Out of precaution, Marines on ready to go to Egypt to protect U.S. Embassy, citizens

By Barbara Starr

U.S. Marines stationed in southern Europe have been put on alert as a precaution in advance of expected large demonstrations and potential unrest in Egypt this weekend, CNN has learned.

About 200 combat capable Marines in Sigonella, Italy, and Moron, Spain, have been told to be ready to be airborne within 60 minutes of getting orders to deploy, according to two administration officials.

The units have several V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft that would carry troops and infantry weapons to Egypt to protect the U.S. Embassy and American government personnel and citizens if violence broke out against Americans.

The planned demonstrations are aimed against the Egyptian government.

The officials both emphasized this is contingency planning in advance of the expected demonstrations to ensure American military assets, including rescue forces, can act if needed. In the event Americans had to be evacuated from Egypt and could not get to the airport due to the unrest, there are about 2,000 additional Marines on board three Navy warships in the Red Sea, officials said.

A third official said the decision to keep the warship in the Red Sea was "very precautionary."

The United States expects Egyptian security forces will be able to protect American assets and personnel. No plans for personnel to leave have been announced, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Friday.

"This is not Libya," said the third official, alluding to last year's attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi.

During that attack, the military was unable to muster resources fast enough to protect the mission. Four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya, died in the attack.

Since then, after much criticism from Congress about the inability to respond, the Pentagon has been particularly sensitive about ensuring troops are within deployment distance of potential trouble spots in North Africa.

The embassy had already planned to be closed Sunday and Monday because of the demonstrations, according to a notice on the embassy's website. American citizens in Cairo have been advised to avoid areas where the demonstrations are taking place and "limit their movements."

Good news, but it obviosly should have been done before the Benghazi attack. Truthfully the commanding general of Africom should have had a rapid response group in Siginella for years prior to Benghazi so the question remains why wasn't one established. We know it wasn't for lack of available funds. The President could have transferred money from his vacation fund which runs about $300 million a year. It could be because of poor military planning or State Dept politics.

Richard wrong, how about the thousands of American lives lost in Iraq? Or the trillions of dollars spent? Bush and the Republicans got way more people killed and spent way more money. But you GOP fukfaces never got anything to say about that.

Pull them out, let them all rot, and bring the billions of dollars of aid back to the US.

Then all the whiners can shut up.

I would have to say let the Egyptian people solve this problem. I hate to say this but the whole area from North west Africa to India is an ocean of madness. Blazing ring of conflicts.

This is not an invasion of Egypt! "The 400 US soldiers coming to Egypt as mentioned in the media are part of the periodical renewal routine for the US faction of the 13-state multinational force deployed in Sinai since the peace treaty. They are not armed with military operations gear,” spokesman of the Egyptian military Ahmed Ali said Saturday. In other words, these Marines "at the ready", have been in and out of the area for a sustained time carrying on joint security operations with the Egyptian military. This time they will assist with embassy security and evacuation of American citizens should events dictate. Jeez!

Are you crazy?! America stay the hell out!!! If you go in it will show that you support the terrorist mafia!!! Do NOT even think about it!

How are these marines going to get in?! By force? Or will they be getting permission from the Muslim brotherhood – who will welcome Americans coming in so they can kill the protestors!!!

Let me tell you that if the marines go in by force then it will tell the Egyptians that you are coming because you want war!!!

Let's see, if there was a civil war in the US and Egyptians living here – will America allow Egyptian marines to enter the country with the excuse they want to save the Egyptians?!!!! Hell no!! So don't even think about it!!!

Also, is America trying to scare the civilian protestors because they want Morsi to stay in power???!!!!!

Give me an instance where marines went into a country publicly to rescue someone that didn't result in war!!!

        Sarah,

DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE? It specifically said that "Marines are at the ready". In the event if Americans are attacked at the American Embassy, then the Marines will respond with the intention of retrieving the Americans from the embassy to ensure there is no harm bought to them. The Americans are simply protecting their own period.

        July 1, 2013 at 12:25 am |
      • Sarah

Jay: yes of course I read the article carefully!! But I am responding to George Patton-2. Did YOU read what he wrote?!! There is no way in hell that if there is a crisis in America and Egyptian marines threaten that they will enter to rescue Egyptian citizens that America will let them. Therefore if the Egyptian marines put one foot on American soil it will be interpreted as war!! Similarly, if one American puts one foot on Egyptian soil, it will be interpreted as war!!! I hope that clarified things for you!! And I don't care what their excuse for coming in is – no one armed is allowed to enter Egypt and if you enter by force then expect the Egyptian military to respond – and it will NOT be a friendly response!!

AntiNeutral: Egypt is NOT Grenada!!! And I think the Egyptian military and the great Egyptian people have shown the world who we are!! Watch the news and you will see how great my country is!! We love anyone who is peaceful and treats us with respect!

USMC1371 – I think you are still missing the point. The idea is NOT just about our soil but anything that belongs to Egypt, including our airways!! So no one is allowed to enter our airways no matter what their excuse is!! Unbelievable what you guys are saying!! If you would not allow this in America then why do you think Egypt will!! Please try to understand and try to respect our country!!!

This is all besides the fact that not one American living in Egypt was taken by surprise – these protests were planned for MONTHS so if an American was afraid then the should have left, PERIOD. If they are still in Egypt then I urge them to stay home and be safe!! Egyptians do NOT want anyone to get hurt on our soil! And please keep on mind that the Egyptian military is doing its best but with such huge crowds, it is difficult for any country – regardless how civilized – to ensure the safety of everyone!! My advice: Americans in Egypt stay home and be safe and American military/marines don't you dare come anywhere close to my country!!

Stunning decision from the Administration; send our military into a Nation about to explode with internal strife, to protect and assist in what will turn out to be the escape of American citizens and officials, rather than get those people the hell out of Egypt. This will not go well. Yet another blunder in Obama's foreign policy. I sure hope no American lives are lost over this idiocy.

AND....why wasn't the Marines on standby for the Middle East Embassies and Consulates where reports had been coming in over lurking danger for 9/11/2012? EVERY 9/11 should put our military on alert overseas for those places in high danger areas. I mean...come on...Ambassador Stevens had been begging for security for Benghazi for over 6 months and what did the Obama team do? They WITHDREW the security the Ambassador had...UNBELIEVABLE! This Administration is 100% RESPONSIBLE for the death of FOUR Americans whose only crime was serving Dear Leader. This Benghazi cover up and failure to protect our people when in danger makes me nauseated!

Couldn't agree with you more, Suzy..... But that is also precisely WHY it will not be allowed to happen again. The embarrassed & apparently impotent Obama Administration and their future candidate Clinton, looked SO bad they are more likely to over-react this next time. Egypt will think we are picking on them, but if this same type of thing was happening in ANY other country, they would be the unfortunate ones who followed the debacle in Libya.

Thank you for making the point I was about to say. Egypt is NOT a country of war – we do not value building armies as much as America and Israel do. america and Israel have a lot of enemies and so they need to focus on building armies and nuclear weapons, etc... Thankfully Egypt does not have as many enemies. and dont you say that your enemies are just envious! There are richer more prosperous countries, such as Switzerland. so if we want to be envious we would envy them more not a country thats going bankrupt like America.

Egypt wants to remain a peaceful nation. We want Americans to support us not attack!!

I know there a lot of Egyptian youth that are ready to fight for their country but seriously Egypt is at its weakest point in history and America would be a coward if they even think about going to war with Egypt – it's like going to beat a man when they are dying and unarmed! Cowardly! And it would mark a very black part in American history. Egypt is adored by the Arab world so if you alienate Egypt then you will be giving more reason for Arabs to hate you and you will also be proving that America would do anything to ensure the terrorist organization, the Muslim brotherhood, stays in power! A very stupid move!

America is going bankrupt and all Americans are thinking about is to go to war?! Seriously?! Leave Egypt alone!!!!

If you didn't Understand The Egyptian mentality yet it's your problem..we respect our commitments more than you can imagine .. we welcome strangers more than you can imagine..we can mentally struggle inside sometimes..but when it comes to our land we are one person and we prefer death rather than seeing a stranger stepping on it .. we respect Israel till now because they don't touch our land .. we consider Americans Friends till now..as long as they respect us..don't ever try to touch the key of mutual respect..because whoever touches our pride or our respect he is our Enemy..He is safe as long as he is outside our borders and only expresses his opinion.. Israel beated Egypt in the first war because Egyptian hearts didn't hold revenge inside ..Egyptians are so peaceful when they don't hold revenge in their hearts..and that's why Israel lost the war in 1973..because every house lost a member in Sinai .. we don't attack outside our borders and we don't want to beat Israel..you want peace we are your friends..you enter our borders ..or you make us lose anything..beware our anger because no weapon can make us happy of killing you..brother sweet pain is right ..we will eat you alive literally .. we will kill you with our hands and our teeth .. muslem will be hand to hand to christian..this land is ours..this big home is ours..we don't bomb ourselves like palestinians and we don't care about anything outside our borders..Egypt is a big Tomb to it's enemis and in war we never allow ourselves to die without taking the souls of our enemies by our teeth and our hands..beware implanting revenge in hearts of Egyptians.. be our friends you find heaven on our land .. be our enemies if you come here you are not going back to tell your story.. Mr.What when u come to Egypt as a civilian i welcome you as my guest and i will take you to visit every where in our land..but if you come in the battle dress i will be happy to drink all your blood and enjoying chewing your flesh.......and i'm not the only one here..we don't need the red cross because we are not for capturing..and we don't fight eachothers..we r not Iraq nor Syria nor Afghanistan nor we are Palestine.. stay with your mom man she needs you..or she will die looking at your name on a memorial because there will be no tomb for you..

@Sarah, did you read the article and understand it? Are you with Sweet Pain, smoking that camel dung? The article was about a contingency plan to protect and evacuate the embassy and its staff because your military may not have the balls to secure and protect the embassy. The US do not need to screw your country, you and your ilks have already done so.

The way you talk shows that you have no respect for others. You represent your country really poorly.

Yes I read and understood the article very well but I was responding to the "What?" Person. Apparently you are not keeping track. You just like to disrespect anyone – it truly shows how much respect you have for yourself.

The embassy is closed! There is no human life to secure there and if the Americans are so scared then they need to get the hell out but don't you dare let your marines put one foot in Egypt!!

This revolution has been planned for months and the unrest was not sudden – all Americans in Egypt know very well what was planned today and they know the dangers so they should have left if they were scared. If they didn't leave then it's their own damn fault and this does not necessitate any marines or military action!! Did u get that? Did that register? God I hope so!

And yes Egypt is going through a lot and we are trying to clean our country from Muslim extremists and terrorists that thanks to the corrupt American foreign affairs are growing in number!

And don't change this to say I am blaming America for what Egypt is going through! I am not – I blame the Egyptian corrupt government but we need America and Americans to stay the hell out of our country and out of our internal affairs!!

The Egyptian military has enough to deal with and they will secure everyone who is peaceful as much as they can but just like innocent Egyptians are dying so can innocent Americans!! But they have no excuse – Americans knew what was coming so they should have left... Now they just need to stay home and try to be safe and I wish everyone in Egypt safety. God bless Egypt! Take your hatred some where else Ketyah!!

SARAH.... you are obviously a passionate, Egyptian citizen that loves her country very much. I just don't understand how you, or anyone else, could possibly believe that the American military would want to invade your country. We, the American public, would NEVER stand for the USA to provoke war, in Egypt or anywhere else. There is no reason to go to war or send troops to Egypt. Our government is not perfect either. Too often, and like many other countries, we feel the need to apologize for the actions or words of our leaders. Unless your government ASKS for military assistance from the USA, then I can assure you that the only reason Marines would enter your country would be to get American citizens out. You do not have to believe in our leaders but you should have a little more faith in the American people. We are sick of war. I lost a family member in Afghanistan recently and like many others here, we just want our sons & daughters to come home & have peaceful happy lives. The American people may disagree with your leaders, or choices, but we also want the same peaceful, happy lives for you, your children and your future.

American warships, like those from numerous other countries, are ALWAYS near Egypt. In this case, having a warship nearby not only provides a place to which Americans can be quickly and safely evacuated, but it also provides a contingency force, a "backup plan" in the event the crisis were to become more dangerous than first believed. The American warship, like the Marines they carry, are only there to aid & assist the evacuation of Americans & to be prepared for any contingency. Just don't shoot at them, or any other Americans & they won't bother you.

Anti-Neutral: If Egyptian warships are right next to American soil and I say the same thing to you. If I tell you yes the Egyptian warships will be moved and the Egyptian marines are ready to go in to rescue our people but we may have a contingency plan!! How would you respond???!!!! Would you feel safe or would you feel like you are being invaded???!

And what the heck would these contingency plans contain?!!!

Would you just believe me if I told you oh Egyptians are great and we won't harm you??!!!

Lastly, you say just don't shoot at them and they will not come near you – well guess what if any armed person enters my country by force – I will expect my military and marines to shoot to kill!!!!!!!! By the way, you would expect the same if anyone enters your country by force!!! Please respect my country. Thank you.

US embassy is considered one of the most important embassies in Egypt, no one can mess with it, it secured by the Egyptian army , as happened in the events of January 25, 2011, when the Egyptian army secured the embassy and ensure the protection of the U.S. ambassador and members of the diplomatic mission, so do not worry ,it is in the custody of the Egyptian army, which will make sure their safety, and will allow to face any danger.

If that is true, and I hope that it is, then the Marines are the least of Egypt's problems. The article's primary theme is that the Marines will only come in to get American personnel out, if Egypt deteriorates further into lawlessness and loses it's ability to protect any country's embassy & personnel. No one in America wants to invade, occupy or blow up Egypt.

The future Democratic presidential nominee (Clinton) looked bad on the whole Libya fiasco. She didn't look "presidential" and IMO she was less than honest about it all. (which, ironically, does make her appear presidential) There's a real need to not let it happen again. But the US military also takes it personally when American lives are in imminent danger & they can't get to the fight quick enough. They, too, are NOT going to let that happen again. If Egypt is the next such trouble-spot, then I'm sorry but the highly-motivated Marines are coming, with the full support of their government & the American people. You might just want to let them in, then let them leave with our people and they will likely never kill a single Egyptian. They are not coming to invade your country. They are only coming because you can't guarantee our people's safety. Americans do not want to take your country. We'd rather just be good friends from a distance. Egyptians should decide Egypt's future. But the canal belongs to the whole world. Otherwise, we'll be happy not to send out son's to die in your country. Good luck with your revolution.

      • AntiNeutral

The canal reference was only to state the obvious. Egypt is where the world's most vital canal is located. If Egypt, or some person or group within Egypt, tried to close it, restrict it or damage it, it will not only be the American's that will be coming. The authority that governs use of the canal is under an obligation to keep the canal open ""in time of war as in time of peace, by every vessel of commerce or of war, without distinction of flag." If Egyptians want to be ruled by the Muslim Brotherhood, that's your choice. But like I said, the canal belongs to the world and it would be a huge mistake to politicize it.

        June 29, 2013 at 3:55 pm |
      • Sarah

Thanks for clarifying. But I don't think it's going to end up in war. The canal will remain to provide a source of income that Egypt desperately needs so I am glad u were not referring to the fact that the marines were going in to take over the canal! That would be a huge mistake and the international community will never allow it.

Send out all the American personnell out now if you are worried! AMERICANS WORKING IN EGYPT PLEASE LEAVE WE DO NOT WANT YOUR MARINES IN EGYPT!!!! Even if you are Egyptian citizen and also a US citizen you should leave!! Who knows, America might use that as an excuse to go to war with Egypt! Oh man I am scared not from what Egyptians might do to each other but now of what America might do to Egypt!!

Do NOT even think about involving any part of the US military! 2200 marines not just 200!! You can kill a lot of Egyptians with that many marines. Please tell all the Americans in Egypt to leave now if they are even slightly concerned but don't you dare get any marines or marine jets close to Egypt. Stay very far away! You do not want to be involved not because Egypt will be able to fight back but that you will slaughter us and this will mark another black part in American history!! Even if your reasons are noble, they are likely to miss-interpreted. What if an extremist muslim Egyptian tries to kill the marines – what will happen? America will go to war against Egypt!! Do NOT go in!! Leave Egypt alone!! Stay away!!!!!!!

It will not look good for the US. Do NOT go into Egypt. You can get permission to send a private jet to safely take the embassador and her family out if you are that concerned. But do NOT let marines get into Egypt, especially NOT in large numbers!! 200 marines! Are you serious!! The role of the US in aiding Morsi is questionable!! You will definitely raise huge red flags if you send this huge number of marines! DO NOT DO IT!!!!!

Actually, that you failed to notice that Barbara got it all wrong, on purpose of course, not kathmorgan. Kath was pointing out Barb's revision of the past events.

Assets were not ready and would not have gotten there is time. The ambassador died from smoke inhalation not from a gunshot wound.

        Swej,
Do really beleave that the US could not have gotten air support over that location in 4 hours? A commerial flight from italy takes under 3 hours. A US C130 gun ship could make it even faster and could have cleared the area around the compound till troops got there. Even if we lost one their was no reason in the world for four to die except for failure in the White House.

SwEJ Late or on time someone should have been sent anyway. Even if late you can honestly say you did try.

Barb is a typical liberal zealot. She will rewrite history in order to cover up her leader's great mistakes and at the same time try to pin blame where it never was. I've lost all respect for her after this propaganda piece. This is shameful reporting.

You think as they thought, they thought before you that the can occupy Egyptian Land or Egyptian Souls, since thousands of years, they failed...ops.

Americans are supporting terrorists for the sake of controlling Egyptians,

Trust an Egyptian citizen when he says, you will definitely taste the pain of regret soon.

Your right they are sending way too many Marines. Half that force and the terrorist body count will still be sky high and they will blame the US for being ruthless murders.
