Tense Triangle: Iran, Israel and US

By Elise Labott and Jill Dougherty

In seeking to avoid a military confrontation with Iran, the United States is navigating a myriad of potential landmines that has created a tense triangle between Iran, Israel and the U.S.

Most immediately, the United States is trying to make clear to Iran the consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit point for one-fifth of the world's oil.

Washington is doing everything to get its message across but send up smoke signals to warn Iran. In the absence of relations, the United States has used a variety of public statements and secret diplomatic backchannels to send a message to Iran that closing the Strait would be a red-line.

Even after Defense Secretary Leon Panetta publicly warned Tehran against such a move last Thursday, threatening to "respond" if Iran attempts to shut down traffic, the U.S. also sent diplomatic messages through Switzerland - its protecting power in Iran - and through Iraqi President Jalal Talibani.

And just in case Iran was unclear, Washington has sent a rare letter to the Iranian government, delivered by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to Ambassador Mohammad Khazayee, Iran's permanent representative at the U.N., according to a U.S. official who would only speak on the condition of anonymity.

But sending a message to Iran is not so simple, admit administration officials who note there are many power centers in Iran, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khammanei, President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad, and the country's influential clergy. It remains unclear just who these missives should be directed to and who is making the decisions that matter.

The main question is, will U.S. warnings get through to Iran's influential Revolutionary Guard, whose heavily armed boats last week streaked close to the amphibious transport ship, the USS New Orleans? The Pentagon publicly released video of the boats, a warning to the Iranian forces that the United States is closely monitoring them.

Even with clear red-lines, miscalculation could lead to confrontation. In a recent interview with CNN's Barbara Starr, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the top U.S. military commander, was frank about his concerns that Iran would miscalculate American resolve and draw the U.S. into a conflict.

Michael Rubin, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute who worked on Iran at the Pentagon during the Bush administration, believes it's possible. Rubin notes that an Iranian leadership which grew up on the front-line of the Iran-Iraq war or in some theological center is not versed in the ways of the west.

"Wars in the Middle East aren't caused by oil, they are caused fundamentally by one side's overconfidence. When it comes to the Iranians, we have to remember, they are not international diplomats," he warns. "They don't know how the West operates and they may be convinced that the West is a paper tiger."

Even as the United States holds its fire and tries to convince Iran to hold its own, Israel's intentions remain even more of a wild card.

Last week's news that Iran has started to enrich uranium at its underground Fordow facility near Qom has increased U.S. concerns, not just about Iran's nuclear capability but about the possibility of Israel trying to stop it.

Israel has called a nuclear-armed Iran a threat to its survival and has hinted it could take military action to take out its nuclear program if international sanctions fail to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta hinted earlier this month that Iranian moves to build a nuclear bomb would be the ultimate red-line of a military strike, while Israel has indicated it has a much lower bar.

And the recent assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist, which Tehran claims was the work of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, has further raised tensions to a fever pitch.

The United States and Israel have canceled planned large-scale military exercises in the region, which were designed to test their joint air defense systems against incoming missiles, in particular from Iran.

This could lower tensions in the region, albeit probably only temporarily, although U.S. officials insist that was not the reason for the cancellation. Even Gen. Dempsey, who is expected to visit Israel later this week, admitted to CNN's Starr in that same interview that Washington has no guarantees that Israel will give the United States ample warning if it decides to attack Iran.

This high-stakes triangle only includes the immediate dangers of escalation; it doesn't even take into account the likely arms race that would draw in Iran's neighbors, such as Saudi Arabia, if Iran gets the bomb.

It's all a heavy burden for a country that doesn't even talk with Iran– which is why with tensions so high, the United States has suggested to Iran that the two sides establish a channel of direct communication to ensure miscalculations don't escalate.

Such contacts could be helpful, but likely not enough. If Iran believes its own rhetoric and will not budge on international red-lines, it may be headed toward an unavoidable collision course with the West– one that, as Dempsey warned, would be a "tragedy for the region and the world."

Thanks for making me to obtain new tips about pcs. I also contain the belief that one of the best ways to maintain your laptop in leading condition is a hard plastic-type case, as well as shell, which fits over the top of the computer. A majority of these protective gear tend to be model specific since they are manufactured to fit perfectly over the natural covering. You can buy them directly from the vendor, or via third party places if they are for your laptop computer, however not all laptop can have a spend on the market. Once more, thanks for your guidelines.

I look after a vape shop submission site and we have had a listing from a vape store in the United States that additionally offers CBD product lines. A Calendar month later on, PayPal has written to use to claim that our account has been restricted and have requested us to remove PayPal as a payment method from our vape store website directory. We do not offer CBD goods such as CBD oil. We simply offer web marketing services to CBD firms. I have had a look at Holland & Barrett– the UK's Major Wellness Retail store and if you take a close peek, you will see that they promote a comparatively substantial series of CBD product lines, specifically CBD oil and they also happen to take PayPal as a payment method. It seems that PayPal is administering contradictory standards to many different firms. Due to this constraint, I can no longer take PayPal on my CBD-related site. This has constricted my payment possibilities and presently, I am intensely contingent on Cryptocurrency payments and straightforward bank transfers. I have consulted a solicitor from a Magic Circle law practice in The city of london and they said that what PayPal is undertaking is totally against the law and discriminatory as it ought to be applying an uniform criterion to all firms. I am still to check with a different attorney from a US law firm in The city of london to see what PayPal's legal position is in the United States. In the meantime, I would be extremely appreciative if anybody here at targetdomain could offer me with alternative payment processors/merchants that work with CBD firms.

I'd personally also like to mention that most of those who find themselves devoid of health insurance are generally students, self-employed and people who are without a job. More than half in the uninsured are really under the age of 35. They do not sense they are requiring health insurance since they're young along with healthy. Their particular income is frequently spent on houses, food, along with entertainment. Some people that do represent the working class either entire or in their free time are not supplied insurance by way of their work so they go without due to rising expense of health insurance in the usa. Thanks for the strategies you talk about through this website.

Iran has been threatening to close the straits for 30 years! The US supported brutal dictators in Iran & their border states for decades. We threaten them with attack, field armies on east & west border countries, & sail carrier battlegroups off their coast. That would make the most sane countries leaders paranoid.

Follow the money, the rumors of war and actual wars are support our military industrial complex and to supply our banker (China) with subsidized low cost resources (below market oil from Iran, minerals from Afghanistan, etc.) http://battleland.blogs.time.com/2012/01/13/the-perfect-headline-on-the-silent-sino-american-limited-liability-partnership/

    @togirl:

YOU SAID "I would like to see the foreign broadcasts from these countries shown here in the west with full accurate translations. I'd like the western audiences to see and hear exactly what these countries are saying. It shouldn't be too difficult, and then we can decide for ourselves what they say to us and what they say to their home audiences.:

    Absolutely well Said!

While we hear day in day out Islamic supporters like Mr.FAREED ZAKARIA, Dean ObeidALLAH, Imam Rauf, Ethan Caseyetc. that we have got the Muslim world totally wrong, the facts are exactly the opposite!

Ignoring for a moment what the radicals say, why don't we TRANSLATE only the speeches, columns for their domestic audiences of only those people whom WE CONSIDER to be MODERATES in the West?

One of the masters in this art was Pakistan's Gen. Mushraff who has openly boasted in several of his lectures at US universities/Think Tanks that "He had become a Master in TIGHT ROPE WALKING – saying one thing to the Americans and the exact opposite to his brethren back in Pakistan just to keep both of them happy" which also meant gleaning American aid, and passing it on to the Taliban to kill our own brave soldiers, and to whip up Anti-Americanism in Pakistan!!!

Unfortunately, the naive western man get easily deceived by people's attires (well cut 3 piece suits & ties), their clean shaven look, liking for all things American (Movies, cars etc.), possibly living in the west or occasionally even married to western women. What they don’t realize that while some use this as a cover for their COVERT activities, others exploit all these freedoms the west offers ONLY as a way to success while REMAINING ISLAMIC SYMPATHIZERS deep down while pretending to be ardent patriots!!! (Are you listening Mr.ZAKARIA, Mr. OBEIDALLAHh???)

So, surely there is an urgent need to highlight those aspects to those NAIVE & GULLIBLE Americans, Europeans, Indians, even Jews (like Mayor Bloomberg) who DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE WAYS OF THE MUSLIM WORLD (Incl. many Muslims right here in the West!).

Having said that, there are several such WORD TO WORD translations, videos available on the internet if ONLY we care to look!

First of all, I wish no country had nuclear bombs. However I find it very hypocritical that the haves can dictate to the have nots. If my enemy had bombs I would want them as well. You cannot blame Iran for wanting to get them.

What if Canada want to build a nuclear bomb and Russia along with China, tried to prevent us because of our western liberal ways. Would they be right in doing so?

Unfortunately we can never go back and sooner or later they will posses them. Diplomacy is the only way...

All the west has to do is allow Iran to exchange it's processed nuclear fuel on it's own territory and this issue would evaporate. The west said no to that idea. Why? Because the west loves tension in the middle east. It then generates massive military hardware and a few people in America make billions. Sometimes they miscalculate and war breaks out costing the west billions but that is ok because the general public picks up the tab for all the lost military equipment and looking after all the vets who come home with half their brains missing and limbs......the costs of looking after them for the rest of their lives has been estimated to cost billions. Meanwhile the military industry makes billions. And the general public remains as ill informed as ever and can't figure out why they are broke or where their pension money has gone. It is incredibly interesting to watch.

Personally I feel going to war with Iran will escalate into World War III. I came arcoss an article that was interviewing a General in the Chinese military basically saying that if Iran is attacked it will be looked at as a threat towards their nation. Now whether or not that is accurate who knows, but I know one thing, China has close ties with Russia and going to war with 2nd and 3rd powerhouses in the world, doesnt sound like a good idea financially. We cannot afford another war period. Now chances are Russia and China probably wont get envolved, but I feel we shouldn't take any chances allowing this to escalate into a world war. US needs to be the bigger man here and figure out an agreement with Iran before things get real ugly. Considering we were spending about 20 billion a month to keep are military in Iraq and afghanistan, imagine another war with Iran and the possibility of other powerhouses getting involved. We need to seek every other option available before we consider war. We are already experiencing choatic times-why make it worst. If you think today is bad, try to imagine the country going bankrupt.
A lot of what we read is propaganda and the media is trying to paint a picture in the heads of all that we are the good guys and we havent done anything wrong. Although I love my country, I think we need to stop being the world police and create a new foriegn policy. We are creating more enemies then allies and like history shows every empire comes to an end. If the US wants to be the dominent force in the world we need to change and focus on us not the world.
Now as far as allowing Iran to have nuclear capabilities-no they shouldnt be allowed to have nuclearer weapons. Now if they are using the uranium to develop nuclearer energy that may help their economy then why not? We obviously need to continue monitoring their development and if there is practical evidence that they are developing nukes then we take appropriate action. America cant afford another war, the Iranians no this which is why they are taunting the US. If every effort of coming up with an agreement fails then and only then should we consider military action. Iranians would be fools not to negotiate with us but at the same time would you want a foreign nation setting the rules and standards of how you operate as a nation? The US would destroy Iran with no question, but at what cost, what impact would it have on the american people?

While that is a possible scenario, you missed the point of the Sino-Soviet split: the Russians and Chinese hate each other. Also consider Iranian-North Korean-Chinese ties. If North Korea feels threatened, they may invade the South; they're already unstable. But the Chinese have too much money invested in the U.S. to attack it.

We cant afford another war. We cant afford to feed our own country.
IF we went to war with Iran, we we just do what the govt doesnt like to do all the time which is go in, Kill everyone and then leave em be, unlike Iraq and Afghanistan. If we went to war with a country like Iran, we would completely destroy them until there was nothing left. Because we wouldnt be able to afford to rebuild ANOTHER country, and provide aid to PEOPLE WHO HATE US.

Finally I say this. If Iran were to succesfully build a nuclear device, it would be stolen within a matter of hours by a terrorist or militia group, or hell another country, and used dsicrectly against whoever the new owner decides it should be used on. And there would be nothing anyone could do about it. So strap in, grab some MREs and bottle water. And get ready.

Elise Labott and Jill Dougherty you use this word "triangle" which insinuates that there are three parties involved. The funny thing is that if you were to draw a triangle between Iran, Israel, and USA, you'd find its very obtuse. This of course makes you wonder why its a triangle at all and why the US is involved at all. You see, there is no legitimate political, or military reason to be involved with Iran at all. They are another sovereign nation and contrary to what you and your ilk in the media tell the American public every day, not at war with them. The Mossad isn't all that worried about them, and they are a neighbor. Stop contributing to all this fear-mongering and hawking. WE ARE BROKE! WE CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER GODDAMMED WAR! Keep a cool head in a confrontational situation. Iran overrates its capabilities and is gambling with the U.S, It seems to have overlooked the fact that Its sabre rattling and provocative behaviour could be suicidal Iran is surrounded by hostile neighbours. Both Saudi Arabia and Israel will be ready to strike, if it sparks an armed conflict. In fact it should focus on finding out who killed the nuclear scientist last week. I'm sorry, but can someone PLEASE help clarify this article for me, I am a student and I am not as political savvy and I just want to clarify that I am comprehending the content of this article correctly before writing a brief about it. So, to my understanding Iran is harassing US by sending its ships close to our territory of where we are able to receive their supply of oil in the Strait of Hormuz. AND they are also threatening us by possibly closing the Strait of Hormuz, which would be horrible for us because otherwise how would we receive our oil? US response to this is that if they do continue to harass us and decide to close the strait, we will take military action, correct? does this necessarily mean war? or is it just like a precaution that would occur before a war would be considered? and another issue i see here is the threat of Iran's plans to drop mines in the strait. According to my understanding, this possible use of weapons is what has Israel worried and they may decide to attack Iran which would cause another issue, correct? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME. i need to find the actors in this situation, as well as what their preference outcomes are and what their possible outcomes are. also, i need to find out what interactions hinder states in reaching a cooperative solution to this dispute (bargaining, coercion, agenda setting, etc.) and if there are any international institutions being helpful in resolving this dispute THANKS FOR ANY HELP

student, this situation is pretty simple to understand. The US and other western countries have bullied a sovereign nation by freezing its assets internationally for wanting a power source all the western nations has, nuclear. Regardless of whether or not they are intending to make a weapons, these nations have made clear they would rather put the final nail in their bankruptcy than talk with and/or cooperate with Iran. Iran is now like a wounded animal trapped in a corner, wanting to lash out. In this case they are trying to find any leverage they can to force the west to leave them alone. Rather than walk away though, the prideful west is making counter threats.

It can all be compared to a bully stealing lunch money from a wimpy kid because he's building the same toy the bully has.

First off, the conflict is about Iran attempting to build a nuclear weapon. Iran thinks it has the right to use nuclear energy, and apparently no-one disagrees with this, as the Russians built a reactor for them in Bashir. The problem is that Iran continues to build out nuclear capability and is enriching Uranium beyond what is needed for use in a reactor. So the US has threatened Iran with sanctions in order to stop their behavior, and most of the US's allies are following along. These sanctions will destroy the Iranian economy, so they are threatening to close access to the Persian Gulf. Although the US gets very little oil from the middle east, Europe and Asia does, and it isn't clear if the other suppliers can increase supply enough so countries like Japan can get oil without giving Iran any money.

Israel will not tolerate any hostile nation around it to have nuclear weapons. It has already destroyed reactors in Iraq and Syria to prevent this, and it appears reasonable to think that if Iran continues along it's path Israel will respond. It should be pointed out that no-one wants War with Iran. Israel is already in a low-level conflict with Iranian proxies in Lebanon and to a small extent Hamas. Even with this Israel doesn't want a war with Iran, which it knows it cannot win decisively. Even if Israel succeeds in destroying Iranian underground installations, Iran will continue as an independent state, so all it can do is stop Iran temporarily.

Iran has the power in this situation, if it stops trying to enrich nuclear fuel, there is no justification for an attack by anyone. It is their unwillingness to do so that has caused all the European and most Asian nations to join the US in the economic sanctions. You should know that the Iranian regime itself is unstable, and has to use force to control it's own population. The economic sanctions are sure to increase pressure within Iran. So much so that Iran has no choice but to stop on it's path or invite war. The sanctions will probably be enough to force internal regime change in Iran, since they know that they cannot win in a war with the US. So either they stop trying to build nukes and end the sanctions, or the regime gets overthrown from within.

There seems to be a definitive slant that Jason K has on this issue who obviously has a viewpoint on this matter that disregards objectivity.

This all started when the US and it's allies realized via clandestine means that Iran was building a nuclear facility. Understanding Iran' history in times of war and their decisions to oust several countries from Iran who had embassies there, put a question to why they were doing this. Over time the UN and the IAEA became involved in the determination of what they were in fact doing with a nuclear facility. The reason for this (so called bullying) was do to the international communities commitments to disband nuclear capabilities that were designed toward mass destruction. Since Iran chose to NOT be a part of the international community and supported countries such as N. Korea and their military ambitions, it became the prudent thing to do by inspecting first hand what Iran was really up to with their nuclear ambitions.

The claim has always been that Iran has been building a nuclear facility for peaceful purposes and was to be used for power. Now that the IAEA has finished their report that the nuclear facilities are designed for and are in preparation to produce weapons grade uranium, the ultimate questions by the international community along with the US has turned to concern. In addition and most recent, it has come to light that Iran has an underground facility for the sole purpose of enriching uranium and frankly, you don't produce power underground.

So for the years that all this has taken to get to this point, sanctions have now been levied against Iran that are deeper sanctions than they have ever experienced and it is hitting the country directly where they make their money, the sale of crude oil.

Therefore Iran has taken the stance that if the sanctions take their ability to sell their oil, then they will choke of the Strait of Hormuz where 1/5th of the worlds oil supply is shipped through. They have also threatened other Gulf Nations that if they produce more oil to offset what Iran can't sell, then they will respond upon them militarily.

In the meantime tensions are rising with Israel where Iran is concerned and their nuclear ambitions because they believe that Iran' intentions ultimately are that Iran plans to use these nuclear weapons on Israel. These countries are arch enemies and have been for decades, with numerous reasoning's depending on who explains them.

With tensions high and very difficult ways to communicate with Iran directly, matters have become a high profile of concern where the US, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, and now all the other Gulf Nations are concerned. Iran' methods of seclusion and contrite behavior where communicating to the outside world is concerned is what is making all these matters all the more difficult to come to any resolve.

This has nothing to do with oil for the US, we obtain 99% of our oil elsewhere, we, the US however, provide a vast amount of diplomacy world wide and for as much as many want to refer to the US as bullies, we are in fact the facilitator, the director, the supervisor, the parent that a multitude of countries turn to for diplomatic assistance.

Me thinks you need a little more history. This goes back WW2 with the Axis & Allies competing over middle east oil. Fast forward to the CIA installing the Shah in a coup, fast forward to the Shaw along with Saudi help breaking the oil embargo, fast forward to the Shah being overthrown and the hostage crisis, fast forward to US support of Iraq in the war with Iran, fast forward to the US taking over Iraq & Afghanistan. Iran is now selling oil below world prices to gain support against US attack and believes having "The Bomb" will protect them from outside attack. This has everything to do with OIL (the vast majority goes to Asia & Europe, not the US) and supporting the US military industrial complex.

Let Iran have their nukes. It will bring stability to the region, rather than the current situation. Right now you have this military powerhouse there, annually funded with billions of dollars and armed to the teeth by the US. All you are doing with these illegal sanctions and assinations of civilian scientists is increasing tension and the possibility of the breakout of war. If Iran wanted to get hold of a nuke to actually plant and detonate it inside Israel, they could have easily done that years ago by acquiring it from Russia, China or Pakistan.

Iran having a nuke would change nothing. Why doesn't Iran attack Israel with a standard force? Because they know Israel would wipe the floor with them with their air force. Apply this logic, why would a nuclear Iran never "attempt" to nuke Israel, because Israel has more, and better systems to detect, and destroy the enemy's nuke. Then within 20 minutes turn the entirety of Iran into another Sahara Desert.

A nuclear Iran is less threatening than the current North Korea because Iran is SURROUNDED by those that would pounce on them immediately. Korea only has the south keeping them in check. China really doesn't care, they'd rather them duke it out so they can come in and "reunify" them back into the fold of China.

        January 17, 2012 at 4:51 pm |
    • rick

why would anybody in their right mind want to allow nuclear weapons in the hands of a culture that raises death to a performance art painting the past with stoning and the future with spreading radioactivity. Israel owes its very creation, existence and continued survival to the United States and anyone who says otherwise is uniformed. Israel should be very careful about defying our wishes by attacking Iran and fanning the flames of a very tense situation. The US and the rest of the World is resolute in preventing a rogue nation, such as Iran, from having nuclear weapons and Israel should stay out of the way and let us handle this. All we need is for Israel to start a war we have to come in and finish.

You are absolutely correct: Israel does owe its existence to the US. Mostly because of financial aid, support and guilt over refusing to allow jews in during WWII despite the fact they knew what Hitler was doing to us.

My fear is that Iran will goad Israel into responding, and Israel be the first strike. The US won't be able to move in between Israel and Iran fast enough. Should they take out Israel, what would prevent Iran from going after others in the ME?? Absolutely nothing.

Israel exists because of WWII and widespread anti-semitism. Don't lay this on the feet of the USA. Britain occupied that region, and the UN et al helped create it. Israel exists because jews were being killed everywhere else. Israel exists because they can, and do, defend themselves. We should support them in any case because they are the only democracy in the region. As for Iran, they've made the intentions clear. Denying that reality is dangerous, whether they said they wanted to destroy (literally) Saudi Arabia, Israel, or anyone else.

The UN Charter in 1947 happened because the USA wanted it to happen. Even the Soviets went along with what America wanted in the immediate years following WWII. The US has supported Israel financially, politically and militarily the entire length of it's existence. Israel has defended itself successfully in it's little "wars', because the Arab countries knew America was ready to jump in if Israel's survival was really threatened. If Israel strikes Iran and provokes a war, Israel could not survive a determined attack from Iran without the help of the United States. You can bet the Israeli military leaders are quite aware of that little fact.

@togirl – Israel will send a FAX when they release their nuclear weapons during the flight of a missile aimed at them from Iran, because they will know that they're about to be obliterated. Maybe because the US was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Perhaps guilt over not allowing refugees into the US during WWII. Maybe compassion for the underdog.

I also don't like everything Israel does, but I guarantee I share more values with them and the US than any of the Arab states. I don't object to their existence, but they object to mine. I have a problem with that.

Can anybody comes up by giving an example like this about Iranian people. Why a tiny Country like Israel is the most important country in the world these days? why the people know the brutality of war better than any other nation and tasted it are after killing and killing by all means to protect themselves instead of showing to the world war & killing is not the only solution and even though it is difficult but slap the faces of dictators by solving their problem with anything other than just destroying. Just because they want to expand the land since (all the Jewish people want to go back to that land )may be it is time to keep what they have and start expanding in other part of this Earth to save life. .come on people we are the children of only one god no matter what religious we believe in do not make the God to be more disappointed in humans (us)

When ever the subject of Iran and Israel comes up, we get the same slew of anti-Semitic trolls masquerading as "anti-Zionist". According to them Israel, not iran, is the real enemy. These people are letting their hate cloud their thinking.

The following is a statement by the late Ayatollah Khomeini about the goals of Islam.

Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of other [countries] so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world...Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured [by the unbelievers]?

Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] psalms and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.

So let's not worry about Iran getting a nuclear weapon.

There are a lot of people even in the US media who are doing precisely this by sugarcaoting Islam for naive & gullible Americans. My own former countryman (from India) CNN's Mr.Fareed Zakaria, Dean ObeidALLAH, and ofcourse Imam Rauf, and others such as Ethan Casey are all carrying on this tirade against forces thought of as enemies of the Muslim world incl. America, Israel, India, Europe, Russia etc. These people never ever lose an opportunity to show us in a poor light misusing the west's own freedoms (religious, speech etc.), even while pretending to be ardent patriots!

Thankfully an increasing number of Americans, Indians, Europeans are seeing through their often sugarcoated language, their half truths, cherry picked facts etc. to unravel the their hidden Islamic agenda.

Why can't all the people in the region just embrace each other as brothers on the planet and live in peace? Share the holy sites in an atmosphere of friendship. The alternative is destruction of people and revered buildings.

CHECK THIS OUT-If you believe we should let Iran go nuclear or let Pakistan keep their nukes (as RON PAUL says!). Little lengthy but a MUST READ!

The following mail from a Pakistani keeps cropping up every now & then. May be this guy Qader Khan is a nut, but what if we have even one such nut somewhere up the Pakistani army/govt. In fact there already have been several...e.g.: the former ISI Chief Mohammed Gul and also A Q Khan. Just do a google check to see what all they have said about the US, Israel & India, and also in general against Christians, Jews & Hindus.

So, here's what Qadir Khan has said and the link to it:
    opinion-maker. org/2011/11/husain-haqqani-raymond-davis-the-2nd/by Qader Khan

We will crush the infidel RAW-CIA-MOSSAD axis. Operation Al-Boraq is in progress, the hour of Pakistan's glory, and the utter defeat of the USA-ISRAEL-INDIA axis is near! Our engineers have been tirelessly working in extreme heat deep beneath the Mexican-American Sonoran desert border to construct tunnels through which we have supplied suitcase-sized nuclear bombs to the faithful mujahedeen. Our faithful mujahideen in India, Israel and the USA have also been issued scores of suitcase-sized nuclear bombs to lie in wait for a signal from Islamabad. In phase 1 of Operation Al-Boraq, at the appointed sunset hour, upon a signal from Islamabad, scores of suitcase nuclear bombs will be detonated simultaneously in India, destroying for ever that den of infidels. In phase 2 of Opearation Al-Boraq, exactly 6 hours later, when night falls upon Israel, our mujahedeen shall detonate the nuclear charges in Haifa, Tel-Aviv and other cities, destroying for ever that country of sinners. 6 more hours later, Phase 3 of Operation Al-Boraq shall involve detonation of the suitcase nukes simultaneously throughout the major cities in the USA. Thus, within 18 hours, the world shall be rid forever of the 3 major centers of anti-Islamic thought, and Islam shall rule the world, with Pakistan as its leader! Nobody will know where the bombs came from, so there will be no fear of reprisal in any shape or form. Yes, no doubt a few good Mussalmans shall die in the process, but they are guaranteed heaven unlike the infidels. For the true believers there is never death; only heaven & its rewards

I hope Iranians defuse the situation by stopping the nuclearprogram.

I mean it starting to get ridiculous. Iran is already under a attack by a covert war (viruses, assassinations, spying by drones) against it's program. It actually has a plenty of reasons all ready to strike back but why does nothing happen?

Is it because they now that a retaliation will mean war and that they know that they will "autolose"? Or is because they are not that "hotheaded" that some people think (or hope) they are?

Or is it because they are incapable to strike back?

Now west gave them a new reason to retaliate by implementing sanctions against the economy. In the meantime west are even setting up missile-defences against Iran in Turkey – a whole system against a single country. I say it again; it's ridiculous!

It all seems so calculated, like planners are expecting a missilestrike, because of the escalating hostile policy against Iran and have prepared for it for a long time.

I really do hope Iran use their cool and come back to the table and says:

-"Ok we stop the nuclear program for now, would that make you feel less nervous? Can you please lift the sanctions now?"

I think that is the only way now to avoid a huge exhausting war with enormous amount of casualties.

Up to now, the iranians have not attacked any country at all, and it is forbidden in their culture to do so by law. I dont belive in any of the sides in this possible war, but what i do know is that war this time will be big scale if it escalates. China has said it will support Iran, and russia have according to their newspaper pravda, armed the border which means three superpowers and iran+ israel are already involved with plans that may yet not come to reality ,but its very dangerous. No side will win if they play out the china card ,it will take all nato + conscript forces to withstand both russia and china for more than a month if ,its not escalated to chemical or atomic warfare, which frankly will wipe out israel and iran together in a big blast. US ,china and russia might cool down after some major problems taken place but as the war isnt gonna be in their backyard ,other than russias, its likely it can be stopped. There is however very little chance that anyone win this situation with armaments,so i would go for kissingers line if i were them, and solve it by using real diplomats, and not by using governmental heads and leaders to solve what shouldnt even have left a discussion table from the beginning. I live in northern Erurope, and frankly im afraid we will loose major if the former warsaw member countries rise to force at the same time + china. Its not likely turkey will help israel either as the diplomacy now is frosty between israel and turkey due to the recent boarding of gaza ships last year. What we face may be a possible holochaust of gigantic proportions and it is vital they return to the tables. US has not even 20% of nukes compared to what they face if it escalates, and Russia even have a space batallion nowdays, which will destroy all gps sattelites, as they do not need it.Its called strategic space division and is contrary to Nasa, not peaceful 🙁

So Iran threatens the world by getting the bomb.(?) We have a large navy within an hours flying time of most of Iran and they threaten us? Couldn't agree more. It is time for peace. Please tell that to the Iranians that announcing that 'Israel should be wiped off the map' isn't peaceful and neighbourly.

I live in Canada, and can just imagine what the US would do if we suddenly announced that we were going to send bombs over the 49th parallel (our border).

Why aren't the Israelis allowed to be concerned? When someone announces their intention to destroy us, we take it seirously. Hitler taught us that. We don't need ot hear it twice.

When are you going to come to the realization that YOU are the problem, You are in a new world where your culture and mindset hinders you from looking at anyone else's viewpoint but your own.
All you ever do is blame your problems on the "zionists" and the "american imperialists"(which there is not a shred of evidence that we have occupied any country as the name implies)
Take some personal responsibility and fix yourselves before it's too late and the whole world gets sick of you. Ask Adolf Hitler how the whole world hating you turned out.
As an American I am willing to let you live in your hole in peace as long as you leave me alone; don't bother us like Japan did...They woke the sleeping giant and paid the price. (on a side note: after we dominated them things went much smoother, Japan is now one of America's closest allies, they learned the lesson well of not messing with America.)

Iran is making its bed. Israel or the US has nothing to do with what Iran is producing. Israel is not the Middle East problem, the governments and the religious factions are the problems. They always have been the problem. To say the US should just let Israel fight it own problems, is pretty ignorant, because their problems are our problems. The problems of the middle east have been there since the Koran was written. You have Islamic rulers who are big men with big balls who try to control every aspect of everybodies lives. Instead of using the money they get from oil to better their country, they use it to buy big houses, big cars, big corporations, etc. As long as greed, power, and religion are intermixed in the middle east, you will never see the problems go away. You have to let people have their voice heard, not just the rulers. As long as this continues, so will all the problems in the middle east. So, back to the conflict that Iran is rousing up! I don't think Iran is thinking very clearly. Why would you want to go against the biggest, baddest, toughest, bravest, and number one military in the world? This clearly indicates that the ruling party of Iran really doesn't want what is best for their country. They only want what is best for THEM! Too bad 1000's of people will have to die and suffer because of Iran's ignorant, selfish, greedy government. But hey! All this conflict crap can be put by the way side! How? By Iran owning up to its international responsibilities, and by making Iran and its people, its number one objective. I am amazed how so many Middle Eastern people hate the west, and why? The USA has only been around for a couple hundred years, yet they are so strong, and the people in the USA are so lucky to have what they do have compared to the rest of the world. The Middle East has been around for 1000's of years, but still have areas that continue the violence. Violence is not the answer to the worlds problems. Just as is the government of a country that rules with an iron fist. If you don't start having the people have a say, then the problems will continue. We all know that all Muslims are not jihadists. We all know that trying to take over the world for Islam isn't going to happen, and why should it. Trying to do something that impossible is another definition of insanity. I do know that God would never have his followers kill others in the name of God. Why anybody would do this is just insane. I hope SOON that the worlds Muslims will quit using the Palestinians as pawns in their quest to dominate the world. Yes, that is what the Palestinians are, a bunch of pawns in a big game being played out between the West and all the Muslim militant factions of the world. All the while, the Palestinians suffer. This is all so plainly ridiculous! Why not everybody start using their brains to see how they can help the Palestinians so they have something more than the quest to kill Israeli's? Instead of all the rockets being sent into Israel, all the money being spent on how to attack Israel (Iran, you listening), all the crap that comes along with it, all needs to stop, and all the money and effort trying to kill Israel (it isn't ever going to happen either) should all be turned around and used to help the Palestinians create a state that they can become proud of. Not a state that is the area where Israel will be attacked! Start using all the work and effort and money to better all the peoples lives in the area. Start advertising love, peace, goodwill towards men and women. Positive reinforcement instead of all the negative. POSITIVE POSITIVE POSITIVE. Work with, not war with, help them, not hinder, cooperation not rejection! Try it Middle East and see what happens!

      Interesting question!!

Once they've 'gotten rid of the jews' as they keep threatening, they'll probably come after the Christians and other minority groups. Why?? Because you're an infidel too, and you didn't accept Allah way back when. And then when it's too late, you'll understand why it is important to STAND UP NOW AND SAY NO to Iran and other extremists.

But there won't be anyone to help you then, because you chose not to help or stand up for Israel now. Bombs don't care about religion, they kill everyone equally.

So? Let them? Seriously! Let's just drop the dithering and rock and roll. There is pretty much a base understanding that at some time in the near future there WILL be a war between islamists and the 'west'. Sad but true.

What is odd however is the fact that muslims and christians have more in common with each other than either do with the zionists. Even orthodox jews around the globe stand against the zionist agenda. This is fact. Of course the zionists and their sycophants just label even other jews as, get this, 'self loathers', harharhar! Does anyone not think for a moment that the zionists would just love to see a war between muslim and christians? The lslamic 'new testament' is the Koran and represents the word of 'their' prophet Allah. The christian 'new testament' we call as such and it represents the word of 'their' prophet Jesus. The jews are still waiting for their 'new testament' prophet and consider both Muslims and Christians as false people.

Regardless of religion no race kills better than the western race. If Iran does seek war against the 'west' she better be prepared to be ravaged. For all the pretty dressings of our society always remember it was built with nothing but wonton savagery. Ask the indigenous of North, Central, and South America if you doubt at all.

Well STAN, as a confimed and unashamed zionist, why on earth would I want to see a war between muslims and christians?? How would that solve anything? Why on earth would you believe crap like that??

I'd like to be left alone, in peace with secure borders. I think the Israelis feel the same way, however their neighbours refuse to acknowledge their right to live in peace. Or to exist for that matter.

All this absurd saber rattling by a corrupt extremist totalitarian government, while the actual people of Iran suffer. Israel has the right idea of covertly going in and removing the threat, while the war-mongering USA is just chomping at the bit to go in and start another illegal war to support the neocon military industrial complex. Iran will not attack USA, nor Israel. USA needs to put "stupid dogs from Iran" on leash (economically shutdown Central Bank a good start). Followup with targeted covert military activities aimed at destablishing proxies – Syria, Hamas with help from Israel and others. Expand NATO influences with Missile Defense Shield and keep pressure on.

If that fails to get their attention....apply a naval blockage of the oil exports from IRAN and totally kill their economy. Stopping short of war only due to respect for Iranians who would love to execute their own leaders – first!

    Dear Iran,

The US was built on Biblical principals. God has favor for the US. Israelite s are Gods chosen people. We defend his people. Try to remember how the story ends, Gods people will prevail. Can't change it no matter how you wish. The terror that you create towards Israel and to the world is a reminder that evil does exists in this world. So by in saying, thank you for reminding the world why man is so evil. It opens the door for people to change for the better. Everything works for the glory of God...including Iran, an evil nation.

Think about it, Jon. The adherents of every ancient religion thought they were God's chosen people, from Egypt to Sumeria, to the Maya. The Biblical Old Testament was compiled from scraps of different versions a thousand years after the mythical Abraham. The New Testament was compiled at least 200 years after the events described in it. What possible evidence is there that Jews are God's chosen people? Israel is a warped theocracy that criminally and immorally kills and displaces the indigenous people of Palestine. Jefferson and most of the other Founders devised a system in which by law the government could not institute Christian principles. Ask yourself why in Europe Christianity is dying and churches are closing. Christianity is important in the USA because many of our citizens come out of rural and provincial areas. They are poorly read and educated. I don't want to dissuade your from your religion, but isn't it manifestly evident that the Bible is not an accurate history of humanity?

Good luck in your faith, Jon. I hope it comforts you. I think we can dispense with the individual who tags messages with suggestions that the author should read more. I lived for years in the Middle East and have taught its history for many more years. The suggestion that the Palestinians are not the indigenous inhabitants of Syro-Palestine, however, is a good point. A long trail of stone tools in Egypt shows that early hominids came out of Africa via Egypt and into the Western Mediterranean area, and Homo neanderthalis bones and artifacts have been found in Israel and adjoining countries. The first modern Homo sapiens traveled the same route. Modern Europeans have about 1-4% Neanderthal genes, and the earliest modern humans of the Western Mediterraneans probably had a higher percentage. They drove the Neanderthals into extinction about 30,000 years ago. The point is, where do you cut this continuum of human inhabitants and define the "indigenous" people? Modern genetic studies shows the folly of trying to identify the so-called indigenous people.

As ambiguity exists whether the Supreme Leader, President or the clergy “calls the (ultimate) shots” in Iran, a nightmarish situation will arise if Iran “gets” the nuclear arsenal as its command & control will be contested by influential sections.

Yes no more wars! What a concept. You didn't have to go to war with Iraq; they didn't cause 9/11 and they didn't have WMD. Yet you still went to war with them anyway! Well good ol' Bush had to do something, didn't he?? Americans, and I mean both parties, voted for that war and nobody had a clue what they were doing, and nobody was interested in listening to cooler heads.

If Iran strikes Israel, you may not have a choice. I'd prefer no wars, but jeez, the Iranians, (or at least the guys in power) don't give a rats*** what we in the west want. They can be as contrary as they like.

Israel, not United States, is Iran's enemy. An Iran with nuclear weapons will disrupt Israel's cruel and outrageously exercised Mideast hegemony. All our Mideast wars have been against our interests, yet successfully advocated by the Jewish state. Again against our interests, Israel has involved us in increasingly overt operations against Iran. Spies and American military drones in Iranian airspace are the most recent revelations. Since before 9/11, American soldiers have been dying for the Jewish state. We are at war. Who did this to us? Israel, AIPAC, the One Percent and other organized and monied Israel Firsters have corrupted our politicians and entire electoral system. Justice and the future of America demand that they be prosecuted and jailed.

thank you "JohnWV" for expressing the Palestinian/muslim mantra so clearly and unequivocally : "woe is me, woe is me, Israel is the cause of our misery". So true, so true, the Arabs losing 3 wars they started against Israel in 1948,1967, and 1973 would piss anyone off! palestinians bombing school buses, killing athletes at the olympics, teaching hatred to their children and that killing jews gets rewarded have a right to their victimhood, pathetic though it might be and so palestinians, keep sending rockets and whining the mantra: "woe is me , woe is me, we send one rocket, they send back three" So, John, keep up the mantra;"Woe is me, woe is me, its everyone else's fault for our misery". Wf\hen you recognize what the mantra should be, it will probably be too late:"woe is me, woe is me, I am my own worst enemy"

In the past, politicians in countries facing economic disaster they make often in the war in a last attempt to regain power. This is even more likely if a country permeated by shocks and considers war as a last option to overcome the economic stalemate.
U.S. overcame its worst economic crisis, of the last century, with entry into 1st Wold War. Overcame the crisis of the global economy through the union in World War II, and now tempted to resolve the third crisis in a similar way.

In the past, politicians in countries facing economic disaster often they make the war a teleEinai evident that the U.S. overcame its worst economic crisis, of the last century, with entry into the war Apagkosmio. Overcame the crisis of the global economy through the union in World War II, and now tempted to resolve the third crisis in a way similar.

    1. The right-wing prime minister of Israel is belligerent and unpredictable. Constantly argues that Israel is under the ever-changing threats from Iran, none of which has not been verified. However, the tone becomes sharper, and more recently, a few months ago had traveled in all major cities of the world to support the polls. Ms. Merkel said that he has committed against with "faith until death." Before the world wars, the same commitment was made by Wilhelm II to the Austrians, while the British and French did the same with Poland.

    2. Israel has already obtained nuclear submarines delivered by Germany with nuclear missiles at positions close to Iran, and Georgia not only rebuilt the base of the rocket, which was destroyed before half time from Russia, and turned against Iran and strengthened it with 90 additional experts in the U.S. missiles.

    3. Week by week, the tone of the world press influenced by Israel against Iran is becoming more acute, for various reasons – the same strategy of propaganda by false allegations, prepared the world – and forced to become more collaborative – before the war in Iraq. Also, the military preparations are at an advanced stage. The U.S. military forces have failed so far to "appease" two neighboring countries Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, at which time the invasion had created the largest military concentration in known history. Moreover, near the coast of Iran, the U.S. also carry the greatest concentration of naval forces have ever committed in history.

Israel doesn't need to turn the world press against Iran, Iran is doing a helluva good job turning the world press and the world in general, except syria and maybe Somalia and of course, you and your ant-semitic brethren against it. Do you think that the non anti semites that read these posts are all stupid and don't know who is threatening who? who is the state that teaches their children to hate and that suicide/homicide bombing is rewarded by paradise/ what state runs by Islamic principles and believes stoning of women is appropriate at any time and killing Jews gets you a star on the forehead? keep singing for your palestinian brothers: "woe is me, woe is me, its not us causing our misery. It's all your fault."

Rick get your facts right! Iran is a great nation and has no misunderstanding with anyone. you guys have to understand the Iranian mentality, If you are nice and kind they are double that to you. If you dictate them and force them, they retaliate.
Most Iranian's want to get on with their Life and have no intention of occupying or misunderstanding with any nation.
If you look at history, Iranian are the one that saved the Jewish Race. Most Iranian's have nothing against any religion or country. as I mentioned, they do not like to be told what to do. that is in their GEN. wrong or right. is a personal or national decision made by individuals or groups. My view on this is the war is not against anyone. we have ruined global economy, and just to be able to survive our artificial life style and economies, we need to create scenarios, to increase commodity prices. how is going to benefit!? the commodity producing countries and traders. who are these people!? Money greedy people. this has nothing to do with religious or nation or Race......
we can not leave peacefully in our time or any other Time in future. Next we are conquering other planets ,resources and commodity from those planets which would be the arm and back bone of economy in future, will lead to greater wars to increase prices in commodity in result for a Nation or Nations to have an economy rise.
I can go on and argue the fact, Human being greed is the cause of all down falls. So all this is not personal. It is just business as usual.

Hey, here's a tip – if you don't try to economically strangle a country, they won't try to kick you in the nuts ("close the Strait of Hormuz").

    Simple.
    Cause and Effect.

Oh, and pretending that you KNOW they are trying to develop a nuclear weapon is bad form, also – especially after the Iraq F-up.

      Dear People of Iran,
The United States has every right to stop Iran, a theocracy from developing a devastating weapon. Theocracies, more importantly Islamic Theocracies have an 'eternal' flaw when working with the rest of the world. 'They', the Islmaic Republic of Iran, are 'God's' government and are, by definition, unable to recognize any other government's legitimicy.

        Wrong definition of God's Government.

Frankly, no one can run God's Government other than God Himself. Iran is not God's government and neither do they consider themselves to be. Do they run the planets, the sun the stars? Are they the ones keeping us alive? They try to follow what they understand of God's commands while consistently trying to ensure that they have not misunderstood anywhere.

Furthermore, I can't recall a single instance in which they have lied or deceived like other countries do. They must be doing something right.

my dear friend, closing Hormuz, will bring global disaster, all people including you, I all our families and human Race will be deserted.
There be no electricity, no food, no life and it leaves no human being. Disaster will happen! we will either starve or freez to death.
we need to find a better solution to our problems we are currently facing with!? i do not know of any solution/s but I know of that "Not closing Hormuz" or "attacking Iran" would be a wise idea.
other wise our progress will stop and we go back to the ancient days. That alone is a punishment to the Generation leaving in today's world.

Depends on how long it is closed. Iraq mined the gulf with little success...You think Iran can do it better. I see mines in the strait floating into the Indian Ocean...creating a hazardous situation for years to come but far from dire.

Iran: Peaceful nuclear energy is our right and we will go ahead with it.
U.S: You probably are also trying to develop nuclear weapons just as Saddam was secretly developing weapons of mass destruction.
Israel: If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, so will several other Arab countries and we will be in the middle of a pretty dangerous neighbourhood.
U.S: Iran has got to stop its nuclear ambitions, otherwise we will place sanctions on its oil that will cripple its economy.
Iran: If you do that we will do something similar by closing the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S: If you close the Strait of Hormuz there will be serious consequences.
Iran: I don't know about you guys but a crippled economy is pretty serious to us.
U.S: OK then we will bomb you back to stone age and you know we keep dong that whenever we're not listened to.
Iran: Peaceful nuclear energy is our right and we will go ahead with it.

Sorry KHAWAJA, NOBODY builds nuclear power plants underground, unless they are TRYING TO HIDE WHAT THEY ARE DOING. Iran is enriching weapon's grade plutonium....that is NOT "peaceful nuclear energy" and you do not have a right to it, and you will go ahead with it, and then either Israel or the UN will bomb Iran back into the Stone Age.....

I guess you missed the point. Israel and U.S and other countries are already nuclear in fact they already have nuclear WEAPONS, who and what gave them the right to have them and why are not they made to dispose their weapons before singling out Iran who isn't even saying they are developing any such thing.

Furthermore, saying that they have to hide something by making it underground frankly is pretty lame. Making it underground can have other reasons too such as safety from enemy attacks and environmental safety if any nuclear disaster takes place, the entire facility can simply be flattened underground unlike the catastrophe we recently saw in Japan.

"And the recent assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist, which Tehran claims was the work of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, has further raised tensions to a fever pitch."

Come on, they've also claimed the British MI6 was behind this, as well as the US CIA.

Well if you were them who would you suspect being involved in killing their nuclear scientist. Do you really believe that liar Leon Panneta who bold face lied to American soldiers by telling that the U.S. would never be involved in such activities when he knows full well that the C.I.A.s paramilitary forces due that type of activity all the time throughout the C.I.A.'s history since he was just the head of the C.I.A..
