Samir Khan: Proud to be an American traitor

By Sr. National Security Producer Suzanne Kelly

Samir Khan was proud to be a traitor. In a way, he was among the most dangerous of al Qaeda terrorists. By turning his back on the country he grew up in, he gained credibility and coupled that with his intimate knowledge of Western culture to become a driving force behind a powerful al Qaeda propaganda machine.

The one-time North Carolina resident, who U.S. and Yemeni officials say was killed with Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in a drone strike Friday morning, used his knowledge of computers to help produce a glossy, Western-style magazine called Inspire that touted the edicts of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

Just what motivates a man who has spent much of his life growing up in the United States to wage jihad against it? Many of the answers are provided by Khan himself in an article he penned for Inspire titled, "I Am Proud to Be a Traitor to America."

In the article, Khan details his journey from North Carolina to Yemen, writing that "Washington's imperialism" was something he could no longer tolerate. "What they have done and continue to do in the Muslim lands is what I felt, totally unacceptable to my religion."

He details how he relied on his U.S. right to free speech to become more vocal about his anger toward U.S. foreign policies. He also writes that he was aware he was being watched by the FBI, something that played a role in his decision to flee. (A senior law enforcement official tells CNN Khan was being investigated by the FBI office in North Carolina, which determined it didn't have enough evidence to seek an indictment against him.)

"I decided to take up the pen and write out my thoughts and feelings regarding America's cowboy behavior in the Islamic lands" wrote Khan. "I knew that I had to stay under the guidelines of the laws regarding freedom of speech, but at the same time, I knew the real truth wouldn't be able to reach the masses unless and until I was above the law."

Khan fled to Yemen in 2009 and intelligence officials believe it was soon afterward that he became the editor of Inspire magazine. The official explanation of Khan's presence in Yemen was that he had gone to "teach English," which had become code in intelligence circles for attending radicalization classes.

The publication of the magazine was also concerning to intelligence officials as it became a significant tool in AQAP's recruiting effort and a signified a dangerous shift by providing the know-how for sympathizers to carry out attacks.

"The primary focus of the magazine is to inspire individuals to not just fly to Yemen and join the group, but rather to provide them with the inspiration, the ideological framework, the targeting philosophy and the practical mechanics of building a bomb or conducting a shooting," said Ben Venzke, CEO of IntelCenter, a private company that provides intelligence analysis to governments.

"To do it all, without ever having to step foot in a training camp but never having to come in physical contact with a terrorist," Venzke said. "And this allows AQAP to not only conduct attacks against the U.S., but at no cost financially or in terms of security to the group, they are able to add this force multiplier to their operations, because if even one person follows the direction of the magazine, that's a great success."

The deaths of both al-Awlaki and Khan are believed to be a significant blow to the future of the magazine. Clearly, AQAP understood its value. In a recently released supplement to Inspire marking the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Khan identified an AQAP leader, Sheikh Abu Basir, as saying, "The media work is half of the jihad." He also quotes someone he describes as a "brother" as saying, "A powerful media production is as hard-hitting as an operation in America."

It's a significance not lost on intelligence professionals, who see Khan's death as a "two-fer," with al-Awlaki being the primary target.

"Khan is unique in the sense that like al-Awlaki, he spoke English and had an appeal to the Western mind. He knew how to write and had the technical ability to use the Web," said former U.S. National Security Adviser Fran Townsend, now a CNN contributor.

CNN Terrorism Analyst Peter Bergen added, "The fact that the editor of the magazine (Khan) has also been killed is a problem for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, particularly as it relates to their Western recruitment effort, because the two people who principally spoke to the Western world are now dead."

Townsend suggests intelligence officials will be looking closely at those who are willing to step up and fill the role - that is, if AQAP can find anyone with the same command of the language and computer skills to do it. "That will be a strong indicator of how resilient the organization is," she said. "Over time, replacements tend to be less experienced."

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Khan family friend Jibril Hough told CNN that Khan's father did not agree with his son's views. "His father is feeling a number of emotions, not just today, but over the past few years," Hough said. "Emotions such as embarrassment, frustration and heavy sadness, because it was his son. Regardless of the disagreements that he had, it was his flesh and blood."

Hough, who runs an Islamic center where Samir Khan had occasionally prayed, expressed disappointment that the U.S. government opted to kill U.S. citizens who were not themselves known to be violent rather than capturing and trying them. "That is the American way - or should be the American way."

CNN's Pam Benson, Joe Sutton and Terry Frieden contributed to this report

Before capturing or killing the target, the parents, his or her friends, the preacher at the mosque, which the target attends, should all be taped, watched closely for proof that they are a bad influence on their son/daughter. It is unneccessary to say, that in islam, most children try to do, what their parents make them do, willingly or unwillingly. Killing the target is only solving 10 percent of the total problem. The 90% to blame in most cases, are the parents, imams at mosques and islam. This is the reason that all terrorists are muslims. The reasons for them becoming terrorists is irrelevant here. The fact of the matter is that they intend to do harm to americans.

The killing of Samir Khan by US forces with the approval of the President of the United States was a justified act and action . The President of the United States is charged with the protection and defending the Constitution of the United States.

Samir Khan when he fled and used the pen and his position to plan , direct and execute attacks against Americans he became an enemy. It is of no consequence if he was born on American soil , derived citizenship , or was Naturalized by his own intentions he was still an enemy. WITH OUT QUESTION the sorrow and pain that his loved ones endured ..and still are needs compassion . He was still a son ......

The unsung heroes are the men and women who work 24x7x365 in the American intelligence/military community . They searched ,listened , and planned . The "community " recommended action once Khan location was confirmed . The President of the United States executed his constitutional duties and authorized the justified killing of an American citizen .

This was NOT a cold blooded killing but was the killing of a cold blooded traitor !!!.

Wake up people. We chastise intolerance and act like we're free and put more people in prison per capita than ANYWHERE in the WORLD. Wiki per capita incarceration by country. Evev if you suggest it's tied to economy we put people in jail 4.3 times more than the average rest of the G8 (which is only skewed by Russia) and 7.1 times more than the bottom 6 of the G8.

      Chill..

      i would be concerned if:

      1) I was commiting crimes
      2) I was plotting to kill my fellow citizens

Since I am neither, I have nothing to fear. There are 300 millon Americans. If the gov't wants to single me out, good luck with that.

I can understand BOTH sides of the argument. Yes being a traitor is punishible by death in Most countries, But usually that is decided in COURT. The man would NOT have gotten a fair trial and would have been put to death anyway is my point of view, and his death would have been more humane.
The message this "execution" puts out however is that if the government decides that you are a traitor for voicing your opinion is that they can hunt you down and kill you WITHOUT due process. That does sound a little scary to me.
This man was a member of a terrorist organization, other members of the same organization have been put in prison, not hunted down and killed. He got off easy the way I see it.

To those of you who say that the United States does not target innocent civillians should read your history books. I believe we ended the war with Japan by dropping two bombs on their cities. I suppose there were no civillian casualties?

The sad truth is that war is an ugly business and innocent people die. It's wrong, but that's just the way it is.

umm Japan aided Germany in killing 20 million Jews so i think we took the appropriate measures

      • Jeff

@usa... The Japanese women and children who were killed when we bombed those two cities didn't aid Germany, the Japanese MILITARY did. All I was doing was pointing out that we have taken out civillian targets in the past.

Japan was no saint during the war. If it had not been for the bombs America was facing atleast a million casualties on its side invading the mainland, as the japneese followers of the emperor were really fanatic.. not to mention that any invasion of the main land would have had the us dropping conventional bombs which would have killed far more indiscriminately. Just look at the conventional bombing campaign in Germany you will get an idea. Way to go with your self hating propaganda.

        October 4, 2011 at 12:47 pm |
      • george

War is a human activity all throughout history. Innocent people always get killed and this is almost a rule. No matter how much we try to avoid it a handful of innocents always HAVE to die.

        October 4, 2011 at 12:53 pm |
    • Jeff

I was NOT saying that it was right or wrong, just that on certain occasions, we have targeted civilian areas and yes it is just a part of war... no self hating propaganda intended, just facts. Yes civilian casualties happen in war and for the most part, the U.S. does try to minimize civilian casualties. Yes, those bombs had the desired effect.

Are you suggesting that we're free? That's lip service and/or propaganda. Here in the "land of the free" we have the HIGHEST PER CAPITA ENCARCERATION RATE IN THE WORLD at over 740 per 100,000. That's almost 6 times higher than some unliveable places like Canada at 117 and 5 times higher than the UK at 140. Don't kid yourself. If you speak english as your native language your 5 times more likely to go to jail here than anywhere else.

Statistics never tell the full story Matt. Why is the incarceration rate higher in the US is it because we have more crime...we don't, or is it because we choose not to turn a blind eye to criminals or have a more effective police force. Do us a favor and look up the stats on our police, we are at the top of the list for efficiency of police and are also rated the highest in peoples comfort at walking alone in the dark. Raw numbers NEVER tell the whole story.

Propaganda both ways of course but his was clearly the most deceiving. America is not perfect but when it comes to a just society we are better than the rest. The Islamic ruled countries seem to be about the worst. Stoning women because they fall in live with someone? Suicide bombers? Make a case for that. The Islamic religion will eventually go away if they don't adapt.

@ Robin - You are correct. Be cautious, but not afraid. Never fear any "god" or devil", for within all or any of us is the power to kill any god or devil. It is quite simple. How many worship Zeus, Apollo, Thor, Odin, Isis, Osiris anymore? None, because people stopped believing in them. That's all it takes. From what I have seen on here, and from my own religious education, this "god" says do what I say or I will send you to a place of pain, torture, anguish, and suffering. Didn't Hitler, Stalin, and a host of others say that exact same thing? People calim they do these things for "god" ... well, if this god is supposed to be omnipotent, he shouldn't need the help, right? I have heard the rhetoric from the Muslim extremists that say god has visited his wrath on America. No, he didn't. It was a group of deluded gullible thugs who could not think for themselves and were just doing the bidding of someone else who was too cowardly to do it himself. As far as the two traitors who were paid a visit by American technology (missiles), their 5th Amendment rights were not violated. They advocated the killing of our citizens, and their magazine (Inspire) encourages others to terrorize from within. Treason IS a capital crime, and is still on the books with a death penalty, whether we are at war or not. I contend we are all atheists to some degree, I just believe in one less god than you do. Once you realize why you've dismissed all those other gods, you'll understand why I have dismissed yours as well. History has proven that yesterday's religions are today's mythology. Come tomorrow, today will be yesterday. If one is willing to die for religious reasons, let them. But it doesn't mean others must die for that belief either. That is just asinine, petty and ignorant. If you're in that much of a hurry to go see "god", just kill yourself and leave others alone. To all those who have posted on here with comments like "STFU" and "die die die", please go back and finish that third year of sixth grade before posting again.

Samir Kahn did not realize that the problems around the world as he saw them were not religion based. He made them worse by using religion. There is no credibility to this ideology he used; it just poisons the world more. Ultimately if it continues to fester will lead to every other religion fighting against each other. We already have enough challenges with criminal leaders using all sorts of bogus things to hide behind; let's not add religion to the mix.

These Muslims tolerate no freedom of religion in their own lands. Conversion means death. They do not tolerate the rights of existing religious minorities, threatening them with torture and death. Using their laws as a hammer against all who think and believe differently. They tear down the history of other peoples and build their monuments on top of them, then threaten death against any who would try to reclaim their heritage.

Then they complain about the US and our "Imperialism".

:"It really is a shame that you think we've had all those "shills" for Presidents..."

-Yes, shills, as in "a person who helps a person or organization without disclosing that he or she has a close relationship with that person or organization. Shill typically refers to someone who purposely gives onlookers the impression that he or she is an enthusiastic independent customer of a seller (or marketer of ideas) that he or she is secretly working for." Primarily Wall St and the industrial military complex to name a few. I could list a thousand names I am sure.

" when we could have just elected someone like you. Someone intelligent. Someone who would do a much better job than all those losers."

-I never said they were not smart men. I see where you are going with this, trying to be some smarmy d0uche trying to distort my original idea and be a whiny b1tch because we don't share the same opinion. Let me guess, you didn't play nice with the other boys and girls at school did ya?

"Someone who can see the real workings of the world. Yeah, a man of the world. Where were you when we needed you"

-More schtick from a troll, with no input. Are you a plant? Here to mock with conjecture when people make statements against the status quo? Anytime you want to go over the cronyism in "Mainstream American Politics" I would be happy to bring you to school.

"I love guys like you that call all those presidents names... and have better ideas than all of them"

-No one is saying being President is easy but it is obvious the level of cronyism and corruption is of the highest order all the way to the top of our regime. If you can't see it is most likely because you choose not too. Apparently you are more interested with insulting people and personally attacking them rather than offer any sort of rebuttal with substance. You are not alone, there are thousands of you. Many people have falsely attributed this quote to Lincoln as well as many others but there seems to be zero written evidence of this. It's origins are from Proverbs 17:28 and has been "quoted" for thousands of years. So much for trying to be witty and smart eh? You need a different primary source, Ask Yahoo isn't working well for you.

I want to know what this "muslim lands" thing that these zealots keep talking about? What defines a muslim land? Since Islam was late to the scene in the 5th century AD, all of those supposed muslim lands belonged to other groups - Christians, Jews, Zoastrians, Hindus and all sorts of other cultures and faiths, prior to the Islamc Conquests. But then the larges muslim country in the world, Indonesia, wasn't part of that conquest. So does muslim land mean any majority muslim population? If that's the case then we need to put strict limits on how many muslims a country can have before it becomes a "muslim land". Egypt was predominantly Christian at the time of the Conquest. And today about 10% of the population is Copt/Christian - a continuance from those ancient days. So does that mean that only the current 90% of Egypt occupied my muslims in muslim land? Because one could easily argue that most of the middle east around the Mediterranean including Egypt are Christian lands that happed to be occupied by majority muslims. So then does that mean that the only "real" muslim lands are the land of the founder? Arabia, and the area around Mecca and Medina? Tell you what, you can have those...

Islam is a completely patriarchal and male dominated culture. He left the USA because there was ZERO change that his views would be supported here. Although we are certainly NOT perfect, we do not treat women as property and we do not deny rights to those we do not agree with.

He was just another in a long line of sadistic, power-hungry morons who truly believed that they are somehow enabled to behave badly and with no accountability for their actions.

All of the world's major religions are patriarchal. Women have been allowed to vote for less than half of our nation's history, and we still do not get equal pay for equal work with most jobs. Many double standards remain in our society, and these inequalities stem from Judeo-Christian cultures. Just because we have more rights here doesn't mean we have equal rights with men. Still working on that.

Lettuce, sorry, but no dice. You're trying to equate dissimilarities with outright denial of rights. Making $.87 on the dollar compared to a man is far different than being denied the right to drive a car, or go anywhere in public without a male escort, for instance.

And those Judeo-Christian limitations you mention are nonsense. Jesus Christ was the original equal rights leader; he had female disciples and followers and espoused respect and loving treatment for wives, mothers and widows.

@tac – I did not understand the meaning of "Jesus Christ was the original equal rights leader; he had female disciples and followers and espoused respect and loving treatment for wives, mothers and widows." He may be the first one in middle east – but there were may in east long before him, had female deciples – Buddha is one most well know in western world.

We most certainly do deny rights to people we dont agree with. We deny gays the right to get married (in most states) based soley on what it says in the Bible. If Jesus was such a great civil rights leader, its certainly a shame so many Christians are biggots. Muslim extremists are not the only religious nuts we should be worried about.

Marriage is between man and woman where there is a theoretical chance of reproduction. There is civil union for gay's which is different terminology but same rights, different terminology because there is a slight difference in relationship.

Agree – but I believe the root of the war is economic rather than religious. Throughout history lopsided economic conditions have always made it easy to recruit warriors for a "just" cause. When you got nothing you've got nothing to lose. The internet and the television opened up the eyes of folks sitting on a dirt floor, eating crap sandwiches while nurturing some nasty parasitic disease. If Allah (or Jesus or any other super-hero) will change the situation they're willing to give it a try. If we didn't need/want oil from the Mid-East we'd know absolutely nothing about Yemen, Iraq, Iran or Saudi. We want their oil and they want our life. Good luck...

I always hope we have the type of president our nation deserves. Unfortuantely we haven't had one since Reagan. I work for an agency where our enforcement of the law hinges entirely on politics (Immigration). I see our priorities change with every administration based on the political party. Why can't we enforce the laws uniformly. If there is a law on the books the American people and Congress support enforce it. If it is a law the majority dissapproves of change it or repeal it.

I hear from people who know who I work for all the time supporting one side or the other and I explain I enforce the laws of the United States as I am allowed by my agency. I tell them if they don't like how the laws are being enforced write your congressman.

Both sides like to listen to propaganda in their camps. The Talibans are being slwoly eliminated( I hope). The USA is being crippled slowly. I personally believe that world peace is possible to a great extent if countries of influence and power would just bend a little and put their pride, prejudices and personal reservations aside and try to have open dialoge with those we often view as enemy. For example, former president George W. Bush frequently referred to Iran and North korea as "Axels of Evil" yet his administration never made made a concrete efforts to bridge the gap and try to understand what it would take to bring these nations into the world community of nations.

And when it comes to the conflict between Palestine and Israel, Hamas is often referred to as a terrorist group that we cannot have dialoge with or invite to the negotiating table. But let's face it, no one is born a terrorist or born evil. Terrorist ways and evil ways are either learned or adopted when one becomes isolated or sees him or herself as being oppressed as a result of a system that is favoring one group of people over another.

In Europe there's the European Union that deals with trade and other domestic issues confronting that continent. Then there's the Arab League that deals with their own personal issues and in every continent of the world, there is of course a governing body formulated to discuss and deal with issues affecting the particulat region in question. But what if the United Nations was to create a New Leage Order, where all the disgruntled and grievious factions of the world are invited to address their differences? That is the likes of Hamas, Israel, Iran, North Korea, etc. I think this would be very interesting because since Israel and the West for example swear that Hamas and Iran is totally against Israel's existence, I would definitely like Hamas and Tehran to be invited to such a world stage of nations and be pressured to say openly whether they truly believe deep down inside that Israel does not deserve the right to exist. It is often said that when someone is angry they say things they do not truly means and I believe the same holds regardless of religious beliefs and differences. And just imagine what position this would put a Hamas or Tehran in if for example, if they were to come on such a world stage and say that Israel should not be allowed to exist. Then they would definitely loose any legitimacy or case I believe to accuse or criticize the West of siding with Israel or of being anti Islam or anti-Muslim. I would sure like to see such a world organization. I personal believe that such an organization would pressure the different sides involved to communicate openly snd spit out what's realing ailing them and this I believe can eventually lead to a better understanding and appreciation for each other and eventually a peaceful friendship. I believe it is possible and after all, we are all humans living on the same planet and breeding the same air.

I feel more confident that our country will be able to detect and avoid a future large scale terrorist attack from this organization.. Seems like we have the upper-hand in this, i hope we can withdraw from that part of the world here soon... there's no need to remain... we've done our best to stabilize a country in Afghanistan that has not had a true stable Government in it's history... and in Iraq, that country is set to flourish once we leave it.. they are more or less back on their feet and have their industry starting again... it's time to leave... get our troops home... spend money on other areas

You might be able to drive a truckload of weapons to Mexico, but it would be hard to take them to Yemen. Quit thinking that every redneck is your enemy, for starters. Its amazing to see how big the cultural divide is on these boards. There are those that write long-winded posts that are completely factual, only to have a 1 or 2 sentence rebuttle that is little more than hate-filled propaganda. As an American I can tell you that our gov't has lied to us in the past, and will do so again in the future. History repeats itself. As every great empire rose to power, they brought on more gov't against the common people. In the end one of two things ultimately happens; 1) The people overthrow the gov't and peace and justice prevail, for a while. Or 2) The gov't silences the peoples voice and implodes in on itself, completely destroying the society around it.

Well, my question to you right wing lunatics is where are the Weapons of mass destructions? You aholes keep voting for these worthless republican politicians who don't care about the American people and when our people get hurt and some of us complain, you people say liberals this and liberals that. First of all, I do not consider myself a Democratic, Republican or Independent. I'm an American first and what party is in office doesn't really matter to me as long as it is looking out for it's citizens. But no matter what president Obama does, you people just find reasons to criticize him and hate him for trying to clean up the mess that your leaders left this country to deal with for eight straight years.

Furthermore, you lunatics have no basis for criticizing the president for the shit he inherited and the time frame it is taking to fix it. It took GWB eight years to screw up the country but you're expecting this president to fix everything within two and a half years despite all the deliberate roadblocks and policy delaying tactics by the GOP and their Jim Crow Tea Party. And say what you want about the healthcare legislation, but this bill is geared towards reducing our national deficit over a period of time and it is also geared towards saving Americans lives whereas the illegitimate Iraqi war has taken thousands of innocent lives even today and it has strained our economy simultaneously. And while your red confederate states didn't vote for healthcare reform, the blue states did as 82 million Americans adopted the platform of "Change" and voted for healthcare reform.

And I commend president Obama for his bold and courageous leadership because you don't promise the American people change and then when you get in office, you waver and give in to fear mongering tactics by the terrorist who lost the damn election. And while your coward leader on Crawford ranch was afraid to go after OBL, president Obama had the will and the balls to get the job done . And as some of us like to say, Obama got Osama, Obama got Ghadaffi (on thr run) and Obama got al- Awlaki. Best US president ever? You bet. OBAMA/BIDEN2012.

      Hi Joe,
Where are the WMD? Our planes and trains. Our crowded subway tunnels become death traps when some muslim nutjob sets off an explosive; doesn't have to be a massive explosion to kill at lot of people. By the way, GW Bush referred to Iran, North Korea, Iraq, and Syria as the "axis of evil", not "Axels of Evil", like the Axis countries in WW2: Germany, Japan, Italy.

The "New Leage {League} Order" you speak of: that is what the U.N. is supposed to do; be a forum for the nations to air their issues. It pretty much accomplishes that, except that nations form blocs to all vote the same on a given issue, i.e., the Arabs always vote against Israel. As for speaking in anger, and not meaning what one says, how many times does Iran's Ahmadinejad have to say Israel is a stinking pot of rot whose time has come, or should be wiped off the map, or must leave the land it stole from the Palestinians, etc. etc. before you believe he means it? As for Hamas, it is in their very mission statement that they will fight until Israel no longer exists. So how much negotiating are you going to do with these nazis when that is their starting point? Appeasement didn't work with Germany at the start of WW2, isn't going to work with these characters either.

By the way, we are not "breeding the same air", we usually breath air.

Long before 9/11 US law had ceased to be a shield of the people and had been turned into a weapon in the hands of the government. The event known as 9/11 was used to raise the executive branch above the law. As long as the President sanctions an illegal act, executive branch employees are no longer accountable to the law that prohibits the illegal act. On the president’s authority, the executive branch can violate US laws against spying on Americans without warrants, indefinite detention, and torture and suffer no consequences.

Many expected President Obama to re-establish the accountability of government to law. Instead, he went further than Bush/Cheney and asserted the unconstitutional power not only to hold American citizens indefinitely in prison without bringing charges, but also to take their lives without convicting them in a court of law. Obama asserts that the US Constitution notwithstanding, he has the authority to assassinate US citizens, who he deems to be a “threat,” without due process of law.

In other words, any American citizen who is moved into the threat category has no rights and can be executed without trial or evidence.

Constitution gives the President, and only the President the authority to protect the country – remember civics class – probably not... There is a balancing act of course in that the rights of the accused have to be protected as well. When they are in conflct with each other, the right to protect the nation is going to out weigh the terrorist's rights.

"In the words, M O R O N you are saying that when someone is attacking, there is no defense until the actual attack."

-Who is attacking who exactly? When did they attack and how do you know this? Do you have any other proof than CNN or Fox News that this American citizen is guilty of these crimes? Khan was a wacky character associated with Inspire Magazine and does not readily come to mind as a serious threat. Awlaki was a moderate American Muslim cleric who served as an advisor to the US government after 9/11 on ways to counter Muslim extremism. This is why Due Process exists, to prevent tyranny. I hardly trust the government to deliver the mail, but I am supposed to be ok with them assassinating American citizens? Sorry, not happening.

"Tell that to the 3000 people's familes that died at ground zero."

-Khan and Awlaki had nothing to do with 9/11. Shame on you for trying to imply they are somehow responsible for 9/11 in order to somehow justify your liberty-destroying fascism.

"only the President the authority to protect the country – remember civics class – probably not... "

-What I know about civics and Constitutional Law would probably leave you feeling pretty vacuous for your attempted insult.

"There is a balancing act of course in that the rights of the accused have to be protected as well. When they are in conflct with each other, the right to protect the nation is going to out weigh the terrorist's rights."

-The "right to protect" the nation does NOT supersede the core values of this republic. These values, primarily liberty have been slowly eroded over the years and has been done so through manufactured consent. Phony threats and ridiculous "bogeymen" along with false-flag events combined with the message that any dissent is non-patriotic has withered people into thinking they need to surrender rights for "security".

Ponder some quotes from our founding fathers to nourish your brain.

"Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged against provisions against danger, real or pretended from abroad." -James Madison

"The means of defence agst. foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home." -James Madison

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Ben Franklin

The real American traitors are the Tea Party and the GOP who has supported their rebirth. The Tea Party along with their un-American base, Sarah Palin, Michele bachmann,Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump, they're the real domestic terrorists and the American traitors. After all, they "don't Retreat, they they just like to "Reload." The dommestic terrorist Tea Part are going around America looking to kill little ten year old American girls while they wave the American flag. Remember little Christiana Green at that shopping plaza in Arizona? Remember Congresswoman Giffords who just a few months ago was fighting for her life? That's because of the Tea Party's divisive and hateful behavior and their anti-American sentiments that's threatening to undermine this great democracy. yes, you scumbags are the real American traitors.

And what on Earth will you say about your failing Presdeint forcing an unwanted health care program down our throats that court after court is repealing, piece by piece, as unconstitutional? How about Press Secretary Gates' and his far reaching and abusive rhetoric during virtually every press session? Where is your condemnation there? What about your labor boss calling for someone to "take the SOBs out" refering, of course to the republicans and tea party members? How about your President authorizing the murder of an American citizen in a foreign country. You're a typical democrat, hateful of anything democratic. Tea Party is not going around trying to kill anyone, but your healthcare program is killing people because it has raised the cost of almost every element and caused a wait time for care that is longer than it has ever been. How many people will die waiting for care? Who are the traitors? You and your failing party are the traitors that have devastated this economy, sold out to China, murdered American citizens, decreed laws through executive order and violated the Constuitution with health care and the current issue, the "Power Grab" where your feds are trying to take possession of the power grid in the country. Yes, you should be proud of your party, your failing party, but the people know...Yes they know about your treason, and will not allow it to continue. Send out your resumes, you're losing your job.

and just how do you relate the insanity of the gunman (sorry, let's be PC here – ALLEGED GUNMAN) to the Tea Party, et al? Every person questioned by the police in conjunction with the tragic shooting, stated that the alleged gunman had no political affiliation, no religious link and for all information and evidence gather, acted alone in his murderous act.

You, sir, are a moron for even thinking the people you mentioned had any part in his actions before or after. If any stretch of the extreme mindset you proffer, I would tend to place the ability to purchase firearms, in light of (or in spite of) his known "odd" mental behavior, was due to the liberals at the college he attended for not reporting his bizarre behavior to the authorities...

As always, and that is one of the reasons that rest of the world has a hate against you. Americans since second war who knows how many time attacked other countries in the name of Freedom. Same as Hitler did in Second war. Same Goebbels propaganda like they did with Jews. Of course Americans think they are right as Germans did at that time.
What is the difference. There is no difference. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki and two nuclear blasts that left so many dead and crippled for life, and US did it just to make sure Japan really capitulate and to try new bombs on the people, that was the day that the rest started to hate US. Than Vietnam, than Korea, Guatemala, every part of the world they screwed up and ruined people lives, and still they think and ask WHY everybody hates us. Are the Americans really that stupid or just ignorant bustards that fill up their trucks, not with gas instead its somebody kids lives in those cars tanks. And do they care, no. But parents of those kids and brothers and sisters care. Hundred thousands dead in Iraq made another hundred thousands terrorists that will do anything for revenge, sooner or later. Americans are only lucky there is big water around them otherwise it would be fun to watch daily bombings of McDonald's and Yankee games.
Americans protect THEIR way of life, but at the same time implementing THEIR way of life to the others. Gabbles is proud, his dogma is used a lot but we know how Nazi Germany ended, and every other empire in the history. I am not terrorist just a person that wish that all bullies end up in the mud and every day i am more happy to see US goes down and more Americans lose their houses and they end up on street makes me Happy. And WHY. Cose the US and Americans ruined my country and erased my childhood and my history for their full truck tanks. I hate you and wish every day that everything that happened to my people happens to your families. Plain and simple. Now as people with democratic view BOMB me or send SEALS and DRONES ti kill me for thinking different.

If you subscribe to the theory that Kahn was entitled to be captured and subjected to the US legal system for inciting or waging war against Americans and by killing him Obama is guilty of some crime, then EVERY US soldier and especially President Lincoln are similarly guilty for action taken against Confederate soldiers during the Civil war. Lincoln's position was that the south had no right to cede from the Union and that by dispatching Grant and other armies led by generals to engage the southern soldiers in battle was the unlawful killing of US citizens.

Agreed. But "religion" is man made. Not everything in the universe is. The concept of "God" is common in modern mankind's metaphysics, and should therefore not necessarily be dismissed, rather examined quite carefully, if for nothing else, to be more sure. Upon further and ongoing examination, many very learned folks have come to the conclusion that there is a viable philosophy that is based around a God that transcends science. Religion, however, as you say, is putrid when compared to a perfect God. Understanding of an eternal God certainly includes an utter lack of fear and therefore no need to be violent to achieve justice and peace. Only man's flawed senses of greed, pride and fear cause war, injustice and death. God provides for eternal life, at least is my hope and is the basis of my efforts to not be fearful.

Dick Cheyney is the real American traitor. He had the odacity to go on CNN and argue that president Obama owes GWB and the American people an apology for criticizing the Bush administration's war on terrorism strategy. So for ten years Dick Cheyney and GWB ignored OBL then they closed the chapter on the hunter for OBL. But all of a sudden, they want to get creditt for the killing of OBL. And the same is to be said of the killing of al-Awlaki. And what is outrageous is that the only thing the GOP are willing to give president Obama credit for are the problems they left at the White House door steps for him to solve. And I understand even Dick Cheyn's daughter was bold enought to attack president Obama and request an apology. They lunatics must be joking right?

But I have a question for Dick Cheyney and that question is when are you and GWB and cabinet going to apologize to the American people for lying to them about bogus WMD's, dragging us into a long bloody senseless war? And when are you war criminals going to apologize to the families of those dead American soldiers in Iraq and those who continue to be killed in Afghanistan today because you Dick Cheyney and GWB and company abandoned and prolonged the Afghan war to fight your illegitimate Iraqi war? Dick Cheyney a rope awaits you and GWB and cabinet at the ICC in the Hague and I hope you animals rut in hell.

Why is CNN hiding the fact that Khan is of Pakistani descent. Lately, there have been several incidents where Pakistanis born and brought up in the West seem to have taken the Jehadi way.

The bus bombings in London a few years ago was entirely orchestrated by 2nd generation British citizens of Pakistani descent. The failed Times square bombing attempt, was by a person of Pakistani origin, and now this.

Across the world, there are several other instances where Pakistani citizens or those of Pakistani origins have perpetrated terror acts.

These 'co-incidents' are beccoming far too common, and hopefully the US intel is connecting the dots.

I am just darn tired of these people taking full advantage of the freedoms this country provides to all, and then go against those very interests.

If these people hate the US so much, let them stay in their own sordid countries.

It will last forever and they would become bloddy heroes. The US was correct inremoving more of the malignancy of radical Islam. If we(US) had acted aggressively immediately after 9/11 maybe so many of our military would not have lost their lives and body parts.

Actually he was a U.S. citizen and killing him is a violation of the 5th ammendment and that doesn't change no matter how loud you scream.

Traitors can be killed. I personally did not want to risk any soldiers to try to "capture" these two guys so we could put them on trial. We ARE are war, like it or not and they were traitors. Traitors are killed during war. They gave up their right to be citizens as well.

Yeah well I value our soldiers lives first. Besides if we sent in troops everyone would be complaining about that. No matter what we do we can't win I guess. I do know I won;t lose any sleep over these two.

        5th Amendment? Really?

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation"

The important part there is, "except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger." – If your organization has declared Jihad against the people of the US, and are actively trying to kill its citizens, that's clearly a case of both a "time of war" and "public danger."

Don't forget the 6th and 8th too. Obama has sealed our fate to becoming a fully fascist country. And look how many knuckleheads here celebrate the killing of an American citizen without a trial, who they only know about through the corporate-controlled media.

"He was a traitor!!!" – Yeah says CNN and Fox News. Sorry I need a higher burden of proof then Shephard Smith or Wolf Blitzer parroting party propaganda.

These people are gladly giving up their liberties. Our founding fathers would be ashamed.

Terry, your attempt to be a legalist is a failure! You have a large bone in your skull, similar to a bowling ball. You need surgery! So we are supposed to go and round up all of those Japanese who attacked Pearl Harbor and give them a nice trial before we attack and beat the s*it out of them? Do you understand the definition of war??

I hope Al Awlaki's soul is now "at rest". We can kill the body, but we cannot kill the SOUL. The soul is an IMMORTAL being, and is going to go in only TWO places.....HEAVEN or HELL!! GOD puts us in this world, as a way to TEST us...and gives us a CHOICE....as to who we want to go with...the DEVIL....or to GOD. If we go to "hell"....that would be a lake of everlasting FIRE, PAIN and SUFFERING, and NEVER...will we be at peace. It's NOT a place of PEACE...but a place of TORMENT.

And...if the MUSLIMS continue on this avenue of HATE, and VIOLENCE.....THAT'S where they are headed!!

If you're still believing in lakes of fire, pearly gates and the whole Heaven & Hell story, you're more deluded than the Muslim terrorist who thinks he'll get 72 virgins when he dies...

Does anyone know anyone that died and came back? Therefore no one really knows what awaits us on the other side, if you even believe in an afterlife. My guess, since I haven't been there, is that there are consequences for our actions, good or bad. In the end we WILL find out. Might be a good idea not to live a violent, hate filled life... just in case.

        @MacRad

Your assuming that we believe. I don't believe that stupid stuff long ago (when I was of age to determine if is a crock). So no everyone will not know. I know we would all like to think that there is an answer, but I don't have to try and fool myself just to try and gain one.

I have often wondered, when Muslims "pray"......who do they pray to, THE DEVIL?" Because, after all, ONLY GOD...can exact REVENGE on the ENEMY, and NOT a single MUSLIM. Who do they really pray to?...I'm curious about this....because, when you use the word "Pray"...that prayer ONLY goes to GOD....and NO ONE ELSE!! Even Muslims USE the word "GOD".

"And GOD willing"....is an often phrase used by the Muslims. So...they MUST believe in GOD....and NO ONE ELSE!! You see...when Al Awlaki was killed, HIS SOUL went up to GOD...."and was JUDGED BY GOD, at that very INSTANT. Of course, I'm willing to bet, that, HEAVEN is certainly NOT one of the places he is scheduled to visit. Most likely HELL!! And.....until they believe in that, their NEFARIOUS and EVIL ways will never stop.

The Religion itself feeds off, and seem to exist on VIOLENCE!! And HATE!! ....Sometimes, when we get mad at someone, we tell them...."Go to HELL"........as a verbal assault. And, it's considered an INSULT to an enemy!!

Now let us see where violence and hate is coming from?
      1. Who bomed Iraq and killed over a million civillians.
      2. Who created thosands of orphans in Afganistan.
      3. Just go back another decade. Who carpet bombed Vietnam? How many died?

The answer is CHRISTIANS!! What kind of devil do they pray to? I just wonder?

        Hi Bobby,

        1. Who Bom(b)ed Iraq and killed a million civilians?

Nobody. In the eight years we have been there, about 300,000 civilians have been killed; 75-80% of who were killed by other muslims.

        2. Who created thosands of orphans in Afg(h)anistan. (?)

        The Taliban.

        3. Just go back another decade. Who carpet bombed Vietnam? How many died?

The Vietnam war ended almost 40 years ago, not a decade ago. How many died in the decade before we got involved? After we pulled out all of our troops, the khmer rouge killed 2,500,000 people: you've heard of "the killing fields"? Was that OK?

Do some reading other than these silly blogs. Lots of nonsense expressed in the things.

The victory once again is American intelligence, winning the war for 10 years! Were listening, were watching and were taking names. If you see something say something. Remember that for you citizens and remember you don't have to be Muslim to be a terrorist. I do sadly feel though that we will see more of this, American's turned extremist terrorists. Thanks and praise to NSA, we have won the war for yet another day!

Is this the same US "intelligence" that helped get us into a war in Iraq in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction that never existed – yet resulted in tens of thousands of dead and maimed US soldiers, upwards of 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians and nearly a trillion dollars of wasted spending? Thought so.

        October 3, 2011 at 6:07 pm |
      • FugginMorons

Oh the weapons of mass destruction existed, we know because we have the recent. We armed Saddam to the teeth. When Saddam gassed the Kurds at Halabja it was American chemicals and American consent that allowed it to happen.

However by the time we decided to invade and occupy Iraq, those weapons were long gone. But don't let truth get in the way of a good narrative. It's easier to convince a scared populace of the need for war then it is to convince and educated and knowledgeable populace.

I'd guess 90+% of Americans get all their news and world information from CNN and Fox News. That's part of the reason why this nation is filled with narrow-minded dim witted sheep who let the media do their thinking for them. Kinda like 1930's Germany.

"Oh please Mr. Government, keep us save from those evil J3ws and those scary Poles. Here take my rights and liberty just keep me safe"
