Marines on alert if U.S. personnel evacuate Libya

By CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr

Several dozen combat-ready U.S. Marines stationed in southern Spain have been put on alert to potentially move into Libya and assist in the evacuation of American personnel if the unrest grows there in the coming days, a senior military official confirms to CNN.

The Marines have not yet moved from their base, but could be ordered to move closer to Libya so they could get there faster if a full evacuation is ordered.

A team of special operations forces also are on standby in Germany to assist, if needed.

The Marines in Spain are supposed to be ready to move within six hours of notification. By moving them closer, that time frame could be cut in half.

The Marines were sent to Spain in recent weeks as part of a new permanent contingency force capable of moving into North Africa very quickly after the deadly attack in Benghazi last year showed military forces were not close enough to assist.

The force in Spain totals about 500 Marines with six V-22 aircraft they can use to move quickly.

The United States has already withdrawn some embassy personnel, but with militants blocking some portions of the city, the military option would be used if personnel cannot get to the commercial airport, the official said.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

Coups Arranged or Backed by the USA
Since 1945, the USA has been responsible either directly or indirectly of helping remove dozens of governments, many democratically elected, around the world. Sometimes the events are kept secret for years and only slowly come out. Other times, the events are the cause of demonstrations, anger and resentment at the time they occur.
Whenever, an event like this occurs there are two reasons to be considered.

Reason 1: The reason given by the USA, its media and its friends around the world. Reasons like Communism, Terrorism, Human Rights, Freedom, Liberation, Weapons of Mass Destruction, etc.
Reason 2: The actual reason. This is usually hidden from the general public and has to be looked for in quotes by under-reported officials or subsequent events on the ground. Often, the victims of the change of government know the real reasons better than the populations of the Western countries. Real reasons are many but usually include Business Interests, Access to Resources, Markets, Military Bases, Strategic Value, or Political Support.
In the list below only successful changes of government are listed. Many attempts have failed. Cuba is the best example of this.

Why is the USA resented around the world?
The USA is responsible if it directly attacks or bombs another country. It is responsible if it unilaterally imposes economic sanctions that kill. It is also responsible if it arms, trains and supports regimes that violate human rights.

      Dear Mr. Muslim's s*c*,

Read any history book about empires and you will realise that we Muslims established the world's longest running empire (we ruled the known world for 800 years). Through that empire we brought knowledge, decency and civilisation to Europe (the continent YOUR ancestors migrated from) when they were in the dark ages. America wasn't even ON the map back then.

What has your young fleeting empire brought the world aside from Ignorance, war, hatred and destruction?

Dear Whitehouse...Please for once TELL THE TRUTH about what happened in Benghazi and how the President, the UN Ambassador, Hillary Clinton and the rest of your worthless lying cabinet could not show the American people enough common courtesy to tell us the TRUTH. Tell us how either the Whitehouse, cabinet members or the CIA gave the stand down order and prevented the Special Forces from going in and killing the enemy who had just murdered a US AMBASSADOR.

Tell us the TRUTH about how the government of the United States is arming, training and funding alqeda in Syria, and how the "embassy", wasn't an embassy at all, but a clearing house for militant fighters coming out of Iraq and other parts of the Middle East and how the Ambassador was in fact arming militants fighting against Bashar Al-Asad. You are arming, funding and training the very people you claim are our enemy...or is it that you are friends with them now because they are fighting your proxy war against the Syrians, the same way as Bin Laden was our attack dog that we armed, trained and funded during our 11 year proxy war with the Russians in Afghanistan, before our lap dog Bin Laden did something that put him out of good standing with this government and so we hunted him down and killed him...

Come on, TELL US THE TRUTH. We deserve that.

@ caesarbc: You lack logic and you are completely oblivious to facts. You are lazy and apathetic; why bother searching for the news when it is delivered to you throught CNN or Fox?

Advice: Go to college, write a few point papers on current events in the world, you will fail miserably unless you actively research and cite credible sources.

Recommended: (see videos related to Syria, maybe this slay your ignorance)

Wise Phrase: You can have your own opinions, but you can't have your own facts.

Conclusion: You don't question authority or tradition. I feel we have more to fear from your brand of ignorance then we do from "terrorists".

I give President Obama credit for being appropriately responsive to this volatile situation. I think the administration felt it necessary to reveal the actions we are taking, due to the controversy surrounding the 9/11 events. If not for that, these steps may have been done under wraps. This administration must feel that somebody is looking over their shoulder ready to pounce at any given moment. What a sad state of affairs.

um – this administration is doing all this because they are trying to cover for the whole benghazi f-up the first time. who knows how volatile this really is right now – versus obummer staging this to try to look like he has learned his lesson this time – the guy is such a liar, now one can tell the truth anymore. IF this were a real issue, the Marines would already be there.

@ Anney Oakley: If "appropriately responsive to this volatile situation" = ordering a stand-down on Special Forces teams an hour away in Tripoli, ensuring that Chris Stevens and others were brutally murdered, lying to the public saying that the attack on the consulate was because of unrest related to a controversial YouTube video, covering up movement of weapons to brutal terrorist groups murdering thousands of innocent people in Syria, from Turkey with the consulate being the launch pad in the region, and placing Al-Qaeda linked groups of people to "protect" the consulate, etc. then I guess maybe you are right. I concur I feel that the powers that be have been "appropriately responsive" in this volatile situation. Anney Oakley, you are on crack!

So you think a set of talking points is more important than actually figuring out what actually happened, what went wrong, what could have been altered in possible agency stances prior, etc so improvements can be made.

Guess what it can be both politicized and needed at the same time. Clinton was right the witch hunt over talking points is exactly that it does not matter at this point. What does matter is actually looking at the system and determining what can be improved within the system itself to help improve chances of a better outcome next time. What some said the next day when there is always still issues verifying multiple information chains coming into any agency won't do anything to improve those chances. That is a witch hunt.

Unfortunately, the Repigs want a comeback badly and put the country in real real bad shape again, now that the economy is getting momentum. They make Benghazi their piece of cake or their attack dog. They imagined we let those Americans die in the embassy mercilessly.

The country is about worthless and the Americans remain there. Why not evacuate them now while there is a chance of not having to fire a single bullet and ensure that all the Americans that work there will come home to see their families? No, I guess it will have to be a repeat performance of Benghazi. And how about that 500 Marines in Spain. I guess American lives are not valuable any longer to this administration only the increase in taxes matter to this White House, and their kind.

We already have found large amounts of oil in this county and within a few years we will be the largest oil producer in the world, but you don't see anyone assisting us in becoming oil independent. Our Government should be pressing our in country oil companies to expand refinery building and in the interim, take emergency measures to save gas and oil by American citizens by conserving. It is a threat to United States security NOT to be oil independent. In 2007 I bought a Toyota Prius to save fuel because at that time it was considered if you wasted fuel you were helping the terroists. No I'm called un-American because I have a Toyota and am saving fuel. You can't please everyone.

Republicans reaching so hard to find something wrong it makes them look bad. Where were they when we had all of those attacks under Bush? Oh yeah they didn't care because it hurt their political side, never mind the Americans we lost, that is not important to them. I want to see some of them step up and admit the fact that they voted for the funding cuts that helped cause this. None will.

Oh yeah and during the latest hearings we found out those made up accusations were false...

As with all political scandals, it's not the original transgression that gets them in trouble, it's the coverup. After all, Watergate was about a petty burglary. Nobody is arguing that it's Obama/Clinton's fault that the 4 Americans died in Benghazi, that's the terrorists fault. The problem is that the administration willfully lied with the intent to mislead the American public, they manipulated and twisted intelligence reports to fit their political agenda, and they continue to mislead and obstruct. If Obama/Clinton have nothing to hide ... then release their e-mails.

Remember how liberals used to be indignant when they accused Bush of doing this? Will now your Messiahs Obama and Clinton have been caught red-handed.

      • GaryB

Yeah, Obama's mistake was that he didn't use the Benghazi attack as an excuse to invade a completely different country. That approach worked pretty well for Bush. Seriously though, I would've liked to have seen the Republicans offer an equal amount of enthusiasm into an investigation of the intelligence breakdown that caused the first 9/11. You know, the one that killed nearly 3000 US civilians going about their daily lives. I'm not minimizing the loss of the four government employees in Benghazi, but at least they knew that they were working in a very risky environment (and it was the Ambassadors choice to leave the relative security of the embassy to venture out to a much less secure mission)..

It's a lot faster than needing to land at an airport, secure the airport, move to the site on foot, secure the civilians, get them back to the airport, and then take off. And it's faster than a helicopter.

Yes professor. Remember when we had troops in Somalia and "Blackhawk Down" took place? It was the republican controlled congress that cut funding so Clinton had to pull out the troops.

Do you remember the Republican mantra when Clinton fired a cruise missle that barely missed Bin Laden? It went something like this: " No more missles for Monica".

Funny how instances like that slip the republican mind...

Clinton did not cut troops, he removed armor and air assets. There were plenty of troops. When the Marines went in initially, under Bush Sr., they went in with their air and armor and actually conducted an amphibious landing. I think that it was a CNN camera crew that gave away a "position' by shining their camera light on a Marine.

The Clinton administration made the decision that it was just going to be a Humanitarian mission, and did not allow the Army (they replaced the Marines) to bring their armor or Apaches. The Army had to "make do" with what they had on hand.

They were close enough to Benghazi, they just didn't get called upon for some reason. A team in Tripoli that was there at the time, that's far closer than this Spanish-based contingent.

Oh, so now the US Govt wants to be proactive and mobilize troops. Why didnt they do this during the Bhengazi attacks? Oh thats right, it was during the election cycle. They couldnt afford to save American lives because the egg on their faces and political asperations would have been cooked. Fact! Liberals in power make America Less Safe! If Bush were in office Bhengazi wouldnt have happened the way it did.

Bush never helps your argument. But since you're making the case for liberals being weak on security...who was president on 9/11/01, and who was president on 5/2/11? Hint: not the same one.

LOL you are twisted. Benghazi was an oversight. No one saw the attack coming. Do you really think the Government (liberal or conservative) would want U.S. personnel dead??? come on man. get reality check here. This is almost as saying Bush sent the troops to Iraq to die (this what happens to U.S. Troops under the conservative rule). don't be a crazy man please..

You have it backwards. That's the excuse Hillary used when she cancelled the rapid response team from rescuing Ambassador Stevens and his party.
