Ukraine impasse stirs U.S.-Russia tensions

By Elise Labott

Tensions between the United States and Russia over the crisis in Crimea have exploded into an open row as Russia rejects U.S. diplomatic efforts to solve the impasse.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry postponed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss American proposals, which Moscow has effectively rejected, on solving the crisis.

The meeting, which Russia said was supposed to happen Monday, would have marked the highest-level contact between the two countries since Russian troops took up positions in Crimea, and would have come ahead of Sunday's potentially explosive vote on whether Crimea should split from Ukraine and join Russia.

Has any one thought the Russian maybe using Ukraine as a cover up for moving forces north of Canada to take hold of the North Pole? Canada and the US should take a joint Venture or have Canada go to the UN and make the North Canadian or US soil before the Russians send thousands of troops their and seize it and call it their own. By saying make me leave like they did in Ukraine.

  6. i dont know....

the us is coming out of 2 wars, ME is even more turbulent than normal...Obama's administration is walking a fine line at home and abroad ....

Add in a Totalitarian Plutocrat with that notorious Russian bravado....and you have the situation in the Ukraine.. but something isn't adding up...I cant put a finger on it, but it seems to be a massive con being played on the world at large.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out at a later date that many of our elite are helping (helped) Putin engineer this whole thing......all hail the almighty dollar.

Former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, addressing thousands of people at the cradle of the uprising against Ukraine's Moscow-backed leader, accused Russia on Sunday of being complicit in police violence against protesters.

To chants of "Russia, rise up", Khodorkovsky, who was jailed for a decade under President Vladimir Putin, told the crowd the Kremlin was lying to its own people by portraying the protesters as "neo-fascists" bent on violence.

Wearing a simple dark anorak and jeans, he addressed the crowd from a stage in Kiev's Independence Square, occupied by protesters since November despite police trying to oust them with force which resulted in about 100 deaths.

"I have been shown what the authorities did here. They did this in agreement with the Russian authorities – more than 100 dead, more than 5,000 wounded," Khodorkovsky told the crowd, who waved back with Ukrainian flags.

I love the way CNN portrays President Obama working fastidiously on this crisis at his desk when in reality he has been deep sea fishing and golfing in the Florida keys. All the while, Putin remains focused on the task at hand to meet his goals. It is so obvious the result of this confrontation. Russia 1, USA 0.

At 2 a.m. this morning an unmarked transport plane was on the runway at Borispol Airport. According to airport staff, before the plane came to the airport, four trucks and two Volkswagen minibuses arrived, all the truck license plates missing.
Fifteen people in black uniforms, masks, and body armor stepped out, some armed with machine guns. They loaded the plane with more than 40 heavy boxes.
After that a mysterious men arrived and entered the plane.
All loading was done in a hurry.
The plane took off on an emergency basis.
Those who saw this mysterious special operation immediately notified the airport officials, who told the callers not to meddle in other people's affairs.
Later a returned call from a senior official of the former Ministry of Income and Fees reported that tonight, on the orders of one of the new leaders of Ukraine, the United States had taken custody of all the gold reserves in Ukraine.

ALL the gold reserves? How little gold did the Ukraine have? Gold is rarely moved because of its weight and ease of disposal. However, I can easily believe the Ukrainian treasury was raided of its currency.

I suggest we shut up and leave the Ukraine and Crimea alone. It is not our affair. The US involvement in other countries affairs has only led to more problems and expense. Stay out of it!

Marty-History demonstrates that appeasement to dictators like Putin will only encourage further expansionism. They see compromise as a sign of weakness and an unwillingness to get tough.Neville Chamberlin claimed he achieved peace in our time with Nazi Germany. Instead of peace in our time we got WW II.Although Russia signed a pledge to guarantee Ukraine's territorial integrity if they in return gave up their nuclear weapons, Putin broke that pledge because he thought he could get away with it. I am sure that you know Alaska was Russian territory in the mid 1800s.We bought it thinking that we had an iron-clad contract. Perhaps we need rethink how reliable dictators are in keeping their word. Bye bye Alaska if we don't.

Barack Obama comes far closer to being like Hitler than Vladimir Putin. After all, it was Obama who wanted to bomb Damascus last summer with Tomahawk missiles, B-2 and B-52 bombers when Vladimir Putin managed talk him out of it. Please Hugh, get your facts straight!

Really hoping this can be resolved with out violence. It seems like especially today people always turn to means of violence rather than just working it out in a civil manner.

“If some humans manage to survive and further evolve for another 1,000 or 5,000 years or so years, I fear these descendents of us will find our bones buried beneath the rubble of fallen buildings. I fear they will find our present civilization scattered amongst the ruins of war.

Our more evolved descendents will examine the legacy of our 21st century beliefs, crimes, wars and accomplishments. They will measure the size and slope of our foreheads, then probably define us as relatively primitive predators. They will realize we still tried to solve disagreements and gain influence and territories by violence. The evidence of this will be abundant.”
