Obama speech to focus on drones, Gitmo

By Jamie Crawford, CNN National Security Producer

From the targeted killing of Americans overseas to the future of the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, President Barack Obama will lay out the framework and legal rationale for his administration's counterterrorism policy in a widely anticipated speech on Thursday.

Administration officials tell CNN that Obama will use the National Defense University speech to continue to call on engagement with Congress on aspects of national security, more transparency in the use of drones, and a review of threats facing the United States.

He will make the case that the al Qaeda terror network has been weakened, but that new dangers have emerged even as the U.S. winds down operations in Afghanistan after more than a decade of war triggered by the 9/11 attacks.

Threats that have emerged come from al Qaeda affiliates, localized extremist groups, and homegrown terrorists.

The address will also build on remarks Obama made in his annual State of the Union address earlier this year when he said his administration works "tirelessly to forge a durable legal and policy framework to guide our counterterrorism efforts."

When it comes to drones, they have been highlighted as a target and seen by the whole world under Obama Administration counterterrorism policy. Unless the drones’ targets are not the terrorists, otherwise, the terrorists stand a chance of disappearing from being targeted by the drones.

What we know is that Obama Administration would have had a hard time dealing with the event such as Benghazi attack. What we don’t know is that what kind of compromise this Administration will have to make without the support of its own ground troops.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

First of all for those who don't know, we can't change our snowflakes. That little thing that shows up beside our name. So the guy you refer to as John, Travis, General Patton, Tom, and he even uses my name as well. The best thing to do is just ignore any comment he throws out, its almost always anti-American, and drivel. The guy is an idiot. Not one person here has mentioned the one thing that was said during that speech that is true above all others. Muslims terrorists kill more muslims than any other group of people. The drones that you especially General Patton, Portland Tony, Travis, John Gershon, Tom, drone on about, have admittedly taken lives that shouldn't have been lost, although they have also hit their targets with great proficiency, and without the drones that would have meant boots on the ground or indiscriminant bombing which would have cost many more lives. Still the numbers don't come close to matching those that have been by committed Muslims against each other.

Yes your still an idiot General Patton or better known as dickwad as I like to call him.

    Peace

You do not use force to suppress extremism especially that you consider to be from the Muslims. The real surgery is total eradication and not containment. This requires the West and their authorities to have the appropriate knowledge on the meaning of Islam. Muslims do not listen to one another and never learn. You have to teach them and put them on the course as Muhammad did. Unless you do that there will never be an end to this instability and fear.

After reading all these sicko comments here, praising those murderous drones and Barack Obama, it appears to me that Christianity in this country is becoming a thing of the past. The irony here is that however anxious Obama is to uproot Islam in the Middle East, he's inadvertently doing the same thing to Christianity here. We have to quit supporting these godless wars and restore a sense of decency among the general public!

Gee, gosh and golly!!! The Teabaggers are all saying that Obama is a muslim, so how could a muslim be destroying the muslims in the middle east? Maybe he isn't a muslim. Maybe he isn't destroying the muslim religion. Maybe Al Qaida and the Taliban are destroying the muslims with their violence.

Those drone victims people call "Americans" are not Americans and never were Americans. They took a required pledge of allegiance to America which they had no intention of honoring. It was a false pledge that nullifies their status as American citizens. Their only allegiance is to violent jihad which targets innocent people without distinction and they say that in their claims of responsibility for violent attacks on innocent people.

So instead of droning terrorists where they live, Obama's great new plan is to immigrate them to America and give them social welfare handouts? I don't think that's going to turn out well.

I'm very surprised not to see a lot more of these insane psychopaths blogging in here over those "marvelous and wonderful" drones and brag about their killing "terrorist militants". Given time, I suppose they'll show up on this post sooner or later with their most sickening bravado! By the way, Barack Obama has managed to do everything wrong since he became President so why should this be any different?

      What's your solution, John?

While this one occupies himself with preserving his power, which in turn means redistributing wealth from the top half that earned it to the bottom half that voted for him, ordinarily a president's most important duty is commander-in-chief, ensuring domestic tranquility and providing for the common defense. Expansionist religious ideologues are planning attacks on Americans from failed states the US cannot access. How would you stop that? Or would you ignore it, like Bill Clinton did? Or treat it as a criminal law action, "Investigate and bring them to justice" which worked so well for the USS Cole.

It worked out rather well after WW2 when we brought both the German and J aponese war criminals to justice, Tom. Why not try this on the thugs in Washington D.C. and London, too? After these goons are no better than they were!!! We also need to get rid of those free spenders at the Pentagon who never made this country on bit safer than before!

@JohnGeheran,remember that the MICs budget is larger than the next ten countries combined..If you want Pentagons defense spending more responsible take the republicans and the MICs lobbyists out of the equation then you'll see things cool down quickly !!

@Travis,don't comment on something you know nothing about especially drones..Many a foot soldier appreciated a drone for saving their asses with either info or taking out a hidden insurgent..My son an exNavy pilot drone operator enlisted to serve his country and after strengent testing he became a drone operator, not a murderer as you rant about as ignorently as others..I'm proud he served even being against these wars started with Bushs lies myself but he came home after his time and that's that...Quit condeming when you don't know about the subject and that's to all of you or go serve yourselves because most of you voted for that imbecile in Bushs that started this mess in the first place, hit a nerve anyone ,so what truth does hurt doesn't it!!

Those drones, while slaughtering a great number of civilians along with the so-called "militants", don't save quite as many lives as the right-wing propagandists in Washington wish us to believe. The reason being is that there are just too many people making a mint off these godless machines while right-wing politicians build their careers on this so-called "war on terror".
