Osprey aircraft deployed for first time in support of Marine One

By CNN’s Greg Clary

(CNN) – Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys, aircraft that take off vertically, provided a dramatic new look for President Barack Obama’s travel detail as he and the first lady began a Martha’s Vineyard vacation on Saturday.

The Ospreys – making their presidential debut - shuttled White House staff, media and Secret Service members from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod.

The sleek tilt-rotor aircraft can take off like a helicopter but fly like an airplane.

The Marines say the Ospreys are twice as fast, can travel six times farther and are capable of carrying three times the weight of the Vietnam-era CH-46E helicopters which have supported missions involving the president.

There are no plans yet to have the president fly in the MV-22s.

The Osprey has raised some safety concerns over the years. It earned the unceremonious nickname “the Widowmaker” after crashes during initial development and testing.

In late 2000, the Corps grounded the fleet after two crashes, one in Arizona killing four crew members and 15 passengers and another in North Carolina that killed the crew.

But engineers redesigned the craft for improved safety and the Marines have used them extensively in Afghanistan.

Plans to build a new fleet of helicopters to be used as Marine One have hit multiple budgetary snags over the years. Obama canceled plans for a new fleet back in 2009 after projected costs soared to $11 billion.

Hard to believe we're in the middle of a big financial sequestration, huh? You know, if we just cut off all funding for the politicians (travel, secret service protection, paychecks) instead of making everyone ELSE suffer because the politicians can't seem to work together, I'd bet things would get fixed amazingly fast...

I'm getting less thrilled about leaders having stuff. I am upset about the USA and Marine Corps. I think it is important to say it again for the Aliens and gods. I don't like violence. I don't like the way man has animals in cages standing all day to be killed, or with their beaks cut off. I don't intend to support the military that dropped atomic bombs on civilians. If I support these things from the President to the veal cows then know I was trapped here.

I find it amazing how people can say they don't support the military, it shows how naive they are, not realizing what they have eg: (the freedom to post comments saying they don't support us.) Is because of the military and the brave men and women who are willing to sacrifice their lives for you.

I support the troops who are willing to step in harm's way. I do not, however, support the military leaders who use those troops as pawns for the political & economic gain of the rich.

So much money spent on these toys when used for civilian transport. What a waste. If only we knew how much $ is actually being spent on Obama's self-serving boondoggles. Yeah, he needs a vacation, but why does everything have to be above and beyond first class on our dime?

Sad part is we as the public shouldn't need to know every little detail. Regardless if we like our current President of not their safety is a major factor of our national security. I live in close proximity to an air base and can tell you the military aircraft that comes in and out on a daily basis far exceeds the Presidents annual trips. His travel cost are a fraction of our military cost. Both are necessary for us to live as we do in our country. Plain and simple.

Ive read what I could find and to many red flags pop up on the contraption. Allegations of playing with maintenance records which is a common practice, its a grey area wont go into it. Its a paper work game doesn't effect safety. Compare it to a ch46 interesting why not compare to a ch53 heavy lift? Trying to make it look good. Very innovated but there are a lot of issues. The main thing I see is to much Politics involved and that is a major red flag.

    • Caveman

When politics get involved they want it to look squeaky clean and pressure is put on the Maintenance officer and a couple senior NCO sooth Sayers and people work their behinds off and every now and then they get caught with their zippers down. But the bottom line is that aircraft stays down and I have never seen a knowingly unsafe aircraft get out of the chocks.

Bush went to his home in texas when he went on vacation. Prez Obama goes to Hawaii which is much more expensive. I also think our country is financially worse shape than when Bush was president. Try nearly 17 trillion. Really! Another vacation to Hawaii. Have fun spending money that is not there. Rome is burning!

Pres. Obama does not go to Hawaii for every vacation he takes. Those trips to Hawaii have been for the Christmas vacations that the First Family has taken. On most of the occurrences when the Obamas have escaped DC they have been in Martha's Vineyard, Camp David, or other such locations. These east coast locations are much closer than Crawford if this tax issue continues to be your 'point'. Either way, the vacations and security details that either President Bush or President Obama have required are not the main things that drove our debt into the sky. The two points you're looking for would be the astronomical amounts of money that were borrowed to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then the demands to continue to upgrade a military which is supposed to be on the road to ending combat operations in Afghanistan (ie- Congress demanding that the Army buy more tanks, when even the ARMY has said that they don't need more tanks. When the Army says they don't want more tanks, that's when you know you should stop buying tanks...)

Dubya took 77 trips to Crawford during his eight years. He also took around 800 days of vacation during that time. Curious how many days you took off during those eight years? Not sure what your complaint is...then again, maybe you just can't stand the fact that there is a black Democrat in the White House and you will complain about any issue, real or imagined.

Not sure what to make of your comment. First, he is from Hawaii so it's not an unreasonable request. Second, if you read the article, he's vacationing at Martha's Vineyard, not Hawaii.

@Jon,get a grip man.Either to Texas or Hawaii it still cost money its just the frequency of the trips in which Bushs had many, many more..450 days off vacationing in Bushs first 2 years alone and his daddy over 1000 days off in his only one term, where were you and these other ignorents when the phantom presidents weren't in Washington ,in a coma..Pres.Obama has had a mere 128 days since his inaugeration against the thousands of days those morons from Texas took ...It still cost money,Air Force 1 and all the goodies in security, journalists whether again its Hawaii or Crawford,Texas ,Camp David and yes even if its a working vacation as well, nothing changes right!!So get over your hatred for this president because no matter what he does its law of the land with these perks and this president hasn't abused his position like your republican reps have and you know it,facts hurt don't they Jon!!

Well when one of the first demonstrations of a plane/helicopter crashes killing the entire crew in front of Marine headquarter s with Congressmen and other VIPs watching they can expect some controversy going forward even if they get it right after numerous redesigns. Especially when the program cost far more than it should have (most all of programs these days).

Why is it that the blogs for news websites are always filled with trolls?

The V-22 is used by HMX-1 as a support helicopter, meaning it carries cargo basically. HMX-1 is the Marine Helicopter Unit that serves two purposes: they test helicopters for the Marine Corps in general, and transport the President and other High-Level VIPs on board their helicopters. The Ospreys used by HMX-1 are going to replace CH-53E "Super Stallion" Helicopters and CH-46 "Sea Knight" Helicopters in the supporting role for Marine One.

No, this does not mean that it will become the Marine One that transports the President. That's an entirely program, called VXX. Currently, it looks like the V-22 (or any other Boeing-built helicopter) will not be submitted for the VXX trials, and only Sikorsky seems willing to look into developing a new Marine One (keep in mind, VXX is intended to replace the VH-3D Helicopters that have served as Marine One for 37 years now). Previously, the VXX program produced the VH-71 Kestrel, which was eventually cancelled in 2009 because it would have cost $13 billion for just 28 Helicopters.

Every president travels with a large security detail that includes a lot of vehicles. These aircraft and the presidential helo (the "white tops" because those have white paint on the upper fuselage) are transported in C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft and have to be able to be assembled and flyable three hours after the C-5 lands. They set up in advance for the president when he or she (gasp) arrives in Air Force One. Then the aircraft are used by the security detail to accompany the presidential helicopter wherever it goes. This has been the case since the Kennedy administration, though the helicopters have changed over the years except for the ancient Sikorsky VH-3 used by all the Presidents since Kennedy.

    Incredible!

A number of commets state that the V-22 program is Obama's "fault".

    Look at the facts:

The JVX program that led to the requirement for the V-22 Osprey was initiated during the Ronald Reagan administration.

Development of the V-22 occurred during the George H.W. Bush administration.

Testing of the V-22 occurred during the Clinton administration

But here's the kicker – The George W. Bush administration requested $1.6 Billion for V-22 funding in FY2004 and full-rate production was authorized in 2005.

Obama did not become President until 2009.

So, how is Obama responsible for the V-22? Lots of uninformed jerks on this ste.

What gets me is 20-30 years to develop an aircraft and get it into production and operating capability. This AC has been in the works as long as I can remember (back to early 80s) and is just now (in the last few years) getting into extensive service. Crazy. F-15 dev started late 60s, first flight 1974, Initial Operating Capability 1977. F-16 dev started early 70s, first flight 1977, IOC 1980. But F-22 dev started early 80s, first flight 1997, IOC 2005. The Osprey seems to have had the same sort of story.

I've decided after reading the comments section over the last few weeks I want to start a website called: "Wacko-Bingo". Every week I post a "bingo board" on the website with the squares of the rows and columns filled in with all of the crazy political things get obsessed about: Abortion; Obamacare, Benghazi, the IRS thing, etc.

What you as a player have to do is find postings by the fewest number of individuals tied to the most un-related stores. Like for example, its just a matter of time before some crazy in this comments section mentions Abortion. So you put that persons handle in your bingo board under "abortion".

At the end of the week, the winner is the person with the fewest handles in their bingo board (meaning the fewest crazies comments on a lot of topics on the board) AND when the subject article is totally unrelated to the topic (In this example, a strong showing would be an abortion or obamcare comment against a airplane story like this one).

        Who wants to play?!?!?!

Ya totally! Like that stupid moon mission thing back in the 60s. There isn't even any gold nuggets on the moon to get! Sheesh! Nothing ever valuable comes out of pushing the envelope of technology! We should all spend our time staring at rocks concentrating now how perfect they are in all their glory! That way we'd never waste any money...

Seriously people, get a grip. Remember, if we never pushed the envelope of technology we never would make massive leaps forward in the standard of living. If we as a society weren't trying to achieve the unattainable we wouldn't have invented things like the transistor and without that you would be staring at rocks as opposed to typing comments on your computer. Also, you can thank DARPA (more USG spending) for the internet (not Al Gore); it was created out of a different military "boondoggle" called ARPAnet.

While not every attempt is a success off the bat, remember that ever dollar spent pushing the envelope is likely to benefit society in the long run (e.g. Race to the moon in the 60s, ARPAnet, etc). Whether you like it or not, advancements made under military/NASA development projects likely are the source for the vast majority of advancements to your day to day life in the last 60 years that are (who likes their Tempur-Pedic bed? Thank NASA).

So in summary, just because a product at as a stand alone object isn't a complete success or useful to you as an individual, it doesn't mean that all of the advancements made pushing the envelope of engineering won't one day enhance your life. We should thank our lucky stars that the USG still spends our tax dollars on projects like this because that is the only thing that keeps pushing technology forward in unprofitable areas that, magically, after a little investment become the seed for advancing our economy (e.g. ARPAnet -> Global Internet).

There's a damned good reason why it isn't used to fly the president around. It's a second stringer. Review of crash incidents specifically revealed that pilot error was not the sole cause in all crashes. Loss of lift during combat landings was also a major issue. The thing is a hideously expensive fail, propped up by the military to justify the amount of money they have spent on it (and expect to get in the form of kickbacks after retiring), and by members of congress who have components manufactured in their districts. I would invite the president to make that his sole form of transportation, not just an expensive backup. Go on, replace those stupidly expensive helicopters with the Osprey! No damned way the Secret Service goes for that. What this is, people, is putting all the fails in one place.

    August 11, 2013 at 7:27 pm | Reply
    • Homer10

Supposedly they have worked out the kinks. One or two crashes can be called pilot error. the number of crashes these have had definitely pointed to some sort of stability issue near the ground. I heard that they have quietly implemented some fixes that made the aircraft handle a lot better near the ground. The military doesn't want this to get out for fear of law suits.

I am amazed at the extremely negative opinions submitted by commentators about the V-22 Osprey. I wonder how these people could come to those views without any knowledge about the "facts" concerning the selection, development, accident history, fail-safe features and current use of the Osprey. Comments like "unsafe", "widowmaker", "boondoggle", "crash on engine failure" show that the writers are either uninformed or maliciously biased. These views suggest that our military leaders would procure a vehicle that would put out troops in harms way at an unnecessarily high cost.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The selection of the tilt rotor aircraft gfor future vertical assault and transport needs was initiated by a Joint Technology Assessment Group (JTAG) in 1982. The JTAG consisted of scientist, engineers and officers from each branch of service and from NASA. Various vertical take off concepts were evaluated for Marine vertical assault, Navy rescue, Air Force special operations, Army medical evacuation, combat air assault and combat logistic support missions. Mission effectiveness, operational and life-cycle cost, and survivability were among the factors studied. The tilt rotor aircraft emerged as the clear best choice.
The V-22, however, did encounter a number of highly publicised crashes that involved loss of life. The leading causes were pilot error (operationg ouside the prescribed flight envelope), maintenance error, or (in early development – since corrected) design error. No accidents have been attributed to the "tilt rotor concept". (To correct an incorrect statement in a prior comment, the XV-15 Tilt Rotor demonstrator aircraft experienced an engine failue on two occasions, but landed safely both times due to the "cross-shaft" that carries power from the remaining engine to the rotor on the opposite side).
To see what our military leaders are saying about the V-22, check out: http://www.navair.navy.mil/v22/
Procurement of the V-22 Osprey is now being considereded by several foreign countries – so there may be an economic windfall to this program as well.
I encourage the readers to "get the facts" before forming an opinion.

The aircraft industry will make a anything sound good. The F-16 was an aircraft overpriced a better and cheaper aircraft was the F-20 but privately funded. The F-111 was a nightmare to work on but once up it did the job. I can go on and on, but I know what works because all crewchiefs hung out together and nothing better to do than drink beer and complain with maintenance stories.

      >On 20 July 1992, pre-production V-22 #4's right engine failed and caused the aircraft to drop into the Potomac River by Marine Corps Base Quantico with an audience of congressmen and other government officials. Flammable liquids collected in the right nacelle and led to an engine fire and subsequent failure. All seven on board were killed and the V-22 fleet was grounded for 11 months following the accident.

Yes it has been redesigned. Yes after the billions we have p_ssed away on the thing, it better well be safe, decades after it was supposed to enter service. I have a feeling today it is very safe but when an aircraft starts off life so poorly it can expect some controversy for years to come. That said the V22 is far less expensive cluster f_ck than the F35 debacle.

That doesn't negate the fact that the program was a huge acquisitions failure. Acquisitions students in DoD study it to see what *not* to do. It remains a difficult and expensive platform to maintain, and has an unfortunate safety record, given the money and time it took to finally get the program from design to production to operation.

Glad he canceled the new ones. They needed to rename it the Albatross. It's debatable how useful they are and they cost a fortune to develop and build. They literally spent 30 years developing them and then they were a widow maker because so many crashed. If an engine cuts out while they are transitioning they have a nasty habit of dropping straight down like a rock.

The reason those crashes occurred was because of pilot error. The whole " they went back and redesigned the Osprey," was a gesture statement by Bell not to trample on the graves of the pilots. the military made the mistake by hiring jet pilots to fly and aircraft that is basically a helicopter that demands a lot different training. since the accidents the Marine corps uses strictly helicopter experience pilots, and then they modify their training

The money spent researching and testing this aircraft has already been spent. Cancelling the project now because we spent a lot developing it is the height of idiocy. The craft has performed well the past 7 years. It has been used extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan with fewer statistical issues than helicopters (when equal flight time is considered). It's a great aircraft and the President would be wise to adopt it for personal use. It's certainly much faster than a helicopter once it gets going.

I once spent $10k keeping my '92 Corolla road worthy, considering all the money I had invested in it already. I keep asking Toyota why they stopped producing the '92, having already spent so much on the research and development of the '92, since I would have used the $10k to put a down payment on a new '92.

Toyota produced a perfectly sound '92 Corolla and now their throwing their money away researching and developing these new generation of Corollas for '14 and beyond.

The cassette deck kept eating my tapes. I had to replace it with a used one found in a scrapyard. That one didn't last long either. It's becoming much more difficult to replace my eaten cassette tapes.

The Osprey fleet should never be retired.

Kinda seems cotnradictory for the article to reference not being able to build new helicopter fleets for the military due to Sequestration, and yet Obama is out partying it up at Martha's Vineyard with a fleet of Ospreys in tow. Maybe just staying at home in the White House for a week and treating the WH staff to a party would be significantly cheaper?

The Sequestration is kind of a joke. All the important things are getting cut from the military to the post office to government pensions getting the possible axe here in the future, but yet all the corrupt spending, leisure spending, and pet projects of the politicians remain and in fact they seem to be spending more money on this crud than ever before. Kinda backwards if you ask me, but then again I suppose this is nothing out of the ordinary for Washington.

I agree to an extent, certainly about the President needing to cut back. But as for Sequestration, the government needs to trim back, even the military (although certainly the President should cut his vacations first).

I agree with you that the government needs to cut spending, after all we are 16 trillion dollars in the hole, and quite frankly even with the Sequester cuts we are still spending close to a trillion dollars per year.

Where I percieve the Sequestration as a joke is that for one, as I mentioned we are still grossly spending money even with the Sequester in place. The real joke of it though is everything they are cutting is arguably vital to the nation as where the politicians are still spending tons of money for non-vital if not downright corrupt things. Look no further than the IRS Star Trek convention, the GSA lavish spending sprees, diplomats frequenting strip clubs in Venezuela, Obama going on vacation like the second time in a month (much like Bush.), spending money to give AQ weapons in Syria, giving Pakistan where AQ is safely harbored roughly 1 billion dollars a year, etc.

The Sequester is a joke, we're not even coming close to closing the budget defecit, the politicians are still spending record levels of money on mind-bogglingly stupid things from junkets to funding the enemy we're currently at war with, and the only stuff getting cut is vital military equipment, hard-working government employee benefits, pensions, pay, etc.

Since Bush and into Obama the American Federalist Republic is starting to look more and more like a Banana Republic everyday.

NASA did some great things in the last half a century. It brought us to the moon and back and all through space. While doing that, much of the technology we use today was developed (miniaturization of electronics, etc.). Don't knock NASA – it was one of the decent things we did. Now all we do is fight wars and waste our tax revenue.

Just remember, almost every DIME of that NASA Budget is spent here ON earth in wages to middle class families. Those families, in turn, support schools, fire and police departments, and their city/county infrastructure.
NASA leads the way to invention, research and development.
Without the impetus of NASA WE wouldn't be typing on these machines nor interacting on this internet.
You wrist watch has more computing power than was available on Mercury. Your Desk Top has capabilities Neil Armstrong would drool over. In the 44 years since Armstrong landed on the moon, smaller, better, faster, was the vision and necessity NASA paid for. 'Curiosity' wouldn't be driving around on Mars today without those scientific and computer achievements.
Hurricane Forecasts wouldn't be nearly as precise.
Medical procedures would still require much larger incisions and apparatus.
There are a whole bundle of benefits WE acquire from NASA that we don't think about, day to day, as we use them.

Then you have your priorities misplaced. Science is only .3 percent of your tax dollars. In other words, if you were to take your dollar bill and measure it out, it wouldn't even touch the ink. And that is simply the budget of NASA. So take your head out of the sand.

To put that $11 billion in perspective, that's around three times NASA's annual budget. You can take that two ways: flying the President around in total security can be compared to flying to the moon, or that NASA, which gets its budget cut constantly, is nowhere near as expensive as some people portray it to be.

The P-38 had problems with the flaps when it was in a dive: the pilot couldn't pull out of a dive because of the wind speed over the upper surface of the wing. Great speed. Innovative technology (for the time). The V-22 has had problems, just like EVERY other aircraft that ever flew.

You do realize the helicopters in Marine One are almost obsessively maintained so that they don't get in crashes, right?

I mean, some of the helicopters in Marine One (the VH-3Ds to be exact) have been serving for 37 years straight, without ever having an accident. They regularly do checks, inspections, and cleanings to make sure these aircraft are at 100%.

The same could easily be done with a V-22, while also offering Marine One an extended range.

You really think this is the first time there has been an aircraft nicknamed "the widowmaker"?
Ever hear of the F-104 Starfighter? That was another widowmaker and it served in various air forces from 1958 until 2004 when the Italians finally retired it.
I went to school with people that never lived that long.

The F-104 was a killer. Both on take-off and landing. You're right, though. It, too, was "Widowmaker".

Marine One is an H-3 not a CH-46. The 46 is a twin rotor design that looks a lot like a Chinook.

    August 11, 2013 at 10:54 am | Reply
    • Justin

Their reference to the H-46 was in speaking about the aircraft that have been used to SUPPORT the Marine One aircraft (VH-3s) over the last 20 years, not the actual aircraft the President flies in. Hence why it says right after that comment that there were no plans to use the V-22 as the replacement Marine One.

Although, if we want to be technical, in reality, it doesnt matter what aircraft the president is flying on, if it is a plane it is Air Force One, if its a helicopter it is Marine One, even if it isnt the widely recognized 747 Air Force One and VH-3 Marine One

      • Gamthin

So if the President was ever in an Osprey, would it be Marine 1 or Air Force 1, since it acts like a helicopter and an airplane?
"This is Marine 1, lifting off," and that after transition, "We are now Air Force 1!) These are serious questions that must be answered! 🙂

        August 11, 2013 at 1:30 pm |
      • Mark

Well it is only Air Force 1 if it is an Air Force plane. If the President is in a Navy plan, it is Navy 1. So in a Marine Osprey, no matter which type of flight, it would always be Marine 1.

You must understand that for any pilot this aircraft is like learning to fly all over again.
That is why they had so many problems in the start with this aircraft.
I am sure they will get it.
Sure it cost more to operate every hour but if flies 4 times as fast as other helicopter/airplane it might just end up being cheaper to operate than other well know helicopters.

Pivoting an entire propulsion system at the end of a wing is incredibly stressing on the wing structure in addition to requiring an enormously heavy and expensive to maintain bearing/transmission system. Part of the reason swing wing designs like the F-14 and F-111 fell out of favor was the expense of maintaining the wing movement mechanism. The V-22 design is worse than those in terms of maintenance.

The tilt rotor concept was a fad in aeronautical engineering circles when almost any concept could get prototype money. The Harrier was another mistake from those times. Maintenance costs just were not considered important when money fell like a waterfall. The USA needed a STOL attack aircraft with reasonable maintenance costs, NOT a VTOL attack aircraft that costs a fortune to maintain compared to STOL aircraft. The V-22 falls into the VTOL combat aircraft we did not need. It cost us the development of the STOL combat aircraft and helicopters we do need.

      August 11, 2013 at 11:05 am | Reply
      • John Wayne

I agree with your assesment in terms of operating costs but there is nothing like having a forward airbase to put rounds on target in less than 5 mins. The Vtol and STOL have it's place and the U.S. proved it can work. Having an aircraft carrier to ferry aircraft is cost prohibitive. an LHA with several of these aircraft is indespensible. Now do the math and see how much money is wasted.

        August 11, 2013 at 11:50 am |
      • David Hoffman

John Wayne, The big dissapointment for me with the Harrier is that what was supposed to be a VTOL operation from vertical launch with full ordnance to vertical landing at end of mission. We ended up with a STOL requirement for launch with ordnance due to significantly flawed design and engineering analysis. Thus lifetime operational costs increased significantly over original projections. We should have aimed for serious STOL from the start. It would have given us the same overall combat capability at less cost. The LHA would have to be redesigned with a much smaller version of the angled flight deck and catapult system used on larger aircraft carriers, but it would work well with serious STOL. Or we could use a ski jump launch design.

The Sikorsky X2 project might provide a better platform in the future than the V-22. A big coaxial rotor system for lift and low speed travel, separate propulsion for forward travel at medium to high speed, and stub wings to provide lift assistance at medium to high speeds. It is complex, but gives a smoother transition experience from low to medium speed flight or from medium speed flight to low speed flight than the V-22.

Another option would be to use the newer Sikorsky H-53K

    • Just a thought

Bell did that as well. Took a huey with jet engines as well at the turbine engine. once take off was done like a rotary wing then stat jet engine and free wheel the rotor system like a gyrocopter. Guess it scared the pilot pretty good in transition.

The Sikorsky X2 would be great, except for one problem it is in the prototype stage. The H-53K would be a good one, not as fast or as sleek as the V22. Another great reason why we should never have let Cheney have the power he did. He tried for years to cancel the V22, but got great opposition from republicon congressmen and republicon Senators, when they cared about their country. The V22 is a great machine. My son flew on some in Iraq and he loved them. I am still partial to the AH-1, UH-1, UH-60 and the CH-47, the fastest rotorwing airctaft in production today.

Its actually difficult to cost Pres GW Bushs holidays/trips to Crawford Ranch as the Crawford ranch was designated as the Western Whitehouse security costs , and other permanent staff at Crawford as well as the multi million dollars in renovations were included in the normal White House and Secret Service budgets. There was also an air force unit located near Crawford to enforce a no fly zone over Crawford , this no fly zone was increased and the air force unit was increased when either Bush or his family were there
Pres Obamas trip to Africa was an official Presidntial Visit with some vacation time . yes Air Force 2 was there for Michelle and the girls as they stayed longer than the president . Because it was an official trip there would also have been transport aircriaft for the cars , helicopters , ambulances and equipment , as well as aircraft to carry reporters , SS staff , and other staff needed for an official trip as well as their accommodation .
When Pres GW Bush went Sydney for the APEC Summit in 2007 besides Air Force One , Air Force Two was also there as well as a third plane carry journalist, medical staff , aides , political advisors and 5 chefs . There were also 3 planes carrying Marine One , the motorcade vehicles , ambulances, vip vehicles , SS vehicles and SS personnel to prepare for the Bush's arrival, they arrived 2 or 3 days earlier so extra accommodation cost as well . There were also 1,000 govt staff flown in so that's another 4 or 5 jumbos plus accommodation costs, most of these would have been needed due to the variety of discussions that were planned ,This was for a trip that lasted only 4 days . I think that trip would have cost a lot more than Pres Obama's trip to Africa.

This aircraft is dangerous, to much can go wrong, it's very difficult to fly as well. A huge waste of money to develop and produce this aircraft more then it's worth. The CH-46 was a fine aircraft with a great safety record, slower but always got the job done, I hope things work out with the Osprey but it has a dark cloud hanging over it.

Always remember: ANY aircraft is dangerous. When you are flying, gravity is not your friend. Just think about this little statistic: Most of the commercial passenger aircraft fleet in this country recieve minimal maintainence, have been is service for several decades. ANY craft that the President/VP fly in sees maintainence before and after flight. Things still break, short-out, etc.

The project your speaking of was esitmated to cost less than half of that $11b in 2005 and soared overbudget afterwards. Bush nor congress ever approved an $11b program. It was destined for cancellation.

Don't forget Obama's trip to Africa cost us more than all of Bush's vacations combined. 1 trip. Now he's on Martha's Vineyard. Make sure he doesn't allow any of the Kennedy's to drive him to Chappaquidick... okay?
