CIA-funded weapons begin to reach Syrian rebels

CIA-funded weapons have begun flowing to Syrian rebels, a U.S. official told CNN late Wednesday night.

The official confirmed details first reported by the Washington Post but would not speak publicly.

"That is something we are not going to dispute, but we are not going to publicly speak to it," the official said.

The weapons are not American-made, but are funded and organized by the CIA. They started to reach rebels about two weeks ago, the official said.

The artillery provided were described as light weapons, some anti-tank weapons and ammunition.

The supply is in addition to the non-lethal aid that the United States has been providing the rebels since April, when the Obama administration first altered the nature of the aid to include items such as body armor, night vision goggles and other military equipment.

The CIA doesn't have any money! They are using my money and your money on this foreign civil war. Congress should be impeached for letting them waste our hard earned money.

When your son, daughter, brother, sister, mother, or father comes home in a body bag from an overseas deployment, be sure to send a letter to the White House thanking the Presidents of now back to the Reagan era.

Weapons are NOT the problem, it is the sick and satanic Islamic mentality. It is more effective to send Muslims an army of Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons and Hare Krishna to try to domesticate these animals.

While it does not surprise me that the GOP would agree to send these barbarians weapons, it really surprises me that all the democrats are all gung-ho about it. If it weren't so scary that the USA is arming terrorists that will attack us one day, it would almost be funny.

Here you have a President and a large anti-gun following mostly among the democrats that try every trick they can to disarm the American citizen while simultaneously giving RPGs, machine guns, missiles, assault rifles, and other very powerful weapons to aid and comfort the evil foreign enemies of America.

Could we have a little sanity restored and agree to either:

    A) Stop trying to gut the 2nd amendment for Americans
    OR
    B) Stop giving the treacherous and barbaric Rebels/AQ weapons that Americans are not even allowed to possess

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

I can't help but wonder why we don't give them U.S. made weapons. If I am paying to arm them anyway, why not at least keep the jobs and money here to the extent that we can. This is not a comment about whether it is right to arm them, but if that decision has been made, I see no scenario where the U.S. is better off either militarily or economically in the long run by arming them with foreign made weapons versus U.S. made weapons.

Probably the best reason is plausible deniability. Say a rebel attack kills civilians and the UN wants to search for the parties responsible, They would start with the type of weapon used and the country of origin.

Giving them foreign weapons, generally Russian / former Warsaw Pact type from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, is also about training. Syrian armament has been Russian for 50 years - the rebels are getting equipment they know how to use with minimal training.

When are we ever going to learn. Giving these people weapons is the same as pointing them at ourselves eventually. We shouldn't give these people anything but tazers and paint filled artillery.

We as Americans have a 2nd amendment right to allow the arms makers to make big bucks selling arms to the world cause everybody has a god given right to have a gun to shoot someone of a different religion, race, or political persuasion.

Vass, surely you're are kidding? These weapons are going into the hands of extremists. They'll turn on us first chance they get. In fact, many of them are already anti-American. This is completely idiotic.

Great,... Now that diplomatic efforts are under way to resolve the Syrian crisis we start shipping in arms courtesy of the greatest coup creating agency in the world, the CIA. Yeah, someday there will be an alliance nations that will come at us directly for our arrogance and dominating behaviors around the world, and not through some Middle Eastern, Asian, or European country. When the rest of the world stands by and watches the US get pounded on multiple fronts, then they'll say "See, modern warfare on your own continent isn't much fun is it?

The story on the Putin Op Ed piece in the NYT had a serious administration slant to it. I like the part where twitter's (probably agency staff) tried to dredge up a 1999 OP Ed piece about the Chechnya conflict Russia dealt with and tried to make parallels. It's pure apples and oranges. Chechnya was a former Soviet State. A comparative would be like if Texas seceded from the US and was divided into separate regions or republics, then the US wanted to reclaim one of those regions or republics. It would be an internal conflict. Chechnya was the same way. The Russians went to war with the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, one of several Chechen republics. It was an internal conflict, and although the UN sent Peace Keepers, they did not have full diplomatic recognition as a country because the world still recognized them as a former state.

My point is I thought the piece was well written and was spot on as far as American Exceptionalism goes. We are all citizens of the same planet, and whatever diety you worship, no one is any more exceptional than anyone else. Thinking like that helped in large part to create the Holocaust as Germany thought their people were exceptional to all other peoples, especially the Jews.

What is not being discussed is Israel's opinion of their idea that they are MORE exceptional than anyone else, after all they are God's "chosen people"! Israel is staying very quiet today, for a reason!!! Bebe even told his own people to "keep quiet"!
Israel firmly has itself convinced that they are MORE exceptional than anyone else and has made their case with all members of our US Congress. Israel is free to go bulldoze the homes of "unexceptional" people at their whim! They can lob white phosphorous bombs (illegal) on "unexceptional" people with impunity (just as cruel as using gas!). Who cries "foul"? Certainly not America!
When the current "talks" between Israel and Palestine fails (and it will), we Americans must reassess our relationship with Israel! As an American, Israel truly irritates me!

I totally agree. Israel has nukes, a battle hardened Army, Navy & Air Force (which by the way they used against a US ship USS Liberty in 1967 with NO Repercussions) and plenty of money. They need to be removed from the pedestal that America has placed them on. They can stand on their own, and proved it against Egypt and others. (America's super secret help not withstanding) I just think it's time for Israel to fend for Israel.

you got it wrong,I am sick and tired from uneducated individual claiming that their taxes are going to supportmiddil eastren countries, wake up, America is not paying for any of that, the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia paid for both wares on irag in addition American companies that employee hundreds of Americans got preferential treatment as far as contracts, same happen in Libya so you need to read carefully, because this is mentioned in the US news as well as world news, but the difference is that the say it only once.and donot repeat it so that they actually want you to believe that America is paying so that they can raise your taxes,

your simple mind don't understand war games. No matter what rebels get from US, their war with Syria is not going to be casualty free; I am sure both sides are going to fight until the last man is standing. That saves money on drones, which is a huge saving compared to providing few guns.
