From used car salesman to alleged assassination plotter

CNN's Nick Valencia and Tracy Sabo contributed to this report

To a friend of more than 20 years, Manssor Arbabsiar was a man who liked to be called "Jack" and didn't seem to have strong views on politics or religion.

To U.S. authorities, the 56-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen is a suspect in an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States.

"It was shocking because it didn't seem like he would be the type of person to do something like that," said Mitchel Hamauei, who said he met Arbabsiar through mutual Iranian friends.

"He was a happy go lucky guy, always joked around," Hamauei said. "He had a really happy demeanor."

Hamauei, who runs a gyro and kebab restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, said the two were close enough that he attended the graduation of Arbabsiar's son.

"I know his wife and his son. They're very down to earth people," Hamauei said.

The two kept in touch even after Arbabsiar moved to Austin about four or five years ago.

"I saw him about a year ago. He came by the store to eat a sandwich."

Arbabsiar was a used car salesman, Hamauei said. Their conversations would be about "life in general," he said. "Nothing religious. Nothing political."

"He would go out and party," Hamauei said. "As far as I know he never practiced religion."

Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, an Iran-based member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are now accused of a conspiracy to murder a foreign official, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, the FBI said Tuesday.

Arbabsiar was arrested in September. Shakuri remains at large, the bureau said.

The two were in a group that began planning this spring to kill Saudi Ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir, the FBI said.

Arbabsiar has had prior brushes with the law, but for minor infractions.

Public records show three arrests for Arbabsiar over the last 25 years.

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail for evading arrest in 1987, and he pleaded "no contest" to a lesser charge in 2004 after he was arrested for driving on a suspended license.

Arbabsiar also received a speeding ticket in 2007 for going more than 10 mph over the limit.

A 2001 theft charge against Arbabsiar was dismissed, CNN affiliate KIII-TV reported.

In the allegations he now faces, Arbabsiar and an undercover informant discussed using explosives to kill the Saudi ambassador and possibly attacking a crowded restaurant, according to an FBI affidavit released Tuesday.

The informant named $1.5 million as his price, it said.

Arbabsiar allegedly sent $100,000 intended as a down payment, telling the informant his "cousin" had deep pockets, court documents said.

"This is out of character," Hamauei said. "Whether he would actually carry it out? I don't believe so."

Really, all of this is laughable. Iranians may be a tad more religious than the West would like, they are however not stupid. If this plot was not manufactured in the USA, it could have been created by anyone. The Iranians if they were to even be idle enough and foolish enough to think of such a plot, it would be very unlikely that this is what it would look like. Did I mention that those who would even have the time or position to do this tend to be intellectually accomplished and in all likelihood would not be implicated with such an individual as the one "who brought this plot" to the attention of the US? If the USA knows him for what he is, so would the Iranians. I admire the USA especailly for the good it has contributed to the world e.g; in science, medicines, a great percentage of its people etc..... However, when I read the writings of Americans about Iran and her people, I am amazed of how greatly the US underestimates theaccomplishments and capability of the Iranians. That they do not have NUKES, do not make them unaccomplished, it probably just makes them safer. Iranians are not very different from Americans except in religious terms. The educated among them are not just "College/University Graduates", they are EDUCATED AND ACCOMPLISHED in every sense of the word. The ones who come out in the broader world to represent their government and people are among the very best intellectually speaking and are not stupid in any way. Based on what I have gleaned from the various news reports that "plot" does not look like Iran or the Iranian leadershipat all. Though what woud be better for the US than to have the Saudis and the Iranaians fight? The beloved Iran would sans Amadinijad and the leaders to whom he reports would be less problematic to outsider countries. My advise to Iranians is not to give up on the bad they know for the good they do not know. They seem to misunderstand that if Iran falls, so would they and that where Amidinijad and the Religious counsel is removed, America would step it. Do they not know that in all liklihood every move the Persident/Prime Minister of Iraq is somehow implicated with US oversight ? In any case from what I have studied about Iran and iranians, no plot of theirs would be so poorly constructed. If it is Iranian in nature at all, it would probably be a plot created to provoke an attack on Iran rather than a Plot born out of the leadership of Iran.

As well, the Iranians in leadership positions and capable of such an act would in no way be implicated in such an obvious act. I dont know, if America and her fellow warfaring buddies is creating a reason to attack Iran or causing any other country to attack Iran, they would need to come up with something more substantive and believable than this apparent plot.

Those with access to the medial anywhere in the world should first note that Iran have a tendency to be very secretive. The individual who brought this so called plot to light would not even make the cut from the Iranian side.

If i were a Mexian drug lord, and someone offered me 1.5 million to kill the saudi \Ambassador in Washington, I would go to the Saudi Information and sell them the info for 10 Million ..,,,especially since the Saudis have much deeper pockets than the Iranians; and more importantly if i have the mexican army and the DEA on my tail, would i be bothered if the Iranians go after me for cheating them?

I don't get why Ms. Hunter is receiving so much hoiitlsty from you guys. As someone of Iranian descent she obviously cares about Iranian interests and is merely trying to take a critical look at the present government's foreign policy choices; much as how American patriots like the Leveretts take a critical view of American policies. I think she was rightly critical of the Iranian habit of using foreign policy choices as a tool for political infighting without concerns for broader national interests. She harshly condemns dissidents that allow domestic disputes to override national concerns and allow for outside interference or worse yet, call for military attacks. Ms. Hunter also rightly pointed that many of these reformists that are now hailed in Western media sabotaged efforts to have better relations with the West because of their domestic disputes and this is one reason it is hard for the Iranians to formulate better foreign policies.

Does it occur to anyone that the REASON the U.S. has had to support what some here call "puppet" regimes was to avoid precisely what is happening now?

These rebellions going on, ostensibly simultaneously and spontaneously in each one, are in countries where the ruling regimes did NOT create Islamic States. If there are exceptions, those would be based, instead, on sectarian (Sunni v. Shi'ite) hatreds.

We supported those regimes quite specifically, to have reassurance that they would NOT become Islamic States.

Now they soon will be. Thanks to the (ahem) "Arab Spring."

Iran is a nation whose regime got its start by violating the most BASIC of international rules – the sanctity of foreign embassies. Does anyone really expect them to adhere to a higher standard today? They have planted "sleepers" in the past, and one of the most important attributes of a sleeper is that he be totally above suspicion in his daily life. Just as this dude was. It is the person's actions which can speak louder than his lifetime of words. Remember Glasgow? Everyone they knew respected those doctors, who'd lived among them peacefully for decades, and were astonished by what they did; it was so totally UNLIKE them. They integrated totally with the population. Until they decided it was jihad time. Even the wife of a sleeper may be totally ignorant of his connections and intentions. That held true, even during the Cold War.

As a scholar of Islam since 1994, I know what YOU don't. Islam is all about conquest. Taking over the whole world. Human life means nothing to a Muslim, except insofar as it helps serve Allah's goals. For that reason they do not value even their OWN lives.

Islamic culture is so incredibly ALIEN to all other cultures that it is hard for us to wrap our heads around its realities. We prefer to judge Muslims by how our OWN people would react. Which is a basic and horrific mistake.

We also go to Muslims with our questions about Islam – in ignorance of the fact that Allah demands that Muslims LIE to us infidels. And so those "Islamic experts" do what Allah wants: They LIE. The only TRUE source of knowledge about Islam is found in its own holy books, Quran and Hadith. No Muslim will tell you the truth about Islam. NONE.

Islam reveres the "strongman dictator." These rebels were overthrowing strongman dictatorships. Why? Because, even as the "right kind" of government, they were not ISLAMIC ENOUGH.

So we'll soon be seeing a nice new bouquet of Islamic States – courtesy of the "Arab Spring."

After which, Americans will quickly decide on how they will play the "blame game." For what good that'd do.

Europe is as good as lost already. It will be taken over entirely by these "Springtime" Arab/MUSLIMS. If you can't figure out how, maybe it's time you learned what Islam is really all about.

Do you really think that Muslims crave immigration to free world lands because they "yearn for rights and democracy"? If they are Muslims, those things are the inside-out of Islam. Loathsome, blasphemous and obscene. So why do they come? Why are they there? Are they masochists?

And when Libya, Egypt, Syria and others become Islamic States, those in-residence European Muslims will have their full military support for the jihad to take over all of Europe. They will probably succeed.

Want to know who is really to BLAME for that? YOU. You choose to be ignorant. You want your oil and refuse to see the threat to our survival. YOU. And only YOU. Only whose who bother to really STUDY Islam are free of blame. But nobody listens to them, do they? It's not politically correct to say bad things about a religion, even if they're true. And then there's the oil...

Wait till you see how much oil you'll be allowed to have when your country has been conquered by Muslims and you are a semi-citizen, called a "dhimmi." If you're allowed to live at all, that is.

Four Things You Need To Know About The Iran Bomb Plot

The assassination was never going to take place. On Tuesday, FBI Director Robert Mueller described Iranian-American Mansour Arbabsiar's alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the United States as straight out of a "Hollywood script." In a sense he was right—because the plot was controlled from the beginning by the FBI. According to the criminal complaint, when Arbabsiar traveled to Mexico in May of 2011, to allegedly find an assassin from the ranks of Mexican drug cartels, he ended up talking to a paid DEA* informant who dodged drug charges in exchange for cooperating with authorities. In keeping with previous sting cases, the FBI was careful to record statements from Arbabsiar dismissing the possibilty of numerous civilian casualties, something that makes an entrapment defense all but impossible to mount.

The US thinks Iran is responsible. The criminal complaint states that Arbabsiar believed his cousin, Ali Gholam Shakuri, was a member of the Al Quds Force, an elite faction of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Under interrogation, Arbabsiar allegedly identified two men who were "known to the United States to be senior members of the Quds Force," one of whom allegedly met with Arbabsiar and Shakuri in Iran to discuss the operation. Despite the Al Quds Force's reputation for lethal effectiveness however, Arbabsiar and his cousin don't come off as any more competent than the average target of an FBI sting. They discuss the plot in ham-handed "code" in telephone conversations and Shakuri allegedly wires $100,000 to an American bank controlled by the FBI. That's not exactly the kind of subtlety you expect from an "elite unit" made up of Iranian Revolutionary Guard's "most skilled warriors," a group so effective that attacks in Iraq were attributed to them on the basis of their lethality and sophistication. (Iran's government has denied involvement.)

So much for Miranda Rights halting interrogation. Mansour was arrested in late September, but he wasn't brought before a judge until Tuesday. That's because when he was arrested at the airport upon returning from another trip to Mexico, he "knowingly and voluntarily waived his Miranda rights and his right to speedy presentment." Not only did he cooperate with interrogators, he flipped and implicated his cousin Shakuri by calling him and discussing the plot while the FBI was listening in. And all without waterboarding.

So, about targeted killing... The New York Times' Charlie Savage recently reported on the contents of the legal memo authorizing the targeting of recently killed radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, which concluded that "Mr. Awlaki could be legally killed, if it was not feasible to capture him, because intelligence agencies said he was taking part in the war between the United States and Al Qaeda and posed a significant threat to Americans, as well as because Yemeni authorities were unable or unwilling to stop him." Iran could make similar arguments about the Saudi Ambassador if they felt so inclined, if they wanted to justify the plot, true or otherwise. All of which is to say that those rules may not be enough of a framework to prevent a future in which other countries that acquire drone technology decide to use them to eliminate their stated enemies as frequently as the US does.

*An earlier version of the piece identified the informant as an FBI source, the informant was with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Iran does not have problem with Jews, Iran’s problem is western colonial hegemony that like octopus every now and then comes out in different colors and shapes. But again Iranians many centuries of experience with the westerner’s eastward push and will deal with it again. All the well-to-do Jewish Iranians left Iran because they could afford to a few years after the revolution. Those who stayed, couldn't leave because they were not wealthy enough. Some tried their luck in Israel but could not make it and came back to Iran because they missed the rest of their families who couldn't afford to leave however, that doesn't mean anything. The Jewish population prior to revolution was upward of 100,000 and now it's less than 20,000 and dwindling. I suggest next time you visit the US, attend the local Jewish/Iranian temple in Santa Monica, Los Angeles and ask them how they were treated by the IRI thugs.

Comments like this only serve to add a degree of absurdity. Keep to the facts and leave the conspiracy out of it. Obama does not want a terrorist attack on his watch anymore than we want to get caught in one. I am not an Obama fan, but that is irrelevant to the story. Everyone must take heed, there are and have been sleeper cells in this country for a long time. This man did his job. He fit in, no one was even suspect of him. He is not alone. Wake up! And good job law enforcement for averting a disaster and possibly anothger armed conflict.

With the planned attacks against our Israeli and Saudi allies, we now have a perfect opportunity to whip up offensive actions against Iran. Within a few weeks following overwhelming shock and awe aerial bombardment, we could slip in there and occupy Iran with less than half a million boots on the ground. I hope we can make this happen soon. It will definitely help Obamas case if he steps up and mans up to the challenge.

Please tell me this is satire... Either that or you work for the military industrial complex and are trying to perpetuate war in order to keep your job... Is it any wonder the Muslims in the middle east hate the US? The US has meddled in middle eastern affairs for 60 years, propping up dictators and oligarchs who suppress the rights of their subjects, all the while the US preaches freedom and liberty... The irony and hypocrisy are mind boggling...

so i reckon, in this scenario, you cant wait to get YOUR BOOT on THAT GROUND. listen, I'm an iranian immigrant here in the US... even I DONT DARE going back. that is utterly WW3 if u think its gonna be a quick n easy job like iraq (right). it will be a bloody mess with random and far away victims... these guys are nuts. if any war needs to happen, it must be a truly global and hugely powerful army to prevent a stupid bloodshed. they have to prevent anyone of these fckrs from escaping or going into hiding cuz if u think osama was bad, these guys will be 10 times worse if they can continue to live after being overthrown.... unless China & Russia waiver their support and vetos in UN, no unilateral attack will do much good. it will make oil skyrocket. it will make practically any country around iran a random target. even far away south american and european countries could become unintended victims of such a war. This is not the first time iranian regime has done such acts at all. in fact, the reason half of their officials are sought if they go to foreign nations is because of past and usually successful assassinations in countries such as Germany. If that unilateral war was THE SOLUTION. your beloved Reagon would have actually done it instead of threatening Iran for the release of embassy hostages waaaaay back then when the revolutionaries were still weak and unorganized

Yet another pseudo false-flag operation. Does no one remember the Gulf of Tonkin? More importantly, does no one remember when OUR government overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran in the 1950's? I guess not, otherwise idiot Americans who never seem to remember history wouldn't keep asking the stupid question, "Why do they hate us?"

Those intentions are not conducive to peace but to War with the west. Many time Irans
president Ahmedinejad has put down the western countries and denied
the Holocaust, of course NOW THEY WILL DENY ANY INVOLVEMENT in the murder for hire
    scheme with the Mexican Cartel..

Yes, let's just bomb everyone! That's the answer to everything. It worked in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Are you basing your bloodlust on this article? First, you can't believe anything the US says that provokes war. We have proven that time and time again; Gulf of Tonkin, Grenada, Iraq. Not everything said in our name is a lie but plenty of lies are told. Did you watch Colin Powell at the UN? Ridiculous. I bet you are a religious Christian type, too. You have to ask yourself, who would Jesus bomb. From what I read in the bible it's nobody. From what we get from the Christian right it's everybody.

true. but guess what. this is different. this IS different. Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, etc NONE posed a BALLISTIC NUCLEAR THREAT... and so what is your solution if nothing more than a statement needs to be done? just let whoever attacks us get away with it. I agree Iraq war was dumb, i wasnt alive during vietnam war, but i do understand every bit of Afghanistan war and this supposed attack on Iran if it takes places. WHEN U OVERGENERALIZE, YOU LOSE CREDIBILITY . war is always a bad thing, but sometimes its necessary. its almost like disciplining a kid. may be painful and sad at the moment, but it prevents future bad things like having raised a loser who sits all day on his ass and does nothing but BS online

Actually Obama and his past actions and words along with his personal charm and genius, sounds like THE PREFECT president for this type of situation and I tell you why. Obama CAN win over int'l community and rally MANY countries to chip in for any military action. and this time, the PERKS are huge. lots of oil lots of people, a big future client and provider. if things are right and his political will is set right, he can actually offer any country in this dire economy an unrefusable good deal for future in return for their participation in such a military action....

just remember, people of Iran showed their color in 2009. majority hate their govt. dont bomb and kill the people. dont ruin their infrastructure, dont set up long term military plans. these people are weirdly efficient and unified when faced with a common enemy. read the history. although this time around, they will not rise against any attack exclusively aimed at govt agents and military of Iran. dont bomb things that ordinary people need and use and you are almost guaranteed a safe passage to go after the bad guys and will even get help. I just know what the Iranian youth think and how they can be influenced by Iranian expats living abroad, speaking for or against any such military actions... then again, iranians just dont like wars anymore after the last 8 year long war they fought. wounds are still fresh, pictures of our dead family and friends are still hung around homes. so this is a fine line that only a wise-ass like Obama can perfectly pull...

in fact, i believe idiots like you are the ones who have caused all the supposed hatred we are facing by pulling the wrong idealistic and biased moves that have fucked the future for the rest of us to visible proportions.... in fact. people dont hate america or americans. they hate americans like u. btw so do many americans hate ppl like u. thats the real reason why mccain wasnt chosen... cuz most of us sane people here were afraid to death of another religiously fused old southern president who would call u his people and then say people are telling me to do this... then when the cost for your type would go too high and your whiney ass would start bitching about economy just like u did during end years of bush, he'd tell u, i've got a god-given mission. btw the latter is exactly what the iranian regime claims. we have a mission, given by allah, to do whatever they are doing. all of it is done in the name of islam, religion and allah... compare and see how different u r vs. them idiots.... its just a different terminology, yet it speaks to the same lunacy of a mentality

The problem is Israel, sutpidThe Obama regime is penetrated from the top to bottom with Zionists in positions to influence every strategic decision relating to Iran and Middle East policy in general. The evidence of Zionist control is overwhelming and the consequences are deadly to any ‘balanced’ negotiations with Iran. This regime is not prepared to open serious negotiations with Iran, or to ‘broker’ an end of Israeli occupation of Palestine. On the contrary, their close ties with the Israel Lobby and long-term commitment to Israeli militarism and expansionist policies ensure that the Obama regime will proceed toward collaboration with the Jewish State in confrontation with Iran.USA and Israel will not allow any country in the Middle East to challenge Israel’s supremacy in the region.Everyone on Obama’s team supported the Israeli carnage in Gaza and endorsed Israel’s efforts to destroy the democratically elected Hamas government and prop up the discredited and corrupt Abbas.Israel lobby control the media and the world.Israel is wiping Palestine off the map and committing genocide but there is no media outcry or condemnation from the west.No leader of the western countries is able to condemn Israel because they are frightened of the influence and the power of Israel lobby.Ahmadinejad was the only leader who publicly condemned Israel and rightly so.This is the main reason why he is daily demonised by the western media. Fraudulent election and nuclear weapons are only an excuse. No matter how many nuclear bombs Israel possesses,No matter how many war crimes Israel commits,No matter how many women and children Israel murders. No matter how many Palestinians, Israel makes homeless. No matter how many UN resolutions, Israel violates,The USA and the European countries will not impose any sanctions against Israel but they are so eager to impose sanction against Iran.If we destroy the power of “Israel lobby”, and make Isral leaders accountable for their crimes, not only the negotiation with Iran would be possible but also this world will be a better place to live in.

What did he have against the Saudis? Obviously he wasn't going to directly attack Americans. This looks to me like a sting, and not a real plot. Until I hear more, I'm going to class it with all those enticements to Mideasterners to do something thrilling with their humdrum lives, and justify the payrolls of law enforcement (who might otherwise suffer the same layoffs as the rest of us).

And it's a two-fer (although destroying this Walter Mitty's life comes with the territory): it will not only justify attacking Iran or threatening to, it will justify the invasion of Mexico to fight drug cartels as a potential back door to Mideast terror.

If I had to choose, I'd say it is to allow US troops to go to Mexico.

    October 12, 2011 at 9:54 am | Reply
    • Fladabosco

Yes, let's invade somebody! I know, let's make drugs illegal then set up huge bureaucracies to prosecute, incarcerate and militarize the problem we have created. The war on drugs has killed more people and ruined more lives and families than the drugs ever have.

Then hang Kissinger first: he facilitated an attack on a former minister of Allende, Orlando Letellier, by car bomb in Embassy Row, with anti-Castro Cubans. Your solution would involve stringing up plenty of CIA too. So have at it.
