Marine to serve no time for Iraq killings
A military judge has sentenced Marine Staff Sgt. Frank G. Wuterich, who pleaded guilty to negligent dereliction of duty in connection with the shooting deaths of 24 Iraqis, to a maximum 90 days' in prison and a reduction in pay. However, he will not be serving any time in custody as a result of a plea agreement reached between prosecutors and defense attorneys on Monday.
As Mark Thompson noted on Time's Battleland blog, the Haditha case started with a bang and ended with a whimper.
"The seven other Marines charged in the case have all been acquitted or had the charges against them dismissed. Critics will argue that military justice is an oxymoron, like military music. But Marines hailed the decision as the proper end to a painful case," Thompson wrote.

Our issue in the military is generally not with concealing info from American tax-payers...ALL military service men and women were civilians at one point or another and their tendency not to divulge information didn't change when they put on the uniform...this is about the insanity of divulging information to people that could use the intelligence to put our servicemen and women in harms way and KILL THEM. The Army charged about 30 soldiers involved. Only William Calley was convicted and sentenced to life, but was reduced By Nixon to 3-year house arrest. I heard that some 30 years after My Lai William Calley was honored for his excellent military service. Today you talk to people about My Lai, you'd be accused of being a liberal fabricating untrue stories.

Somehow we manage to send troops by the hundreds of thousands into Iraq and Afghanistan without too many accusations of this type. They serve and they come home and we all get on in life – the few and the proud – and rightly so.
But here we are – too many civilians dead in one go to ignore – and they had too many witnesses – couldn't shoot them all – so someone gets charged – he pleads guilty and gets a cut in pay. Probably not gonna advance very far after this but at least they didn't turf him outright. He can still smile and call himself a Marine.
According to the testimony the incident took place over 45 minutes and involved 3 houses – they had some time to think. Just the cost of doing business I guess some would say.
I cant figure out if you are a cynic, or just think that civilian lives are a fair trade in the cost of doing business.
I am resigned to the obvious – we need to swallow a certain amount of our honor regarding the actions of a small number of people every time there is a war. Putting on a uniform doesn't make you more or less human that you were to begin with.
Most serve with honor and we painfully grudge and procrastinate our way to the pulpit of moral choice every time we have an "incident".
We hope for better and coast along as if all is well "over there" but as the testimony and investigation showed – the marines knew they had a problem. Even one of their own, Sergeant De la Cruz testified that he saw the accused shoot five Iraqis who were attempting to surrender.

Thats an easy one – tested and proven to work every time. We get him to plead guilty, get it over with quickly and hopefully it will all be forgotten as the next Hollywood or sports scandal story captivates our attention.

I am happy though for having VOLUNTEER Marines, Sailers, Airman, and Soldiers to fight.

I've done two tours, including one before and through the "surge" when things were as bad as they ever were, and I still find what these guys did to be abhorrent. They were wrong, they knew they were wrong, their superiors knew they were wrong. Simple as that.

When enemy soldiers, whether the Vietcong in my war or Iraqi/Taliban insurgents in the current wars, dress in civilian clothing and are sheltered by the locals, you are going to have rightfully nervous fingers on the trigger and "innocents" are going to get killed or wounded. The 24 Iraqis killed were women and children. They were shot while huddles, cowering in fear inside their domiciles. Jesus H. Christ! There is no excusing that. I repeat; there is no excusing that. Don't give me this baloney about first having to serve in combat. The overwhelming majority of servicemen who participate in combat and experience having their brothers in arms killed or maimed do not kill women and children as these fellas did. Excusing this behavior is disgraceful and unbecoming our great military and dishonors those service men who do not kill women and children.

The military's handling of the Haditha Marine murders are a truly obscene miscarriage of justice and law. It's obvious the Pentagon only pays lip service to its many condemnations of atrocities and war crimes committed by our ill-trained and poorly educated troops.

The Marines started under fire. I don't think the public should cast an opinion without first serving in combat and having all of the facts. The Iraqi insurgents blend in with civilians and create a very stressful situation where you don't know who your enemy is.
I don't need to serve in combat to know outright murder when I see it. They killed men, women, and even children.
Those who founded this country also killed women and children. Women and children die in EVERY war. Please, stop stating the obvious. If you're so against it, do something about it. These Marines should able to handle all war's stressful situations thats why they are Marines not people like us are Marines.If they are not able to handle these things they what is the point to have them in Marines.. these peoples are murders.. Even a kid can shoot unarmed people like these coward did and for that he will not need any training. If they are so scared about their life then why don't they just do some other less risky job...
