Panetta believes Israel could strike Iran this spring

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has come to the conclusion there is a growing likelihood Israel could attack Iran sometime this spring in an effort to destroy its suspected nuclear weapons program, according to a senior administration official.
The official declined to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the information.
Panetta's views were first reported by the Washington Post's David Ignatius, who wrote Panetta "believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June - before Iran enters what Israelis described as a 'zone of immunity' to commence building a nuclear bomb."
Asked by reporters in Brussels, where Panetta is attending NATO meetings, the defense secretary refused to comment. But Panetta told reporters the U.S. has "indicated our concerns" to Israel, according to a transcript provided by the Defense Department.
But the official also noted that Israel goes through cycles of making aggressive statements about its intentions toward Iran in an effort to pressure the United States and the West to take more action.
Iran's supreme leader issued a blunt warning Friday that war would be detrimental to the United States - and that Iran is ready to help anyone who confronts "cancerous" Israel.
"You see every now and then in this way they say that all options are on the table. That means even the option of war," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during Friday prayers in Tehran. "This is how they make these threats against us.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Thursday that Iran may be close to the point "which may render any physical strike as impractical," according to Reuters.
But just a few weeks ago, Barak suggested things were not as urgent, saying an Israeli decision on whether to strike Iran's nuclear program was "very far off."
A "confluence' of intelligence has led Panetta to this conclusion, the official told CNN, but declined to offer any specifics except noting that the United States conducts intelligence operations aimed at Israel as it does with many other allies.
The senior administration official also noted that there is a general understanding in the administration that Israel may have come to the firm conclusion Iran is developing a nuclear weapon. Just last week, the recently retired chief of Israeli military intelligence told CNN's David McKenzie that the "Iranians have already decided that they want nuclear weapons," he said. But he added they haven't decided fully to go through with creating the weapons.
The official U.S. assessment is that Iran has not yet made that decision, the source said.
At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus, who said he has regular discussions with Israel's leadership and intelligence head, noted that "Israel does see this possibility as an existential threat to their country, and I think that it is very important to keep that perspective in mind."
At the same hearing, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper noted the United States works closely with the Israelis and said the notion that Israel could strike is "a very sensitive issue right now."
"This is an area that we are very, very concerned about," Clapper said.
Panetta's press secretary, George Little, declined to comment on the report. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently said it would be premature for the United States to consider striking Iran.

Everyone is talking about war, but no one seems to be considering the consequences. The rest of the world for the most part, does not want Iran to have nuclear weapons. For some there is no question, they will act to stop Iranian ambitions. It is clear that Iran understands this, but what they don't understand is why they are safe from attack at present and how that can change.
A war with Iran is certain to be disruptive to the oil supply from the Gulf. If Iran is attacked, the sea-lanes will be shut down, which means no oil from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Quatar, Bahrain, and so on. This would be highly damaging to Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Europe. This is why there is no war now, the world understands there would be a high price to be paid to attack Iran.
On the other hand, countries like Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia and Egypt will not accept a nuclear Iran and will act if they are forced to. Iran isn't a real threat to attack any of these countries, but they now have the missiles and they could have the bomb. It is ironic that the thing they want the most is the only thing that will ensure their destruction. Israel will accept other consequences rather than accept Iran with the bomb, and this same calculation is going on in Europe and the US.

Well said. However, I feel the need to interject in one particular area; your presumption that oil transportation would be hindred is correct, but I believe it would be extremely temporary. Firstly, no other nation bordering the gulf would join Iran in conflict with the USA. Rather to the contrary, and as you point out, it is to their great advantage that the straight of Hormuz remain open. For this reason, if for no other, bordering nations will support the cause of the USA. Iran will have no real allies that matter. Secondly, the USA has the most powerful and technologically advanced military in the world, bar none. Israel is not far beyond, thanks to its affiliation with the USA. There is no country in the middleeast that could wage a war with the USA, nor is there a conglomeration of middleeastern nations that could do so. If there were, Israel would already have been attacked. A war with the USA would leave the opponent devastated very, very quickly. It would be embarassingly one-sided, as the wars in Iraq were. Remember the image of Iraqi solders running through the desert in their underwear, begging to surrender to US tank crews? It would be very similar to that.
Fanatical Muslims can wage war against the USA only through things like strapping bombs to women and sending them into crowded marketplaces. The USA struggles against that kind of warfare precisely because it will not stoop to that level. Granted, there are always examples of troops behaving poorly and even committing crimes against the people, but those men do not represent the USA or its military as a whole.
This is relevant to your comment in that a war with Iran, at least insofar as it impacts oil passageways, will be a much more conventional fight. There will not be women in burkahs with hidden bombs strapped to them randomly rowing boats around the Persian Gulf. There will be fighter planes, bombers, cruise missiles, and navy vessels. In that fight, there is not a nation on earth that can withstand the full onslaught of a resolute US military. Iran will have no navy left, no ground installations, no bases, no silos, no tank yards or airstrips, no radar stations -NOTHING. We won't even have to get that close to accomplish that. Opening Hormuz will not require boots on the ground nor humvees in the streets, and so the fanatics will have no ability to use their suicide tactics. If the USA learns its lesson and focuses on disabling Iran rather than occupation, it will succeed very quickly and order will be restored to the world's oil markets very quickly.

I don't excuse Israel, however, when it does things that are inhumane or just flat wrong. Israel HAS helped people in Gaza and West Bank, but being Muslims, nothing is ever enough. Israel, and Jews, aren't always the world's most admirable people. Their own faith is one which makes the odious claim that they are the "chosen people of God." It is not an inclusive faith but an exclusive one. But at least it doesn't indulge in loathsome proselytizing; there's at least THAT. But Judaism is still a kind of "club" of the "sifted few," and it is no surprise that people hate them for that. I don't have to like the attitudes of Israelis to recognize their right to exist.
Islam, however, is far worse. It not only proselytizes, but forces conversions by the sword (and don't quote me the Quran that says "there shall be no compulsion in religion," because that text DIED the day Muhammad forced his own first conversion).
Many texts quoted to us by Muslims sound benign, but they neglect to tell us that they also went dead, just as the forced conversion text did. But we believe those texts are still binding on Muslims, when they haven't been for over 1400 years. Do you see why it is important to study Islam on your own? They can use their own holy texts to lie to us. Unless you know how the benign ones died. Any text that Muhammad later violated – died. He is "the perfect Muslim," so whatever he did was good. And he did some pretty loathsome things – nor need I remind you of his sexual inadequacies that have now drawn multitudes of men who share them. Islam is a magnet for such men.
Islam is about CONQUEST. I've studied it since 1994, and have the standing to say this. I know Islam better than many Muslims do. All that "peace and tolerance" stuff has come from Muslims – who lie.
Anyone who studies the Islamic core texts KNOWS that Muslims lie.
Lying to infidels is downright righteous in Islam. We always go to them, or their clerics and scholars, with our questions about Islam – which is the stupidest possible thing to do, because every last one of them will LIE to us.
I once went to Muslims for answers, too, but they felt contrived to me, so I went to the horse's mouth, to Islam ITSELF; its own holy core texts. After studying those, all my confusion went poof. And my hair stood on end.
Islam is worse than an obscenity, worse than an abomination – it has no value for human life whatsoever – not even the lives of its own believers matter. ALL that matters in Islam is to take over the entire globe, to conquer it and put every human under Sharia. And, BTW, there is only ONE form of Sharia, not the "extreme" versions we're told about on the news. Islam doesn't NEED extremism; it already IS that way.
But Muslims aren't the only liars. Our own governments and media lie to us, too – mostly the oil, of course, but often out of ignorance. They, too, consult Muslims, and get the lies, which they then pass on to us, adding to our total confusion. Studying their core texts, and totally ignoring Muslims as a source, removes all that confusion. It leaves you with the reality – and ONLY the reality – of Islam. Which is flatly terrifying and nauseatingly gross.
So while I dislike religious states – including Israel – as a matter of basic logic and principle, it is the Islamic ones which are the most deadly threat to the world. They can point out the flaws of Israel until they're blue, but it doesn't change the fact that THEY, the Muslims, are the ones who have the most odious of all possible agendas. They will stick at nothing to achieve global domination – nukes, genocides, slavery, atrocities, sadism – there ARE no rules.
We're busy talking about potential attacks on Iran, distracting us, while the world's Muslims are almost ready to conquer all of Europe – from both within and without. YOU figure it out – the mobilization is going on right in front of your eyes, so you ought not need me to point out the details for you. It is YOUR cute little habit of preferring ignorance and denial to reality that is ringing the death-knell on Europe. This is what makes the free world so vulnerable to what Muslims have in store for us all.
ONLY by educating ourselves about Islam can we remove this vulnerability. They're not quite ready to take over Europe, but if pushed, they probably could pull it off right now. So we don't exactly have the luxury of a whole lot of time to study Islam and learn about the reality of it.
Take NOBODY'S opinion as valid, not even mine. The best knowledge – the kind you can't "blow off" – is the kind you dig out for yourself. Does anyone else tell you not to take their view on this? LOOK at the population figures showing how many Muslims are already in-residence in the countries of Europe. LOOK at a map showing N. Africa and Europe, and guess what they might do once these new Islamic States have solidified and beefed up their military. Then figure out how they might decide to USE this. I only accepted the things that Islam ITSELF says Islam IS. FYI, I began this study because I believed, all my life, that Islam was about peace and tolerance. As more and more Islamic terrorism occurred, I found myself with doubts. I wanted reassurance, so I asked Muslims, who gave me irrational answers, so I went to the source.
I did NOT find the reassurance I was seeking. Are you telling me that Islam's own scriptures were telling me lies? I'd find that hard to swallow.

We should be doing exactly what they are doing – we should be investing trillions (like the Chinese and India,) in fast reactor technology, renewables, and exporting that technology all over the world. Trust me when I saw a lot of Arab countries are probably secretly wanting Israel to strike Iran as well although they may put up some mock protest publicly. To reach Iran their warplanes or cruise missles will also need overflight access through the airspace of Jordan, Saudi and perhaps Iraq as well.

Isreal is a foreign country with a formidable army. We spent 11 years in the ME and achieved nothing. Given how Iran reacted to the attack by Saddam, it is obvious the US will suffer a massive counter attack from Iran. While the moats around the US will prevent a physical attack on the homeland, Iran can easily destroy all the oil infrastructure in the ME, sending the price of oil to the moon for at least six months if not longer. And when the price of oil is well over USD 200/bbl and rationed, how much food will be transported in the US?
Attacking Iran is a huge risk and Americans should think very carefully about how badly they want war with the ME and possibly China and Russia.

I have lived in Israel for 15 years and have seen close up how the jewish majority treats the non-jewish minority, mostly arabs, both muslim and christian. One of the ways that I have always described life in Israel to folks back in the States is that it is very "Americanized", not Westernized but Americanized. One of the many reasons that I use that term is specifically because minorities in Israel are treated, at the national level, much how they are in the US. Everyone has the same rights and privledges regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, etc. Arabs are elected to the Knesset. The number of arab students in Israeli universities is proportional to their population (look it up). There are arab policeman, techers, bnusinessmen, etc. The doctor on the Kibbutz i lived on was arab Palistinean (and he was a very good doctor), educated and trained in Bir Zeit University (built in the West Bank for the Palestineans by Israel).
That said, do I think that Palestineans inthe occupied ("administered" as the government calls it) territories are (were) treated well? No, I think that they are (were) treated like an untrusted, potentially hostile, occupied people but keep in mind some facts:
1. The West Bank and Gaza are NOT Israel so folks there do not have the same rights as Israelis (just like Canadians don't have the same rights as Americans in America)
2. The israraelis have withdrawn from these territories and they are now run by their own elected leaders
You can disagree with many things that Israel may do, say or act,and they are certainly not a perfect country, but the way they treat their own citizens, including all minorities, is just like we do in America – and that's about as good as it gets.
What on earth are you talking about? There is full religious freedom in Israel and people of other faiths are treated with the utmost fairness, deference and respect. Israel is a thriving democratic state where Jews, Muslims and Christians enjoy equal rights. If you had a choice of one country to live in the Middle East and were of a minority group, Israel would be the place to be.

I think the majority of Americans support Israel on this, even though they may not be vocal about it. The primary point of contention is whether we back you up or let you do your strike on your own – which you're more than capable of.
The majority of Americans DO NOT support fighting israel's battles and sending them billions of dollars each year.
It does not nothing but keep us in a perpetual state of war.

Iran is just itching for Israel to retaliate. This will trigger a nuke attack by Russian, China and India, hence Armageddon.

Get real, if Israel was going to attack would they let their enemy know? or they would rather have a surpised attack and lessen the posibility of their soldier get out un-harmed..?
China and Russia are both secular, pragmatic states. They aren't going to launch their nukes because of an Iran-Israeli conflict.
Do you not read Ezekiel regarding Gog??? It is china and russia who will be involved in the end time prophesy's.
Why would Russia retaliate on Israel? About a half of Israel speaks Russian and the relationship between two countries is much closer then that between Russia and Iran.

Well, you went down on the USS Liberty, and the men who were there are appreciative,
whats with the double standards here. why do we turn a blind eye to the nuclear weapons Israel while at the same time getting blood thirsty when Iran attempts to get nuclear weapons. What we should be doing is passing sanctions against Israel, Pakistan, India, and Iran.
Israel isn't a rogue nation, oppressing their own people, while admittedly aiding some of the largest terror groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, while it's proven Iran has provided weapons to the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not to mention they openly hate all western found form of government, want to see Israel virtually destroyed, men women and children. Pretty sure that might have something to do with it.
