Will U.S. arm Syrian rebels? White House to discuss it this week

By Elise Labott

JERUSALEM (CNN) - Obama administration officials confirm there will be White House meetings this week on Syria, where discussion of possibly sending lethal weapons to Syrian rebels will be on the agenda.

The officials stressed no final decisions have been made, although they said President Barack Obama was inching closer to signing off on arming moderate rebel units that had been vetted.

The White House meetings will also discuss a possible no-fly zone, although officials said that was less likely.

Once again we, the U.S. seem to be on the brink of getting involved in a messy civil war in Syria. Mr. President and Mr. Cain et al, you are not going to be the saviours of liberty around the middle east, at the expense of American lives and economy. Nip it in the bud. Carefully calculated small arms aid, subject to congressional approval is all we should do.

Syrian Regime never hurt anyone outside their country other than Lebanon. I much rather have to worry about one tyrant (al-assad) we know about rather than 3000 tyrants we don't know about.
Giving weapons to these rebel thugs will do nothing but create problems and instability for the region. Israel will probably have to defend themselves against these same weapons in a few years.

As for Hezbollah, have any of you checked to find out how many rebel fighters in Syria are actually Syrian? Do we know where these people came from? Do you think they'll just leave if they topple the Syrian regime? All Hezbollah does is repel invaders, thats what they are good at, they extremely disciplined. Have any of you been to a Hezbollah neighborhood, they may be religious, but their neighborhoods are clean, disciplined, and without crime, and they are tolerant of other beliefs in their communities.

Qusair’s strategically important. Western-backed death squads controlled it for over a year. On June 5, Syrian forces triumphed. Insurgent fighters were routed. Many were killed. Others were captured. Remaining elements fled.

"Syrian people" have spoken. Roughly 70% support the government of Bashar al-Assad. Another 20% are neutral. And only 10% are aligned with the Western-supported "rebels", including those of the kidnapping, lung-eating, beheading jihadi kind.

The data was provided mostly by independent relief organizations working in Syria.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

Just who exactly are these rebels? They are, of course, Sunnis, but there are so many splinter groups....jihadists etc...Who gets the arms? Getting involved and choosing sides in this sectarian rebellion will not win the hearts and minds of many Shia. And more likely will eventually blow up in our face!

You forgot to mention here that the biggest half of these so-called "rebels" are outsiders from places like Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia and others armed to the teeth by the West! Let Assad win, I say!

Concur.....There are few "good guys" in this rebellion. Assad is no saint, but we knew where he stood. There was relative peace and prosperity in Syria albeit at the expense of some Sunni tribes.
