Members of Congress split over Syria decision

By CNN's Ashley Killough

Lawmakers were divided Sunday on whether to support President Barack Obama's call for military action in Syria.

Obama announced Saturday he believes the United States should take limited action, but he pledged to seek approval from Congress first.

Supporters of a military strike said Sunday the U.S. must send a message to Syria and other countries that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated. Opponents argued the U.S. should pursue more diplomatic channels rather than position itself in yet another overseas military conflict.

Our "elected members of Congress" had better pay attention to the opinion polls!
We, who keep them in office, are dead set against starting another war!
No one in the government nor military can guarantee "No boots on the ground"! This is simply smoke! When our proposed "limited, punitive" attacks takes place and all hell breaks out, what happens then? BOOTS ON THE GROUND!
Russia and Iran will quickly replace anything we destroy. Will we have the guts to block Russia's naval base in Syria? Will we shoot down Russian and Iranian cargo planes flying into Syria? If you have never seen one, Russia has huge cargo planes capable of landing on "less than ideal" runways. We will not stop any resupply effort! This talk of "punitive" attacks is a fools mission! Obviously, Obama knows something about this, so he makes it the decision of Congress! Our members of Congress are not very wise people! They will get us into another big mess, guaranteed!

    @George Patton
It took days to find out what was used. The gas that was used can be made by anyone or group that has the resources to do so. They can't even say who used it. As we all know the terrorist have been launching missiles for a long time at innocent people. Their is not enough to justify targeting the Syrian government.

As the true George patton here, I totally agree with you and I don't fall for Obama's phony story about the Assad regime using such weapons nor for his phony outrage over it! The bottom line is that he wants to take over Syria any way he can!!!

Now I see on CNN TV that Russia is sending a delegation of lawmakers to the US for discussions with members of Congress. (Why is CNN.COM not reporting this – always late!)
This is our chance to make Syria Russia's problem, not ours! Russia needs to step up to the plate and take control of their buddy, Assad! What do we, the US, have to gain by attacking Syria? NOTHING! We don't even know who many of these "rebels" really are. Some are our sworn enemies!
I welcome the Russians here, let's hear what they have to say. What do they propose to do about Syria?
After "liberating" Iraq from Saddam, we got nothing in return. We can't keep making these huge mistakes!

Since France has already occupied Syria from 1919 to 1941, Stan, why not make it France's problem? If the French President is so adamant on getting rid of al-Assad, then tell him to do it himself!

Okay, if France is willing to go back in and re-colonize Syria I'm all for it! Today, Syria is Russia's friend and Iran's friend. These two need to solve this! The US has no business in Syria – NONE! They can go on killing each other forever, it is still not OUR problem! We, the US, told China to make NK shut up. After realizing they a huge economic risk, China finally did it! Today, NK is very quiet. Someone in China set them straight! Oh sure, it will happen again but now China understands that NK is their problem, NOT ours! Likewise, Syria is the problem child of Russia and Iran! Let them deal with it!

We, the USA, do not need to get involved in Syria's problems!!! Syria is Russia's and Iran's friend. These two need to solve this! What gain is there for us to get involved? STAY OUT OF SYRIA!
Of course our Congress will do whatever Israel demands. Congress just loves Israel, and Israel would love to see us attack Syria. Attacking Syria would bring Iran into play! This is Israel's goal. Attack Syria, then have a good reason to attack Iran! Israel has been begging us to do this for years! Fortunately, Obama has resisted. He doesn't trust Israel! But our Congress is simply in love with Israel and will do whatever they want!

I completely agree with u, we should not get involved in Syria. We need to stop thinking that we are the police force of the world. Help the referees as much as possible. Do not supply weapons to the rebels, we don't really know who they are.
These people have been killing each other for thousands of years and NOTHING we do will change that. Let the gutless United Nations handle it, that is what they were created for.

This upcoming vote on the war on Syria will clearly display whom all the elite party bosses and their puppets are. Pay close attention to this vote people, this will be the Guide of Who To Vote Out of Office in 2014, 2016, and beyond. If these War Pigs are going to vote to make America lose lives, treasure, and freedoms then we need to vote to make those politicians lose their careers. The political elite have been in office for far too long and have become far too dangerous to the country for the People to keep voting according to the Two Party Scam. Party is irrelevant these days, it's more about who has been in power for far too long.

The vote WILL be overwhelmingly to attack Syria! Mark my words!

Obama's decision to let the Congress debate a military strike on Syria is brilliant. Where all chance of a surprise attack is lost.....the idea of any eventual attack, will force Assad's military to keep one eye on the sky for "incoming" missiles, making their battle plans against the opposition at a minimum very chaotic!. Plus it's time for congress to put up or just shut up.

Saw most TV talks shows and it a switcheroo role time. The liberal Democrats are now the war mongers and the Republicans are now the peaceniks. President Obama who in his campaign for President said that he was going to use negotiations as a way to resolve issues and attack a country is unacceptable. It seems the parties have had a 180 degree change of heart these days.

Are we in a parallel universe? Total off in their traditional roles. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid calling for Syria to be attacked. Both were strong anti-war and spend much effort in blocking military funding for both Vietnam and limiting military spending on weapon systems. Just cannot believe this!

What flip flop? The top level Dems and top level GOP since the Bush Era have consistently voted for war, voted against freedom, and have spent money like no others before them. This my friend is not a flip-flop but is merely business as usual. The top level GOP supports this stuff too, don't be decieved. Only the young upstarts of both parties that actually want to help America have spoken out against the wars, the domestic spying, the frivolous spending, etc. Don't lose hope cause the young upstarts are taking over both parties at pretty decent pace, so this is very heartening news for America as it gives us the hope of restoring the nation.

The leaders of both parties and the members that have been in office for well over a decade are the main problem. They are both secretly allied and the dem vs gop thing is just a hoax to play stupid people against eachother and ensure that viable candidates do not threaten the power of the long established corrupted elite of both parties.
