Drone kills Al Qaeda operative

A senior al Qaeda operations planner was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan last week, according to a U.S. official.
Aslam Awan died January 10 when a CIA-operated missile slammed into a compound near the town of Miranshah in the province of North Waziristan.
The official described Awan as a key player with al Qaeda who was not known by the public but was being tracked by the intelligence community. The official said Awan was working on attacks against the West.
"His death reduces al Qaeda's thinning bench of another operative devoted to plotting the death of innocent civilians," said the American official.
The missile strike was one of two launched last week, marking the end of a seven-week pause in U.S. drone attacks after an incident in November when NATO forces in Afghanistan accidentally fired upon and killed 24 Pakistani troops operating in the border region.
Although U.S. officials deny there was an official lull in drone operations, the relationship with Pakistan has been on a down-spin over the past year after a number of high profile incidents, including the secret raid by U.S. forces on the compound that housed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Milegi – no doubt healthcare needs to be looked at. I don't think pro-lifers are anti-healthcare at all. I think the big issue is government run healthcare. But I've not experienced both, so I'm open to considering government run health care may be the best thing since sliced bread. When the Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and established our system of checks and balances and a two party system, I believe where they went wrong was allowing for a two party system where the general election is to be decided every four years. In other words, i believe if both the Republican and Democratic Parties were allowed to govern for eight years and alternate and relinquish office to the other Party after their eight year term is up, perhaps our country would have a more clearer path as to where we want to go as a nation. And perhaps we would have been more united and focused on the issues at hand and on the well being of the American people as opposed to the gridlock we're seeing today. And I believe it is this urge for one Party to unseed the other for partisan ideologies and special interests that's weakening our democracy as a whole and undermining all we stand for. And too often we forget that our most important asset is the American people and if anyone has forgotten, well I believe our strength is in numbers. No, I'm not really saying that we should amend the constitution but what I'm saying is there comes a time when we need to stop all the bull sh*it and come together a a nation for our own sake.

I totally disagree with you! First of all our disagreement as Americans arises when people like you label our Presidents liberal and conservatives. When then Senator Obama gave the keynote address at the 2004 National convention, he stated that there's no blue America or red America but a United States of America. And when GWB invaded Afghanistan, there wasn't one person in America who was against him or disagreed with our invasion of Afghanistan to go after al Qaeda. Back then I didn't look at GWB as a Republican or conservative President but as an American President who I respected and was proud to call my President but all that changed when he abandoned the Afghan war to start the illegitimate Iraqi war.
But even before candidate Obama was elected, your conservative Republican/Tea Party base started all the bull sh*it at Sen. McCain's rallies by saying openly that a black man should not be president of the United States then all the outrageous and disrespectful name calling such as socialist, and communist and muslim and half breed and so on started by you people. And though President Obama has handled the situation with dignity, class and professionalism and has tried very hard for three years to find common ground to unite us as a nation, the GOP and the Tea Party were doing everything within their means to return America back to Jim Crow with all their bigotry, racism and hate.
Now I'm hearing from people like you that President Obama is a liberal President? How about we all start over by referring to all our Presidents past and present as President(s) of the United States of America while dropping the liberal and conservatives for a change? The GOP did not leave anything unfinished. The American public has zero staying power when anything gets hard and they voted the GOP out of office. I guarantee you that McCain would have finished this if he had been allowed. That being said and even though I would never have voted for Obama, I fully support Obama's use of drones and am glad that he has decided not to shut down Guantanamo Bay as of yet. Once you get up there with the big boys, eyes are opened and reality has to be dealt with, even if it is unpopular. It's very, very, easy to be critical of everything done when you don't have to make the decisions yourself. So, simmer down and try to support your country.

I can't speak for others, however I would consider myself a middle grounder on many politics due to my shared beliefs with both sides. Currently I would say I have leaned more left in last few years, but I have always supported the eradication of people like the person targeted in this attack.
So don't jump to conclusions that democrats are blindly supporting everything Obama does, rather you may seeing different tier of voter as a democrat president performs actions that may be seen as more Republican. The problem with the Afghan war is we cannot clearly identify who the real enemy is because the rebels don't wear military uniform and therefore they they have the advantage of blending in with the civilian population. Let's face it, the enemy could be a hundred thousand strong or they could be a million strong. And the more of them we kill, the more they recruit. So how do we gauge success? Its simple! Bring our troops home because there would be less Afghan and American casualties if we end this conflict and less billions wasted on a war that should have ended several years ago. That is success!
