Documents shed light on U.S. surveillance programs

By Evan Perez

The Obama administration released two documents on Friday describing the scope of National Security Agency data collection programs, a bid to quiet criticism they violate privacy rights.

An NSA memorandum describes the beginnings of the agency's collection of so-called telephone metadata of nearly every American under a provision of the Patriot Act, and the agency's monitoring of foreign Internet traffic.

The agency says in the memo that its systems monitor 1.6% of the world's Internet traffic, and its analysts review .00004% of global traffic.

Published accounts drawn from leaked documents provided by admitted NSA leaker Edward Snowden have portrayed a much broader eavesdropping system under section 702 of the Patriot Act.

Another document from the Justice Department describes the legal basis for collecting the telephone metadata, such as the numbers dialed, the length and time of the calls. The government says the NSA phone data collection operated under court supervision, and that the database is only accessed for specific searches in counterterrorism investigations.

I think that the paranoid fringe should go underground with their theories and ideas instead of getting it out to the public – at least until it's 100% provable.

I think every time the fringe folks accuse the government of something crazy, like spying with drone surveillance and spying on all internet traffic or whatever, that some guy at the NSA jots it down on a file folder and sends it down the line to be implemented.

    Stop giving them ideas.

The 1.6% argument is a red herring. They depend on the ignorance of the public to equate that with "not much," whereas it means ALL email, ALL transactions, ALL correspondence, ALL GPS positioning from phones, etc.

Good grief Scott, it's a terrible thing to be in your position and I feel powerfully bad about it! Nobody should have to endure it and I mean nobody at all. Please Scott, do tell me what this has to do with the topic in question and do you think that we have the right to know whether this government is spying on us or not? For all we know, NSA could be watching both you and you mommy at this very minute!!!

Quite right, Pete. George W. Bush is just as much of a right-wing thug as Obama is as was his father before him! Obama mat call himself a "liberal", but his actions speak far louder than his words. He made the horrific mistake of continuing Bush's policies, resulting in the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. In other words Pete, neither George W. Bush nor Barack Obama have much of a soul!!!

The NSA releases statistics on the amount of data that is monitored. Why should anyone believe these numbers? Clapper lied before Congress about spying on Americans – now we are simply to roll over and believe what the government says? I don't think so.

Are you a complete idiot? Any company with technical data or extensive data on customers legally limits the info an employee can disclose without legal prosecution. That's the purpose of non-disclosure agreements. If you discover your employer is doing something legal, but which you find reprehensible, you disclose this info at risk of prosecution. If your employer is doing something illegal, you are theoretically protected by whistleblower laws. Where Snowden falls would be left up to the courts if he hadn't fled the country. Since he is not a member of the military he would be tried in civilian courts. Plenty of left wing groups would fund his defence. He hurts his legal position everytime he reveals more classified data and damages his image in the court of public opinion by hiding in non-US friendly countries. I think he's probably just a sad, unstable man. Hopefully some good will eventually come from his actions. So far the realities of modern anti-terrorism efforts and and partisan politics make that seem unlikely.
