Army sergeant accused of videotaping female cadets at West Point

By Barbara Starr

A U.S. Army sergeant first class stationed at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has been charged with allegedly secretly videotaping female cadets in their shower and latrine areas, according to Army officials.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael McClendon was charged May 14 with 13 "specifications" or allegations of "indecent conduct" in making videos between July 2009 and May 2012. Army criminal investigators are now contacting more than a dozen women who might have been videotaped, according to Army spokesman George Wright.

Wright said the investigation has been going on since May 2012, but charges were not made until last week because the Army was still trying to assemble computer evidence and identify the women involved.

He said he could not comment on how the matter was discovered because of the ongoing investigation.

McClendon, who helped train and mentor cadets, was relieved of all cadet duties and barred from any contact with cadets or cadet areas on May 17, 2012, and assigned to a desk job, Wright said.

He was transferred to Fort Drum, New York, on March 13, Wright said.

The story was first reported by the New York Times. The Army made no public announcement of the case and has only responded when asked questions by reporters.

This case comes as the Pentagon is grappling with a rise in sexual assaults in the military and pledges from President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to redouble efforts to address the problem.

The military is losing it's integrity. When I was a young soldier entering the military I looked up to senior NCOs and officers. I am now concerned about young adults being placed in harms way. It is time to hold these adults accountable for their behavior!

I don't understand why he was tranfered to another military base?! He needs to be put on leave or sent to one of the farest reaches of a province in Afghanstan until it is determined he is guilty (which after such a looong time of being investigated) we must assume he is guilty. Transfering him to another base is not sending the message the military needs to send LOUD AN CLEAR! Rape is absolutely not acceptable !

I agree 100%. That is not the only area that is terribly wrong with the Army. The Army treats their civilian workers like crap. I know, I worked for them for nine years. Everyone is ignored no matter what it is. We complained to the general and nothing was done. Then when the base closed they sent the LTC to the pentagon for easy duty. Now that sucks.

Yeah... Um... Let's send him to a combat zone where people are known to turn their heads and look the other way... A place where Women are most scared of going to the bathroom at night, because they may be raped... Sorry, can't agree with you there. I agree with Pre-Trial Confinement, but not deployment where he will be around other women... Just not a good thing.

For all of you citizens out there basing the military, you fail to realize one thing. The military is a direct reflection of society. What ever society has to offer is what the military gets! Yes, the high standards of conduct are still here and we do our best to instill discipline and morals in some of the most unruly people that decide to join our ranks. Some people just will not change their behavior. They are totally incorrigable. Some of them get discharged immediately after displaying patterns of misconduct and some get lucky to not get caught or reported for disorderly behavior for many years. For example: this SFC that likes to record females. He should have never made it to the rank of Sergeant First Class in the first place. If he had the potential to do something like that, chances are he already has gotten away with things that should have had him kicked out. That is why he thought he could do such a thing as much as he did and get away with it. Many people hide their true selves until they make it to high ranks and then display their true colors, because they really think they can get away with it or the rules don't apply to them anymore. Military personnel need to be steadfast in upholding high standards of personal conduct on and off duty, no matter what their inhibitions are.

so a guy joins the military...and makes it all the way up to rank of SFC and that's the civilian society's fault? Yes, that makes a whole lot of sense.

Camelsypder, you say he is a refection of the general population. No he is not, He was given, in some capacity to a role in training cadets. Part of his job was to influence and train the next great leaders of the ever changing Army. Think of some of the great general that were trained at West Point. How totally disappointing that he did what he did and how disapointing West Point let him get away with it for as long as that did. When the leaders of West Point allowed this to go on for as long as it did, they are totally complaisant in the entire disgusting mess.

It is part of a man's nature to stalk and watch our natural prey. You draw our eyes like a flame draws moths, and to make it worse, we have an actual gland that fills up between sessions and makes us itchy. Why do you think all those movies about high school are full of stuff like what this guy did? We learn by graduation to control ourselves, and we are mostly successful, but don't think it isn't a struggle.

Let me guess...if any of the women videotaped are from West Virginia, they've already approved of the sergeant's actions. Just ask Mark Sanford. The women in WV voted for him overwhelmingly. And most women in the south voted republican in the generaol election, despite the right waging a gender war on women, voting against equal pay for eaual work and belittling women about "God's will" and "legitimate rape" and so on.

And despite republican CIA chief David Petreaus having an affair with two women and allowing them access to classfied information, all while our consulate was being attacked in Benghazi, republicans blame President Obama, Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton for the attacks and "a cover up." But it was Petreaus who was "covered up" in bed with these women while our consulate was being attacked. And top republicans Eric Cantor and John Boehner knew in advance that Petreaus was having an affair with these women and compromising our national security, yet they remained silent. Let's face it, David Petreaus should be prosecuted and Cantor and Boehner should be put on trial for treason.

Fast and Furious was implemented by the Bush administration in 2006! But I like how Petreaus is allowed to sail off into the sunset and not be held accountable for his treason but President Obama, Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton are taking heat for Benghazi while Petreaus layed in bed with two women. By the way, google "Just Foreign Policy – Iraqi War Casualties." The Iraqi death toll as a result GWB's war crimes now stands at 1,455,590. And so far, more than 8,000 U.S. casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan and over 50,000 injured and traumatized.

Yes, he was having an affair, all while terrorists were plotting to attack our consulate. He should have been on duty, doing his job helping to facilitate military readiness prior to and during the attacks. So far, the President has been blamed, the head of the U.S. State Department in Hillary Clinton has been blamed and the U.S. head Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice has also been blamed for the attacks. But what about republican head of CIA David Petreaus? Forget the right wing witch hunt. We all know where petreaus' head was.

  13. Too Bad

Poor females. In a country where men have zero right to privacy or dignity, I couldn't care less if females suffer the same fate. Men have no right to privacy in locker rooms, restrooms, or any other places. Men have to tolerate searches by female officers at any time. Men in prisons have to tolerate female guards watching them shower or use the restrooms, even if the men are being detained waiting for trials. Too bad if females don't have any privacy. I guess they will understand equality.

You can't compare deliberate violation of privacy for personal gratification to the use of common areas for men. If anybody ever taped me showering or peeing or anything else w/out my knowledge, they would answer to every man in my family – no trial necessary. Oh, and you are a creep.

By all means, let's just integrate women into combat's your sign. Right or wrong, it is what it is. When the war drums pound, adrenaline rises, a woman should be the furthest thing from a grunts mind. If women fit somewhere into combat roles, use a little common sense instead of political correctness. Seems to me that politics kills soldiers faster than any other force on earth.

I'm a woman and I agree. The military and police are no place for women. I don't understand what these women are trying to prove, but it's only created problems. Get a regular job and stop trying to act like we're men's physical equals. We are not. If I needed a cop or a militant, I want a man to come to my aid, not a woman pretending she's just as good as a man, but in no way is as physically strong. We are not built the same. Our bodies are not designed for the same things.

Watch about ten minutes of women's basketball and imagine one of those big mamas coming at you with a bayonet. Watch some martial arts matches, serious stuff and not fake-wrestling. Women are scarier than men; they walk up to Death, slap its face, and tear away a new life from its jaws. Not every woman makes a good soldier, but not every man does either.

I did patrols, I was on fire teams, I worked hard and I expected respect from my fellow service men and received it. Do not demean the women who are willing to step up and fight for their country the right because your are unable to cope with their presence. The idiots that do the acts on women are not the norm in the military. They are a microcosm of the populace of the U.S. as a whole.

Not surprised @ all. A similar thing happened to me in the women's barracks when I was stationed in Korea. A male soldier came into my barracks and opened the window blind while I was in the communal shower. Luckily, I had closed the shower curtain itself. However, when I stepped out of the shower, I was standing right in front of the window and the blind was open. There he was, staring. All that happened to him is the C.O. 'talked to him'. No other measures were taken. To make matters worse, I helped out in the mailroom because we were short-handed. I had to personally hand the guy his mail two days later. Here's the best part of the story, that was 30 years ago. Things never change. It's not because woman are in the military. This could've happened in my college dorm. However, the military should be held to a higher standard. I was serving overseas and serving my country, it's even worse the guy was able to walk away with not even a slap on the wrist. Bottom-line: it's not okay and when this happens, appropriate consequences should result.

This should put a big ol dent in the image most military enlisted men try to sell us. Most of them try to convince you that they alone are responsible for every right you enjoy as Americans. They alone protect your freedoms. If it weren't for them you would 'be in a Gulag' Blah, blah. blah. Most military men are there because they were unqualified to get a real paying job. Undereducated, under qualified. And the percentage of deviants and losers is no different than the general public. (Probably greater due to the poorly educated average soldier). But you know what makes it better for them? If you put an American flag or bald eagle (or both!) on your online avatar, the rest of us will see how patriotic you REALLY are.......NOT!

" It is ONLY because of the military that we all enjoy our freedom." I think Dave's point was that it is because of the total might and strategic deployment of our military that we are a strong country, not because of any one soldier. We haven't faced any kind of serious threat of attack or conquest since the Forties; I hardly think we were in much danger from VietNam or Korea. If you live near a military base, you know a lot of enlisted men are dangerous and stupid. We need rough men with lots of back hair to go out and get shot when we go to war, and these men are not always the sanest or safest.

        "Cowardly civilian

        Are all civilians cowards?"

oh great and mighty scientist of rockets:

*the word cowardly modifies the word civilian.
*the word cowardly is there to differentiate cowardly civilians from civilians.
*the presence of the word cowardly indicates that cowardly civilians are a subset of civilians.
*if all civilians are cowardly there would be no reason to include the word cowardly, as that trait would be inherent in the word civilian

you are very obviously an "argue for the sake of argument" civilian, and equally obviously not very good at argument. ( because you are very bad at logic ) which means you should upgrade to "it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt" civilian.

My grandfathers and one grandmother fought in WWII, and their parents in WWI. They were kids of 17-21 years. When I talk to my grandparents about their time in Germany, France, and England they are REALLY clear that they had now clue about the global political issues or had any vision they were fighting for the free world....they were there to kill "Jerries" because all their friends were doing it. Their greatest admiration is for the social warriors like Rosa Parks and Harvey Milk and that guy who blocked the tanks in Tiannamen Square....people who actually stood up for what they believed in. I don't mean to diminish the courage and bravery my elders showed, as kids, fighting in a war they never asked for...but credit where credit's due.

Dave, Are you serious? You can't even get into the military if your ASVAB scores are not high enough or if you do not have a H.S. diploma. So obviously you are not well educated. You don't have to be a historian to know that many of our nation's greatest leaders have had military backgrounds starting from our first POTUS. CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurs of many businesses have served in the military or was raised by a someone in the military. This Memorial day you need to apologize to all those family members who lost a loved one in the many battles this nation has been in and thank a Veteran for sacrificing a part of their lives for this great nation.

Sure, but you know there are plenty of low types smart enough to slither in anyway. The clubs near bases have to use plastic steins and pitchers and plexiglass windows because of all the fights. MPs are busy hauling them off drunk all night. This is just part of military life; hard men who drink too much and get macho ideas. When you concentrate them in one place, stuff happens.

Dave, I'll conceded to you to a point about the education, because I was one of the ones who volunteered after a year of college and stayed as enlisted for 21 years. However; they gave us an opportunityto improve and get an education, lots of training in leadership and how to cope with fluid situations that maybe at at some part at the risk of our own lives. So I'm not going to give you the satisfaction of knowing I laid myself on the line for you because I didn't. I did it for me and thank this country every day for allowing me to serve it and even be greatful to protecting the speech of an unappreciative fool like you.

No, this is the military. Orders will be given and the pictures will be deleted. Once you sign up, they own you, and if you do a criminal act while you are in the service, they try you and jail you on that basis. Military prisoners have fewer rights than civilians. Having those pictures or sending them would not be worth five years at hard labor.

You are right, everything isn't a "isn't a damn Liberal conspiracy theory". In fact, I will even agree that these three aren't. They are 1) an attempt to intimidate using the IRS; 2) trampling of the 1st Amendment by manipulating how the press does its business through the use of the Department of Justice; 3) covering up a poor political decision by lying to the American people. This had nothing to do with liberals and everything to do with King Barrack, who stole a page out of Nixon's playbook. When you get to 10th grade civics next year you will study the early 70's and be amazed by the similarities.

You need to get real! If you need to overlook all the Bush administration dishonesty, ineptness and flaws then you should just go and put your head in a hole for the next 3 1/2 years. Where is your outrage about this story? You know the story, i guess you may have read, and then decided to ignore this unacceptable situation and go off on a "oh, Obama is such a bad man" tirate. Get outraged about the treatment of our female military personnel by fellow members of the military! And for God sake stop going on about Obama. It is people like you who vote for ultraconservative reps. and senators that has the congress unable to work, thus we all suffer. Where is the outrage that republican members of the house just tried to overturn Obamacare for the 37th time. Think of all the progressive, helpful things that they could have addressed to help all Americans. What a waste!

Obamacare is largely unpopular in the United States. Our elected officials, both Democrat and Republican, should take that in account and do what their bosses, the people, are telling them to. As far as blaming the current gridlock, the left side of the fence seems to forget that for the first two years in office, they had control of the Senate, the House, the White House, and had a left leaning swing Supreme Court, yet still could not pass a budget, could not make progress on reducing the debt, couldn't close Gitmo, etc., ad infinitum. Gridlock ensued long before the right took a majority in the House.

I agree but still marvel at the high standards we expect of ourselves as Soldiers yet the low standards we tolerate from our political leaders. The General at Fort Jackson is being charged with adultry – not a crime in the civilian world and not enough to prevent re-election of politicians. This SFC is likely to do hard time and his military and furture civilian career is trashed. The same goes for leaking classified information – we'll get Leavenworth Prison for the act and politicians and journalists get to feel indignant and "outraged" when their caught. Strange...

I shouldn't even reply to this stupidity but a new study was just released a few weeks ago. There are actual MORE men raped in the military than women. Based on anonymity it was something like 12,000 women vs. 14,000 men. Again men simple don't report due to a variety of reasons.

And since your argument's first premise is false, that nullifies anything else you could possibly contribute. Soldiers ARE NOT "taught from the get go" that killing is glorious. Get your head out of your forth point of contact, and learn something before you spout off.
As someone once said in a movie "Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post"

If you have a deterent this will go away; but as long as the Army keeps covering it up it will not. Dishonorable discharges, loss of benefits and holding people accountable when they have a position of authority shows how little discipline there is. I was in the Navy 20 years and can tell you this behavior would have never been tolerated. Even a 4 star in todays Army showed little judgement. They don't even comment until the media finds out about it.

Actually, the Navy has just as many issues...check the report brain child. And if you are comparing apples to apples, the other service academies have the same type of issues. When will people stop trying to assume that only one service has this issue...they all do...just as the greater society at large.

WACs? It's 2013, not 1943. Women play a vital role in today's military. This guy violates a woman's privacy, and THEY are causing this? I bet you think girls in short skirts are just asking to get assaulted too, huh? Quite frankly, your morals and sense are obviously stuck in the 1940s.

Also, you would be shocked at how much this happens in the civilian world. A janitor or someone puts a camera in a woman's locker room or college dorm shower. When they get caught, they usually get a fine and likely fired. Since this guy is serving in the Army, he should expect, at the very least, a bad conduct discharge, as he deserves.

These crimes need to be taken out of military justice/jurisdiction and prosecuted in civilian courts and anyone else at the Academy who knew about it and did not report it needs to be tried as well. If they are found guilty – their military careers, pensions, benefits, should be terminated immediately.

Actually, the UCMJ (the military's law) is very draconian. If this was prosecuted on the civilian side, you would likely see much more lenient punishment than the military will dish out. Also, dishonorable or bad conduct discharges can ONLY be issued by court martial. Civilian courts can't order them.

There is also the added issue that federal civilian courts probably don't have a law to prosecute (federal law doesn't deal with peeping toms and civilian courts can't prosecute UCMJ charges. The State of NY might be able to claim jurisdiction, but just about any good defense attorney could get such civilian charges thrown out.

Looks poorly on the image and the reputation...the faster and swifter they can cut out the cancer the better, but their hands are tied by regulations and legal procedure. The interaction between males and females in the services is more visible now because in yster years, the men were being stupid and misogenistic (sp) with women off base, either single or ladies of the night (and sometimes other men's spouses) now due to close proximity they are being eqaully stupid and forcing themselves on their compatriots. Back in the 70s when much of the integration of females into the armed forces gain hold (they started at West Point in 1976) it was the "they will cause moral to suffer" well, it has routinely been the failure of the men in uniform to act respectfully to them rather anything the women have done.
