Iran and Saudi Arabia's 'hate-hate' relationship

By Michael Rubin

Editor's note: Michael Rubin is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a senior lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Iranian outbursts towards the United States and Israel are nothing new, but the Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington surprised many people. Iran's animosity toward Saudi Arabia, however, should have surprised no one.

Perhaps the only thing longer than Iran's animosity toward the United States is its hatred of Saudi Arabia. The two are divided not only by the Persian Gulf, but also by a Shiite-Sunni sectarian split and a Persian-Arab divide that goes back centuries.

Before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran and Saudi Arabia had a love-hate relationship. On one hand, religious and ethnic differences plagued the two regional powers. On the other hand, both were traditional monarchies who found themselves on the same side of the Cold War, opposing communism and the radicals who threatened the status quo.

The fall of Iran's shah and his replacement by a radical Shiite regime, however, transformed the love-hate relationship into a hate-hate relationship.

Throughout the 1980s, the predecessor to Iran's elite Quds Force, the special operations unit that U.S. intelligence has fingered in the Washington plot, sought to undermine Saudi stability, often coordinating attacks and insurrection during the hajj, the holy Muslim pilgrimage which Saudi Arabia hosts.

During the same decade, Iran fought an eight-year battle with Saddam Hussein's Iraq, a war that killed close to a million people. What no Iranian forgets is that Saudi Arabia largely financed Iraq during the war.

The rivalry has continued into the Arab Spring. Bahrain is an Arab state, but the majority of its population is Shiite, not Sunni. When protests erupted in that tiny island nation, it was not the Americans who have a naval base on the island that confronted the Shiite protestors, but rather Saudi troops who drove into Bahrain across a bridge linking the two countries.

The plot that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Tuesday would not be the first time Tehran has tried to kill two birds with one stone by targeting both Saudis and Americans. In 1996, Iranian-trained Saudi terrorists detonated a huge truck bomb outside the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 U.S. Air Force personnel.

After an extensive investigation, the FBI confirmed Iranian culpability in that attack, but the Clinton administration, because of its own desire to engage diplomatically with Tehran upon the election of reformist President Mohammad Khatami, ordered the FBI's findings withdrawn so as to prevent impediments to dialogue.

Alas, Clinton's initiative for diplomacy - like that of President Obama - went nowhere, not because of lack of desire in the White House, but rather because of a regime in Tehran whose ideology prevents it from unclenching a fist soaked in blood.

The Persian Gulf is always hot, but today's revelations promise to make it a much hotter place indeed.

can we just all say that the people of the world love each other? Its the governments that manipulate the thought process of individuals to create a new generation full of hate and resentment against a certain group or race. When a child is born the only thing he/she understands is love, so why train him/her to grow up, bashing on a another individual?

Through out history arabs have always been a racist and extremely bigoted people, even to themselves, hence why there is no such thing as one single arab state but 20 or so of them, whether most being arabized andfull of converts is another issue. Anyways, Iranians want a nationalist government rather than a sharia islamist one and they want to stay isolated when it comes to the region. They want to do business with everyone. For us to leave them alone and them leave us alone kind of thing.

Bahrain is actually not a majority arab country.. Around 20-30% are ethnically Persian, while the rest are indians, paki workers and arabs. Same goes for kuwait, uae and qatar... All these countries have more ethnic Persians than arabs.

Iran is going downhill pretty fast because they're not getting along well with the international community, unlike Saudi Arabia which have a surprisingly powerfull and often behind the scenes ties. I see a grim future for Iran under this so called "religious regime". I kinda blame Iran's leadership for the current status of the country. They are waaay to nosy and often miss with the wrong people, i. e. Saudi & the US. Historically speaking, the Persians have always concidered themselves as a superpower and a guardian on the lower middle east region, and that was the case for centuries... But now the tides have changed and they have to stop this obsession with being the primary super power in the region...

Everyone on this page has placed their own valid reasons why or why not Iranian's or Arabs should be or should not be liked...do you think that any one of these people care about any of your thoughts or feelings or history that has occured in the past...the mear fact that people are dying, Iranians Iraqi's, Arabs or Israeli's should click or switch something on in your head... maybe for each of you or each of us that can actually use or have a computer to send an email should see how privilaged enough we are to say how we feel but what about those who have no ways of telling us how difficult life really is, we dont know! Each of you that are attacking one another on the net is in some small way reacting or being in some why the same as our goverments are controlling and distroying lives on a greater scale putting children, families in danger...for what, for opinions and misunderstandings with things that are of no value just material and power...so stop insulting, mistreating and bulling each other on the web...its just as bad as having a war. It all starts with YOU!

Talking about racist regiems, YOUR country is the biggest racist in the area. You don't only segregate Sunnis, but also Arabs (even shitts), Kurds, Blushes....... etc. Go to youtube and see video of random picking and killing of Arabs in the Ahvaz area. Not only this, the revolutionary guards killed hundreds of IRANIANS because they were protesting a year ago on the elections.

Don't lecture us and accuse arab regiems that they are racist, because you are the most racist people in the area

hopefully to see Iran destroyed and burned As Soon As possible.
I'm a muslim (Sunni) i have many friends Christians and Jews but With Shiite or Iranian people no, i prefere to be with evil than to be whith shiite or iranian.
Saudi arabian people love anyone in the world, but Iran taught us how can we hate them. several bombings they did in our country, everyone knows that Iranian did it.

      Dear Sulaima...

Having worked in Middle East for many years, I can tell you for sure that the Saudis do not love everyone...only the rich westerners or people alike....

Plz see how all other ethnicities are treated in the KSA.

I have had little contact with the Iranians and they do appear to be proud and stubborn people...but based on history and principles (which I must say I do not agree with).

secondly 9/11 were all arabs (mostly saudis from your country) , all islamic terrorists in the west were Arabs now the US gov created this fake story of the "Persian terrorist" who hired a Mexican Cartel Assassins who was a DEA agent (suprise suprise) to kill a unimportant saudi diplomat.....laughable

funny how now Saudi Lizard eaters try to show themself as "good guys", nobody belives your shit....

Oh, so you are talking about 9/11 hah? 9/11 wasn't planned by a government, it was planned by a terrorist group.

The Iranian government planned and executed (revolution guards) many bombings and attacks inside Saudi Arabia. I'll give you some example: first, AlKhobar towers which killed 19 AMERICANS. 3 bobings in Makkah in the holy pilgrimage season. 3 failed plots in Makkah and Madinah too.
        And now, THIS.

Iranian government is the biggest terrorist group in the world these days. Everybody hates you.

You know Sulaiman, Jews don't need you as a friend. You're racist, and the last thing we want is that. Besides, you're country is the birthplace of most terrorists in the world.. so until you got that figured out, let us know.

It's in your religion.. not the ethnicity or the race.

P.S.: Please don't kill me because your koran tells you to kill us 'infidels'.

        Hey Cohen,

I just wanted to clarify a thing the Quran never stated that Jews or Christians are among infidels...an infidel is a person that does not believe in god or his books angels etc etc... No offense atheists but I guess you’re in the infidel team.
True the Quran stated that to kill Jews but who are not believers but not Jews in general
I won’t take sides here but what I know for a fact is that Muslims + Jews + Christian + any who believe in god are in one group which is under the name of believers as mentioned in the Quran
And also every Muslim knows that not every Muslim is a believer but every believer can be a Muslim

        Regards

        October 12, 2011 at 12:40 pm |
      • Bader

Cohen, your knowledge about Islam is poor, very poor. Koran was written in a time of war between Muslims who wanted to spread Islam and Christians who wanted to spread Christianity. The killing of infidels as you said in the Koran was NOT mentioned for those who were peaceful (whether Christians or Jews or any other religion) however Koran directions were that Muslims had to fight back and "kill" those who wanted to KILL them. If Koran really suggests that we must kill everyone, then you would've been dead by now... I guess. And by the way, in the Koran, Jews are Christians were never mentioned as 'infidels' but rather 'people of the book' as reference to the bible and the torah.
Get your facts and information straight before writing and arguing with people, otherwise you'd look like a misguided fool just like Bush or probably just like Ahmedinejad.
Now that's about Koran. About your argument that Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of terrorists, what about the Jews who blew up King David hotel in Palestine 5 decades ago that killed 91 people??? huh
What about Timothy McVeigh who bombed OKC and killed more than 200 ppl, and Anders Behring Breivik who killed innocent people in Norway. Can you say that because they're Christians that we can pass the stupid judgment of yours and assume Christianity to be a religion of terrorism. No. Of course not. Because terrorism has no religion. Remember that very well, just as much as you remember the holocaust that killed over 6 million Jews and was perpetrated by Nazis who were actually ....Christians.
If you say Saudis are racists, i may agree with you here but i would disagree with the generalization. Some of them are indeed racists, but you'd find a racist Saudi just as much as you'd find antisemitics in the U.S. or Europe.

I think Cool heads should prevail and both sides need to look at their troubled foreign policy and domestic issues also:

Iran is under a lot of pressure from abroad but also has some issues at home. They are sponsoring shia based politics in the region which people argue also support violence....

Equally...Saudis are doing the same in countries like Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq etc with their Sunni based Agenda at the cost of Shias....

THIS is exactly what Uncle Sam wanted when they attached IRAQ...despite Iraqis having ZERO to do with 9/11....

Let the muslims fight each other...which has started and will probobally continue...BUT at the end of ALL both sides will realise how much they have LOST...and will RECONCILE....

Why wait for that time...RECONCILE NOW....Please learn from World History...TWO WORLD WARS are perhaps the best example and recently US has sat down with all of the IRAQIs to RECONCILE....Similarly they are trying to do so in AFGHANISTAN!!!

Come On Guys...Lets Grow up! Allah Has given us everything except the ability to use our MIND for positive things!

This is their way of thinking, if he doesn't like, he tries to eliminate you. Now in this situation, they lost Bahrain to Saudi Arabia and the other gulf states a couple of months ago. Their ONLY allies in the region are Syria and Hizbollah. Saudi Arabia is working hard with the US and Europe to help change the Syrian regime, SO IRAN WANTED TO GIVE A STRONG MESSAGE TO THE SAUDI KING THAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF DOING WHATEVER THEY WANT. Thank god, our government stopped those bitches before they destroy our nation. LONG LIVE USA :)))) I'm very proud of our intellegence system

The continued provocations of Iran are much like those of North Korea. Iran is not in the limelight, they are not getting much attention. You haven't heard much of anything about their nuclear aspirations lately and that is because they aren't touting it, but they are working toward the nuclear arms capability. They touted about sending some of their naval vessels to American waters. The likelihood of that is very slim. It is all about wanting attention is all. They are the step-child of the Arab world and so they believe that negetive attention begets attention never the less! All the world is their stage and they want to dance with the stars...and stripes! There is no such thing as peace in the middle-east!

Have you ever asked yourself why Iran wants nukes so bad JoeProfet, because they are scared that the US will invade them. Remember it was the US that organized for the democratic government in Iran to be thrown out and a US appointed King installed, which is what caused the revolution by the mullahs.
By invading Iran the US can then invade the nations of Central Asia and get all the lovely oil and minerals there for nothing and pay off the US debt.

The Saudi dictatorship feels threatened by the Iranian revolution because it has a oppressed Shi'ite population who happen to live where most of the oil is located. The Iraq/Iran war was also largely because of the oppression of Shi'ite populations by Saddam Hussein. At the time a friend of the West who we supplied with WMD.Iran has been a threat ever since it kicked out the harsh and brutal Shah a Western puppet. and the Western oil companies. It's annoying if you kick out a Western backed dictator but don't touch the oil because then we get really mad.America is involved in all of this because of it's imperial designs in the region going back to WW1 and especially after WW2 when it took over from the British. for control of the oil resources of the region, keeping it's hand on the spigot and where the oil flows is considered of enormous strategic importance. For example no rival industrial power could emerge without having access to the oil resources of the Middle East. It;s important to also mention that it's not the populations of the Middle East that fear and loath Iran.In fact most of them want Iran to have nuclear weapons as a counterweight to US/Israeli power in the region who are considered more of a threat.

    • Roland

It's also interesting to note that the US/Israeli alliance really took off after the 6 day war where Israel destroyed the pan-Arab nationalist forces of Nassers Egypt who were involved in a proxy war with the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia. Pan Arab nationalism was perceived as a serious threat to the control of the oil resources of the Middle East and so Israel became part of the unholy alliance of Israel-Saudi Arabia-Iran with the Shah. And is a major part of it to this day it's why the US is so incredible biased towards Israel but unlike conspiracy theories it's not the Israeli's that control the US but the US that controls Israel without US political, financial, military support the Israeli's would not be able to continue the occupation and settlement of the Palestinian territories.

Ronald, don't forget that there are a huge number of Irani Sunnis who are oppressed more than the Saudi Shitts. I have some friends from Saudi Arabia and they are Shittes, they say to me that they live a really good life back there. According to them, in the past they didn't have any rights at all, but a lot of things changed during this decade. Those are my friends from college here in Colorado. I know 6 of them, and they are all here with a scholarship from their goverment and being paid ~$2000/month. If they were oppressed, they would live in poverty and famin just like Sunnis in Iran!

        October 12, 2011 at 6:19 am |
      • Roland

The support for the Saudi dictatorship is also what brought on 9/11 14 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi's. Al Qaida considers the Saudi dictatorship not Islamic enough and since the Saudi's depend on the USA to keep them in power they also objected to US forces being stationed on Saudi soil since the land is considered holy due to Mecca and Medina. The Saudi dictatorship is basically a collection of thieves. It's the spider around which all US foreign policy towards the region is based. The best thing to happen would be a revolt as we saw in Egypt and other Arab countries which would overthrow the dictatorship. It would seriously undermine US foreign policy in the region and perhaps end decades of imperialist aggression on behalf of the USA.

Well, According to my Saudi friends, it doesn't seem like they want change. One guy here graduated from college and was hired in Saudi in two weeks. He makes roughly $3000 a month in a country that doesn't take taxes from its people. I thought my friend was bluffing, then I asked around and turned out that they live a happy life (maybe they are more religious than others). THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE DICTATORSHIP TO ME!!!

Also, I was always wondering about this Arab Spring thing, and talked to some Saudis about it, they denied that they wan't change, and when I asked some Persian guys if they want a change in their country they said YES!!

Mike – what does your friends salaries have to with whether the government is a dictatorship? Lots of middle class & rich people live in dictatorships. Most Saudis are OK with living in a dictatorship, but its still a dictatorship. Most Chinese people love Mao and love the current government, but that doesn't mean its a democracy.

Why does America waste time and effort in pretenses to attack Israel's enemies? Wouldn't it be much more economic to just start bombing Iran? After all, truth eventually emerges and all the coverup expenses are just wasted money.

Did they find Saddam's "WMD stockpiles" yet? Yes, those that were "a threat TO THE WHOLE WORLD"? 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed and many more lost their property and livelihood, since Bush and Cheney used lies to start an illegal war. Why not just say "I want to kill Saddam because he is an enemy of Israel"?

Iranians are the masters of diplomacy and plots. In the past 3 decades, I ran has been INVOLVED in 3 wars and dozens of terrorist attacks. After the US got into Iraq, Iran started sending personnel from Failaq Bader and from the revolutionary guards in small groups to Iraq in order to destabilize the country. Same situation is in Afghanistan! In Saudi Arabia, we've known their danger for a long time. The only issue here is the fact that their actions are supported by their government, not like other terrorist groups which are working independently. I know that this solution might not impress Americans, but I believe that the only way to stop their threats to the world is to change the regiem in that Shitty country.
P.S. IRAN IS THE ONLY COUNTRY THAT HATES ALL OTHER RELIGIONS AND REACES. THEY HAVE A LOT OF HATE TO CHRISTIANS (US & UROPE), jUDASIM (ISRAEL), AND EVEN "ARAB MUSLIMS" (ALL ARAB COUNTRIES). So basically, the whole wide world!!!

Arabs have always been loyal to their friends, do u know any Arabian leader ever said that US and Israel should disappear? none, and u know why? because we respect our partners. Here in Saudi Arabia, you can't get into the diplomatic district (where the embassys are) unless you r authorized or got your car checked from the pumper to pumper.

yeah, j. here's someone who has a great arguement:

One of the things that is most puzzling about our consciousness is that it doesn't just stop when our brain does.

When a person gets medically labeled as 'brain-dead' – yet wakes up hours, days or even weeks later (and yes, that happens sometimes) – they often report experiences of all kinds of things. That's called a Near Death Experience. Some of those experiences sound a lot like the reports about what happens after we die by Tibetan Lama's. Others sound like they were actually conscious and knew what was happening around them.

To me it seems that science can't have it both ways: either the brain was not dead, and that explains why consciousness didn't stop – or the brain was dead and consciousness restarted the brain somehow. If it's the first: then people don't die as quickly as medicine would like us to – in order for them to harvest organs for organ-transplants. If the second: the soul does exist.

Patrick, you represent what's wrong with Atheists. They're so adamant in the denial of a higher power, that is their religion. They also go out of their way to try and impose their views on others. Sounds like what they accuse religious people of doing, no? You can no more prove that there isn't a higher power than I can prove there is one. It's called faith. It's better to believe in something than nothing. Say you're right, say there is nothing in the afterlife. You'll never know than. If there is though, and you've spent your entire life denying it, don't you think you're going to have some questions to answer?

SOME atheists, Allen, SOME atheists. Not all are as dogmatic as many who post on these stories. Some are more than willing to live and let live, if only the religious among us would do the same. Srsly, I am heartily tired of hearing that, if I don't adhere to this or that imaginary friend's gospel, I'm gonna burn in hell forever and I'm an amoral piece of excrement. Only when ALL drop the feeling that they MUST convert others will we be able to live peacefully side by side, I'm afraid.

I have faith that Santa Claus exists. Prove to me he doesn't.

Or consider the possibility you've picked the wrong god out of the thousands that have been worshipped over the history of human civilization. You've got some 'splainin' to do when your time has come.

"Imaginary" nancy? can you show some respect? you don't have to believe in a supreme being if you don't want. Others choose to. It's, as allen said, faith.

this is what religious people hate about some atheists. we chose to believe what we chose to believe. so do you. and, btw, i would suggest learning about a religion before criticizing it.

no ones come back from the dead? here's someones story:

When I was 10 I was shot in the eye by a BB gun(insert A Christmas Story joke) and the BB travelled into my brain and is still actually in the middle of my brain right now(I'm 27 now). I don't remember what happened after the accident, only that I was very warm and felt like I was in the bottom of a well looking up towards the sky. In the hospital I told my mom and grandma that I had died and that God told me that it's not my time because He has a special purpose for my life. I don't remember any of this, but the doctors told us that there is no possible way that I'm still alive and perfectly normal other than God had to have saved me.

I don't remember seeing anything, that's just what my mom told me I said to them in the hospital....But also my grandpa had a heart attack and was dead but they were able to bring him back and he was so mad that they did. He said that he could see Jesus and that he was almost home and wished they hadn't brought him back. He did end up passing away about 3 weeks later though.

Like the Hamilton Burr duel, we should demand the leading Sunni has a duel with the leading Shiite. Winner take all. What is the USA doing in this religious war between these two factions of Muslims? Who has the answer?

It's not the Iranian people who hate us. It's the mullas who control their government who hate us. Our history with Iran has been one of conflict since the 1950's. We supported the Shah's brutal rule. They kidnapped our diplomats for 444 days during their revolution. Please, do not invade Iran. Can the children of Abraham ever make peace with each other and tolerate each other's faiths and way of life?

In short, no. Isaac was the favored one and Ishmael less favored.

We need to assist in the liberation of Iran. The regime occupying Iran in no way represents the Iranian populace – whom are a pro-American/pro-western people who demand only true secular democracy.

The children of Abraham are the Muslims and the Jews. Christians get to pass on the wonderful family dynamic they have going. Oh and JoeProfet, there are actually several countries where the people have a far higher opinion of Americans than Americans have of themselves. The Phillipines are one example. Sorry if I make you look like an idiot, but I doubt its the first time.
