounts between Feinstein and Obama. But the point is, What good reason does anybody have to put their faith in what a single leader says? How is doing that any different from blind obedience? I think future generations will find that chilling to think about.
No evidence? There IS IN FACT evidence. However, it is classified. Do you think we should post and declassify pictures of JFK's body too? Maybe he's still alive too? Also, Al Qaeda has confirmed it.
But here's my take on yours: The law of averages says that AT LEAST ONE conspiracy theory MUST be true. The question is: WHICH ONE?

Actually, the next heir, Kim Jong Sun (sp?) is very different in his views from his brother and late father, and goes to my friend's high school. He's all for an open, non-communist North Korea, so if he were to gain power that would be a big deal

I'm not sure if you mean that nobody cares, but from where I'm standing, if your advice was followed, we would (hopefully) have ringing ears for weeks from all the honking. Just the fact that this is being discussed tells you something is going on, whether he was actually assassinated or not – is there a plan to replace him with a more friendly puppet? Or is he not following orders properly from the PRoC and its China looking to take him out, to replace him with a more controlable version of Kimberly Jong Eew? Let's think a little...there's a lot of possibilities, the only possibility I don't see is the "ah, it's nothing."

As most of us do know, North Korea is a continuing nightmare, nuclear muscled and peering straight across the DMZ at our (at least mine) brave allies and friends. Someone here said that the North's Supreme Leader is the only fat person in that desolate land. Perhaps not a stretch, especially keeping in mind the famine in the 90's that reportedly claimed more than one million lives, utterly desperate people who swallowed tree bark and grass just to fill their stomachs. Is Kim Jong Un dead, assassinated? Who knows? But when KJU had the crown placed on his head, the truly entrenched power base in NK - the military - were having trouble keeping down their kimchi ...many thought KJU was too "liberal" and saw him as a threat to their collective tight grip on that nation and its prisoners. Lots of questions, lots of possibilites. But a suggestion: a good teacher encourages his/her students to listen, attempt to understand, different views on a given topic. You complain some of the posters here are paranoid, full of tattered cliches. My, my. Have you ever attempted to talk with just one of them? Perhaps, just perhaps, one survived the battle of the Chosin Reservoir...or another who fled the north, re-united with their family in the south, and now does radio transmissions into the darkland. Have you considered inviting a couple of speakers into your history class, people who can speak with authority, let the students conduct their own press conference? Books are wonderful, Teacher Man. But it sounds like you haven't done all of your homework.

South Korea is 13th largest economy and it is only a size of state of Indiana and has a standard of living at the same level of EU. Korean civilization is one of the oldest and sophiciated in the world that created it's own writing system that only few civilizations accomplished. Todd, misreading, assumptions, lack of clarity, dismissing sarcasm, etc., are hardly a sign of "ignorance". Point being, there is plenty of reason to believe Bin Laden was actually killed, where there's no evidence at all to say KJ jr. was, so it's a whole different story. No relevance to Bin Laden or that sort of topic due to that.

Why do you think North Korea relies on support from the south? They are still technically at war as no truce was signed, only a cease to hostilities. North Korea makes threatening moves all the time as if they are ready to invade the south.
