Al Qaeda advances in Yemen's hidden war

By Nic Robertson, CNN senior international correspondent

Outside al Naqib hospital empty gurneys sit where cars normally park. Al Qaeda’s foot soldiers are less than an hour's drive away. Soon the wounded will arrive.

They are likely to be children, women and old men, caught in the crossfire between government forces and Islamist militants closing in on the city of Aden, the second largest in Yemen.

Like dozens before them, the new casualties will be lifted gingerly from shabby cars, laid flat on the waiting trolleys, rushed to surgery.

With medical students helping them, doctors new to injuries caused by explosives, tank shells, bombs and bullets will struggle to staunch the flow of blood, reconstruct fragmented bones, console the inconsolable.

It’s the waiting in this war that hurts the most.

Most everyone except those responsible can see it coming. A train wreck born out intransigence and political paralysis. A president who after 33 years refuses to step down and a political elite that refuses to stop bickering and step up to save their nation.

As the gurneys bake in the stifling sun, sweaty men crouch in the shade, right cheeks bulging with the leafy stimulant called qat. Little moves save a few beaten cars bumping along slowly, bouncing over the broken hospital road.

Poverty is a byword for life here. Chewing qat passes the time and distances the mind from the numbing reality that Yemen is slipping into chaos.

Half-a-mile away, government tanks sit half-hidden behind piles of boulders, gun barrels protruding like angry antenna bristling at the cars driving nearby.

They’re protecting themselves not from al Qaeda but from the citizens themselves. Every few days the people here, like Yemenis in other cities, rise up in anger, demand a new leader, call for democratic change.

The tanks rumble out, menace the crowd. The heavy machine guns atop their turrets spit out hot rounds in an effort to disperse the protesters.

It’s an ugly stalemate made more complicated by the longings of some to separate South Yemen from the North, like it was before President Ali Abdullah Saleh brought about a forced unification in 1994.

The reasons are many: bitterness over rifled resources, perceptions the north profits from the south’s oil fields fuels, longstanding tribal rivalries. Then there’s the young who just want a better government. And the government, such as it is, stifles them all.

Al Qaeda are nimbly capitalizing on the confusion. Tanks pointing at the people in a high stakes game of crowd control aren’t free to stop the Islamist zealots driving thousands of innocents from their homes as they advance through the surrounding towns.

On the tarmac road that runs along the beach’s edge – snaking up the coast from Aden to Zinjabar – little moves save waves of windborne sand, scattering, drifting, piling. The normally bustling highway is forlorn, almost ghostly. It’s the road to the front line. Ten kilometers out of town and two rusty tanks come in to view.

Anywhere else you’d think they were dead, hulks abandoned, rotting in the corrosive sea breeze.

A couple of soldiers, guns slung haplessly over their shoulders, accost us. What are we doing, don’t we know there is a war up there? We are the only journalists they’ve seen. The government is shelling, they tell us, we’ll be killed if we drive further.

Our conversation is surreal, their red teeth chewing on the livid green qat as they talk. "It lets me stand back from the world," one of the soldiers says.

To drive further is to enter a world where the only certainty is uncertainty, uncharted territory where the world's most feared terror group has progressed from hit and run tactics, ambushes in the middle of nowhere, to taking towns and cities, even setting up their own administration.

Perhaps more people should care about this war on the tip of the Arabian Peninsula. After all this is the country from which the last two serious attempts to export terrorism to the United States originated. Both came close to blowing up planes bound for the United States, one of them minutes from landing in Detroit.

The al Qaeda bomb maker behind those attacks is still on the loose here, although it's unlikely he's down here close to the front-line. But he and al Qaeda can operate with impunity in wide swathes of southern Yemen, among the mountains and ravines. And to some Yemenis, they are fighting a just war; they are men to be honored and protected. This – after all – is Osama bin Laden's ancestral homeland.

As we push our luck, and the soldiers' patience, to be allowed closer, cars, even a bus jammed with people, boxes and household goods lurch through the checkpoint, disappear into the swirling sand and the road to Aden and relative safety.

Tens of thousands have made that journey already. One woman we met as she sought refuge in a dilapidated school in Aden told us her son had gone back to their home in Zinjabar to rescue their last possessions. Young al Qaeda fighters calling themselves Ansar al Sharia or supporters of Islamic law caught him, she said, telling him to go back to Aden and warning him they’ll be there in a few days.

By the accounts of families we met in al Naqib hospital almost no one is left in Zinjabar.

Even the foolhardy and brave who had remained are getting out, as the battles intensify and the causalities mount.

Dozens of government soldiers have been killed and Yemen’s air force is dropping bombs with an apparent callous abandon that’s killing and maiming the very civilians it can only be assumed they are aiming to protect.

The train wreck has arrived. The only problem, very few people know it because access to this remote corner of a remote country is so hazardous. This is a government that has imploded and al Qaeda is filling an ever growing vacuum.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

Muslim clerics (ayatollahs, muftis, ullemas, mullahs, imans, sheiks, etc) supported by Isalmic monarchies and leaders are responsible for the violence, hatred, terrorism, resentment and discrimination around the world. Thanks to Islam, Muslim monarchs -as opposed to European monarchs- have absolute power, they can appropriate for themselves their countries natural resources (oil) and wealth, these Anti-Christ disciples have harems with hundreds of concubines and the worst sexual aberrations. In addition, they can free or incarcerate anyone without questioning and always have the last word on any kind of decision. No wonder they must spread and impose Islam in their countries and eventually around the world otherwise they risk losing all their privileges. Salman Rushdie was right when he named his book "The Satanic Verses" ...of the Quran.

Thats EXACTLY what Nato is doing in Libya with between 1000 and 1500 civilians confirmed killed by our "freedom Bombs" over there.
An even sadder thing is that after Libya and maby Siera,Nato is off to Yamen and Saudi. The Globalists agenda marches on to choke oil supplies, jack the price sky high at the same time second wave depression and Dollar crises hits the US.

    Tough times to come.

People need to read Yemeni news and get the real story. When are people going to learn that the gov't. controls what is released in the news? And when are people going to learn that it is the elites who make money off of war who control the gov't.? Next up, WWIII...I guess people will then put their heads in the sand when they are told they can survive it by doing that.

No, Hunter, NATO in Libya is dropping its bombs on the thugs of a brutal dictator who has oppressed his people for over 40 years. Saleh, in Yemen, is the dictator, and he, Saleh, is bombing his own people. In Libya, the dictator, Khaddafi, is being punished by NATO, for continuing to oppress his people. Hunter, do you see the difference? That difference actually is quite clear and simple.

yes alqeada has been expanded in the southern of Yemen, what we want from the regime and the American forces to remove them from the southern part of yemen in order for yemeni residents in the south to live peacefully .if the yemeni army which is cooperated with the amerfican forces don't put an end to gunmen suspected of alqeada acts they will stretch more and more and it will be difficult for government to stop them and that would create a fear of the united state

yemen is a frigging mess either way. a couple of months back, national geographic ran a profile about the country. the legal age of marriage there is 8 (for girls). all girls are married by 20. the average family has seven kids. girls wear face veils and do not work or travel outside the home. most men are unemployed. a perfect match for al qaeda's philosophy.

US politics is all about supremacy of US over rest of the world. Reflect on some of the past elections and you will see that terror issues were raised right at the tome of elections. US politicians are banking on the religious divide and scare of Islamic terrorist for the sake of winning elections. Most of the politicians in the US are power hungry, selfish and immoral. The US system justifies their actions if it is in the interest of their own country but if another country wants to justify use of technology for their own interest, they are put under sanctions.

With all of its folliws, the USA is still a beacon of hope for most freedom loving countries. The freedom we enjoy, in every day life to choose religion or none at all, freedom of expression, freedom of clothing, freedom of music, art etc etc are NOT free. Freedom is NOT free. It never was and never will be 'For Free'. AlQueda and thier brothern are just like the Nazis, and they will go to any extent to kill people of all faith becuse they have a broken and brainwashed mind trained to kill and die killing all others. A mind without compassion or other valeus that makes us Humans. Just ask any 'freedom loving person' in Pakistan, Afganisthan, India , Iran, Iraq, Turkey if they would like to live under AlQueda/Taliban.

All this fear of terror justifies Americas wars. The wars will never end; the major weapons companies want to be prosperous because that's where the Bush's make their money... Ali Mohssin has been sending fighters to Abyan. I have many friend from Mareb and Arhab north of Sanaa and Amran to fight the gov. forces. There are Saudis and other nationalities fighting with Alqaeda. Al Assiri killed today he is a Saudi and alqaeda leader. They want to control Abyan to form what they call Aden Abyan Army ( an idea was first introduced early 90's when they attacked a hotel in Aden that hosted foreigners). Mr. mohssin suprovised the north east parts of yemen which is also the Yemen Saudi border area. The North Eastern side is supervised by the other commander Mohamed Ali Mohssin who joined also the Revelation with Ali Mohssi control and supervises the north eastern area that borders Saudi Arabia. During the last 7 years, They used to host al qaeda members who flee from Saudi and hide them within some tribes that accept. Since than they have been hitting the tourism industry and oil facilities to discourage foreign direct investment and the inflow of tourists. Two reasons for doing that 1) they are considered to be passionate with the Islamest groups 2) they were in a silent war with the president by destroying the economy which later led to the uprising. Why? they want power and satisfy their belief's and the people who are around them and influenced by them greatly.

when are you people at CNN going to stop lying to the american people by claiming that the revolts in egypt and Lybia and Tunisia are because of democracy? the folks in Yemen didnt even try to hide their allegiances by claiming they were revolting for democracy, and that has thrown a monkey wrench in nato's illegal war in Lybia.

it has just been announced on REPUTABLE news sites that al-qaeda has launched an attack on the govt of Mauritania in africa. and so far ALL of the weapons that have been captured from the al-qaeda terrorist in that attack came from LYBIA!!

nato will never get away with the crimes that they are committing in Lybia because their new allies from al-qaeda will muck it up for them.

  49. Jeshurun

Hi folks and peace unto you in the name of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. My name is Jeshurun. It has been given to me by God. The Lord has ordained me as one of two end of days witnesses (prophets). In November 2007 God called me. The Lord led me into the mountains of Washington state: before God was done with me I found myself walking down a body of water dragging the soles of my slippers along the stones; close to the end of this walk were two witnesses and their dogs; at the end of this walk I was instructed to say this, "it is done". These three words appear twice in the book of Revelation. I did not know that then. The walk lasted from sunrise until sunset. The walk is biblical. May 24 2011 the abomination of desolation was set up. On July 11 2011 blessing will be received. The beast spoken of in the book of Revelation will arise out of Iran. I have less then one week left with you all if you are getting this far in this comment then take heed the words may be meant for you. Go to youtube; under search type in my name "Jeshurun"; go to sort by and change this to upload date: Scroll down until you find me, you will know when you are correct. Folks time is running out. You out there that have have Jesus Christ in your hearts and in your lifes are going to fare these times just fine. Refuse to step off this solid foundation no matter what is thrown at you refuse to be removed. If they start hating you refuse to hate them back, but instead pay back good for evil; continue in your faith and press into the word of God. If you do not have Jesus in your lifes and you have not shut me out already then hear closely to me. Time is coming to a close it is not long now. I ask of you no I beg of you seek out Christ. He is not far from any of us. He is quick to hear and quick to heal; ask him into your hearts and he will not let you down. He loves you and he will not forsake you. Everyone around you including your own family may forsake you, but Jesus will not ever! If you out there refuse to believe in God and his Christ I am so very very sorry but you have been deceived and being such you are reserved for the day of God's wrath. I ask you to remember this. God is never far off; cry out his name and believe in your hearts and you will be saved..walk in Christ...I love you all, God loves you more..watch and pray always..our redemption is at the doors..

Nice try though.

you my friend are a fool, plain and simple, so you say the cia are the ones who blew up the world trade center, doubtful to say the least, the cia is so far away form anything american, those people live their whole lives in remote parts of the world while the rest of america enjoys the comforts of their lives – if any government agency was going to plot something it would be the nsa – they are the domestic cia if i am not mistaken but no one in the government is going to kill that many people, it would simply risk too much of a good thing, you really think any senator is willing to risk what america is for a dollar, it is "prepostourous" to even think so – america would uterly collapse, if you look at america and its history you will note that we never start the killing, saddam was not for oil, it was pure stupidity that surfaced from 911 hate, the usa is still bent on killing an arab fundamentalist and we will until they are all dead, they took life away from the innocent to start if i remember right, the usa is all about peace but the modern day spartans push back when pushed

newhopebo Think about it. If there is no protection people form gangs (like in inner cities in the US). In these countries, they form gangs around ethnic groupings (Tribes). This is not about Islam or Mecca, except that the Saudi royalty tribe controls the holy sites. BTW, pilgramage is a requirement for all believers in Islam, so to control the monuments in Mecca is to have a lot of power and wealth. Oil is just a side business.

    This articule is pure entertainment:
" a political elite that refuses to stop bickering and step up to save their nation." There is no nation in Yemen (or anywhere else in the middle east / gulf states, including Israel). This is Tribalism. The idea 'nation' is foreign (literally, a western thought) to these people. All the best to them as they battle it out until the best tribe wins. Then that tribe brutally oppresses the other tribes, skims off all weath and resources and jobs. This is not rocket science.

And the more we meddle to make them bigger oil producers, and to make them allies, the more we will seem like evil interlopers in a place we don't belong and that might unite them into one big tribal legion (at best) against us. Sounds like a bad idea and it is but this is what we are doing in afghanistan (they don't want our big pipelines crossing over their farmlands). Why not yemen too? Actually I just wish we'd stay out of the whole Middle East and let them grow up by themselves. Instead of $400 billion a year plus an unmeasurable cost in lives, supporting our undeclared wars, we should try to mind our business (which our government has totally forgotten about) and try to just set an example of how democracy works. If we can't get it together here, with our humongous debt and disintegrating educational system and our stupid tax incentives granted for sending more jobs over seas when we need them here, then I doubt we can make it work for them.

War against Al Qaeda will never be end, Al Qaeda is just a symbol, actually they are billions peoples of all Islamic nations, from Afghanistan to Irag, from Yemen to Lybia, at least most of them. Just consider the fact, how could Osama bin Laden & few other Arabic millionaires afford such a ceaseless fight with the America led westren world, someone would say they have billions of money, come on man, maybe the so called billions just enough for one year if were not frozen by USA, ten years sound like a joke. It's a conflict of religious, conflict of resources, some people called it the continueous of crusade. The superficially good relationship with America is not from the deep heart of most Islamic government, what democracy, vote, in fact is nothing to them, just think, which of those countries would offer a hand if a life-and-death catastrophe befall to America. Different social stage need different policy, the existing democratic system of western world has be developed & improved for thousands of years since Rome era, and every wisdom people admite it's superiority, but however it's not the right cure at present for many countries where the conception of people were not at the same level.
So the war will not be end if USA continue to push the present policy. But there must be some way to solve the conflict, either drop the bit stick, offer only carrot, or just kill them all, Muslims, Buddhist, and other heretics, men & women, old & young.

"a political elite that refuses to stop bickering and step up to save their nation". That seems to be a universal description, not least of all here in the U.S.

As far as the comment about the middle east encroaching on the rest of the world.... sorry but don't you mean Europe? Russia? China? The U.S.? There hasn't been a massive Arab-run empire in hundreds of years. The Ottomans were Turks, not Arabs. I really can't see any truth in that assertion.

Sick of it all: don't take it personally, or you won't make it. These people do not hate us any more than they hate each other. Its a hate fest, based on blood lines and tribal bonds. In times of change, they jockey for position as the new oppressive tribe. The winning tribe keeps all the weath, jobs, power, women....until the next upheaval. Nothing to do with Islam either, except that each tribe has its own intrepretation of Islam.

In some ways I think that in the long run it would be better for Al Qaeda to gain control of a country or two. At the moment Yemen is concentrating on the government and the US as the enemy. Perhaps a few years of horrific rule by the most brutal people in the world will help unite them. Unfortunately in the west we tend to think short term and to try bully our way in to their strongholds, while stomping all over the sovereignty of other nations, which only raises sympathy to whomever is willing to fight the west. As Al Qaeda grows they will eventually make themselves the enemy of the region and the people. Only the people in those countries can fight Al Qaeda. The west may have to suffer in the short run, but it's the long term that needs to be addressed.

Hey Lilly, it doesn't matter who comes out on top, it will be horrific for someone. Taliban, Qaida, the 'democratic' president just another way to say 'my tribe' versus 'your tribe'. There is no multicultural mingling in these countries. The West just has to be careful to exert enough influence on the 'winning tribe' so that they won't host international training camps to kill westerners.

What a shocker. Humans killing each other. The only thing we have been truly good at since the beginning of time. It will be our undoing. Wars over fictional entities, meaningless riches, he said she said. I am 28 and believe I will live to see our race destroy ourselves. I have lost all hope. This senseless hate will only grow. The planet is better off, no the universe, is better off without us.

But the human population continues to grow and grow and grow. I guess it will take more than some little tribal war in some piss-ant country to wipe us out. Take heart, there is much beauty in the world.
