Pop Security: 'Homeland' scores for Showtime

The slogan is "Sunday nights just got dangerous," which might help explain why Showtime is making a killing with the new espionage drama "Homeland" from "24" executive producers Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon.
The psychological thriller follows the homecoming of Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (played by Damian Lewis) after being an al Qaeda prisoner for eight years. But CIA Officer Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) follows a hunch and tries to determine whether the returning hero has actually been "turned" and is planning to carry out an act of terror at home on behalf of the terrorist organization.
Critics are raving about it. Newsweek calls it "the most addictive show of the season". Showtime has renewed for season two. "Homeland" executive producer Alex Gansa is pretty happy about that, too, though speaking on his cell phone from a trailer on the set of the Fox lot, he admits that at first he was a little worried about creating another "war" show.
"That was always the concern. Even when we were first approached about the idea, we wondered, 'Do viewers have "war on terror" fatigue?'" said Gansa.
Apparently, the answer is no. Gansa thinks he knows why.
"We were convinced that if you told a compelling story about character, we would succeed," said Gansa.
In early May, just as the pilot was being shot, the CIA's hand in real-life events seemed to offer them a little more hope that the show might be a success.
"We had just finished shooting the pilot when (Osama) bin Laden was found and killed, and we looked at each other and said, 'How does it affect us?'" said Gansa, who described his partner, Howard Gordon as seeing the positive side of the energy around that event.
"Howard is the ultimate Pollyanna, which is his nicest quality. The country had endured so much bad news and in a way that was such a huge victory. I think it energized the (Central Intelligence) Agency and the special forces. It was such a big deal to finally get that guy, that the country could take a collective sigh of relief."
Like many Hollywood success stories, "Homeland" prides itself on doing its homework, and worked with a liaison office within the Central Intelligence Agency and sent some of the cast and crew to CIA headquarters to get a feel for the place. They did their homework on some of the other important themes that play a role in the show as well.
"We did research on many fronts, on what it's been like for veterans to come home from Iraq and Afghanistan, what it's like to reintegrate into society, and how difficult it is to sort of fit back into a non-combat life," said Gansa. "For Brody, if he's a terrorist, that's one thing, but if he was a guy who is coming back and is having a tough time, we wanted to show that, too."
Oh, and that lead CIA Officer played by Danes, is far from perfect. In fact, the writers have made her bipolar, another intriguing facet of the show that the producers felt they could tackle easier, once they knew where the series would ultimately air.
"We researched her illness to understand it," said Gansa. "When we first developed the show, our lead character was not bipolar, and you knew whether Brody was good or bad, but once we knew we could do it on pay cable for Showtime, we knew we could become much more nuanced. We knew we could make our lead character unreliable. That struck us as a very rich vein of storytelling."
What seems to be winning over critics is the combination of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Lewis and Danes are joined onscreen by Mandy Patinkin, who plays an old CIA hand who has been through just about everything and understands the importance of navigating agency politics as much as navigating enemy lines, and Morena Baccarin, who does a brilliant job playing Sgt. Brody's wife.
Behind the scenes are a list of professionals who have enjoyed equal success on prior shows: executive producer Gideon Raff, who was the creator of the Israeli series the show is based on; Michael Cuesta, the executive producer who directed the pilot; executive producers Avi Nir and Ran Telem; co-executive producers Chip Johannessen and Alex Cary; and consulting producers Meredith Stiehm and Henry Bromell Many of them had a role in "24" as well, but Gansa insists this is very different from the famous Jack Bauer drama.
"I would view '24' as a muscular response to 9/11. It's an action thriller. This can be characterized as much more of a psychological thriller, but hopefully it has the same energy." said Gansa.

When the kids get tired of blood and guts, they turn to sex – a lovely thing when performed by two grown, responsible people who love each other; not something I'd like my 6 year old watching on TV. Even commercials are about sex. Does the woman who is test driving that car generally shop for a car in an almost non-existent bathing suit? Maybe it would lower the price; just hope the next sales person up is not a woman.
I do not believe in government censorship, but what ever happened to taste? Reasonable parenting – which includes, working or not, knowledge of what children are watching on tv, and, not sure how I forgot this one, but on their computers? If the parents got together and protested, via letter campaigns, ralleys, boycotts, websites, door to door campaigns if warrented, or best of all, MAKING SURE THE TV'S AND COMPUTERS CANNOT BRING UP SEX AND VIOLENCE sites w/o a code created by parents. Though I realize the kids were born w/ computers in their hands (cheeper than silver spoons) and have a good shot at breaking the codes, but putting them on is a start – and a warning to the kids that their parents do care and are aware of what they are doing.. It's a preface to let the kids know it matters, that we are sorry we can't afford to be home when they get home; but as I used to tell my daughtor, if I was home when she got home, home would be in the back of my car. Thank goodness my kids are grown, on their own, and apparently doing quite well. I'd hate to be a parent of a young kid – and that thought becomes more and more frightening as the poverty becomes worse and worse. Another thing our kids see on tv – parents trying to figure out how they'll live when they are both laid off next week. Far too many kids are hearing this in thier own homes.
I guess my bottom line is WHEN DO KIDS GET TO BE KIDS and WHEN DO PARENTS START PARENTING? MY kids were furious at being the only kids who couldn't watch programs extremely inappropriate for their ages. I would tell them that 'Jack and Jill are not my responsibility.'
With all of the so-called Born Again Christians. why do we not see them in the anti-violence, gore, sex, etc.? Oh, wait. They're out marching for such Christian things as the death pentaly, the right to carry concealed guns (where else does a first grader get a gun?), things that are rightly the choice of a woman, her partner and her doctor. and other thngs that are protected by the First Amendment. And, as with all things religious, each member of each religious center follows what s/he wants to follow. I am not saying that is good or bad; it's just human nature. But it bothers me to no end when one person tells another what to believe.
How many women, aging seniors and children do we see shot up on TV? They don't want us to know that is part of sending our own children to get shot. And anyone who thinks an 18 year old is an adult has not raised one.
Where is Rosa Parks – who was just too tired to stand? Can we get her to just get tired of 'entertainment' not appropriate for her grandkids?

I watch this show because it comes on after DEXTER. I didn't anticipate liking it at all. However, I find myself glued to the television when it is on. Super smart show. Smarter than I am, apparently, because it only now occurs to me that the Brody character has yet to do or say a single thing to make it clear whether he's a terrorist vs. just a highly traumatized ex-prisoner. I love the arc of the season, so far, because I really just don't have a clue where they are going to go with the story. Claire Danes is a treasure of an actress and I'm so glad she got this part. And the mighty, mighty Mandy Patinkin who graces everything he's in.

Improving connections, impvoring the connections between neighborhoods, and strengthening quality of life within neighborhoods:Sorry I missed this important meeting due to personal conflicts, but one of the things I've felt about Acton is the land development is not uniform (not a single shared image as someone stated) there is the West Acton downtown area, the school area, the East side (Great Road and adjoining neghborhoods) which have more shopping, the very rural North-west side (closer to Littleton) with plenty of conservation land, and central Acton with the Town center, library and side-walked Rt. 27.One thing I want to see improvement in is the quality of life within neighborhoods. Presently, my neighborhood the rural sleepy side nestled inside woods, deer, and really tall unstable trees adjoining our narrow roads makes it unsafe to walk, let alone bike. We still have a lot of downed trees, unattended for clean up. There are a lot of existing potholes, and I don't see much activity in the neigborhood.I think we need to have roads in such rural neighborhoods paved with atleast 1 or 2 street lights per road, in addition to the long term development of sidewalks and bikepaths. Trees are a wonderful thing for a Green town, but when Mother Nature has started to take them down for every storm occurrence with the price of even more inaccessible roads, downed power lines and power outages, its time to seriously think about the infrastructure for connections between neighborhoods in Acton. Having missed the important session this week, I may be re-hashing some thoughts discussed, but am willing to help out in development of neighborhoods, while preserving the environmental character of Acton.

I am just starting to watch Thom it is unlaeievbbly suspenseful . wow! !!! Now its over and i cant believe how great a show it was!!! Carrie was so good and i too wonder how she will fit in next season. Saul is such a wonderful friend to her and i am so glad she has him in her life. Couldn't believe that crappy vest wouldn't work but am so glad it didn't. Now here is what i think. I don't think bridge is a terrorist and of course i think tom walker WASA terrorist. I think nadir and bridge only want to get that shit ass vice president for killing Issa why both walker and bridge chose that particular event to both try to get the veep is beyond me. I was shocked when bridge killed walker. And yes that was oddly cutecwhen walker ruffled that old lady's hair. The daughter is going to be a major consideration next year I'm m sure! !!!! We love the show, but I'm not sure how realistic it would be that a CIA agent could be bipolar. Acceptance into the CIA requires rigorous evaluation–both medical and psychological. I seriously doubt they would allow someone into that position, and even it if developed or was discovered later, it's doubtful they would allow her to continue in the position once it came to light.
To SJG: Have you heard of the ADA? If not, it's the Americans with Disabilities Act. No person can be kept from a job unless his/her disability would make it dangerous for himself and others. There are bi-polars working everywhere these days. There are meds to control the disease. I have not seen the show; don't get the channel it's on, so I've no idea how this character is played. But if she's properly medicated, and her disease is not interfering with her job, the law protects her right to do that job. It's also common to make people w/ mental disorders of any kind seem unable to be in the real world. I would have to guess there are many more people w/ mental diseases in a society that makes all of those with whatever mental disorder violent, irrational in actions, and with many other symptoms that most of those with the disease do not show because they have worked hard enough to find the right combination of meds, therapy and outside support. I think schizophrenics may take the worst of the ignorance of mental diseases. There are people with mental disorders who do all of the things shown on TV; but the schizophrenics who are in the majority do not make for good TV; their hum-drum lives are too much like ours.
For anyone with any kind of disability, there are also reasonable accommodation laws. So if this person is portrayed as having symptoms which do make it unsafe for her to do her job, if any accommodation would work – and not go beyond the cost of reasonable – she should be kept at her job. If her symptoms do get in the way, how about another position in which it will not get in the way? There used to be a show about a deaf woman (based on a totally real person) who was very good at her FBI or CIA (forgot) position BECAUSE of her disability. She can tell what the person being watched is saying across the room.
How about more shows that teach us what those w/ disabilities can do w/ the right training? And, as I forgot before, is there anybody who can explain to me why taking our boys from Iraq to Afghanistan or all the other places they are stationed in the middle of some other war that is not our responsibility? Am I the only one who does not see this as a way to make things any different as far as sending our soldiers to get killed for no reason? I may be aging some, but not enough that I am the only person who remembers the 59,000 American lives lost in Viet Nam – or the (I think) quarter of a million others who came home unable to do what they did before. And none of this includes the Vietnamese soldiers, civilians – including children, elders, women, or anyone else we chose to dump with among other things, napalm? Mr. Obama, please do something to proect all Americans instead of moving the troops around as if you were playing chess. I do not call that ending anyting. It's time for the wordd to find a way to talk or we may end up w/ no future generations to have to worry about their Social Security. There won't be anyone to father them – and w/ the way the world is changing, there may by nobody to mother them either.

GREAT show–we love it–totally hooked. We were rabid "24 fans" & enjoy this equally, although it has a much more nuanced vibe. Not furprising that a lot of the old "24" hands are on board with this one. They know how to tell a story, for sure

Everyone complaining about the uniform and haircut, did you guys feel the same way as I felt when I saw the picture of recent Medal of Honor recepient when the President was putting the medal on him? I thought he should've gotten a fresh cut that morning or day before. He had a little to much growth in my opinion for such a prestigious medal ceremony.

They might pride themselves on doing great homework on the CIA side, but they did a poor homework on researching Marines. Brody's haricut is out of regs – a Marine would never be allowed to wear a haircut like that. Mismatch with Ribbons (no Combat Action Ribbon, no Prisoner of War ribbon). Promotion jump from Sergeant to Gunnery Sergeant (which is reasonable, considering it retroactively), but calling Gunnery Sergeant a "Sergeant"?...
While the show is targeted at a non-military savvy audience, that makes it lose its entertainment value.
As it has been explained a hundred times before, the details can not be exact. They have to change stuff about the uniform, the ranks, the medals, the hair etc etc.
United States law allows military uniforms to be worn by an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production. So the story that uniforms cannot be legally worn in the movies, is just an urban legend.

@Chris Ah, but there's the rub in the last portion, if the portrayal isn't positive (and it's unlikely the Marines think this is a positive portrayal) then you can't wear the correct uniform.
I started watching this show when it first came on and found it very interesting. However, this last episode had a scene that I thought was total BS and completely uncalled for. When the terrorist guard was being interogated, he was asked about torturing people and asked if his religion was "Catholic". Where did this piece of crap come from? Just another example of the Hollywood elite always taking a shot at the Catholic church to get ratings. Totally uncalled for and should not have happened.

Marine Sgt. (now GySgt) Nicholas Brody (played by English actor Damian Lewis) needs to get a regulation haircut. His hair is too long for an active duty grunt. Other than that make sure his decorations, campaign and service medals (ribbons/medals) are properly displayed and in order. Former grunts and GI's don't take too well to having the uniform disrespected by Hollywood costume designers who don;t take the time to research military uniforms. I've watched too many movies and programs with ribbons mixed from different branches and decorations improperly displayed not to mentioned ranks that are confused as well.
As to the uniform and medal placement comment. As I understand it, they CANNOT use the actual uniforms from the armed services in movies. There is always something that is change to make it different: a medal in the wrong place, a collar with the wrong insignia etc.
That is not true. The Marine Corps has a liason for public relations, specifically with Hollywood. Check out the Movies like Act of Valor, Battle L.A., The Pacific HBO Series, Taking Chance, and even I Am Legend. These are examples of movies/shows that worked with the associated service/miliary advisor to get the details correct. The whole urban legend of "you have to mess something up on the uniform to wear it" crap is not true and anyone who knows how to use google can learn that. I mean why would you have to do that? So your not impersonating a service member? Haha that is ridiculous. The Supreme Court ruled on this in the 70's and since then Hollywood has had the right to show military uniforms correctly, although many times it fails to do so.
yeah, they can't show it EXACTLY how it is. hence why you NEVER see it 100% correct. the military does not ALLOW them to do that. it takes a simple google search to figure that out...

One of the best shows on Sunday night when my wife is in bed. She hated 24 ! The complexity of the individuals in this make me want more ( like 24 hooked me ) I was bummed that "jack" would not be back for another season but this has A GRIP ON ME. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !
