Al Qaeda leader killed in Pakistan

By National Security Supervising Producer Adam Levine

An al Qaeda figure identified as the terrorist network's chief of operations in Pakistan has been killed, a U.S. officials said Thursday.

Abu Hafs al-Shari was killed in Waziristan, Pakistan, according to one of the sources.  While there was no explanation how he was killed, it is known armed predator drones have been used to kill suspected terrorists.

One US official called it a "blow" to the core of Al Qaeda.

"The loss of their chief of operations in Pakistan, an individual who played a key operational and administrative role for the group, will pose a challenge for Zawahiri.  Abu Hafs was a contender to assume some of [recently killed Atiyah abd al-Rahman's] duties, coordinated al Qaeda’s anti-US plotting in the region, and worked closely with the Pakistani Taliban to carry out attacks inside Pakistan."

A senior administration official said the strike will "further degrade" Al Qaeda's ability to recover from the Rahman killing in August because " because of his operations experience and connections within the group."

The pressure on Al Qaeda in Pakistan has been significant with a number of key leaders, most notably Osama bin Laden, being eliminated.  Earlier this week, the top intelligence official at the Pentagon said US counterterrorism operations have left the group feeling "besieged."

"Its senior leaders are being eliminated at a rate far faster than al Qaeda can replace them, and the leadership replacements the group is able to field are much less experienced and credible," said Michael Vickers, the Under Secretary for Defense Intelligence at an event in Washington on Tuesday. Vickers said the pressure on Al Qaeda has left it in a "precarious" postiion and predicted that at this rate the group could be eliminated wtihin the next two years.

"We have substantially attrited AQ's mid-level operatives, trainers and facilitators, its recent recruits, including several westerners, and senior leaders and operatives of its safe haven providers," Vickers said.

The head of the Central Intelligence Agency, David Petraeus, told Congress on Tuesday that the pressure could lead to Al Qaeda rank and file fleeing Pakistan to Afghanistan or leaving south Asia.

Vickers said that this year alone the terror group has lost eight of its "top 20" leaders and of all its top leaders from 2001 only one, Ayman al-Zawahiri, remains. The killing of al-Shari raises the total to nine.

Yeah, what did we get from that stupid Osama guy? My, my, my, amazing how suddenly all of the top commanders in Al-Qaeda are getting knocked down and out. I wonder if Fox News will continue to run with the whole: Yeah, Osama was small potatoes bull.

Anyone besides me notice the last 3 killings of the terrorist groups top guys & major fire fights have been after the capture of 1 terrorist who carried messages after the Pakistani government captured him , & no mention about him since ? No pictures, BUT that COULD be because he is probably in pretty bad shape during the process of getting the information out of him, I`m thinking. Most likely burying the dead ones on land or at sea in secret locations.Sea would be best. No shrine , & big fishes to big fishes 🙂

You're a complete nutcase. Why aren't you out killing muslims if you think it's such a noble deed? Why are you on a comment section online? Aren't the muslims coming to get us any second now?

Why is it OK for you to say that every Muslim should die while at the same time you decry them saying all Christians should die?

Aren't you guys essentially saying the same things about each other? What separates you from them? Please let me know I'm interested to know why you think an entire religion should be exterminated.

What I cannot understand for the life of me, is how this guy was living in Pakistan just like Osahma Bin Laden right under thier noises, and no one in the Pakistani intelligence or Police force ever DID ANYTHING.

Itr's nice to make sweet little agenda laced statements about how intelligent you are so it can justify your own distrust of your own gov't...but seriously, in this case, you people should be thanking the U.S. Intelligence committee for doing a job the PAKISTANI's refuse to do.

It also says sooo much about how undeserving you all are and how if you think you would be so mucbn better off living somewhere eklse, maybe you should just go live there, and CHECK OUT THE SPOILED ROTTEN REALITY OF YOUR OWN LIFE FIRST HAND.

If you'd read the article with a little more care, it said he was killed in the Waziristan region of Pakistan which has actually been taken over by AQ and Taliban forces. The Pakistani government has no control in this region at the moment, so it's very unlike the situation with Osama bin Laden, who had literally been living right under the military's nose.

The FBI and DEA fabricate evidence, steal from suspects and use murder to close those bad cases.
How is it that 12 of the 9/11 terrorists could live for 2 weeks just 2 miles from NSA head quarters in Maryland.
This after several of them had taken flight simulator lessons on Jumbo jet trainers and several of them where on State department terror watch lists.
There is evidence that employees from DoD, CIA and DOJ accepted bribes from Al Quida.
If DoJ and DoD employees where more concerned with doing their jobs than enriching themselves by stealing from suspects and taking bribes, then there might have been more a chance that 9/11 had never happened.

Yes, it is well documented and nobody here is debating with you because that happened almost 10 YEARS AGO! People change and they become radicalized. You continuously blame American's for being blood-thirty Mongols that only want war, but shout "But he dined in the.........!", which was an effort to help nation build by including Muslims in the healing process. How is playing the double game to get people either upset or make yourself look good working out for you?

Joe, we heard you. That's at least the third time you've responded to a comment with that. What is your point?

Here, I'll admit it. Bush flew all four planes via remote control on September 11th because someone was about to reveal that the Government had billions of dollars hidden in the World Trade Center and the finance office of the Pentagon.

Oh wait, it wasn't a plane that hit the Pentagon, it was a missile. Oh, and an F-16 shot down the plane over Pennsylvania. No wait, neither that plane, nor the plane that hit the Pentagon actually ever existed.

Cheney was also pulling a Slim Pickens, riding one of the planes and yelling "Yee Haw!" into the WTC. I saw it! I really did. All the evidence points to it.

Did I pretty much cover everything?

        September 15, 2011 at 6:01 pm |
      • Sashland

Yep, you left off with that other burning question: if it was a missile that struck the Pentagon, where is the plane and all of its passengers? never existed? autopiloted into the ocean? Were they all CIA and are now 'new-identity' spies?

Yep, just a little pesky detail... with no good answer.

Logic has a cleansing effect ton fantasy.

        September 15, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
      • Joe

Bill...because I am reporting on the FACT that al-alwaki was dining at the Pentagon, does that mean I think Bush flew planes into the tower?

BIlly gotta use your brain before you type. Nothing you are saying pertains to anything I am saying. C'mon, big guy...just think harder! You can do it!

        September 15, 2011 at 6:13 pm |
      • Bill

Joey, I'm not denying the fact that Al Waki dined at the Pentagon. It's not a secret. I do, however, doubt that there was anything sinister behind it. Is our Government flawed? Of course, I just have a hard time believing that everything that the Government does, or doesn't do has to have some sort of evil plot behind it. If you choose to believe that, that is your right. Regardless, our little debate has been entertaining. I wish you well.

        September 15, 2011 at 6:27 pm |
      • Joe

Bill...honestly I wish you well as well. Thanks for serving our country.

But I hope you will wake up and see that questioning the government is not anti-American. In fact, our whole system was set up just so we can question the government.

Me being concerned about al-alwaki dining at the Pentagon shouldn't cause you to be upset. If you're not concerned about it, so be it. But let me have my concerns without calling me names. This isn't preschool.

And, by the way, it was secret for almost 10 years before we found out about it.

        September 15, 2011 at 6:30 pm |
      • Bill

I don't recall calling you any names. If I did, then I apologize. I do agree with you that we need to question our Government; however, there is a big difference between questioning and accusing. A lot of people go beyond the simple questioning of why something happened and cross the line into accusing people of sinister things.

        September 15, 2011 at 6:37 pm |
      • Joe

I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I'm simply saying I'm concerned that the #3 in al Qaeda dined at the Pentagon. That greatly concerns me.

It should be a huge news story and not some blurb 10 years after the dinner happened. It just makes me wonder. If it doesn't make you wonder, that's fine. At least you're informed about it happening.

Blah, blah, blah, I don't trust the Government. Blah, blah, blah, the Government is bad. Blah, Blah, Blah, war is bad. We should all just sit around and sing Kumba Ya and bury our heads in the sand that there are bad people out there that want to kill us.

So, tell me, what is the solution?

    September 15, 2011 at 4:44 pm | Reply
    • Joe

No way dude...government is good and we should just blindly trust them.

Anyone that doesn't trust government is just a peace loving hippy who sings Kumbaya. Good point.

Look at history it is absolutely filled with tyrants and despots. If you lived in those societies, I guarantee you would be saying the same exact thing you are now : "oh, it's not so bad. You should always trust government. They want what's best for us."

Go ahead and trust the government all you want...but don't call me a nut for not blindly having faith in people that are constantly caught in lies for their own gain.

      • Bill

So then, what's your Utopian solution? People are very quick to criticize, but seldom have a solution. Oh, and no, I don't fully trust the Government. Government is run by men and most, if not all men have an agenda. I'm just saying that I've been all over the Middle East and there's no place I'd rather be than here. That's not the depleted uranium talking, that's simply the fact that America may have her flaws, but there's no better country on Earth. If people aren't happy with her, they should find some place else to go.

Bottom line, quite complaining on CNN and do something about it.

        September 15, 2011 at 4:54 pm |
      • Joe

My solution is to try to make more and more people aware to the lies and deceptions government use throughout history to get into war so they can profit. It's an age old trick to make up an enemy and hype it up so that they people get scared and are more willing to accept permanent war which means permanent money, land and resources for the ones in charge.

The more people realize this, the less possible it will be for government to fool us.

Obviously, you're too smart for my evil tricks and you know that government is truthful and honest ALWAYS and loves us all very much.

        September 15, 2011 at 4:59 pm |
      • Joe

the fact that i have to have some "utopian solution" to criticize the government is ridiculous, anyways. I don't need to have a fool-proof solution in order to say I feel someone else is wrong.

I know you all wish I was "sterlized" and you all want me to shut up, but I hope one day you'll realize that you're being deceived by the ones you trust most.

Joe, here's an idea – pack your S#$% and get out of this country. I guarantee that if you spent 24-48 hours in Pakistan or Afghanistan at the feet of those regimes, you would be crying to momma to come back to the good ole' US of A. What are your questions?

        September 15, 2011 at 5:22 pm |
      • Joe

So I should leave the country because I don't agree with the current government? Because I don't trust the government, I should leave the country that I love and was born in?

Can any of you neanderthals speak without uttering a curse or calling a name or is that impossible?

If you want to blindly trust government...why don't YOU move to Afghanistan or Iraq? There, the people have to trust government because if they talk bad about them, they are killed or thrown in jail.

Here in America, people are free to have their opinions and say whatever they want. Even if it makes you hopping mad that someone doesn't agree with you.

If you knew anything about America, it was created so that people like me can dissent and share their views. If you don't like that, maybe you should leave the country?

Or just call me some more names like a crybaby.

Are you upset at all that the #3 in Al Qaeda dined at the Pentagon after 9/11? Should anyone be concerned about that?

So Joe, What you are saying is blindly believing the government is bad? what is blindly not believing in the government? I dont think you can have one without the other. Greed, Power, Secrets are foundations of all nations...there are secrets because most people in Jack Nicholson voice "cant handle the truth!" Every psychopath, tree hugging, nazi, muslim, pygmy, Irish, Italian, Black, Mexican, white bigot would create anarchist comments...Remember Life before the internet, when people had to actually read more besides TV propoganda. Trash information is too easy. Whether the Osama, Jesus, Mohammed, and Bush were eating dinner in the Pentagon the day on 9/10...does it matter? It still happened, we can only move forward and not dwell on yesterday...Respect it, learn from it. but conjuring up a Yetti, some ghost, and Nessie with modern day folklore gets you no where..I do know one piece of matter what you write....You Werent There and Google is not a Research engine nor Jessie the Body Ventura. September 15, 2011 at 5:43 pm |
      • Bill

So, that's a no then. Oh, and Youtube is such a reliable source for information. The burden of proof is normally on the person that claims something. It's just a copout to spout something and then tell people to go look it up for themselves. If it were reliable, you'd have a source to back up your claim. As for Bush being a wartime President, well, he was President during a war, so I guess that qualifies the statement. Obama is a wartime President as well. What is your point?

        September 15, 2011 at 5:46 pm |
      • Joe

Bill doesn't know how to investigate. He just listens to whatever government says and goes with that.

Bee stings are more likely to kill the average American than terrorists. That's all I'm saying.

I know it's hard for you to compute this but America was built on the foundation to criticize and rebuke our government. Government throughout history become corrupt and engage in wars with other countries for power and land. Our founding fathers set up a system so that dissent was always tolerated so we can hold our leaders to the fire.

Whether you believe in what I say or not, you should call me a "whiner" for not going along with a government's plan that I simply don't believe in.

There are far more dangerous things right here in America than terrorists affecting our day to day life. Yet we're obsessed with a rag tag gang of thugs with no army or navy thousands of miles away. It's paranoid and insane in my opinion.

Why would Duane doubt the government? They have never lied EVER. They are honest and only want what is best for us.

If you look at history, the world is filled with great, loving governments who would never lie or hurt their own people. People like Mao, Hitler, Gaddafi, Castro, Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Pinochet and all the loving kings and queens of the past have always done what is best for the people.

And finally, we all know history never repeats itself. So everything is just fine. The government is here to protect us from the scary bearded men that are hiding under every bed.

Al-Awlaki was living in the US (Virginia) when he was invited to the Pentagon, along with other Muslim religious leaders as part of an outreach to the Muslim community in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. He was vetted and considered a moderate at the time.

The names of all of these men are beginning to run together in a blurred cloud of smoke in most Americans minds. We should just call them Bottom Dweller 1, Bottom Dweller 2 etc.

Jessica, what should be burning in American's minds is why one of these "bottom dwellers" was invited to dine secretly at the Pentagon after 9/11?

You're being lied to. Read 1984.

Yep it's all OK for an Al Qaeda leader to dine at the Pentagon. Makes perfect sense. He was deemed a "moderate" so everything is fine. Who cares that suddenly afterwards he moves to the middle east and is menacing America all of a sudden? The government said it was all just a mistake so we must believe that.

High level Al Qaeda members dining at the Pentagon isn't something to raise your eyebrow about. Anyone that is concerned about terrorist leaders dining at the pentagon is a conspiracy nut. It's a perfectly normal thing.

You guys don't get it. The only thing that Obama did right was put David Petreaus in charge of afgan operations. Bush made the tough choices to get the CIA in place to get the intelligence needed to get most of these folks. OBL was taken down, not by a drone but by the soldier and good intelligence, thanks to Bush and all of those bad things that you whining liberals don't support. Thank David Petreaus and GW!

So, it's GWB, who presided over the CIA's incompetent ignoring of the 9/11 plot, then cleaned house and was set up by his fired CIA analysts to invade Iraq with blatantly false intelligence reports, who is responsible for the recent intel on OBL's location and GWB ordered Obama to sign the termination order, huh?

It took Obama, though, to listen to good CIA intel (not wishful thinking on the part of Dick Cheney and Haliburton) to send in a Navy SEAL team to take out OBL. Why send in tens of thousands of ground troops to take out a small terrorist group leader? All Bush did was give Al Qaeda a recruiting video and a homeland (Iraq). Putting so many Americans in a Middle East country was like ringing the dinner bell saying "Come and get it!".

Yes, you can win a war by killing all the bad guys. A long list of criminal and terrorist organizations have been dismantled by the US and the strategy is mostly the same: continuously eliminate senior leadership and the group collapses from lack of organization and brain drain. It's not easy and it's not fast but it works in the long run.

Of course, since you're in denial, you won't believe me. If you google it you'll see the Pentagon and mainstream media admitting it.

Then your mind will flip into how you can rationalize that it was just a big mistake.

I'm not denying it at all. I read the articles. The Government is damned if they do, damned if they don't. They invited him there because he was a Muslim cleric and very influential in the community. They thought that they might be able to get him to calm down the tensions. If they wouldn't have invited him, they Muslim community would have deemed the Government more racist than it already had. Now that they did, imagine that, another Muslim cleric linked ot Al Qaeda. See a pattern here?

Why wouldn't he attack the Americans? Why would he trust the Americans, his sworn enemy?

You're in complete denial, Bill. If you really believed terrorists were a threat to America, why wouldn't you be out fighting the good fight? Why are you online in a chat forum?

I love this country at least as much as you love it. That doesn't mean I trust the government or believe anything they say.

Basically, you were spewing half-truths you learned off the conspiracy forums and the Internet and people called you on it.

      Two differences:

      a. The CIA was supplying the rebels with sophisticated weapons to help them fight back.

      b. The Soviet Union had far bigger financial problems than Afghanistan. Their defeat was more important as a psychological tool (The Soviet state is not invincible) than as a financial problem.

    • Menos

Please stop and pick up a book. Your logic is fatally flawed for several reasons that only research can save you from. At the highest level, the Soviets invaded a country to annex it as it's own. There was no plans or option for withdrawal. We're now embroiled in a counter terrorism and counter insurgency battle against very specific Taliban and Al Qaeda targets. There are more fundamental differences than things in common with your analogy.

      September 15, 2011 at 3:02 pm | Reply
    • Jared

The difference is that the Soviet Union was spending nearly 20% of their total GDP on defense spending whereas the USA, despite the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, still only spends about 4%.

      September 15, 2011 at 3:04 pm | Reply
    • Schmedley

Not entirely similar because the Soviet Union's economy was far weaker than ours. I think I read somewhere that during the cold war, the Soviets and US spent roughly same amount of money on defense dollar-wise. However, that expenditure represented over 25% of the Soviet Union's GDP while it was about 3-4% of US GDP.

The Afghan war is certainly not helping our economy, but it won't kill us.

Another thing to think about: Suppose we pull all the troops home in this economy and cut defense spending to save money. Where are all of those soldiers going to go if there are so few jobs? Sounds like an unemployment train wreck...

View from up north. The greatest friend and allies to Canada are Great Britain and the US. Most people I know believe this. WE get concerned when we see our brothers to the south argue so much. Like it or not we are at war. Do we really care who gets theses bastards and do we not want all our boys and girls to come home safe? This is not a criticism of our rights to free expression, although would it not be more productive if we took a collective sigh and backed those leaders who have had the guts to make decisions that make us safe. Obama is doing a great job. He is the Commander-in-Chief and clearly has the final say. The GOP has some seriously legitimate concerns that must be addressed/fixed. You are the greatest democracy in the world...don't let it fall apart with bickering. There is a job to be done so simply do it. The rest of the world, although many times critical, depend on you good people. Our boys and girls are over there as well. In the end, everyone wants the same outcome...the removal of these murderous bastards and a stabilized world where these type of events do not occur again. Keep your eye on the ball.

We are a country of 37 million. There is only so much we can do. Slapping your friend in the face when they are doing the best they can is not a sign of friendship. I agree, we should do more. It is intersesting that of the two responses 50% were negative. While this is not a mathematical certainty, most Canadians agree with our friends to the south. Please do not think that all Canadians do not support this war...we just want it finished as soon as possible. What happened to you our friend, also happened to us. If the US is not safe, neither are we. Many of our people have died to secure this. Again, keep your eye on the ball.

Remember Sidewinder that the trail to Osama Bin Laden went through intelligence gathered under Bush through the waterboarding program. They used that information from Khalid Shiek Mohammed to lead to the couriers of Osama. To you, Obama gets credit for the successes of a program he does not support. It is the work of intelligence and military getting the job done, and good policies further enable them. Neither president is on the front lines.

Remember, even though Bush is a likeable guy that any redneck would like to have a beer with, he doesn't deserve a free pass just because he is a doofus... he was the president of the Freakin' USA for cryin' out loud. If that nimrod's loopy brain hadn't been distracted by Iraq, he could have found Bin Laden himself. Worse, he never would have let him escape by refusing to send in the troops the US special forces requested when they had him surrounded at Tora Bora.

        September 15, 2011 at 2:49 pm |
      • Sidewinder

True enough: intel gathered under Shrub's watch led to op that finally nailed OBL. However, at the beginning of the Afghan campaign, when that same intel had OBL's location at Tora Bora, and the team was ready to go in and finish the job, they were told to stand down from way up the chain of command. What other reason could there be for that. Getting OBL on the Afghan side of the border would have required much smaller testicles that what was needed to violate Paki soverenty to do what needed to be done. Furthermore, the reports indicate we knew where he was for some time before the 2008 what was Shrub waiting for. I doubt he would have ever dropped the hammer on OBL due to their families relationships.

Obama isn't directing any of this. It's the same group in the CIA that's been doing it for years. It takes time for agents to infiltrate. Now that they're infiltrated we're seeing the results.

This is how you win the war on terrorism, not by invading an uninvolved country, spending trillions of dollars of borrowed money, and killing 100,000's of innocent people... understand now neo-fascists... oopps, I mean, neo-cons... Also a couple of other reminders. The "community organizer" has had INS deport more illegal immigrants in his 2-1/2 years in office than Dubbya's did in 8 years. Dubbya took more vacation days per year than the "community organizer" has in his 2-1/2 years in office combined. The "community organizer", like "Bubba" gets up early, works late, and finds out the answers before he asks the "experts" the questions; whereas Dubbya slept until after 6 and went to bed by 10, and believed anything told to him by the Triumvirate who ran the White House – Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove. The only way he got any other info was if Condi Rice sneaked by the Unholy Trio.

All the US troops have died in vain, the war has been lost in both Iraq and Afg. There is no peace in either of the country. Almost ten years after the war, Couple days back, Tal attacked the NATO with such courage, like they were as strong as before the war.
Iraq is a mess, and US will be getting out of there soon, yet another loss.

The ideology breeds them. It has to be done by forcing a change in ideals, bringing education, and making the people themselves reject the Taliban, Wahabism, and extreme religion in general.

Right on target – their asiatic culture tends to produce people who get all excited about this stuff and will kill indiscriminately. You have to change the culture and we can do that with TV and schools and jobs that don't produce poppies to make heroin. We've seen they do want to change, they're not fools but the pressure of tribal politics and religion is a hard nut to crack.

        September 15, 2011 at 1:48 pm |
      • Interesting

This message is for Carol Clarke:

I will agree with you and Brian that the thought process, their ideals and the influence has to be changed rather than just killing people as they will be replaced. This has been true over the generations on all sides (think of the crusades – each side could claim the same). We have religious conservatives and hardcore fanatics in the US today who are hardliners (they are not killing people but if put in a situation like in Afghanistan would probably do the same judging by the messages.

It is not the asiatic cluture that is any different. Asia has many cultures and religions – some preach total non violence (like Bhuddism and Jainism). So, the generalization is not appropriate. if you look at history the two religions that have always look to spread and had the most violent history were catholicsm and muslims.

        September 15, 2011 at 2:29 pm |
      • Gary are exactly right. We have seen where Muslim boys are taught to hate at very early stages, and that learned trait is reinforced their entire lives. The world will forever fight the fires of that hatred until someone (hopefully the moderate Muslims and not us) do away with the match makers.

What is the matter with President Bro-blah-blah?? He says he is fighting this war on terrorism but we continoe to support the countries that give shelter to the very people who would see the annihilation of our country. Talk about a coflict of interest. President Bro-blah-blah continually shows the American people that his lack of experience in foreign affairs sends our country deeper in harms way with these insane towelhead organizations. Its time we as the American people see that all the campaign promises for change by Bro-blah-blah, have all been for the negative for the United States both at home economically and abroad.

Mytchy. The biggest reason we are sending so much money to Pakistan is to secure transport routes for supplies and fuel for the forces in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a land locked country, the US is using ports in Pakistan and shipping most supplies through Pakistan. If the Pakistanis shutdown the ports or transport routes we can kiss off the war in Afghanistan and just bring the troops home. No supplies and fuel, no war effort.

Did it ever cross your mind that after the raid on Bin Laden exposed once and for all the corruption within certain military circles in Pakistan, that we now have the ability to pressure Pakistan and threaten them with losing that aid unless they step up to the plate and help us find and capture/kill all of these leaders? And that this, combined with the intelligence we discovered in the compound is why we are suddenly able to locate these folks?

I don't like sending money to other countries but you have to look at the bigger picture. If we weren't keeping the current Pakistan government afloat with these payments than the whole country would be up in flames and Al Qaeda would have freedom to roam the whole country. At least now there in check and we are getting them. What did Bush do, attack them for a couple of months than start pulling troops and money from the region and started his own personnal war in Iraq.

There's a big difference between conservatism and extremism. At the risk of judging a person's character based on two lines Ben seems to be the former, rather than the latter. If more conservatives were like John Huntsman perhaps the GOP would be taken more seriously. I'm a liberal but I certainly don't agree with everything that either side has done. I do, however, believe in affording the Office of the President of the United States of American the respect that it is due mo matter who holds the position and that's a line that no one, regardless of political ideology, should cross.

This is because of technology improvements in the drone that have improved significantly over the past few years. It doesn't have to do with Obama, other than that he gives permission, which you may agree both Bush and Cheney had no reservations either. Good news for the U.S.A., not just for one particular presidency.

@W LEwis – I give credit to President Obama for continuing this effort to take out Al Queda, but it would be naive to think that this success was all based on intelligence gathered in just the past 2+ years. This success is obviously based on intelligence gathered over a very long period, not just during the past 2+ years. President Bush Sr. had great success in the first Gulf War, but the economy kept him from re-election in 1992. I believe President Obama will meet a similar fate.

So...from the other replies to this thread, it would seem if we are ever hit with another terrorist attack, or if we don;t have 100% success in Afghanistan, it is Obama's fault. the buck stops with him, and he is the leader of the armed forces.

But if the same forces take out a high-ranking Al Qaeda figure, we are being naive to credit Obama.

It sucks to be the first black president.

LOL. You are too funny. All Obama did was continue what Bush started to the detriment of his own political party. You need to reconsider your views. hahahaha

Pics or it didn't happen. I'd also like to see how many other hostile targets/civilians were slaughtered in the wreckage Uncle Sam.

Well when it gets up there around 3,000 that will even the score on 9/11 and when you add in the 5,000 or so military for a total of 8,000 I would say we have a ways to go before surpassing them. Hey they started this crap not us, we all saw them cheering in the streets, a little weeping in the streets I think just might be in order here.

Now, it seems kind of an advantage to having a thug as the president!

yes..some people were cheering in the streets...that means more innocents have to die.

        MORE MORE DEATH!!!

Good thing you're nothing like those terrorists that want to kill innocent people.

You're a joke and a disgrace to America.

Joe I have the feeling you're taking what people say the wrong way. I know it may be wrong to bomb them, but then again, what would your solution to the problem be?
My own father and his brother died in the WTC attacks on 9/11. I for one, am glad that USA is trying to take down Al Quaeda. We had to do something in retaliation, we cant just sit there and let them attack our country. USA is stronger than that, and when they attack us for such reasons as they have, we not only should but need to take action. Theres a difference between defending our country and 'dropping to the terrorist's level'. It brings me some closure to know that the death of my father and uncle is not going to be overlooked, and to know that our country is out there doing something about it.
Im guessing the attacks didnt affect you on a personal level, but try to look at it through the eyes of those who lost families over it. RIP Dad & Uncle Vinny.

Dropping bombs on third world countries with no army or navy is not going to protect America.

Plus, if you feel it affected you so much...why aren't you fighting the war? Why do you want other people to fight the war for me?

If I believed terrorists killed my family I would be at war fighting them.

Plus, the people that attacked us were from Saudi Arabia, one of our allies. Bombing villages will never bring your loved ones will only cause more pain and death and more retaliation.

I'm sorry about your loss but I hope you can understand that violence is not going to solve anything. We all are taught that from the minute we can crawl.

how dare you not just blindly believe the government! That is so anti-American!

obviously, because you don't take the government's (which always tells the truth, no matter what) word without any evidence, you are with the enemy and you should leave America instantly.

What these idiots don't know is America was built on questioning government and dissent. It's the most patriotic thing you can do.

you're right...why even supply any proof? People like you will believe anything they say anyways, right? Who cares about stupid things about facts, proof and evidence. You're right! We should blindly trust government.

        Great point!

Only someone that hates America would want to see proof before believing the government. I agree.

lol you guys are so brainwashed it's actually kinda funny!
