Biden dishes on bin Laden decision

By Adam Levine, CNN

The mission to get Osama bin Laden seems to be the raid that keeps on giving for the Obama White House.  Whether it is a mention at the top and bottom of the State of the Union address or a highlight in a campaign speech, the president frequently refers to the mission as evidence of his leadership and foreign policy strength.

Vice President Joe Biden jumped on the Obama leadership bandwagon Friday when he revealed that he cautioned the president against signing off on the raid on bin Laden's hideaway. Despite his reservations, Biden said the president made the decision all alone.

Speaking to a meeting of congressional Democrats in Maryland, Biden shared a few new details about the tense decision-making process preceding the president's approval for the daring Pakistan raid by special operations forces.

Biden said that for a four-to-six week period in early 2011 only six people knew that bin Laden might be hiding in the military town of Abbottabad, Pakistan. When enough information finally surfaced, the president convened his national security staff on April 28.

“The president, he went around the table, with all the senior people, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he said, 'I have to make a decision, what is your opinion?' He started with the national security adviser, the secretary of state, and he ended with me. Every single person in that room hedged their bet, except (then-CIA Director) Leon Panetta. Leon said go," Biden recalled.

Biden told the president, "My suggestion is don't go," saying there were more details that had to be checked to ascertain if bin Laden was indeed in the compound.

"You end up having to make decisions based on the moon, will there be enough light. And we had to make a decision,” Biden said.

According to the vice president, Obama left that meeting and said he would make the decision.

"The next morning he came down to the diplomatic entrance, getting in a helicopter I believe to go to Michigan; I'm not positive (about) that. He turned to (national security adviser) Tom Donilon and said 'Go,' " Biden said.

In fact, Obama was leaving for Alabama the morning of April 29, not Michigan. CNN previously reported that Obama gave the order at 8:20 a.m. ET.  Obama boarded the helicopter at 8:30 a.m. ET, according to the White House schedule that day.

John Brennan, Obama’s counterterrorism adviser, told reporters last May how the inner circle "debated across the board," so the president could ensure "at the end that he had the views of all the principals."

"He goes around the room, and he wants to hear people’s views. And so you have a circumstantial intelligence case. And so people will see that either there is insufficient circumstantial evidence to go forward with something like this, which involves a unilateral operation in another country to go after somebody you believe is Osama bin Laden - and there were differences of views that were discussed. That’s what the president wanted to know," Brennan said.

The vice president isn’t the only who had second thoughts about pulling the trigger. Robert Gates, then the defense secretary, has also admitted he had reservations about the raid.

I should appear to even the most rank amateur political student the stage was set by many people prior to Obama coming along. Obama simply did his job by completing the final task. For doing ones duty, the performance usually merits a C. To go above the call of duty one earns a B. For duty above and beyond the call of then merits an A.

We have the best president right now for the job. He is not arrogant and brash in his decision making process like Bush/Cheney were. He has thoughtful consideration in making decision which is an important quality in a president.

    Ok folks some REAL facts:

    1. Bush secured our country and the national debt he ran up was so he could protect America.
    2. Bin Laden DID take credit for 9-11.
    3. Obama did make a difficult decision, but he is still the worst President ever.
    4. Bin Laden had a great hand in our economical collapse, but it took a long time to materialize.
    5. Iraq did have WMD. They were chemical weapons, ask all the vets with Gulf War Syndrome.
    6. Bush setup the Seal/ CIA intelligence network, Obama just had to execute once Osama was located.
    7. Biden is just using this whole thing as a campaign boost, sounds like it will work by all the idiots here who think otherwise.
    8. We did not blow up our own towers in NYC!
    9. Iran is enriching Uranium to 20%. The most you need is 2% for medical and fuel rods. They are estimated to have a weapon in 1 year. They need to be taken out now!
    10. We did not fail in Iraq or Afghanistan! Iran is the major supplier of hate and weapons to a number of countries, getting rid of Iran will be a huge positive impact to the area.

Many of you posting here really need to read more, your facts are distorted or wrong altogether.

Iran is possibly making nuclear weapons. The USA has nuclear weapons and has used them. The USA feels the need to poke it's nose into every country's business provided the result benefits Americans. Most recent wars have been a result of American hostility. Who is to be feared?

When the Chinese were killing Tibetans, why did the 'heroic' Americans not help Tibet? How about Rwanda/Syria/Sierra Leone?

      1. Bush ran up the National Debt astronomically by waging war on Iraq. Iraq no longer had weapons of mass destruction when we attacked them. The Bush administration admitted this, after they found no such weapons (nuclear, chemical or biological). After no WMD were found, we nevertheless stayed in Iraq for 7 years - an occupation that cost America hundreds of billions of dollars. We attacked a country that did not attack us. This had never been done before in our history. Ironically, attacking Iraq destabilized the country and actually provided a new haven for Al Qaeda, which had not been in Iraq during Saddam Hussein's reign. Also, the diversion of resources to Iraq, allowed a ressurgence of The Taliban in Afghanistan. So one could rationally argue that the war in Iraq has actually made the U.S.A. less safe.

      2. Bin Laden took credit for 9-11, but he was not one of the perpetrators. The person who actually planned 9-11 got a trial. The assasination of Bin Laden was illegal on several levels. Not only did we violate the sovereignty of another nation, but we murdered a man without him being found guilty in an international court of law of any crime. Obama also assasinated an American citizen living in Yemen, whose also did not receive a trial. This is an outrageous precedent! No one should be able to be judge, jury and executioner - especially when the "criminal" has either not been allowed the chance to answer charges, or evidence against them been produced at a trial. The United States under George W. Bush and Barrack Obama has spit in the face of International Law and ignored our own consitution. I don't see anything honorable about gunning down an unarmed man in his home, in front of his family, and then throwing his body into the ocean.

      3. How good or bad a president is, is of course, subjective. One thing is certain, however - no previous president has faced a Congress that has been so obstructionist. The Republican majority in Congress is so obstructionist, that they will block legistlation and executive appointments, even if the nation suffers as a result. Republicans have admitted that they will block anything that Obama tries to do. Many have opposed legislation that they themselves have proposed, if Obama happens to support it. You cannot judge a president or an administration when the Congress has aggressively blocked the implementation of any policy that the president or the administration puts forth. In fact, it's quite obvious that the Congressional Republicans want to prevnt the implementation of any policy precisely so that they can criticize the administration for not implementing any policy.
      This is criminal and unpatriotic.

      4. No one has ever explained to me why the U.S. has the right to have nuclear weapons, but other countries do not have that right. Given that the U.S. is the only country that has used nuclear weapons against a civilian population, has recently shown a blatant disregard for international law, and has recently preemtively attacked a country that did not attack it - it would seem that the country that should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons is the U.S.. Iran has good reason to want Nuclear weapons, given that threatening stance that the U.S. has taken towards it. Every Republican Candidate for president, except Ron Paul, has advocated war against Iran. It would seem that it perfectly reasonable for Iran to try to create a deterrant against a U.S. attack. Every country should have the right to defend itself and to create a deterrant against an agressive, bellicose enemy.

      • Mark

Alexander, I agree with your points. Enemy countries who have nuclear weapons pose a risk to the USA so, of course the USA wants to reduce this risk. The same goes for countries who see the USA as an enemy; when the USA has shown a willingness to go to war, even at the cost of following international laws, if I were a country like Iran, I would probably want better weapons as well.

For what it is worth, I would like to see a reduction in weapons and an increase in acceptance of cultural and religious differences.

There is no excuse for fear. The only real thing to do in that case is to kill or be killed. These ayrabs will stop at nothing. We HAVE to nuke them or they will nuke us. Kill or be killed, just like Charlton Heston in the Bible. As a matter of fact, I would think that death is too good for these sub-humans. Why don't we just exterminate them?

What a bunch of baloney. According to Chuck Pfarrer's (the acting 'Seal Team Six' commander on the raid–now retired) book, "Seal Target Geronimo", this isn't how it happened, at all. His account is much more believable of our indecisive, riding-the-fence president. When asked to make a decision, Obama was hesitant, because he was afraid of mission failure. Although the president told them to proceed, he made it perfectly clear that should they fail, he would deny his hand in everything. Needless to say, Obama spent that time on the golf course, until he received confirmation of 'success'. Should the mission have failed, he had an alibi: he was golfing, so there was no way he could have given such an order. Needless to say, 'Geronimo', the target, may not have actually been Bin Laden. Before he was shot, the women surrounding him were trying to yell, "No! This isn't who you're looking for!" This could very well indicate that Osama had actually died years ago (which is more believable, considering his medical condition), and we fell for a decoy. This could also explain why the body 'disappeared' so quickly: to avoid any embarrassment, on our part. Although the Bin Laden complex, according to the 'wives' was built 7 years prior, Obama seemed to dish out some Google Earth images of no complex having existed, prior to his presidency. This implied that it was there all along, and even Obama didn't know it was there. He got lucky, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the U.S. military to locate Bin Laden. In spite of the vast consistencies between President Obama and the folks who were actually there, Obama is trying to push a movie through, which documents his side of the story. Ironically, he wants to release it this year, just before the election. Coming for the same guy who refused us pictures of the dead 'Bin Laden', for fear of causing an uproar, he's quite content on releasing a movie about it. Yes, there's a lot that doesn't add up, and I would suggest reading that book, before anyone presumes to just take the word of a Chicago politicians. Common sense aside, you owe it to yourselves. =)

And .. we should believe everything printed in a book.

      1. Was Mr. Geronimo in the WH room? I don't think so. But according to you, he "knows" what President Obama was thinking and saying and had an "alibi" ready. You believe this? How did Mr. Geronimo know this? He was thousands of miles away. A Fact.
      2. So, the women said: "That's Not Him". Of course, you want them to say: "Kill Him. We Hate Him". That's what you and Mr. Geronimo want. But that's not what they said, and it's stupid to think they would say anything other than that.
      3. Please. We've already beat-up the issue of "was it him" and plenty of politicians, etc. have seen the pictures. Read the article about how DNA evidence was collected by a bogus vaccination campaign to prove who was in the compound.

Believe what you want so desperately to belive. It's your right. But like most "Pubs" out there - keep the facts from getting people away from what you want so badly to believe. It was the gutsiest decision any president has ever made, with enormous consequences if it had failed.

He was on a golf course - and he knew what was going on - the decision was with him, as is the presidency. By the way - Mr Fact - Here is one: Bush spent 947 days or half days at his terrorism compound near Waco, Texas. President Obama has not spent 78 days on vacation. He has a ways to go. Look something up, Mr. Geronimo. Look at facts. We have thing called "google". Give it a whirl. You just might scare yourself - and learn something.

Since the 1979 Iranian revolution and the downfall of the US Puppet Ruler the Shah, Iran has been an Islamic state. In that interval of time, 1979 to the present, Iran has not invaded anyone. Not once. People of all religions live in peace in Iran, even Jews, who find life so comfortable in Iran they refused an offer by the government of Israel to emigrate!

In the same period of time, Israel, a self-declared Jewish state, attacked Iraq in 1981, bombing the power station at Osirik, claiming it was a clandestine weapons factory. Subsequent examination of the ruins following the 2003 invasion proved Israel had lied. In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. This led to the Massacres at Sabra and Shatilla. In February 2003 Israel staged incursions into Gaza and Nablus. In September 2007 Israel bombed Syria, again insisting they were destroying a clandestine weapons laboratory. Again there was no evidence to support Israel's claims. In 2006, Israel attacked Lebanon, killing 1200, mostly civilians, several UN observers, and littering the landscape with land mines on their way out. In February 2008 Israel again raided Gaza, killing over 100. HAMAS agreed to a cease fire and kept it for 6 months until November 4, when Israel again attacked without warning, killing 6 HAMAS members, and launching operation CAST LEAD. 1300 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed. Israel lost 13 soldiers. Violations of international law included the use of White Phosphorus incendiary bombs against civilians and non-military targets. The United Nations investigated, but Israel refused to cooperate. In May 2010, Israel attacked an international aid flotilla bringing food and medical supplies to Gaza in international waters. 9 people were murdered including an American from New York.

    In the same period of time, the United States, officially a secular nation but predominantly Christian, attacked El Salvador (1980), Libya (1981), Sinai (1982), Lebanon (1982 1983), Egypt (1983), Grenada (1983), Honduras (1983), Chad (1983), Persian Gulf (1984), Libya (1986) , Bolivia (1986), Iran (1987), Persian Gulf (1987), Kuwait (1987), Iran (1988), Honduras (1988), Panama (1988), Libya (1989), Panama (1989), Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru (1989), Philippines (1989), Panama (1989-1990), Liberia (1990), Saudi Arabia (1990), Iraq (1991), Zaire (1991), Sierra Leone (1992), Somalia (1992), Bosnia-Herzegovina (1993 to present), Macedonia (1993), Haiti (1994), Macedonia (1994), Bosnia (1995), Liberia (1996), Central African Republic (1996), Albania (1997), Congo/Gabon (1997), Sierra Leon (1997), Cambodia (1997), Iraq (1998), Guinea/Bissau (1998), Kenya/Tanzania (1998 to 1999), Afghanistan/Sudan (1998), Liberia (1998), East Timor (1999), Serbia (1999), Sierra Leon (2000), Yemen (2000), East Timor (2000), Afghanistan (2001 to present), Yemen (2002), Philippines (2002) , Cote d'Ivoire (2002), Iraq (2003 to present), Liberia (2003), Georgia/Djibouti (2003), Haiti (2004), Georgia/Djibouti/Kenya/Ethiopia/Yemen/Eritrea War on Terror (2004), Pakistan drone attacks (2004 to present), Somalia (2007), South Ossetia/Georgia (2008), Syria (2008), Yemen (2009), Haiti (2010), etc. etc. etc. etc.

So, who is the danger to world peace?

First i would check some of the facts, as far as "attacks go" the US attacked Haiti? if attack you mean US troops in country for aid, but I personally believe the US has been involved in conflicts they shouldnt have been in, but avoided those they should have been involved in......Iran "should NOT be attacked", unless they attack first...and so what if they want nukes? many other countries have them.....including Israel. My boss is from Israel, and chooses not to return there, because after X amount of days, he has to become active in military again...while I have worked for him, he has shown me the tactics, he was taught to kidnap people....i dont know if just his unit, or all, but that sounds like terrorist actions to me...mainly unless any country hurts another country, we shouldnt impose sanctions etc.....or intimidate...."Give Peace A Chance"-John Lennon

What I am having trouble figuring out here is how Bin Laden who it was well known had renal failure before 9/11 survived all these years when almost everyone with renal failure dies within a couple years even with the best of medical care (which Bin Laden couldn't have been getting hiding out in caves). Furthermore no dialysis equipment was found where he was allegedly killed. Must be a medical miracle. Also it must just be a coincidence that his body was dumped into the sea so there is no physical evidence whatsoever that Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. Very strange.

My grandfather had renal failure and he lived for 10 years and wasn't a figurehead for any large funded group. Touche mister, there's your info.

      • mosinnagant

Your grandfather likely had access to modern medical care which likely consisted of dialysis or a kidney transplant. Neither of those would have been viable treatments for Bin Laden if he was hiding out in caves all these years as we are told. Furthermore as I previously stated there was no dialysis equipment found at the "compound" where Bin Laden was allegedly killed. All we have to go on is the government's word. You people act as though the government has never and is incapable of lying to us.

How, indeed? According to Chuck Pfarrer, the acting commander of the mission (now retired), we may have fallen for a decoy, who took the real Bin Laden's place after his death. This could explain why even Osama's own family didn't know about it and why the body 'disappeared' so quickly. He's written a book, "Seal Target Geronimo", which seems to contradict most of what President Obama has fed us. This makes much more sense, considering we're supposed to believe that Obama, a walking blunder, got Bin Laden? It never added up, and perhaps now we can understand why. I would suggest picking a copy of the book up. It makes a lot more sense than Obama's version of the story, which seems to be more geared at snagging ratings and votes.

I agree with you totally. I am probably one of the few readers who have served this country. The Vietnam War was not a war to be proud of. Too many lies, but it was during the time when Russia was promising to bury us, and North Vietnam was their client state. I stood up for this country, but not with hate. During WWII we hated the Germans and Japanese and our reactions to them were not always good. What we did to Japanese Americans was atrocious. But for that matter both the SS and Japanese acted that way also.
All this hateful speech by a number of you, regardless of what side you are on is just as bad of whatever you blame the other side. It seems like almost all of you need to get a fact check going on your so called "facts'. I am a Republican who respects our president and rather likes his pragmatic approach. And here we are already hip deep in this "Season of Lies" by anonymous parties, who don't want us to know how many millions they are spending for their personal favorite candidates. And YES, this article is about hyping our presidents re-election campaign. But I am going to base my vote on my beliefs and our Constitution, rather than long lived prejudices. The Constitution is a "Liberal" document. It is not a document of Kings, dictators, the aristocracy or a theocracy. It set up a form of representative government to insure the rights all, not just a few, where the ultimate power comes from the people. It is not a one party government however it is elected. So please take your hatreds elsewhere and love this country. Fix it where it needs to be fixed and support it.

Did Osama bin Laden ever actually exist in the first place? In order to be dead, you had to be alive at some point.

He was very much alive during the Clinton administration, because he was the one who let him get away. He was rumored to have died from kidney failure, during the Bush administration, and he was replaced by a decoy. Although not an ally of ours, Iran even seems to confirm this. This would also explain how this decoy could have stayed in Pakistan, unnoticed: because it wasn't actually Bin Laden.

You are right about everything except for one thing. We didn't go into Iraq to get the so-called WMD which were never there and not to get the oil. We went into Iraq to keep their oil from flooding the "open market". Saddam was under The U.N. oil embargo. He couldn't sell his oil except for humanitarium reasons. He had started to flood the black market with oil. The price of oil was getting ready to "free fall". This would have been a monetary disaster for the oil companies, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc. Bush senor was the top consultant for the royal families for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc. Bush senor had Cheney and his puppet son go invade Iraq to take Saddam so that he, Saddam, couldn't flood the oil market with his oil. This is why we have the high oil prices that we have now. It's the law of "suppl and demand". Saddam knew that the only way he could get back for loosing the first Gulf War was to make the bottom fall out of the oil market. This would make the whole commodity market collapse. We would have great deflation. Bush and his chronies would had loosed their pants also. All of our soldiers gave the altimate sacrifice for these idiots. Bush and Cheney should have been impeached and charged with war crimes.

    • mipolitic

ok since they never bombed the oil feilds and went into iraq instead , than that would mean someone was still selling the oil on the blackmarket , so who was it. where did the money go??

      January 28, 2012 at 12:41 am | Reply
      • Novelbud

There are many factors why oil prices are high.

Russia sells nuclear technology to Iran to keep tensions and oil prices high. China likes to keep our Navy obligated to safeguard the Arabian sea. America spends tons of money, Iran threatens the supply, Russia and China threaten a UN veto on more sanctions, and oil prices remain high while America bleeds money.

Next time one fills a tank of gas with Lukoil, Russia benefits.

Bush even said, "I don't spend much time thinking about him" and "now watch this drive". Cheney was out there claim all kinds of pre-credit but nobody except T-baggers bought that baloney. Give credit where credit is due: special ops (instead of attacking an entire country like Bush did twice) and a firm Presidential decision. Worked twice on those Somali pirates too. Facts, boys.

Why does Obama get any credit for this? He knows nothing about intelligence gathering or military tactics. he really did not PERSONALLY do anything. Why do you people believe that McCain would not have given the green light for this mission once the intillgence found Bin Laden. Any president would have gave the go-ahead once they knew where he was.

Secondly, you people want to give Obama credit for anything good that happens but no blame for the bad stuff like the economy. That is Bush's fault but Bin-Laden Obama takes all creidt for, even though the entire aparatus to combat terroists was put into place after 9-11 and eventually evolved and got better at their mission. This has nothing to do with Obama.

      Good questions –
      Here's why:
What do you expect the President to do, run around the world himself collecting intelligence? That’s why we have a CIA, right? Secondly, O did not have great confirmed intelligence and there was in fact a 50/50 chance of failure, fact. Yet I would have gone for it and he did. He totally has my respect, question is; would you have that kind of guts? I don’t think so or you would have never written this thread, would you?
The economy issue was started by W and by the time the Big O got into office the path had been laid and was unchangeable except by an expert that he didn’t have. Sure, he could have stopped it but he was a young, naive president that relied on his advisors that had the same philosophy as W. O just carried on policies that were already in place by W. Are their issues coming? Perhaps, ok, yes…at least I hope not…

Because it is Obama's policy to make more use of Special Forces and put more focus in using raids like this to accomplish something that Bush/Cheney would have used a major military operation for. (that has been well-established by numerous officials and former officials.) Bush/Cheney would never have planned or tried this type of operation.

Why do people not realize that? Do we need to get Rachel Maddow to explain that?

Bush or Cheney would not thought that there was any monetary gain out of a surgical strike. Bechtel, Haliburton and Kellogg Brown Root would have made a dime out of any such action. If Osama bin Laden had needed dialysis, it would not have been as easy as it was in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Someone mentioned that they didn't find any dialysis equipment in his fortress home, where did that information come from.
bin Laden never was a fighter, he had trouble firing an AK-47 which is one of the easiest and most reliable assault weapons that has ever been produced. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was one of the military leaders of Al-Qaeda not bin Laden, who was the money man.

Iran is an entire different animal. We're not dealing with a small organization. We're dealing with one of the largest middle eastern countries with a vibrant population and a democratically elected government. Have to be much more careful. Americans will not stand for another war with a country.

Have to try sanctions. Obama is doing a good job getting Europe involved and issuing sanctions. The people of Iran almost over threw the government. We have to apply serious diplomatic pressure first. War is the last option.

Bush completely dropped the ball on Iran. He did nothing other than just calling them a part of "axis of evil". This article speaks to the intestinal fortitude of those in the Obama Administration. I didn't vote for Obama but I consider the decision to go get that SOB very brave and I was impressed with the President and I still am. President Obama has not shyed away from using America's Military and he should be given credit where credit is due. I was not real understanding with both appointments to the posts Leon Panetta has held but despite those misgivings he also has impressed me with his job performance. I knew Biden was a limp noodle, this only confirms that. Anyway you slice it, we had to risk it, we had to get Bin Laden, even if it meant sending Seal Team 6 into the Pakistani Presidential Palace.

The decision to not commit US more troops to capture Bin Laden at that point was made at the top. Bush had poor judgement. He was too impulsive. I didn't vote for Obama but he does deserve credit for thinking about the consequences before he acts. The Iraq war was completely unnecessary. How many lives and billions did Bush waste???

Obama has said time and time again that US is forever a friend of Israel and will do whatever it takes to protect it. Iran (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) is smart enough not to test the US-Israel's friendship. Ahmadinejad will not be in power long...Iranian people will kick him out in a few years maybe sooner...Did you follow the news lately that one of top Iranian nuclear scientists was assassinated...?

And these guys running for the GOP side are just as bad. They know nothing about foreign policy or protecting the country. Did you hear Romney said to let the General Motors fail, but thanks to Obama, GM is now thriving and #1 auto makers once again, otherwise there would have been millions who would be out of jobs. How do you like paying over 30% of TAX and Romney pays only 13.9%? Obama's been trying his best for the country, to grow the econony and to create jobs despite all oppositions from Rethug like you.

Does it matter to you that President Obama did not create and cause the Housing bubble to burst? Does it matter to you that the new President (Barak Obama) came in and immediately put a stop to our slid into a depression with his "Stimulus Plan"? Does it matter to you that this new President pushed to save two of America's giant car industries? Does it matter to you that President Obama pushed for and got the Affordable Health Care Law passed?

The description of how the decision is made is exactly how a good President does it. Get opinions from people with different views and then make the tough decision. Unlike Bush, according to many sources, Obama wants a diversity of opinion. If everyone simply has the same opinion or says what they think the President wants them to say, then the President really does not need advisers.

Facts are facts Obama made the decision and carried through the mission. He could have easily said no to that mission and none of us would have never knew of it. He put his whole political career on the line. I doubt if Bush would have risked that or his cronies. Go back to the Bush years and when Collin Powell quit that was a direct message that Bush was screwed up and the GOP was being run by the rich oil men. Bushes big blow off about Weapons of mass destruction was a bold face lie. During Bush years the national debt ceiling was raised 7 times with the excuse of winning a war???. Obama was elected because people were fed up with the GOP and Bush blowing smoke up our A_ -. Bin Laden is now playing cards with Hitler,Stalin and the rest of the human waste in hell thanks to Obama and his inner circle and the military leaders he trusted. So as I watch the GOP debates and the bunch of candidates that are from Pee Wee's Play house hack each other over how the hid their$$$ millions from paying taxes and how it is ok to cheat on their wives and be kicked out of congress and not address our national problems except to blame Obama. I even had to agree with Fidel Castro that the GOP is a mess. It will be interesting to see how the GOP tries to debate Obama and not make bigger fools out of themselves. But the must have all of the answers in their book Peter in the rabbit hutch. Please do not forget Dick Channey do you want more of that? Well the GOP plans on having a colonial on the moon in 8 years I hope they do not screw that up. lol. Save the USA vote OBAMA in 2012

For eight full years, G.W. and Cheney couldn't find Bin Laden. It took less than four years for Obama to find and kill Bin Laden. What intelligence !!! Bush had or left behind for Obama to capture Bin Laden. If anything President Bush had no intelligence for Bin Ladens capture he was to Dumb !!! to have intelligence, that's why it took Obama to finish his job, Bush had no intentions to capture Bin Laden because if he really wanted him, it could have been done a long time ago, him and his family were in cahoots with the Laden Family because of their oil riches and the Bush Family is in the Oil Business. When we first invaded Afghanistan we had the chance to capture him in the mountains but he let him get away instead, also Bush took us to another war to Iraq because his intelligence claims that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction so we invaded that country as well and come to find out Iraq never had Weapons of Mass Destruction that was a bulls*** !!! War started for the Big Oil intrest because Iraq has big oil fields in that country and Bush sacrificed our Men and women soldiers to fight for what ???? We lost thousands of our American Soldiers for his Oil Crony friends intrest not because Sadaam was a threat to us it was all about the intrest of Big Oil Business and it also cost are country Economy as well. So if anything Obama deserves the credit for Bin Laddens capture and his intelligence Bush wasn't smart enough if he wanted to catch him Obama said that his Number #1 priority was to capture Obama on his top priority list during his campaign before becoming president and that he did accomplish not Bush. So how's that for a Left wing opinion I would trust Obamas intelligence than to trust Bush he was a worhtless president for this country he has created more enemies around the world towards our country and are country has lost respect because of him, now Obama has to try to regain that respect back for our country. So for all you Right Wingers !!! who don't respect us too Bad !!! if you can't accept the truth then that's your problem. Go Obama 2012 !!!

Well there you go Mike Donohue, I Knew there was a reason why Bush sent us there, it wasn't because Saddam was a threat to our country it was the intrest of Big Oil Business and he sacrificed American soldiers lives for the Big Oil Cronies it was Bush fathers agenda and he completed his fathers agenda by sending a lot of American families Sons and Daughters to complete his dad agenda. Maybe he should of sent his two daughters in the war and let him know what it feels like to loose a love one for his American interest and yes I agree he should have been impeached by the federal government it was wrong what he did and he and the Republican party don't take responsibility for their actions this War in Iraq was one of the problems why are economy was shot to the curb. To invade Afghanistan to get Bin Laden that's one thing I can agree with but to start another war for Big Oil interest totally wrong and unjust and he had put are American troops in harms way. When his time comes the good lord will put him on judgement for all the wrong that he put on the American people to fight his wars and Bailing out the Big Banks and giving out tax breaks to all the big business which is stealing to me and a good majority of Americans would probably agree because some of them are suffering already from this Destruction he has caused, and the good lord knows himself that was wrong.

Honestly, unarmed or not he was deemed #1 on the U.S' most wanted list and was labeled as "Kill or Capture". He also resisted the SEAL's demands and reached for a gun, at which point they shot him. The way he killed 3,000 civilians honestly doesnt deserve a proper burial. Hes rotting in hell either way.

You are assuming that OSama is Guilty via the media's reports. There is question of whether He took responsibility or not. Just like WMD's we assume that those calling the shots are speaking the truth. We all bought into it and we were wrong. Anger and hate directed towards people with out due process is a dangerous thing.
So when they come for you, Will all laugh and point fingers and say you deserve what you get. 9/11 was a very suffisticated attack that Questions if they even had the capability of pulling it off. Are we going to compare it to the shoe bomber or the underware bomber. They have hardly shown the abilities since then of doing anything.
And IRAN, they haven't been able to build a refinery since 1979, to convert their own oil to gas, what makes you think they can build a nuke. Iran has been a strategic objective of the us since we lost it's control with the over throw of the SHAH. Hinse the build up and financing of Saddam to go to war for us, we funded and allowed for him to build WMD then..........

I guess you were uh, unaware of those reported facts eh? His body is where it belongs (with the fish) with the rest of the Mafioso assassins and traitors, yes? Actually Jon, Osama did not bomb the wtc in 93. It was Ramzi Yousef working with his own crew as a sort of 'lone wolf' terrorist. While he is related to Khalid sheikh Mohammad, the planner of 9/11, he had no connections with Bin Laden around that time and is currently in ADMAX, America's highest security prison.

Osama Bin Laden was cornered in a cave in Tora Bora. The cave was nothing like the sophisticated bunker we were led to believe it was. He was literally writing out his will and using a satellite phone to call followers and apologize for destroying the jihadist movement. The war was won.

Then Bush began pulling out the finest military on earth to pre-stage them for Iraq. He outsourced the battle to members of the "Northern Alliance", the anti-Taliban Afghani resistance. They signed a truce with forces in Tora Bora so they could "gather their men and surrender", without consulting the US. And Bin Laden walked out and made his way to Pakistan.

We could have kept the pressure on him there, killed Bin Laden with his top leadership and captured the rest in 2002. Bin Laden's escape would never have become the recruiting coup that rebuilt al-Qaeda. Afghanistan could have been rebuilt with minimal resistance. For 1/10 the cost of fighting the insurgency Afghanistan would have been a stable democracy and America would have been there only as trainers and civilian construction contractors by 2004.

        Thanks Bush!

Yeah W "served" for six months, took the space of a real pilot and then left for his fathers campaign befor ehis training was over, what a guy! That action screwed the U.S. out of a real pilot that could have helped in the war, good job both you and he, yetches.

Bush joined! my a@%ss, Bush used his privelege to stay state side in the National Guard, and then failed to fulfil his service obligation. When you are born with a blue blood silver spoon in your mouth, that is what you can do.

      • Dude

Bush used daddy's influence to get a cushy job in the air guard. Basically, Fed Ex in uniform. In the order of possible deployment to Vietnam, Bush's unit was two steps ahead of mine and I was in the Boy Scouts. Then he refused to take a physical that involved a drug test and was grounded. Many months of his service record are blank.

Bill Clinton overcame the death of his father, before he was born, and a step father with alcohol and gambling problems to become a Rhodes Scholar. He used a college deferment to avoid being drafted and studied at the University of Oxford.

Bush got into Yale because his daddy went there and that is a near guarantee of acceptance. Despite the advantage of being a Congressman's son (no one will give an F to a Congressman's son) he barely held a C average. With a business degree from Harvard, Bush lost money in the oil industry.

What I am saying is, "yes Bush is a veteran and Clinton is not."

The good news is we know W can read since he was reading "My Pet Goat" at the time of the first attacks. When the second attack happened he flew/ran to the deepest hole in Nebraska, what courage. Kinda makes you proud of a heroic president like that doesn’t it? What a great example, what a leader, what panache! The good news is that we have others in his same party lining up to do what W did; sadly they will not make it as president, boo hoo...

Considering how Presidents get pilloried for anything that is based on faulty intelligence, I'm not surprised this was not an easy decision. If, despite all of Saddam's years of intransigence and evidence suggesting he was hiding something, the opposition can claim that it wasn't an Intelligence Failure but a deliberate con - as in, Bush somehow KNEW that Saddam was bluffing - how would it be spun if Obama had said "Go" for a Raid that turned out to be a hit on a house of innocents?

He absolutely deserves credit for it. He hung his neck out to get him. America won that day regardless of who the President was. You all need to learn some respect for the Office of the United States President even if you didn't vote for the person in it. I know I didn't, but I am mature enough to know that he made the right call that day. I don't like some of his policies, but that is part of our system.

Look Gang, we can all second guess the decisions and policies just like we all could have coached a better sporting event. Obama got him, Bush got him, who gives a damn who the President was, because it was America that won that day. I'm a Republican and more than likely will not vote for Obama. However, the campaign is long so we will see. The internet tough guy mob is right...Obama can't bank his campaign on this. Bush put a lot of the infrastructure in place that was used in this mission and given the chance he would have done the same. That said, the victory in taking out Osama is huge, but it will be the decisions that Obama has made outside of that and will continue to make in the next few months that will define his Administration. I'm not wild about the healthcare kill and I think the trade agreement with Korea is rubbish, but they are steps in the right direction.

I think that too many people who hear negativity about Osama assume that the comment maker is racist and that is silly. I'm frustrated with him and his policies. I'm frustrated that he is not doing anything to stop the polarized stances that the two parties are taking in the country now. More and more people are becoming radical Republicans and Democrats daily and the media is fueling it. As a result, we spend a lot of time online or face to face firing off witty political blurbs at each other and accomplish nothing. I'm so tired of the media and our political parties ramping things up to be out of control. We are the most powerful country in the world and if we don't slow down and start to figure some things out together we won't be. That said, it doesn't matter who the President was that day or what party he was affiliated with........that day America won. That day...the world won. Obama just so happened to be the one to give the word. Congrats to him he made a good decision and will go down in history for it. He deserves it.

History is full of people that made tough calls. Obama is America's President, so regardless of his political beliefs you all need to wise up and watch your words. Stop demonizing the man like they did George Bush. You don't like him? That's fine. Don't vote for him in November, but you all need to drastically change the tone by which you talk about him. Apparently, a lot of my fellow Republicans have lost the concept of respective. In 2008, the Democrats did the same thing and returning the favor accomplishes nothing.

Enjoy the win America....we got him.

Fact is Bush screwed up everything for a massive short-term profit for his friends and ripped off Americans at the same time. JOHNNY- As one who voted for our President, allow me to enlighten you with some critical candor what he HAS done that's upset me:
        – Signed the Congress' renewed Patriot Act, putting all our Rights of Privacy at risk (really pizzed me off!)
        – Has balked & failed to push harder for the DREAM Act
        – Delayed his authorization of Attorney General to pursue justice for the 2008 Crash until just now
        – Caved on the Tax custs for the Top 1% last Fall (but he'd just lost the Midterm elections, so...)
        – DIdn't address the toxic loans still surrounding the Housing crisis
        – Still no Immigration Reform Bill brought to Congress (even though it's COngress who should write it)
        – Extra long "learning curve" toward the art of Negotiating. Very, very frustrating

Probably a couple others that escape me, but my point is there are plenty of things that anger me about Obama's policies. However, a reasonable person needs to weigh all that his Administration DID get accomplished in three short years! And it is because of the balance we all need to consider, I elect to give this man another 4 years... primarily because our previous President screwed things up during his entire EIGHT years.

It's likely you won't accept the above rationale, and that's OK, dude. I was merely trying to point out that there are Millions like me who (likely) view it the same way. Hope you have a healthy & happy 2012.

I don't think Obama has been given enough credit for his accomplishments and the areas that he has fallen short have been typically due to partisan politics with the sole goal of trying to make him fail (so that he can be ousted in 2012). He really stuck his neck out on the Osama Bin Laden decision and, more recently on the Somalia rescue. If those had failed like the Iran hostage rescue mission, he really would be in a world of hurt. Our economy is slowly on the mend....Japan's banking crisis took 10 YEARS to clean up (and they weren't entrenched in 2 wars). Give the guy a break.

Umm. It seems we are forgetting a simple little fact which lays this outrageous conspiracy theory to rest: Al Qaeda acknowledged the success of the SEAL strike which killed Osama bin Ladin and has vowed revenge.

Sorry no, Obama was not the only one to get Osama and IF he is basing his foreign policy on just that, good grief. Killing Osama means nothing at all in the long run to help this country. If he wants to run his campaign on killing Bin Laden have fun, it is a horrible topic to keep using as a basis to win.

sharky, would saving the US auto industry, the healthcare reform, saving our economy from a disaster be better topics for you? I bet you are a republican who is frustrated that your candidates can't hold a candle to Obama. FYI, the killing of Osama is an important step in our fight against those that killed thousands of civilians on 9/11. Osama was the head, and after years of hiding, our brilliant, decisive command in chief got him. You just can't stand that fact even though you and your family are better of without evil Osama.

I would say that @Damo and @comm0nsens have it right. People envy other people when they do something someone else didn't or coulltn't.. Let's not forget about why we lost over 4700 lives fighting a WAR in IRAQ that was predicated upon false information and the mere fact that Saddam tried to Kill G HW Bush.. W daddy which was the only reason why we attached IRAQ in the first place.. Still to this day nobody is asking where are all the WMD's Saddam had... Cause he didn't have any. GWB should be brought up on war crimes.. ... and yes I am no an independent voter and will be voter for OBAMA 2012.

Obama was able to "pull the trigger" because Bush had put into place.....drones, S.F.ect....Obama made a gusty call and it paid off....he should have thanked Bush as well. He did not save the auto industry or healthcare.....both should not have been done. Goverments job is NOT to save businesses that make poor business dealings...or to get involved in the private sector with healthcare (which will be struck down). Obama has done nothing to help with the job problem (cash for clunkers???really?) ANYONE BUT OBAMA IN 2012!!!!!

      • thatrix

        Sorry Duane you're way off.
The terrorist attacks took place under Bush's watch. He was warned several times by Clinton that Al Qaeda should be his number one priority. Bush put Al Qaeda on the back burner and only implemented security measures after we were attacked. As far as putting assets in place such as Special Forces.. they were around for a long time before Bush.
So please go and do some research before posting such ignorance.

Duane – St. Pete FLA Obama has done nothing to help with the job problem. He did not save the auto industry or healthcare.....both should not have been done.

The fact that he did save the auto industry saved jobs. If he did not safe the auto industry there would be millions more without jobs.

@Duane....get a grip. We know where you're coming from....don't expect much from you in terms of logic. Bush didn't know sh#t about what he was getting exit policy, sectarian violence amongst Kurds, Sunnis and Shites...he had no idea who these people were in the first place...."we're just gonna ride in take out Sadam and the Iraqi's will greet us with open arms"...stupid simpleton!!! After a few years he plain gave up on getting Bin Laden. But we know your kind will not give credit to straight up intelligence. You are not equipped.
Never see the day when people like you would be dissatisfied with success...GM is number one in the WORLD terms of car manefacturing/sales in the WORLD now thanks to BO! You are just mad because you can't give his kind any credit. I know honey...just take some alkaselzer....or prune juice and let it go.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here... I'm guessing you're upset that a Democrat made the correct decision on a very tough call that could have easily destroyed his presidency had things gone wrong, resulting in the death of the man responsible for the single greatest loss of American lives in a terrorist attack in history – a man whose ability to elude justice had been a black cloud hanging over America for years.

      Is that about right?

Bush allowed Osama to escape in the first place.
Instead of sending assets to block his escape into pakistan, he sent CIA operatives with bags of money to pay the locals to fight for us.
On the way into the battle, the locals referred to Osama as a "god". When our SF combat teams leading the locals had Osama cornered, the locals turned their weapons on our SF operators and allowed Osama to escape. That is a fact.

Obama's decision to move the focus from Iraq to Afghanistan was the major contributing factor to the capture of Osama Bin Laden.

Also, Obama was fighting a loosing battle before he came into office. You have to at least acknowledge that Obama inherited a sinking economy in 2008.

Clearly President Obama isn't basing his foreign policy just on getting Osama bin Laden. The president's foreign policy is comprehensive and complex; however, getting Osama bin Laden is the little piece of it that the average voter can easily understand.
