FIRST ON CNN: U.S. military beginning review of Syria options

Although the U.S. focus remains on exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on Syria, the Pentagon and the U.S. Central Command have begun a preliminary internal review of U.S. military capabilities, CNN has learned.
The options are being prepared in the event President Barack Obama were to call for them. Two senior administration officials who spoke about the review to CNN emphasized that U.S. policy for now remains the use of non-military options.
The focus on diplomatic options was underscored by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in an interview with CNN on Tuesday.
"Before we start talking about military options, we very much want to ensure that we have exhausted all the political, economic and diplomatic means at our disposal," Ambassador Susan Rice said on CNN's “Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
The president has also said that the U.S. is working on non-military options first.
"I think it is very important for us to try to resolve this without recourse to outside military intervention, and I think that's possible," Obama said in an interview with NBC News that aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
But the military is beginning to look at what can be done. One of the senior U.S. officials called the effort a “scoping exercise” to see what capabilities are available given other U.S. military commitments in the region.
Both officials pointed out that this type of planning exercise is typical for the Pentagon, which would not want to be in the position of not having options for the president, if and when they are asked for.
It would be Gen. James Mattis, head of U.S. Central Command, who would provide details on what U.S. military assets are available, what missions they could perform if asked, and what risks U.S. forces might face.
“The Pentagon is closely monitoring developments in Syria. It wouldn’t be doing its job if it didn’t put some ideas on the table,” one of the senior U.S. officials told CNN. “But absolutely no decisions have been made on military support for Syria.”
The two officials were not willing to be identified because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
Typically those types of options are held by the Pentagon as very preliminary plans and not even forwarded to the White House unless asked for. If asked, plans are then fleshed out with specific units to support them.
In this type of analysis being done, the military would typically look at all options ranging from humanitarian relief, to support for opposition groups, as well as outright military strikes, although that is an unlikely option, both officials said.
“This remains a campaign to apply economic and diplomatic pressure,” the first official said.
The military’s work to analyze potential military options for Syria has been quietly going on for several weeks, two administration officials confirm to CNN. The bulk of the analysis is being done by staff of General Mattis, who would be the senior commander if the President were to order any action.
Mattis’ analysis is being shared with General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who would then present options to the White House, if it came to that.
“We don’t want to be in the position of suddenly dusting off some five year old plan,” one official said. The official emphasized the work is extremely preliminary but said the military would look at a full range of contingencies.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Armed Services committee, told reporters Tuesday that the U.S. should consider "all options including arming the opposition."
But U.S. officials said that adding weapons into the volatile and violent situation is not a viable option.
"We never take anything off the table. The president does (or) doesn't. However, as the president himself made absolutely clear and as the secretary has continued to say, we don't think more arms into Syria is the answer," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

Yes it is very similar to the situation in "Wag the Dog." There was an article yesterday about a plane being searched in Lebanon that contained huge amounts of weapons, cash, credit cards and passports that originated from the US and Brazil (you can do a search on it and easily find the story). Additionally, last night my wife and I were watching Channel One from Russia and they reported that both Russia and China are observing a very different situation in Syria from the one being reported on American TV. Yes some of you might find it hard to believe but the news agencies in Russia are generally more trustworthy than almost anything you will see here as far as so-called mainstream media. The US has devolved into something foreign to most Americans whether they realize it or not.

I served in Vietnam (2 tours). My son is now 28, and I will not let my son register the draft nor will I let him join the military. I learned a lesson as a young man..Don't join the military because the politicians just play games with the military. Second, the military offers an option to many disadvantaged kids that don't have a lot of options – we'll feed you, clothe you, house you, give you a job and train you. We have had 10+% unemployment for the last 6 years, making the military one of the largest employers of our young. Now that the rest of the economy is going in the tank, unless you know a higher up at a local company, your chances of getting hired are virtually nil. When no one will hire you, want to tell me what other choice we have than signing up to the military? Given that very very few of our officials in Washington actually have children or even grand children forced to sign up to the military, they personally risk very little, while those of us in the heart land are forced to risk everything in order to make a few of the richest people on the planet even richer. Obama is too big a pussy to take account for anything so either A) we have to have another 9/11 attack here (ie false flag just like the last one), so we can blame it on Iran, B) start up rebellion inside other arab nations in order to justify us being there and hope that Iran comes in so we can attack them. or C) pre-emptively attack Iran with their nuclear program as a justification, or D leave them alone to deal with their inner-bs without our intervention. We can't do A because the American people have figured out for the most part that 9/11 was a justification for stealing Iraq's oil. We can't do C because it will start WORLD WAR 3! I guess it is true that people have a short memory. In almost every single occasion in history when the US has turned its back to people in need, we have had to pay more in blood in treasure than we would spent in intervening.
The US turned its back on Europe at the beginning of the World Wars and look what happened. The US turned its back on Vietnam when it asked for help in gaining independence from France and it soured relations into Vietnam War. The US turned its back on Afghanistan during it's strife after they beat back the Soviets and the Taliban took over. The US turned its back on Iraq after the action in Kuwait and we had to go back in to find WMD that weren't there. Intel would have been more reliable with stronger support in the region.
If you have interests in a region and we do have one in the Middle East, you better control it, or at least help your friends control it. The future is too important to let it play out. Look at Japan, we stuck with them, and now we have a foothold and presence in Asia to curb Chinese and NK ambitions.

When's the last time you saw Mexico, Brazil, Luxenburg, Finland, Belgium, or the Phillipines taking a turn?
Or how about all those Arab nations stepping in and helping one of their own?
this is how arab countries plan to hold us hostage. they maintain political turmoil in the region to keep the US involved causing us to have an additional need for oil. they inturn keep prices up, which in turn, arabs and rich americans who invest in those petroleum companies reap the profits. i rather go back to riding horses, bycycle or other source of transportation than to pay more for my gasoline.
Why worry about Syria? We have thousands of people being slaughtered south of the border. Juarez is out of control, and there is absolutely zero intervention. A U.S. soldier and embassy worker have already been killed along with bullets flying into El Paso, Texas and striking the University of Texas (UTEP) and the city hall.
One carefully targeted and well timed tomahawk missle. Just one.
Rest assured that the military has a plan; it may not be a popular one, but this dictator needs to be forcibly removed. Genocide should not be tolerated anywhere in the world.

Human beings are our business regardless of country, race or religion. Where there is genocide against the innocent let those of us with the strength come to their defense. What good is saving our country if our country is the kind of place that would allow genocide to thrive? What are we saving? I for one am an American and that means I am one of the good guys. I am a veteran and I say we help those poor people as quickly as possible. If the evil axis countries want to stop us then maybe it is time for ww3. We must not be intimidated by those who profit from the sorrow of others. We are Americans!

We can't save people from genocide and if we don't try that doesn't make us less of a human being. The truth is genocide is happening all over the world as we speak and Syria at the moment is a hot spot that is polarized. If we become a nation that is stratified into having to react to every hot spot then we become a tool for the rest of the irresponsible world that has the power collectively but sits by and does nothing. It's time for us to work on being the nation we once were first before we shoulder any more wars
One day I believe we will all have to face a greater power. When god asks me what I have done I want to say that I was a Shepard of the entire flock, not just Americans. I also appreciate this is my opinion and the wonderful thing about our country is no single person will decide the direction. As a veteran I believe I have earned the right to speak my opinion but please understand I do so with respect to all of yours. I would fight for the people of this country for their freedom and to stop the killing, but that's just one old soldiers opinion.
Well said!!! Also, regardless if they are anti or pro American, It shouldn't matter. If someone needs help against evil and injustice, we should always do the right thing and protect them; especially if you are capable of doing so.. Where is the humanity? America's military has more muscle than the whole Middle East. My only fear is that we could then engage in war with Russia as well.
Seems to me I would find a gun before going out in the streets and yelling and screaming for my dictator to be overthrown. Day after day, these fools go into the streets unarmed and they get killed. Here's a thought, find some weapons, make militia's and fight! Nothing disturbs me more than seeing some stupid guy in the street with his kids, KNOWING that the Syrian Army will not hesitate to kill them.
It is AMAZING to see these people begging for help when hundreds of them were dancing, clapping, cheering and burning American flags in the street as the World Trade Center collapsed... why are they asking for help now? Let them solve their problems the best they can... we are not in economic or social position to start another WORTHLESS fight for people who later will point to us their middle finger, regardless of the money we spend and the American lives we sacrifice.

It only takes over 7,000 lives for the US to begin looking at military options. It would only take one American life for us to look at military options. Syrians are just dispensable rag heads.
That's the funny thing about liberals...if any oppression of any sort happens in the US, the liberals are crying revolution. If it happens in some exotic place they know little about, they could care less. They clearly weigh human life based on their proximity. Absolutely disgusting.

Let the Arab countries intervene. Why should the US do everything? and then when they help out they get criticized for lending a hand.
remember right after 911, when they were chanting in their streets with lots of happiness wish us to have more days like 911. in all those arab countries they were happy about that tragic event. and some here have the nerve to claim for humanity.
Nah, I doubt the U.S. will intervene. The U.S. doesn't have any significant oil investments over there that we could lose. Also they like to burn American flags. Now is the time it has come back to haunt them. Well, we could help those little guys for a sympathy bonus but right now we really can't afford to lose any money over this so basically we have to ask ourselves the question... will we help them just because they are people but lose money ourselves or do we want to keep our tax money to be wasted on something else and let them die?
