The U.S. will renew sanctions push in light of alleged Iranian plot

By Elise Labott and Jessica Yellin

The United States will be looking for nations around the world to get tougher on Iran in the wake of the alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, a senior State Department official said Tuesday.

The official said that although Iran is under multiple sanctions, many countries are not enforcing the restrictions, and sometimes if they have problems with Iran, they don't speak out publicly.

The official said the United States is going to be looking for countries to enforce existing sanctions, implement new ones and cut ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, to basically match what the United States has already done.

To make the case, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other senior officials in the department are going to be placing calls to leaders and foreign ministers, U.N. Security Council members and others with influence on Iran, the official said.

The official said the United States is looking for what Clinton calls a "chorus of international condemnation" of Iran.

A senior administration official, asked if there will be sanctions on more individuals related to this particular plot, responded, "We've done what we think is the network here."

Asked what actions the United States would take next, the official said, "We are continuing to look for additional ways to apply financial sanctions on Iran. We are very much in the business of increasing pressure on Iran through sanctions so Iran understands they have a clear choice to be made between coming to the table seriously (and) meaningfully, and facing further isolation and sanction.

"We're continuing on that course."

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns plans brief the diplomatic corps Wednesday at the State Department on the alleged Iran plot, a second senior department official said Tuesday.

The official described it as an "informational briefing" and said that Burns will explain the details of how it went down, how the Obama administration handled it and the need to hold Iran accountable.

A third senior State Department official told CNN that the briefing will also try to allay any concerns that were raised in diplomats by word of an assassination plot against an ambassador in Washington. The official said the State Department Bureau of Diplomatic Security is working with the Secret Service and "taking all appropriate measures" to protect foreign diplomats and diplomatic facilities.

Saudi Ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir has always had his own State Department Diplomatic Security detail, as have previous Saudi ambassadors.

Sanctions work so well against a determined enemy country, CUBA. I think we should use less carrot and more Stick, IRAQ. We seem to do better with a stick then with a carrot.

Iran needs to be dealt with seriously. They must lose their ability to earn money. Sanctions that allow you to sell crude to China and India are never really going to be effective. Sanctions that allow her to export products to the middle east are also ineffective; the Sepahan refinery alone sells approx a billion dollars of product annually. I also came across info on the internet that a pipeline stretching from Kazakhistan to Iran is now going to be built and in the final stages of negotiation. What sanctions?

US always makes people fight, argue and give somehow misunderstading with other countries. They want to rule the world which will never happen. Stop being bully with other country, stop your lies one day they will all come back to you. And all of you who are saying to blow them up in Iran...havent to thought that this people are also human beings? Whatever the fault of Iran government, Saudi, Israel and US it's not their citezens fault. What you think you will get if you will kill them? Remember all of us are God creation no matter how good or bad we are he will look after us.
Why you wont to think of how to bridge the gap and misunderstanding instead of putting gas on the fire.
    God Bless us all...

First, you are an idiot. It's called English, and just about any preschooler has a better grasp on it than you do. Second, we are not a bully. Our country was founded on the idea that everyone is equal and all have certain human rights. As the last superpower we have the responsibility to act when human rights are violated. We also have the responsibility to act when terrorist nations try to kill people simply because of where they live, or because they have different beliefs. If you don't like it here, you are invited to fly to Iran, Libya, or Syria and announce publicly that you are American. Then maybe you will see how the world really is and why we need to fix this problem now.

As I have written minutes ago, in another place, the solution for global tensions is a massive Peace Fund! Such fund, which can be created with a stroke of a pen, by creating new money for the protection of the world, would immediately buy five hundred thousand blue casks to pacify Libya, Yemen, North Korea, Somalia, Irak, Pakistan, and Afghanistan! It will be money well spent, replacing wars as we have known them! I believe that my idea is sound and should be taken up by the UN! There are millions of able body unemployed throughout the world, waiting for this opportunity!

/ / / The pretext for starting WW III has now been fabricated.

/ / / Israel and deep pocket dual national US/Israeli Jews have been pressuring the U.S. to attack Iran since 2002. But two issues stood in the way: (1) Syria (2) American opposition to more war-making.

/ / / True Zionists are Jews first and foremost—to the point that they put the interests of Israel ahead of the interests of the countries they live in.

/ / / Gilad Atzmon book cites the work of Victor Ostrovsky, the former Mossad agent who described the huge network of Sayanim ready to help the cause of Israel by aiding the Mossad. This of course is exactly the type of behavior that has led to the loyalty issue of anti-Jewish attitudes throughout history.

/ / / Atzmon is quite clear that the loyalty issue applies in spades to the neoconservatives and the rest of the Jewish establishment with their constant drumbeat of wars for Israel—“the neocons transform the American army into an Israeli mission force” (p. 70). Paul Wolfowitz (a central focus of Atzmon’s ire) as a Sayan.

/ / / To topple Syria, the Ziosphere fomented rebellion. The rebels called for reform, but as soon as Assad made reforms, they started calling for revolution. Syria's reaction enabled the Ziosphere to demonize Assad.

/ / / Now, it's time to remove the next obstacle - time whip Americans into an insane war frenzy. A bogus "Iranian Assassination Plot" is all it takes. Look up Israel's 1982 attack on Lebanon: Israel used a similar "assassination plot" as its pretext, when all else failed.

/ / / How very convenient! To see through the lies, just ask "Who gains?".

/ / / Israel gains what it has been seeking for a decade, and Iran loses everything. Then ask yourself why Iran would perpetrate a crime on US soil that is so obviously in Israel's advantage.

/ / / So be prepared for another vast holocaust in the Middle East. Millions more will die, while more trillions flow into the coffers of "War, Inc.". Goodbye Syria, goodbye Iran, goodbye anybody who refuses to worship Israel. One can only hope that the fallout from the depleted uranium will eventually drift westwards and poison the devils and war-maniacs who are the source of this evil.

I don't believe sanctions accomplish much but I am not sure a military strike at this stage for a failed plot against a foreign national (even on US soil) is a good idea. Had it succeeded maybe. If it were against US officials defintely pound Iran. But I would simply love to see us ban (denying visas or whatever) any Iranian offical from entering the US for any reason including (especially) the UN. I have felt that way for some time, but now would be the time to make it happen. If the UN doesn't like it, let us help them move their headquarters to the Sudan.

LIESSSSS!!!!!!!!! Lies to justify more illegal war!!!!!! War mongering, false flag lies. Wmd's in Iraq, lies. 9/11. Lies. Look at World Trade Center 7's destruction for all the evidence you need to the lie of 9/11. WTC 7 was never hit by a jet, a few floors on fire, 47 story steel building destroys itself around 5:20 on 9/11....look it up. Shoe bomber, failed plot, we all take our shoes off. Underwear bomber fails, we all get scanned and groped. Bin Laden "killed" in Pakistand with ZERO evidence of when and where he died. Then the Seal Team 6 members are killed in the single most deadly attack on U.S. troops at one time throughout the entire war! These lies about Iran justifies Holder's "Fast and Furious" illegal gun running and undercover agents in Mexico, at the same time changes the subject and focus from our nations illegal actions in Mexico, selling weapons to drug cartels, but at the same time, focuses on more war mongering. Do you get it? Our nation, our media is run by the same corrupt corporations. End the wars. Bring the troops home. Vote RON PAUL 2012.

We should stop allowing any Muslim to enter the USA, for any reason. Islam is not a religion, but a political movement with religion as a front. For daring to try to assassinate someone in our country we should have a drone take out the top mulla in Iran. We need to stop them from building a nuclear bomb any way.

India is playing a double game with Americans in Iran as another CNN article rightly points out. We are also aware of the other dirty games India is playing in the region...financing terrorists who are killing US/NATO/Pakistani troops ....undermining democracies, paying off some factions of talibans protection money so they won't do another Mumbai attack. India may pretend to drape itself in an American flag but it will never fool the world that the biggest threat to American interests in Asia and Middle East is India and their obsolete policies.

Should just take all our troops from Afghanistan and Iraq and send them to Iran, most of the problems in those areas would go away without Iran around.

Iran doesn't give a hoot about sanctions. If the UN had any stones they would get serious about total isolation of this country. Then things would change.

Sanctions are a waste of time as a means of coercing a nation to change its policies. They simply find other ways to funnel in the funds they need. Iran has proven that time and time again.
Plus, Iran just laughs at our threats to impose more sanctions. It doesn't work.

If the United States wanted to really hurt Iran, the best way is to hurt them in the pocket book. That means money you can have all the bombs and bullet you want but if you don't have any money to pay for it Iran would be dead in the water. Iran knows this. Iran's only big money maker is "Oil" and they have a lot of it. For some stange rason there might be an "Oil embargo" meaning Iran would have a hard time transproting their "Oil".

Did Iran make a grave mistake but trying to kill the Saudi Ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir on U.S. soil this is not a good move by Iran. Iran's President must be drinking some bad "Kool-Aid" or his paper hanging picture of the Ayatollah fell of the wall. I have recently read that Iran has sending two naval fleets to sit out side of Internaional Waters that surround the United States, again this is a bad move. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has know idea what he has done and what he has waliked into not even his buddies the Russians and Chinese want any part of this hissy fit. The two who were captured in Washington D.C. are not going to singing the Iran version of "Happy Trails". The Unted States is going to make an example out of these two and the United States is going to show Iran what the United States does to it's people who try to kill American Citizens for something they had nothing to do with. The prisons in the United State make the prisions in Iran look like a walk in the park. If these two morens are convicted and they will be theywill be sent to the most rattest prison the United States has. Maybe they just might go the Yuma Arizona I hear the condidtions are real good.

Sanction don't work. Do you think Iran really cares if the US puts sanctions on them? They still have Russia, China, N Korea, and Venezuela. Isolating Iran will only affect the Iranian citizens. The politicos will still have all their comforts. Only if ever country in the world joins a sanction will it work, and we know that won't happen.

It will take a much harsher approach, and that's not an approach I wish to consider.

This event highlights the terror of the Islamic Republic. This is a global war – a jihad and is only scratching the surface. This illegal regime occupying Iran must under no circumstances be allowed to have nuclear weapons. This is an apocalyptic regime that wants to bring an end to humanity – and to conquer Jerusalem as accorded by their "hidden imam ideology" – but as a prerequisite, 2/3rd of humanity must die through havoc, chaos, and famine as accorded by the Hadith. We must support the Iranian people who demand nothing more and nothing less than complete secular democracy. Iran is the only country in the region that offers the hope for true secular democracy – not Egypt, Tunisia, or even Turkey – we have experienced the evils of this regime the hard way and it is time for the international community to stand side-by-side with the Iranian people in getting rid of this barbaric and illegal regime.

We all want jobs you idiot, and the only way to get more jobs is to hold China accountable for thier currency fraud along with giving Forclosurees the opportunity to reset thier mortgage loans to projected two year values because the truth is that the Banks who were bailed out have already taken these mortgage loans and written them off as losses with the IRS where they used to be listed on the plus side as an assett. We all want jobs, but we can't ignore a Nuclear hungry Terrorist State that wanted to use WMD's right here in our country. Go live elsewhere for a few years, then you will change your tune about how good you have it here and how we are still the envy of the world as to how we have the opportunity to become Millionaires or have the right to protest against Capitalism because we are FREE TO EXPESS OURSELVES.
