Marine to serve no time for Iraq killings

A military judge has sentenced Marine Staff Sgt. Frank G. Wuterich, who pleaded guilty to negligent dereliction of duty in connection with the shooting deaths of 24 Iraqis, to a maximum 90 days' in prison and a reduction in pay. However, he will not be serving any time in custody as a result of a plea agreement reached between prosecutors and defense attorneys on Monday.

As Mark Thompson noted on Time's Battleland blog, the Haditha case started with a bang and ended with a whimper.

"The seven other Marines charged in the case have all been acquitted or had the charges against them dismissed. Critics will argue that military justice is an oxymoron, like military music. But Marines hailed the decision as the proper end to a painful case," Thompson wrote.

Good day, Steven, in response to yur post above; I would have to agree with your comment/opinion, "Yea ,.. And the only good American is an Obamahtron ..And shit like this ,,is why we are the most hated country in the world ." It's obvious that this is a one-sided situation, that many Americans don't wish to take into account the other side's position. Individuals such as M4 Skull F_cker are unwittingly the precipitators of quite a bit of animosity towards the United States and it's citizens here and abroad.
And will undoubtedly lead to more violence.

The government has ZERO legal right to conceal info from the tax payers, manning is a hero. You are a pawn of the MIC it is so sad that americans buy the government line on this crap.

Our issue in the military is generally not with concealing info from American tax-payers...ALL military service men and women were civilians at one point or another and their tendency not to divulge information didn't change when they put on the uniform...this is about the insanity of divulging information to people that could use the intelligence to put our servicemen and women in harms way and KILL THEM. Sorry if you're not able to see the information and you feel "offended" and gives the impression that you can't be trusted, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. If you put your "right" not to be "offended" in front of my "right" to live as a US Military servicemember you're got some serious misplaced priorities...makes people like who serve really want to ask if we can just protect the one's that have my back and leave people like you to fend for yourself.

Can't understand it. Like we can do no wrong in a war. In 1967 US Army platoon gunned 500 unarmed Vietnamese, children and babies included, in a ditch in My Lai. The Army charged about 30 soldiers involved. Only William Calley was convicted and sentenced to life, but was reduced By Nixon to 3-year house arrest. I heard that some 30 years after My Lai William Calley was honored for his excellent military service. Today you talk to people about My Lai, you'd be accused of being a liberal fabricating untrue stories.

ok..so where would My Lai be without the involvement of the US military? where would South Korea be without the involvement of the US military? Where would name the 100 other countries and where would they be or what would be the European union of Germany be without the US military? Before you speak up make sure you understand you'd all be german with blonde hair and blue eyes if it wasn't for this country you HATE so much... Just answer that and you'll have the answer to all your other questions too. Sure there were some civilian casualties how many innocent people died during WWI and WWII and The Korean War and everyone between?

Somehow we manage to send troops by the hundreds of thousands into Iraq and Afghanistan without too many accusations of this type. They serve and they come home and we all get on in life – the few and the proud – and rightly so.

But here we are – too many civilians dead in one go to ignore – and they had too many witnesses – couldn't shoot them all – so someone gets charged – he pleads guilty and gets a cut in pay. Probably not gonna advance very far after this but at least they didn't turf him outright. He can still smile and call himself a Marine.

According to the testimony the incident took place over 45 minutes and involved 3 houses – they had some time to think. Just the cost of doing business I guess some would say.

I cant figure out if you are a cynic, or just think that civilian lives are a fair trade in the cost of doing business.

I am resigned to the obvious – we need to swallow a certain amount of our honor regarding the actions of a small number of people every time there is a war. Putting on a uniform doesn't make you more or less human that you were to begin with.

Most serve with honor and we painfully grudge and procrastinate our way to the pulpit of moral choice every time we have an "incident".

We hope for better and coast along as if all is well "over there" but as the testimony and investigation showed – the marines knew they had a problem. Even one of their own, Sergeant De la Cruz testified that he saw the accused shoot five Iraqis who were attempting to surrender.

A Marine accusing a Marine – now what do we do?

Thats an easy one – tested and proven to work every time. We get him to plead guilty, get it over with quickly and hopefully it will all be forgotten as the next Hollywood or sports scandal story captivates our attention.

Does anybody know the difference between the wars we have won and the ones we have lost/losing? News media and the internet is the correct answer. Wars are savage and good kids (I am 51 and did my time) are brought down to their most intense instincts. I am not glad for this US Marine because of what he has gone through after the action/actions he has been in and how he is being displayed now. I am happy though for having VOLUNTEER Marines, Sailers, Airman, and Soldiers to fight.

NO ONE is above the law ever. not the police, not politicians, not military, not civilians. NO ONE. everyone should be prosecuted fairly and justly regardless of profession or income. oh if only we lived in such a fair world...

Lots of CNN discussion courage you show, Chairborne Ranger! The stress of combat and loss of comrades is a really pathetic excuse for war crimes. Hundreds of thousands of Americans saw combat in A-stan and Iraq, and saw thousands of US troops die, and 99.999% of them did not feel the need to cope with stress by murdering women and children... some felt it necessary to PROTECT Iraqi women and children from terrorists. What was it that gave these thugs a pass? A flag on their shoulder? A uniform? The fact that their victims had strange names and lived in a strange place with strange customs, so they don't count? I know you won't be convinced otherwise, Miss Tiger, but someone has to stand up to people like you.

For once the armchair Generals are right. Make a mistake on one or two and you have an excuse. Drop a JDAM on a building and take out a couple dozen in one go, understandable. But kill 24 in an action that spanned over some time and someone had time to think. This is hard to see as anything other than deliberate after the first few.

It's also real easy to cover up mistakes by saying 'hey you weren't there man, you don't know'. I don't know the specifics of this case and can't judge either way. However just because someone hasn't served does not mean they can't say they disagree with something the military has done. That's what this country is about, that's what our military is supposed to be defending. Get used to whiners man, this is america, ppl can say what they want.

when you sign up to take money for killing, you are an assassin not a soulder. Our military along with every single contract killer from Blackwater and the like, they are all assassins and anyone who "suports" them is suporting murders and thieves. Remember the UN said no to this war. Every soulder who has fired a weapon in Iraq are warcriminals and should be hanged.

The 24 Iraqis killed were women and children. They were shot while huddles, cowering in fear inside their domiciles. Jesus H. Christ! There is no excusing that. I repeat; there is no excusing that. Don't give me this baloney about first having to serve in combat. The overwhelming majority of servicemen who participate in combat and experience having their brothers in arms killed or maimed do not kill women and children as these fellas did. Excusing this behavior is disgraceful and unbecoming our great military and dishonors those service men who do not kill women and children.

if they were true soldiers, they would have kept the calmest they could. not start spraying anything and anyone just as they came under fire.

and for those who say military should support its hell-stricken personnel:
      # 1: they all (at least nowadays) SIGN UP, VOLUNTEER
      # 2: they are at least promised and quite often given worthy benefits from the rest of us working people's tax money, so like or not, we all support our troops, without us, there would not have been a thing called military budget
      # 3: That argument is AS STUPID as those who say COPS SHOULD COVER FOR COP CRIMES.... and that my friend, in and of itself is a crime if caught and exposed by caring citizens or officers or officials.
      # 4: Thus, u have no ground, u stand upon just empty and high emotions. u r easily flushed and defused. i just did it.

I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.

“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?

“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.

“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”
