Panetta believes Israel could strike Iran this spring

By Barbara Starr

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has come to the conclusion there is a growing likelihood Israel could attack Iran sometime this spring in an effort to destroy its suspected nuclear weapons program, according to a senior administration official.

The official declined to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the information.

Panetta's views were first reported by the Washington Post's David Ignatius, who wrote Panetta "believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June - before Iran enters what Israelis described as a 'zone of immunity' to commence building a nuclear bomb."

Asked by reporters in Brussels, where Panetta is attending NATO meetings, the defense secretary refused to comment. But Panetta told reporters the U.S. has "indicated our concerns" to Israel, according to a transcript provided by the Defense Department.

But the official also noted that Israel goes through cycles of making aggressive statements about its intentions toward Iran in an effort to pressure the United States and the West to take more action.

Iran's supreme leader issued a blunt warning Friday that war would be detrimental to the United States - and that Iran is ready to help anyone who confronts "cancerous" Israel.

"You see every now and then in this way they say that all options are on the table. That means even the option of war," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during Friday prayers in Tehran. "This is how they make these threats against us.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Thursday that Iran may be close to the point "which may render any physical strike as impractical," according to Reuters.

But just a few weeks ago, Barak suggested things were not as urgent, saying an Israeli decision on whether to strike Iran's nuclear program was "very far off."

A "confluence' of intelligence has led Panetta to this conclusion, the official told CNN, but declined to offer any specifics except noting that the United States conducts intelligence operations aimed at Israel as it does with many other allies.

The senior administration official also noted that there is a general understanding in the administration that Israel may have come to the firm conclusion Iran is developing a nuclear weapon.  Just last week, the recently retired chief of Israeli military intelligence told CNN's David McKenzie that the "Iranians have already decided that they want nuclear weapons," he said.  But he added they haven't decided fully to go through with creating the weapons.

The official U.S. assessment is that Iran has not yet made that decision, the source said.

At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus, who said he has regular discussions with Israel's leadership and intelligence head, noted that "Israel does see this possibility as an existential threat to their country, and I think that it is very important to keep that perspective in mind."

At the same hearing, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper noted the United States works closely with the Israelis and said the notion that Israel could strike is "a very sensitive issue right now."

"This is an area that we are very, very concerned about," Clapper said.

Panetta's press secretary, George Little, declined to comment on the report. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently said it would be premature for the United States to consider striking Iran.

I'm surprised Israel hasn't attacked I ran already! Israel certainly will do so, but I can't say when. 2012 is as good a time as any. Israel has real CAJONES and they don't take &^%* from anyone.

It's good to see that we (the US) are now borrowing Israel's playbook from time to time. NO country is sovereign if we decide you should die.......It's too bad George Bush didn't think that way; we could have taken out Bin Laden when we knew where he was (Tora Bora mountains on the Afghan/Pakistan border).....

There is one thing the Iranians don't count on that both the Israelis and the US could use in their strike against Iran that could completely devastate them and literally bring them back to the stone age; EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse)

    Here is some information about Israeli EMP capabilities;
EMP strike capabilities: Israel allegedly possesses several 1 megaton bombs, which give it a very large EMP attack abilities. For example, if a megaton class EMP weapon were to be detonated 400 kilometers above Omaha, Nebraska, USA, nearly the entire continental United States would be affected with potentially damaging EMP experience from Boston to Los Angeles and from Chicago to New Orleans. Similarly, a high altitude airburst could cause serious damage to electrical systems in most of Iran.[151]

My question, What does Iran have to counter this?
Israel IS NOT concerned AT ALL about Iran's Surface to air capabilities and they (or the US) could detonate an EMP weapon over Iran before any type of attack commences.

Also, if Iran does attempt to commit a terror attack in the US, they have to remember they are putting the entire Iranian-American population at risk of being detained; If the US is attacked on any scale and it is found that it was done by Iranians during a conflict against Iran, provisions of the Patriot Act state that civil rights would be suspended and that those with the potential to harm US national security will be interned for the duration of the conflict. Remember, the US had the capacity during WWII to intern over 100,000 Japanese Americans living in the continental US, you could only imagine how many they could detain now.

U r very ignorant to think that the people in US believe Iranian regime and the people of Iran, especially ones here, are related. This is WW2 there would be abosultely no round up of Iranians... and anyway the Iranian regime would care less for reasons I just stated. As for you electro pulse bomb u r making ABSOLUTELY no point.. Israel has hundreds of nukes that would decimate entire countries... that is not in questions here, what is in question is the economic, regional, and religious implications of such and attack and the possibility of an endless and bankrupting war.... again

ya their country and cities being bombed in effort to stop the production of energy but not resulting in a regime change, if anything an even more repressive and militant regime, is exactly what the Iranians are praying God for. They want their regime gone... a superficial attack on nulear sites only makes it way way worse for them, sanctions only hurt the people already

What a complete and utter lack of understanding of the religious ideals and zealots that run the Iranian government and control the Revolutionary Guard....it wouldn't hurt to actually research the history of Persia (even well before the revolution of 1979) before proclaiming how it absurd the notion of Iran using a nuclear weapon seems. Nukes in Iran would cause an arms race in the Medival East. The Saudis would aquire, the Jordanians would aquire, all of the Emirates would.

Saddam couldn't do that. When they filmed the "deadly biologocal weapons facilities" after the invasion .all we saw was sandy craters, rusty pipes and a few broken down vehicles,

Because about 40% of all our politicians are jewish and who are pro-israeli. America's jewish population puts the rest of the US at risk of being attacked.
The question is; why should we help israel?
About 10% of their population is orthodox, who do nothing but pray and study and spit on little girls for wearing dresses. They don't believe in military service and they look down on all non-jews as gentile (which means less than jew). Yet they demand that the US protect their xenophobic way of life. They expect we protect their lazy, self-righteous smuggish ways simply because of their victim mentality.

The likely outcome of an attack on Iran is that Iran will have to respond or appear weak. That amounts to conventional missiles being lobbed at Israel. They will probably be more effective than the one's Iraq threw at Israel, but nevertheless survivable. The more significant problem would be that it would trigger a simultaneous war with Hezbollah (Iran's puppets) in the North of Israel. That would be a more intractable conflict and many casualties will result on both sides, and probably much more in Lebanon. My hope is that Israel has figured out a more effective way to deal with Hezbollah's tunnel network. My greater hope is that they find a way to deal with this situation without resorting to a military strike

Dont forget Hamas to the south. No matter what u think of military superiority, an Israel strike would cause chaos in that region (more than already) for another 20 yrs...easy. Just look at how weak Afghanistan and Iraq is/was, we still spent 10 yrs (still in afgh.) and billions of dollars and accomplished nothing.... Just multiply those wars by 100 and thats what the Iran situation will be... pointless and result in nothing.. unless you throughly rid Iran of their regime, which would require boots on the ground blah blah blah... not fun people

Only the materials are needed. I think they already have several bombs and are rushing to build a large arsenal with which to use against Israel and us. Better to get them now. The global hate machine once again cycles through another day of threats and counter-threats, and all sides for and against Israel or Iran voice a wide spectrum of opinions.

Regardless, the facts are unavoidable: Israel, roughly the size of New Jersey, would be reduced to a nuclear sandbox after only one nuclear attack, and it is almost certainly to Israel's tactical advantage to always "strike first" rather than to strike afterwards, since afterwards, there would be nothing worthwhile left to defend in a radioactive wasteland.

Yo Drew, it would only take 1 (one) nuke to wipe out Tel Aviv. Israel has had nukes for 30 years..haven't seen any fired off in hostile countries. I really wouldn't trust Iran (present gov) to hold on to them for any significant time. They'd either use them or loose them. Taking their program out before deployment reduces the threat..a definite threat.

Since the last 15 years, Iran has always been 10 years away from building a nuclear weapon (read the national intelligence estimate). What makes Israel unsafe is not the threat from Iran. It's their pure dickishness that spreads hatred throughout the Arab nation.

Iran has been compliant with the IAEA inspections. Israel have not signed the NNPT and allowed inspections despite the nuclear weapons they have at Dimona.

The Jewish national "leaders" are just inviting – screaming and yelling = for someone to wipe their nation off the map. It is time they started behaving like grown-ups and not acting like the East med punk, stealing, imprisoning and killing at will because if they go on like that, sooner or later someone will hit them over the head in a way they can do nothing about. . If someone ever does nuke them, they will have no one but themselves to blame. Their leaders are either brain dead, congenitally stupid, blind or all of the above and for sure they understand less than nothing about global social mechanics. Stupid. They couldn't run a peanut stall successfully .

It is way past time to shut Da Zionist Jooz up and get them in line. I don't think they are dumb enough to bomb Iran but then again they are Greedy and Evil, so who knows. I just hate to see more of thier Synagogues Burning all over America and the rest of the world. It would not go unchallenged and would not go without a response and it would probably start a war.

Attacking Iran? Doesn't seem too smart. They are an observer nation in SCO...eastern Asia's response to the expansion of NATO (e.g. the next gen Warsaw Pact)...the combination of China (with the largest standing army on the planet) and Russia's nukes alone should be a warning. The basic intent of the SCO is to come to the aid of attacked member nations...much like NATO's article 5 (an attack on a member nation is considered an attack on all members). Depending on how SCO views its duty to observer (as opposed to full member) states, it could create a huge disaster...easily the beginnings of the next Cold War. SCO is like the Warsaw Pact on adrenaline...with China on their side.

China is not going to war with the US over Iran. Neither is Russia. You're dreaming. Neither of those countries has the military power for that, and their troops have no combat experience. Besides, they don't want Iran to have a nuclear weapon any more than the Israelis do. They just don't want a war over Iran's nuclear capability to add another oil-producing economy to the western alliance.

This situation is one on both sides...so, if Israel bombs their facilties this spring and just blows up some buildings, I wouldn't give it a hard time. I had the same thought but the media isn't an arm of the gov't or anything. Israel will prolly be pissed at us but you can't call it betraying. I mean, the BBC ran the plans for a british attack in the falklands and they're a news service in the country being reported on. The argentinians saw the report and ended up not believing it, thinking it was a diversion or something, making the original planned attack even more successful.

Tangent aside, you can't call it betraying Israel, the person the info came from clearly understood it was too important for his name to be attached

Perhaps because U.S. offiicials believe it is in the interest of UNITED STATES do so. This doesn't necessarily mean that the U.S. is working at ross purposes with Israel – it quite likely that the two governments are coordinating certain activities to increase pressure on Iran. My main point though is that if the U.S. government is undercutting the Israelis in this particular case, there would not necessarily be anything wrong with that. The #1 job of the U.S. government is to protect the interests of the U.S. not Israel. In many cases, the interests of the two countries may indeed align with each other, but in other cases not. Israel and its supporters rightfully claim for themeselves the right to pursue whatever policies and actions serve their interests regardless of whether they are optimal for everyone else. The United States likewise enjoys the same right.

The attack killed 34 and injured another 172. But U.S. politicians must bow to the wishes of the Jewish-American lobby, so the entire affair was swept under a bloody carpet as quickly as possible.

Israel is a small democracy in a region of Arab autocracies that have not been shy about talking about their desire to rid the world of Israel. Israel has had these nukes for years, yet NONE HAVE BEEN USED lol you conveniently forget that fact. Yeah, let's let Iran, part of the NPT(which, if you were educated, you'd know means nothing) acquire nukes when they are allies with Hamas and Hezbollah, two irrational terrorist organizations. People like Aura are horrible and really need to learn some history. It's outrageous how Israel is viewed and treated. This is why we have to prove our innocence to TSA every time we go to the airport rather than prove us guilty. The US Federal Goverment however is the biggest terrorist in the world. It just labels ita actions as a cause for "freedom" and those innoent that are killed as collateral damage.

It's an unappealing thought with Iran having a nuclear arsenal. Israel will be damned if it doesn't do anything and will be damned if it does something. Of course, there has to be coordination with the U.S. The bad thing about Iran is that it has untold numbers of missiles that can strike Israel and any allies of the U.S. For an Israeli attack to have a chance of success, it will have to utilize special bunker buster bombs that only the U.S. has. An even scarier scenario is if Israel is pummeled mercilessly by Iran, then what will happen when Israel considers attacking Iran with nuclear weapons (which Israel already has). It's a frightening scenario.

Its Israels problem. and last time i checked, they weren't a part of the United States of America. I say let them figure it out,and deal with whatever reprecussions may come their way whenever one aggresively attacks another nation. Doesnt matter, muslim or jew, christian or buddhist. When a government strikes at another, there will be a response. The US does not need to get involved in this one. And before anyone argues that Israel is the last democracy int he middle east...I mean who cares? The US does more business with China (hardly a democracy) and Saudi Arabia (a monarchy)-so who cares that Israel is democratic. The only democracy we should care about preserving is our own...and i for one, don't feel like spending any more money, or shedding any more american blood for the Israelis who offer us nothing in return. Let their military, which they brag is so advanced and fierce, do the job....we'll sit back and catch the highlights on CNN or MSNBC.

Let's say that another country declared, and maintained, its intentions to "destroy the United States" and then began a "nuclear energy" research and development program that could quite conceivably be turned into a nuclear weapon development program. Do any of you really think the US would stand idly by, waiting to see if they succeeded? And what if the US was surrounded by many other countries mildly to aggressively hostile to it? Say what you will about Israel, but it's a very small country with many angry neighbors. It's also the only true democracy in the Middle East and a huge ally to the US. I'm sure the American leaders *hope* that Israel will consult with, or at least give quiet notice, about any impending attack. But the bottom line is that Israel has the right to defend itself, by any means necessary, and especially against another country that openly declared its intentions to destroy Israel.

Really? Really? This is what we do to our allies? We announce when an ally is planning a military action? That's even more offensive than telling our own enemies when we plan to withdraw from a battle area.

Yikes. You know, I'm a moderatelyl conservative guy (deal with that, right fringe, "moderately conservative") but over the past few weeks I've watched the Republican primary and been, shall we say "disappointed." So much so that I'd pretty much come to the conclusion that if it was a choice between Gingrich and Obama I'd vote Obama. I dislike the idea of a Gingrich presidency that much. But then something like this comes along - announcing the battle plans of an ally who may be willing to fight a fight we should bring ourselves - and I have to conceded anything may be better than the administration we have now.

Israel will try to manipulate the USA to engage Iran, the USA must not engage! The USA is a wonderful country and I love spending time there. Also, if a republican gets into office they will go ahead with engaging Iran. Keep Obama as president even if you don't like him, because he sees the big picture and will make a good decision based on what is good for America, not what Israel wants.

Why do people get so upset with stereotypes? I mention Jews tend to be tight with their money, and every Jew has to come out and say it is blasphemy. Why take such offense to it? People are so weak! This is why I have to stand in the line at the airport when it is obviously the guy named Mohammad that they need to be watching! I suppose that is not fair to all the other Arabs that are doing things the right way, but maybe that is the kick in the ass groups like this need so that they try to fix their own issues! I guess it is easier to just call someone like me racist. Too bad so few of you get IT.

If Iran were only interested in attacking Israel why build missles that can deliver nuclear payloads that can hit anywhere in Europe (which they already have) or work on one's that can go 10,000 km when the only country that far away of any interest is the US. But go on believing that Iran is just israel's problem the same way you believed that terror is something that only effects Israel – until the jihadists explained otherwise on 911

Azrael conned us into the second Gulf War, as a revenge for the scud missile attacks by Saddam Hussein. Now this is con job part deux. Enough is enough, let's not be fooled a second time. If Azrael wants war with Iran, fine let them go at it alone. They have no strategic bomber forces. That's why they are trying so hard for us to do their dirty work.

No help from us. They will not attack Iran.

As soon as George Bush The Second said he was running for prez, we knew he was going to take us into Iran. Israel had nothing to do with it. The Bush family was – and probably still is – in business with the Saudi royal family and Iran was a continuing threat to Saudi Arabia. So the Bush administration doctored the evidence and swore Iran was a danger to US. You may want to believe otherwise but the truth is: Bush did it.

Israel does not fear for it's life, it wants control over the mid-east and it's oil. With that, they can control the entire world. They already have USA as their Arab killing puppet.

Israel has a right to be paranoid considering that most of its neighbors not only want to take the country over, but kill every single Jew in there. hypocrite? no, a hypocrite is launching an unprovoked invasion with the sole purpose of genocide, losing that war, and then complain about the country you tried to wipe out taking your land.

and no Israel does not control the US. to even mention that is beyond laughable considering there is quite a bit of antisemitism throughout the country (and im not talking about people who refer to jews as cheap, im talking like Mel Gibson quality stuff here). If Israel truly did control the US the middle east would be a giant parking lot. we would not be fighting with kids gloves on like we do in Iraq and Afghanistan where we have to be paranoid about accidently hitting innocent civilians, which is difficult when the enemy hides amongst the crowds and uses hospitals and schools as human shields. even the Nazis, monsters though they were, had more human decency than these terrorists.

You do realize that if you take weapons away from Israel, they are destroyed in one week. If you take weapons away from the rest of the Middle east, there would be peace. As far as Iran goes, if they get a nuke, they will use it. If not directly, then through a proxy like Hezbolah. You cannot bargain with people who value your death more than their own life. Iran cannot get a Nuclear weapon.

Here's what should happen. Israeli agents should smuggle some weapons-grade plutonium ( or whatever the bomb-making stuff is) and create a bomb. The bomb should be detonated in the city of an Arab nation antagonistic to Iran. Scientists can tell where the fissile material originates, and announce Iran made the bomb. The Arab nations unite in a war against Iran. The US supplies a carefully balanced supply of weapons to each side, perpetuating the conflict as long as possible. The US sends troops to Saudi to protect the oil infastructure, demanding a discount on oil.

lol how? With a rinky dink navy that would have to cross the entire Indian Ocean and then the entire pacific ocean? They couldn't even reach continental united states, their navy would be easily targeted and sunk far before they reached land, that is if they could even travel that far without breaking down or running out of food and fuel. Their airforce has no capability to go that far either, they have no carriers and their hardware is older model soviet designed which would also be easily taken out. There is no possible way for Iran to even attack the united states except with terrorism and terrorism can't defeat the united states. It's way to small scale to have any real impact.

It's the Far left that hates individual achievement and pursues a monolithic, conformist society where nobody sticks out too much. You, like most liberals, are intellectually bankrupt and simply label anything that is objectionable as "Right Wing"...Kind of like Hitler. The Israelis won't strike Iran without coordinating their strike with the US and other countries. There is a broad coalition of states determined to end the Islamic regime's nuclear program and, quite possibly, the regime itself. Part of this effort is making public statements to rattle the mullahs. We won't know the full story until this operation is over. Stay tuned.

Britain conquered those lands and gave them to the Israelis without thinking about the people already living there. It was a silly thing and we're still paying for it.

JB, the difference is that those Africans still live on their land and are fighting against the invading white settlers.. The ancient Hebrews had their butts beaten down several times and booted out of the region several times. Then a third party conquered the land and handed it over to the modern Jewish Settlers. Very different.
