Key U.S. lawmakers: Expect strike in Syria

Two key members of congressional foreign affairs panels say they expect the United States to strike Syria following reports of chemical weapons attacks in that country last week, though other lawmakers interviewed Sunday cautioned that unilateral action would be misguided.

"I think we will respond in a surgical way and I hope the president, as soon as we get back to Washington, will ask for authorization from Congress to do something in a very surgical and proportional way. Something that gets their attention, that causes them to understand that we are not going to put up with that kind of activity," Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday."

if chemical weapon use is a crime against humanity, then what is the US guilty of?Whatever the justification-–WW1Xylyl bromide,Chlorine, Phosgene, Chloromethyl chloroformate, Trichloromethyl chloroformate, Chloropicrin, Stannic chloride, Ethyl iodoacetate, Bromoacetone, Hydrogen cyanide, Hydrogen sulfide, (Sulphuretted hydrogen), Mustard gas, --

    WW2--mustard gas
and/or by use of Carbonylchlorid, COCl, atomic bombs-–
    Korean war-–

    bombs containing disease-carrying insects and
    food.--
    Vietnam war--agent orange--
    gulf war/Iraq invasion--depleted uranium----

Well put, sparks2000. Thank you. Yes, and don't forget about the dastardly U.S. bombing back in 1991 of the Amriya air raid shelter in Baghdad in which more than 414 civilians, mostly women, children and the elderly were most mercilessly slaughtered, for openers! We Americans are truly guilty about a lot of things so we are hardly in a moral position to chastise others!

WWI-Every one was using them and we came late to the game. They were made Illegal in 22 I believe.
WWII- We didn't use Chem weps, they were for retaliation only. Atomic bombs were "conventional" at that time at least and not illegal. Still aren't by the way/, just unacceptable. Also they didn't destroy any thing that wasn't going to be destroyed if the war had lasted longer.
Vietnam- Agent Orange was a defoliant with unintended side effects. We couldn't even use CS to get the VC out of the tunnels. Napalm them into crispy critters sure, but NO gas!

Mostly this boils down to the reason your parents didn't let you burn your self on a hot pan. Because they made that mistake and don't want you to make the same one also.

For the right-wing thugs in Washington, that will be on the 12th of Never! These creeps intend to keep this country at war indefinitely so these politicians can promote their careers and the war profiteers can further line their pockets! These people put absolutely no value on the lives of others, only their own! Eventually, if things don't change in Washington, this country will collapse!

and is supported by fundimental change in that region which does not get outside of peoples comfort zones

This is a very murky situation unfolding. I agree that Assad having chemical weapons is unacceptable as he has all ready used them. However, if America/NATO chooses to intervene we have to be careful how we intervene. Remember the rebels are no saints, they are mostly foreign jihadis and cannot be viewed as trustworthy allies. Whoever are the powers that intervene they should be cautious not to draw America too deep into this bloody civil war. We should simply disrupt and destroy the chemical weapons if possible, and keep the heck out of this mess as much as is possible. No matter who wins the war for Syria, there is not real good outcome. Our priority should be to stop Assad from using his chemical weapons and to prevent the rebels from ever seizing them. The rest of this war business should be left to the Syrians.

The biggest problem is removal of chemical. You cant blow it up which is obvious so its boots on the ground. Careful on intervention yes I agree but the ultimate end result is going to be boots on the ground at some point in this fiasco.

@cowboy,yes it can be removed and the chemical like serin can be shipped to an incinerator off site..Many incinerators here stateside and in Europe by DOD for doing the same thing ,ridding the earth of these deadly coldwar era chemicals..And if boots are to be used make it as safe as possible,no more deaths, injuries from intervensions and senseless wars that republicans the draft dodgers love to advocate for!!Further more use the ICC in the Hague Netherlands for what it was created for bringing international criminals like Assad to justice and see them pay for being the monsters that they are in the deaths of thousands of innocents !!

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

Nonsense pure nonsense. It is not Americans who are killing those children now is it. It is the Assad regime with the help of their supporters in Russia. The Russians actually have a large bas in Syria and have been supporting the slaughter of children during this rebellion. It is the Russians who have interfered with the rebellion going on in Syria.

Then why is Assad giving full access? You might think that if he had anything to do with the attack he would try to keep inspectors out. And are you going to support another nation when they attack America's chemical weapons? Assad can defend his nation against the terrorist how he see's fit.

This is not a video game Ed. This is real life at the risk of REAL American lives. Don't be so eager to get friends and relatives killed. Let the process play out, let the military advisers and Joint Chiefs gather their intel and recommendations, and let's find a good plan for surgical precision. Let's not crawl into another "open-ended" war.

Why should the US strike Syria? Let them kill off each other until no one is left. If the US gets involved, it will only cost us another 10 – 20 year war! We don't need this! When the last person is standing in Syria, ask him/her who they want to rule the country. US, Russia, or give the whole damn mess to China! The US can't "rule" anyone, but Russia and China are pretty good at it!
