Panetta believes Israel could strike Iran this spring

By Barbara Starr

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has come to the conclusion there is a growing likelihood Israel could attack Iran sometime this spring in an effort to destroy its suspected nuclear weapons program, according to a senior administration official.

The official declined to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the information.

Panetta's views were first reported by the Washington Post's David Ignatius, who wrote Panetta "believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June - before Iran enters what Israelis described as a 'zone of immunity' to commence building a nuclear bomb."

Asked by reporters in Brussels, where Panetta is attending NATO meetings, the defense secretary refused to comment. But Panetta told reporters the U.S. has "indicated our concerns" to Israel, according to a transcript provided by the Defense Department.

But the official also noted that Israel goes through cycles of making aggressive statements about its intentions toward Iran in an effort to pressure the United States and the West to take more action.

Iran's supreme leader issued a blunt warning Friday that war would be detrimental to the United States - and that Iran is ready to help anyone who confronts "cancerous" Israel.

"You see every now and then in this way they say that all options are on the table. That means even the option of war," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during Friday prayers in Tehran. "This is how they make these threats against us.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Thursday that Iran may be close to the point "which may render any physical strike as impractical," according to Reuters.

But just a few weeks ago, Barak suggested things were not as urgent, saying an Israeli decision on whether to strike Iran's nuclear program was "very far off."

A "confluence' of intelligence has led Panetta to this conclusion, the official told CNN, but declined to offer any specifics except noting that the United States conducts intelligence operations aimed at Israel as it does with many other allies.

The senior administration official also noted that there is a general understanding in the administration that Israel may have come to the firm conclusion Iran is developing a nuclear weapon.  Just last week, the recently retired chief of Israeli military intelligence told CNN's David McKenzie that the "Iranians have already decided that they want nuclear weapons," he said.  But he added they haven't decided fully to go through with creating the weapons.

The official U.S. assessment is that Iran has not yet made that decision, the source said.

At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus, who said he has regular discussions with Israel's leadership and intelligence head, noted that "Israel does see this possibility as an existential threat to their country, and I think that it is very important to keep that perspective in mind."

At the same hearing, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper noted the United States works closely with the Israelis and said the notion that Israel could strike is "a very sensitive issue right now."

"This is an area that we are very, very concerned about," Clapper said.

Panetta's press secretary, George Little, declined to comment on the report. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently said it would be premature for the United States to consider striking Iran.

The Israelies are the only country with enough firepower and balls to stop the crap that is going on in the middle east. The United States needs to get their act together and realize they are dealing with a country who may be a 1000 times smaller , but its also has a 1000 times more military gusto. They need to work with them, not against them. Nuclear warfare needs to be nixed.

RE: ALE. Firepower, gusto, is not what Israel demonstrates. Israel is reckless, arrogant, and at its essence racist. It considers itself intrinsically, organically, superior to its neighbors. This racist hubris of Israel is so severe, it has distorted its perception. If Israel does in fact attack Iran it will be committong a fundamental blunder. Iran is too powerful for Israel to successfully attack. Not only is Israel not capable of stopping Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons, if that is Iran's aim, but Iran has the capability of counterattacking against Israel. Israel in its history has never experienced the retaliation which will be forthcoming from Iran.

The danger for the USA lies in exactly what you are recommending: that the USA involves itself in Israel's folly. At most the USA can delay Iran's acquisition of a nuclear arsenal by several years, no more. The affect on the USA's relations with Muslim people around the world, Shia and Sunni alike, from exposing itself as the tail that Israel wags, will be a catastrophe of biblical proportions. We will irrevocably and indelibly be defined as a quasi-zionist enemy of Islam.

Don't forget that Israel has a history of war with its neighbors during last 30 years so this country must be assumed as a really big threat for the region, then look at and compare with Iran..... no war during last 30 years except the one with Iraq which was commenced by the Iraq side.... so this nonsense about the probability of Iran being a threat for other countries in the region comes from lack of knowledge, short memory or maybe the influence of fake news.... and it 's really sad to see war between countries....

Sam, is the threat of the Iranian president fake in your opinion? Any country has the right to defend itself by all means, especially if the threat was made by a country like Iran. In my opinion a true enemy cannot be defeated, and the real enemy is war itself.

One best predicts future behavior by past actions–precedents. Ahmedinajed is actually considered a moderate within the framework of the Iranian political structure. Moreover, his past statements have been grossly misconstrued by outside and unfriendly sources. Looking at Israel's past actions: unilateral invasions and continuing occupations, strangling the economic, social and political life in the Palestinian occupied lands, does not conjure up an inviting conclusion about the nature of the Israeli state.

THIS IS VERY SAD INDEED TO SEE THE IRANIAN – ISRAELI SITUATION DEGRESS TO THE POINT OF A POTENTIAL ARMED CONFLICT SITUATION DEVELOPING. PERHAPS A RFEVIEW OF HISTORY REALLY IS DEMANDED AND REQUIRED AT THIS TIME, WHEN WORLD PEACE IS SO BADLY NEEDED/ A FEW POINTS TO CONSIDER IN THIS REGARD:
    1. IRAN HAS SUFFERED FROM IMMENSELY BEING CATEGORIZED AS THE "ENEMY ROUGE NATION OF THE WORLD" SO TO SPEAK – OF THE USA AND THE WESTEREN NATIONS AT LARGE SINCE THE 1979 REVOLUTION. IRAN'S VIEW OF THE WORLD IS COLORED AND TEMPERED BY THEIR OWN REALITY – BEING LEFT WITH AN ANTAGONISTIC ANTI-WESTERN NATION ISLAMIC CONTROLLED GOVERNMENT SINCE THE SHAH'S DEPARTURE AND DEATH THEREAFTER. KHOMENINI NOW DEAD AND GONE TOO, WITH A COUPLE OF IMPROVED LEADERS INBETWEEN, INCLUDING THE REFORMIST RAPHSANJANI AND HIS SUCCESSOR – THE LATTER CREDITED WITH OPENING THE DOOR A LITTLE TO THE WEST – EUROPE AND A LITTLE BIT TO THE US WAS AND STILL REMAINS CONSIDERED AS TERRIFIC PROGRESS TOWARDS IMPROVED RELATIONS WITH THE WEST. HOWEVER, THE USA FAILED TO SEE THE OPENING DURING THE PREVIOUS BUSH AND CLINTON ADMINISTRATIONS, BUT AGAIN PERHAPS THE EUROPEANS COULD HAVE DONE MORE TOWARDS THIS END ALSO..
    2. THE CURRENT LEADER, WHO NAME IS TOO LONG TO MENTION – MOST PEOPLE CAN NOT PRONOUNCE IT CORRECTLY, APPEARS ON THE IRANIAN LEADERSHIP STAGE AS SOMETHING OF A RUSSIAN TRROWBACK TO IRAN'S 1979 REVOLUTION AND INITIALLY IS COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY REJECTED BY THE USA BUT TOLERATED BY THE LEADERSHIP OF EUROPE FOR THE MOST PART, WITH CRITICISM BEING SOMEWHAT NON-EXISTENT.
    3. IRAN'S NUCLEAR ENERGY RESEARCH ADD'S FUEL TO THE FIRE AND PRETTY MUCH MAKES RELATIONS WITH THE USA IMPOSSIBLE TO REMEDY BEYOND A SORT OF COLD WAR STAND-OFF. THE IRANIAN PRESIDENT WAS HUMILATED IMMENSELY ON AMERICAN TELEVISION BY NEW YORK JOURNALIST, WHICH INCLUDES PARTICIPATION AND INFLUENCE FROM NEW YORK JEWS. ONE COULD CONCLUDE THAT THIS IS WHY THE SNUBBING AND RIDICULE WAS SOMEWHAT HARSH. THE IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAY BE FROM ANTAGONISTIC COUNTRY FOR THE US, BUT IS STILL RESPECTED IN EUROPE REGARDLESS IF HE MAKES A LOT OF SENSE TO THEM OR NOT ON FOREIGN POLICY ISSUES. HOWEVER, IT WAS STATED ON CNN NEW OR SOME AMERICAN NEW SHOW RECENTLY, I FORGET THE EXACT NAME, BUT ANYWAY, IT WAS STATED THAT THE BRITISH GET A LOT OF THEIR PETROLEUM FROM IRAN. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT POINT NONETHELESS.
    4. THE UN INSPECTION OF IRAN NUCLEAR FACILITIES HAS SOMEHOW LED TO ISRAELI STATEMENTS ABOUT WAR THIS SPRING AGAINST IRAN'S NUCLEAR ARSENAL. REGARDLESS OF THE OPINIONS FOR AND AGAINST IRAN'S NUCLEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM, ISRAEL IS NOT A BIG COUNTRY AND IS LIKELY TO BE RETALIATED AGAINST VERY BADLY. A PRATICAL POSITION OF PEACEFUL NEGOTIATIONS AND SACTIONS WHEN APPROPRIATE, AS WELL AS KEEPING THEM AT THE NEGOTIATING TABLE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND OTHERS TO MAINTIAN PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WAY TO PROCEED. OBVIOUSLY, ISRAEL'S POSITION LACKS CLARITY OF THOUGHT AND LACKS ANY CONCERN ABOUT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND WORLD AT LARGE.
    5. LAST POINT:
IT IS BAD ENOUGH THAT THE IDIOTS OF THE WORLD, INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY THE WORLD LEADERS OF WHOM THIS STATEMENT IS APPROPRIATE, BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WILL WHEN A NUCLEAR WAR – NO ONE WINS A NUCLEAR WAR – IT WILL KILL ALL THAT IS LIVING ON THE EARTH, ACCORDING TO THE SCIENTISTS OF THE WORLD MOSTLY, BECAUSE A NUCLEAR CLOUD WILL COVER THE EARTH AND KILL EVERYTHING ALIVE. A GOOD POSSIBLE DECRIPTION, ACCORDING TO A NOW DECEASED SCIENTIST FOR NASA, AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA OF THE EARLY 1960'S TIME PERIOD, IS THE BOOK ENTITLED "ON THE BEACH", WHOSE AUTHOR'S NAME ESCAPES ME AT THE MOMENT. THE BOOK DESCRIBES WHAT COULD HAPPEN – A POSSIBLE SCENARIO IF A NUCLEAR WAR WERE TO HAPPEN. IN THE BOOK'S SCENARIO OF A POSSIBLE END OF THE WORLD FUTURE SCENE, THERE IS ONLY AUSTRALIA LEFT AS THE NUCLEAR CLOUD SLOWLY ENCROACHES UPON THEM AND EVENTUALLY ALL WHO ARE LEFT IN AUSTRALIA DIE. A ROMANCE BETWEEN A NAVAL OFFICER AND A YOUNG WOMEN, BOTH WHO HAVE LOST THEIR FAMILIES DESCRIBES HOW HUMANS MIGHT DEAL WITH SUCH AN END ABOUT TO UNFOLD. THE NAVAL OFFICER MAKES ONE LAST TRIP TO THE USA VIA HIS SUBMARINE AND SEES AND DOCUMENTS THAT ALL IS DEAD THERE. HE RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA AND HE AND THE LADY PREPARE FOR THE END. THE LADY BEGINS TO HAVE UNCONTROLLABLE DISINTARY. THE BOOKS ENDS AS THESE TWO CHARACTERS DIE WITH EACH OTHER. THE NAVAL ADMIRAL ENTERS IN HIS LAST LOG FOR HIS CREW AND SUBMARINE. AND THATS THE END.

I WAS 17 WHEN I FIRST READ THE BOOK IN HIGHSCHOOL FOR ONE OF MY ENGLISH CLASSES. I DID A SENIOR RESEARCH THESIS PAPER ON THE " MANHATTEN PROJECT" DURING FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMAN'S ADMINSTRATION, WHICH ILLUSTRATED HOW LITTLE HE REALLY KNEW ABOUT THE ATOMIC BOMB RESEARCH AND ITS DEVELOPMENT AS WELL AS ITS CONSEQUENCES. WE CERTAINLY KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI, AS THE WORLD CONDEMED THE UNITED STATES FOR THESE WAR ACTS OF INHUMANESNESS BEYOND IMAGINATION.

I WAS A STUDENT AS AN UNDERGRAD AT UF IN GAINSESVILLE, FLORIDA FROM 1982 TO1985, MAJORING IN POLITICAL SCIENCE AND HAD A WORKSTUDY JOB AT THE NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AT UF 30 HOURS A WEEK AS A SECRETARY – WORDPROCESSOR FOR 2 NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY PROFESSORS AT UF. ONE OF THEM STATED WHEN I ASK IF ANYONE WOULD SURVIVE A NUCLEAR WAR. HIS ANSWER WAS WELL PERHAPS A POCKET OF AIR WOULD SURVIVE ENOUGH FOR PLASMA OR A TINY PLANT TO LIVE UNDERGROUND DEEP, BUT EVERYTHING ELSE WOULD PROBABLY DIE INSTANEOUSLY AS THE NUCLEAR CLOUD COVERS THE EARTH.

IN KNOWING THE ABOVE, I WENT ON TO HAVE SOME IRANIAN FRIENDS AT UF AND LATER AS A GRAD STUDENT AT UM IN CORAL GABLES, FL, THE SAME, WHO HAD GOTTEN STUCK HERE AT THE TIME OF THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION IN 1979, WHEN THEY WERE ALREADY STUDYING HERE AS STUDENTS, HAVING COME TO THE USA DURIN THE LATE SHAH REGIME'S TIME PERIOD. I MAJORED IN INTERNAITONAL RELATIONS (STUDIES) AND RECEIVED A MASTERS AND COMPLETED 8 YEARS OF PH.D.STUDIES PASSING THE PH.D. EXAMS BY MAY 1997. I NEVER COMPLETED THE PH.D. DUE TO SENSITIVIEY ABOUT THE PH.D. RESEARCH TOPIC CONCERNING THE INTERNATIONAL DRUG TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES. HOWEVER, OVER MANY YEARS OF TIME, HAVING SEEN THE IRANIANS HERE HOPE AND PRAY FOR PEACE IN IRAN AND A IRAN'S RETURN TO BEING A RESPECTED NATION IN THE WORLD, UNDERSTANDING THE LARGE NUMBER OF IRANIANS IN EUROPE WHO WANT THE SAME, AS WELL AS IN IRAN, IT IS BEYONG MY IMAGINATION AS TO WHY IRAN HAS CHOSEN TO DEVELOP NUCLEAR RESEARCH, WHEN THEY COULD HAVE DEVELOPED THEIR PETROLEUM RESEARCH AND THE HYDROELECTRIC DAM RESEARCH – A PROJECT BUILT DURING THE LATE SHAH'S TIME. I SAW A PICTURE OF AT THE UM LIBRARY BACK IN THE 1980'S – QUITE AN ACHIEVEMENT.

HOWEVER, I MUST STATE THAT DESPITE THE IDIOTCRACY OF IRAN'S CHOICES, IT HAS BEEN THE BRITISH AND SAUDI ARABIA ETC, INCLUDING OTHER EUROPEAN NATIONS WHO HAVE HAD THE MOST INTERACTION HISTORICALLY WITH IRAN AND WHO HAVE THE MOST INFLUENCE. SO WHY ARE THEY NOT SPEAKING OUT???? WHY DON'T THE BRITISH ADRESS THE ISSUE????

I BELIEVE THAT IF ISRAEL AND ANY JEWISH AMERICAN SUPPORTERS BELIEVE THAT THE US WILL JUMP THE GUN AN D GET INVOLVED IN THIS CONFRONTATION DESCRIBED BY CNN AND OTHER NEWS AGENCY, THEY WILL BE SADLY MISTAKENED. THE US MADE THE MISTAKE OF BEFRIENDING IRAN AND WAS BLAMED FOR THE 1979 REVOLUTION AND OVERTROW OF THE SHAR OF IRAN TO SOME EXTENT. I DON'T THINK THE US WILL MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE BY JUMPING THE GUN ON THIS ONE. ISRAEL MAY BE PLACING THEMSELVES OUT THERE ON A LIMB AND WILL BE THERE BY THEMSELVES, IF THEY ARE NOT CAREFUL AND RETRACK TOWARDS PROMOTING A PATH OF PEACH AND NOT WAR.

II STATE THIS CRITICISM, I PRAY THAT IRAN WILL OPEN IT EYES TO THE REAL REALITIES OF THE NUCLEAR CONSEQUENCES, DESCRIBED HERE AND I HOPE THE EUROPEAN NATIONS, ESPECAILLY ENGLAND WILL DO MORE TO GUIDE IRAN IN A MORE POSSITIVE AND MORE EDUCATED AND INFORMED DIRECTION, INSTEAD OF ALLOWING FOR THIS SORT OF LOW LEVEL WAR RHETORIC TO CONTINUE AND TO PREVENT ITS ESCALATION FOR PEACE SAKE ITSELF. MAYBE THE BRISTISH ARE SUPPORTING THE NUCLEAR RESEARCH, WHO KNOWS. I KNOW THAT POSITIVE RESEARCH IS SOMETHING THAT GOES ON, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE EUROPEANS HAVE BEEN ASLEEP TOO LONG ON THIS ONE. BUT TO THINK THAT THE USA WILL INTERVENE EARLY ON IS PROBABLY A EVEN BIGGER MISTAKE ON THE ISRAELI'S PART. EVERY TIME I THINK MY STATEMENTS MAY BE TOO STRONG, I REMEMBER THE BOOK "ON THE BEACH" . I INVITE THE IRANIANS TO READ THE BOOK AS WELL AS THE EUROPEANS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. ANONYMOUS. 2/5/2012 A COPY TO A FRIEND IN PARIS, FRANCE AND IRAN.

It would be nice if all nations repudiated nuclear weapons. But that is not the case. The US, Israel, have no intention of destroyed their nuclear arsenals. Israel tacitly uses its nuclear stockpile to intimidate its neighbors and to demonstrate its superior bargaining position vis a vis the Palestinians. The US uses its military might to invade other nations with whom it has disagreements. Iraq shares a border with Iran. The US military occupation there, which hasn't quite yet ended, serves to put Iran on notice that it disagrees with US aims at its peril.

For these reasons I cannot in good conscience criticize Iran if it chooses to acquire nuclear weapons. A nuclear arsenal will serve as a deterrence to those who might otherwise try to effect regieme change through military force. A nuclear Iran will also level the playing field between Israel and its neighbors, including Palestine. That, in my opinion, is a very good thing.

However, you forget that Iran is a signatory to the NPT and is therefore prohibited from developing a nuclear weapon.

You forget that the idea of Mutually assured destruction, and deterrence, only works if there are rational actors, and at this point it may not be safe to assume that Ahmadinejad is a rational actor.

      • eric calderone

RE: Lopez. One can infer, or not, rationality based on past behavior. Iran's past behavior with regard to foreign policy compares quite favorably to Israel's. Iran has not repeatedly invaded and occupied neighboring countries. Iran does not conduct surgical strikes on its enemies. However, Israel does these things.

RE: Eric. However, Iran has made open threats against the existence of Israel, and with WMD's would have the capabilities to do so.

        February 12, 2012 at 9:30 pm |
      • eric calderone

RE: Lopez. It is disingenuous to argue that Iran's statements about the invalidity of the existence of Israel, and that the country will soon come to end equates to threatening to violently destroy Israel. Iran, like just about all Arab countries believes, with a great deal of justification, that the process that led to the establishment of Israel in 1947 was an example of Great Power politics in which the Palestinians received the short end of the stick.

Iran has not said nor done anything to give an objective observer cause to believe Iran would initiate an unilateral attack on Israel.

Furthermore, it is quite troubling that you seem to willingly put yourself out as an advocate or spokesman for Israel. Presumably, you are an American and should be more concerned with American interests than in Israeli interests.

I am far more concerned about a country like Israel possessing nuclear weapons than I am about Iran. Israel, judging by its past behavior, initiates unilateral aggression. However, Iran has no past practice of engaging in this type of behavior.

Above there was someone who stated all US military capabilities and then one under stated about how can we not win wars with our "mighty" US military. The answer is not in the military, because when it comes to military standpoint, neither Vietnam, Iraq, Extremist in other countries whether in Europe, Asia, or the middle east has militarily won. Whether our wanna go by death of soldiers, area taken, the US military wins in those categories. Where the US becomes weaker is the will of the American people. I'm not saying I'm all for war, but when your own country is in a war, support by the public back at home is a HUGE factor. WW1 and WW2 for instance, American support at home was beyond any before, and those wars ended in less then 10 years combined. American nationalism has decreased each year, and with this the hundreds of thousands of Americans dying in the world wars was less worse then the 5000 dying in recent wars.

Iranian leaders have repeated stated that the Zionist entity should be wiped off the page of history which has been translated by the official state TV translators as meaning wiped off the face of the earth.
They have repeatedly stated that the Zionist entity is a cancer that has to be destroyed along with other obscene references.
The weak attempt by apologists to reinterpret Iranian intentions is morally corrupt and can only be explained by irrational hatred of Israel rather than any affinity to the Islamic Republic, especially when they work for Press TV.

I've got an idea. Let's have a free and open debate on CNN, or any other network, presenting both sides of America's support of Israel in this situation and others. Nothing but the experts discussing the facts. And let Americans decide. I have never seen this type of debate in the American media, but I see it everywhere else I travel. And for some reason we are the only country in the world who supports Israel. Could there be a connection?

Americans: Ever wonder why Israel isn't worried about how war will affect their oil supply?? Under a 1975 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) the USA guaranteed all Israel's oil needs in the event of a crisis. This Memorandum of Understanding is quietly renewed every five years. It commits U.S. taxpayers to maintain a strategic U.S. reserve for Israel, equivalent to $3 billion in 2002 dollars. Special legislation was enacted to exempt Israel from restrictions on oil exports from the USA. Moreover, the U.S. government agreed to divert oil from the USA, even if this causes domestic shortages. The U.S. government also guaranteed delivery of oil in U.S. tankers if commercial shippers become unable or unwilling to carry oil from the USA to Israel.

Could that be because of the results of the Yom Kippur war? On 6 October 1973, Egypt launched the October (Yom Kippur) War to recapture the peninsula, which was the site of fierce fighting between Egyptian and Israeli forces. In 1982, after the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty of 1979, Israel withdrew from the entirety of Sinai. The Sinai has oil deposits and these wer given up by Israel in return for peace. Would it not have been in the interest of peace in the region for the US to agree that for this concession, Israel deserved a guarantee that oil blackmail could not be used against them? They gave of land (and oil) for peace and if that was the cost, it was worth the price.

“They gave of land (and oil) for peace and if that was the cost, it was worth the price.”

The deal was made to isolate Egypt from the Palestinians. Since then, Egypt has extorted 3 billion dollars from American taxpayers each year for over 30 years to “keep the peace.” In current dollars that’s over $100 billion. Yet, there have been multiple wars in the region. Hezbollah was founded in 1982 in response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and Hamas was formed in 1987 by Israel as a counterweight to the PLO. These organizations replaced Egypt in support of the Palestinian people. There has been no peace in the Middle East, and none will occur as long as Palestinian lands are occupied by Israel.

The CNN Pentagon correspondent has “missed” the Israeli option of strikes conducted by Jericho Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBM), lethal enough to penetrate Iranian S-300PMU-1 Surface-to Air Missile (SAM) defences and accurate enough to target and decimate Iranian nuclear facilities with penetrating conventional warheads.

The drone is certainly not a viable option.

The US has been preparing for this moment for over 10 years. Just take a look at the map: What two countries share large borders with Iran? Iraq and Afghanistan. And we wonder why Iran would want nukes? Really? REALLY?

Pakistan is more of a problem that Afghanistan or Iraq. Why didn't we invade them? Nukes. Why do we even give a rat's arse about N. Korea? Nukes. What is the lesson here?

@Buddhabill, the reason for not targeting Pakistan and North Korea is political, in Pakistan’s case political opportunism/misplaced faith.

The North Korean nascent nuclear arsenal or Pakistani “clustered” ones can be “obliterated” if necessary. Both the aforesaid nations lack effective delivery mechanisms, especially in face of robust ATBM defences.

If Israel bombs Iran then they need to be on their own and not involve the US.
The US needs to focus on our own country at the moment and fixing its problems.

It is interesting to note that the most powerful Russian navy unit, a strike carrier carrying Mach 2 jump jets arrived at the Russian Naval base in Syria three weeks ago. These Russian Planes and also the US Aegis cruisers missiles could under certain scenarios intercept an Israeli strike. During the 1956 Suez crisis the crew of the RNZN cruiser Royalist did not know prior to the Israeli invasion of Sinai whether they were there to counter Israeli Mirages or Egypts soviet supplied Badgers and Bears. The Royalist at the time was an important RN AD picket ship partly manned by the RN.
In terms of the threat to Isreal of Iran becoming nuclear armed it should be noted it is obviously Irans intention and within 3 years a sophisticated arsenal of fast medium range nuclear armed missiles would be aimed at Israel which armed with continued UK and US army downsizing and general capability reductions would put great pressure on the maintenance of Israels settlement. Obama Clinton policies are generally aimed at reversing settlements and the US Administration is furthur to the left than Bill Clintons. The real purpose of any Israel air strike will be to precipitate a much more powerful US follow up and avoid a repeat of the Bay of Pigs. There is therefore unlikely to be any prior notice.

If Israel strikes Iran then it would be catastrophic for the region. We might see al-Assad's Syria respond by attacking Israel, along with Hezbollah and perhaps even Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Israeli intelligence officials have even said that 200,000 missiles are aimed at Israel at any given time, so this could end very badly. As for Iran's response, well I doubt they'd just sit back. No, they would respond in kind, launching missiles at Israel and at key oil facilities in the Gulf region, thus driving oil prices up which would be extremely harmful to Western economies. Further, they may attack American interests in Iraq and exert influence there and in Afghanistan. An attack on Iran would not be good, they are a regional power that is growing. This is why Panetta said that Israel might attack Iran within 3-5 months: It is to dissuade Israel.

    • YouBetcha

Why the hissy fits???? Israel blew up and destroyed Iraq's weapons facility years ago and nobody blinked!!! Panetta and the new Anti-Israel Democrats are trying to set Israel up.

Suppose Israel DO attack Iran in 3-5 months [because after that it will be TOO LATE to stop their nuclear programme] America, Russia, China and the Arab world will condemn and shout a bit but they'll all be relieved – they know Iran is a loose canon.
Suppose they DON'T attack Iran before the deadline and they produce nuclear weapons? [Because Panetta – the mouth on legs – has compromised them] I hope you thank Panetta, when Iran aims the first device at Israel and the SECOND at you – the great satan!

Is there no integrity at all in this administration?

Israel, I understand is stocking about 200 nuclear warheads, maybe more. Would Iran, with one or two, attack israel? That is foolishness. All these people beating the drums of war need to remember the way we were led into an unneccesary war with iraq. Colin Powell, in his quiet moments, must still be mad at those who used his good reputation, to sell the case for war at the UN.

In the UK we don t want this messy war.

To blow up nuclear powere stations would cause many thousands of deaths from radioactive fallout for hundreds of years after. We like the Jewish people. But there is a dark side to. Zionism that is pervading the lives of Israelis and leading them to their own destruction.

Please "educate" everyone reading on how the current Iranian regime was "made in the USA". Just because there was a power vacuum after the fall of the Shah doesn't justify deflecting blame from the Iranian people which allowed Shah's regime to be replaced with something that though different, is just as bad. In addition, where did you hear the U.S. is not seeking regime change in Iran? Finally, few Americans (if any) and no Israelis will die if the U.S. conducts surgical strikes to put Iran's nuclear weapons program back 5-10 years. No Iranians that are not involved in the development of Iran's nuclear weapons program will die and even the ones that are could be spared if they dropped what they were doing and made themselves scarce in the vicinity of selected known "targets".

Whats with the threatening of closing the Gulf of Hormuz and telling the world about your peaceful intentions for Nuculear Energy and build secret Nuculear Labs. Deny UN nuculear inspectors access to Nuculear Resesrch Facilities. Your Goverment threatens the Israiles with destruction and will wipe them off the face of the map! What do you do if a foreign country send their warships close to your borders, or they attack to your passenger airplane(US vincent navy killed 281 Iranian passengers of an airplane over Persian Gulf in June 1988), or change your democratic government by a dictator one by a coup(1951) or support your enemy to attack your country, kill your scientists and always threats you, put sanction on your passenger airplanes, and doesn't allow your to export your oil. do you believe even if Iran answers to the all UN's questions, the US will remove the sanctions and pressures? for sure not. Iran has a great history and has survived from more dangerous wars that WWI and WWII. Iran also has helped Jewish people in the history. Like you I hate war, but if it come to me I just say welcome.

To answer your question: Its simple. The brutal regime of Iran will slaughter anyone standing up to it, civilians or otherwise. You are talking guns vs. rocks. As long as the movement in Iran is not supported by a solid leadership and more weapon is people's hands, this "cancerous" regime is not going any where.

I lived in Iran during the era of the Shah when Iran had good relations with both the US and Israel. My sense is that the current regime in Iran needs Israel and the US to deflect from their internal problems. So their focus is the Palestinian cause, etc.
The youth of Iran, those born after the Islamic revolution in 1979 are not politically driven. They want some of the basic freedoms in the west - going to coffee shops, listening to music, dating, dancing, equal treatment of men and women. These examples (and there are many more) have nothing to do with Israel and the US.

As a consequence, many of the educated and professionals are leaving Iran - the move often prompted by women.

For these basic reasons, the Islamic government in Iran will have to evolve to be more open. The alternative is a counter revolution - form inside Iran - a revolution that cannot be stopped even by a successful nuclear program.

BAN -What a crock! Israel were tough after 1948 when your country [America] and my country [Britain] sold Israel down the river and backed the arabs for OIL.
Many Palestinian farmers in Israel worked side by side with Isrealis but the arabs under the Grand Mufti ordered all Palestinians out of the Israeli area against their wishes. The ones who wanted to stay were dragged out and their farms burnt by their own – the arabs.

It was years before the Americans offered Israel aid and THAT was only because they knew that with extra arms Israel were tough enough to keep the arabs in line and AMERICA could have unlimited oil.

So Sonny Jim don't ever say the Israeli's need YOU. It was YOU who needed them. And talking about tough , could YOU live with hundreds of missiles aimed at you and attacks on your citizens on a daily basis????

Israel Drops White Phosphorus Bombs on Lebanese women and children.

Jawad Najem, a surgeon at the hospital, said patients admitted Sunday had burns from phosphorous incendiary weapons used by Israel. The Geneva Conventions ban using white phosphorus as an incendiary weapon against civilian populations and in air attacks against military forces in civilian areas. Israel doesn't care though. They don't have and rules to follow like the rest of the vorld.

Fact. I don't hate jews. We are all human so we are all capable of destroying like a virus. With that being said. History lesson. Jews/Zionist have been kicked out of just about every country in europe at some point in history. Countries have attempted to exterminate jews numerous times. Is there a link there somewhere? And for the nut that said that israel has and does not need our help? They were saved by hitler by the western world. Also they would not have that land that they all lost in the crusades if it were not for the western world. Now I have a question. How do you take a hated people out of a place where they are hated and then put them in a place where they are hated even more. Not smart thinking unless some things might have been planned. I'm not going to put links and sites on here for my facts. Just take the time to look it up. Those people in the middle east have been at war for 1000s of years. Do you think it is going to stop all of a sudden? Leave all of them alone and let them fight for 1000s of more years. We can't risk the lives, money or emotions on this.

Although Iran (they are not stupid) can well be deterred by an overwhelming US- and Israel nuclear capacity from using nuclear weapons, Israel is apparently against all reasonable advise on the way to provoke a situation which quite likely will draw the region into major bloody crisis. Sorry, but denouncing and calling respective comments stupid is unfair and immature at least.

I am an Iranian. I think Israel is convincing USA into thinking of strike on Iran. It will be a bad mess, Although I do not like Iranian government, but I am defiantly sure they are really strong. Frankly they are as strong as USA in terms of military , so that's why any war strike on Iran might put people's lives at risk. Hope I don't see that moment, I would rather die than see people all over the world suffering from the consequences of war.

      Sorry "MaX", "Jon" is right.

      Go to http://www.globalsecurity.org/

There you can see the actual "strength" of all the world's military forces (numbers of planes, troops, ships, aircraft, etc.). Your homeland is still using 1960's era fighter planes and 1970's era technology. Ain't gonna beat ONE F-22 Raptor with 10 F-4 Phantoms or defeat an Ohio-class sub with a "couple" of German-designed subs.

All Iran's forces were videotaped for Iranian TV two weeks ago with Iran's generals and admirals talking about how "powerful" their forces are. Those speedboats they sent out to harass the U.S. Navy were lucky it's still PEACE time. *** ONE *** USMC AH-1G SeaCobra would've smoked ALL the boats seen in the video. SEAL Team 6 would've planted charges under the hulls of all those Iranian ships seen firing missiles and sunk them right at the piers before anybody aboard woke up the next morning.

And we woun't even get into what the U.S. Army would do to "goose-stepping" Republican Guards BEFORE they even got to the battlefield.

So, how come, with all this fabulous firepower, can't we win anything? 15 years against a nation of farmers (Vietnam) – lose.
10 years each against primitive Afghanistan and 'mighty' Iraq – lose.

Can't wait for the day when we actually pick a fight with someone who can actually fight back. Then we'll see some real casualties. the 5000 or so dead in 10 years will be 5000 in one month. Then we'll really hear some screaming.....

when the draft is re-instated and all you little gung-ho, John Wayne, war loving chickenhawk faggots, 'get sent for'.

Roy- How was the war in Vietnam conducted? ROE that handcuffed our military and a civilian leadership that didn't allow military commanders on the ground to do what needed to be done to "win"? The overwhelming majority or "toe-to-toe" battles/engagements in Vietnam resulted in a decisive U.S. victories. Gulf War (90-92') a "loss"? Really? On what planet? Iraq post 9/11? What regime is no longer in-place? How long did it take for the U.S. Military to soundly defeat Saddam's standing military? What became of Saddam? We lost Iraq? More like we give the Iraqi people a chance on their own to govern themselves and they are FAILING. Afghanistan? Same. The difficulties that the U.S. had and is having in Iraq and Afghanistan have NOTHING to do with the inadequacies of U.S. military firepower, technology and proficiency. You may want to go back a specifically define "lose" in the context of military capabilities vs policy and "nation building".

Please, do all you can to bring down your insane government ,not only does it keeps your country in a state of a third world oppressive country where humans rights are being violated on a daily basis (something that sadly shares with most of the Arab world) but is also put Iranian citizens in the harms way by its Islamo-fascist inspirations. Israel has no quarrel with Iran other than the latter's perpetual hostile activities (like supporting terror organizations and radical anti-Israeli Islam all over the world) and threats. The last thing we Israelis wish a war but those religious zealots' actions don't leave us many choices. Nuclear power in the hands of the Ayatollah regime is a bad day for the entire world. The thing that always amuses me is how most people who comment on foreign policy issues never bother to look at geographical maps of the world. HELLO !

Our military has a rather large group of 18 – 28 year old kids trained and in command of rather large and powerful killing weapons, including nuclear devices. Some of those in that age range are currently guarding the nuclear stockpiles in bunkers around the nation. There are very FEW 40+ year olds actually standing post with a rifle outside of our nuclear bunkers. These facts are true in ALL the nations that currently have nuclear devices. Our troops get better pay, training and opportunites (in and out of service) than most of the world's military forces so they have an incentive to "do the right thing" and NOT allow unauthorized people access to those nukes.

Pakistan is different. Same troops with same rifles guarding THEIR nukes. But, the "opportunities" inside and outside THEIR military is reportedly based on "who you know" and "who'll be in power" next week. THEIR troops have families and their own dreams same as our troops – but without any "guarantee" those needs or dreams can be met.

PAKISTAN SHARES A BORDER with IRAN !

What? Does anyone honestly believe that (attack or not) Iran won't simply BUY off one of those young Pakistani guards to "look the other way" while the truck(s) back up to the nuclear bunker loading dock, loads up and then gets on the "Makran Coastal Highway – N10" (Google), the "Kurumb Road" (Google) or the "RCD N-40" (Google) and drives their purchase to Iran? What? Does anyone believe Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen were traitors for the fun of it?

Nobody can "stop" Iran from getting nuclear weapons as long as:
    (a) They have the money and are willing to pay;
    (b) Some poor, young schmuck is guarding the gate who can be bought off with enough to feed his family and
    (c) Pakistan ALREADY has a finished product, is right next door down the highway, with easy road access.

Look at world maps folks. It'll become easier to figure all these foreign policy issues.
OH! Let us not get into the religious issue that the Christians, the Jews and the Hindu's all have nukes while the Muslims have been feeling kind of left out...

Israel supplies the US with intelligence? ?? There was a 3 part series from Fox news with Kirk Cameron that showed that there was a gigantic Israeli spy ring operating in the US through Converse and Amdocs corporations which supplied communication equipment in the US. This ring was being busted as 9/11 happened. Then AIPAC had fox news pull the report.

Nobody trusts you, especially your friends – you've sold so many of them down the river ou see. So what do you expect????

Last week a bloke and his girlfriend left UK to go on holiday to America. On reaching America, he was detained at immigration then deported. Why?
Because your spies in MY country England had picked up his tweet saying he was so looking forward to his trip he intended to destroy America! Now in England young people go to a club or a bar and say they are going to get wasted; wrecked or destroyed which means have a reallygood time. If they go to a party they say they're going to destroy it – again it's like they say something is "wicked" if it's really good.

He also said his dream would be to dig up Marylin Monroe and bring her home!!!!!!!! They deported him for that too. Come on!

But your spies said he was a threat and intended to destroy America. What with, his visa card????? How come the 9/11 terrorists lived in USA and trained to fly planes there and nobody noticed? Because real terrorists don't brag on TWEET you morons! Streuth – only in America.

Iran need not "develop" any nukes – they can go next door to Pakistan and BUY or STEAL them. Look at the MAP people.

The same way that you can DRIVE to Philly and get a steak sandwich, DRIVE to New York to get a "real" Italian pizza, DRIVE to Colorado to go skiing, they can DRIVE to Pakistan and get a nuke. DUH!

OH! And they're both MUSLIM countries. Christian countries have nukes; the Jewish state does; the Hindu state does.

What? Do ya think the Muslim states MIGHT feel left out of "The BIG Game"?

To attack Iran to keep it from having nukes is ludicrous. They WILL get them, one way or another. And they WILL USE them, especially on Israel and the U.S. The only thing that would hold them back is that nuking Israel will also destroy the Dome of the Rock, Islam's second most-holy site. Even that may not be enough to stop them, though.

Being nuked back isn't Iran's concern. Ahmadinejad has said he dreams of Iran becoming a "martyr state." To do the "mutual annihilation" thing doesn't bother them at all.

In point of fact, it's almost inevitable that somebody will nuke somebody, and fairly soon, too. What is really surprising is that it hasn't already happened. It's particularly alarming to see so many Americans who would "push the button" gleefully. That kind of mindset is sick.

Iran claims it doesn't conquer people? What do they call the invasion – and conquest – of Iran itself? It WAS the Persian Empire, with a long and often venerable history. They were Zoroastrians, not Muslims. They were not Arabs, either, but detested the Arabs. Now their land is an Islamic State, and ruled by Arabs, who have also tried to dilute Persian blood with Arab blood – most often through rape. It's called "Arabization," and is an official government policy in the Sudan – look it up, along with "Islamization," yet another Sudanese policy which is a policy to force conversion to Islam. Please note that Iran and Sudan (despite sectarian differences) have been allies for years. The Arab Muslims who conquered Persia have thoroughly "Arabized" and "Islamized" the people there. The Sudan is merely the only one that touted these "policies." Iran fully subscribes to them, though they'd never admit it to US infidels. Google those two terms to learn more.

Back in the '90's, when I first began studying Islam, Sudan was mining uranium for Iran. Back then, Iran made no bones of the fact that they were SLATHERING for nukes. Today, they say it is against Islam. ??? If it's against Islam now, surely it was also against Islam in the '90's. So what changed? Obviously Islam didn't change between then and now. It was the need to hush up the ambition for nukes that "changed" things. Iran still wants nukes. My info about this came from the Reader's Guide at the library, so anyone who wants to check it out can still do so.

Attacking Iran, however, can't yield the desired result of ending their quest for nukes. It'll only fire them up. But what it WILL do is set off repercussions that could put the whole world into a major war. If they get their nukes, it's very likely they will blow up Israel. But they'll be able to do it anyway, in due time, no matter how much Israel attacks them, or what other countries join in. Israel is almost as good as nuked – it's only a matter of when. But the U.S. is almost as good as nuked, too. We simply don't want to think about it. Does it make sense to nuke first? No. That only moves the timeline closer, and won't keep us from being nuked.

One thing I've learned about Muslims is that they tend to be quite predictable. Their religion is so absolutist that it makes them that way. I've predicted, many times, what Muslims would do, and have yet to be wrong. It isn't soothsaying. It's knowing what makes Muslims tick. But it's as ugly as anything can be.

It's not the possession of nuclear bombs that is bad; it's knowing there really ARE people (Muslims, of course, but not ONLY Muslims) who would USE THEM. Worst of all is knowing there isn't a single thing we can do to stop them.

It's enough to make me kind of glad I'm nearing the end of my days, rather than being in my youth. There's at least the hope that I won't have to watch these things happening. I've had enough, forever, of the evil mankind is capable of. It just gets worse and worse, and has even infested my own homeland. Nature itself has probably taken note of it and put humanity on its "hit list." Nature doesn't try to help species survive after they've become nonviable. No viable species preys on its own kind, as ours does. And Nature has all the time in the world to make us extinct. We're doing such a good job of destroying ourselves, though, Nature may just wait for us to do ourselves in.

The best analogy for Israel is that they are like that old saying about what you're supposed to do when you go to prison and are surrounded by hostiles. You don't provoke, but the first incident where someone messes with you, you have to kick some behind to prove you mean business and you're not going down without a very serious fight.

Naturally, the common people don't want war...But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship....voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

The best analogy for Israel is that they are like that old saying about what you're supposed to do when you go to prison and are surrounded by hostiles. You don't provoke, but the first incident where someone messes with you, you have to kick some behind to prove you mean business and you're not going down without a very serious fight.

Not only does white phosphorus burn through a victim’s organs, but the smoke that comes from such burning severely irritates lung tissue, adding injury to injury.

Had they not done that, Saddam would have developed nukes long before he invaded Kuwait. Just think of where the world would be had Saddam actually developed nukes. I am 68 years old and I fought in Nam. What is being proposed is an act of war. Jon and the rest of the bomb Iran idiots don't seem to realize that this will not be over when the nuclear facility is up in smoke. Iran has $ to act in a manner that will make Bin Laden's group look like the bench players. Given the protest over Nam, the real question for all that have sons and daughters who can join or are already in the military is "Would you want them to fight in a war that Israel starts?" I personally would be willing to take up arms before I would let any member of my family be forced to defend Israel. If America thought that was protest over Nam, let this crap start.

A “world without nuclear weapons”? Ha-ha-ha. As long as inbred paranoids with nukes – i.e., Israel – remain armed to the teeth and aren’t even required to submit to weapons inspections, that’s a vivid fantasy. Until the Jews disarm, the world isn’t safe. Trivia: Israel came dangerously close to using nukes against Egypt in 1973 – odd, since Egypt didn’t have any nukes.

[3] The last WAR you fought for Israel according to you was Iraq!!!! Grow up. 9/11 happened because YOU had a military base in Saudi Arabia [sacred arab ground to OBL ] and you USED that arab country to kill other arabs. The fanatics tied their hatred of Israel to that wagon – Israel were NOT the prime reason.

The US can't commit to another war at this time. We are just getting to the point where our operations are coming to a close in Afghanistan and our economy is finally getting a few gasps of air. If the US put boots on the ground in Iran they would do the same thing Saddam did in 2003: Tell his troops to go home. Fight an insurgent war and get the US to spend as much money and shed as much blood as possible. If we have learned anything from the last century it is that conflict will get us nowhere. If mankind is to progress, we'll have to learn how to compromise and resolve conflicts through non-violent dispute resolution.

Agree with you. You expressed some common sense. But that's not the problem; the problem is that the US is not getting into another war (I think it knows better), instead, Israel is getting the US into another war.

The wise thing would be for the US to tell Israel to go fight its own war, since it has been itching to fight for a long time. But how many US politicians have the backbone to say that to Israel? Can you spell A-P-A-C? That's the problem.

Anybody else find it odd that Osama bin Laden initially denied involvement in 9/11 on camera. A "confession tape" was then later "uncovered" by US forces in some random house. In the tape, it doesn't even look like bin Laden. The fraud (Jewish looking) is also using his right hand whereas the real bin Laden was left handed. Thus this is the ONLY "evidence" connecting 9/11 to bin Laden. Israel was the ONLY country to benefit from 9/11.

On 9/11 Muslims had spontaneous street parties and fireworks to celebrate in London, Birmingham and other city areas in Uk !!!!! And in those areas they had posters of the twin towers with gloating messages attached.

The British, Jewish and other ethnic areas were paralyzed with shock – then SO angry it wasn't true. And ALL of us wept for America. As when Kennedy died we can all remember exactly where we were when we got the news and we will NEVER forget your suffering. Not ever.

The footage of Muslims celebrating was proven to be a hoax as the Bin laden confession tape. The day Bin laden was "killed" was basically the final nail on the coffin of the 9/11 official fable.

Why US keeps playing the anti-Iran / propaganda game with Israel? It here somebody so stupid to believe this is an actual "leak"? I now we got a lot of Jews and Israel descents in here, but we got also Arabs, Indus, Chinese, etc..., and we don't keep taking part to this insane level in their disputes. It is so freaking unfair that because Jews keep cheapening so much money, and own the Media, everybody else keep drag on this madness of violence. If they don't want to be hated by the Arab world, let the Arabs alone in the first place, and return the land you have been stealing for the last 40 years. El stupido – 76 UN countries voted to give Israel AND Palestinians DUAL ownership of that "Stolen" land in 1948. They offered BOTH of them Statehood. Israel accepted; the Arab world spat on the offer and told the UN to put it where the sun don't shine! Theysaid they wouldn't take it until "....every Jew is driven into the sea........."

The Israelis did not steal any land. The land was given to them by the United Nations. And it is so tiny that it would not be big enough to qualify as a national park in most countries. Your obvious ignorance is so profound that I doubt if you could even find Israel on a map. It is hard enough for informed people to find it because of it's size. So stop polluting the internet with your malicious untruths, while the people on the ground which is rightfully theirs have to worry about their survival every single day.

Without an invasion force on the ground, Iran will continue the enrichment processes that are in deep earth facilities keeping Iran's nuke program alive. Israel ran a covert nuke program fooling inspections into thinking that their facility was creating civilian power services. They were building weapons, what is Iran to think. Solar and wind power would show how forward thinking the country could be. Iran's push for nuke power service is backward thinking, it's a mistake.

If it came right down to the facts, the Israeli Air Force could probably take out all of Iran. Iran may be a huge nation, but in her history, Israel has lost maybe one or two fighter jets. USA sells Israel Air Force fighter jets and what does Israel do? They build on the technology and make these USAF jets better. You Americans can say whatever you will, but Israel's Air Force is looked up to here in the European and Asian regions. Nobody wants to mess with the Israeli Air Force. Why do you think Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel years ago? And even Syria would like to engage in peace negotiations with Israel, however, they first need to oust their ruthless dictator, al Assad. I think it's hilarious how Israel purchases these sophisticated weapon and fighter jets from the USA, only to build upon the technology and make it better than what the USA already has. God will always protect the Holy Land – Like it or not!

It has supported groups fighting it's enemies, but so has the US, Russia, Israel, China, etc. It's only wrong when the Iranians develop weapons to defend themselves against daily threats of war and regiem change. If the US is really concerned about liberating people from dictators then they can focus on the likes of Burma, and North Korea. Or even the US where the corporations have made the rest of the population indentured servants.

"woe is me, woe is me, we send one rocket and hey send back three." the result is the arab chant sung 5 times a day: "woe is me, woe is me, everyone but us is the cause of our misery". what they should be singing is "woe is me, woe is me, we are our own worst enemy."

Israel is the bravest nation in the world! A tiny little state less than 50 miles wide, surrounded by its enemies who want nothing more than its destruction and people dead. No, I do not agree with every political move it makes within its own borders – there are many displaced Palestinians who have some tragic stories to tell (truly tragic). BUT – outside its borders – leave Israel alone, and it will leave you alone. Don't threaten wiping it off the face of the earth and it won't feel the need to make strategic attacks against your nuclear arsenal.

Whether the Jews are a race or not depends on how you define “race.” I believe that they are indeed a race, especially since a branch of the U.S. government (i.e., the Census Bureau) has, by default, labeled them as a race. Furthermore, as someone once said, “they act like a race.” Anyway, Ashkenazim Jews (i.e., most Jews) are so inbred that there are “Jewish diseases.” What more evidence do you need that they’re a race? Sadly, since the Hitler era, few scientists are willing to call them a “race.” (One Jewish trait that has always fascinated me is ugliness. Jews are not handsome people. Many of them resemble rodents, with large noses and ears). Race or ethnic group, Jews are big trouble.

By exposing Israel's likely plans, Panetta does in public what he can't do behind the scenes–put the brakes on Israel's plans by taking away their veil of secrecy. It also serves to insulate the US from criticism or accusations of complicity in the strike if Israel goes ahead and does in anyway.

The radicals believe they will go to heaven for doing so. They should never be allowed to obtain WMDs. The Iranian people may not be radicals as whole but there are many there that can seize control once the weapon is built.

Being an ally of Israel these days has a lot in common with keeping an uncontrollable vicious dog. In historical terms, our alliance with Israel hasn't done that country good either. Sixty years after the European powers declared a Jewish homeland in territory where none had existed for nearly a thousand years, Israel has made no progress at all in civilized treatment of Israeli Arabs and getting along with her neighbors. And all this smells a lot like the cynical, disinformation riddled run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

the UN ,which i think, includes more than just "European powerd" recognized israel as a state 63 years ago, upon which the arabs attacked israel in order to wipe it out. the Israeli arabs that didnt clar u to make way for he arab armies became citizens. they participate in the political process and have all the rights of jewish Israelis. can you say the same for any, any arab country? what is your problem besides cowardice and anti semitism? or are you simply a palestinian whiner

Palestine and Isreal are two sides to the same coin. Neither of them are interested in, or have made any effort toward peace and they both blame each other. Its about time we drop Isreal like the hot potato it is, and let them fend for themselves.

I am all for getting the party started and taking care of this situation sooner than later.

I am Christian but have Muslim friends and I tell them I do not support America's policies regarding the Middle East. Israel is greedy, corrupt and would take away the last bit of bread from the Arabs if they could. They certainly do it here. (Look at Jews like John Paulson and subprime mortgages). For all you pathetic, uneducated, anti Israeli, Jew hating, idiots out there, here is a lesson in history for you all to think about!!! The Israeli's took out Iraq's nuke site in 1981. Had they not done that, Saddam would have developed nukes long before he invaded Kuwait. Just think of where the world would be had Saddam actually developed nukes. Learn your history before you shoot your mouth off

Its Panetta's idea not Israel. The Administration is busy with the election and a war with Iran is the least Obama wants. So Israel will do the job for the US. Its about time anyhow for Israel to pay to back the US generosity. A risk that might end Israel existence in the area that if Iran retaliate even with its conventional weapons. Syria has said that it has its missiles aimed at Tel-Aviv and the airport, so Iran. Its going to be a mess.

Pretty sure they've been through this before, what was it, six Arab nations? All at once? Israel kicked all their asses and took their land and now they want it back? I'm proud of our support for Israel, they're having a well-earned feast and the muslim world over at the kiddie table is sitting there with their arms crossed, stomping their feet, going on and on about how unfair it is and how everyone's being so mean to them.

The United States should cut all ties with Israel. How much of our tax money goes to support their terroristic regime? And for what? To make us even more hated in the Islamic world? If Israel wants a fight, let them have it by themselves. We should strive for peace and let those who want war alone if they will not listen.

Not as much as the US tax payer's money that goes to support Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt... The reality is that 80% of US aid to Israel is paid straight back into the US economy, creating thousands of jobs as well as providing security for US citizens and their military. If you have a problem with the Islamic world hating Israel you should be pointing your finger at them and their radical ideology rather than believing all their propaganda.

No rational person or nation would want an Iran with nuclear weapons. The only question if they continue is when Israel will do the world a favor and take them out. All of Europe even the Chinese and Russians would be on our side if Iran persists.
