Drone kills Al Qaeda operative

By CNN Senior National Security Producer Pam Benson

A senior al Qaeda operations planner was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan last week, according to a U.S. official.

Aslam Awan died January 10 when a CIA-operated missile slammed into a compound near the town of Miranshah in the province of North Waziristan.

The official described Awan as a key player with al Qaeda who was not known by the public but was being tracked by the intelligence community. The official said Awan was working on attacks against the West.

"His death reduces al Qaeda's thinning bench of another operative devoted to plotting the death of innocent civilians," said the American official.

The missile strike was one of two launched last week, marking the end of a seven-week pause in U.S. drone attacks after an incident in November when NATO forces in Afghanistan accidentally fired upon and killed 24 Pakistani troops operating in the border region.

Although U.S. officials deny there was an official lull in drone operations, the relationship with Pakistan has been on a down-spin over the past year after a number of high profile incidents, including the secret raid by U.S. forces on the compound that housed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The cowards of fbi/cia direct our brave Young into useless battles & unjust wars.

The cia directs our young, brave men and women into useless battles and unjust wars, while the fbi threatens, arrests, imprisons, tortures and kills the soldier/citizen (whether decorated or fatigued) upon return home. Thus, no wonder *West Point and other military academies frequent my reports in search of an answer to this question, "Who will follow us into the next battle"?

Milegi – no doubt healthcare needs to be looked at. I don't think pro-lifers are anti-healthcare at all. I think the big issue is government run healthcare. But I've not experienced both, so I'm open to considering government run health care may be the best thing since sliced bread. Why don't you go live in Canada for a few years, with some health issues, and then come report back on here what you think of the program. I'll stay tuned.

When the Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and established our system of checks and balances and a two party system, I believe where they went wrong was allowing for a two party system where the general election is to be decided every four years. In other words, i believe if both the Republican and Democratic Parties were allowed to govern for eight years and alternate and relinquish office to the other Party after their eight year term is up, perhaps our country would have a more clearer path as to where we want to go as a nation. And perhaps we would have been more united and focused on the issues at hand and on the well being of the American people as opposed to the gridlock we're seeing today. And I believe it is this urge for one Party to unseed the other for partisan ideologies and special interests that's weakening our democracy as a whole and undermining all we stand for. And too often we forget that our most important asset is the American people and if anyone has forgotten, well I believe our strength is in numbers. No, I'm not really saying that we should amend the constitution but what I'm saying is there comes a time when we need to stop all the bull sh*it and come together a a nation for our own sake.

How much more isolated do you think the terrorists in this country can get? They tend goats in the mountains of Pakistan. You serious? You would only destabilize the sudo government that currently secures the nukes. Sounds brilliant. If the government falls apart then the nukes might just up and walk out the door. There would be no tracking them nukes if that happened.

I totally disagree with you! First of all our disagreement as Americans arises when people like you label our Presidents liberal and conservatives. When then Senator Obama gave the keynote address at the 2004 National convention, he stated that there's no blue America or red America but a United States of America. And when GWB invaded Afghanistan, there wasn't one person in America who was against him or disagreed with our invasion of Afghanistan to go after al Qaeda. Back then I didn't look at GWB as a Republican or conservative President but as an American President who I respected and was proud to call my President but all that changed when he abandoned the Afghan war to start the illegitimate Iraqi war.

But even before candidate Obama was elected, your conservative Republican/Tea Party base started all the bull sh*it at Sen. McCain's rallies by saying openly that a black man should not be president of the United States then all the outrageous and disrespectful name calling such as socialist, and communist and muslim and half breed and so on started by you people. And though President Obama has handled the situation with dignity, class and professionalism and has tried very hard for three years to find common ground to unite us as a nation, the GOP and the Tea Party were doing everything within their means to return America back to Jim Crow with all their bigotry, racism and hate.

Now I'm hearing from people like you that President Obama is a liberal President? How about we all start over by referring to all our Presidents past and present as President(s) of the United States of America while dropping the liberal and conservatives for a change? Why can't we all unite as Americans the way our Founding Fathers envisioned our great democracy to be? Can't we do that for a start or for a change? And if we're indeed one nation under God with a common purpose to live the American dream, then shouldn't we start behaving as though we're indeed one nation under god without the bigotry and hate? And ain't our diversity what makes us a unique and special nation?

Today six more marines killed in Afghanistan in a war the GOP abandoned and prolonged to start their illegitimate Iraqi war and Dick Cheyney still says he has no regrets. Your take on GWB, Dick Cheyney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condaleeza Rice and the GOP who are responsible for these atrocities? Let's face it, President Obama is simply left with the task of finishing the mess the GOP left unfinished. But your take on the rightwing leadership?

    January 20, 2012 at 10:56 am | Reply
    • Ms. Smith

The GOP did not leave anything unfinished. The American public has zero staying power when anything gets hard and they voted the GOP out of office. I guarantee you that McCain would have finished this if he had been allowed. That being said and even though I would never have voted for Obama, I fully support Obama's use of drones and am glad that he has decided not to shut down Guantanamo Bay as of yet. Once you get up there with the big boys, eyes are opened and reality has to be dealt with, even if it is unpopular. It's very, very, easy to be critical of everything done when you don't have to make the decisions yourself. So, simmer down and try to support your country.

I read posts and opinions daily that sanctify Democrats and persecute the Republican party. None of it makes any sense at all simply because the people who rail on the GOP and consider them to be the sole source of governmental gluttony fail to consider that the Dems have had plenty of control for a fair amount of time, yet, nothing truly changes. The finger pointing and surrealistic perspectives only continue because of the sheltered lives our citizens have led for the past 200 years. So, each morning, when you order that latte then sip it down, knowing that you're likely to live another day, perhaps, one day, you'll stop to think about how it is that you've come to sip that latte in relative safety. And as you continue to blame the GOP for every ill this nation has developed, maybe you'll realize that those ills have been derived by voters who have been asleep at the wheel for a very long time. It's not the GOP who is at fault. It sports some excellent minds as well as people who have our best interests at heart. So do the Dems. Maybe the next time you vote for someone because they look a certain way, have a nice sounding name, or simply because they"re a Democrat or a "greenie"...maybe you'll think twice. Now THAT would be far more refreshing than all of that stale, GOP-busting rhetoric now wouldn't it? And by the way, what have you done to improve life around you today? Hint: watching Star Trek doesn't count.

the thing about liberals is this... when they have 'their' President in office and he's bombing other countries... they are all for it. They talk about how good of a job he's doing killing all the bad guys and so forth... but if this was a republican you'd see protesters out on the streets 'crying' and chanting bush is a terrorist or something... its hilarious. Liberals have no soul or integrity. One day its this, the next its that... When bush was in office, I saw protesters daily... as soon as obama took office they were gone like the war ended... this is why you can't take anything a liberal says, seriously. If you're still a liberal in this country take a look in the mirror and shake your head.

I can't speak for others, however I would consider myself a middle grounder on many politics due to my shared beliefs with both sides. Currently I would say I have leaned more left in last few years, but I have always supported the eradication of people like the person targeted in this attack.

So don't jump to conclusions that democrats are blindly supporting everything Obama does, rather you may seeing different tier of voter as a democrat president performs actions that may be seen as more Republican. This niche of voters may be the ones you are hearing from. Not everybody is has to be the comic book good vs evil, some of us do lean more towards the center.

Jerry I couldn't agree with you more!!! I have a conservative leaning on fiscal policy, but tend to be more moderate elsewhere. I still think those people that denigrated (Or still do.) former President Bush were/are idiots, just as I think the same about people that are doing it to President Obama. I don't have to agree with everything he does or says, but as a citizen of this country, he is MY President and deserves my respect.

I have always wondered why liberals are so pro-abortion but anti-death penalty. They are ok with giving fetuses a death penalty even though they've never had a chance to hurt anyone, but a mass murderer or some other horrific criminal deserves to live no matter what they have done? The hypocrisy is confusing to me.

If Bush had invaded the right country he might have got some credit for the "war on terror". If you are going to act like the world is against Republicans because they go to war but liberals get a free pass on the same actions. You might look at the motives of each party. Bush/Cheney went for the oil. Obama went for Osama. We killed Osama bin Laden. Where are those WMD's? You find those yet. Keep looking. Maybe they are in Iran. Or maybe thats just the next oil country on the Republicans list.

Who is truely to say these people were criminals? The American government whom continuesly and constantly is feeding lies and falsehood to it's media-driven people?

There is no justifying murder. American people need to open their eyes to beyond the media and seek truth for themselves as everything you read on the news is meant to manipulate you as a human being.

How do you gain support for a sensless killing?? TELL THEM THE VICTIM WAS JUST ANOTHER AL-QAEDA TERRORIST (LOL)

With Obama in office "Obama is a bad @ss!". With Bush in the White House, "Bush is waging an illegal war killing innocent people. He must be impeached!"

I applaud this missle strike, not because I think Obama is great, but because it was the right thing to do. You might try thinking that way sometime instead of being blindly partisan and liberal.

"You pretty much remove any legitimacy from your argument when you call Obama a left-wing socialist. He does indeed lean to the left, but he is very centrist. In addition, he is definitely not a socialist. "

LOL – Thanks for the laugh. Compared to any previous U.S. President, with the possible exception of FDR, Obama is definitely a socialist. Obama is probably the least centrist President we've had since FDR.

Not to worry, we all know that "leftist marxist" is really code for "Upitty Ni@@er". You people should just get an "I'm a bigot" tatoo on your foreheads to make you easier to spoke. That way normal people can just walk away before you have the chance to speak/whine.

I hate to inform you that all red blooded Americans are not right wing nuts, but that does not make them anti-American as you would like for everyone to believe. What have you & your right wing nuts done for America lately other than point your fingers.

    Another one bites the dust..

When Obama is in control he gets things done..
When the Republicans and the Tea Party are running things...we get gridlock, down graded, and nothing but useless bills out of Congress....and they stopped the STOCK bill so they can still get rich off of trading insider information...

You do realize the downgrade was because of the debt accrued under 4 years of a Democrat-controlled Congress with the worst 2 of that being the first 2 years of the Obama administration with a filibuster-proof Democratic majority in Congress, right? The U.S. debt was downgraded because the Democrats in Congress and President Obama didn't allow *enough* to be cut from the deficit as part of the agreement to raise the debt ceiling. You actually had idiots like Harry Reid calling a $38 B cut "draconian" when the deficit was $1,650 B/yr and federal spending was well over $3,000 B/yr. They were actually fighting to increase it with no deficit reduction at all, thereby showing that they continue to be completely opposed to fiscal responsibility. That's why the U.S. debt was downgraded. Incidentally, this is the same reason the debts have been downgraded in all of the leftist nations in Europe, with Italy, Spain, Iceland, and Greece at or approaching junk bond status.

Newt Gingrich is crying foul play and accusing the media of drone striking him on his previous marriage. Just imagine you want to be POTUS but you are afraid to answer personal questions. First Michele Bachmann weeped like John Boehner because someone on FOX asked her a flaky question now its Newt's turn. I have a question for Newt...Remember when candidate Obama ran for office? Remember all the personal, disrespectful, outrageous and shameful questions the mainstream media and your Party posed at him? Well, did he ever complain? Perhaps its because of President Obama's profesionalism, classyness, objectivity and integrity whey he's President and perhaps why none of you Repugs will ever be POTUS.

What the G-man was mad about is the curious timing of interviewing the second wife ONLY. Don't you find that rather curious? Only the second wife why not the first or the current? Maybe because the second was the one with the most venom for Newt. You would be up in arms if they did that to Obama but to you it's only fair? We'll see if you are singing that tune in a few months.

That is all you rightwing nut jobs have to offer? The reality is you people are afraid of the truth and whenever facts are presented, you people resort to name calling because you just can't have a sensible adult debate on the issues. For three years you rightwing lunatics have attacked and criticized the Obama administration for everything it has attempted to do to clean up the mess it inherited, yet you can't seem to have a sensible debate about the problems facing our country from an objective standpoint. Let's face it, racism, bigotry, domestic terrorism and outrageous name calling are not solutions to solving the problems we face as a nation. And if that's all you have to offer, then you need to get out of your trailor and off foodstamps and get a real job like most Americans do.

    • Reality Check

You present yet the typical response that all left-wing liberals throw up when you run out of sensible arguments to a discussion – on the one hand attacking all right-wings by referring them as "nut jobs" while at the same time sanctimoniously criticizing them for name calling! What's up with that! As for the mess Obama inherited? Well don't forget that it's Congress, and I might add, a Democratic Congress, who put us where we are...That's who is to blame! As soon as those ignorant voters figure out how our own government really functions (three branches...the President is only one!), then a really meaningful discussion can be had. As for jobs...my wife and I would love to have our jobs back, but since Obama effectively killed NASA off, sued Boeing for wanting to build and use a new plant outside of Washington, eliminated all but a few DOD contracts, and most recently rejected the Sands Pipeline project, the only jobs available are ditch digging and serving coffee at Starbucks! The anti-job atmosphere has created so much uncertainty that the Stock Market, which represents how our businesses are doing, is so topsy-turvy that sound investors have curtailed most speculative investments. Wow...that's change! It just isn't change that helps this country!

The problem with the Afghan war is we cannot clearly identify who the real enemy is because the rebels don't wear military uniform and therefore they they have the advantage of blending in with the civilian population. Let's face it, the enemy could be a hundred thousand strong or they could be a million strong. And the more of them we kill, the more they recruit. So how do we gauge success? Its simple! Bring our troops home because there would be less Afghan and American casualties if we end this conflict and less billions wasted on a war that should have ended several years ago. That is success!

So what's the GOP's alternative to President Obama's stimulus plan? Well, believe it or not, their alternative is actually a stimulus bill of their own that they say would have cost $713 billion with approximately $430 billion in tax cuts. Well, with all the upheaval over this administration's stimulus bill, you would have thought perhaps a GOP plan would have cost $0.00 dollars. (To see the GOP's stimulus plan, google Senate offers Alternative Stimulus Plan – Political Hotsheet – CBS News or Sen. Rand Paul's alternative jobs plan).

Sen. Rand Paul said the GOP's plan would reduce individual and corporate taxes and boost employment, creating 6.2 million jobs over the next decade. The next decade? Do struggling Americans have that much time to wait for economic relief? Furthermore, when asked if an independent economist had reviewed their stimulus plan, the GOP's answer was no. But don't be pessimistic because the GOP's plan also cited that with access to Canadian oil and additional energy proposals, they could have generated an additional one million jobs by 2018? By 2018? The GOP must be joking right?

I tried posting these comments six times yesterday but CNN kept deleting my post. Eventually I had to post my comments in segments, yet only some of my comments went through. The last segment is about the cost of both the Iraq and Afghan wars. But I won't post the numbers here just in case CNN decides to delete it again to protect the GOP. Its something this Republican owned and operated network has been doing for three years to protect the GOP especially if info posted is not in their interest or serve to expose the failed policies of the rightwing leadership.

So please google Research Project "Cost of War" by Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies and see the final cost of the Iraq war and the combine cost of both the Iraq and ongoing Afghan wars. The figures will blow you away. Then ask yourself if this is fiscal responsibility or wasteful spending and decide for yourself which Party has inflated our national deficit and continues to do so. You be the judge!

While I do understand that the enemy needs to be hunted down and destroyed, it is still pretty brazen to attack the enemy in another sovereign nation. I am trying to imagine the outrage if the Pakistanis were killing their enemies on American soil. I guess the US has given up trying to get the Pakistanis to do anything about getting rid of the terrorists as it seems either beyond their abilities or they are just unwilling. Still, I can understand why the Pakistani government might be angry about this and other similar strikes.

They don't have to get embarrassed if they hunt down these bastards themselves. If they can't do it or unwilling to do it, well, we need to get the job done, one way or the other. If Pakistanis have objections, they should first object those guys for taking Pakistan as their home. If Pakistanis are upset, sorry, we can't be as incompetent as them.

I bet if Obama walked over there himself and threw a missile at their forehead, you'd still find excuses to not give credit. You need to understand that these strategic strikes don't happen without the presidents say so. The campaign as a whole would be non-existent without Obama's support of it.

Hate to break it to you. He has staff and generals that make those calls. Obama just accepts blame if there is an issue as their boss.

Yeah the president could say "yes or no" but that is it, he won't be doing the hunting or research, tracking, locating. So thank you Obama for the head nod.

        January 20, 2012 at 12:31 am |
    • Panhandler

If the POTUS is authorizing all the strikes he is wasting his time. That is what the commanders and directors of the various groups are for. Command decisions are made by commanders, it is when the decisions have to come from too far up ( usually anything more than two levels of command) that things fall apart and the stuff hits the ventilator. Of course the pols all want the credit, but it really is not their specific call.

      January 20, 2012 at 12:35 am | Reply
      • Its All Good

Actually Panhandler – it is his call. Do you really think that the military can place an attack on foreign soil without the permission of the President. And by the way, this is against terrorism – so I think this falls square in the sights off what the President should be focussing on. I'm sure Obama not planning the mission, but he surely is involved in giving the go ahead.

We do not need gas dalton!! Want to convert your car to electric? Many people have converted their cars; I will explain what you should do.

One of the biggest reasons why you want to do this is because you want to save money by not having to worry about high gas prices. The prices at the pump fluctuate all the time. Usually prices skyrocket during the weekends and the holidays.

These are the times you travel the most, so you get taken advantage of.You are not the only one in this situation; I was in the same situation until I went built my own electric car.

If you want to say bye to gas forever by converting your vehicle, here is what you need to do:

First you need to get yourself a car kit. Custom car kits are available for specific vehicles and there are also universal kits, which can be installed in various vehicles, that have the same built and weight.

After cleaning your car, you will have to carefully remove the engine from the car and install electric motor in its place. When it comes to the motor you have two choices, you can use an AC or DC. Usually self converted cars have a DC controller and a DC motor.

DC (direct current) motors are simpler, cheaper, and more available.

Next you will have to install batteries that will supply the power; you can put these in your trunk. After this step you should attach the adapter plate.

Once you have done this you can use any outlet to plug in and recharge your auto, but you should install a Magna charging system instead. This charging station is more efficient and effective when it comes to recharging your car batteries.

If you convert your car now, you will enjoy the benefits of not having to pay for gas and driving an environmentally friendly vehicle.

This is absurd. You clearly have no idea how to go about converting a vehicle to electric drive. You can't simply buy a kit for your car. I also have no clue who would put an AC motor in their car. All batteries are DC so why you would ever have an AC motor I have no idea.

Also do you have any idea where we get the materials from batteries? They don't come from America! wether it's Nickel or Lithium mining for these rare earth metals, which are primary components of modern batteries is environmentally devastating. The US has plenty of oil, look it up. We are even exporting it now.

We should keep burning gas and keep shooting bad guys.

Not sure it is such a good idea to keep entering NON Battlefield zones with Drones. Hey we all want these guys but by doing so we are leaving an option for other Countries to do the same. I don't know about anyone else but I don't feel to comfortable in knowing these other Countries can do the same here in the US because we allowed this to continue ourselves. Say China or Russia deems the LA Crips or some other gang as a ter rrorist organization and goes after them with drones? It's a hypothetical situation but that is basically what it is. We will have no say in their using drones to get their te rrrorists wherever and whenever they want.

    • Joe

You're an idiot! The Pakistani government, off the record, condones us going after these these guys! So, it really isn't a good comparison to drones attacking the crips. And the crips don't have the organizational ability to act as a terrorist group...and they haven't flown any planes into buildings. That said, the LAPD might secretly allow Canada to take some of them out, if they were so inclined. I would support it!

Not to mention our own borders! Arming the Cartel/Hizbolla in our Country and in a bordering Country that has already lost 45,000 people isn't exactly the most brilliant move. Especially when we lose our own citizens on US Soil because of it! As for Pakistan..he needs to be cautious in entering Non Battlefield zones with drones..it leaves future problems for our own Nation in regards to doing the same to the US.

This is the pakistani generals greatest fear. they will start cooperating but quickly now.
