Panetta urges Israel to get back to the peace table

From CNN National Security Producer Jennifer Rizzo

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged Israel to get to the "damn table" in peace talks with the Palestinians, an unusually blunt comment for a Secretary of Defense that inserts Panetta into the Middle East peace process.

In remarks at a Brookings Institution conference, a Washington DC think tank, Panetta called on Israel to again start negotiations with the Palestinians. “Just get to the damn table. Just get to the table,” Panetta said. “The problem right now is we can’t get them to the damn table to at least sit down and begin to discuss their differences.”

Panetta also charged that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated from the region. It’s not enough he said for Israel to rely on a strong military for security, diplomacy is also needed.

“Unfortunately, over the past year, we have seen Israel’s isolation from its traditional security partners in the region grow, and the pursuit of a comprehensive Middle East peace has effectively been put on hold,” Panetta said.

As examples Panetta said Israel could “reach out and mend fences” with countries like Turkey, Egypt and Jordan, countries that Panetta said share an interest in stability in the Middle East.

“If gestures are rebuked, the world will see those rebukes for what they are. That is exactly why Israel should pursue them,” Panetta said.

Panetta placed a special emphasis on Israel improving its relationship with Turkey, saying he has voiced this message in Jerusalem in the past and plans on voicing it again when he travels to Ankara, the Turkish capital, later this month.

Panetta did stress that Israel will “always have the unshakeable backing of the United States."

Next year the U.S. military and the Israeli Defense Forces will be conducting the largest ever joint exercises between the two countries.   Ballistic missile and rocket defense capabilities will be tested.

Hi there! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I'm getting tired of WordPress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

Muslim political parties are taking control over the "Arab Spring" which eventually is going to be worse for Israel than the former autocratic regimes. Basic Islamic doctrine and teachings promotes hatred, violence, discrimination specifically against Jews. In addition, Islam is highly intolerant and irrational which makes any dialog with it, futile and a waste of time. Muslim's second commandment is an "Eye For An Eye" which is the most pragmatic way Israel "negotiates" with Muslims in order to reach an understanding.

Read history, there have been many times Israel responded, gave back land they won during war after THEY were attacked.Arafat made a peace deal with them , then took it back after pressure from Hamas. The problem in the world is terrorist organizations backed up like countries like Iran and Syria who are even messing in Arab Spring countries and were told to get out. They were told to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq too, when the people of that nation have caught them there interfering. IRAN does not get blamed enough by the world. Muslims and Jews can make ammends of such factions stay out of their business. Muslism need to recognize that these factions who kill Christians and Jews, Bahai, Hindu and other are making a bad name for Islam in the world. They call other people infidels. Arrogance is forbidden in Islam but what do you call attacking others and then complaining when they try to defend themselves? And saying there is only one true faith? Muslims need to be welcoming to others and show a better side to their faith, and they can do that by making ammends with Israel, showing tolerance and dialogue..leading the way. Israel needs to reciprocate or begin the talks. This way the world can start respecting both religions, when the violence stops from radicals, and when the dialogue kicks in between them.

Good luck with that one Mohammad. If Islamic nations form together and attack Israel, Israel if they have to will be dropping Neuclear bombs on each attacking nation.

The ancient hatred of Islam against Israel will never stop. Any Arab nation who would dare attack Israel would be suicidal.

as usual everyone is a liar but you, the credo of the Palestinian apologist: "Woe is me, everyone lies but us. we are innocent victims who for the past 70 years have been kept in refugee camps instead of finding jobs because the West, the Zionists, the US, he hindus, AIPAC, etc. wont let us succeed. It Is everyone's fault but our own. We teach our children that Jews are only good for killing and we strap bombs to their chests because we are forced to do it by the infidels" . Your script needs revising in the same way your history books are already revisionist.

God bless all the people in Israel and Palestine with a peace that lasts. If the kind of money that is spent on weapons on both sides could be spent on building desalination plants and reforestation the desert could bloom again. The real problem is basic human hatred, and fear. It will take a miracle for this to happen, but if it did the tourism, economic growth, and future prospects of a united country are hard to imagine. I challenge all of you to dream this dream. A wealthy stable country at the site of this land bridge would be the first step toward opening Africa to a new future as well.

the walls would not exist but for the bombs brought into Israel by Palestinians to blow up buses and schools . palestinians who are propagandized from birth by the same skewed information you are providing in your posts. You appear to be trying to be a good person but if you saw the textbooks that the palestinians provide their children, the hatred that is spewed on their palestinian produced TV you would understand the plight of the Israelis. History shows who the aggressors are and propaganda will not change the reality. As Golda Meir said: when the arabs love their children more than they hate jews than there will be peace. it is important that people such as yourself become familiar wioth both sides of the story and not just accept the victim version that the palestinians have propagated for the past 70 years

What about the Likud parties platform that says that Palestine can only exist east of the Jordan river. How is that any different except that it is a little more diplomatic? Rick have you any idea of the facts on the ground right now? Isreal controls everything in the west bank and they are digesting it for permanent control. The wall was made to surround, separate and destroy the West Bank. It follows the water sources and gives Israel walls around all of the population centers so that Arab owners of land cannot keep title because they cannot keep up the land they own. Israel has the most racist laws regarding citizen of any country since South Africa has become reformed. It is also notable that the wall has been built so that the Israel side looks ten feet high while the Palestinian side is 30 feet high. The Israeli's have no intention to return one inch of the West Bank. America is only really saying anything because Israel is making it's intentions to clear to ignore even in the United Nations. An institution that was founded to protect political fictions for the five most powerful nations in the world.

Funny how this sleaze joke of SecDef wants to emphasize diplomacy when there's an excellent chance the US will suffer serious losses and all oil exports from the region will be halted because there will be nothing the US can do about it. But if it's some dumpy little place with no chance of serious retaliation, then it's shock and awe all the way. America should be ashamed.

Ray, you are completely wrong, besides defending themselves against Muslims radicals(not all Palestinian are this way, some of them try to solve problems between the countries with Jews from Israel), its rather obvious if you look around the world, WHAT is the worlds BIGGEST problem-radical Islam. But they are very good at propaganda, blaming the west or Israel or who ever. There are very good Muslims in the world, but if it were a Christian issue(the radical Christian family in Florida for instance), CHRISTIANS would take care of those radicals. Ive seen the radical Christian family at many events and people despise them and protect those that they attack-even motorcyclists have a group where they drive to the place where these radicals target and surround and protect the people they preach on.Muslims need to bring their cleric to the light and the entire Muslim population needs to eliminate the radicals or reverse the brainwashing that cause them to attack and kill ther faiths and countries. This is not a question of race - for both Hindus and Pakistanis, who shared the same country until the middle of last century, were racially similar. However there has never been an attempt by Hindu immigrants to establish a Hindu worldview as the sole approach to life in Australia. Islam, on the contrary, has the aim of fighting [this is the meaning of 'jihad'] from without or within a society to establish Islamic Shariah law there. They are trying to inject their faith everywhere in the world, and it appears to many that now they are using new methods to wiggle it through and try to force Islamic law abroad. They will use it in their government, thats their choice, but we dont want it in ours, and people like Anjem Choudary are trying to force it on Europe and other countries of the world.Muslims need to open a new chapter of Islam, one which is truly peaceful, not the old way where the Ottoman forced its beliefs on others.God is kind and loving, not hateful. Google what countries in the world radical Muslims are attacking on other faiths, EVEN in CHINA.

i dont know where you got your out of context quote but Israel didnt hide the fact that it and egypt had a legal and active blockade and the investigation of the incident resulted in a finding that the flotilla employed armed resistance to which the Israeli commandoes responded in kind. Once again, the Palestinan sympathizers are spewing the nonsense that "it isnt our fault we got hurt or killed. Its their fault." Arent you ashamed to be such a whiner .If you don't want to get hurt, dont try to run the blockade.

IApartheid Israel's blockade of food and humanitarian supplies into Gaza was not legal. So unless you can explain how hummus, pasta, tomato paste, cornflakes, cakes, biscuits, shampoo, toilet paper and feminine napkins could be used for weapons, the blockade had nothing to do with security and was clearly done as a cruel Naziesque form collective punishment, which is, of course, a crime under international law.

      • maryam

Well JD think about it, can you REALLY trust SOME of them these days? I would be paranoid too. And if they didnt have hate in their hearts and would stop their attacks they could have had peace a long time ago. They have had opportunities but now Israel is also backing off from solution because how many times can you try with someone? Israel has tried. Im for both sides, Im for peace, but if you look at the entire world, who is causing more problems in more countries, radical Muslims or Jews? Do Jews want to make the world a caliphate, no, SOME radical Muslims do, and there are plenty.Caliphate=making all Islamic...I respect good Muslims who act like the rest of us who try to be kind and respectful of all religions, but you dont see that from many in some countries. We will see about these Arab Springs–they are implementing Islam, possibly sharia. If they want respect, they will have to prove that if a Muslim kills a Christian or Jew, that they will get the same punishment as everyone else. God loves everyone, he created us all, and when we die, he isnt going to judge us by what religion or no religion we are, he will judge us by our good actions on earth. Therefore radicals of any kind, who hurt others, need to seek forgiveness and try to make up for their hateful sins in order to be forgiven and saved for Paradise.

Israel, a predatory and aggressive country that has consistently launched wars on all its neighbours since its establishment, expelled hundreds of thousands of people, created millions of Palestinian, Lebanese, and Egyptian refugees, murdered tens of thousands of civilians and used internationally-banned weapons (from napalm to phosphorous bombs, to name the most notorious cases), continues to occupy the Palestinian territories and the Palestinian people in violation of international law, is governed by a foundational anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racist state ideology to which all its leaders, governing structures, and institutions adhere, as does its popular and political culture and a variety of its laws. Indeed, Israel not only consistently launches wars against its neighbours but also urges world powers to invade these neighbours as well, and in the meanwhile sponsors anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racist campaigns of hatred in the United States and across Europe in addition to integrating such racism in its school and university curricula and much of its cultural production.

Your lack of credibiliy would be appalling if it weren't so amusing. By the way, If he Palestinians didnt foment so much hatred in their school books so that their children didnt grow up with so much hated of their Israeli neighbors to the extent that they would be willing to blow up Israeli school buses maybe there would be a chance for peace eventually.

You are absolutely correct John. Israel has been the cause of problems in the ME since its founding terrorists such as Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir and David Ben Gurion began their terrorist attacks upon the Mandatory Government of Palestine. The native people of Palestine did not invade and attack Europe's Zionist Jews; Europe's Zionist Jews invaded Palestine and attacked both the Mandatory Government of Palestine and the native Palestinians with the intent ethnic cleansing since day one and have continued their immoral and illegal campaign ever since. .

I'm glad to see that others do see the truth above all the Zionist myths and lies that Israeli revisionist historians and propagandists have spread over the years.

I know you sound crazy to most Americans. The fact that there were Jewish Terrorists who bombed the largest hotel in Jerusalem before the partition of palestine is completely unknown in America. The support of Arab countries for Nazi rhetoric towards Jewish immigrants to Palestine is also forgotten. There has been so much horror on both sides, but America only hears about the Palestinian atrocities. Neither sides hands are clean. So there is so much room for Political hacks to claim that this is a Lie and that is a lie. Both jewish settlers and palestinians were afraid of being attacked by the opposing Army. Very few people on either side stayed with property that they owned if it was on the wrong side of the original partition line. The government before the English protectorate was the Ottoman Empire. Literally, land deeds were issued by a government that had been around for centuries. The Israelis have gone so far as to sink an American ship to keep their operations during the 6 weeks war secret. Pick your side and start up your propaganda machine and you can warp the uninformed persons views in minutes. At the bottom this is a struggle for land and scarce resources. Both sides want safety, economic security, and power. The only way their leaders can imagine getting this is by destroying the other side. The worst part is that this lack of vision masks a truth. The wealth of a shared country would dwarf the current situation. America needs to review its strategic interests in the area and quit pretending that the situation is going to get better if we follow the course we are on. Israel needs no more arms from our companies. Israel needs a real commitment that includes an unwillingness to pretend that we are not headed in a bad direction with the current policies. When the last of the West Bank has been digested by Israel there will still be a Palestinan diaspora just like the jewish diaspora that went before it. The Palestinan people will come back to fight Israel again no matter what it takes. The only real way forward is Peace.

Agree with Dennis. And also with Rick re 1967 borders. If they werent attacked that land wouldnt have been confiscated and won. They offered to give it back as well. They offered peace treaty and Arafat was willing and changed his mind. My issue for some Muslims is that they are reluctant to see both sides of the issue. The past os over, lets change our paths and try to find peace. The world is tired of the fuss. I blame both sides now, but in the past I do believe the Palestinian had the chance for peace. Israel has to losten to rogue governments like Syria, Iran and others threaten them, so of course their feelings have changed, and of course they feel like they have to find other ways to protect themselves. It appears to be more aggression from radical Muslim ARAB populations and Egypt in the past. There are a lot of lies and propaganda being spewed, and they use religion as their basis to bring gullible Muslims to their side. If they cant achieve peace, maybe they both should be relocated and make both countries an international arena for all religions of the world.Because we all want to see peace, and if radicals keep preventing this peace, then the world cannot respect their brand of Islam, nor will God.

This is the most honest pro Israel post on this site. Perhaps if others could be this honest we could really get down to the point of solving this. It was Begin who was able to get the first peace accord signed and he started out as a Terrorist. Maybe if Israel could reach the point that it really knew in its heart of hearts that God does not intend for the future of the jewish race to be tied just to this small plot of land. He has bigger plans then this. No matter how strong Israel is there will never be peace on the current terms. Especially if you remember that this is a family fight. Both sides have always taken a long view and are not going anywhere any time soon. Stubbornness and ties to land are traits that both sides are never going to lose. So either it is straight genocide or compromise. So which is going to be?

Westbank belongs to Israel, there is no land stealing. There no such thing as illegal settlement once Israeli permit is given.

Zionist mythology aside.... the occupied Palestinians West Bank is not part of Apartheid Israel according to the UN, the ICJ at The Hague, every country on the planet or even Apartheid Israel's own Supreme Court, so Apartheid Israel cannot legitimize settlements built outside of its internationally recognized pre-1967 border that were built in violation of international law.

When Israel was attacked by Jordan and Syria, they took that land, but offered to give it back.6YOU have to admit that the most aggressive people on this earth are radical Islamists destroying Islams name by attacking countries and other religions and other Muslims. That land where Palestinians lived was divided, Israel took that division and was happy with it, but after attacked they gained ground, offering to give it back. Why should Israel have to accomodate people who are attacking them? What kind of mother will offer up their son to kill another ?Religion shouldnt teach hatred and sacrifice , they instead should teach children to learn to dialogue and solve problems peacefully. That will win you more results in heaven and on earth. They are not occupying–if Palestinian stop those from being antagonists on their side, Israel wouldnt be on that land. They tried to strike a peace deal many times. Just because some people are Muslim doesnt mean you should defend them if they are wrong. Those doing suicides and rockets are antagonizing to provoke a fight to make Israel look Palstinian should stop the ones doing that, because those doing that are causing problems for the world.

What about the plight of women, gays and other ethnic, religous and ethnic minorities in the arab countries? Do we forsake the well being of the innocent to win some global popularity contest? Israel is despised bythe islamo-facists because it is a secular democracy that recognizes and protects the rights of all. Israel is more like the Berkley campus, it's neighbors are more like an English soccer riot.

It does not respect legal citizenship rights for children born to parents who are jewish and arab. You can't vote or have an Israeli passport if one of your parents is palestinian. What more needs to be said. Some pigs are more equal than others in Israel (this is an animal farm reference not an attempt to be racist). Water rights are so unequal that Israel has made Hydrology information a state secret. I am not an Anti Semite. I just don't believe how much evil the state of Israel is willing to commit in the name of Zionism. I have visited Israel, listened to lectures from an Israeli diplomat, and come away wondering how it can get worse. The diplomat gave a speech to a group of students from Georgia and claimed that the only thing we needed to understand the history of Israel is an analogy with the Old West here in America. The Israeli's are the cowboys and the Palestinians are the indians. Of course, this brings to mind the number of Treaties broken by the US government with the Indian Nations and the genocide that was the trail of tears. When we asked him to clarify his analogy he had a small problem on his hands. When I visited Israel there was no wall around Bethlehem and no suicide bombers. Camp David had just been signed and hope was in the air for a real peaceful solution. A radicle zionist killed the only other Israeli leader who has attempted to create peace with the Palestinians. Maybe the rest of them have taken a hint. If so how can you call Israel a Democracy?

How many Muslims kill other faiths? Hamas Kill Fatah?People around the world are fearing Islamic radicals and their hatred, and the radicals are forcing Muslims to question their faith and leave it. Im sure they will kill them for it and then blame it on the west and Israel. You SHOULD be able to leave a religion withourt repercussion, thats barbaric. Allah is kind and would not approve.

How about the US ending its support for the Racist Terror state it established in 1947? The theft of land, the betrayal of the ppl, and the continuing horror of the zionist occupation has destroyed US ties with the rest of the MIddle East, cost untold billions in treasure, and more blood than should EVER have been shed!
Support our troops, dump the zionists!

The US didnt establish any state in 1947> IN 1948, The UN recognized the State of Israel on land that up to that time that had been under control of Britain and immediately, this fledgling state was attacked by all its arab neighbors with the intent of driving the jewish inhabitants into the sea. The arabs lost and have never gotten over it.

Actually the Apartheid Israel was not attacked by neighboring states in 1948, neighboring Arab states took action to prevent Apartheid Israel from seizing land beyond the borders as part of what it called Plan Dalet, which outlined the used of roaming bands of Zionist terrorist to forcibly ethnically cleanse native Palestinians from land well beyond the borders intended by UNGAR 181 or declared by Apartheid Israel's founding terrorists. Arab states merely entered the areas intended to be the Arab partition to protect the native people ane were attacked by Zionist Terrorist groups trying to illegally occupy land beyond Apartheid Israel's border..... Sounds familiar huh?

your version of world history is unique in its lack of facts. You are the first person i have ever come across that denies that the arab states atacked Israel in 1948 after telling arab residents in the areas attacked to leave to avoid being mistaken for Jews that were going to be massacred. I assume you will also deny that the arabs that didnt leave were offerred citizenship by Israel. As such, the use of the inflammatory term "apartheid" is clearly not factual. A lie doesnt become truth because you post it on a website. Are you writing your posts from Ramallah? do you contribute to the palestinian schoolbooks that blame all the palestinian failings on the jews? Did you participate in the killing of the Jewish athletes in Munich or are you just an unrepentant Nazi? By the way, your credibility, already less than most muslim posters suffers even more when you substitute inflammatory dialogue. e.g. "apartheid" for substance.

The problem with Mid East peace talks stems from the 'Oslo Accorda' otherwise known as the "Quisling Accords'. Everyone was betrayed, the Israelis by reversing long held policy of dealing with a terrorist and Palestine because Yaser Arrafat would only put on the table what Israel would agree to in order to be recognized. The Israelis can still hold onto Palestinian tax money and that should have been amended at the Accords. A new treaty to replace the old is needed. Maybe the parties can do it without outside interference which only gets them "Quisling Accords."

I completely agree with Rick. Why on earth should Israel continue talking with nations who want nothing more than to eradicate them! Now we, their closest ally, are throwing them to the wolves. Israel is not the aggressor!

how about some peace overtures from turkey, jordan, etc. why always a one way street. Israel stops construction of settlements for 10 months and what did it get them? rockets, flotillas and threats of extinction. where are the peace lovers on the other side of this "table"? is there any desire for peace in the palestinian camp?

in fact Israel stopped building for 10 months, unilaterally, at request of US, for no money, and in thanks received rocket attacks and vilification from people like you who make up their facts as they go along.

TRUE, bit some people refuse to admit the facts, because they will defend radical Muslims even if they are wrong. If this isnt true we would hear more of them coming out in truth and seeing the other side too. I hope to see Muslims speak out and make better changes so the world sees them in a better light. Good Muslims deserve that. Palestinian and Israeli people try to have talks themselves, so if radical factions stay out if it, perhaps they can resolve it.

Apartheid Israel needs to halt construction in its illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank period, not just for a few months. The occupied Palestinian West Bank is NOT part of Apartheid Israel, so if you folks want to build homes, do so within Apartheid Israel's internationally recognized pre-1967 border where they belong.

If you Zionists could just resist the temptation to steal other peoples land and stop tying to starve people to death for holding democratic elections, you'd find that the native people of Palestine would not hate you so much

I believe the borders changed in 1967 because the arabs once again attacked Israel and once again lost . the Palestinians are the only people that think war requires a "do over" and they should not suffer any consequences for losing. stop attacking Israel and stop losing, and maybe Israel will give you the west bank. once egypt made peace with Israel, they got the Sinai back. However,The palestinians still call for the eradication of Israel. Do you honestly think they are as dumb as you?

Thse settlements would NEVER have existed had Palestine accepted the peace initiatives handed to them MORE THAN ONCE. Quit blaming Israel, back then they TRIED on many occasions. I was upset about the settlements as well while negotiations were trying to be held...however, at the same time, this could have been resolved LONG ago, had Iran, Syria and others stayed out of it.
