Senators propose new Iran sanctions bill, White House opposed

CNN Chief National Security Correspondent Jim Sciutto

Bipartisan legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate on Thursday that would authorize new economic sanctions on Iran if it breaches an interim agreement to limit its nuclear program or fails to strike a final accord terminating those ambitions.

The proposal led by by Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, and Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, emerged despite Obama administration appeals for Congress to defer pursuing new sanctions with diplomatic efforts ongoing.

Didnt the Iranians walk away from the table again after wasting everyone's time, like they have always done? The learned that from the north Koreans. Play a game, get something then do what you want while threading war.

I dont think it will matter what we do.

If Iranians , the real ones, like I am a real american and not a suit, if Iranians are seriously willing to stop pursuing national pride threw nuclear weapons , then it will happen. Nothing should happen until we have accepted war with Iran as the alternative. The second we decide this is not working we will need to either strike down their program or accept being nuked. That is what the breakout time means. We simply don't have the time cushion to play more sanctions games. They only need to last 1-4 weeks to break out.

As long as anything you do at this point goes into play AFTER we make that decision I think it is irrelevant. I think pressing it into action now and publicly threatening it risks what ever chance of this working there is. I also think it is about a 5% chance it works. And that is being generous.

The politicians need to understand the game of chicken we are in. Israel, and US are determined not to allow them to get weapons. This works, or the alternative HAS to be done. You have to physically go and destroy the program. Sanctions failed. Now you have 1-4 weeks to do it too.

Any Senator that is behind this bill is basically saying that they are not interested in any sort of diplomatic solution. They only want war with Iran. I guess the war machine needs more cash.

Good grief Ron, you must be another clueless Tea Partier. Just where will Iran get the money to pay out all these "bribes" that you're talking about? The Politics of Hunger is meant to starve Iran into submission as well as other countries. It was tried on Iraq between 1991 to 2003 when the invasion took place. In fact, it has become a staple part of U.S. foreign policy!!!

Load them up with new sanctions, the old ones aren't working. They must kneel down and ask for mercy, and abandon all their nuclear programs.

They have a right to a nuclear program, just not a military one. If you're going to force them to give up civilian nuclear activities because your afraid they'll turn it into a military program, are american civilians going to give up their guns...just in case they use them for criminal activities?

Lies, hyporicy and deception are the bread and butter of the US, Britain, and Israel.

British (lies): "we are heree to help you arabs in getting rid of the occupation by the turks/ottomans so you can be free" turns to divying up the mideast with French using borders they picked, decades of occupation of the mideast, and the installation of dictators and kings.

US (hypocricy): "we are a beacon of light, we stand for rights and freedoms, others are brutal and evil. saddam tortured people so he's bad." we find out that US soldiers arre torturing prisoners, (they are just a few bad apples!), then a US policy to torture shows up (these are enhanced interrogation techniiques, not torture, promise!)

Israeli (deception): "its true that we have been uprooting entire palestinian farms, demolishing palestinian homes, only providing building permits to jews, blockinging the return of palestinian refugees who fled when we took this land by force, illegally expanding into occupied territory, our citizens yell death to arabs, placing an embargo on things as innocent as crayons, harrassing palestinians at every checkpoint, imprisoning kids for throwing rocks, shooting at palestinian protestors, protecting jews who harass palestinians and vandalize palestinian property BUT no there is no program or aim of getting rid of as many palestinians as possible. we have reasons for each of these things. the fact they seem to point to one thing is just a coincidence.

Even the dems are standing against obama.. it doesn't take a genius to see that sanctions need to be re-instated.. only problem is the damage has already been done.. many countries have thrown money towards Iran already

Have you looked at the economic growth numbers this month? Makes you wonder who the sanctions were really hurting the most, the US and global economy or Iran? More oil in the market means economic growth for Europe and the states. thirty years of sanctioning Iran and they have grown their economy and built their infra structure better than all the countries in the ME. It is naive to think that thirty years more will somehow bring them to their knees. I think this is an opportunity to extend the hand of friendship to the new ME superpower and do ourselves some good.

.... Iran and they have grown their economy?!

Are you joking? The supreme leader and his military got all the Iranian money to get richest persons in the country with billions of dollar wealth form occupied people properties to make bomb and rocket.
Most of not regime related Iranian must work 20 Hours per day to pay off their bills.
They spent money to make more prisons for students and lawyers that are tired of middle century dictatorship regime.
They paid millions of dollars to the Hezbolah and other extremist groups.
Only more sanctions can bring them to their knee and shut down the nuclear facilities.
