McCaul: TSA, law enforcement need better coordination

By CNN's Joe Sterling and Jason Seher

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said Sunday that Transportation Security Administration officers at the nation's airports need to work better with local law enforcement to help prevent incidents like Friday's shooting at Los Angeles International Airport.

"The coordination with the local police is key because, remember, TSA officers are not armed," the Texas Republican told CNN's Candy Crowley on "State of the Union."

In the wake of the shooting at LAX's Terminal 3 – where a gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia, killed a TSA officer and wounded three other people – McCaul said he had already referred his suggestions to TSA Administrator John Pistole.

We have all stood at the lines in airports across America when the kids starts to scream and the TSA agents are doing their best to keep us safe, and to answer our questions in a timely fashion. TSA agents have a tough job protecting America's airports and safe guarding from home grown terrorism and keeping drugs and illegal immigrant's of our streets. Just like US Custom's and Immigration officers TSA have a dangerous job and sometimes they give their own lives, so we can travel the friendly sky's across America and the world so we must provide our TSA with the best possible training for them, and as American travelers we should thank the TSA and US Customs and Immigration officers from their hard work and keeping us safe for the many years to come as we fly on family vacation trips in America for years to come.

    1. Be faster to declare all clear,
    2. spread out assets

This exposed two big problems. The assets were all grouped together. They made an easy target.
It lasted too long, across to great of an area. As an attack it was effective. The other gates could have been reopened sooner, once everyone knew to evac alertness was heightened. The focus could have been to re-assert normal ops asap. Instead officers slowly cleared rooftops, as a heli watched and everyone at home knew no one was there. All in all nice response. Definitely room for improvement.

It's good you kept people safe and contained them, but a better plan might be what I call the coliseum plan. Once you know there is a problem, you have two options contain or release. I question if release, would have been cleaner once you decided to close down the airport. At that point your best move is to usher people out as fast as possible, much the same as things would have been at the coliseum after a show. Had there been a situation there well you know where Im going with this, I dont intend on giving ideas as sinister as this one out. How this was handled was not smart and we can be thankful for a chance to improve before it matters. It was an impressive show of force yet the reaction did more damage than the attack , if you dont count the few personally affected. Sorry if I seem cold for excluding them. As grand as the response was it was questionably effective , especially had it been an active situation instead of a guy on a rampage.
