U.S. to join U.K. in new Iran sanctions

By Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jill Dougherty

The United States will name Iran, as well as its Central Bank, as a “primary money laundering concern,” on Monday but not place sanctions directly on the central bank, a senior Treasury Department official tells CNN.

The U.S. will also sanction a number of Iranian companies allegedly supporting Iran’s nuclear program, the senior Treasury Department official said.

The announcement comes on the same day Britain cut all financial ties with Iran over concerns about Iran's nuclear program, the first time it has ever cut an entire country's banking sector off from British finance, the British Treasury announced.  Canada also announced new sanctions.

The Treasury Department released a statement saying that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be make remarks at 430p ET Monday to "outline new steps the United States is taking to increase pressure on Iran."

The actions come in response to a recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) which expressed serious concern over what it said was Iran’s continuing work on its nuclear program.

Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak told CNN's Fareed Zakaria that Iran is probably less than a year away from being at a point that it will be too late to stop its nuclear program.

"It's true that it wouldn't take three years, probably three quarters, before no one can do anything practically about it because the Iranians are gradually, deliberately entering into what I call a zone of immunity, by widening the – the redundancy of their plan, making it spread over many more sides," Barak said on Fareed Zakaria GPS.

U.S. has been considering action against the Central Bank of Iran but officials became concerned that a full sanction could have a negative effect on the world economy because of the potential impact on oil prices.

This weekend, Elise Labott reported the US will impose fresh sanctions against Iran’s petrochemical industry, citing diplomatic sources.

A number of congressional members have been calling for sanctions against the central bank amidst questions about how much the current spate of sanctions are actually working.

If you think that Iran is going to actually use nukes, then you all need to wake-up. Stop drinking the media fed Koolaid!! It may surpirse you (or not)....that there is a very good chance they already have them.....maybe they didn't make them, but they have them. Either way, if they fire, there are so many nuclear war-heads aimed at their major cities that the entire country will be wiped off the map with minutes.....there is no logic in them using them now or EVER.

If the US would mind its own business, as I and President George Washington both recommended in the infancy of this once great republic, I doubt that Iran or any other country would be considered an existential threat to the US that many today claim.

Way to build a straw man and ignore the fact that the founding fathers were against the very foreign policy you support. Instead of dealing with consequences of an interventionist foreign policy don't you think it would be prudent to look at the root causes of hostilities against us? Your vitriol adds nothing to the discussion and undermines your credibility.

Instead of attacking me why don't you use facts, logic and reason to try and persuade me why the advice of our founding fathers no longer applies and why we must support action against yet another country.

Hillary and Obama messed up big time. They refuse to talk about it.. About 30 CIA were busted in Iran the other day. They are probably dead by now because Iran executes spies...
The CIA agents were trying to escape. They made it to the ocean but thanks to Obama sending troops home.. The Submarines that were supposed to be on stand by for this type of rescue were not there. Hillary and Obama assured the CIA team that the rescue people are in place. They lied to the CIA agents. This is what they do not want you to know. One of the CIA agents called Hillary from his Satellite phone pleading for help and inquiring why is Hillary and Obama not helping... Hillary just quietly hung up the phone like it was no big deal. There was a Naval ship in the region that could have helped but Hillary claims she did not want military intervention.
Allowing your people to die instead of rescuing them is a No No.. The American people are smart.. If Obama authorized the U.S. Naval ship to rescue the CIA agents the American people would have understood that you were just trying to save lives. But no Hillary told Obama no rescue... and then she walked away.
Hillary and Obama need to resign because of incompetence, inept and for being UN-American.
How could you just hang up the phone when someone is begging you to save their life? That is Cold Blooded.
You will never hear this story from Obama or Hillary because they want to look good in the public eye.

Shouldn't we be asking ourselves why our relations with Iran are so strained when they have friendly and peaceful relations with some of our other trading partners? Is war really the only option? Think about the costs in lives and money. Think about the further destabilization of the mid east that would result from it. Think about the fact that Iran is in compliance with IAEA regulations and that it's only speculation that they may be developing a weapon. And mere speculation has riled the public into such a frenzy that people are shouting for preemptive war based on little evidence yet again. I guess war is okay for many as long as someone else does the fighting for them and it doesn't come to their shores.

War should be the last option and under the law of our land must be declared by the Congress, not unilaterally by the executive branch. And as my protege James Madison once said about war:

Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. . . . [There is also an] inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and . . . degeneracy of manners and of morals. . . . No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare. . . .

Top 10 Reasons some people and politicians in the USA want to waste Iran:

    1) You're justa itchin for another war. hell yeah!!
    2) USA is Israel's beooooootch!
    3) Oil baby, oil (for raw, physical possesion of it)
    4) Iran started the Oil Bourse to sell oil in other currencies
    5) Might be a good distraction to the mindless sheeple of your country away from the collapsed economy, which is worse than europe
    6) Put more bases in the Middle East!
    7) Make other countries afraid of you!
    8) Get to test new weaponry!
    9) Good excuse to keep the "War on Terror" alive and well after all the terrorist bombings start up at home after you attack them
    10) No more assasination attempts by the Iranian government on Saudi ambassador's using mexican drug cartel members!

Ok, so the last 4 or so things in my list were there more to simply complete the list but they are probably all valid!!! USA, give it up already! Stop being the wold's un-requested policeman! Someone will put you in your place sooner or later (hint, Russia, China.....)

The American economy control its inflation because there is a demand in the world to buy oil, which is only sold in US Dollars through the NY Exchange or London exchange. If Someone starts selling oil in other currencies will affect the demand for US dollars and generate inflation in the US. Sadam Hussein traded in Euros and was attcked. Iran is doing the same. They created an oil bourse to sell oil in other currencies and generate an excess supply of Dollars. This is all about Oil. The nuclear issue, true or not , is nothing comparing to the attack to the Dollar. The pen is more powerful than weapons.

The actual truth is no one knows for sure if Iran is building a nuclear weapon, but the fact that they not only now have the ability to and would indeed use it, is the scare. Iran can not be trusted and could easily be far into the making of a nuclear weapon. Many believe Iran is building a Nuclear weapon and they are much closer to success than we had originally thought! I think the time for NATO to support Isreal in an air-bombardment of Iran's Nuclear facilities. The US however must add two more carrier strike groups to the Persian Gulf. The world can not afford to sit back and wait this out any longer. Sanctions do nothing, and Iran should be first removed from the U.N. Iran is laughing at this and laughing all the way to their underground basements. They will show the world their capabilities if we don't act now. North Korea will continue to assist Iran and I truly believe will sell Iran or lease out one their ICBM's when the time comes. Bomb Iran and risk starting WWIII or don't and let Iran start WWIII on their own. I would choose to strike now ask questions later. Or option C Iranians start their own uprise and oust the Iranian Government, which would prove difficult.

With all due respect Mr. President I would like to play devil's advocate. Let us use President Truman's logic. The use of nuclear weaponry will save countless lives at the expense of a few hundred thousand. The use of nuclearweaponry will put an end to a long standing and murderous conflict and usher in an era of peace and prosperity. If Iranian leadership were to come to believe these conditions existed the use of nuclear weapons would almost certainly be justified in their eyes. I won't even cloud the debate with the Iranian willingness to wage proxy wars. I do not however advance the arguement that the U.S. should take military action. That would make the Iranian leadership feel at least one of these conditions has been met.

        November 21, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
      • Thomas Jefferson

I don't believe Truman's logic applies to this situation. when truman was president we were the only nation possessing a weapon. There was no threat of mutually assure destruction. If Iran ever decided to use one the retaliation would be swift and severe as they are surrounded by thousands of weapons. They know this. It is the reason they would do nothing, just as the soviets did nothing and just as north korea does nothing.

I don't believe the US can afford another war. And I don't believe that iran is the threat many would have us believe. Our own CIA said as recently as 06 that they are not pursuing a weapon and the IAEA is only speculating that they might be trying to obtain one. I think we should learn from the conflict with iraq. How many people believed that they had wmd's and that we had to intervene?

Israel gets a free pass because they were NEVER A MEMBER OF THE NPT.

Get it? Try and get it through your jew blaming skull, Israel, Pakistan, and India, all can have nukes, and no one can tell them otherwise, because they were never members of the NPT.

The fact that you jew haters are only bothered by Israel having nukes gives away your hate.

Israel also has been attacked multiple times, by enemies who are attempting to genocide the jewish people. Israel has not stated they wish to destroy anyone, they wish to live in peace. Iran has attacked numerous places in the world through its proxy terror network Hezbollah, they promise to destroy other nations in the world community, and they ARE a signatory to the NPT yet they do not comply with it.

Big differences, which are obvious to someone who is not obsessed with Israel / Jews.

All this talk about Iran's nukes is just that, talk. Nevermind that in 2009 the IAEA and all 16 US intelligence agencies were in unanimous agreement that Iran is only enriching uranium for power plants and nuclear medicine. The source of the blather is really Kish Island, where Iran has successfully established the world's only oil commodities exchange that does not use the US Dollar. You see, there's only two other places i=on the planet where you can sell oil - New York and London - and in both places the US Dollar is the default currency for the oil trade. Iran gave the world another option, and this is what has the power brokers in the US and UK in a tizzy. Since using currency as a reason for going after Iran wouldn't get anybody's support, they figure they could use nuclear ambiguity to frighten uninformed masses, pretty much the same way they played on the fear of the big-military conservatives in order to rally support for invading Iraq.

Of course I do not want them in possession of a weapon but the fact remains that they are in compliance with international law and are allowed to develop uranium for energy purposes. So is it worth going to war with another country at a time when the US economy is in shambles when their is little evidence that they are even developing a bomb? North Korea has one. Am i supposed to believe that their leader is more stable than Iran's? The soviets had thousands of them pointed at us yet nothing happened because they knew what the consequences would be. a little history to the ill informed (you). In over 100 years Iran has attacked no one. NO ONE. They have been invaded and attacked on numerous occasion. During WWI, they were invaded by Britain. In WWII they were invaded again by Britain and the Soviets. After the British installed Mossadegh, he privatized the country's oil and BP (British Petroleum) was created. Immeidately thereafter the US through a CIA backed coup overthrew Mossadegh and installed the puppet regime of the Shah of Iran. He tortured and killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians under the guidance of the US through the Savak Secret service, who were well known for their expertise in torture. When the 1979 Revolution occurred, the Shah ran off to the US where he died at Cancer at Sloan Memorial Kettering hospital. Immediately thereafter, with the help of the British and the USA and Israel, Saddam Hussein was supplied with Gas and chemical weapons and killed hundreds of thousands more Iranians over an 8 year period. Maybe if you weren't so brainwashed by the Zionist owned media in the USA, you might have a clue. If I were pointing a nuclear waepon at you, like Israel is pointing at Iran, what would you do? Why is it alright for the Israeli's or for that matter, any country, to have a nuclear weapon and not Iraq. I agree they shouldn't have oone, but I don't think anyone should. If a country wants a nuclear power plant to make electricty, it should be carefully monitored (including ours) so we don't see another Fulushima por Chernobyl happen. There's your history lesson. I'll send you the bill. PS. You're a dick.

International law requires Iran to full disclosure and transparency which is something Iran is excellent at avoiding. That's how this whole mess started. Iran is concealing its program and now we're calling their bluff.

Provide proof please. Under international law, new facilities must be reported 6 months before they become operational. Iran was not in violation of that. The west simply made it seem like a secret facility even though it was still under construction and would take years to become operational.

Iran expected to face new sanctions from Canada, U.S. and Great Britain !Great! We can't allow any country in the Middle East to have nuclear weapons. That area is too volatile. Next will be Israel, a country that has more than 300 nuclear weapons.
Although no official statistics exist, it has been estimated that Israel possesses 75-400 nuclear weapons, including thermonuclear weapons in the megaton range. Delivery mechanisms include Jericho intercontinental ballistic missiles, with a range of 11,500 km.[ Additionally, Israel is believed to have an offshore nuclear second-strike capability, using submarine launched nuclear-capable cruise missiles. The Israeli government maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity on whether it has nuclear weapons, saying only that it would not be the first to "introduce nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Former International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed ElBaradei regarded Israel as a state possessing nuclear weapons. Much of what is known about Israel's nuclear program comes from revelations in 1986 by Mordechai Vanunu, a technician at the Negev Nuclear Research Center in Dimona, who served an 18-year jail sentence as a result. Israel has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but supports establishment of a Middle East Zone free of weapons of mass destruccion.
Israel is believed to have developed an offensive biological warfare capability.[2] Israel is not a signatory to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).[15] It is assumed that the Israel Institute for Biological Research in Ness Ziona develops vaccines and antidotes for chemical and biological warfare.[16] While Israel is not known to be producing biological weapons currently, there remains speculation that Israel's ability to start production and dissemination, if necessary, remains active.

Why would we want a country who is as defiant as Iran with a nuclear bomb. Better yet, why would we want a nuclear Iran, one who believe the holocaust never happened and one who would like to see a WHOLE COUNTRY (Isreal) blown off the map? This is not same ploy Bush ran to go into Iraq...Iran actually poses a threat.

Please provide evidence for your claim that they are in violation of law. Countries are allowed to develop uranium for energy under international law. You do know that don't you? The new IAEA report simply says they may possibly have a "military dimension" to their program. And that they would like to see further evidence to dispel this concern that they have. But inspectors are still being allowed into the country.

We can thank our so-called "friends" the Russians for helping Iran with their nuclear facilities to begin with. Once the Soviet Union collapsed, there was a fear that any one of their many nuclear weapons could fall into the wrong hands. But they seem to be just fine handing out the entire technology to the highest bidder. They've been playing against us since forever. Offering their hand in peace but handing out goods in backdoor deals to unsavory nations that we have to go in and clean up.

Drop a nuke on the plants, then ask them how they like the stuff. No country should have that crap available to them. It is a world poison.

Did you seriously think about your post before you typed it? Drop a nuke of them and see how they like it, and in the same comment said "No country should have that crap available to them. It is a world poison." LOL, okay, so if no country should have it available to them......who's going to drop the nuke on them?

Of course they will. To think that we actually fought the British to gain our own country's freedom during the American Revolution. Now America is skipping hand in hand with the UK to occupy, dominate, and invoke unwanted ideals in other sovereign nations. Shades of "Braveheart". Iran is next, but I assure you, it will be the toughest and will last for a very, very long time. Have you got deep pockets America?

Not when China and Russia are backing Iran; America's deep pockets don't mean much. Sanctions on Iran should never be taken lightly and we shouldn't push them around. The only reason there is real tension is because of Israel. Piss of Iran, Russia and China will engage in WWIII.

I completely agree, Hoofleau. The simple fact of the matter is that the same trick is being played on the consciousness of the American people as was done with Iraq not too long ago. Don't be so thick. This "CNN Security Clearance" page looks like a child's toy, as well. Just saying. The Project for a New American Century, which was a neo-conservative think tank back in the late 1990's, had a list of countries that they wanted to go in to. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran were all on the list. They said that "absent some catalyzing event, like a new pearl harbor" it would be extremely difficult to go into these countries. This isn't to say that the military/industrial complex is politically aligned to the "left or the "right". Not at all. That division is an illusion that is propped up by seemingly important issues like gay marriage. Don't be so thick! 🙁

Saudi Arabia is a brutal and corrupt dictatorship. Their people hate the government. Soon, there will be a civil war and the House of Saud will fall. The Wahabi Muslims will gain control and break all the Aramco leases on the grounds they were dirty deals with a corrupt government will cut-off the supply of light sweet crude. Iran and Iraq are our strategic reserves.
Gulf War I was to shut-down production in Iraq to protect our reserve supply. When the U.N. inspectors said there were no WMDs we went in again with GW II. This was to keep the price of Oil up to keep the Saud family in-charge.

Why did we occupy Iraq...oh yes, that preventative war. Because Saddam had "WMD." He was part of the evil terrorist agenda. He tried to aquire yellow-cake. He was supporting al-Qaeda.
We starved Iraq with sanctions, and painted ourselves as "liberators" of the starvation we helped cause.
        Oil. Oil is why.

LOL, Tough, Iran. Dude, really? We walked through Iraq in 4 weeks TWICE. Iran had a war for 8 years with Iraq and lost millions of soldiers. We will walk through Iran in 4 weeks or less too. Iran has like 12 navy boats. WOW.....>This major factor is this. If we go there to rebuild your nation, then we have a problem. Yes we would be there for a long time, but full out war, not rebuilding, and not "make a new govt' for you nit wits, we would be done in weeks and it would be easy. But you keep drinking Amhjadnutsack juice.

DE JA VU all over again. First Iraq and now Iran.

At the end of all this another claim of WMD lie is going to be made and a war started? How gullible can we be??

It's not deja vu in this situation... Iran's threat for WMD is very real. They've been the ONE country that has been researching and engineering with nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons for a LONG time. The Iranian leaders also vowed to take out Israel. Not that it matters to me... but get the facts straight. Iran isn't some country like Iraq. Iran is a middle-east powerhouse.

Their claim for Iran having nuclear weapons COULD be credible only because of what Iran's stance is with nuclear energy. However, the reason why we should avoid war with Iran is because if we ever attack Iran; Russia and China will attack us and thus begins the WWIII. Same goes for attacking North Korea, who also has WMD (aka nuclear bombs).

russia and china are not going to war with the US over Iran. They are not going to use their nuclear weapons to protect the Iranian theocracy. Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki , not to mention Cuba, nuclear weapons have been off the table, see e.g. korea, Vietnam, etc. your hysterical rants are not adding anything to an intelligent assessment of the available sanctions for Iran's ignoring the nuclear non proliferation treaty

Who has links to articles showing that Iran is in fact trying to develop nuclear weapons and not nuclear power? Where is there evidence of this? Also, where is the evidence that they have not been in compliance with IAEA rules and regulations? Our own CIA has said that they are not pursuing nuclear weapons. Do you people really believe that Iran does not know what the consequences would be if they ever used one?

You hould research a bit before making a statement like that. Iraq DID have nuclear facilites in the early 80's, and Israel took them out. Iran will have it's own, and Israel will once again either take them out, or start a war. This isn't mustard gas plants they're building, it's nuke all the way. Hopefully we won't have to do anything as Israel should be able to handle on it's own.

Iran is not Iraq in the 80's and the world given the economy is in no position to tolerate and illegal and unprovoked Israeli attack on another country. Try again.
