Dictator puts U.S. in tough spot

By CNN Wire Staff

Embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh will be allowed to come to the United States for medical treatment in New York, a senior Obama administration official said Tuesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged a debate within the administration.

Officials do not want to come across as providing safe haven to a dictator responsible for a violent crackdown on an uprising that killed many protesters, the source said.

The decision was made in hopes that Saleh's departure from Yemen could ease tensions in the country and help pave the way toward elections next year, the official said.

Saleh was wounded in a June bomb attack on his presidential palace.

He received treatment in Saudi Arabia as protests grew against his 33-year rule.

On Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said U.S. officials were considering Saleh's request to come to America "for the sole purpose of seeking medical treatment."

Saleh agreed to step down from power after months of unrest.

Yemen has been wracked with protests throughout the year, with demonstrators and rival factions demanding the president's departure and calling for elections.

In November, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that Saleh had told him he would come to New York for medical treatment after signing an agreement to step down. Under the deal, brokered by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, the president agreed to transfer power into the hands of a coalition government.

While unpopular with many Yemenis, Saleh has been an ally of the United States in its war on terrorism, particularly against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

CNN's Elise Labott and Jill Dougherty contributed to this report.

Wonderful blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I'm hoping to start my own website soon but I'm a little lost on everything.

Would you recommend starting with a free platform
like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many
options out there that I'm completely overwhelmed ..

    Any recommendations? Thanks!

Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending some time to talk about this
    matter here on your blog.

He should not be allowed in the US. Send him to China, Japan, Russia, where ever, but not in the US. After the elections, people are going to say the US rigged the elections by getting his help. Keep him the F@#$ away from here. And we know if the US lets him come here, than there is an agenda behind that as well. Our CIA will definately use him because they don't want a govt that may pose a threat to the Saudis.

If he comes to the US, he'll be out of Yemen and that in itself is good for that country. It could prove to be a good move that benefits the Yemeni people. the agreements have already been signed.

In these spring-arabic days, dictators are always bad news, in particular when they are Islamist. Why not send the man to the Hague. They will welcome him with open arms, especially because he can pay his keep. They will even travel to the U.S. to pick him up for free. The problem of Ali Abdullah Saleh is exacerbated by the fact that Qu'ran favors dictatorship. In the Surat Al-Fath (Victory) it is stated that "Moslems ought to be dictatorial towards the Un-believers." Until this misbegotten precept is amended or wiped out, there will be Moslem dictators in the world! I hate "argumentum ad Hitlerum." But can anyone explain to me, how different is Surat 48-29 from the Hitler's assertion that "only Germans are the Ubermenschen"?

They have these places called Switzerland or Argentina or Peru. Tis where most dictators and geonocidal murders go. If he comes here, get him the crappiest doctors you can find. Graduates of Grenada! A room that faces the hospital's air conditionig unit. Have some construction work going on overhead 24-7 so he can't sleep. Insist he must take 3 suppositories every night at once. Have 3 Barium Enemas with air and 4 Colonoscopies. Take blood every hour and miss the vein 3 times. After all that, and the hospital food; he'll be begging to leave the country.

I am not claiming that Islam, nor Muslims, are perfect seraphic beings. I am merely saying that a man's worth is not measured by his ideology. You think I don't know that there are Islamic extremists, women's rights abuses, unjustified murders and tortures, honor killings, mass human rights violations, etc.? I also know humanity's history of war and strife in the name of theology, in the name of God. Did not the Christians kill masses of Jews and Muslims in the name of God and righteousness in order to claim the Holy Land? Did Christians not burn women at the stake? Or drown them, women charged with sorcery? Did not Protestant "Aryans" commit genocide? Did they not persecute Jews and Romani? No, a man's religion does not deem his character, his actions. Not every Catholic – man, women, and child – is the same person and therefore cannot be condemned for the actions of others within their sect, the same may be said for every religion. So it stands to reason that you cannot condemn every muslim – man, woman, and child – for the perverse actions of those within their sect. Truly, it is illogical to condemn them all. You will never convince me that a person's religion equates to the quality of their character, their morality.

@Robert, tolerance is not complacency. I am not going to tell others that agnosticism is perfect wisdom, thereby implying that everyone else is wrong because of their own personal ideological choices. Perhaps I would take you more seriously if you used proper grammar and punctuation; if you could structure a sentence so that it is coherent. Perhaps then I could comprehend what it is you're trying to say; as is, I cannot comprehend it, I can only conjecture. All I see is you implying that I am a well-meaning, complacent, heretic and am therefore undeserving of my views being taken into account. Heretics have no voices? Is that it? Ha. Don't worry, my dissident sensibilities are not in the least offended, merely amused. Sorry that I don't fall in line with your dogmatic practices – that's sarcasm – I am however, not sorry for my views on the equality of mankind. Nor am I sorry for being tolerant of the variances of human culture. 'As it is written: there is none righteous, no, not one.' – Romans 3:10 'God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.' 1 John 4:16 ^_^ I may be a dissident, but I am not an unenlightened one. Happy Holidays – for all my fellow sectarian dissidents – and Salutations to all the rest.

In 1987 President Saleh received with open arms to many Americans, their families, that we went with Yemen Hunt/ Exxon, we were given all kinds of help to make our families comfortable, we could bring our pets, religious symbols, etc.
Yemeni people were trained to work in the pipeline.
What most do not know is that before Saleh there was no freedom, Yemeni scaped and many came to the USA,they were control with an iron hand ny the last Royal.
He did not want foreign people to go to Yemen and Yemenis could not traveld.
Saleh permited an American School, Sisters from the Order of Mother Theresa were invited to come.
In Yemen there is no idea od country but loyalty to ones tribe.
Saleh opened Universities to women, accepted refugees from Vietnam, because they were famous sea travelers like Omanis and in Vietnam there were descendans.
I hope he is permited to come, he is an enemy of radicals, I hope we do not treat him like we did to the Shah of Iran, that he was dying and was asked to leave the USA.
This is a not a matter of Islam it is is of being gratefull to a man that stood side by side with the USA against terrorists and for that he is being attacked.

Lesson here for Obama..... Don't let him in.

We left a few months from Iran before they atacked the Embassy and it did not have nothing to do with the Shah, is was very difficult to be an American in Iran even during the Shah.
Carter feels at home visiting Dictators from the Left like Morales, Chavez , etc.
To force the Shah to leave when he was terminal was callous.
The Embassy was going to be run over soon or later, the Imans were calling like now for war against the USA.
I think we should show to the world that we are loyal to our friends, to less radicals , to moderate Muslims.

We don't know for sure what these people live with everyday. Maybe he was better than the last leader and at least tried to get rid of terrorists. These people are now seeing that dictators in general are not good and lead to repression. Alot has changed in the last two years. I hope they get freedom and some democracy and that in turn will get rid of terrorism. And yes all groups are guilty in the past of some sort of war, even the muslims (look at India). Things will get better with free elections, and the world refusing to witness crimes against humanity.

Islam doesn't hurt people. People hurt people. Those that have distorted a religion to suit their own purposes, to denigrate others and spread ignorance and hatred – they hurt others. Some of you suggest that we bomb all muslims, that they ought to be killed. Tell me something, do muslim families not fear, do they not hope, do they not laugh and love, do they not pity, and anger? Do they not weep, or bleed? Do they not feel pain and mourn the loss of their loved ones? Do the children not cry when they fall and scrape their knees? Do parents not hope for better lives for their children? Man was created equal. In your fear and ignorance, you would condemn innocents, entire masses, to slaughter. You would have our country, and the men and women who serve to protect our freedoms, take away these peoples' right to live? You would commit genocide? You shame your fellow Americans. You show a flagrant disregard for others, but more than that, you show a flagrant disregard for life. Life is a blessing for all and should not be taken for granted, but you would rob masses of innocents of their lives. Because someone lives in a different culture than yourself, or practices a different religion, does not mean they are any less of a person than yourself, it doesn't mean they are all terrorists. Extremism is that which should be combated, much like we should look to combat neo-nazis at home. The best way to combat ignorance, hatred, and fear, is to educate future generations. 'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in' – Greek Proverb. I am by no means a pacifist, but I do believe that we all should do everything within our power to prevent unnecessary strife. Killing innocents only inspires the hatred of others, making it easier for extremists to prey upon the people. The people of the middle east deserve education, compassion, they deserve for those that are in ignorance of their culture to have patience and learn about their ways – not to condemn them sight unseen.

Agnostic in CO: You really should look into Islam a bit more. Robert Spencers books provide very good information and history to the bloody origin of this cult (since they started abducting christian girls, killing innocent christian business owners and dragging innocent christian women to the streets and raping them.... I refuse to call this a religion).

Islam has nothing to offer the world except human right abuses, genocide, murder, rape, torture and no personal freedom. It would be easy to point fingers are people doing bad things, but in reality they are influenced by their cult of islam from their false prophet that doomed them all to hell for following his bloody and merciless footsteps of conquest and domination.

Oh and just an fyi, Islam stands for "submission" ... not freedom or peace, not for the better of the people, not even for God, it's to submit to a rule that is outside their own Gods belief.

Try reading the Koran. The Bible old and new testament. The are full of arrogant slaughter. The problem with islam is that it is explictly full of violent instructions to its belivers. There are only 3 ways to deal with the people of the world 1.covert permanently to islam and submit to sharia law 2. Be enslaved and dominated by the faithful ( remember it was the muslims who sold the blackman to the whites in the first place ) 3. Be exterminated as infidels. There are only 2 worlds according to islamist beliefs the world of islam and the world of war. This is what happens to countries that get thier wealth out of the ground without really having to work. They spend their time having "guest" workers ( slaves ) pump the money out of holes in the ground andreading about 1000yr old fantasies of the good old days.

ALL RELIGIONS HAVE THEIR HANDS BLOODIED. I think that any "fundamentalist" whether christian, islamic, buddhist, or hindu have been inordinately responsible for killing people since the dawn of time. It's always somebody forcing their views on somebody else, knows what's good for other people that is the crux of the problem. I guess utopianism is fantasy but maybe as time goes into the future and the world gets crowded, maybe people will become more civilized and "accountable" for their actions. BTW, what about Armenia in 1915, the Ottoman Turks killed over a million Armenian civilians and they STILL WON'T ADMIT IT TO THIS DAY......

If he surrenders unconditionally; admits his crimes; and agrees to serve 20 years, then by all means let him come here and get great medical attention in one of our federal prisons. Otherwise, he'll have to go to Mexico and sneak across the border with the other 30 million illegals. Or, last resort, he can ask President Obama, and of he becomes a Democrat, Obama will let him in

Although I do not like the message from realitycheck, I have to reluctantly agree with the swede. Historical facts are what they are and we cannot hide from them. We must accept the past and look to the future. The republican party needs a major reality check if it expects future support from educated people.

Sonic – as I said earlier, Hitler was simply implementing european catholic beliefs held for 700 years. If what you say is true about "true christians", then no white christian today is a "true christian". Likewise, the same argument could be applied to say that muslims inflicting violence are not "true muslims". My opinion -both religions breed primal hatred – despite their religious teachings. So neither one can claim moral victory. Sorry, but you can't have your cake and eat it too 🙂

What would exactly be answer to why be treated in USA Ali? Tom – was Hitler a Turkish Muslim? You Wish LOL!! Bad news – he was a german christian. Here is a sad reality – the nazis implemented what the vatican and European christianity had believed for 700 years – that the jews were christ killers. The final solution had been discussed several times. The Nazis simply made the european christian vision a reality. There are many facts and papers supporting this. Also, sorry to ruin your day but the Belgian atrocities in the Congo have been well documented. Time to stop watching Fox News and get a real education 🙂

Bravo, check. Also, the reason Hitler was NOT allowed to enlist in the Austrian army in 1914 is he could NOT prove one of his Grandmothers was NOT Jewish. The German army had no restriction, so that was the one he joined. Many of the high ranking Nazi Politicians could not disprove their Jewish grannies, either. That is why some folks have theorized that the "Final Solution" was a matter of self-hatred and to eliminate any "non-Aryan" traces in their family trees.

Xiaolong – if you count numbers of soldiers and victims dead by invasions and war in the last 200 years, here are some historical facts – Congo – 8million africans (by belgians), 6 million jews by germans, 25 million russians, 15 million european soldiers, millions in vietnam, laos and cambodia (by americans and french), half a million Libiyans by italians, several million south american indians by Spanish, millions of south african black by white Christians etc. etc. None of the killers were muslim. Believe me that I am no fan of Islam or dictators, but I think that those proclaiming Christian virtues should realize the amount of blood on their hands.

The Iranians don't hate Americans for letting the Shah in for cancer treatment. They hate you because they had been very fond of the USA for its supposed protection of democratic values, and in return, the USA and Britain overthrew the Iranian democracy, and installed the Shah into power. His brutal regime precipitated the rise of the Islamic Revolution, and gave political credibility and therefore power to that fascist regime when it overthrew te Shah, who was a puppet of the US and Britain. The existence of the fascist Islamic regime in Iran today is directly as a consequence of Western Gunboat Mercantilism, a policy still pursued today, and not capitalism as many so simplistically suppose.

(CNN) Islam is dictatorship. (facist) Caliphat. The west isn't causing dictatorship, we don't believe in Islam. Our culture is based on Judaism/Christinity/Modern Humanism (also a product or vision of one who was raised Christian) and old Greek philosophical norms and values. Islam is something else. It's a political system that causes dictators. The west might believe we can change that. That's what muslims call crusades. When we want to do business or .. the middle east wants to do business, muslims call it supporting dictators. For short muslims blaming the west for having interests, because they might want freedom, they don't believe in it. Believe – action – result. The result of Islam isn't freedom.

Islam is a system that causes dictatorship. That's why Turkey with their demography has problems with democracy for over 100 years now. I wouldn't treat that Ali Abdullah Saleh in the USA, unless he's willing to find (buy) some doctors that would treat him there. When the west does business with the Middle East we're getting accused of doing business with dictators, while it's their dictator system Islam that causes it. When we wouldn't use oil, the dictators would still be around in the Middle East, but the west wouldn't support them. When you want to do business with the ME you do business with dictators.
